the first scene that comes to mind is the gym scene in season 1 where wille confronts august about the video. that was pure, raw emotion right there on his face. there was absolute despair written in his eyes and body movements and tone of voice. it was as if edvin himself was actually feeling what wilhelm was in that moment because i believed it so hard. his eyes alone told me everything i needed to know. he wasn’t just sad or upset with august, he was feeling guttural pain and anguish over this betrayal. that even though he and august were never close, he still never could have imagined he would betray him like this. that scene is so painful for me, personally, because of the way edvin portrays emotional states such as sadness and anger and anxiety/panic. the man truly knows how to make you believe he’s living through some of the shittiest things a person can go through 😭

STARTING OUT WITH A GUT PUNCH! Oof.

Props to Davis, his acting skills are really good! 👍 I can really hear the horror and sadness in Sun's voice as he realizes that Dazzle is one of the July 16th victims. He just sounded so broken. Everyone handled this extremely well, Dazz,Sun, and Jack, all handled this very well. Sun's probably gonna need a few days to recover, but it's good he knows... I think.

I'm also pleasantly surprised by Jack. I thought he was gonna overhear that Sun hurt Dazz and then fly into a rage and try and attack Sun, but he showed great restraint, and I'm proud of him for that. But all I can say is WOW, THIS EPISODE IS A GUT PUNCH! Sad/10 😢 😭

AND ANOTHER GUT PUNCH! 😭😢 Sun remembers EVERY. SINGLE. ONE of the July 16th victims' names and every single detail about them, like how one loved superheroes and dressed like a Superman/Spider-man fusion, two of them were twins one loved mustard, the other hated it, and one wore seven rings pops always, I don't think I could remember little details like that but he does! Wow. He feels so bad for what he did to the kids. Even though it wasn't his fault, he felt like he should have gotten punished for he did, but he didn't. He got away with it and feels like he shouldn't have. Is that like some form of survivors guilt? Moon definitely earned some brother points here, caring for Sun, talking with him, not getting mad about the July 16th stuff. He's definitely changed since the series first started. Good on you, Moon. Also, the best jokes in this episode came from him.

Merida is rebellious, headstrong, and airheaded, fighting her loved ones on everything and doing what she wants regardless of the consequences until said consequences come back to bite her in the butt. Portia on the other hand, while also headstrong, is spunky, kind, and takes others feelings and opinions into account instead of doing the first daring thing that comes into her head

Which brings me to Rapunzel. Admittedly, Rapunzel is a lot more sheltered and inexperienced about the world than Portia was but they are still kindred spirits. Curious, spunky, headstrong, kind, compassionate, and unafraid to fight for themselves.

They're ready to take on the world even if they don't know enough about it

Both also have evil and manipulative family members (ik Mother Gothel isn't Rapunzel's family; she was still the one who raised Rapunzel & Rapunzel considered her family long enough for it to count in this situation)

Both also meet love interests who guide them through the part of the world that's unknown to them, be it magic for Portia or the world as a whole for Rapunzel

Lucio - Merida

remember all those traits I listed for Merida? Yeah Lucio fits those

Merida and Lucio may be hella good warriors, but boy are they stupid sometimes

Hold On To “What If”: Overanalyzing and Rewriting Sonic Prime

aka Masterpost & References: Part One

Hmm. What do you think I should do, Shadow?

Shadow: "Determine your own destiny, just as I have."

Well, you heard the hedgehog. What better way to celebrate the Year of Shadow than by talking about the show where he had the best characterization: Sonic Prime. I may have my own bias towards the show due to a personal connection, but overall I think the show is pretty good. Animation, voice-acting, music/sound, editing, they were amazing. The writing, aside from Shadow’s character, is ok. There are definitely some good lines but there were “eh” moments as well. (We’ll get back to that.)

I thought I would give an insight into what I thought about Sonic Prime, from overanalyzing every single frame to rewriting Season 3, and finally explain whatever the hell I had on my bingo card (the one I made before Season 3 was released).

Before we get into it…

As the internet is, I want to clarify some things:

1. I’m not a die-hard Sonic fan so some things may not be 100% accurate. I honestly entered into the fandom when Sonic Frontiers was announced. My first exposure to Sonic at all was the Sonic Unleashed Animated short film, “Night of the Werehog”, when I was like 14 so I caught myself up with Sonic lore in between releases of each season of Prime. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about anything.

2. There's this whole debacle on whether or not Prime is part of the canon. News has recently been brought up that the Prime Team didn't acknowledge the comments made by Ian and the lore team about inconsistencies. It didn't surprise me at all. The show wasn't going to be part of the canon to begin with, which was abundantly clear by the show's writing. It feels like the writers copied from a wiki. There were so many scenes where instead of taking the moment to breathe and have character development, they put fighting scenes, more so in season three.

