rather than sonia's research assistant, i think it would b way more fitting for hop to become a pkmn ranger.. he literally says that he wants to help pkmn that r in trouble, no matter where they r, like that's a pretty perfect direction for him to go in isn't it ?! (we've also already seen a rival become the professor's assisstant w bianca, so i feel like it would be more interesting in that sense too)
