Gotham New Rogue 2
It's been a few weeks since Danny started to become the Trickster. To be honest, it is working very well. His core is expanding fast as ectoplasm is regenerating faster than ever before. He is also slowly developing new abilities and gaining more control and powers to his already established abilities.
For instance, Danny used to struggle making clones, but now he can easily create dozens of them with just a thought. He can also change his clothes to whatever he imagines using ectoplasm now. His ice power is also stronger and easier to control. His superhuman body is developing and slowly getting stronger and faster.
Overall, Danny will say that make a smart decision to become a rogue especially since no one has caught him yet. Danny is currently laying on top of a building watching the sun slowly set in the horizon. His stomach suddenly grumbles and he decides to hit the shack before he gets to "work" tonight.
Jumping off the roof, Danny lands and walks to the nearest Batburger while still wearing his rogue suit. He has a totally funny idea today and it involves him being seen in public. Entering the Batburger is like entering a library for some reason. As soon as he enters, everyone goes deathly quiet.
Danny slowly walks towards the cashier and orders his food.
Danny: 5 sets of set C please.
Cashier: Ermm, that will be 60 bucks.
Danny: Here.
After paying for the food, Danny gets his food and sits at one of the tables alone. It's only after he is through his 3rd set that reality is set in for the people. They begin to move and contrary to Danny's expectations, approach him to ask for pictures. Danny allows them some pictures and unknowingly raises his status as Gotham's friendliest rogue.
Suddenly, a white man that screams rich guy, a woman with blonde hair and a black guy wearing Signal's merch approach him. Danny has learned a lot of things from his 14 years of life and 2 years of half life and Danny knows when a rich guy approaches you, it's never good (Sam doesn't have the rich vibe).
Rich guy: Hello Trickster! May we have a meal with you?
Danny: Sure.
Rich guy: Ah, how rude of me. My name is Timothy Jackson Drake-Wayne. These two are my friends, Stephanie Brown and Duke Thomas. You can call me Tim by the way.
Danny: Sure, Tim.
They sit opposite him with their meals and try to make small talks with him while eating. The trio realize that Danny seems to respond a lot better when Steph or Duke is the one to ask the question.
Steph: So, Trickster. Why don't you like my friend here?
Duke: Way to go in being subtle, Steph. Why not ask who is he really next?
Steph: Hey, I can't help it you know. He seems so snarky whenever Tim asks questions. I wanna know if Tim pissed him off or something.
Danny: He is rich, right?
Duke: Err, yes?
Steph: Let's say he is. Why does that matter?
Danny: I hate rich people. And government. But who doesn't hate the government?
Duke: So, eat the rich?
Danny: Yes.
Steph: Cool cool. We are also here just so we could leech him off anyway. We're not really friends.
Tim: Ow, you hurt me by saying that. What happened to our vow of eternal friendships?
Steph: I cross my fingers.
Duke: I lie.
Danny: Hahahaha. You're like my friends.
Tim: You have friends?
Danny: Of course I have friends. And unlike you I don't need money to have friends.
Tim: Sorry sorry. Are your friends also rouges?
Danny: Wouldn't you like to know? Last I need is Batman investigating my friends. I'm sure Batman is part of you rich people group chat or something.
Steph and Duke: *Snickers*
Tim: *Glares at the two* Why would you think Batman is in contact with the rich people?
Danny: Isn't it obvious? Batman has all these high tech gadgets and is always there fast whenever a Wayne is kidnapped. I would even say Batman is being sponsored by the Wayne.
Danny: I also don't like most heroes in general. They are just the government lapdog doing whatever the government wants.
Tim, Steph and Duke frowned at that statement. From the way Danny speaks, it is clear that he has some history against the government. Him being here also means he is at least confident enough to run away if any of the bats are here. Is it just blind confidence or a truly competent ability will remain to be seen.
Tim is just about to refute him when Danny suddenly stands up. All of them tensed up and ready for battle when Danny turns towards one side of the window, waves and disappears right in front of them. They are very confused and when they turn towards the direction Danny was just looking at, they see Batman and Black Bat right on the rooftop across the building.
Batman and Tim nod to each other and they all return to the caves.
-Batcave-
Tim: So you all hear the conversation right?
Dick: Except at the end where the sound becomes blurred for a moment, we hear everything.
Tim: Good. So what are your thoughts on this?
Damian: It is pretty self explanatory Drake. He has a personal hatred towards the government and that extends to all bodies of government or people he thought is connected to the government.
Tim: But why though? Is the hatred towards the government something as simple because he is a criminal? Or is there something else towards it?
Bruce: There is nothing to find about him currently with our limited resources about him. Return to the manor for today and take some rest. We will investigate it later.
All of them return to the manor and rest for the night.
-2 weeks later-
The Trickster is standing in front of an unconscious and tied up Batman. He is giggling loudly that evolves into full blown laughter.
He takes off Batman's belt and starts to pull out stuff one after another. Soon, he found the item that he needed.
Trickster: Hahahahahahaha. I have finally got it. The strongest weapon in the world!
The batfam that is watching the live broadcast shiver as they watch Trickster holds out the black object high in the sky.

As someone who was a 13 yr old Brit in 2005 I had a visceral reaction to seeing each and every one of these tracks.
My friend at school was obsessed with X Factor at the time and had a massive crush on this guy. I never got the appeal and I wonder if that's why our friendship died.
Look, we all did it. Played around with our Nokia 1110 ringtones and jokingly set this up. I don't know why we have to be all defensive about it. Whilst I miss the custom ringtone era, I'm glad this villain died off with his annoying "Baa aramba baa bom baa barooumba..."
I'm not saying we were, but as a tween listening to PCD you felt so grown up and dare I say 'sexy' as you showed off you bedroom choreography at the local SNAP disco. We weren't of course. We were children. But that didn't stop us performing mildly risquĂŠ moves in our New Look party outfits.
I voted for this one because even 20 years later, I can still bop along to this without feeling like I've gone back in time. It's timeless. And one of the best charity singles to come out of the noughties.
Nope. Can't stand that fucking chipmunk singing. Hate this with a firey passion and I'm annoyed to be reminded this exists.
I'm not proud to admit this, but before this song came out I had no idea who Madonna was. So all I knew about the supposed queen of pop was she was a ~50 something prancing around in a skimpy leotard. I've since learnt the error of my ways and come to appreciate her contribution to music, but this song will forever be 'meh'.
So I had to check Wikipedia on this because apparently this was Westlife's 1st single without my beloved Brian. I remember the tragic heartbreak only a tween girl can experience when their favourite in a boy band decides to leave, so although this song is remarkable I probably wasn't vibing it as much as I might have 2 years prior.
Another 'let me try and be sexy' song that was probably inappropriate for someone not even in puberty yet. I never did get why they each wore such a ridiculous outfit to presumably their office?! You can still flirt over the fax machine without needing to be in just your pants Mutya!
This was a viral music video before going viral was really a thing. I must have watched this silly billboard graffiti a hundred times. The song itself was alright, more akin to Ironic Alanis in vibes, but I know I watched this on repeat for the 'will they, won't they' story.
"I'm Luke, I'm 5 and my dad's Bruce Lee". I nearly picked this in the poll, but let's be honest I haven't got it on any Spotify playlist (unlike McFly). The cartoon music video was so cute and the song itself is really sweet. Haven't listened to it in ages but I might sing it to myself if I ever come across a yellow digger blocking traffic.
I had to look this one up tbh. I like the Gorillaz, I do, but their songs aren't exactly recognisable from name alone. Once I hit play though, it all came flooding back and I'm not mad the Americans have made this sweep the poll, despite it being quite niche for a British audience.
Will Smith was still doing music in 2005? Really?! Wow, did not remeber that at all! Having said that, I do know this song, I just assumed it was older. But nope, that music video is straight outta 2005 fo' shizzle!
i desperately want to do one of those âpick a song thatâs turning 20 in 2025â polls but instead of all the songs being chosen to appeal directly to american tumblr users who had an emo phase i will take them, with bare minimum selectivity or curation, from the uk official year end charts so that everybody has to choose between shayne ward and the crazy frog song

The timer went off once again letting you know that all of the cookies were now officially done baking. As you were taking them out of the oven and placing them on the cooling rack, Erin attempted to grab one to eat it when you quickly slapped her hand away resulting in her letting out a yelp followed by her glaring at you.
âOw!â
âThose are specifically for Joey so we can decorate them once he gets here. I literally just made you an entire cheesecake.â
âBut I want a cookie, too!â Erin exclaimed, but you weren't budging.
âNo and he should be here soon.â
As you sat at the table in your small kitchen, Erin sat across from you and had begun eating her cheesecake when you suddenly asked her a question which caught her off guard.
âErin, what if me and Joe break up? And that cheesecake was not meant for it to be eaten in one sitting.â You casually asked as you unlocked your phone to play one of the many games that you had installed.
âHuh? What in the world are you even talking about? And I'll just ask for another one.â She asked as she put her fork down to look at you.
âWhat if we break up and we don't work out? I literally just hopped from one relationship to another andâŚâ
âStop. Just stop. I have on my Christmas sweater and I am eating my Christmas treats you made me and we are listening to Justin Bieber's Under the Mistletoe and you are fucking the vibe up.â
âButâŚâ
âNo, we are not doing this. You two haven't been together very long, but Joe literally worships the ground you walk on. The way he even looks at you is insane. That boy is IN LOVE.â Erin said as she now opened the freezer to take out the ice cream you thought you were discreetly hiding from her, but it looks as though you efforts had failed.
âBut what if it's too good to be true? Sometimes It doesn't even feel real.â
âYou literally have no idea of what happiness looks like even if it hits you in the face. He has been after you basically the entire semester and now that he finally has you and you have him, you think that the two of you are going to end up breaking up? Make it make sense, babe.â
âEverything started out too good to be true with Trevor and look what happened with that.â
âUh no, boo. Trevor had been an asshole from the beginning, it just took you forever and a day to notice. Everyone else saw it but you. Youâve been treated like shit for so long that your ass is literally blinded to how good you actually have it. I mean Joe hit me up a few weeks ago to help him pick out your Christmas gift or gifts I should say.â
âWait, he did what?â
âOops. I wasnât supposed to say anything so letâs just pretend I didnât. But they're really pretty and I know that youâre going to like it.â
âI just⌠heâs really important to me and I just want this to work out between us.â
âAnd it will. I literally started planning the wedding the day you two met because I saw the way you lit up when you talked about him. Itâs going to work out and I will be the first person to say âI told you soâ when you are walking down the aisle.â
âIâm holding you to that seeing as itâs still pretty early to be singing about wedding bells.â
âBut for now, itâs December, we almost made it through our first semester as college students, you have a very cute boyfriend who wants to spend every waking moment of the day with you so you need to make the most of it.â
âYouâre right, I do need to make the most of it seeing as itâll be a few weeks where we wonât see each other since heâs going back home.â
âAnd his birthday is coming up too. So, my vote is to have Christmas early with the two of you. Hopefully by doing this you wonât miss him so much on the actual day since the two of you kind of already celebrated in your own way.â
âI mean, I did get us matching Christmas pajamas to decorate our cookies, drink hot chocolate, and watch cheesy Hallmark movies.â
âSee? Perfect. And I know that he is going to love every minute of it. But for now, I am going to go study for one of my many finals and hope and pray that the words on the pages in the textbooks somehow transfer themselves to my brain. Let me know how everything goes.â Erin told you as she wrapped up her cheesecake and placed it in a plastic bag hoping none of the filling would get on the seats in her car.
âMe saying âI told you soâ is going to hit so hard in a few years. ButâŚ.â She was cut off mid-sentence as there was a knock on the door.
âAnd look at that, there he is. Let's go see your future husband.â
You couldn't help but to laugh and shake your head at Erin as she was gathering all of her things, while you went to go and answer the door. Once you did, you were met with your boyfriend carrying a shitload of different bags and him leaning down to kiss you.
âOkay, you two! Spare my eyes, I'm leaving so Joe can turn you every way but loose without me having to see it.â
âBye, Erin.â Was all you said as she continued to smile at the both of you.
âHi Joe, Bye Joe.â She told him as he fully walked into your apartment as she was headed out the door.
âBye Erin.â
Once the two of you were by yourselves, you immediately started questioning Joe about the many bags he brought.
âUh, babe? Are you moving in and didn't tell me yet?â You asked and he let out a laugh before starting to open some of them and pull out their contents.
âI just bought a bunch of different things we could do. It's almost finals week and I wanted to spend as much time with you as possible. And you have literally been playing this album since the day after Halloween.â
âAww, I love it. Okay so tell me what you bought. And what about it!?â You asked as he had set everything down and motioned for you to sit down on the couch so he could show you.
âSo my chess set. Ever since I taught you how to play, you said that you were going to try and beat me before the semester was over and never mind that I even said anything. Low key convinced that you're going to break up with me and get with Justin.â
âVery true but athletes are my thing, not singers.â
âMy telescope since you love learning about space as much as I do. And I guess that means I'm safe?â
âI am loving this so far and yes, babe. You're safe.â You told him as you placed the chess set on the table.
âMadden. Since I know if you were able to be on the field with us, you would be. But I mean I can't sing all that well, but if you want me to serenade you just say the word.â
âGood point and seriously?â You replied while laughing.
âAnd I think that's it for now. I could only carry so much. But you'll be the one hitting high notes with how good I'm making you feel.â He told you as he shrugged while you gave him a small smile while also shaking your head at him.
âIt's absolutely perfect and I have something for you too. I'm ignoring that last part.â
âWhat is it? Before the night is over, I'm making it happen.â Joe said as you ran into your bedroom to find the bag that they were in before coming back out into the living room.
âMatching Christmas pajamas.â
âOh, so we're that type of couple now?â Joe teased as you rolled your eyes.
âYes, and this is literally going to happen starting from this year until forever.â You replied as Joe moved closer towards you and put his finger underneath your chin in order for you to be able to look up at him.
âForever? I like the sound of that.â He quietly said while leaning down to kiss you.
âBut for now, we also have cookies to decorate that I baked and hot chocolate to drink.â
âLetâs do it.â
The two of you got comfortable in your pajamas before starting to decorate the cookies and you were multitasking with making the hot chocolate at the same time.
Joe was concentrating hard when you decided to peek over and take a look at what he was doing.
âJoey, I thought you were making a Santa cookie?â You asked while a little bit confused on what you were actually looking at.
âI am! This looks like Santa! I just need to do his beard.â
âAnd his hat.â You added noticing that was missing also.
âNot everyone can be an amazing baker in their spare time like you.â
âHmm, you're right, but it doesn't look bad. If I opened my own bakery, I might hire you. I do happen to be a woman of many talents. So, someone mentioned to me that you got my Christmas gift already?â
Joe stopped decorating his cookie to look at you with a blank stare.
âNo. I'm not telling you what it is and I am never telling Erin anything else ever again.â
âBut babe!â
âNo. Final answer.â Joe replied as you rolled your eyes at him which then led to him pinching your cheek.
âFix your face. I want it to be a surprise and I don't plan on spoiling it for you.â
âWell I got you a gift for your birthday as well as Christmas. It didn't feel right combining both of them together.â
âAnd unlike my girlfriend, I'm going to be patient and wait.â
âYou mean to tell me that you aren't the least bit curious about what I got you?â You asked him and you could tell he was thinking about his answer before he said it.
âNope.â
âLiar. I know that you definitely want to know. But I'll just say I know that both of them are something that you're really going to love.â You told him as you reached up to kiss him.
âAs much as I love you?â
âNo, but knowing you it might come close.â You told him as you were now putting the final touches on the hot chocolate you made for the two of you and handed him his mug.
âAnd like I said, I'll be patient unlike some other people.â
âI'm ignoring you. Anyway, break out the telescope since it's clear tonight and we'll be able to see something.â
Once Joe had gotten the telescope set up by the window, you were just finishing your hot chocolate and went to place your mug in the dishwasher before going back into the living room and seeing Joe with a bashful smile across his face.
âWhy are you smiling at me like that?â You asked while wrapping your arms around him and Joe leaned down to place a kiss on your forehead before responding to you.
âI'm about to show you. Stand in front of me and look through it. Don't adjust anything.â He said as he slowly turned you around so that you would be facing it.
You did as you were told and noticed that it was focused on one single star.
âI see it, babe. What's so special about it?â You asked as you turned back to look at him and he simply handed you an envelope.
âIt's the star that I got named after us.â
Your eyes went wide and a smile broke out on your face as you took out the contents of the envelope and it simply said Y/N and Joey's Star at the top.
Underneath was a map detailing where you would be able to find it.
âSo no matter where we are, whether together or apart. We can be able to look at it at the same time. This isn't a part of your Christmas gifts by the way, I just wanted to do it since I figured you would like it.â He shyly told you as the smile became wider on your face. You didn't say anything, but simply wrapped your arms around him once again.
âThis was⌠no⌠this is definitely the sweetest thing that anyone has ever done for me. I honestly wouldn't have even been upset if this did end up being my Christmas gift. I love it and I love you which you already knew, but I figured that I would tell you anyway.â You quietly told him as he leaned down to place several kisses on your lips.
âAnd I love you. Remember earlier how you mentioned that matching pajamas are going to be a thing for us forever?â Joe asked and you gave him a swift nod.
âMm hmm, what about it?â
âThis is also going to be something that we have forever. Any time we get in a disagreement or we're not seeing eye to eye with each other, we need to remember that we're in this together for the long run. And looking up at the star can remind us of that. I know we haven't been together for very long, but I want this with you and I've been saying from day one how I'm going to treat you how you deserve to be treated.â Joe confessed and the smile on your face couldn't help but to get bigger.
âI'm going to hold you to that Burrow.â
âHow about you hold me to this too? Look up for me?â
As you looked up, you saw that Joe was holding a mistletoe above the both of you.
âAny excuse to get more kisses from me, huh?â You playfully asked him and was met with a smirk.
âI mean, I've been getting kisses from the moment I got here, but this is just a plus.â He told you as he leaned down and you reached up to meet him halfway.
âAnd there will be many more where that came from.â
âSanta definitely did his big one this year.â
âHow so?â
âI get to spend it with someone who I know cares about me just as much as I care about them. That's literally all I asked for.â

A Holiday to Remember
SUMMARY: When plans with your family fall through, an unexpected invitation leads you to spending Christmas with Glen - and his lively, close-knit family. You find yourself swept up in the warmth of holiday traditions and the undeniable pull of a connection you never saw coming. Between stolen moments under twinkling lights and whispered confessions, the boundaries of friendship blur, leaving you to wonder if this Christmas could be the start of something extraordinary or just a fleeting holiday dream.
A/N: So I was hoping to have this out before or on Christmas but then I got writer's block and struggled to finish it. And then I got inspiration...maybe too much inspiration. I watched Anyone But You and then a couple Hallmark movies so this definitely has a rom-com/cheesy Hallmark vibe to it. That's also why this is so long because as I was watching those movies I got ideas for moments to add to the story. But hopefully you all enjoy this!
WARNINGS: Some light cursing, maybe? Otherwise I don't think there's any warnings. Just 17k words of cute fluffy wholesomeness.
WORD COUNT: 17.5k (I got a little carried away with this one.)

