Multiple Births
Round 1 Poll 13

Read Ghost Eyes
Read Hooky
Submitted context (possible spoilers) and propaganda below the cut
Ghost Eyes octuplets : C'mon now. They were raised in a church in the woods. They used to do wolf roleplay. Their parents are murderers. Their family is haunted by mysterious beings. The only other teens they know are each other. THERE ARE 8 OF THEM!!!
Dani and Dorian : honestly one of most accurate sibling depictions of all time: funny, heartwarming, tragically bittersweet all at once. their dynamic and how they are always there for each other even when they have (very realistic) fights reminds me of my own siblings. wytte twins forever!!

Little did you guys know*, the previous versions of phineas, wytt, cypress, & rowan interacted in some fucking hilarious ways.
I mean with my current versions of the characters, it's really a lot of family drama.
In the previous version phineas & wytt are a set of twins (younger) while rowan & cypress are a set of twins (older). They're a bit related (phin & wytt are cypress' great grandchildren) but don't have a family dynamic.
Wytt & Rowan were friends, not good ones, but they'd talk on occasion. Meanwhile phineas & cypress just hated each other. I think eventually they got on talking terms but they still don't like each other.
#*if you're a long time follower of my other blog I may have mentioned some of this*#but yeah very funny to have drawings of rowan & wytt just... getting a coffee together#that and cypress endlessly antagonizing phineas#cypress is such a little shit in that version. rowan is just genuinely an asshole though#v3's rowan is a senator who changes his opinions depending on who pays him the most#and he's also just a jealous asshole who doesn't love his wife as much as his ex girlfriend who refused to marry him#(he will do things just to make her life miserable)#art's lore#art's rambles#.rowan.#.cypress.#.wytt.#.phineas.

Perpetua Naming Significance
One of the general rules for Perpetua is that names have power, and that every character's name has to be meaningful to some extent.
And this one got really long so it's going under the cut
Damien Vexx - In universe, his name was chosen out of a list of first names and surnames picked out by the Wither King. 'Damien' was included because it sounds like 'demon', though it is etymologically unrelated. 'Vexx' as a surname comes from the word 'vex' (to annoy), just with an extra 'x' because it looks cooler.
On a meta level, this is supposed to be reflective of how he's largely ineffectual as a villain. There's also a few other Damien/Damians in media who are either meant to be evil (Thorn (The Omen)), antiheroes (Wytte (Hooky) or bratty kids to some extent (Wayne (DC), Desmond (Spy x Family)). I learned of many of them after having named Damien Vexx, but it solidifies my decision.
(Captain) Ignacio Javier Luna - I wanted his name to be Filipino-Spanish-sounding, so I picked names from my personal life. 'Ignacio' was one of the names my parents were considering when naming my younger brother (and he's a bit salty that they didn't do it, because he thinks it's a cool name. And it is). 'Javier' was originally going to be 'Xavier' because 'haha Xisuma connections', but I changed it so it'd flow better. The name 'Javier' was also the second name of a 'golden boy' classmate of mine, so to me at least, there's an association with success.
In terms of meaning, the religious associations arose naturally (Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis Xavier), as did the association with fire (to complement Damien's lightning) and celestial bodies. His name helped inform his entire vibe.
The 'Luna' surname was taken from the Filipino revolutionaries Antonio and Juan Luna. In a Filipino cultural context, the shared surname is mostly to signal that yeah, Captain Luna is important. Pay attention to him.
The in-universe lore is that one of Captain Luna's ancestors blew up the enemy moon ship during a war against an evil space empire, and people started calling him 'Luna' as a reference to that.
Edward Marlowe (The Wither King)- If Captain Luna is meant to be Filipino, the Wither King had to be white (no specific heritage in mind). Both names are English in origin, 'Edward' meaning 'rich guard' as a reference to how his family was supposed to guard the Star Crystal that became the Perpetua Key. 'Marlowe' means 'the remains of a lake' according to the baby name sites, which creates an association with decay, while also kinda sounding like it could belong to an old money family.