💬 "What about the references, Shadow's characterization, etc?"

Actually, we wouldn't have them if not for some of the crew fighting SO hard to get that into the show. The animators, storyboard artists, voice actors, editors, and many others — some are legit Sonic fans and others wanted to please the fandom. They have done such a great service to the fans with what they could, so could we just give a round of applause to the creative crew behind this? 👏👏👏 To the crew, you did what you could for us, and we can’t thank you enough.

Back to the whole "canon" thing, for this essay, we'll treat Prime as a stand-alone thing unless we absolutely have to affiliate it with canon.

3. Netflix did the weird thing of splitting up all the episodes of the series and called them “seasons”. I personally call them “batches” and I know there are some people who do the same, but for our sakes, they’ll be referred to as seasons, just so we don’t get confused. Okay? Cool!

Finally, this is for funsies, don’t take this too seriously. I want to establish that I have nothing against the people behind Prime or anyone else.

My thoughts on Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle

⚠️ Warning: Spoilers for the film (and portions of the manga) ahead!

Two days ago, I went to see Haikyuu: The Dumpster Battle. I've been a fan of this series since 2015, and I started the manga within a month of the anime. So going to this film was a huge deal for me. (The only other time I've experienced a HQ screening was at the 2018 Crunchyroll convention!) It was awesome being at the theater with fellow fans wearing jerseys of our favorite teams, all excited to see our boys on the big screen. 🥰❤️

I absolutely LOVED how the film began, showing us Kenma and Hinata's first meeting but in a different way than in season 1, with the cat and crow staring each other down, and Kuroo overhearing their conversation from nearby. It really set the mood, especially with the incredible score (honestly the soundtrack is one of my favorite aspects of the movie).

However, I was upset that they left out the backstory of Nekomata and Ukai Sr. These flashbacks are so important to give the rivalry context and depth. The fact that these two characters met in middle school, and then had this battle decades later as elders, was so impactful. Not showing the history of their relationship affected the film's emotional impact. In my opinion, THIS was the biggest flaw in the script.

While we're on the negatives: I do think the film relied a lot on prior knowledge of the story. Which is to be expected, it's basically the 5th season of a show, but I don't think even casual fans would be able to keep up with how many characters and plot points quickly came and went. I recall being perplexed at certain things they chose to keep in, some of which were fun, but not necessary and just muddled the viewing experience.

Also: the subtitles. I've always had a beef with how Crunchyroll does subs. Not the translators themselves (I LOVE YOU GUYS YOU'RE AMAZING) but how they place the text. It was hard to distinguish between the primary and secondary dialogue. They were often stacked onto each other, with the barest hint of italics to differentiate. Honestly, while some background dialogue was great, I would've rather gone without to avoid confusion.

There were some other weakness, like the pacing and important character moments they cut. Obviously, as a MASSIVE fan, I would want everything to be adapted fully and perfectly. But that was never going to happen with a 1.5 hour film. 🤷‍♀️ The screenwriters did a really impressive job considering what they were tasked with accomplishing. Major kudos to them!

Now, on to the things I loved about the movie:

The animation. Gods, the animation was fantastic, such a breath of fresh air after season 4. I could tell how much care the artists put into this project. Some scenes literally had me speechless, sitting there frozen with my mouth hanging open. The final rally was animated ENTIRELY in Kenma's POV. The music faded out; you could here his heavy breathing and the team calling to each other. It made you feel like you were on the court. I've never seen anything like it before.

I mentioned the score earlier, but special shout out to the musicians, composers, and everyone involved in the soundtrack. 👏 I literally had goosebumps multiple times. And having a track by SPYAIR playing during the end credits gave me so much fuzzy nostalgia!

The voice acting was amazing. Kenma's actor, Yuki Kaji, absolutely hit it out of the park. He's always been one of my faves from the cast, but he went above and beyond in this film. But everyone did, really. It was so important for me to see the Japanese version FIRST to hear this wonderful cast who I've been following for the past 9 years.

Kuroo Testsuro. Good lord, did I come out of the theater having fallen completely in love with Kuroo. 😍❤️ His character is just SO GOOD, full of passion and love for his friends and the sport itself. I think the movie really highlighted this. (And it made me so emotional, knowing where he ended up in the future!)

BOKUTO AND AKAASHI. Thank you, movie team for letting them have their cute little moments. Especially the one with Yachi. I love these two so much. I'm very scared that their biggest arc, aka the Mujinazaka match, won't be animated. But I'm so grateful we got them in this film.