The warm glow of string lights hung delicately along the restaurant's windows, casting a cozy hue on the bustling Los Angeles sidewalk. You took a deep breath, smoothing your sweater as you stepped inside, the gentle hum of conversation and clinking glasses enveloping you.
Approaching the host stand, you offered a polite smile. "Hi, Iâm here for Glen Powellâs reservation."
The host, a young woman with a sleek bob and a professional smile, glanced at her list before nodding. "Of course. Right this way." She grabbed a menu and gestured for you to follow her through the dimly lit dining room.
As you weaved between tables, your nerves fluttered faintly, though you werenât sure why. It wasnât like this was anything newâjust dinner with Glen. Something youâd done dozens of times.
The host led you to a table tucked in the back corner, offering a little more privacy from the busy main floor. Glen spotted you almost immediately. He set his phone down and stood up, his familiar, easy grin spreading across his face as he opened his arms.
âThere she is,â he said warmly, pulling you into a hug as soon as you reached him. His cologneâa blend of something woodsy and cleanâwrapped around you, as comforting as the embrace itself.
âSorry Iâm late,â you murmured against his shoulder before pulling back. âTraffic was a nightmare.â
He waved off your apology as you both sat down, his smile never faltering. âYouâre in L.A.âisnât traffic always a nightmare?â He leaned forward slightly, his elbows resting on the edge of the table. âBesides, youâre here now, and thatâs all that matters.â
The way his gaze lingered on you for just a second too long made your stomach flutter, but you quickly pushed the feeling aside. It was Glen, your friend. Nothing more.
You picked up the menu and skimmed over the options, even though you werenât really focusing on the words. Glen sat across from you, flipping his own menu open but still managing to glance your way every few moments.
âSo,â you asked, breaking the comfortable silence. âHowâs the movie coming along? Are you still filming, or are you finally getting some time to breathe?â
Glen chuckled softly, setting the menu down as he leaned back in his chair. âWe wrapped a few days ago, actually. Post-production is in full swing now, so itâs out of my hands now. Now I can take a break and get some normalcy.â
âNormalcy,â you repeated, arching an eyebrow. âFor you, that probably means jetting off somewhere, doesnât it?â
He smirked, the corners of his eyes crinkling. âOkay, maybe my version of ânormalâ is a little skewed. But Iâm just going back to Austin for a few days. Nothing too crazy. What about you? Howâs work? Are they letting you off the hook at all this holiday season?â
You sighed, your eyes drifting back to the menu as you tried to keep your voice light. âItâs fine. Busy, as always. But I guess thatâs better than having nothing to do, right?â
He frowned slightly, studying you with an intensity that made you squirm just a little. âYou sure youâre doing okay?â
âYeah,â you said quickly, forcing a smile. âIâm good. Itâs justâwork has been hectic, and I havenât really had time to think about the holidays.â
His brow furrowed. âWait. Donât tell me youâre not going home for Christmas.â
You hesitated, suddenly feeling self-conscious. âItâs just⌠complicated,â you admitted, your voice quieter now. âMy familyâs so far away, and with work, I just couldnât make the timing work. So, yeah, Iâll be here this year. But itâs not a big deal.â
Glenâs jaw tightened, and you could practically see the wheels turning in his head. âYouâre spending Christmas alone?â
You shrugged, trying to play it off. âIâll survive.â
âNo way,â he said firmly, shaking his head. âThatâs not happening.â
You blinked, startled by his sudden intensity. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean youâre coming with me,â he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. âTo Texas. You canât spend Christmas aloneâthatâs just⌠wrong.â
âGlen,â you began, already shaking your head. âI canât just crash your familyâs holiday. Thatâs not fair to themâor to you.â
âTheyâd love you,â he interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. âAnd itâs not crashing if youâre invited. Which you are. Officially. Come on, whatâs holding you back?â
You opened your mouth to protest again, but the way he was looking at youâearnest, determined, like he wouldnât take no for an answerâmade the words catch in your throat.
âItâs just a couple of days,â he added, his voice softening now. âAnd I promise, itâll be fun. Think of it as an adventure.â
You hesitated, your resolve wavering under the weight of his sincerity. Maybe, just maybe, he was right.
âGlen, I canât just pack up and leave,â you said, trying to keep your tone firm. âI only have a couple of days off for the holiday, andââ
âPerfect,â he interrupted with a grin. âIâm only staying three days anyway. Weâll head out the morning of the 23rd, and weâll be back by the 26th.â
You narrowed your eyes at him. âItâs not that simple. Do you know how expensive last-minute flights are right now? Not to mention the hassle of even finding oneâeverythingâs probably booked solid.â
His grin didnât falter. âIâll help you find a flight. Hell, Iâll even cover it if thatâs whatâs holding you back.â
Your eyebrows shot up. âGlen, no. Youâre not paying for my ticket.â
âWhy not? Consider it my Christmas gift to you,â he said, leaning back in his chair with a casual shrug, as if he hadnât just offered something outrageous.
You scoffed. âYouâre insane.â
âIâm resourceful,â he corrected, his eyes twinkling with amusement. âAnd if it really comes down to it, Iâll fly you there myself.â
You couldnât help but laugh at that, shaking your head. âNow that seems like a gross misuse of your pilotâs license.â
âDesperate times call for desperate measures,â he said with a smirk.
You rolled your eyes, but his determination was starting to chip away at your defenses. âGlen, I appreciate the offer, but I really donât want to intrude on your familyâs holiday. Itâs their time with you, and Iâd just beââ
âA welcome guest,â he cut in, his voice softer now. âTrust me, theyâd love to have you there. My momâs been asking when sheâs going to meet my mysterious âfriendâ I talk about anyway. This is the perfect chance.â
Your cheeks warmed at that, and you looked away, suddenly very interested in the pattern on your napkin. âI donât knowâŚâ
âCome on,â he urged, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. âItâll be fun. Youâll get to relax, eat some great food, and experience the chaos that is my family at Christmas. What do you have to lose?â
You sighed, knowing he wasnât going to let this go. âWhat about the fact that Iâll probably end up sharing a room with one of your nieces or sleeping on the couch? Not exactly my idea of a restful holiday.â
âWrong again,â he said with a triumphant grin. âWe will be staying at my place. I have plenty of space. Iâll even take the couch if you want the nice bed.â
You laughed despite yourself, the mental image of Glen curled up on his own couch making it impossible to stay serious. âYouâre ridiculous.â
âAnd youâre running out of excuses,â he pointed out, his grin widening. âSo? Whatâs it going to be?â
You hesitated, your gaze meeting his. There was something in his eyesâan openness, a genuine warmthâthat made it hard to say no.
âFine,â you said finally, throwing your hands up in defeat. âYou win. Iâll go.â
His face lit up, and he reached across the table to squeeze your hand. âYou wonât regret it. I promise.â
âYouâd better be right,â you teased, though you couldnât help but smile back at him.

