I've debated multiple times doing something like cataloging racist microaggressions I see in the danmei tags and making a post about it. I generally see at least one a day, and I block the worst offenders. But in the end I'm a white USAdian and it's really not my place. I'm sure I don't even catch them all.

It's a real issue and I've seen a lot of anecdotal evidence that it drives Chinese and Chinese diaspora fans out of participating in Westernized Tumblr danmei fandom, and that's utterly unacceptable.

One of the most common ones I see is how people talk about the character names. For example:

THIS IS A MICROAGGRESSION. For fuck's sake, people, acting like the names are ridiculous, incomprehensible, outside of what "friends and colleagues" could comprehend, is RACIST AS FUCK. And I see people say stuff like this constantly.

"But I only meant I was struggling--" THEN WHY DID YOU ASSUME OTHER PEOPLE WOULD STRUGGLE THE SAME WAY? STILL RACIST

"But I could say that about the abbreviations in any--" BUT YOU SAID IT ABOUT THIS FANDOM SPECIFICALLY AND CONTEXT FUCKING MATTERS AND IN THIS CONTEXT IT'S RACIST.

"But it was on my personal blo--" LOOK IF YOU WANT TO BE RACIST ON YOUR PERSONAL BLOG I CAN'T STOP YOU BUT IF YOU TAG ORIGINAL POSTS INTO MAIN FANDOM TAGS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WILL SEE YOU AND KNOW YOU ARE RACIST.

The person who posted the above, when I said it was a microaggression, demanded to know how. So, for them and everyone else in this fucking fandoms, I present what any of them could have learned by googling the term. The definition of microaggression:

What that screen cap says about names is literally the textbook definition of a microaggression.

Chinese names are just names. The way Chinese sounds is just the way a language sounds. Cultivation is inherently based in Eastern culture and cannot be completely divorced from that context even for a cute AU. I'm so tired of seeing posts saying things like "MXTX just stole the plot of (insert Western myth/folktale/fable here)". Do yall realize how fucking racist you're being? Do yall realize how fucking racist even I've probably been by accident because I'm also a dumb white USAdian?

I've been holding this post in for like a year, but the person who posted that screen cap, who doubled-down by posting a non-apology to all the MXTX main tags, and who acted like I'd said something insane when I told them it was a microaggression...they're apparently my last fucking straw.

DO BETTER, WHITE WESTERN DANMEI FANDOM. We all need to learn and listen and knock it the fuck off already. Me included.

Please, please listen when people say "check yourself." Seeing this stuff everyday is exhausting even for ME and I'm not even in the marginalized group. Chinese people (including diaspora) who stay in the fandom here despite the constant deluge are strong as fuck and they do not deserve this and, as a white person, I'm so so sorry white people are like this.

🔱There was no way you were gonna confess that you had a crush on Prester. NO WAY.

🔱...Until one day while playing Truth or Dare with your friend they dared you to confess to your crush and let them watch {they didn't even know who it was}. So you had to explain that you had a crush on none other than the Witchhunter... and you still had to do it. With your friend watching.

🔱So you confessed to Prester and he basically told you to get off his tower unless you wanted to be turned into roast [species] for his dinner table. You ran away pretty quickly.

🔱Little did you know Prester actually had a crush on you too, he just wouldn't dare ever show it. Ever.

🔱One day while fighting him, sound and zap miss a few too many times and all the Cogs end up with a hive mind... and with their linked consciousness, one of them spills Prester's secret. He gets so mad that the Cogs start turning on themselves and you toons kinda watch in confusion as the chaos unfolds.

🔱After all the Cogs are done destroying themselves, all that's left is Prester at 0 HP. The rest of your group takes the W and leaves, but you stick around to tease confront him about your newfound knowledge.

🔱After a lot of arguing about it, he finally reluctantly admits that he has a crush on you. You ask him out on a date expecting him to say no, but to your surprise he says yes... under the condition you tell NOBODY, not even your best friends. You agree and arrange the details for the date.

🔱You tell your closest friend about it anyways but tell them to keep it a secret, and it stays between just the two of you.

🔱The first date goes... fine? And the next dates go fine as well, and so on...

🔱If you don't know big words, expect to need a dictionary at all times while talking to him.

🔱PDA? Who's she? Prester finds it embarrassing enough that he could be seen with a toon, let alone hugging them or holding their hand. You still do it to fluster him and he {surprisingly} doesn't resist, but it's clearly very embarrassing for him.

🔱He's basically swallowing all of his pride to be dating a toon in the first place.

🔱Behind closed doors, the most he will really ever initiate is holding your hand because he still can't get over how embarrassing it is to date a toon. He's ashamed of his feelings.

🔱You start helping him work through his feelings of guilt and shame, and slowly over time he opens up more and more to you. Under all that pride and those big words, he really does love you and wants to show it.

🔱Eventually, he even manages to say, "I love you," to you.

🔱His coworkers notice that he doesn't seem as... rebellious towards the rules? to get rid of toons. While the CLO is happy he's not getting disciplinary charges every 5 seconds anymore and doesn't care to investigate further, some other Cogs take it upon themselves to find out why. AKA, they ask Bellringer to find out. And when he finds out Prester is dating a toon, he tells EVERYBODY.

🔱To your surprise, instead of denying everything and trying to say Ben's just starting rumors, he actually admits the rumors are true.

🔱After that drama cools off, Prester ends up kind of mellowing out a little bit. He's still definitely on the aggressive and prideful side, but it's way more manageable.

🔱He even gets the courage to hold your hand around Ye Olde Toontowne... awww.

🔱If you kiss him, angle his hat downward so that your toony ears kinda bend a little bit {or more if they're already pretty long}. He likes it.

🔱His way of complimenting you is calling you a bunch of big words he knows you won't understand, but look them all up later and he's actually saying nice stuff about you.

🔱Your relationship will start off with him acting pretty cold and distant, but after a while he warms up to you and you have a very... well... interesting relationship.
