Blood of Zeus—My review and thoughts
So I finished this series some days ago. I gave my thoughts on the characters already and a brief small overview of things, but here’s a more in depth review of the story and plot. I say in depth but there’s really not much to the story
Summary:
Blood of Zeus is about Hera waking up ancient giants in order to kill Zeus because he cheated on her.
General Overview
Although I pretty much simplified the plot, there was a decent set up to the show that was never paid off in a satisfying way. The story felt really rushed and a lot of characters and concepts ended up being pointless in the grand scheme of things because they’re never fleshed out or explored at all in the series besides being introduced. The basic plot his that Hera is angry and wants to kill Zeus, but everything else never factored into this plot. For example, demons are introduced, but the concept of demons is never explored beyond how they’re created. There’s no reason why they needed to exist, they just do.
The Good:
The set up to this series was really good in my opinion. the Gods not being able to interfere with the things going on on earth. Demons being introduced and created by the flesh of the giants. Seraphim's entire character and backstory. Hera setting up a civil war conflict on mount Olympus because of Zeus’s trifling and him trying to interfere when Seraphim kills Electra. Heron being ordinary despite being the son of a god. Seraphim and Heron being brothers.
There was some really good Set up in this series, that could have been the perfect set up for a season 2. All the pieces were there and these pieces kept me interested in the story.
The Bad:
Almost all the set up was thrown away. As I said above, the demons were never explored beyond being the result of eating the giants flesh. The gods not being able to interfere was only important to Electra’s death and nothing else. The civil war conflict Hera set up meant nothing because her plan was to bring the giants in anyway to kill Zeus. Heron being ordinary was thrown away because he has god powers now. Seraphim's entire story was never explored because he became Hera’s pawn in the end, I don’t know why he was creating demons, or what the purpose of creating said demons even was. what was the point of making Seraphim and Heron brothers when it wasn’t going to be explored at all in any way.
None of the things they introduced mattered to the story, because it had nothing to do with Hera wanting to bring the giants back to kill Zeus. and that’s the tragedy of this series. it failed to explore anything at all, instead of letting it be a simple set up to a much larger story. This season was only 8 episodes. in 8 episodes we could have gotten the perfect set up to season 2.
The Alternative:
The plot should have been Seraphim is creating a demon army to liberate Greece(or something like that), and Heron has to stop that from happening. This could have lasted for 2, maybe 3 seasons and season 1 could have been the set up to it all.
1. Set up the demons and their abilities. sometimes regular weapons can hurt them, but sometimes they can’t. which is it.
2. Hera can manipulate Seraphim but have it be discreetly like she did when she guided Cerberus to the hut Electra was hiding in. That’s fine and that is in character for Hera. it’s the same with the sword. using that to spite Zeus is fine, but have her secretly guide Seraphim to the sword instead of having her go to him directly about it. don’t let Hera be the driving force of what's happening on earth, but have her manipulate it so that she’s pitting Heron and Seraphim against one another, in hopes that Seraphim will kill Heron
3. Have the civil war set up matter. Have Hera want to usurp Zeus in some type of way. or even have Hera want to watch Zeus suffer as his child dies. this way Hera’s schemes actually make sense and shows her being smart about how she’s goes about hurting Zeus while also making this aspect that the gods cant’ interfere in the affairs of earth matter.
4. Give us Seraphim's goals. they said he wants to kill his uncle and all his sons and relatives, so why didn’t they focus on that. why is Seraphim so focused on Alexia? was she stopping his plans? is she part of that royal guard and is tasked with hunting them down? why is he creating demons? what are his plans with creating said demons? explore more of Seraphim and his goals.
5.Seraphim’s reveal plot twist could have been done in season 2 and should have been done in a dramatic fashion where Heron is the one who finds out. these two had no type of dynamic in the series, and honestly we didn’t need to know this information at all because it was the least important thing in the series. we set Seraphim and Heron against one another, and then reveal their family dynamic in a dramatic fashion. say, Heron has his mothers necklace, and the necklace responds to Seraphim and Heron puts it together and calls him brother.