The late afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the Austin skyline as Glen navigated the bustling city streets, the hum of his truck filling the comfortable silence. You sat quietly in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the vibrant murals and quirky storefronts that zipped past. Normally, youâd be chatting nonstop, asking Glen a million questions about the city or teasing him about his questionable playlist choices. But now, your hands fidgeted in your lap, and your lips pressed into a thin line, your mind elsewhere.
âYouâre kind of quiet over there. Youâve said about five words since we got here,â Glen remarked, his voice light but tinged with curiosity. He glanced at you briefly, his brows furrowing in concern before turning his attention back to the road. âThatâs gotta be some kind of record for you.â
You blinked, his comment pulling you from your thoughts. Turning to face him, you tried to muster a small smile. âSorry. Just... a lot on my mind, I guess.â
Glen didnât look convinced. âUh-huh,â he said, his tone skeptical. âThis wouldnât have anything to do with meeting my family, would it?â
You sighed, leaning your head back against the seat. âMaybe a little.â
He chuckled softly, shaking his head. âRelax! Youâve got nothing to worry about, you know. Theyâre going to love you. Iâm the one theyâre stuck with, remember?â
You couldnât help but laugh at that, but the sound was short-lived. âItâs not that Iâm worried they wonât like me,â you admitted. âItâs just... I donât know. What if I say something dumb? Or trip over the Christmas tree? Orââ
âHey,â Glen interrupted, his voice gentle. At a red light, he reached over and placed a warm hand on your knee, giving it a reassuring squeeze. âYouâre overthinking this. My familyâs not expecting perfection, okay? Theyâre just excited to meet the person Iâve been talking about nonstop for the last couple of months.â
Your eyes widened at his confession, heat rushing to your cheeks. âYouâve been talking about me?â
Glen grinned, the light turning green as he started driving again. âObviously. What kind of friend would I be if I didnât brag about how great you are?â He paused, then added with a teasing smirk, âAlthough I may have left out the part where you canât handle spicy food. Donât let my momâs salsa scare you off, alright?â
That earned a genuine laugh from you, and Glen shot you a quick, satisfied look before turning his attention back to the road.
As the city gave way to sprawling suburbs and then the open, winding roads on the edge of Austin, Glenâs demeanor remained steadyâcalm, reassuring, and lighthearted. He pointed out landmarks along the way, sharing stories about his time growing up in the area and cracking jokes to pull you out of your nervous headspace.
âYou doing okay over there?â he asked after a while, glancing at you again.
âYeah,â you said softly, a small smile tugging at your lips. âThanks for putting up with me.â
âPutting up with you?â Glen repeated, feigning offense. âYou think I invited you out here because I had to? Please.â
The sincerity in his tone caught you off guard, your heart skipping a beat. Before you could dwell on it too much, Glen reached over to nudge your shoulder playfully.Â
âSeriously, relax,â he said with a grin. âYouâll fit right in. And if anyone gives you a hard time, theyâll have to answer to me.â
You smiled at that, the knot in your stomach loosening slightly. Glen had a way of making you feel like everything was going to be okay, even when your own thoughts tried to convince you otherwise.
When he finally pulled into the gravel driveway of his house, nestled on a quiet piece of land just outside the city, the sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Glen parked the truck and turned to you with an encouraging smile.
âAlright,â he said, unbuckling his seatbelt. âFirst stop: my place. Letâs drop off your stuff and then weâll head over to my parentsâ house. Sound good?â
âYeah,â you said, taking a deep breath as you climbed out of the truck. âSounds good.â
Glen led the way up the front porch steps, his boots thudding lightly against the wood. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, stepping aside to let you enter first.
âWelcome to Casa de Glen,â he said with a grin, sweeping his arm theatrically as you stepped inside.
The interior was exactly what youâd imaginedâa perfect blend of cozy and modern. Warm wood floors stretched throughout the open-concept space, and the living room featured a large leather couch and a stone fireplace that was clearly the centerpiece of the room. A framed poster of Top Gun: Maverick hung on one wall, balanced by shelves filled with books, photos, and a few sports trophies.
âWow,â you said, taking it all in. âItâs nice. It feels... you.â
âThatâs what I was going for,â he said, closing the door behind you. âCome on, Iâll show you around.â
He guided you through the living room and into the kitchen, which was sleek and modern with stainless steel appliances and a large island in the center. âThis is where the magic happens,â he said, patting the countertop. âBy magic, I mean reheating leftovers and making the occasional breakfast taco.â
You laughed, running your hand along the cool stone of the counter. âVery impressive.â
He pointed out a small office that doubled as a gym, then led you to the back door, which opened onto a sprawling patio overlooking a modest backyard. Twinkling string lights were strung across the patio, and a firepit sat off to the side, surrounded by chairs.
âThis is great,â you said, stepping out onto the patio and taking in the peaceful view.
âItâs my favorite spot,â Glen admitted, leaning against the doorframe. âIf you need to escape the chaos over the next few days, feel free to sneak out here.â
The offer warmed your heart, but before you could respond, Glen pushed off the doorframe and motioned back inside. âCome on, letâs get your bags upstairs.â
He carried your suitcase up the staircase, which was adorned with simple but tasteful decorationsâa mix of family photos, framed movie posters, and a few awards heâd picked up over the years. At the top of the stairs, he turned to the left and opened a door.
âThis is the guest room,â he said, stepping aside to let you enter.
The room was cozy, with a plush queen-sized bed covered in a navy-blue comforter, a small desk by the window, and a few decorative touches that made it feel welcomingâa basket of rolled-up blankets, a lamp with a warm glow, and a stack of books on the nightstand.
âThis is nice,â you said, setting your carry-on bag down by the bed.
âI figured youâd want your own space,â Glen said, setting your suitcase by the desk. âBathroomâs just down the hall, and there are extra towels in the closet if you need them.â
âThanks,â you said softly, meeting his eyes.
He hesitated for a moment, as if debating whether to say something, before giving you a small smile. âAlright, let me show you the rest of the upstairs.â
You followed him back out into the hall, where he pointed out the bathroom and a smaller guest room that had been converted into a second office. Finally, he led you to the master bedroom at the end of the hall.
âAnd this is where the magic really happens,â he joked, pushing open the door to reveal a spacious room with a king-sized bed, a walk-in closet, and a sliding door that led to a private balcony.
You rolled your eyes but couldnât help laughing. âYou and your magic. Iâm starting to think you have a pretty loose definition of the word.â
âHey, I have my moments,â he said with a wink.
He led you back downstairs, where the tour ended in the living room. âAlright, thatâs the grand tour,â he said, clapping his hands together. âWhat do you think?â
âItâs great,â you said honestly. âIt feels very...you. Like even if I didnât know this was your house I could see you fitting in here.â
And you meant it. Youâd been to Glenâs place in Los Angeles before. And it was comfortable and fine enough. But it felt more like a bachelor pad. But this house here in Austin felt like him. It felt like home.
âGood,â he said, his smile softening. âIâm glad you like it. Now, you ready to meet the chaos that is my family?â
Your stomach flipped nervously, but Glenâs easy smile was enough to settle you. âReady as Iâll ever be,â you said.
âPerfect,â he said, grabbing his keys off the counter. âLetâs do this.â
*****
The truck rumbled to a stop in front of the charming two-story house, its exterior painted a warm cream color with dark green shutters. Wreaths adorned the windows, and strings of twinkling lights outlined the roof, giving it a postcard-worthy holiday glow. Glen shifted the truck into park, but before he could even cut the engine, the front door burst open, and a wave of people spilled out onto the porch.
âHere we go,â Glen muttered with a grin, glancing at you. âBrace yourself.â
Your heart raced as his mom was the first to step forward, her arms already open as she made her way down the steps. Cyndy Powell was the picture of warmth, her hair perfectly styled, and her face glowing with excitement. Behind her, Glenâs dad, Glen Sr., stood with an easygoing smile, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. His sisters werenât far behindâLeslie, the youngest, bounced on her toes with a wide grin, while Lauren, the oldest, followed at a more measured pace, one hand gripping the tiny hand of Glenâs nephew. Glenâs niece trailed behind, clinging to Laurenâs husband.
âGlen!â Cyndy called, waving both hands like she hadnât seen her son in years, even though heâd assured you it had only been a couple of weeks.
You opened your door cautiously as Glen hopped out of the truck, meeting his mom halfway with a hug.Â
âHey, Mom,â he said, his voice filled with affection.
Cyndy pulled back just enough to cup his face. âYou look too thin,â she said, making him laugh. âAre you eating?â
âIâm fine, Mom,â Glen assured her, glancing over his shoulder at you.
You hesitated for half a second before stepping out of the truck, suddenly feeling like every pair of eyes was on you. Cyndyâs expression shifted immediately to one of pure delight as she made a beeline for you.
âAnd you must be the one Glen keeps telling us about!â she said, pulling you into a hug before you could even respond. âOh, itâs so good to finally meet you. Iâm Cyndy.â
âHi, Mrs. Powell,â you managed, your voice slightly muffled by the hug. âItâs really nice to meet you, too.â
âOh, please, call me Cyndy,â she insisted, pulling back to hold you at armâs length. âYouâre even prettier than Glen said.â
âMom,â Glen groaned, rubbing the back of his neck as he came to stand beside you.
âWhat?â Cyndy said innocently before ushering you both toward the rest of the group. âCome on, everyoneâs dying to meet her.â
One by one, you were introducedâGlen Sr., who gave you a firm handshake and a kind smile; Leslie, who immediately wrapped you in a hug and declared you were âway too cool to be hanging out with Glenâ; Lauren, who gave you a warm smile and said sheâd heard so much about you; and finally, Laurenâs twins, who peeked out from behind their dad shyly until Glen crouched down to scoop them up in a playful hug.
âAlright, alright,â Glen said, standing with a twin on each hip as he turned back to his family. âLet her breathe, would you? Sheâs not used to all this chaos.â
âChaos?â Cyndy said, feigning offense. âThis is love, Glen. Pure holiday love.â
You laughed, but Glen caught the way your shoulders tensed, and he stepped closer, his hand resting lightly on your lower back. âYou okay?â he asked softly, his tone just for you.
âYeah,â you said quickly, offering him a reassuring smile. âItâs just... a lot.â
âDonât worry,â he said with a wink. âIâll run interference if I have to.â
Before you could respond, Cyndy was ushering everyone inside, rattling off questions about the drive and insisting you must be starving after traveling all day. You followed the group into the house, which was every bit as welcoming as its exteriorâsoft, cozy furniture, a roaring fire in the living room, and the scent of something sweet wafting from the kitchen.
You shrugged out of your coat and Glen stepped closer, his hands brushing against your shoulders as he helped slide it off. The gesture was so natural, so easy, that it sent a little flutter through your chest.
âHere, Iâll take that.â His voice was casual, but the faint smile he gave you as he carefully hung your coat on the rack was anything but.
As he turned back to you, Cyndy leaned in with a knowing smile, her voice low enough that only you could hear. âHeâs been so excited to bring you home. You shouldâve heard him talk about it.â
You blinked, caught off guard by the comment, your cheeks warming as her words sank in. âOh,â you managed, a little breathless.
Cyndyâs hand lingered on your arm for just a moment, her expression soft with unmistakable affection. âYouâll see,â she added with a wink, before stepping away to call to her husband about something in the kitchen.
When you turned back to Glen, he was watching you, his head tilted slightly. âWhat was that about?â he asked, his tone light but his curiosity clear.
âOh, nothing,â you said quickly, trying to wave it off. But you couldnât quite keep the smile from tugging at your lipsâor the slight flush from creeping up your neck.
Glenâs eyes narrowed playfully. âUh-huh. Sure.â He didnât push, though, instead gesturing for you to follow him. âCome on. Letâs grab something to drink before everyone starts peppering you with questions.â
The moment lingered as you followed him into the house, Cyndyâs words echoing in your mind. The idea of Glen talking about youâbeing excited to bring you hereâwas hard to shake. Maybe it was just his familyâs charm, or maybe it was something else entirely. Either way, you couldnât help the quiet smile that stayed on your face as Glen led the way.
* * * * *
With a steaming mug of cocoa warming your hands, you smiled politely as Glen's mom chatted animatedly about the Powell family Christmas traditions. You nodded along, but the flurry of introductions and the cozy chaos of his family had you feeling a little overwhelmed. Sensing your chance for a breather, you leaned toward Glen.
âExcuse me for a minute,â you murmured, setting your mug down on the counter.
He shot you a curious look but nodded, letting you slip away.
You wandered down the hall, grateful for the moment to collect yourself. After freshening up in the restroom, you made your way back toward the kitchen, but you stopped short as voices drifted toward you from the other side of the doorway.
â...sheâs adorable, Glen. Seriously,â one of his sistersâLauren, you thoughtâsaid with a teasing lilt.
âAnd you brought her home for Christmas?â Leslie chimed in, her voice lilting with mock surprise.
Glen groaned, and you could practically hear him rubbing his hand over his face. âGuys, come on. Weâre just friends.â
âRight,â Lauren said, drawing the word out like she didnât believe him for a second. âJust friends, and yet you insisted she come here instead of spending Christmas alone. Sounds like something a boyfriend would do, donât you think, Les?â
âDefinitely boyfriend behavior,â Leslie agreed, clearly enjoying herself.
âYou two are impossible,â Glen muttered, though his tone carried more amusement than frustration. âI didnât want her to spend the holidays alone, okay?â
Your breath caught at his words, warmth spreading through your chest.
âSure, sure,â Lauren said, her tone sly. âBut just so you know, Momâs already planning the wedding.â
Glen let out a sharp laugh. âThere isnât going to be a wedding. Letâs dial it back a little, huh? Sheâs nervous enough as it is without you two scaring her off.â
You took a step back, considering whether to linger a moment longer, but the sound of chairs scraping against the floor signaled that Glenâs sisters were on the move. Quickly, you stepped into the doorway, pretending you hadnât heard a thing.
âOh, there she is,â Leslie said with a grin as she and Lauren passed you.
Glen leaned back against the counter, arms crossed, his brow lifting as you stepped inside. âYou okay?â he asked, his voice soft and genuine.
You nodded, though your gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than you intended. âYeah, just needed a minute. Your familyâs really nice, by the way.â
A small smile tugged at his lips. âTheyâre a handful, but they mean well.â
You walked over to retrieve your cocoa, the rich chocolate aroma grounding you. âThey seem really excited to have everyone together.â
âYeah, itâs kind of their thing,â Glen said, watching you closely. âWhat about you? You hanging in there?â
You shrugged lightly, a small smile playing at your lips. âItâs a lot, but⌠in a good way. Itâs been a while since Iâve been around a big family like this.â
Glen straightened, stepping closer so his arm brushed against yours. âWell, they already love you.â
You laughed softly, shaking your head. His grin widened, but before he could say more, his momâs voice rang out from the living room, calling for him to help bring in the extra chairs for dinner.
He sighed dramatically, earning another laugh from you. âDuty calls,â he said, but his hand lightly touched your arm as he passed. âDonât let them rope you into anything too crazy while Iâm gone.â
You smiled, watching as he left the room. Something about being hereâwith himâfelt unexpectedly right.
* * * * *
The kitchen buzzed with activity as Glenâs mom and sisters dove into dinner preparations. The smell of roasted turkey and fresh-baked rolls filled the air, making your stomach rumble despite the cocoa youâd just finished. Cyndy was meticulously checking the oven temperature, while Lauren and Leslie were chopping vegetables at the kitchen island.
âNeed any help?â you asked hesitantly, stepping further into the room.
Lauren glanced up with a warm smile. âYouâre sweet to offer, but trust me, this kitchen is already at max capacity.â
âSpeak for yourself,â Leslie said, pointing her knife toward the pile of unpeeled carrots. âHere, grab a peeler. You can help me out before Mom has a meltdown over the timing.â
Cyndy turned from the oven, mock-offended. âI heard that!â
Leslie just smirked as she handed you a peeler and a couple of carrots. âIgnore her. She loves when we tease her. Keeps things interesting.â
You laughed softly and settled in next to Leslie, grateful for something to do with your hands.
âSo, how are you holding up?â Leslie asked after a moment, her voice quieter, more personal.
You glanced at her, surprised by the question. âOh, um⌠good, I think. Your familyâs been really welcoming.â
âWeâre loud, though,â Lauren chimed in, pausing her slicing to grin at you. âHopefully Glen warned you about that.â
âItâs a good kind of loud,â you said honestly, feeling more at ease with them. âIâm just⌠not used to it, I guess.â
Leslie nudged you lightly with her elbow. âWell, if you can survive the Powell family Christmas chaos, youâre pretty much invincible.â
âNoted,â you said with a laugh, peeling another carrot.
Lauren tilted her head, studying you curiously. âSo, how did you and Glen meet, anyway?â
You hesitated, glancing toward the doorway like Glen might walk in and save you. âWe met through mutual friends,â you said carefully. âItâs kind of a long story, but we just⌠clicked, I guess.â
Leslie smirked, clearly enjoying the topic. âClicked, huh? Like, just friends clicked? Or âmaybe thereâs something moreâ clicked?â
Heat rose to your cheeks, and you focused intently on the carrot in your hand. âDefinitely just friends,â you said quickly, your voice a little too firm.
âHmm,â Lauren said, exchanging a look with Leslie.
Before they could press further, Glen walked in, carrying a couple of folding chairs from the garage. He stopped short when he noticed the three of you huddled together.
âWhatâs going on in here?â he asked, his eyes narrowing suspiciously as he set the chairs against the wall.
âNothing,â Lauren said, her voice entirely too innocent.
Leslie shrugged. âJust getting to know your friend.â
Glen sighed, giving his sisters a pointed look before turning to you. âDonât let them gang up on you. Theyâre relentless once they get started.â
âI think Iâm holding my own,â you said with a small smile, though you were grateful for his presence.
âGood,â Glen said, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms. âBecause dinnerâs almost ready, and if they scare you off before dessert, Momâs going to kill them.â
The laughter that followed eased the lingering tension, and for the first time since youâd arrived, you felt like you were starting to find your footing amidst the whirlwind of the Powell family.
âAlright,â Cyndy said, clapping her hands together. âLetâs get everything to the table before it gets cold.â
The dining room table was a feast for the senses. Platters of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and roasted vegetables were arranged in the center, surrounded by bowls of cranberry sauce, rolls, and casseroles. Soft holiday music played in the background, and the warm glow of the chandelier added to the cozy atmosphere.
You found yourself seated between Glen and Lauren, while the twins took turns giggling and sneaking bites of their food despite their momâs warnings to âat least wait for everyone to get their plate.â
The conversation started casually, with everyone complimenting Cyndyâs cooking and trading jokes about who had eaten the most last Christmas. It wasnât long before the table was buzzing with overlapping chatter and bursts of laughter.
âSo, whatâs everyoneâs plans for New Yearâs?â Lauren asked as she helped her daughter cut her turkey into smaller pieces.
âWill and I are thinking of taking the kids to the park downtown for the fireworks,â Lauren said. âWhat about you, Glen?â
Glen shrugged, reaching for the mashed potatoes. âHavenât decided yet. Depends on if this oneâs dragging me somewhereâ He nudged your shoulder with a playful grin.
You laughed, shaking your head. âIâm not dragging you to anything. You keep inviting yourself to my plans.â
âSemantics,â he quipped, earning a chuckle from Leslie.
Cyndy, ever the gracious host, leaned toward you with a warm smile. âSo, what do you usually do for the holidays with your family?â
You hesitated for a moment, caught off guard by the question. âWell, when I can make it home, we usually have a quiet Christmas. Just my parents and my siblings. Lots of food, games, and, uh, my momâs famous fudge.â
âThat sounds lovely,â Cyndy said, her tone genuine. âYouâll have to share the fudge recipe sometime. Maybe weâll add it to our dessert rotation next year.â
âIâd love to,â you said, feeling a little more at ease.
Throughout dinner, Glen made sure to keep you involved in the conversation, throwing in lighthearted jokes and even sharing an embarrassing story from high school that had everyone in stitches.
âRemember when Glen tried to sing karaoke at the Christmas talent show?â Leslie said, her face lighting up with glee.
âOh, no,â Glen groaned, burying his face in his hands.
Lauren jumped in. âHe thought he could hit the high notes in âAll I Want for Christmas Is You.â Spoiler alert: he couldnât.â
The table erupted in laughter, and even you couldnât hold back a giggle. Glen peeked at you through his fingers, feigning betrayal.
âSorry,â you said between laughs. âBut I need to hear this someday.â
âNot happening,â Glen said firmly, shaking his head.
By the time dessert was servedâa towering plate of Cyndyâs homemade pecan pieâyou were full, content, and starting to see why Glen loved spending the holidays here so much.
After dinner, the energy in the house began to settle. The twins had all but fallen asleep at the table, and Lauren and her husband said their goodbyes, bundling their sleepy children into coats before heading out for the night.
âIâll see you both tomorrow,â Lauren said, pulling you into a warm hug. âYou did great tonight. Donât let these guys scare you off.â She winked, glancing briefly at Glen.
With the house quieter, you, Glen, and Leslie remained behind to spend a little more time with his parents. Cyndy brought out another round of cocoa, insisting on adding an extra dollop of whipped cream for everyone.
The fire in the living room had burned low, but Glen Sr. stoked it back to life, filling the room with a warm glow. You took a seat on the couch near the hearth, your fingers curling around the mug of cocoa as you soaked in the comforting crackle of the flames.
The warmth of the fire helped, but the Texas winter chill still lingered, and you found yourself shivering slightly as you sipped your drink.
Glen, sitting in an armchair nearby, noticed immediately. Without a word, he stood and grabbed a thick, soft blanket draped over the back of the couch. Crossing the room, he carefully draped it over your shoulders, his hands lingering for a moment to ensure it was snug around you.
âBetter?â he asked softly, his voice low enough that only you could hear.
You nodded, your heart warming at the small, thoughtful gesture. âMuch better. Thank you.â
Instead of returning to his chair, Glen sat down beside you on the couch, the corner of the blanket brushing against his arm as he stretched out. The closeness was both comforting and a little distracting, the ease of his presence pulling you further into the moment.
Across the room, Cyndy and Glen Sr. shared a knowing look, their quiet conversation halting as they observed the two of you. Leslie, seated in the armchair Glen had vacated, leaned over to whisper something to her mom, her expression amused.
Glen Sr. gave a subtle shake of his head, murmuring something you couldnât quite catch, though his tone held a hint of playful exasperation.
The whispers and exchanged glances didnât go unnoticed by Glen, who shot his sister a pointed look. âYou guys good over there?â he asked, raising an eyebrow.
âTotally,â Leslie replied, a little too quickly, her smile innocent in a way that wasnât fooling anyone. âJust enjoying the show.â
You glanced between them, confused. âWhat show?â
âNothing!â Cyndy said quickly, her tone light but clearly trying to steer the conversation away. âItâs just nice to see Glen bringing a friend home for the holidays.â
You felt your cheeks warm under her gaze, and Glen let out a small sigh, clearly used to his familyâs antics.
âAlright, thatâs enough,â he said, though his tone was more amused than annoyed.
Leslie smirked but didnât push further, and Cyndy changed the subject to talk about the Powell familyâs Christmas morning traditions.
The room was dimly lit, the fire crackling softly in the background. The evening had settle dinto a quiet calm, with Glen sitting on the couch, his arm stretched across the backrest. Despite your best efforts to stay engaged in the chatter between Glen and his family, your eyelids grew heavier with each passing moment.
Cyndy and Leslie paused mid conversation when they noticed you were asleep. Your breathing was slow and even, your head nestled against Glen like it was the most natural thing in the world. Cyndy and Leslie exchanged a look, both already grinning.
âSheâs so sweet,â Cyndy whispered, her voice barely above the crackling of the fire.
âAnd youâre adorable together,â Leslie added, leaning closer to her mom as if she were sharing a juicy secret.
Glenâs eyes flicked toward them, his lips tugging into a faint, knowing smirk. âWeâre just friends,â he said, keeping his voice low to avoid disturbing you.
Leslie arched a brow. âSure, you are,â she teased, crossing her arms. âBecause friends totally look at each other like that.â
âWhat are you even talking about?â Glen asked, rolling his eyes, though his free hand instinctively adjusted the blanket draped over you, tucking it more securely around your shoulders. You stirred slightly, leaning into him more, and his arm moved without hesitation, wrapping lightly around you to keep you comfortable.
âLike that,â Leslie said pointedly, gesturing at him with a playful smirk.
Cyndyâs eyes were full of warmth as she added, âLeslieâs right, honey. Itâs the way you look at her. Like sheâs the only person in the room.â
Glen sighed, running a hand through your hair but careful not to jostle you. âIâve thought about it,â he admitted softly, his gaze dropping to you as you slept peacefully against him. âProbably more than I should have.â
Leslieâs teasing grin shifted into genuine curiosity. âSo whatâs stopping you?â
âItâs not the right time,â Glen said, his voice low but thoughtful. âMy scheduleâs insane. The next six to eight months are booked solid with filming, press tours⌠Iâd barely be around. Starting something with her when I know I donât have the time to make it work or for it to be healthy? It doesnât feel fair to her. Or to me.â
Cyndy tilted her head, her brows furrowed slightly. âBut youâve managed to keep your friendship going despite all that. You both make time for each other. If you were dating, it wouldnât be that much different, would it?â
Leslie chimed in, âExactly. Youâve already proven that you make her a priority, even with everything youâve got going on. If you really like herâand itâs obvious you doâwhy not take the chance?â
Glen glanced down at you again, the flickering firelight casting a warm glow across your peaceful face. His arm tightened just slightly around you, as if the thought of letting you go, even metaphorically, was too hard to bear.
He didnât respond right away, the weight of his familyâs words settling in as he watched you. Maybe they had a point. But taking that leap still felt like a mountain he wasnât sure he could climbâat least not yet.
âIâll think about it,â he said finally, his voice soft and a little distant.
Leslie opened her mouth, ready to press him further, but Cyndy gave her a gentle nudge and a pointed look. âLet it go, Leslie,â she said quietly. âHeâll figure it out when heâs ready.â
As they turned to leave the room, Cyndy glanced back at Glen one more time, her expression full of motherly understanding. Glen caught her look, gave her a small, grateful nod, and then shifted slightly to settle more comfortably against the couch, his arm still securely around you.
For now, he decided, this moment was enough.
The warmth of the fire flickered softly, casting golden light across the room. Between the gentle crackle of the logs and the soothing rhythm of your breathing, Glen found himself starting to relax in a way he hadnât in weeks. Your head rested against his shoulder, and the weight of it, combined with the soft rise and fall of your chest, brought an unexpected sense of peace.
Glen shifted slightly, careful not to disturb you, but the movement only made you nestle closer, your arm brushing against his. He glanced down at you, a small smile tugging at his lips. The firelight danced in his eyes as his mind wandered, replaying his mom and Leslieâs words.
Sheâs sweet.
Youâre adorable together.
Whatâs stopping you?
His gaze lingered on you, and a soft sigh escaped him. He knew what they meant. Knew how easy it would be to let himself fall. Maybe he already had.
The fire crackled again, pulling him from his thoughts. The room was growing quieter, the warmth enveloping him like a cocoon. His head tilted back slightly, his eyes growing heavier with each passing moment. Despite his best efforts to stay awake, the comfort of the moment proved too much.
It wasnât long before Glenâs breathing matched yours, slow and steady, his chin dipping slightly toward his chest as sleep overtook him. The two of you sat there, heads close, his arm still loosely draped around you while the blanket kept you both warm.
Some time later, Cyndy padded softly into the living room, a smile spreading across her face as she took in the scene. You were still tucked against Glen, your hand now resting lightly against his chest. Glenâs head leaned toward yours, his features relaxed in a way only sleep could bring.
Cyndy stood there for a moment, her heart warming at the sight. She grabbed another blanket from the linen closet and approached quietly, careful not to wake either of you. With practiced ease, she draped it gently over both of you, tucking it around your shoulders before stepping back.
She turned to the fireplace, stoking the remaining embers and making sure it was safely extinguished. The room dimmed as she turned off the lights, leaving only the soft glow of the moon filtering through the curtains.
Before heading to bed, she paused once more, her gaze softening as she looked back at the two of you. A small, knowing smile played on her lips as she shook her head lightly, then whispered to herself, âJust friends, huh?â
With that, she turned and left the room, leaving you and Glen to rest peacefully in the quiet glow of the night.
*****
The soft light of morning filtered through the curtains, casting a faint glow across the living room. Glen stirred, his body shifting slightly against the couch cushion as he blinked groggily, trying to orient himself. His eyes felt heavy, and for a moment, he couldnât figure out why he felt so warm.
He shifted again, feeling somethingâor rather, someoneâpressed against him. He froze, his heart skipping a beat as he realized he wasnât alone.
Looking down, he saw you curled into his side, your front pressed snugly against his chest, your legs tangled with his. One blanket was wrapped around you, tucked in as though youâd done it instinctively, and anotherâone he didnât even remember grabbingâcovered both of you. His arm was draped protectively around you, his hand resting lightly against your back.
Your breath was warm against his neck, soft and even, and he could feel the steady rhythm of your heartbeat where your chest touched his. The realization sent a jolt of awareness through him. How had this happened? The last thing he remembered was sitting upright, with you asleep on his shoulder.
He let his head fall back onto the couch for a moment, exhaling slowly as he tried to make sense of it. Well, this is... comfortable, he thought wryly, though he couldnât deny the quiet peace that came with waking up next to you.
As his brain started to wake up, he rubbed at his eyes, his other arm instinctively tightening around you as you shifted slightly in your sleep, murmuring something he couldnât quite make out.
The sound of soft footsteps made him glance toward the archway leading to the kitchen. His parents stood there, his mom holding a coffee mug while his dad held the morning paper.
Cyndy stopped mid-step when she saw the two of you, her lips curling into a knowing smile she didnât even try to hide. Glen groaned quietly, his free hand coming up to rub at the back of his neck as he looked up at them.
His dad raised an eyebrow, folding his arms across his chest as a smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. âWell, good morning,â his dad said, his tone amused. âSleep well, son?â
Cyndy swatted his dad lightly on the arm but didnât say anything, her smile widening as she looked between Glen and you.
Glen cleared his throat, his voice low and rough from sleep. âMorning,â he muttered, trying not to move too much and wake you.
Cyndy stepped closer, lowering her voice. âYou looked so peaceful last night. I didnât have the heart to wake you,â she said, her gaze warm and teasing.
Glen gave her a look, half-exasperated and half-grateful. âThanks, Mom,â he murmured dryly, though there was no heat in his words.
âYou should probably wake her before the others come down,â his dad added with a chuckle, nodding toward the stairs. âDonât want to give Leslie too much ammunition.â
Glen sighed, his eyes flicking back to you. You were still sound asleep, your face relaxed and peaceful against him. His dad wasnât wrongâLeslie would have a field day if she saw this.
âYeah, Iâll handle it,â he said quietly, shifting slightly to try and rouse you without startling you.
Cyndy leaned closer to her husband as they turned to head back to the kitchen, her voice just loud enough for Glen to catch. âI think theyâre adorable,â she whispered.
Glen groaned again, though he couldnât quite hide the small smile tugging at his lips as he looked down at you, still nestled against him.
Glen sighed softly and glanced down at you, his heart doing an odd little flip at the sight of you so peaceful against him. For a moment, he hesitated, not wanting to disturb you. You looked so content, your face relaxed and framed by a strand of hair that had fallen loose.
But his dad was rightâhe needed to wake you before anyone else saw this and started making jokes heâd never live down.
âHey,â he murmured, his voice low and gentle. He shifted slightly, his hand moving to lightly brush against your shoulder. âTime to wake up.â
You stirred faintly but didnât open your eyes, your brows furrowing as you shifted closer, burying your face into the crook of his neck. The movement sent a wave of warmth rushing through him, and for a split second, he froze, unsure how to handle the sudden closeness.
âCome on,â he tried again, his voice soft and laced with a hint of amusement now. âYouâre going to miss breakfast.â
This time, you let out a soft hum of protest, your voice barely audible as you mumbled, âFive more minutes...â
Glen couldnât help but chuckle, the sound rumbling through his chest. âCome on, you need to wake up before the others come downstairs.â
Your eyes fluttered open at the sound of his voice, and it took you a moment to register where you were. When you finally looked up at him, still half-asleep, your cheeks flushed as the realization hit.
âOh,â you said softly, your voice hoarse with sleep. âSorry, I didnât mean to...â
âDonât worry about it,â Glen cut in quickly, his tone reassuring.
Your eyes dropped to where his arm was still draped around you, and you slowly began to sit up, the blanket falling away as you shifted. Glen helped, his hand steadying you as you moved, though he couldnât quite hide the slight reluctance he felt at the loss of warmth.
âI, uh... hope I wasnât too heavy,â you said, brushing a hand through your hair as you tried to smooth it down.
Glen smirked, leaning back against the couch. âYouâre fine. But you do steal blankets, apparently,â he teased, motioning to the second blanket draped over him.
You blinked, confused, then looked down at the blanket and frowned. âWait, where did that even come from?â
âMom,â he said simply, the corners of his mouth tugging upward. âShe came in last night and covered us up. I think she wanted to make sure we didnât freeze to death.â
Your cheeks reddened further, and you groaned softly, hiding your face in your hands. âOh, great. So your mom saw us like that?â
âDonât worry,â he said, reaching out to tug your hands away from your face, his smile softening. âShe thought it was cute. So did Dad, for the record.â
âWonderful,â you muttered, though there was a hint of a smile tugging at your lips now.
Glen watched you for a moment before standing and stretching, his hand running through his hair as he glanced toward the kitchen. âCome on,â he said, offering you a hand. âLetâs get some coffee before Leslie sees us and decides to turn this into a running joke for the next decade.â
You laughed softly, taking his hand as he pulled you to your feet. His touch lingered for just a second longer than necessary before he let go, his gaze flicking to yours briefly before he led the way toward the kitchen.
As you and Glen walked into the kitchen, the rich scent of freshly brewed coffee hit you, immediately comforting in the way that only mornings at someone else's home could be. His parents were already seated at the island, sipping their own coffee, looking up with warm smiles as you entered.
âGood morning, you two,â his dad, Glen Sr., greeted with a grin, his voice low and warm.
âMorning,â you replied softly, moving to grab a mug from the cabinet. Glenâs mom, Cyndy, shot you a look, an almost mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
âDid you sleep well?â she asked, her voice friendly, yet filled with a knowing edge.
You nodded, your face flushing again as you took a seat next to Glen. âYeah, I did. Thanks for the extra blanket.â
âOf course,â she said with a smile. âI couldnât have you freezing to death in here.â She paused, her eyes flicking between you and Glen for a moment. âThough, I must say, it was nice to see you both so cozy last night.â
Glen let out an exaggerated groan, shaking his head. âMom, please.â
You chuckled softly, looking over at him, your hand wrapped around your mug of coffee. âItâs fine,â you said, offering a reassuring smile. âNo harm done.â
His dad chuckled, clearly enjoying the moment. âYouâre lucky. I donât see Glen like that much.â
âI bet,â you responded, teasing, taking a sip of your coffee. âI wouldnât have guessed heâs such a softy.â
âOh, you have no idea,â Cyndy said with a wink, earning a playful nudge from her husband.
Glen rolled his eyes, then leaned back against the counter, his eyes flicking to you. âSo, I was thinking we should head back to my place in a bit,â he said, casually stirring his coffee. âWeâll change clothes, then Iâll bring you back here. Sound good?â
You nodded, sipping your coffee again, grateful for the warmth in your hands. âThat sounds perfect.â
Leslie walked in at that moment, still wearing her pajamas, her eyes narrowing in on you and Glen still in the clothes you had on yesterday. âDid you guys sleep here last night?â
Glen groaned again, clearly not ready for another round of teasing. âLeslie, please, not now.â
But Leslie was already grinning, turning to their parents. âThey fell asleep and slept on the couch, didnât they?â
âMind your own business,â Glen said, his voice half-amused, half-annoyed, as he stood up from the counter. He shot a glance at you, his expression softening. âAlright, letâs go grab some things from my place.
As you and Glen walked toward the door, you could hear Leslie's voice rise from the kitchen, her tone laced with playful teasing.
"I mean, itâs so obvious," she said, her voice carrying easily to where you both were standing.
"I heard that, Leslie!" he called out, his voice a mix of annoyance and amusement. "Knock it off."
Leslieâs laugh echoed from the kitchen, followed by a muffled comment you couldnât quite make out, though you were sure it was another jab at him.
Glen rolled his eyes and shook his head, but there was a softness to his expression when he looked at you. "Sorry about that," he said, his tone light. "Sheâs relentless."
You couldnât help but smile, feeling a warmth in your chest at how natural this all felt. "Itâs fine," you said, chuckling.
He held the door open for you, letting you step out first, his hand brushing against yours as you passed. The drive back to his place was quiet at first, the hum of the engine and the soft sounds of music on the radio filling the space between you. You found yourself glancing out the window, watching the suburbs of Austin pass by as the sun began to rise higher, casting a golden glow over everything.
Glenâs hand rested casually on the steering wheel, his fingers tapping lightly in rhythm with the beat of the song. Every now and then, heâd sneak a glance at you, a slight smile curling on his lips as if something was playing in his mind. You caught him once or twice, but neither of you said much, content to simply exist in the quiet comfort of each otherâs company.
Finally, as you turned onto the street leading to his place, Glen broke the silence, his voice low but warm.
âSo, what do you think?â he asked, glancing over at you, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. âYouâre not regretting agreeing to spend the holidays with my family, are you?â
You smiled, shaking your head. âNot at all. Itâs been⌠nice. Really nice, actually.â
He gave a small, satisfied nod, then pulled into the driveway of his house. As he parked, you both sat there for a moment, the truck gently rocking as the engine turned off.
As you both entered the house, the familiar warmth wrapped around you, making you feel at ease. Glen led the way toward the stairs, his movements easy, casualâlike nothing had changed. But you couldn't ignore the shift, the quiet tension that seemed to have settled between you after spending the night curled up together. It wasnât awkward, not exactly, but it was different. You both seemed a little more aware of each other than before.
"Bathroom's upstairs," Glen said, breaking the silence as he gestured to the staircase. "You can use the guest bathroom, and I'll take the one in my room."
You nodded, following him up the stairs. The house was quiet now, the early morning stillness hanging in the air. When you reached the top, you stopped briefly in front of the guest room. Glen was a few steps ahead of you, but you caught the way his gaze flickered to you for just a moment. His eyes lingered, and you felt the weight of itâthe subtle shift youâd both sensed. He quickly looked away, his lips curling into a casual smile, but it wasnât the same as before. There was something unspoken now, something you couldnât quite name.
"Alright," Glen said, his voice a little softer than usual. "Iâll meet you downstairs in a bit. Take your time."
You hesitated for a second, feeling the strange pull between you, but nodded and stepped into the guest room. The door clicked shut behind you, and for a moment, you just stood there, the silence pressing in. It wasnât uncomfortableâjust different. You couldnât help but wonder if he felt it too, that quiet shift in the air, the one that had somehow made the space between you seem just a little smaller.
You shook your head, trying to push away the sudden thoughts swirling in your mind. This was still Glenâyour friend. Nothing had changed, right?
But as you started to get ready for your shower, you couldnât shake the feeling that something had.
The hot water helped clear your head, and you focused on the simple task of washing off the sleep from your body. The shower was quick, just a few minutes of cleansing and letting the steam fill the space, but you didnât want to take too long. Glen was probably already waiting, and you didnât want to leave him hanging. You turned off the water, stepping out and grabbing the towel from the hook.
As you dried off, you realized your mistake. Your clothes were still in the guest room, neatly folded on the bed. You hadnât thought that far ahead, assuming youâd just grab them when you finished. You sighed quietly to yourself, wrapping the towel securely around you, careful not to let it slip.
You checked yourself in the mirror for a moment, making sure everything was in place. Satisfied, you opened the bathroom door and stepped out into the hallway, glancing toward the guest room. It felt strange walking across the house like thisâtowel-clad, with nothing but the soft padding of your bare feet on the floor to accompany you.
You moved as quickly as you could, trying not to draw attention to yourself, but the slight breeze of the air made you acutely aware of just how vulnerable you felt in the moment. When you reached the guest room, you took a quick glance down the hallway, just in case, before slipping inside and closing the door behind you.
You quickly pulled on the clothes you had set out, opting for something comfortable but still presentable. After slipping on a soft sweater and a pair of jeans, you grabbed the brush and ran it through your damp hair. You added a little product, hoping it would hold up for the day, but you didnât want to stress too much about it. After all, you were just heading downstairs with Glenânothing too formal.
You took a deep breath and made your way toward the door, hoping the day would continue as smoothly as possible. But as you stepped out of the guest room, you nearly collided with Glen. He was just emerging from his room, his shirt still in his hand, his chest and abs exposed in the moment before he pulled it on. His muscles were defined, his skin still warm from the shower, and you found your gaze involuntarily drifting down for just a moment.
You quickly snapped your eyes away, trying to ignore the rush of heat that flushed your face. You gave a nervous smile, your heart thudding in your chest, and practically rushed past him. Your steps were quick, almost too quick as you hurried down the stairs, praying to some higher power that Glen hadnât noticed your lingering glance.
The sound of his footsteps following behind you reassured you that he wasnât focusing on the moment. You let out a quiet breath, hoping you could push the moment from your mind and keep everything normal.
"So, what do you think? Want to hang out here for a bit? Enjoy the quiet before we head back to the chaos?" he asked, his voice casual, but there was an unspoken invitation in his words.
You glanced toward the living room. The cozy, inviting space was practically calling out to you. The thought of staying here, just the two of you, no teasing, no distractions. The idea of getting alone time with Glen was tempting.
But as you stood there, a tug of guilt gnawed at you. You could already picture Glen, laughing and joking with his family, enjoying moments that he didnât get to have often due to his hectic schedule. He didnât get much time with them, and you knew that all too well. The last thing you wanted to do was take him away from that, especially when you knew how much he cherished it.
You had more time with him than they did. You saw him regularly, had long conversations over coffee, shared lazy afternoons together on his days off. They were lucky to have him home, and you didnât want to be the reason he missed out on these rare moments.
The thought of staying here, just the two of you, was appealing, yesâbut not at the expense of his family. You didnât want to be selfish. They didnât have the luxury of seeing him every day, and you knew that if you stayed, it would be taking away from that time they had.
Finally, you shook your head slightly, offering him a small, apologetic smile. "I think Iâd rather head back over," you said, trying to push aside the selfish urge to keep him all to yourself. "You donât get to see them much, and I donât want to take that away from you." With a final glance at the quiet room around you, you gave Glen a small smile. "Shall we?" you asked, your voice light, trying to push the lingering tension aside.
He nodded, his smile softening, understanding exactly what you meant. "Yeah, letâs go."
As you followed him to the door, the weight of the quiet moments you shared earlier in the day seemed to hang in the air, but there was something comforting in it. A subtle shift, one you couldnât quite put your finger on but couldnât ignore either.
The cool air greeted you as you stepped outside, and the drive back to his parents' house was peaceful, the car filled only with the sound of the engine and the faint rustling of the wind. You both had your own thoughts, but the comfortable silence made it feel like there was no need to fill the space.
When you pulled up to the house again, the familiar warmth of the lights shining from the windows seemed inviting. Glen turned to you before you opened the door, his gaze lingering a little longer than usual. "Thanks for letting me have so much time with them" he said quietly, his voice sincere. "I appreciate you understanding."
You smiled at him, a quiet understanding between you that didnât need words. "Of course, I know how important they are to you," you replied, giving him a look that was just as much reassurance as it was a soft acknowledgment of the unspoken bond you shared. And with that, the two of you stepped out of the car, ready to head back inside, where the sounds of family laughter awaited.
* * * * *
The warm scent of cookies filled the kitchen as you worked alongside Cyndy, Lauren, and Leslie, mixing dough and rolling it into perfect little balls. The rhythm of your hands, the soft scrape of the spatula against the bowl, was comforting. The kitchen was a cozy flurry of flour, sugar, and laughter.
As you moved the dough onto the baking sheets, the sounds of laughter echoed from the living room. Glenâs voice was unmistakable, full of warmth and joy, accompanied by the high-pitched giggles of the twins. You couldnât help but smile, a soft chuckle escaping you as you glanced up.
âSeems like heâs a fun uncle,â you commented, rolling the dough into another ball.
Cyndy and Leslie shared a knowing look before Leslie grinned. "Oh, heâs the favorite uncle, hands down," she said, shaking her head with a teasing smile. âI mean, heâs practically a big kid himself when theyâre around.â
You laughed, imagining Glenâs easygoing nature blending perfectly with the chaos and energy of his niece and nephew. It was clear that they adored him.
Lauren continued, her tone light and affectionate. âI think the twins might actually think of him as their second dad sometimes. He spoils them rotten."
After a few moments, Glen appeared in the doorway, slightly out of breath but grinning from ear to ear, his hair a bit messy from wrestling with the twins. His cheeks were flushed from the fun, but as soon as his eyes found the cooling rack of freshly baked cookies, he couldnât resist. He made his way toward it, trying to sneak a cookie without anyone noticing.
You raised an eyebrow, a playful smile tugging at your lips as you saw his move. You grabbed the spatula from the counter and, with a quick swipe, playfully swatted at him.
âDonât even think about it,â you teased, but before you could even get close, Glenâs hand shot out to grab your wrist, stopping the spatula mid-air.
He chuckled, his grip gentle but firm, his fingers brushing against your skin in the briefest of moments. His gaze locked with yours, and for a second, the playful banter seemed to fade as the space between you both felt charged with something a little different.
âReally?â Glen raised an eyebrow, his voice soft with amusement.
You laughed, trying to pull your wrist free, but his hand stayed in place, still holding you with a steady but warm grip. âThey arenât ready yet,â you said, laughing as you tried to wiggle out of his grasp.
The laughter from Cyndy and Leslie behind you broke the moment, and you both turned, noticing their amused expressions.
âAre we interrupting something?â Cyndy asked with a teasing smile.
Leslie, barely containing a grin, raised an eyebrow. âYou two are really cute together, you know that?â
You shot her a playful glare, but Glen gave a sheepish chuckle, releasing your wrist and straightening up. âWe're just friends,â he said with a lighthearted shrug, though the hint of something unspoken lingered in his tone. âBut I am taking one of these cookies.â
Before you could respond, Glen grabbed a cookie from the cooling rack with a victorious grin. You rolled your eyes in mock exasperation as he happily bit into the cookie, clearly pleased with himself.
âYouâre lucky I like you,â you said, shaking your head with a smile.
Cyndy and Leslie exchanged a knowing glance, but neither said anything else, letting the moment hang in the air between you two, filled with warmth and an undeniable connection.
Lauren gave Glen a mischievous grin and, without warning, tossed a small pinch of flour in his direction. The flour puffed up in the air, and Glen let out a surprised laugh, his hands immediately going to his hair and face to brush it away.
âHey!â Glen laughed, glancing around at the chaos unfolding. âYouâre going down for that!â
In an instant, the flour fight was on. Leslie, quick on the draw, took the opportunity to sprinkle flour over Glenâs shoulder. He retaliated with a handful of flour that he flung in her direction, his aim slightly off, hitting the edge of the counter instead. You couldn't help but laugh, your hands covered in flour as you tried to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.
Glen shot you a playful look, and before you could duck out of his reach, he tossed a small pinch of flour at you. It landed right on your nose, and you gasped in mock horror.
âOh, it's on now,â you said, wiping at your nose. âYouâre going to pay for that one.â
The kitchen erupted in more laughter as flour and frosting flew between the family members, and before long, the "fight" ended just as quickly as it started, with everyone covered in flour and sugar but still grinning from ear to ear.
You went to wipe the frosting off your cheek, but as your finger brushed over it, you only seemed to smear it further. Glen, watching you with a teasing smile, leaned in slightly, his gaze softening as he shook his head. âYouâre just making it worse.â
You raised an eyebrow. âOh, really? Got a better idea?â
He didnât say anything at first, just reached for the kitchen towel. His fingers brushed against your chin as he gently took your face in his hands, tilting your head slightly to get a better angle. His thumb carefully wiped away the frosting from your cheek, and you held your breath, caught in the moment, his touch gentle and thoughtful.
âThere,â Glen said softly, his eyes still focused on your face. âAll better.â
You met his gaze for a moment, feeling something stir inside you. His hand lingered just a little longer than necessary before he dropped it to his side, giving you a sheepish smile.
Glenâs mom, Cyndy, appeared in the doorway, holding a broom in one hand and a Swiffer in the other. She surveyed the flour-coated kitchen with an amused smile, shaking her head at the mess.
âStart cleaning this up, Glen,â she said with a grin, holding out the broom to him.
Glen, still wiping frosting from his hands, gave her a mock salute. âYes maâam,â he replied, his voice teasing as he took the broom from her with a sigh.
Cyndy smiled and turned back to the counter, the familiar, easy banter filling the air. âI swear, uou start a food fight every time we bake cookies around here.â
âHey, I didnât start it. I was just defending myself,â Glen shot back, sweeping a pile of flour into the dustpan with care.
You glanced over at Glen, a grin tugging at your lips. It was hard not to notice how much he resembled his mom in that momentâeasygoing, playful, and always the one tasked with cleaning up after the fun.
âDonât look so smug, youâve got your own work to do,â he teased, gesturing at the counter where the remaining cookie dough sat ready to be rolled.
You just laughed and walked over to help Cyndy and Leslie, trying to distract yourself from the small, fleeting moment youâd just shared with Glen.
The kitchen felt warm with laughter and good company as you all continued to work together, and for a moment, everything seemed perfectly in place. Glen was hard at work, and you were right where you wanted to beâwith the people who mattered most to him, helping make new memories.
After the cookies were finished and the kitchen was tidied up, the festive energy of the day shifted to the living room, where the Christmas tree stood, waiting to be transformed. Glenâs mom, Cyndy, had made it clearâno tree decorating until everyone, including Glen was home. So, even though Christmas Eve had arrived, the tree still sat untouched, its branches bare, twinkling lights tangled in a mess of cords.
You and Glen made your way to the storage tote, ready to tackle the daunting task of untangling the lights. Glen grinned as he opened the lid, revealing the well-loved decorations inside. "Every year, this takes longer than it should," he muttered, already pulling out a jumble of strings.
"At least youâre here to help now," you teased, grabbing a section of lights and trying to work through the knots. "Iâm sure your family appreciates that."
Glen shot you a playful look as he started to untangle his own section. "Yeah, yeah, they know Iâm the official light untangler. No one else can be trusted with this responsibility."
You both worked together, your laughter and conversation mixing with the sounds of his sisters in the living room. Cyndy and Leslie were busy sorting through the assortment of ornaments, laying them out in neat piles to be hung on the tree. The occasional clink of glass and soft chatter filled the space as they talked about the best places to hang each ornament.
The mood was lighthearted, and there was a cozy comfort in the room as the tree slowly started to take shape. You glanced over at Glen, catching the familiar glint of mischief in his eyes as he struggled with a particularly stubborn knot.
"Need help there?" you asked with a smirk, leaning closer.
"Nope, Iâve got it," he replied, his voice teasing but also faintly apologetic. "Iâm a professional at this by now."
As he worked on the tangled mess, you couldnât help but notice how the sight of himâfocused and determined, yet still making light of the situationâmade your heart flutter in a way that was different from before. You shook it off quickly, telling yourself it was just the holiday spirit getting to you.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of struggling with knots and wires, the lights were untangled. You plugged them in to make sure they worked, and sure enough, the tree lit up with a soft glow, casting a warm, comforting light on the room.
Cyndy clapped her hands together with excitement. "Alright, now the fun part! Everyone grab an ornament, letâs make this tree sparkle."
Glenâs sisters eagerly began pulling their favorite ornaments from the piles, each one carefully examined before being placed on the branches. Glen handed you an ornament with a small grin. "I think this oneâs for you," he said, handing you a glass star ornament that had a delicate silver shimmer.
As the tree filled with decorations, you couldnât help but feel the warmth of the moment. It was peaceful and festive, and even with the occasional playful jab from one of Glenâs sisters, you couldnât deny that it felt right.
Glen stepped back for a moment, surveying the tree as the last few ornaments were added. He gave you a soft smile, and you both exchanged a quiet moment before returning to finish the final touches.
As the final ornaments were being placed, the room seemed to hum with festive energy. The tree was almost done, with the soft glow of the lights reflecting off the glass baubles and tinsel. You stepped back to admire the view when Cyndy, holding the delicate star topper, made her way toward you.
"Here," she said with a warm smile, holding it out to you. "I think you should be the one to put the star on top. After all, you're the special guest this year."
You immediately felt a slight panic. "Oh, no, no, someone in the family should do it," you said, shaking your head, trying to pass the ornament back to her. "This is your tradition."
But Cyndy, always insistent, simply raised an eyebrow and gave you a playful smile. "Youâre part of the family now," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument.Â
Before you could protest any further, Cyndy shot a glance over at Glen, who was leaning casually against the wall, watching with a smile. "Glen, help her up."
Glenâs eyes twinkled mischievously as he moved toward you. "You heard her," he teased, holding out a hand. "Up you go."
You gave him an incredulous look, but there was no backing out now. Glen bent down slightly, motioning for you to climb onto his shoulders. With a deep breath, you carefully moved onto his broad shoulders. Glen straightened up, your legs now on either side of his neck, and you were perched on his shoulders, a little wobbly at first, but he steadied you easily.
"Alright, ready?" he asked, his voice close to your ear, making you feel a little more unsteady than you had been just moments ago.
You nodded, and Glen slowly straightened his back, lifting you higher so you could reach the top of the tree.
With his support, you leaned over carefully, stretching just enough to place the star on top of the tree. You could feel his arms beneath your legs, his grip steady as he held you in place. As you aligned the cord with the top strand of lights, the star clicked into place, and the top of the tree lit up with a soft, radiant glow.
The room seemed to pause for a moment, everyone looking up at the tree as the star twinkled brightly, casting a warm glow over the entire room. You couldnât help but smile, feeling a sense of pride and contentment as you admired the result.
"Perfect," Cyndy said, her voice filled with approval. "Itâs beautiful."
As Glen slowly lowered you back to the ground, his hands slid to your waist, steadying you as you regained your footing. You both stood there for a moment, a shared silence settling over you as you looked up at the tree. The lights glowed softly, casting a gentle warmth over the room, and the star at the top shone brilliantly.
The atmosphere was calm, peaceful. You couldnât help but feel a small flutter in your chest as you stood close to Glen, the warmth of his hands still lingering on your hips. It wasnât anything overt, just a quiet moment where the connection between the two of you felt more real than ever. The world around you seemed to fade away for a second, leaving only the soft hum of the Christmas tree lights and the quiet of the room.
You both stood there for what felt like an eternity, neither of you saying a word. The only sounds were the soft crackle of the fire in the background and the distant laughter from the others. And then, without warning, Glen seemed to notice the looks from the corner of his eye. Leslie and Lauren were standing at the other side of the room, their eyes fixed on the two of you, their smiles too knowing for Glenâs liking.
Caught in the moment, Glen quickly pulled his hands from your sides, his fingers brushing against your skin just enough to send a small shiver down your spine. He cleared his throat and turned toward the others, trying to act nonchalant.
âAlright, alright,â he said, chuckling awkwardly.
Leslie grinned and gave him a playful wink, but it was Laurenâs knowing smile that lingered in your mind. You and Glen shared a fleeting glance before you both turned to rejoin the others, the moment still hanging between you two.
* * * * *
Later that evening, after the lively chaos of dinner had settled, you found yourself stepping out onto the deck of Glenâs house. The crisp air of the winter evening wrapped around you as you leaned against the railing, a cup of warm tea cradled in your hands. The steam curled up into the cool night, and the soft hum of the distant streetlights was the only sound you could hear. It was a peaceful contrast to the laughter and chatter that had filled the house earlier, and you welcomed the solitude.
As you sipped from your cup, your thoughts drifted back to the nightâs events. Glenâs family had been warm and welcoming, and though you could see how much they all cared for him, you couldnât help but notice the way Cyndy had spoken earlier. It lingered in your mind, that softness in her eyes when she spoke of how much happier Glen seemed since you arrived. It made your chest feel tight, both in a comforting and nerve-wracking way.
The door behind you creaked open, and you turned just as Glen stepped onto the deck. He moved toward you with that familiar easy stride of his, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket. For a moment, he stood beside you, silent, just taking in the night air with you. The way the soft glow of the house lights reflected off his features made him seem almost impossibly handsome in the moment.
âYou okay?â he asked, his voice low and gentle, as if he knew that his familyâs energy could be overwhelming at times. âI know they can be a lot.â
You offered him a soft smile and took another sip of tea, the warmth of the cup soothing against your palms. âIâm enjoying myself, really,â you assured him. âYour familyâs great. Itâs just... nice to have a little peace and quiet for a moment after everything today, you know?â
Glen gave a small, understanding nod, his gaze lingering on you for a moment longer than usual. The comfortable silence stretched between you both, but then, as if on cue, a gust of cool air swept across the deck. You couldnât help but shiver slightly, the chill catching you off guard.
Before you could react, you felt a warmth at your shoulders. Glenâs arm wrapped around you instinctively, pulling you closer to him, the solid feel of his presence comforting against the cool night. His touch, the gentle weight of his arm around you, made your heart race for reasons you couldnât quite explain. It felt natural, like he was just trying to make sure you were okayâbut there was something else there, something unspoken that hummed beneath the surface.
For a brief moment, you thought he might lean in, maybe say something that would break the quiet tension between you. But he didnât. He just stood there, close enough that you could feel the heat radiating from him, but not close enough to cross that invisible line.
The silence stretched on, but it wasnât uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence where two people simply existed in each otherâs presence, the world around them fading away. Still, something about the stillness between you and Glen made you aware of the subtle shift in the air. You glanced up at him, catching the thoughtful, almost distant expression on his face.
âYou okay?â you asked, the question slipping out before you could stop it. There was something in his demeanor that made you wonder if something was on his mind, maybe something he wasnât sharing. He seemed more serious now, the playfulness from earlier replaced by a quiet vulnerability you couldnât quite place.
Glen turned his head to look at you, blinking as if he had been lost in thought, and then he let out a low chuckle, brushing it off. âYou donât want to know,â he said, his voice light but guarded, as if the answer to your question was something he wasnât sure he wanted to share.
You raised an eyebrow, a playful grin curling on your lips. âTry me.â
His gaze flickered to yours, and for a second, you could see the flicker of hesitation in his eyes. It was a small thing, but it was thereâa brief moment of vulnerability that he quickly masked with a deep breath. He didnât say anything at first, just looking out at the dark sky, the stars twinkling above.
âIâm justâŚâ He trailed off, then ran a hand through his hair, clearly unsure of how to continue. âI donât know. Just... thinking about how much things have changed recently.â Glen sighed again, letting out a breath like he was releasing something heavy. âI guess... itâs just been a lot. Work, family... and now you. Itâs all good stuff, but itâs a lot to juggle sometimes, you know?â He paused, his words becoming slower as if he were processing something in real-time. âI donât want to mess things up. With my family, with you...â
The air between you and Glen felt thick with unspoken things, so you did the only thing that felt natural. You shifted slightly, closing the space between you until you were pressed against his chest. Instantly, his arms wrapped around your shoulders, pulling you in, and you rested your head just beneath his chin, feeling the steady rhythm of his breath against you.
For a brief, fleeting moment, you thought you mightâve felt somethingâsomething soft and sweet, maybe even a kiss. But when you lifted your head to look up at him, you realized it wasnât that at all. Heâd just rested his chin on the top of your head, his touch warm and gentle, like a quiet reassurance that you didnât know you needed until now.
You pulled back a fraction, just enough to tilt your head and meet his eyes. Your fingers brushed against his chest lightly as you took a breath, wanting to say somethingâanythingâthat would keep this moment from slipping away.
âYou couldnât possibly mess things up with me,â you assured him, your voice steady but filled with a quiet confidence. You didnât know why you said it, but you meant it. The last thing you wanted was for Glen to feel like he was doing anything wrong by simply being himself.
Glen laughed softly, though it was a little unsure. âDonât be so sure about that,â he teased, his voice still carrying that hint of vulnerability beneath the humor. He didnât let go of you, thoughâhis hands resting lightly on your shoulders, almost like he was grounding himself to you in this moment.
You couldn't help but smile at the mix of playfulness and seriousness in his tone. It was typical of himâstrong and self-assured, yet still somehow uncertain when it came to matters of the heart. But the way he was holding you, the way his arms had wrapped around you so naturallyâit told you everything you needed to know.
âYouâre not as big a mess as you think you are, Glen,â you said, your voice soft, a playful smile tugging at the corners of your lips. âAt least not when it comes to me.â
Glen smiled back at you, the warmth of it reaching his eyes. The distance between you two, both physically and emotionally, was narrowing with every second.
Another breeze stirred the air, cool against your skin. It caught a strand of your hair, whipping it across your face. You instinctively reached up to brush it away, but before your hand could meet your face, Glen shifted. His fingers grazed your cheek softly, his touch warm as he gently tucked the errant strand of hair behind your ear. His fingers lingered there, resting along your jaw for a heartbeat longer than necessary.
You looked up at him, and in that moment, the world seemed to slow down. His eyes, dark and unreadable, met yours, searching, almost like he was wondering what you were thinkingâif you were feeling the same pull he was. His breath caught slightly, the air thick with everything unsaid between you two.
For a long, fragile moment, you were certain neither of you wanted to break the connection, but it was like the world was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. Glenâs fingers lingered on your face, his touch almost electric, and you could feel the heat rising between you.
He parted his lips like he was about to say somethingâanythingâbut then stopped. Something held him back, that same hesitation that had kept him quiet, kept him at a distance all evening. His breath faltered, but you could tell he was fighting himself.
The words left you before you could even think twice about them. Soft, barely a whisper, just enough for him to hear: âKiss me.â
You werenât sure if he caught it at first. It was so quiet, almost too soft for him to hear. If he didnât want to, he could easily dismiss it, pretend he hadnât heard and let the moment pass. The uncertainty and the weight of the words hung between you, like a fragile thread.
But then Glenâs tongue darted out to lick his lips, and the gesture was enough to make your heart race. Without another word, he closed the distance between you, his lips pressing against yours in a kiss that was soft but full of promise. There was no hesitation now, no second-guessing.
The world melted away, and all that remained was the warmth of his mouth, the sweetness of his breath mingling with yours
The world melted away, and all that remained was the warmth of his mouth, the sweetness of his breath mingling with yours. You could taste the hint of his cologne, feel the heat radiating off his skin as his lips gently moved against yours, a quiet but insistent promise.
You reached up, your hands trembling slightly, and grabbed onto the fabric of his shirt, as if grounding yourself in this moment. His touch was everythingâstrong, steady, and a little desperate, like he was holding on to something precious. One hand found its way to the back of your neck, his fingers threading through your hair as he gently pulled you closer, his lips urging yours to open. The soft pressure was almost a question, and you answered it without hesitation, your lips parting as his tongue slid in, exploring you with slow, deliberate movements.
The kiss deepened, and everything else faded. His free hand moved to your waist, pulling you against him, making you feel the undeniable heat of his body. The way he held you tightly, possessively, ignited a spark inside you that set your skin on fire. You felt every inch of him, the strength in his arms, the warmth of his chest pressed against yours, his heart racing in time with yours.
Without breaking the kiss, he gently pushed you back, guiding you until you were pinned between his solid body and the railing behind you. You could feel the cool metal against your back, the contrast of it to the heat radiating from him, but it only made the moment more intense, more real.
His mouth never left yours, and you were lost in itâlost in the way he kissed you, in the way he made you feel like you were the only thing that mattered in that instant. His tongue moved against yours, a slow, sensual dance that sent shivers down your spine. He was patient but relentless, as if he couldn't get close enough, as if he wanted to drown in this feeling, in the taste of you.
For a moment, you lost yourself completely in him. The kiss became everythingâthe way his lips molded to yours, the heat of his body pressed against yours, and the deep, almost desperate need that surged between you. It was as if nothing else in the world existed but the two of you.
When he finally pulled back, just enough to let you both catch your breath, his forehead pressed to yours, his breath ragged. He didn't let go, his hands still on your waist, his body so close you could feel the warmth of him seeping into you. His eyes searched yours, almost like he was asking for permission, or maybe trying to figure out what this meant.
Glen took a slow, deliberate step back, his hands lingering for just a second longer than necessary on your waist, as if reluctant to let go. His gaze locked with yours, still heavy with unspoken words and that same intensity that hung thick in the air. His lips parted slightly, as if he might say something, but the moment lingeredâunsaid, just like everything else that had passed between you two.
He reached down, his fingers brushing against yours, and when he grasped your hand, it felt grounding, but at the same time, like a promise. He gently pulled you inside, his touch still warm against your skin, the heat from the kiss still lingering between you.
You stepped closer to him, his hand never leaving yours, and the world outside seemed to fade away once more. The air was different insideâcharged in a way that made everything feel more intimate, more real. Glen glanced at you over his shoulder, a subtle smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, his eyes dark with something unreadable, something that only added to the tension building between you.
And then, with a quiet, almost playful tug, he led you further into the house, closing the door softly behind you.Â
* * * * *
You stirred slowly, the warmth of the bed and the soft, rhythmic press of Glenâs lips against your shoulder coaxing you out of sleep. His gentle kisses trailed up to your collarbones, each one sending a pleasant shiver down your spine. The sensation was soft, tenderâlike he was savoring the moment, as if he didnât want to break the stillness of the morning.
You couldnât help but smile to yourself, your eyes fluttering open just enough to catch the sight of himâhis face only inches from your skin, eyes closed in quiet reverence. His arm tightened around you, pulling you closer as though you were the only thing anchoring him to this moment. It felt so natural, so right, that you could almost forget it was Christmas morning.
With a soft sigh, you rolled onto your back, the bed creaking slightly as you shifted. You turned your head, your gaze meeting his. He hadnât noticed you were awake, his lips still lightly grazing your skin, his breath warm against your neck.
A small, sleepy smile tugged at the corners of your lips, unable to hide the happiness bubbling up inside you. It was a moment of peace, of simplicity, and you knew it was one youâd carry with you for a long time.
When Glen finally met your eyes, his expression softened, a quiet tenderness in his gaze that made your heart flutter in your chest. He leaned in again, pressing a kiss to your lips, brief but full of meaning. âMerry Christmas,â he whispered, his voice low and rough from sleep.
âMerry Christmas,â you whispered back, your fingers gently brushing against his cheek, the moment feeling so intimate, so perfect.
Just as you were starting to drift back into the peaceful warmth of the moment, Glenâs phone rang, breaking the silence. He groaned and reached for it, clearly annoyed by the interruption. "Not now," he muttered, glancing at the screen and seeing it was Leslie calling.
"Seriously?" you teased, raising an eyebrow. "She canât let us have five more minutes?"
Glen chuckled, though it was laced with mock frustration. "Guess not. She probably wants us to hurry up and join the rest of the chaos." He answered the call and put it on speaker, letting out another groan. "Leslie, itâs Christmas morning, cut me some slack."
You heard her voice, cheerful but insistent. "Yeah, I know, but you need to get over here! Weâre all waiting for you to start the presents."
Glen rubbed a hand over his face, looking over at you with a grin. "Alright, alright. Weâll get up and head right over."
But Leslie, ever the sharp one, picked up on the tone in his voice. "Wait a second," she said with a teasing smirk in her voice. "You said âweâllâ get up? So that means... youâre both still in bed?"
You felt Glen stiffen, his eyes locking onto yours as the corners of his mouth twitched. Before he could respond, Leslie continued, sounding far too smug for 8 AM. "And sheâs with you, huh? In your room?"
Glen groaned dramatically, putting a hand to his forehead. "Leslie, itâs too early for this," he muttered, clearly embarrassed by the line of questioning.
Leslie wasnât letting up, though. "Oh, I get it," she said in a sing-song voice, a little too amused for her own good. "Iâll take that as a âyes.â"
Glen looked at you, mouthing, "Iâm gonna kill her."
He sighed, sitting up on the bed, clearly trying to change the subject. "Okay, okay. Weâll be over soon, alright? Stop prying."
"Sure, sure. Just donât take too long, or I might have to send Mom in there to drag you both out," Leslie teased before hanging up with a cheerful goodbye.
Glen, still looking mildly exasperated, dropped the phone onto the bed. He laughed and leaned back against the headboard, stretching his arms over his head. "Alright, guess we should get up and face the madness."
You and Glen exchanged sleepy smiles as you both began to rise from the bed. Glen stretched his arms overhead, letting out a long yawn, before he slipped on his slippers and headed toward the bathroom. You turned toward the guest room, mentally running through the few things you had to do to get ready for the day.
As you dressed, you couldn't help but replay last night in your headâthe kiss, the closeness, the way it felt like the world had just slipped away, leaving only the two of you. But now, in the cold light of morning, you couldnât shake the uncertainty that lingered. What did it mean? What were you to Glen after everything that had happened? Your heart raced as the thought crossed your mind. Was this something you were supposed to talk about? Or would it be just another fleeting moment, like so many others in the past?
You finished getting dressed, smoothing your shirt and running your fingers through your hair, trying to calm the nerves that had appeared out of nowhere. When you stepped out of the guest room, you found Glen already ready, his jacket on and his keys in hand. He was standing by the door, waiting for you.
He gave you a soft smile when he saw you. "Ready?" he asked, his voice warm but with an edge of hesitation that matched how you were feeling.
You nodded, trying to brush off the unease. "Yeah.â
You followed him to the truck, your mind still racing with questions. The drive was quiet at first, the hum of the engine filling the space between you. As you passed the familiar landmarks, your eyes wandered to Glen, who was focused on the road. You wanted to ask him everything, to know where the two of you stood after everything, but you didnât want to make things awkward.
Finally, Glen broke the silence. âIâve been thinking,â he started, his voice steady but quiet. He glanced at you for a moment before turning his focus back to the road. âAbout last night. About us.â
Your heart skipped a beat. âYeah?â you prompted softly, unsure of where he was going with this.
He let out a breath, his lips curving into a faint, almost self-conscious smile. âLook, I know my life isnât exactly⌠simple. My schedule is a mess, and Iâm gone a lot. I donât want to pretend like thatâs not going to be a challenge. But,â he paused, his voice growing more certain, âI want to see where this goes. With you. If youâre willing to, that is.â
For a moment, the world seemed to narrow down to just the two of you. You could hear the nervous edge in his voice, the way he shifted slightly in his seat like he wasnât sure how youâd respond.
You let the weight of his words settle over you before you replied. âIâm willing to,â you said, your voice soft but sure. âI wouldnât have let last night happen if I wasnât.â
A flicker of relief crossed his face, and he smiledâan honest, open kind of smile that made your chest feel warm. He reached over, his hand finding yours where it rested on your lap. His touch was gentle but firm, like he was grounding himself in this moment.
âOkay,â he said, his thumb brushing lightly against the back of your hand. âThen weâll figure it out. Whatever it takes.â
You squeezed his hand, your heart lighter now, but the lingering uncertainty still hung between you. âSo, what do we do about your family?â you asked, tilting your head toward him. âDo we tell them, orâŚ?â
He sighed, his lips quirking in a wry smile. âThatâs the million-dollar question, isnât it?â His fingers tapped against the steering wheel, his mind clearly turning over the possibilities. âPart of me thinks itâs better to just get it out there. But another part of me⌠I donât want to make today about us when itâs supposed to be about family.â
You nodded, understanding his hesitation. âWe donât have to decide right now,â you offered. âLetâs just see how the day goes.â
Glen smiled again, his gaze soft as it flicked toward you. âYeah, that sounds like a plan.â
The rest of the drive was filled with a sense of quiet anticipation, the air between you lighter now but still charged with the potential of what was to come. Glen didnât let go of your hand the entire way, and you couldnât help but feel that, no matter what, the two of you were in this together.
Glen stepped inside first, his hand still firmly clasping yours as he guided you over the threshold. The sound of laughter and conversation spilled from the living room, filling the house with the unmistakable hum of family.
Glen paused just inside the door, turning to face you. His hand lingered in yours for a moment before he gently released it, reaching instead to help you shrug off your coat. His fingertips brushed lightly against your arms as he slid the thick material off your shoulders. You glanced up at him, catching the faint smile tugging at his lips.
"Thanks," you murmured, offering him a small smile of your own as he hung your coat on the nearby rack.
He gave a slight nod. "Anytime," he replied, his voice low and quiet, just for you.
With that, you made your way toward the living room, Glen trailing close behind. The sight that greeted you was as welcoming as the sounds and smells: his entire family gathered around the tree, mugs of steaming coffee and hot cocoa in hand, their laughter blending with the soft crackle of the fireplace.
"Well, there they are!" Leslie called out, her grin widening as she spotted the two of you.
At her words, all eyes turned to you and Glen. You felt a momentary flush of warmthânot from embarrassment, but from the sheer warmth of the welcome in their gazes. Glenâs mom was the first to rise, crossing the room to pull you into a gentle hug.
âMerry Christmas, sweetheart,â she said, her voice as soft and kind as ever.
âMerry Christmas,â you replied, smiling as you returned the hug.
Glen hung back for a moment, his gaze sweeping over his family before it landed back on you. When his mom released you, he stepped forward to exchange his own hugs and greetings, his presence grounding you in the lively room.
As you settled into the living room, Leslieâs sharp eyes darted between you and Glen, a knowing glint lighting her expression. âYou two look cozy,â she teased, raising an eyebrow.
Glen shot her a warning look but didnât rise to her bait. Instead, he placed a steadying hand on your back as he guided you toward an empty spot on the couch. âItâs still too early for your commentary, Les,â he said dryly, though there was a faint smile tugging at his lips.
You couldnât help but laugh softly as you sat down, feeling Glenâs hand linger for just a moment longer than necessary before he joined you. The family resumed their chatter, and you felt yourself relax into the warmth of the room and the easy dynamic Glen had with his family.
There was an unspoken understanding between you and Glen as the morning unfolded. Whatever the day might bring, you were in this together, and that made everythingâhis teasing siblings, the bustling energy, the unrelenting sense of closenessâfeel a little less overwhelming and a lot more like home.
The morning carried on with a joyous rhythm, the room buzzing with laughter and the crinkling of wrapping paper as Glenâs mom began handing out gifts from beneath the tree. One by one, brightly wrapped packages found their way into eager hands, and the sound of tearing paper soon filled the room.
You found yourself nestled comfortably on the couch beside Glen, warmth radiating from his side. At some point, almost without thinking, you leaned into him, resting your head lightly on his shoulder. His arm instinctively came up to wrap around you, pulling you just a little closer.
The moment felt effortless, like breathing, and you let yourself savor the comfort of it.
Unfortunately, it didnât go unnoticed.
âOhhh, would you look at that?â Leslieâs voice rang out, her tone dripping with mischief.
Your head snapped up, a blush creeping up your cheeks as you realized all eyes were now on you and Glen. His parents exchanged exaggerated grins while his older sisterâs gaze softened with a mix of joy and curiosity.
âWell, this is new,â somebody teased.
Glen let out a long-suffering groan, running a hand over his face. âCan we not make this a thing?â he muttered, though there was no real heat in his voice.
Leslie was undeterred, her grin widening as she leaned forward. âOh, no, this is absolutely a thing. Care to share with the group, Glen?â
He sighed, glancing at you. The flush on your cheeks deepened, but there was no judgment or pressure in his expressionâonly quiet reassurance.
Finally, he turned back to his family, his shoulders squaring as if bracing himself. âFine. Yes, weâre⌠seeing where things go,â he admitted, his voice steady but soft. âAnd thatâs all youâre getting out of me right now.â
His mom clasped her hands together, her face lighting up like the tree behind her. âOh, Glen,â she said warmly, her joy unmistakable.
The teasing and comments came in waves after that, a mix of playful ribbing and heartfelt congratulations. You felt your face grow impossibly warm, but Glenâs arm around you tightened, grounding you.
Eventually, Glen turned to his family with a pointed look. âOkay, youâve had your fun. Can we get back to the presents now?â
Leslie laughed but relented, reaching for another package beneath the tree. As the room shifted back to its lively rhythm, Glen leaned in close, his lips brushing against your ear.
âYou okay?â he asked, his voice low enough that only you could hear.
You nodded, a small smile tugging at your lips. âYeah. Are you?â
His eyes softened, and he gave a slight nod. âYeah.â
And as the morning carried on, the lively chatter and laughter of his family surrounded you, filling the room with warmth. Glenâs arm stayed comfortably around you, an anchor amidst the joyful chaos. For the first time in a long time, you felt at easeâlike you belonged, not just in this house but at his side.
Whatever this was, whatever it might become, one thing was clear: this was the beginning of something worth holding onto.

