Granted, some of these stories have issues in them that I talk about in Isekai Maid (be it things like reinforcing classism, evil maid portrayals, corporal punishment as means of discipline). I do enjoy them but with a critical eye:

The Villainess is Retiring isekai- FL wants an easy life, ML is an absolute puppy figuratively/literally, this one is honestly super sweet with lots of skinship 😳 and pretty comedic. season 2 started

The Siren: Becoming the Villain’s Family regression- not for the feint of heart due to triggering topics but sooo well worth it if you’re ok with topics, amazing lead family, FL is the cutest patootie, ML is a very softhearted tsundere, supporting characters are phenomenal, 10000000/10 art (the novel is sooo good with same illustrator). season 1 completed

The Falcon Princess transformation?- aka Carrier Falcon Princess, terrible family with war going on, FL is kinda ditzy at beginning but becomes reliable, ML thinks he’s going crazy, everyone thinks he’s going crazy. season 2 started

Please Marry Me Again! regression- Would probably rate this couple #1 in terms of best love, I was crying by chapter 3, angsty at first but becomes very fluffy, zero toxic masculinity in this ML (the healthiest ML honestly), kinda tan ML, strong FL, supportive brother that doesn’t become incest. season 1 completed

The Duke’s Bored Daughter is My Master reincarnation- three musketeers vibes from leads and supportive brother, honestly immaculate friend group,, childhood friends -> lovers, slowburn, thigh touching lmao. season 1 completed

The Rewards of Marriage isekai- precious baby Raphel!!! ML is kind of an ass at beginning but it’s understandable, FL is a momma bear, tragic accident in backstory, i love my little family 🥺. season 1 completed

The Villainess’s Stationery Shop isekai- TAN ML CANT STRESS THIS ONE ENOUGH OML, aspiring businesswoman!FL, supporting characters are amazing, sweet baby children oml i love the babies they’re so cute 🥹, horrible family and ex, kinda crack vibes that had me laughing hard, 15/10 art. season 1 completed

Villainess Maker isekai- misunderstandings bc tsundere family, ML is hot with piercings and tattoos which is pretty much what made me read this (reminded me of jungkook), art style was 10/10 but increasingly declines (ch1 and epilogue are so incredibly different, its depressing) i lowkey got bored but its an easy read of 60ish chapters

We've seen many concepts played out:

manhwas where the FL can find Korean ingredients and make Korean dishes (Cooking Wizard, Divorcing my Tyrant Husband, Lady Chef Royale)

focused on bathing (Shall we bathe, duke?)

different kinds of teas from the East (Duchess' 50 tea recipes)

perfumes (The tyrant's only perfumer)

I haven't seen one where the FL has a 10 step skin care routine. Or a detailed hair care routine, with scalp oiling, shampooing, conditioning, hair masks, etc.

Day 69

Despite having grown up with anime, (or maybe because of it) I tend to not question how I interpret the story or characters despite knowing that it was written and created with a different culture in mind. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I don’t really stop and think while I consume a piece of media if there is a cultural gap that I’m missing.

Often those conversations happen after the fact, while discussing it with other people like @wereah, why a writer might have chosen to write characters especially a particular way.

I say this, because recently, I started reading a translated Korean comic. By the way, online comics out of Korea, that are written to be consumed in chapters and in a format that takes advantage of the fact you’re scrolling down, has become very popular as of late.

For this particular comic, it’s called the Villainess’ Stationery Shop, being one of the many isakai (reincarnation) into a story’s villainess stories going around. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine. But what I find fascinating in a, “I am clearing missing something” moment, is the term ‘stationery shop’. Stationery is in reference to mass produced items used to write. This can include planners, pens, pencils, pencil cases, binders, a lot of paper and more recently the trend towards tapes and stickers for scrap booking or bullet journaling. 

But that is not what the main character is referring to, Mel (the character) described her stationery shop as a ‘general store for children’. In fact we see flashbacks of the stationery shop that has inspired her, it not only sold what looked like novelty pens and pencils (the cute ones we may have owned ourselves as children) but also candy. Novelty candy, like beer candy in the shape of beer mugs. So it does sell stationery, but the kind that as little children we would have loved to own because it was cute or neat. It sells snacks, specifically sweets in interesting shapes. And the last chapter I had, she was making a blowing bubble toy, which is not an expensive toy, it’s probably something my mother would have gotten at a dollar store.

So the image I have is that for Mel, a ‘stationery shop’ is literally a ‘general store for children’ in that it is designed to be cheap enough that children could come and spend money by themselves there.

This brings me to my question then, what was the term ‘stationery shop’ originally? And probably, more interestingly to me, what were in these shops? What was it like growing up around a shop like that? How common are they? Are they even really a thing? I don’t know, without having a literal translation I can’t look a shop like this up. An interesting mystery, but I think I would have liked a shop like that as a child.