Helen - We could go into mythological associations, but we won't. I needed a name that sounded fairly mature and 'normal', in comparison to a lot of other characters. MCR provided. Being undead, she changes her name and identity as she sees fit (because she can), so she doesn't really carry a surname anymore. Though if she were to use one for whatever reason, it'd be either Baycock, Ashtoreth, or Harrison, depending on her mood (references to The Omen and Good Omens).
Avery Tan - As a trans guy, he named himself. He took advantage of his surname to make it sound like a pun on 'Everyman' (to poke fun at him being 'ordinary', it's also his superhero name), though etymologically his name has nothing to do with being generic. 'Avery' is derived from names that have to do with magic (elves, fairies). He doesn't have anything to do with the fae, either (not like Alice or Riza). He just liked it, partly because the name was gender neutral and it gives him some degree of plausible deniability if he doesn't want to come out to someone, or as well as being flexible in case he feels different about his gender identity.
The surname 'Tan' was originally picked from people I knew IRL.
Minerva Tan - 'Minerva' - Roman form of the Greek goddess Athena. Her parents named her this in the hopes that she'd be intelligent, and boy howdy, she was.
Alice Hallward - Part of her backstory is that she was the protagonist of a portal fantasy as a child, so the name Alice ('Alice in Wonderland') felt like a natural choice. 'Hallward' is a nod to my current favourite fictional painter, Basil Hallward from 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'.
Riza - She was created to fill in for Alice and live her life while Alice was going on adventures and trying to get back to Fairyland. Being derived directly from Alice, we're playing by 'Shadows House' rules where their names intentionally sound similar. Riza's name was derived like this: Alice -> Alis -> Lisa -> Riza (original -> sound -> name ('too soft') -> name (more fitting to personality)).
Icarus Noctua - Another mythological name, because I can't help myself. He was originally meant to be something of a 'Grian meets Victor Frankenstein' type of character for my DnD character's backstory, though the campaign didn't push through. Frankenstein is sometimes called 'the modern Prometheus', so I chose the name 'Icarus' to reflect his hubris. 'Noctua' means 'owl' in Latin, because sometimes you've gotta double down on the bird/flying associations when creating Grian expies LOL.
Newton - Immediate association with Isaac Newton, though Perpetua's Newton isn't a scientist but an architect instead. Icarus gave this name to him in order bind his demonic consciousness to a robotic body. As per demonic naming traditions, his name was Rotanev, after the star. He eventually embraces both mortal and demonic names.
Phobos Abaddon (The Knight of the Nine Circles)- 'Phobos' after the Martian moon, and meaning 'fear'. 'Abaddon', meaning 'ruin or destruction'. Truly one of the stereotypical demon characters ever.
Not everyone with a celestial name is a demon, but if they're a demon, their name is probably celestial in origin (eg Betelgeuse).
As of now I haven't quite fleshed out his Perpetua counterpart in terms of their relationship, but his name is Gavin (derived from Gawain, the knight from Arthurian Legend, who was sometimes described as 'brave but hot-headed' in the surrounding literature).
Augustin Ambrosio Luna - 'Augustin', having general religious but also Catholic associations (Saint Augustine), as well as in my personal experience, being common among younger brothers. His second name, 'Ambrosio' is the real kicker though because it's derived from 'Ambrosios', meaning 'immortal'.
The irony is that Augustin isn't the immortal Luna sibling, in fact, he's so Not Immortal, the most important thing about him is that he's dead. Not undead like Helen is, but fully dead, in part because Ignacio did his best to erase him from Perpetua's history so the gods couldn't try to tamper with his memory by resurrecting him.

INSTITUTE ARC SPINOFF
-This is not the final name, If I find anyone that fits better, I'll change it.
-Characters involved: mainly Hans Wytte, Hilde Wytte, and Angela Wytte.
-BASICALLY, THIS IS WHERE HANS AND ANGELA MEET, AT THE INSTITUTE.