THE TRAGEDY O3: casual
Osamu lies on his back with his phone held above his face. Sheâs really laying it on thick.
She flops onto his bed beside him, laying flat on her stomach. She tilts her head up to look at him. "Whaddya think?" she asks. "Believable enough?"
"Yeah," Osamu replies, closing his phone screen and dropping it on top of his chest. It's so believable, he can't control the way his chest tightens, how his gut churns and lurches. He knows it's fake, but it might be the closest thing to real that he's going to get, so he lets himself indulge. "You sound annoyingly in love."
She flips around, lying on her back to match Osamu. "Well, it helps that I am. It's not really acting."
It's not acting for him, either. He meant it when he announced to the world how pretty he thinks she is. Fuck, man, is his best attempt to put how he feels about it into words. Osamu breathes in deeply through his nose. He doesn't look at her, because he doesn't trust himself to.
In a way, it's kind of a relief. He has the opportunity to say how he really feels, for once, and not face the brunt of rejection. Some of the weight off of his shoulders, none of the humiliation.
"Try not to lay it on too thick," he tells her, partially for her sake, and partially for his own. "The more you act like you love me, the weirder it'll be for you to move onto Tsumu."
"Hmm," she muses. "Okay, that's fine. We can just be casual, then."
If Osamu had his choice, it wouldn't ever be casual. She would be his, and that would be it. He doesn't know how to be casual with her. He doesn't even know how to pretend.
"Yeah," he agrees uneasily, "casual is best."
->extras!
yn and osamu spent the night watching movies and hanging out in his room; they slept in the same bed. yn thought nothing of it and osamu kept waking up with fear and excitement in his heart
osamu has his face in his hands because he's realizing he vastly overestimated the vibes between him and yn and she was 100% right
people do mostly view them as really close friends and have sibling-zoned them and he is devastated
atsumu saw osamu's tweets and yn's tweets but did not put it together that they were talking about each other that's how platonic he perceived them to be
yn and atsumu were extremely close in high school and even though they've definitely remained close friends they're not as close as they used to be
for a while atsumu was actually pretty jealous of osamu because he felt like he stole yn's friendship from him
much to think about.........
yn and suna are good friends but they don't have the closest dynamic
akaashi and yn were complaining about the fact that there wasn't enough decor in the apartment so tanaka got a framed painting from the thrift store to hang up in the living room
but he accidentally hammered a hole in the wall trying to hang it up
free my man tanaka he didn't do anything wrong
akaashi and kenma are texting each other constantly abt the fake dating plot they cannot believe it