The after credits scene. REMEMBER TO STAY AFTER THE FIRST CREDITS YOU GUYS! They included the hilarious exchange between Kuroo and Daishou after the match, which was a really fun way to end things. 😆 Mika's little "You ready?" to her silly snake boyfriend was perfect. It made me giggle.

Okay, those are my initial thoughts! If I see the film again I might update this. For now, let me just say I really enjoyed it overall and it was such a special experience seeing these beloved characters on the silver screen. I still mourn the loss of a 5th season, and I'm nervous about what will be cut from the final movie... but that's future Mari's problem... 😅

Okay, so I know you said you see 'To have and to hold' as finished, but I would by lying if I said I wasn't dying for more. 😭❤️

More than anything I'd love to see how the main character gradually warmed up to Billy. I mean, by the end of the story she does say that they have two sons (and clearly another baby on the way).

Would you ever consider writing a continuation? I'm especially curious to see them during the pregnancy stage of their firstborn son.

Like how did they find out that they were expecting? I'd be so funny if Billy connected the dots before the main character or at least starts to suspect that she might be pregnant. Like, maybe he'll notice that she has the exact same food cravings his own mother (Catherine) had when she was carrying his younger brother (Joseph). But he's not telling her right away of his suspicions because he doesn't want to jinx it. And the main character cannot for the life of her understand why for the past couple of days Billy is acting so strange around her. 🤣

Now comes another question: what would the Bonney women crave during their pregnancy? 🤔

Or maybe still during the pregnancy stage the main character is still pretty distant with Billy. But then one day she wakes up in the middle of the night to Billy talking to her stomach (where their child is) because he wants the baby to recognize his voice? 🥹

Okay, I'll stop now because I'm getting ahead of myself. If you didn't guess already someone's period might be starting soon, hence the baby/pregnancy content fever. 🤣

But regardless whether this was only a one-shot or not, I can say with full confidence: this Billy the Kid fic is going to my favorites.

You did such an amazing job! And you didn't watch the series? Girl... I'm in awe.👏

Artemis - Ashley Johnson

This might not hit for a lot of people, but I think Ashley Johnson would be a FANTASTIC Artemis. She has the gentleness of moonlight but harshness of pitch black night. I could totally see her ruling over a pack of young lesbians idk bout any of you 🤷‍♀️ I also think she pairs up fantastically with Yung Gravy. Perfect ‘polar opposite’ pairing of you ask me.

Atlas - Christopher Judge

So for those who don’t know, this guy voices Kratos from the new God of War games. And holy shit is he perfect for this role. I’ve always personally thought that Atlas was this large man with a deep voice, something to really be feared. AND MOTHER FUCK DOES THIS MAN HAVE BOTH. HE’S LARGE AND HE MAKES HIMSELF IN CHARGE. I’d die if they got him as Atlas.

Hera -Meryl Streep

Ok ok ok ok BIG LEAP I KNOW. But like??? I can’t explain it but she’d make a great Hera in my eyes. Look at her!! Have you seen her in Devil Wears Prada? Like damn. I’ve also loved her since I was little so, based I guess

Blackjack (voice) - Logan Lerman

Fuck me guys I can’t help it. First of all? It would be funny. I don’t have a second reason other than I really like him. And for what the old movie thought it was making? I don’t think he did a bad job as Percy at all. Do I like the movie at all? Absolutely fuck no. But I still respect all the actors because it wasn’t their fault the movie was shit. As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate Judy Holliday as an actress so much more!!

Everyone should go listen to the song "The Party's Over" from the movie "Bells Are Ringing." You can just feel her emotion even without seeing her. The way her voice cracks near the end and her voice quivers all throughout breaks me every time. There's nothing like it. I feel pretty safe in saying that you can listen to any musical song prior to the 1960s and there's no song with that much emotion. Even into the 1960s there's not a whole lot (West Side Story may be the exception) but even with West Side Story there's no voice crack. I feel like the way people viewed musical songs is that there was pride involved. A little bit of emotion is fine as long as it doesn't get in the way of your voice sounding perfect. Vocal performance was priority number one. The way that Judy gives an amazing vocal performance but also puts the acting as number 1 is truly unique.

Also just watching her in general she had such range. She could do drama so well and was also incredible with comedic acting!

BTW. Things haven't changed that much either. Even nowadays there isn't too much emotion put into musical performances. If it's a high drama like Les Miserables then you get more extremely dramatic performances. But Bells Are Ringing is a comedy and she put THAT much emotion into it 👏👏❤️❤️

I think it would be so cool if DBZ had kind of a similar "revolution against the celestial realm" plot or some kind of revolution that made it difficult for the fighters to decide which side is "evil" and which side is "good" 😳 (honestly it was for similar reasons I initially really liked the Zamasu arc, like an "inside job").