-They're teenagers (15-17 yo I suppose)
-Angela is a new student who just moved up, for some reason I like to think that she might be an immigrant (we never saw any family of her in the comic, so this makes me think that they are in another kingdom/country anyway(?)
-By the other side, Hans and Angela.
-They came from an elite family, the "Wyttes", so they are recognized in school bc of that.
-OF COURSE THE STUDENT COUNCIL DOES EXIST.
-And these two are part of it :)
-These two are leaders, by birth, but honestly, I see Hilde more as the president, and Hans as the vice president.
-I think that is all I can share for now, I DO HAVE DRAWING WIPS, I'LL POST THEM, I SWEAR

Hooky is a DAMM GOOD webtoon and you should all read it.
Every want to read a long-running epic? Do you like magic and witchcraft in your stories? Is the thought of a colorful cast (literally and figuratively) enough to catch your attention? Do you like stories that are all about love - familial, romantic and platonic? Want all of what was mentioned above to be renditioned in beautifully drawn and flowing tapestries?
If so then Hooky - a webtoon by Miriam Bonastre Tur is just for you.
Its a story deserving of a seat next to the ‘greats’ people quote when talking about storytelling on the level of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the like. This is not being said lightly. The pitfalls of any kind of story that goes on for longer than a few episodes or chapters or storytelling arcs is that they may lose their way. Lose track of what the initial chapters were trying to tell or lose focus and bloat up into messy storytelling. This can happen in any medium and webtoon is certainly not immune.
There are many great stories in webtoon - but many, just like a certain shonen jump manga which continued and stretched until the publisher itself decided to give it the infamous ax - continue their stories until they are unrecognizable. Sometimes, ending the story at just the right time makes a story that much more precious to its readers.
On webtoon, there are certainly quite a few great stories both ongoing and complete that have this ephemeral air of just right. Those kinds of stories that read confidently with the attitude of an individual who has a goal and will and does complete it.
I personally have many series I hold dear to my heart which are themselves webtoons. Today though I’m here to talk about Hooky.

The Story
Hooky, a series so good, that if it were a manga I’d want it turned into an anime and if it were a comic I’d want it turned into a cartoon. And even as a webtoon, I just want someone to bring this to the big screens.
Its a story about many things. At its heart, it's about love and the lack thereof it (as cheesy as this sounds). Divides from distrust, lashings from hatred, misunderstandings from miscommunication all looked at different levels. From the interpersonal to the societal. Miriam weives a careful and interesting narrative on what can quickly become a complicated and controversial topic.
Its a series that starts off quaint and oh so very sweet. Akin to Disney's retelling of all the classic fairy tales.
Two twins, Dani and Dorian dash through a pastel rendition of a Spanish village, dressed in matching black robes as they run late for their school bus. Upon missing their only ticket to the hidden rendition of Hogwarts this world has they have a brilliant idea to hide this from their parents. And instead, find a mentor in magic as an alternative.
From then on its a swirling adventure as these children navigate a world they’ve obviously never interacted with. It's a fairy tale - but not from Disney - that takes some interesting inspiration from the famous stories fables. Hansel and Gretel being an example which comes to mind.
Going back to comparing Hooky with Avatar - it’s a story with its high and low moments for the characters. Just like Aang, the main duo of this story, don’t always get to play around with their equivalent of Elephant koi. It’s at times grim but not overly gritty. It doesn't revel in life’s tragedies any more than it indulges in fantasy’s escapism.
Our main characters find themselves in a world they quickly realize they know very little about and it is quickly made obvious to both us the viewer and the twins, that not everything is exactly as simple as it seems to the inexperienced eyes of the child twins.
In a way, they are almost perfect reflections to us readers. Ignorant and oblivious to the reality of this open and unexplored world. Almost except for the fact that unlike them, we have some grounding story elements of the initial fables interwoven into the narrative.
Taking inspiration from a story does not mean copying it however and this is certainly true of Hooky, which is it's own grounded and fleshed out tale.