I dunno if I should even say this given I don't speak Japanese, but the change of "revolutionize the world" here really bothers me.
One of the things I like about Ikuhara is how he creates complex parallelisms, and I think the Black Rose Council is meant to parallel the Student Council, which is why they both speak of revolutionizing the world.
Another thing I like is his "boiling frog" approach. He lures you in with something seemingly nice, and then slowly but surely introduces odder and odder elements, occasionally jarring you until eventually you land yourself somewhere really bizarre. The Black Rose Saga does that very well and marks a shift in tone.
I get the impetus behind the change, but I've always interpreted the use of "revolutionize the world" as ambiguous, and in this case it's really meant to make you question what their revolution even brings. If this underhanded stranger can speak of the same thing as the "heroes," then what is it those heroes actually speak of? This disconcerting man also has a Rose Bride and seeks to usurp the powers that be...
But to what end? If his desire is the same, what does that say of the Student Council, and especially of Utena herself? They both don pink hair and off-puttingly similar Rose Brides, after all, and even similar uniforms. What do they actually want to replace these power structures with? Cuz Mikage just wants his Rose Bride to take Anthy's place and to unlock eternity for himself.
My only translation experience has been through a few songs, but changing a specific phrase like that doesn't seem right to me.
Not only that, but Mikage, and, for the viewer on a rewatch, the Student Council, give cult vibes. Mikage reduces people to their most basic and awful urges and ideas in order to turn them into weapons, and when he finally has them on the precipice, he ushers himself in and says:
You have no choice but to revolutionize the world.
Which reminds me of an actual cult.
I take this from Haruki Murakami's Underground, as translated by Alfred Birnbaum and Philip Gabriel:
Around that time I went to the Aum dojo at Setagaya. They explained my situation to me and told me right then and there how to treat it. I tried the breathing exercises they taught me, and I couldn't believe how quickly I got better. For two months after that I didn't go to the dojo very much, but then I started going regularly, doing volunteer work, folding leaflets and stuff. Soon after there was a "Secret Yoga" session where you could talk directly to the Leader [Shoko Asahara], and I asked him what I should do about my poor health. "You need to become a renunciate," he told me. It was like he saw the real me at a glance. People were amazed because he'd never said that to anyone beforeâso I felt I had no choice but to leave school and become a renunciate. I was 22.
(Bold emphasis mine)
Ikuhara also mentions Aum sometime in 1998, I can't remember if it was an interview or DVD commentary. Given one of his later works, the parallels are very clear.
I guess to make a more normal comparison, think of how many men complain about how "women don't allow men to express their feelings" or the "male loneliness epidemic." But you also know that most of them go back to old and harmful ways. They squirm at terms like "patriarchy" and "toxic masculinity," and when you ask them what causes these things and what they desire to replace it with, you begin to understand that these men fundamentally misunderstand the issues at hand. That doesn't invalidate their complaints, but you can't let that justifiable complaint blind you from what they truly want: to be the ones on top.
This is gonna be a really out of pocket comparison, but even P. Diddy complained about how white dominated companies are. But what did he actually do? Hearing him say that made my own skin crawl as a person of color, even though I agree with it. I just don't let that agreement blind myself from what people like him actually do and offer to the world. I've had that example on mind because of the recent F.D Signifier video on Diddy.
I think that's what the Black Rose Saga introduces to the series, and why I think changing this line doesn't make sense. I personally think it's meant to be flaccid coming from him, it's meant to be jarring just judging by Ikuhara's style (although I've only gone through RGU and MPD). If there absolutely must be a change, maybe "You have no choice but to overthrow the world around you" would work as a neater and more direct parallelism, although given "revolutionize the world" doesn't seem to be an idiom or some play on words in Japanese (other than "revolution" also meaning a cycle, as in the revolution of the moon around the Earth), I really don't see much reason for the change.
Of course, I don't speak Japanese nor do I know much about translation. And this is just my interpretation of Ikuhara.
I know this seems like a lot, but it's really bugged me. Other than that, I like this translation and adore the various corrections/creativities like "almglocken" for "cowbell."
Fansub Release + Analysis of Utena Ep 14
This is a big one!!
My fansub release posts aren't usually like this, but this episode is so jam packed with stuff I want to talk about that I had to write my translation notes as a series of essays. It's longer than usual so strap in!
First, a word on âThe Mikage Seminarâ
Iâve always found the translation âthe Mikage Seminarâ very strange. In English, a seminar is an event â a lecture. Yet âthe Mikage Seminarâ is discussed as though itâs not a recurring lecture, but a society or a school of therapy, or a cult (like scientology). In fact I did a bit of reading about scientology to try and find an alternative translation, and discovered that the origins of scientology, namely a set of ideas and practices called Dianetics, bears a lot of similarities to âthe Mikage Seminarâ. Both involve a type of therapy where one person looks into their mind and talks to an âauditorâ.
The auditor coaxes the preclear to recall as much as possible. â Wikipedia
This in particular stood out to me! Mikage often says ă桹ăăăăŁă¨ćˇąăă during his interviews (âDeeper. Dig deeper.â).
The Japanese word ăźăăăźăŤ doesnât actually come from the English âseminarâ but the German âSeminarâ (capitalised). According to Wikipedia, in Germany, and often in Japan, Seminar/ăźăăăźăŤ is used to refer to a university course that includes a thesis project. So ăźăăăźăŤ refers to a course of learning, rather than a talk or lecture. And it would make a lot of sense to call a system like Dianetics a âcourseâ. Almost like a âcourseâ of medicine â a âcourseâ of psychological practices that you can join but never complete.
So it would make sense to translate it as âthe Mikage Courseâ. But âcourseâ has more meanings in English than just this, and in the context of a university this makes it sound more like a mundane teaching course. So I tried some other words: the Mikage Sessions, the Mikage Method, Mikage Psychotherapy, Mikage Therapy, the Mikage Movement. None seemed quite right. Until I remembered this post. ăźăăăźăŤ is a foreign word in Japanese, why not find a foreign word for the translation? And so I settled on this:
The Mikage Seminarium, AKA The Society of the Black RoseâŚ
Seminarium is Latin, and is where both the German and English derive seminar from. Its original meaning is âseed plotâ, but itâs also just the Polish word for seminar. I really like how the Latin makes its meaning ambiguous â it kind of sounds like a location, kind of sounds like a society, and kind of sounds like a learning course. Because it is all of these things.
Anthy: ă§ăŻăéŚčăăă夹礟ăăžăă Kanae: ăăăăăăŽäşăăĺ§ăăăŁăŚĺźăă§ăăăŽăăăăăăăăăăŻăăŞăăŽćŹĺ˝ăŽăĺ§ăăăŤăŞăăă ăăă
A more literal translation:
Anthy: Thank you for having us, Kanae-san. Kanae: Please⌠you can just call me âsisterâ. Iâm going to be your real sister soon enough anyway.
The translation I ended up going with:
Anthy: Thank you for having us, Miss Ohtori. Kanae: Please... you can just call me Kanae. We're going to be family soon. There's no need for the formalities.
Japanese honorifics strike again!
In English, sisters-in-law donât ask to be called âsisterâ. That would be super weird in most scenarios, and this scene is trying to evoke a particular familiar feeling of closing a distance gap in a relationship. The audience is meant to relate. Changing how Anthy addresses Kanae was pivotal to this scene working properly.
ăăăăžăăăăăŞăăŻä¸çăéŠĺ˝ăăăăăŞăă§ăăă
I understand. Your only choice is to force the world to change around you.
This line is translated as âYour only choice is to revolutionise the worldâ by basically every other translation. The reason is clear â the Japanese is the same as when Utena pulls the sword out of Anthy, or when any of the other characters talk about ârevolutionising the worldâ. However, in this context, I donât like it. The nuance of the English phrase is quite different to the Japanese phrase. In English, itâs often used to describe new commercial products: âThis new device will revolutionise the world!â It comes with an implied âfor the betterâ, but has used to describe technological developments so unexciting that it can also feel hollow. When the student council talk of revolutionising the world, they sound like revolutionaries â the context makes it work. But in this context, it comes out of nowhere and doesnât have any of that fervour, which makes it sound hollow and flaccid when it should sound sinister and manipulative.
I think a pervading throughline for all the Black Rose duelists is that they see their problems as caused by other people, with themselves being blameless. Rather than change how they approach their situation, Mikage tells them theyâre in the right.
Your behaviour will set you down a path. If that path leads to your goals, well done! However, if your path does not lead to your goals, thereâs only two ways you can achieve them.
The first is to change your behaviour so that it does align with your goals. The second, impossible way, is for the rest of the world to change such that your current path DOES end up leading to your goals. This second way is not possible in the real world. But it is possible in Utena.
Also Iâll just leave this here: âaround youâ â ârevolveâ â ârevolutionâ đ
Kanae tried to build a relationship with Anthy in a passive, non-confrontational, extremely Japanese way â the way she has been taught to behave, the âproperâ way, a mechanical following of the social scripts. We donât see a lot of their relationship, but the way she behaved and spoke of behaving towards Anthy is very very similar to the way my Japanese grandmother has behaved towards my and my brotherâs partners.
It was unthinkable to her to change this pattern of behaviour. Her only choice was to change Anthy, change the rest of the world, so that her behaviour would lead to the outcomes she wants. You could describe this forceful bending of reality to be ârevolutionising the worldâ.
ăăŽéťččăŽăăéăăç§ăŻăăăăĺăŽç§ăćźăăŞăăŚä˝ăă
As long as I have this Black Rose, I'm free from the lie I was living before.
Besides gender, growing up, and resisting change (which exist as separate themes but also all intertwine as one), another major theme present in Utena is the self and subjective reality. The self is explored within those first major three themes, but also in terms of how the self dictates reality with the Black Rose duellists.
Black Rose Kanae says that her past self was a lie.
It reminds me of all the times when Iâve been going through a personal trial and Iâve looked back on my past self and thought âHow naive I was. I understand things better now.â And then after a while I realise I was wrong, and my first self was more right. And then later still, maybe I re-realise that the second self was more right! And so on! The reality of truth (or to use Kanaeâs language, âliesâ) is so subjective.
Who dictates knowledge production? Who decides what is true; what is valid knowledge? This is a question of sociology - and at the moment that answer is "science does, kinda". But science and academic systems are supported by capitalist structures and tainted by capitalistic incentives â needing to be published in a journal, issues of replicability, the barrier to entry into academia in the first place, etc, etc. In the future we may find our current way of organising knowledge to be archaic and primitive in the same way we look back at medieval scholars.
But what about organising self-knowledge? Knowledge where the only one who can really decide what is true is yourself. And the only one that can decide what yourself even IS is yourself. I feel like I have looked back on my old ways of conceptualising myself many times (not even counting the gender-based revelations) and thought it primitive and archaic, and NOW I truly understand who I am and how to think of myself and how my thoughts interact with my other thoughts. But I have no doubt that Iâll look back on this current self of mine and reject their way of thinking too.
After their heart is replaced by the Black Rose, the duellists themselves frame this change as a moment of self realisation, of clarity. Once the rose is inside them, they wake up from themselves, like I have countless times. Kanae says herself, âThis is the true me.â Honestly, I donât doubt it. I think that version of Kanae was her true self at that moment, given the things influencing her. Being brainwashed doesnât make you less of a person, or less yourself. It just makes you organise your reality differently.
ĺżăĺçľăăăŚä˝ăŁăă ăăŽéăŤĺăăăŽăăĽă¨ăŞăšăă§ăŻă彟弳ăŻç ´ăăŞăăŞă
We won't be able to defeat her by simply freezing someone's heart and forcing them to duel.
Anya and I discussed this in depth. I originally translated ĺż as âmindâ, because that was the first thing that popped into my head and I thought that was the simple part of the translation. However, Anya pointed out that it didnât make sense with the themes of self and subjective reality, and I strongly agreed, so I changed it to âheartâ instead.
Anya suggested âconscious mindâ instead of âheartâ but I think heart is more accurate. ĺż (kokoro) can mean heart or mind in Japanese (I find it interesting that those two things are portrayed as opposites in English), and that kanji is found in the word for biological heart, ĺżč (shinzou). When they say of the Black Rose "This is your new heart" they use ĺżč. They also say "Your new ĺ˝ (life/lifeforce)" which I translated as soul since it sounded more hardcore and because "your new life" is a set phrase in English meaning a new chapter in your life rather than your life force. I think the idea is that they're freezing the duellists' ability to love and feel empathy, which in my opinion is necessary for them to commit to the unbelievably selfish act of revolutionising/reconstructing/bending the entire structure of the world for their own convenience.
A very special thanks to @dontbe-lasanya for being there to talk through all these themes and ideas. I'm incredibly proud of this episode's translation and I wouldn't have been able to do it without them.

