I always thought that Yu Ziyuan and her best friend, Madam Jin, both made a pact to marry well (wealth over love). While Madam Jin was closing in on Jin Guangshan, Yu Ziyuan began pursuing Jiang Fengmian.

However, the closer she got to the sweet Sect Leader, the more she realized that his story wasn't so simple. She found out that when he went to night hunt with his best friends, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, that it was more or less code for a snogfest out in the wilds (or a private room on rainy nights).

Maybe she found out when her own hunting party 'accidentally' ran across their party and found out what they were really up to. Therefore, after some goading from her friend, she decided that to cement herself into the sect hierarchy, she would need to play his game.

Eventually, she inserted herself into their threesome, making an exciting polyamory group. And, for awhile, Yu Ziyuan actually enjoyed their wild night hunts together, that was both vicious to the copses and generous to a youthful, lustful needs. Although, Yu Ziyuan had to do some convincing (and manipulation) to get Jiang Fengmian to marry her instead of Cangse Sanren.

After the wedding, things changed. Yu Ziyuan decided that she wouldn't let Wei Changze touch her anymore to make sure she produced an honest Jiang heir. Slowly, over the years, bitterness replaced elegant joy, and jealousy replaced mutual cooperation between the four.

Jiang Fengmian was honestly considering divorce until Yu Ziyuan announced her pregnancy with their first born. Soon, all thoughts of leaving her left him.

But all was not well, when a woman was not a proper heir to the Jiangs, and though Jiang Yanli was well loved, Yu Ziyuan needed a son to secure herself in the Jiang household.

Things were okay for awhile until Cangse Sanren announced her own pregnancy a few years later. This was just after the four of them had knitted their relationship again, only for it to shatter again when Yu Ziyuan's insecurities cropped up.

Who's son was it? Was it Wei Changze's or Jiang Fengmian's? None of them were absolutely sure, but no one else seemed to care except Yu Ziyuan.

If it was Jiang Fengmian's son, then would he bring Changse Sanren in as a consort? Would this replace her importance in the sect because she didn't produce a male heir.

With the backhanded help of Madam Jin, Yu Ziyuan was finally able to break up the polyamorous relationship, and even tore Jiang Fengmian away from the others. Soon after, she produced her own son, Jiang Cheng, and convinced the others to leave Lotus Pier to protect the bloodline.

In the end, none of the four actually knew who Wei Wuxian's father was, and this created a bitterness in Yu Ziyuan's heart that could not be mended, especially after Jiang Fengmian took in the boy as a son.