The world-building starts off in the form of little one-off lines and details which quickly snowball into a predominant feature of the story. Something that demands the attention of both you and the characters. The story and its contents evolve and mature just like the characters as they grow up both figuratively and literally.
Scenes and events happening as early as chapter one will come back later. Twists, turns, self-fulfilling prophecies - all of which given this series a wonderful re-read value (in addition to the first read-through ride).
There’s so much I could say about Hooky and it’s story and storytelling. However, much of it is walled off behind intricate layers of world-building and scenes - all of which are too spoil-ery for me to justify, well, spoiling it.
Instead, I’ll move forward to another greatly quality of this story: Its characters.
The Characters
This story’s characters are much of its charm. If you can’t find yourself enjoying Dani and Dorian’s antics along with their friends - then much of this story will fall flat.
They should not though, because, every character it a well and finely crafted piece of art.
First, we have the main duo: the aforementioned twins. Both are polar opposites in character, as many twins tend to be written - but both come off as very genuine and their sibling love for each other comes across even more so.
It’s the little things that make them work. The sibling bickering, the disagreements that put them at odds but eventually bring them back together. The fierce care and protectiveness they have despite this and hostility that will sprout against anyone that attacks one or the other. They won’t be finishing each other’s sentences but no one else in the world would understand their unsaid words better than they do with each other.
Dorian, the brother is the ‘book smart’, the skill. He likes to think of himself as a well-read gentleman but isn't all that prideful over it (for the most part). He doesn’t handle the more rambunctious boys his age well despite his admiration of them and needs to socialize.
If there is one thing he’s proud and or defensive over it’s his magic. His wizard heritage and family name - no matter what the outside world’s opinion of it is hell stubbornly hold on to it. A flip side to his genuine and endearing clumsiness when friends are in the picture is the fact that he is perhaps more cynical or anxious than his sister. He’s far from perfect, but again this is due to his youth and inexperience rather than any lingering personality flaw. Throughout the story, he does many things, both good and bad - but everything he does is consistent and grounded as the individual he’s been built up to be.
Dani is the more outgoing of the two twins, she’s more so the ‘raw power’ of the duo. Despite being just as sheltered as her brother, she’s a step ahead of her brother when facing the uncertain, confident, adventurous but rash - despite how this gets her into trouble.
She is, however just as sensitive as her brother. In fact, all the while being more outgoing it can seem like she is more easily pressured by the views of others on her than her bother at times, the more easily influenced by the world around her.
There is also a vast supporting cast of characters in addition to our interesting twin due. Some of which I doubt hesitate to even call just “side” characters with the role they continuously play.
There’s Nico, a rambunctious village boy - who just wants to properly get the chance to grow up as a wizard’s apprentice despite his ‘lack’ of ability with magic. He’s first introduced as one of those ‘rough around the edges’ individuals with a somewhat un-empathetic temperament.
As the story’s scope grows and as our characters mature with their experiences, however, Nico is quickly one of the characters who take the lead in his development. Considering where he started, he ends up one of the most grounded and wise characters.
Our next character is Princess Monica. As per her moniker - she certainly starts off impersonating her title. Stuffy, self-aggrandising, very obtuse regarding the lives of everyday people - the list goes one. Her introduction is set with her decision to embark on a quest to find her prince charming.
Just like our main character duo, she is very sheltered, however. And quickly she’ll discover that her wants and beliefs may clash with reality. This pompous air (which may annoy some readers) thankfully, does not last long. Monica quickly blooms to be one of the most empathetic and hardworking characters within the story. Her blooming relationship with Dorian is as agonisingly anxiety inducing as it is heartwarming to see.
I could talk at length about the other characters, but if I did this post would go on and on. But certainly, Mark, Alex, Damien, Will, Master Pendragon, the King, the Wytte family - all are intriguing and compelling characters which will keep you around if you’re not hooked already.