hii! would it be possible for you do to smth with rapper!chris and singer!reader like in an argument? she's being like rlly sassy, and he's not having it.
love your work, xoxo!
â.Ë⎠rapper!chris gives singer!reader an attitude adjustment
the music pulses through the crowded house, a steady thrum that matches the beat of your heart. lil skiesâ party is in full swing, packed with people flaunting their best outfits and vibes.
you stick close to chris at first, your hand looped around his arm as you weave through the crowd. heâs glowing tonightâchain sparkling under the neon lights, his grin wide and easy, and that confident air that draws people in like a magnet.
you try not to notice how the room seems to orbit him. itâs always like this. everyone loves chris.
youâve had a couple of drinks, and heâs been passing a blunt back and forth with his brothers. the triplets are a force of their own, but chris stands out, as he always does. you watch him throw his head back in laughter at some joke nick cracks.
you love that smile. itâs what hooked you in the first place.
but then you notice her.
across the room, leaning against the kitchen counter, a girl is staring at chris. noâstaring through you, her gaze locked on him like you donât even exist. her lashes flutter as she tilts her head, a coy smile playing on her lips. sheâs doing it on purpose, you can tell. her body language screams it: the way she adjusts her skimpy top, showing just a little more skin, the way she sips her drink slowly, almost tauntingly.
you glance at chris. he hasnât noticed herâheâs too busy talking to matt about something, his hands gesturing animatedly. but it doesnât matter. her intentions are clear, and theyâre pissing you off.
"really?" you mutter under your breath, more to yourself than anyone else. but the irritation simmers, fueled by the alcohol in your system. you canât stop the thoughts racing through your mind.
chris turns to you, his eyebrows raised. "whatâs up?" he asks, that easy smile still on his face.
you bite the inside of your cheek. "nothing," you mumble, even though itâs not nothing.
he gives you a look, the one that says he knows youâre lying. he always knows. "c'mon mama, tell me," he says, leaning closer so you can hear him over the music.
you roll your eyes, crossing your arms. "that girl over there has been eye-fucking you."
chris glances around, confused. "what girl?"
"donât play dumb, chris," you snap, your voice sharper than you intend. "the one in the kitchen."
his expression shifts, his smile faltering as he scoffs, "ma, i didnât even notice her," he says, his tone honest yet slightly irritated that you're mad at him for something he can't control. "m'not lookin' at anyone but you."
"thatâs not the point!" you whine, your voice rising. "sheâs staring at you, and youâre just fucking standing here like you don't give a fuck."
chris runs a hand through his hair, looking frustrated now. "fuck am i supposed to do 'bout that?"
"you could at least act like you care!" you shoot back, your words slurring slightly from the alcohol.
"i do care ma," he says, his voice tight. "but m'not startin' a scene over sum'n i can't even control."
your chest tightens, the mix of jealousy and alcohol clouding your judgment. "you donât fucking get it, chris. you never do."
his eyes narrow, the easygoing vibe heâs been carrying all night slipping away. "never?" he repeats, his tone sharp now. "really? thatâs what y'think?"
you cross your arms tighter, trying to steady yourself. "yeah, i do," you say, the words coming out harsher than you intend. "you fucking act like itâs nothing, like it doesnât matter, but it does."
chris shakes his head, his jaw tightening as he takes a step back, his frustration plain on his face. "wow," he mutters, running a hand over his face. he scoffs, shaking his head as he looks at the floor, "'y'never do,' she said..."
"donât you fucking twist this on me," you snap. "iâm not the one acting dumb while some girlâ"
before you can finish, chris grabs your armânot hard, but firm enough to stop you mid-sentence. his eyes are dark, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
you open your mouth to protest, but before you can get a word out, heâs tugging you through the crowd. you stumble slightly, his grip steadying you as he weaves through the sea of drunk celebrities. your heart pounds, both from the lingering anger and the sudden shift in his energy.
he doesnât say a word as he pulls you down a hallway and pushes open the door to a bathroom, ushering you inside before closing and locking the door behind him. the sound of the lock clicking sends a jolt through you, the tension in the small space almost suffocating.
"what the fuck, chris?" you snap, crossing your arms, though your voice lacks the bite it had moments ago.
he scoffs, a hint of a smirk on his lips as he shakes his head. he sets his drink down on the counter before he pushes you against the door of the bathroom by your waist, his grip tight.
you gasp, caught completely off guard, confusion yet something else swirling in your slightly lidded eyes, "what're you doing?" you ask as you furrow your brows, keeping up your sassy tone.
"y'clearly need an attitude adjustment baby," he mutters, leaning in closer until his lips are a centimeter away from yours.
you donât respondâcanât respondâbecause the next thing you know, his mouth is on yours, claiming you with a heat that leaves no room for argument. his hands slide to your hips, pushing you harder against the door, and any protest you had dies in your throat.
every ounce of jealousy and bitterness is gone by the time chris has you bent over the bathroom sink, fucking you with remaining irritation and force. he has one hand squeezing the flesh of your ass while the other holds your face up by your throat, forcing you to watch yourself fall apart for him in the mirror.
"this what y'needed didn't you?" he snickers through a grunt, smirking at your makeup smudged face in the mirror as he fucks into your puffy pussy harder.
when you try to respond, all that comes out is jumbled and incoherent whines, your mind clouded with intoxication and pure bliss, your hands gripping onto the countertop harshly as tears of pleasure prick the corners of your eyes.
chris chuckles darkly, swiping his tongue over his bottom lip as he slaps your ass, making you squeal and gasp, "yeah, that's what i thought. fuckin' sassin' me over shit i can't control ten minutes ago, 'n now look at you," he scoffs, hissing in pleasure with a deep grunt before he finishes his sentence, "fuckin' goin' stupid over my cock like always."
thank you for reading! <3

