The Patches of the Coven of Elders 🪡🧵
In addition to my personal obsession with all these badass witches, I also wanted fans like me to be able to rep their favorite witches in an aesthetically cool way, and hence the Witchy Merit Badges were born!
Here are some close-ups:

Fun fact: the middle patch is based on the Hay Necronomicon, a Lovecraftian symbol based on the Elder Sign star

Don’t worry. She would only kill you if she genuinely thought it was the right thing to do…

You are a witch who personifies the very idea of coldness and solitude. Your sister, who personified harmony and community and you secretly hated bc she talked too much, passes away and her successor is a young naive witch who somehow talks even more. Being a master of manipulation, you conspire with your other sisters to get rid of her. Said sisters are 1) an old lady who somehow insults everyone to their faces in a way that you can’t retaliate against and postpones the murder plot because she’s eepy, 2) a goth so committed to being a bitch twenty four seven that it affects her ability to effectively carry out said murder, and 3) a titty AND crotch-out hippie who is down for the murder but also sees it as her magical right to eat anyone who walks faster than a light jog. Every day Indri Witch of the Wind and Stars wakes up

Because the question didn’t end up being finished, I want to do my best to explain the rest of the Coven of Elders’s familiars. We all know about Ame’s fox being mischief and selfishness (or impulsivity, depending on how you want to word it) that can interferes with forming and maintaining community. I totally agree with Indri’s polar bear being the predatory viciousness she doesn’t present in polite company.
Mirara’s crow? Crows are known for being sociable, loud, and aggressive. They also have tight knit families and mourn the dead. They’re a lot. That’s not necessarily something a witch of entropy and nothingness would want to internalize.
Gramore’s hawk? Hawks are loyal, quick to anger, and hold grudges. While very forward and intimidating, Gramore doesn’t strike me as necessarily having too short a temper. I would think that strong emotions could infere with the effectiveness of a hunt. The Witch of the Wild Hunt would also have to interact with a lot of predators, and the politics of that could make always holding grudges inconvenient.
Hakea’s boa constrictor? Boas are often docile, slow-moving, curious, and apparently easy to tame. For a witch who is responsible for tending to Orima’s domain, who has to answer to many of the literal forces of nature, I would imagine a certain backbone is required that means that while curiosity and a certain gentleness might sometimes be called for, it would only be in select circumstances.
Anyone who knows more about the temperament of these animals, feel free to chime in with your thoughts? I kept with scientific animal behavior rather than allegorical associations, because these NPCs were created by Brennan “Animals Facts Guy” Lee Mulligan, but one could point out that Hakea having a snake familiar means she’s secretly cunning. Only time will tell if any of this is true, as I don’t have great read on Hakea other than, as @quiddie called her in the Fireside Chat, “Sleepy Time Grandma” lol. We don’t really know many of the witches’ real personality other than Indri, who I think we know pretty well now, despite her having possibly the thickest mask (lol and she’s not the one who wears a literal mask).

Why don’t you trust Neef? She’s the sweetest!
(edited to correct spelling)
I don’t trust Indri to just be okay with her former apprentice leaving. She kills apprentices who disappoint her but just lets this one run off??
Until proven otherwise, I fully believe Níf is a spy for Indri

Hey @Indri, I’m stealing your fucking apprentice. Niamh is my apprentice now. I’m going to teach her how to crochet and how to balance self-reliance with community action. She’s going to be the Witch of the Whatever the Fuck She Wants. We’re making muffins.

Progress is being made on this! Tbh not happy with this shot, but I gotta just buck up and move on.
I don't think I've mentioned it here, but I'm doing the big, scary career thing where I move to LA this month(it's either the worst or best time to do it, we'll roll the dice I guess). So expect updates on this to continue to be slow for a bit as I wrap up my work in Texas and prep for my move.
I was hoping to get the animation done before the new WWWO arc happened, but 'twas a fool's errand.

A WIP of a Worlds Beyond Number fanart I started this morning. There were so many new characters last episode, but I can't help but design a witch first! I went very art deco for Mirara, so for Indri I wanted to lean into mirroring her home instead, creating a symmetry in her outfit until her crown which will mimic the aurora.

I'm writing this right after posting Indri art because she's still on my brain but there's something about the gifts and the castle having aisles for everyone in the coven.
The witch of the wind and stars, whose domain is over the self, joins the coven and builds her castle at the most singular point in the world, the North Pole, the top of the world, because thematically it works, right? And so she isolates herself there, at the top of the world. Making herself better. Alone. In this gigantic castle where she lives on her own with her familiar and, after a while, an apprentice.
And all her sisters gift her something to allow her to leave her sanctum, to travel, return to it easily. She can create a magic doorway and put her sanctum on a ship and have travelling plants and go through any fireplace and give wings to her castle etc etc. Has she used them, a long time ago, before putting them all under glass cases? Did she visit her sisters and the world before she locked the gifts away with their wand of covenant? If the gem fell out of the horn, it might mean it was used, right?
Because, the thing is, she lives alone in her great big ice queen castle, but she has built it with a wing for each of her sisters. They all have their quarters there, made for them, they had leave to make them home when they visited, to have furniture and goods and trinkets. Is it only so that she would have more control over the conclaves if they happened in her castle that she built it with places for each of them? Is it as a sign of respect for the other stations? Or was there, at some point, a part of her that wanted them to visit? A part that she locked away or snuffed out in her search for individual power, as she began to plot. A part that put the gifts away in their glass displays (and never got rid of the gifts that were from sisters she killed). Because, yes, they're immensely powerful artifacts and it would be dumb to throw them away or destroy them - but also, they're proof of what the coven used to be. Of the witches that were there when Indri joined, that accepted her as one of them.
Did she ever feel that they could make each other better, that togetherness improves the self, before she turned cold for good? Before counting only on herself and asserting her own power. When that feeling disappeared, what was happening between her and Wren?
Indri, if it becomes a coven of one, how is it still a coven?