The Art
The final thing to this post is me just briefly discussing the art. If you haven't noted already from the screenshots - it’s gorgeous and unique. Here the author/artist takes full advantage of the medium provided to her. Scenes will flow down for pages, something only possible in the webtoon. Characters will talk in coloured speech bubbles, something only possible in coloured and static media such as comics.
The art in this series is nothing close to static, however. It's dynamic and inventive in its paneling in a way that brings so much charm to the series.
Emotional moments are that much more impactful as you, the readers, are swept through both dream-like and nightmarish scenes alike. Scenes will flow just as much as they will pause between panels, letting words and emotions soak in. They build up awe as well as they do tension and dread. The artistry of the author develops along with the story is nothing short of beautiful especially as we reach the current ending arc’s climax and denouement.
To Summarise
Hooky is a well-crafted piece of writing that I hope more people learn about and get to read. It's currently going into its final arc (as of writing this post) and I can attest that it certainly is worth the read. While as a story it enjoyed taking after the grim origins of our favourite fairy tales, it never forgets what it once was - a story about two twins just missing their school bus - and it makes sure to show the readers it hasn’t forgotten with a fairy tale ending fit for a child’s bedtime story its so sweet.

For the character thing: damien wytte?
It’s been a while since I’ve done this meme, but I’ll go ahead and do it because I always love the chance to talk about Hooky.
Favorite thing about them:
There’s SO many things to like about him, and he’s such a huge mood all the time, but I think my favorite thing is less about him and more about how he’s got all these complex feelings. He genuinely cares for his family, and also for Will, even though those two things are in conflict with each other because of his family’s fixation with revenge. He feels guilt for something that he really shouldn’t feel guilty for! He was just a kid when the Incident happened, and when he finally “abandoned” his family he was just a young adolescent who was just trying to be happy, while the household he grew up in had become toxic since then.
(And then he feels guilt for leaving his younger siblings there. Damien takes so much onto himself...)
I love him, and I totally do gush so much about my OT3 with Damien/Will/Monica, but canonically there is soooo much more to love about Damien past his feelings for Will.
Least favorite thing about them:
That guilt thing he does for things that are outside his control, or which he shouldn’t really be blamed for. Especially when he was a kid...
Favorite line:
There’s the one where they’re talking about Will’s curse being broken when we gets a true love’s kiss, and Monica is so scared that if she kisses him he won’t wake up, and Damien is genuinely trying to reassure her (the entire scene is so good!!!), and he says something like “I can kiss him if you can’t do it. I know he’ll wake up if I kiss him.” Like ahhhh, he’s literally admitting to Monica that he’s in love with her FIANCE, but they need to save Will and if Monica is too afraid to find out that her feelings may have changed for him, he’ll help her out.
And then there’s the other one where Damien hears that Monica is sleeping with Dorian and his whole “eXCUSE ME??” reaction and automatic protectiveness of his baby brother.... so good.
I didn’t try to actually look up the specific lines though, sorry haha.
brOTP:
Monica and Damien are such a good bro-ship! Solidarity in their love for Will (though sometimes that love may be platonic, it’s still so valid).
OTP:
God is this even a question? Damien/Will(/Monica ot3)
nOTP:
Idk I guess it would be weird if Damien and Monica were shipped romantically?
Random headcanon:
Damien, Will, and Monica have definitely shared a bed a bunch of times. Mostly when they were very young because then it became kinda unacceptable when they were a little older (particularly Will and Monica since they were engaged and not yet married), but they still fell asleep at least once laying out in the sun together. They’re very comfortable with sharing physical space between the three of them.
Unpopular opinion:
Idk I guess that Damien/Will/Monica is such a good ship? I know Monica doesn’t have feelings like that for Will anymore and loves Dorian but... the trio is so good.
Song i associate with them:
I’m Glad You’re Evil Too (I think about this sooo much between Will and Damien tbh, mostly ot3 stuff though, but it’s great)
Favorite picture of them:
I don’t have them but... all the time when Damien and Will are interacting... makes my heart so happy.