Disowned by Vlad, Adopted by Bruce
prompt idea
@silverblueglitter
Danny leaned back in his chair, staring at the clock as it ticked down. It was becoming unbearable, and his coffee was long gone. He needed something to take his mind off the pressure. So, naturally, he decided to take a break with a call to his old "father" figure.
"One second," Danny muttered, holding up a finger to Bruce, who was standing nearby, watching him with an amused look. "I need to make a call."
Bruce raised an eyebrow but said nothing as Danny picked up his phone, hitting speed dial with practiced ease.
The phone rang a few times before a familiar voice crackled through the line. "Danny, what is it this time?"
"Dude, I need you to disown me or something," Danny said bluntly, letting his shoulders slump as he leaned back in his chair. Bruce shifted next to him, clearly interested but not saying anything.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Vladâs voice came back, a little more strained. "What do you mean âdisown youâ? I donât think thatâs how this works."
Danny exhaled dramatically, flipping a pen between his fingers. "Look, I found a much better billionaire. Even his basement is cooler than yours, and his mansion doesn't give me the creepy âdon't go near the basementâ vibe. Iâm just saying, this Bruce Wayne guy is kind of a step up from whatever mess youâve got going on. Youâre interfering with my ability to fantasize, Vlad."
From the other end of the line, there was an offended sputter. "WhatâBruce Wayne? You canât be serious. That man isâ"
"Yeah, well, I might just call him Dad," Danny interrupted, a smirk pulling at his lips as he looked over at Bruce, who was now watching him with wide eyes. "Who knows, maybe heâs better at this âparentingâ thing. I mean, youâve been busy being a creepy ghost villain, and Bruce... well, heâs got a cool cave. You should be jealous."
Bruce froze. His posture shifted slightly, his eyes narrowing in confusion and... something else. Something a little less amused. Danny was too wrapped up in the call to notice the shift.
"I donât care if you find a âbetter billionaire.â Iâve invested time in you!" Vlad yelled, his voice thick with indignation.
"Yeah, well, maybe itâs time for an upgrade," Danny shot back, crossing his arms. "Your mansion is a total dump compared to Wayne Manor, and itâs kind of embarrassing now. I might just take up Bruce's offer to adopt me. He seems way more competent, and, honestly, I donât know what youâve been doing in your creepy lair all these years."
At this point, Bruce was visibly processing the situation, his mouth slightly open as he tried to piece together what was happening. He hadnât heard Danny mention wanting to be adopted by anyoneâespecially not someone like Bruce Wayne. His heart rate had picked up a little, though he quickly masked it with a forced casualness.
"I donât need your drama, kid!" Vlad shouted in response.
Danny shrugged, his attention drifting back to Bruce. "Donât worry, Brucie. Iâll come over sooner or later. Your mansionâs way cooler, and your kitchen has better snacks."
Danny could practically hear the steam coming out of Vladâs ears on the other side of the call as the ghost finally cut the connection with a harsh click. Danny stared at the phone for a moment, then tossed it onto the desk.
Bruce was quiet for a long moment. "You... You really want to be adopted by me?" His voice was even, but there was a slight edge to itâa crack that betrayed something beneath the calm façade.
Danny shrugged, not meeting his gaze. "I mean, I could think of worse things. You're rich, you have cool gadgets, and, honestly, it'd be nice to have a family that doesn't involve ghostly vengeance, y'know?"
Bruceâs posture shifted again, and this time he didnât hide the brief moment of genuine surprise. Then, ever the composed figure, he let out a slow breath, the ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. "I canât exactly offer you the freedom you seem to want, Danny... but if thatâs something you want to discuss, Iâd be happy to have that conversation."
Danny met Bruceâs gaze, and for a second, just a second, the weight of the world seemed a little lighter.
"Yeah," Danny said softly, leaning back in his chair again. "I mean, I guess it's not the worst offer."
Bruceâs expression softened further, though he quickly masked it again. "Good. Letâs talk when youâre ready."
The awkward silence settled between them, but it wasnât as heavy as before. Danny could see it now, just barely. Maybe Gotham wasnât such a mess after all.
Maybe it was just starting to look a little more like home.

I always make this end of the year post on here looking back on the good and bad things that happened that year but I don't really know where to begin this time. Ever since we buried my aunt in February and had a car accident on the same day this year has felt very off and it hasn't changed since.
Even yesterday we celebrated Christmas with the family and it ended in drama, which just does not happen in our family, ever. (it involved my sister's bf, our family is fine). But it just feels in line with the rest of this weird year.
There's been several deaths around us this year and I've never had as many sick days before, nothing big (I'm lucky here) but many smaller things piling up.
I've been quiet on here lately in fandom as well because I feel like I lost my fangirl vibe a bit. I stopped writing months ago and just been feeling very meh about it all (of course the disappointing season 2 and now lack of content doesn't help). It is what it is, I can't force it.
But let me end with the positive because there have been a lot of good things and many beautiful moments as well. One of the major things for me this year is that I managed to kick my depression. I was in a very dark place last year and the beginning of this one, crying so often for no reason and feeling very out of touch with everything. I'm glad to say I've been feeling much better in that department. The goal for next year is to now kick my anxiety because that one has been on a high this year (how could it not with the state of the world right now??)
But back to the positive, while I've been quiet on here I've been more present in real life, focussing on other hobbies and spending more time outside. When I stopped writing I also picked up reading books again and I'm really enjoying it and indulging in it. My husband has been through it all with me last year and it only confirms what I already knew, that he is the best guy in the entire world. We've grown closer this year (if that was even possible), he is my rock and the absolute best thing in my life.
I'm not quite sure what next year will bring, my anxiety makes it hard to feel entirely positive, but we have a lot of things to look forward to and I hope fandom can pull me back in and I might even write something again one day. But I'm not forcing the muses to come back, things are good as they are now and you might get more aesthetic than fandom posts on this blog for a while longer ;)
I want to tag some people that have kept me company during this year. I hope your holidays are everything you want them to be and the next year will bring you good thingsâ¤ď¸ (this goes for all my mutuals not just the ones I tag because I will forget so many people)

Things I Do and DON'T wanna see in Sonic 4
â ď¸SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SONIC 3â ď¸ DO NOT READ yet
With the introduction to Sonic 4 being Announced, here something's I wanna see happen in the 4th Sonic movie, now keep in mind these are just things I wanna SEE happen in the 4th movie and not that I know they're GOING to happen, it's just something I think Paramount/ SEGA should decide to do if Sonic 4 is going to be PEAK
1 thing I would absolutely love to see adapted into the Sonic films is the inclusion of rail grinding, Since it's obvious that we're going to be getting a metal Sonic storyline and therefore possibly a time travel one, I think seeing Rail grinding in probably an Apocalyptic future setting would be absolutely an amazing thing to see in live action, especially since it's pretty much a staple in Sonic games and hasn't really been adapted yet. Another thing I would love to see is the inclusion of the iconic Soap shoes, since this movie was basically taking inspiration from Sonic A2, not including the soap shoes was surprisingly a shock to me, especially since they're so iconic in that game, However I understood their reasoning probably being that they're not just in style anymore and therefore wouldn't really be serving a purpose, other than just being fan service, HOWEVER, if they were to include them in the 4th movie being that we're probably going to be seeing a possible Apocalyptic setting, then seeing Rail grinding and Soap shoes would definitely be a possible thing, especially since the Soap shoes would Definitely fit in with the overall futuristic vibe
Next up is Sonic and Amy's relationship, tbh I HONESTLY do not want her to just be solely obsessed with Sonic, I get that's her character and all but there are so many different ways you can go about it, With how she's been characterized recently, I think she'll be more than just that but I really hope they actually go that route and change her, as much as I hate the show, I really love how she's depicted in Sonic Boom, her design is beautiful, her voice is on point, and her relationship with Sonic is just so damn cute because she's not just a damsel and is actually an effing fighter and leader, Also 1 more thing I whole heartily want to see, is Sonic to just be awkward around amy and actually have him experience/ fall in love for once, most Sonic games and shows like to keep him closed off from amy and kinda deny his feelings for her, i think it would be cool if they would break away from that trope and actually have him acknowledge his feelings for her instead, Maybe that's just because I'm such a huge Sonamy shipper and have been since the beginning but it's whatever lol
Finally one thing I DON'T want to see them do again for this film is bring back Dr eggman, I feel like This will be the absolute perfect opportunity to determine weather or not the Sonic movies are ONLY Successful because of Jim Carey. if they decide to not bring back robotnik and actually decide to focus on a whole New villain and are still able to succeed in the box office, then this will undoubtedly PROVE that the Sonic films are the BEST way to do a video game adaptation and were meant to be successful with or without Jim Carey, because let's be real, if it wasn't for Jim Carey's performance then the Sonic movies wouldn't be doing as nearly as good as they are now, that isn't to say they're BAD cuz they're NOT, it's just to say that they wouldn't do as good or as well if it wasn't for robotnik. Going forward without Robotnik I think would be a Great way to test the franchise and not only give a New Villain a chance to shine, but would also prove to Paramount, that they can still COOK with or without Carey, in my opinion, having Metal Sonic be the Main Villain of the next movie would not only give you the chance to adapt other Sonic villains in a unique way, but I think probably make THIS ONE the SCARIEST villain of all time, especially with Metal/NEO Sonic.
A Villain with No emotion, No motive, no remorse, No DEEPER meaning other than simply having the "I Want to KILL YOU" mindset and is just STRAIGHT UP Evil is something haven't seen done in a Long time, tbh you can probably make him the Ultron of the Sonic universe and have him JUST be evil and it wouldn't bother us at all as long as you write him well, Plus robotnik LITERALLY had the greatest character arc in this film, from wanting to take over the world, to ending up being the one who saves it, yeah it doesn't get better than that. I Guarantee you that if Robotnik DOESN'T come back and we Actually get a new Villain that will be the BEST move for the Sonic films as a whole and I think will have the chance to ACTUALLY expand on more of his cast from here out, anyway those are just my thoughts but whaddya think?

I know I've posted before about Blitzø going "I adopted a 17-year-old girl before and by Lucifer, I'll do it again". And and at first it was just a joke/fun headcanon, but after Sinsmas, I believe it might actually happen.
Firstly, we already know Blitzø will not hesitate to adopt almost-18-year-old teenage girls that are lost and traumatised. After all, it's what he did with Loona.
Even though we don't know when Via's birthday canonically is, it's reasonable to think there's still a few months before she turns 18. Andrealphus uses this to his favour in Mastermind, to claim Stolas' legions and status for himself. And her non-canon birthday (taken from their old Instagram accounts) is in August. It's December in the show right now. This means there's still room for many things to change before Via comes of age.
They've already peppered some scenes throughout the show that hint at the fact these two would make a great dad-daughter duo. Most obviously, there's their lines in Loo Loo Land, âWhat. The. Fuck. Dad?!?!â and âI hate that fucking clown.â
More subtly, they also listen to the same music. In Queen Bee, the instrumental version of My World Is Burning Down Around Me plays from Blitzø's van. (Shoutout to the people I've seen pointing this out, nice catch!).
All of these details on their own, however, are mostly signs that Blitzø and Via could eventually get along really well. That, on its own, doesn't necessarily mean they'll be father and daughter.
But that's where Sinsmas comes in.
Because, in Sinsmas, the foreshadowing that Blitzø is one day going to be Via's dad is rampant.
Firstly, there's this. Another little instance of Via and Blitzø matching each other's vibe perfectly.
Then there's, of course, Blitzø's mental scenario where he imagines what having a family with Stolas would be likeâand he includes Octavia in that mental scenario. The two of them and their two daughters. One family unit.
But most importantlyâand this I also saw someone else talk about online and it blew my fucking mind, so again, shoutout to themâin Sinsmas, Octavia is repeatedly shown calling Blitzø "Dad".
And it's so easy to miss, because, in context, she's obviously referring to Stolas every single time.
And yet.
Again.
And again.
And again.
She calls Blitzø dad.
She has Blitzø's contact saved as "dad (calling from shitty boyfriend's phone)".
She walks into I.M.P. calling for "dad". Blitzø turns around and answers to that call.
She says "you will not hurt my dad" while she's protecting Stolas and Blitzø.
It is delightfully subtle and incredibly obvious at the same time. It happens in such a way that once you notice, you almost want to brush it off. âIt's just a coincidence. Duh, she obviously means Stolas.â
Except three times is not a coincidence.
So I'm calling it here and now. In season 2, Via lost a dad. And in season 3 (or 4), she'll get two.
I am calling it right here and now. One month before Octavia turns 18, Blitzø is going to adopt her

