Carmen Anthony Berzatto is a cat person through and through. they just gravitate to him and he doesn't even have to try. even the meanest of cats…they just stick to him.

“She doesn’t like people,” you tell Carmen on the way in. “You might see her, but she won’t come near you.”

Which is usually true of your cat. Any time you have people over, she goes into hiding—in your bedroom, under the couch, hidden in the nooks and crannies of your apartment. It’s the first time Carmen’s here after a handful of chats over the phone and mid-day dates-that-aren’t-officially-dates, and you’re not quite sure what it is that’s going on between you, but you’d hate for it to be ruined by a poor encounter with Ramona.

So when you leave him on the couch as you head to the bathroom, you’ve got your fingers crossed that he’s at least half a good listener. You don’t need another potential whatever Carmen is getting scratched up. You don’t think you can handle the embarrassment again.

Coming back to the couch, though, you find him hunched over with a soft smile on his face, and Ramona—the cat who infamously hates everybody but you—snuggling up to the back of his tattooed hand.

You don’t think as much as you should before the thought slips out: “What the fuck?”

Carmen turns his attention toward you, smiling, though his hand still hangs gently above the cushion where Ramona stands using it to pet herself. “Hey.”

“I was gone for less than ten minutes.” But you can’t stifle the grin blooming on your face as you come to sit next to him, curling up with the cat between you as you smooth your hand along her back.

And the antisocial freak of a feline purrs. Another person is touching her, and she’s happy about it.

What the fuck is happening? Is this even my cat?

“She was weavin’ through my legs before she hopped up here,” he explains. “Crept out from under the chair ‘n walked right over.” His gaze flits between you and Ramona, gentle and considerate when he curls a finger to rub her forehead and between her ears. 

You hum, caught in a bit of disbelief. Your chest is warmer than it was before, and you’re keenly aware of Carmen’s arm stretched along the back of the couch behind you.

“Thought you said she doesn’t like people?”

“She doesn’t,” you insist, voice quiet and much more intimate than intended. You keep watching as her body slinks from beneath your palm to encourage him to do the same. Glancing up with a smile, you meet Carmen’s eye and lean in a little closer without thinking. “She must like you.”

“Hm.” He offers a kind yet skeptical chuckle, dimples on display. The cat lays down now, right up against his thigh. “Guess so.”

It’s not that you blame her, of course. It’s hard not to feel the same about him—especially now.

And when you put on a movie, and his hand slips from the back of the couch to brush tenderly along your shoulder, the cat sleeping peacefully shared between your laps, you realize you might like him more than you thought you would.

Maybe Ramona knows a thing or two.

Well since I'm slerpdeprived and thinking about "what's worse than two parents with issues? THREE parents with issues"

The interesting thing about the "Cain/Abel are Lucifer's child" theories is that genetically speaking it doesn't even matter. The children are made of Eve's egg and Lucifer's sperm. Eve was made from Adam's rib (assuming that the show will follow that canon?), she's made from him DNA, she's genetically his clone.

So Cain/Abel COULD be tested for the parenthood test thing and chances are they'll always match with Adam since they'll match with Eve.

So if it were to be used as a type of "gotcha, not my real dad" Adam probably wouldn't acknowledge it because not only did he raise them in life, the DNA test matches with him too.

Nevermind that he only knew his kids (who either died and went to hell, or were cursed to wander and lived for centuries, had nomad kids etc, THEN died and went to hell, assuming that that's where Cain is ofc) for like 0.05% of their existence.

Which btw, thinking about the weight and realistic importance of familial bonds forged in earth is very interesting in the context of the afterlife, especially when it comes to ancient souls. I would care who my mom/dad was in 50 years, 150 years, perhaps 500 years, but would I care in 1000 years? I suppose I would acknowledge them in title but after centuries of being an independent adult, wouldn't that change the perceived hierarchy in pretty much any relationship?

That was a tangent but it does go back to what I was originally saying:

Really it's in Cain and/or Abel's best interest that such a test is never taken. ALL it would accomplish is earn them another adult with baggage in their lives and who wants that when you're essentially as old as your human parents (give it take 5 to 20 years depending on how you think the whole Eden thing played out), as old as agriculture, older than civilization etc.

(that's of course grounds for conflict which could be interesting... You're one half of the oldest pair of tragic twins in the history of humanity, you've been a soul for longer than you were human, you kind of have other things going on... Why are your earthly parents still beefing with the devil? In true "I'm an adult and it's made me very judgemental of my parents' unaddressed immaturity", they should be like. Literally who cares. Dude I mean Dad (Adam) are you SURE you don't want to try therapy?)

Like really their only motivation may be to have a claim to the throne of hell or something but assuming that hell laws work as they do in human culture, Eve's kids would be "bastards" so they wouldn't be next in line.

If not political power, there's always the possibility of fucking up spectacularly with a series of bad deals and now they really need to have access to the Morningstar funds or be in the will or something, but hm idk. On the fence about this idea. I suppose it could be executed in an interesting way.

When and in what order to the rest of the recoms start considering the Spelling siblings 'one of their own' ?

first was lyle, cause he's lyle, he's here for a good time not a long time, and he thinks the siblings are fun. if quaritch trusts them, he trusts them. if quaritch treats them like his own, he's gonna follow.

second was Zdog, though she's more hesitant to show it; she heard them plotting threats against ardmore and knew she liked them. she reluctantly mothers them (calls them morons while also throwing water at them or aggressively forcing them to let her wrap their wounds, type vibes) and joins in on their plotting (she hates ardmore with a passion, she's a bitch). I think zdog was one of those people back on earth that wanted kids, maybe not as like a lifelong goal, but as a passive thought, but then she joined the RDA and earth go worse and that idea went from the backburner to the trashcan. so to have an opportunity to take care of some kids is welcome no matter how much of a hardass she had become in her time as a soldier/mercenary (I don't know her exact position, pre or post-war outside of being a recom)

third was fike and ja (I will never not see them like a bonded pair of cats, so I feel like they would accept the siblings together), they were unsure at first, cause the siblings are a lot and every time they thought they fully understood them they would find another dozen layers to them. but eventually they find that the siblings are both fun but trustworthy and good kids. I think they're like lyle, but more cautious, they don't have the bond with quaritch that would let them accept the kids just because he did.

and lastly, mansk; I don't think he bonded last for any specific reason, he just doesn't like making connections, so it just takes more time or him. he survived by staying apathetic and disconnected, so he tried to continue that with the kids, but they did eventually worm his way into his heart.