âŽâË LEEHAN NSFW ALPHABET A-Z
| sungho | riwoo | jaehyun | taesan | leehan |
warnings: mutual masturbation, cum eating, hair pulling, lingerie, choking,, i think that's it idk tbh.
A - aftercare (what theyâre like after sex)Â
he gets really bubbly and almost dopey after sex. his eyes form crescent shapes and they're accompanied by the biggest smile. he'd stay closeby, probably pulling u to sit in his lap or cuddling you really close to fall asleep. he'd love to place little kisses all over your face, but especially on your forehead while poking at you playfully.Â
B - boobs or ass (are they a boob man or an ass man?)Â
boobs!! this man loves your boobs so so much, he sorta uses them as if they're stress balls. his touching and kissing and things like that sometimes isn't even sexual, he just really loves your breasts. if he had a really long day or when he's bored sometimes he just really likes to play with your boobs like a curious little cat. sometimes he'll keep his hands in your shirt just to soothe himself.Â
C - cum (anything to do with cum)Â
don't ask why because honestly i don't know but i feel like he has a pretty big load, like when he cums there's usually a lot. since he cums so much i feel like he also makes a big mess with it almost every time :(( when he masturbates it spills all over his hand and sometimes gets on his bed under him or on his legs or tummy.Â
D - dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)Â
going along with the previous one, he also is a cum eater im sorry guys but he will eat his own cum after jerking off or he'll feed it to you if you're around or he'll eat yours. he'll cum all over his own fingers and smile at u while licking his hand clean.. when you guys masturbate together he loves to stick his fingers in your mouth and to stick yours into his. i feel like the first time you ever found out about his cum eating kink was after you guys masturbated together which is something else he loves doing. after he cums all over his hand he'll look into your eyes and lick his cum off the back of his hand, a dopey smile coming over his face when he sees your reaction.Â
E - experience (how experienced are they? do they know what theyâre doing?)Â
i don't think he's super experienced if at all. i feel like he hasn't really done much of anything. leehan is a #gooner like i feel like he spends a lot of time with his own hand.Â
F - favorite position (what is their favorite sex position?)Â
199 / 230
leehan loves to be able to hold you in place, whether its with your arms behind your back or with your pretty face towards him. he loves seeing the way you squirm under him and the way he can push himself so deeply inside of you with these kinds of positions. position 199 is most similar to how heâd regularly fuck you i think, he can see your face and also grab your boobs which is a win win for him.
G - goofy (are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc)Â
i think he's one of the goofiest members during sex, especially if you're taking the lead a little more. when you take the lead he takes it easy and gets all giggly and plays around a lot more. you make him so happy and it's apparent during sex a lot of the time.Â
H - hair (how well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.)Â
i think he would be pretty hairy, honestly i don't think he'd really shave or groom himself much in general. he doesn't give me the vibes that he would care that much, as long as you're happy and don't complain, he doesn't care. all he cares about is making you feel good!Â
I - intimacy (how are they during the moment, romantic aspectâŚ)Â
a lot of the things he does is for the intimate aspect but i feel like sex with him isn't always âromanticâ. like it's not always all sweet and gentle, it's rough and filthy at times. sometimes he fucks you like he hates you and other times he fucks you like he'll never be able to let you go.Â
J - jack off (masturbation headcanon)Â
lovessss jerking off to your photos or to your videos or even just to the sound of your voice. you're the most perfect person in his mind and when he sees you or hears you his mind can very easily wander. if you sent him a video or voice message complimenting him or even a video of you rambling about something random he would be able to use that video to get off to. he loves pictures of you looking all pretty as well because he can just let his mind wander and imagine any possible thing while he drags his hand up and down his length.Â
K - kink (one or more of their kinks)Â
mutual masturbation - when you guys are just sitting around at home, sometimes he'll just suggest masturbating together. he feels very close with you and he feels very connected so he would love to get all close and see you make yourself cum right in front of him. sometimes leehan also misses you so much that he needs to call you so that you guys can hear each other. if he's busy at the time he would make time to call you, your voice bringing him comfort. he needs to hear your little whines through the phone and hear how you gasp at the feeling of your own fingers. he would moan out your name quietly too, furrowing his eyebrows and biting at his bottom lip.Â
clothed sex - he loves the desperation of not being able to get fully unclothed before getting your hands all over one another. one of his favorite things is when he can just pull your skirt or shorts to the side and he can just play with you easily like that. no need to get fully unclothed, you're sexy enough even with them on. he really enjoys when you wear easy access clothing for this reason as well because of this. he can easily sit you on his cock without having to do too much in between work because he's sooo impatient sometimes.Â
eye contact - no matter what the two of you are doing, masturbating together, when he's fucking you, when you're giving him head, no matter what it is, he loves eye contact. he searches for your eyes and stares deeply into them when you guys are intimate. it makes him feel even needier, the knot in his stomach grows so much faster when he can see the desperation in your eyes. he loves when he's fucking you so good that you can't even keep your eyes open but he urges you more and more to keep them open, even putting his face in whatever direction you're looking so he can lock eyes with you. he even loves eye contact while you give him head or even when he gives you head, he finds it so intimate and important which is why he loves it so much.
L - location (favorite places to have sex)Â
im not sure why but i feel like he really loves sex on the couch. he loves to try out different ways to fuck you and he'd like having something to lean against. a second favorite would definitely be the kitchen, he loves sitting you on the counter and feeling your legs wrapped around his waist.Â
M - motivation (what turns them on?)Â
i think leehan would really have a thing for lingerie and for inappropriate touching. like if you wear lingerie for him and give him a little peek and touch his thighs or something like that he would get hard so fast. he loves seeing you look all pretty for him. previously i mentioned that he loves easy access clothing, this is another motivation for him. he loves that you're so available for him to love on and appreciate the most intimate parts of your body easily.Â
N - no (Something they wouldnât do)Â
leehan a freak, something he wouldn't do is not give something a chance. he loves to experiment and try out new things so he almost never turns down a new challenge.Â
O - oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc)Â
he honestly loves both, feeling your warm mouth around him and seeing how you look up at him is one of the most rewarding things in the world for him. he can see you on your knees and he thinks you're so pretty like that. he also loves to give you head though, you can easily play in his hair and tug at it which is one of his favorite things. you can also close your legs around his head which he enjoys so so much.Â
P - pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)Â
a lot of times he's on the faster side but he's definitely rough at times. he snaps his hips into you roughly and loves when you can't catch your breath because of the way he's sucking into you. he finds it so sexy when you're sinking your fingers into his skin when he picks up his pace.Â
Q - quickie (their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc.)Â
he loves quickies and u guys have them often because he loves to randomly touch all over you. he's a huge fan of just randomly having sex and then moving on to do something else cuz it's really fun for him.Â
R - risk (are they game to experiment, do they take risks, etc.)Â
super!! a big part of sex for him is discovering new things. when you come to him and ask him to try something new with him he gets so excited and wants to try it immediately. i feel like he would smile so big and would start trying to take ur clothes off as soon as possible.Â
S - stamina (how many rounds can they go for, how long do they lastâŚ)Â
honestly i think leehan can go for quite a few rounds, he does good at keeping up. he can go like 4 rounds regularly because he's a horny guy and also doesn't run out of energy too fast.Â
T - toy (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)Â
i don't think he owns any toys for himself or even for you in general, if he did though i feel like he would have a fleshlight. he loves having something to thrust into so this just makes sense for him, but he much prefers fucking you. he does love toys though, especially when you use them on yourself and could literally just sit there and watch you cum from using a vibrator or something like that.Â
U - unfair (how much they like to tease)Â
always!! teasing!! not even just during sex, sometimes he'll tease you about your moans or about how you reacted to him. he also loves to joke, making you think he's going to expose something about you, only to joke about something else instead. he just loves to see the slight panic that comes over your face sometimes.Â
V - volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make)Â
leehan's pretty quiet during sex, the most noise he makes is usually when he cums. he's big on saying little teases or praises but as far as noises of pleasure he isn't super loud. he'll groan when he's about to cum or when he does come and gets pretty breathy and that's when he let's out little moans as well. i think overall his volume and the projection of his voice is a little louder though, you might not wanna sneak around with him cuz he'll give it away.Â
W - wild card (get a random headcanon for the character of your choice)Â
when you sit in leehanâs lap bouncing up and down on his length heâd press his forehead against yours. i mentioned how much he loves eye contact so it wouldnât be any different here. heâd stare into your eyes, watching the way yours change as you get closer. he also has a thing for when he leans back and his neck is on display for you, he shivers when you wrap your hands around his throat. heâd let out a low groan, his hands gripping at you even harder than before.
X - x-ray (letâs see whatâs going on in those pants)Â
he's definitely on the bigger side. he's got length and girth, definitely the biggest out of the other boys. i think he'd have such a pretty dick, it's probably a little blushy under his tip.Â
Y - yearning (yow high is their sex drive?)Â
it's pretty high, definitely not high like taesan's but i do think he's kinda a sexual person. i just feel like especially with a partner he would have sex on his mind pretty often and he acts on in however he can. whether it's masturbating, calling you for help, or fucking you, he's doing it!Â
Z - zzz (⌠how quickly they fall asleep afterward)
honestly i think he'd fall asleep pretty fast. he'd be all smiley and may mumble to you for a little bit but as soon as he lays on your chest and you start rubbing his back or touching his hair he would doze off so fast. it depends on how he's laying and what you do, as soon as you start loving on him he gets so cozy and falls asleep.

The ot2 travelers don't feel like a found family as much as the ot1 travelers - an analysis
This is probably the boldest opinion I've ever shared on socials for this fandom and I am aware this take will probably get me some hate but I feel like I want to say this and compare the two games under this aspect also to know other people's opinions about this (I feel so brave right now) but I have to make a premise: I loved octopath traveler 2 to death as well as the ot2 travelers, this is not a hate post by any means. Also, the fact that the first game is still more dear to me doesn't make me blind to the fact that ot2 did improve its formula under almost every aspect and is overall of better quality than ot1.
So as I was playing ot2, I felt like it was somehow âmissingâ the same warmth of the first game. Naturally, my first thought was that it was just nostalgia for the first cast, until my boyfriend said the exact same thing to me some time after he started playing ot2. When I asked about it in a small octopath server, almost every response I got was similar to what we were feeling, and many of us pinpointed that the main reason is that the cast doesn't feel as a found family as much as the ot1 cast did, and I'll explain why.
/!\ Spoilers for both games! /!\
The group of travelers in ot2 doesn't feel as cohesive: on the contrary, it often feels like the travelers aren't involved in their friend's adventures as much. They often come off as a bit more individualistic and just casually sharing the same road together while pursuing their own goals. In their banters together, they rarely offer/actively seek each other's help and they generally feel more lonely in their paths
This is kinda ironic given how much more content together the ot2 travelers have, like the crossed paths or the journey for the dawn chapter. The one exception, at least regarding the crossed paths stories, are probably ThronĂŠ and Temenos
The found family trope is more often than not shoved down your throat in a way that's just less effective and more annoying ex. Ochette calling Osvald and Castti mama and papa (or the general imagery of every traveler seeing Castti as their mom when she is just doing her job as a caregiver) or Osvald getting drunk and mistaking Castti and Agnea for his wife and daughter, when Osvald often shows fatherly instincts only towards his actual daughter Elena
The major issue we all agreed on: the travel banters. The main difference is that in ot1 every travelers had a chance to talk to all 7 travelers during each chapter of their story, which actually gave the impression of them traveling together and also the opportunity for a good balance between more lighthearted banters about disparate matters, and deeper banters that explicitly address what's going on in that moment. In ot2 we had the amazing opportunity to reread every banter without missing even one of them, but the amount of banters drastically reduced! Which left me kinda confused!! Because for every chapter, only a few travelers get to talk with the one progressing through a chapter. And that leaves place for an awkward silence on the other travelers' behalf, because it does almost deliver the vibe that they're just observing quietly, or that they don't care enough about what's happening to intervene. That silence takes a big toll on how believably the concept of found family is delivered, in my opinion. We don't really need 70% of the banters to be about card games, fashion, hobbies and food (why are there so many banters about food lol) when the actually deep/important matters barely get addressed by the other travelers.
An example: the apothecaries' chapters 3. They both are very emotionally heavy chapters, where both Alfyn and Castti are having a really rough time. Having the chance to talk to all 7 of his friends, Alfyn not only gets to talk about his job as an apothecary and joke with Therion about getting drunk at the tavern, but he also receives important advice and active help from his teammates. Like Olberic, for example, you can almost picture him holding Alfyn's shoulder in the attempt of getting him to calm down
Whereas in Castti's chapter 3, she goes through one of the most painful and heartbreaking moments of her life (remembering what happened to Malaya and the Apothecaries) and barely anyone comforts her. You only get Temenos saying "you can count of me" and Hikari, saying more or less the same thing. No Osvald talking to her about dealing with the grief of losing everything?? No Agnea and Partitio reassuring her, telling her she did what she could and that it was not her fault?? No ThronĂŠ sharing with her the relief of freedom, of finally being free from her amnesia?? ... That does feel like a huge missed opportuniy and really makes it look like the other 5 travelers are just observing in silence, and that really ruins the immersion to me. They do feel more lonely and less of a family, no matter how many times Ochette calls her "mom" , she wasn't there for Castti when she needed it. She didn't say anything. The effort made by their crossed paths story isnât enough to make up for it to me
Not only that, but ot1 is full of other examples of the travelers actively seeking each other's help: Olberic is constantly asking for his teammates' opinions because he trusts them (Olberic ch4, Cyrus banter) and offering his protection in return, Tressa and Therion often value each other's advice, and many other cases.
Final point: this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but I couldn't help but feel my opinion reinforced by the promoting team's choices; in every piece of art for the first Octopath Traveler game anniversary, all 8 travelers were featured. As they should be! OCTO is in the name, after all. None of them is more important than the others, and it's crucial to me that in their anniversary art they ALL get featured. Well, for the first anniversary of the Octopath Traveler 2 release the official promotional art only featured Temenos and Crick. One (1) traveler and a npc. Well done, that's how you don't want to celebrate your game's 1 year anniversary when the main feature of the game in question is that it's a collective story that features 8 characters. Yes I am not blind I am aware of Temenos and Crick's popularity as both individual characters and as a ship (which by the way I am very neutral about so again, no hate), but my god that official art did leave a bitter taste in my mouth as soon as I saw it. Like really? What about the other 7 travelers? Aren't they supposed to be a found family?
So in the end I think the missing travel banters are what makes the ot2 crew feel a bit more distant and less of a family to me, and the crossed paths and Journey for the dawn really, really struggle to make up for this because the basics of the relationship between the travelers just arenât quite there.
Now I know this game is dear to many, me included, and that many others may have the complete opposite opinion, and that's okay. We can talk about it! I love hearing different opinions.
Peace! âď¸
#octopath traveler#octopath traveler 2#sly rambles#I KNOW this is a controversial opinion and may be very subjective#it really depends on what you value more in a found family dynamic

Hello. Hi. I'm your resident rancher shipper here. How's everyone doing. I heard someone say something about less common ships and honestly 100% support that. I fully support flower court (Jimmy, Tango, Scott, Martyn) and any of the not as common ones are great.
I don't see much for Jimmy/Martyn so here's a headcanon. Jimmy likes to threaten people but doesn't really go through with the threats or fails at them. Martyn would complete those threats. He's Martyn. I get the vibe that he thrives off chaos and he loves it.
As for Scott/Tango (snow bugs) I think that Scott would just fully support Tango's rage moments. Like he was when the ranch burned down. Pretty sure Scott was onw of the people telling Tango to just go kill the pandas. I could see them both also being very protective over eachother even tho they both know the other doesn't need it.
For Tango/Martyn (FireWood I think they're called?) Martyn would, once again, help Tango with his revenge plans but he'd plan it out a little more. Like when the ranch burned down, I could totally see Martyn, not calming tango down but making sure he has a better plan than storming up there and just killing the pandas. He would also then help with said plans because why wouldn't he.
Martyn/Scott would kill and betray everyone around them until they decided upon a winner then would probably just do simple pvp to end it and see who wins. I could also see them both going to separate teams but still staying loyal to eachother just to see who has better resources and stuff. They're both little manipulators but we love them anyway.
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk. If anyone has any questions or want to hear me spout about more traffic ships I am more than willing to go off about any and all of them.
<3
Jimmy holds back his husbands when they get mad
Jimmy: sorry they are just a little upset Martyn, Tango, Scott: JIMMY WE CRAVE BLOOD

Idk if this will be helpful to anyone but a list of techniques I would use:
Confine the multipronoun character to one paragraph, and change paragraphs when another character speaks/is described/does something, noting the new character's name before switching to pronouns
Avoid dialogue tags altogether and focus on making the dialogue more obvious with heavy characterization and solid structure that makes who's speaking clear. Then later on you can sprinkle in some dialogue tags as looks appropriate once the reader grasps the character well enough to know what they would say in a certain situation
Use at least one neopronoun or singular they and use it in situations where the other character has the same pronoun but using names is way too clumsy
Probably don't switch within the same sentence (or don't make a habit of it). Unless you're committed to creating a multi pronoun user's dream come true narrative, it's difficult to follow because instinctively you're thinking "oh this is a new character." Much easier to describe them doing verb and then character continuing that verb with a different pronoun in the following sentence
Don't draw attention to it if you're not aiming to do that, it'll look sloppy instead of authentic to life. I've seen some authors make a big point of clashingly putting pronouns together and it's just not natural. Especially when other characters are speaking about them- even if someone is super good with using them equally, they often talk using one pronoun for one conversation/one day/etc and definitely at least for one sentence. But the MOST important thing about this is that people don't usually use pronouns for someone in front of them. So making a bunch of excuses for someone to refer to someone as if they're not there looks weird. Which could be the vibe you're going for- maybe you're writing a piece about gender and want it to smack you right in the face every sentence. But if you're trying to make it blend into the background it will not help to make a point of putting two different pronouns in the same sentence/same paragraph/same interaction with other characters.
Have pronouns that make sense to you. It can be difficult to juggle atypical neopronouns for you at the same time as trying to do multi pronouns for the character. Typing "him" instead of "his" on accident for example makes it even harder to read, and multi pronouns are already hard enough to read as it is (<- should not be smug about this, but is, because he don't have multiple pronouns because it's easy)
Context!!! This one is the most obvious but it really helps.
You can loosen up the further into the narrative you are because they'll be able to guess based on how the character is behaving and characterization.
Example:
Carin tapped his foot irately, becoming the human personification of anxiety. The clock said they were ten minutes late, and the time on his phone said twenty. If they didn't show up soon he was just going to-
The bell chimed and they stepped into the room, telescoping the umbrella with a SNAP! that could barely be heard over the chatter in the coffee shop. The noise didn't abate at all when they entered and the bell chimed again as the door fell shut.
"It's about damn time," he said. Worry creased his brow.
They looked like they were going to apologize and thought better of it. "I don't see what the rush is."
She rolled her eyes. "I told you, we have a deadline."
"So you've said. Like five times." They sounded more amused than stressed now that they were in the shop and out of the rain. The umbrella folded up into a little tube, one of those tiny ones you could get at target. They flagged down the barista.
He groaned. "Do we really have time for coffee?"
"Hi! I'll have a latte, and xie will have an cappuccino."
The barista looked at xir warily, but shrugged xir off. She looked a bit stressed herself since the place was packed with people trying to escape the downpour. Okay, a lot stressed. But the thought of that was making xim feel bad so xie tried not to think about it. [Alternatively: The barista looked at her warily, but shrugged her off. She looked a bit stressed herself since the place was packed with people trying to escape the downpour. Okay, a lot stressed. But thinking about the barista's situation was making her feel bad so she tried not to think about it.]
"Will that be for here or to go?"
"To go. Thanks."
The sound of change made her eyebrow twitch.
"You didn't have to-"
"You looked like you could use a coffee. Now. The deadline?" They asked, leaning their hip against the counter near the WAIT HERE FOR YOUR COFFEE :) sign.
He breathed a sigh of relief.
ok i brought this up in a discord server already but i'm gonna ask this here as well for maximum coverage
when writing characters who use multiple pronouns, what's the best way to avoid confusion?
no i'm not making this a poll as the answers are bound to be a lot more nuanced than a multiple choice question can do justice lmao

Iâm trying to get a handle on Jason as a character. I got a great answer on Jason and Tim from @ultimate-marysue but they directed me to you as the Jason Todd expert. Iâm wondering about Jason and Damian now. Do they interact at all in canon? Are they friendly/friends, typical brothers, enemies, or just acquaintances? Or do they just ignore each other?
I hope you can give me an answer. Thanks either way!
Oh goodness, that's because @ultimate-marysue is an absolute sweetheart but unfortunately my Jason knowledge is far from exhaustive, especially when it comes to Jason and Damian since some of their relationship happens in, um, unfortunate comics that are hard for me to get through (they probably say that because I study developmental psychopatholgy and do in-depth analysis about jason through that length rather than exhaustive lore-knowledge).
Sorry to toss you around like a pingpong ball, but I know @daisybell-on-a-carousel is currently trying to read through every single one of Jason's apparitions in comics (godspeed), so depending of where they're at in the comics they're definitely the one to ask for stuff like that in general. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who posts a lit of lore/meta about Damian and Jason's relationship, but I do know @spicy-apple-pie loves Damian a lot and does really sweet comics so idk if they can help you but at the very least if they can't you'll get to read some cute comics.
The little I know about Jason and Damian's relationship:
-Jason and Damian's first meeting, from what I've gathered, is either from Battle for the Cowl (brutally butchers Jason's character, my second least favourite ever if I could go back in time to stop Tony Daniel from writing it I would), in which Jason shoots Damian in the chest, or Morrison's Batman & Robin run (somehow even more hated by the fans than Daniel, Morrison has admitted later to just not liking Jason's character. According to a survey I'm running these two are in the top three of worst Jason writers, but Morrison has a bonus of also butchering Talia's character to an unfathomable level and I don't know if I like his Damian very much either.) in that run (which is Dickbats with robin!Damian) Jason is portrayed as the classic "crazy evil villain" bs and making Dick his sworn-enemy apparently (he's more of a plot device than anything imo). So, we're off to a great start.
-The issue is, with the reboot, I find it pretty hard to clarify for some events which ones are still canon or not. The current state of dc comics is pushing the batfam conception more than ever before, with Jason back in the family (something that vaguely happened off-screen in the n52) and neither jason, dick, tim, damian nor anybody else seems to reference or resent anything about that despite how cartoonishly evil jason was in those so I think it's implied that they're not canon anymore (and I hope they stay this way and buried under twenty layers of retcon). However I don't think I've heard or seen any mention of a different first meeting for them so there's this shadow area of yeah btfc and morrison's jason probably didn't happen but then what did?
-currently as I said dc (ie tom king amongst others) pushes for a very "classical family batfam vibe" so they're on panel/on missions together but i haven't heard of them having arcs together in mainline (people who know more than me please feel free to correct me in the notes, in general but also if there's more about this specifically). I'm getting "siblings that don't really like eachother but don't hate eachother either vibes", especially on Damian's part. It's really not the most developed relationship in the batfam, of that I'm sure.
-for many people I've seen that their favourite damian and jason comic is juni ba's boy wonder volume 2. It isn't canon in mainline (and not my favourite jason characterization tbh) but since the two of them don't seem to interact that much in canon and the story is pretty popular and feels kinda parallel-ish to canon I get why people would consider it their reference. Also it has pretty sick designs for the both of them which certainly doesn't hurt.
-in the young justice show, a brainwashed/brain damaged(?) Jason is shown holding a baby Damian in his arms. This has no incidence on any dc comics canon but is extremely cute and therefore worth mentioning.
