Hearing about how some contestants of the Squid Game reality show are suing Netflix because the alleged injuries and hyperthermia they got while filming challenges is not even surprising.
We all saw this coming as soon as the show was announced.

Squid Game a TV show that critiqued the horrors capitalism and exploitation by having desperate people compete in warped deadly kids game while the disgustingly wealthy 1% watch and make bets. To witness so many people miss the point was astounding.

While the Torment Nexus from Don't Create The Torment Nexus could be criticized for being unnecessary and inefficient, an often under analyzed subtext is the fact that the titular Torment Nexus is not even good at maximizing suffering. In this essay I will

To give you an idea how non-universal our experiences can be, I was just in a science and technology studies seminar where one of my fellow graduate students was talking about how often tech people in Silicon Valley and elsewhere just take their cues from science fiction about what technologies would or should exist in the future. And I said, "But of course, there's also the 'torment nexus' problem."
And they all looked at me blankly.
"You know...the torment nexus?"
Anyways, I needed to describe the "torment nexus" tweet for them, because none of them had seen it.

I think one of many things that gets lost in discussion is that, generally, the author of "Having A Mutually Consensual And Satisfying Sexual Encounter With The Torment Nexus; An Erotic Story About Wanting To Fuck The Torment Nexus And Then Doing So" is generally the person at the very front of the crowd, with a megaphone, saying "DO NOT BUILD THE TORMENT NEXUS." turns out that if you're invested enough in a Problematic Kink to write at length about it you have probably spent a LOT of time thinking about the harm it does in reality, and your work's relationship to that. almost as if, somehow, actually thinking about complex and dangerous stuff, instead of priding yourself on the purity of never letting a thought about it enter your mind, makes you better equipped to understand that stuff. how odd.

Sometimes, I feel like people might misinterpret the "Don't Create the Torment Nexus" memes.
Many make posts and jokes about it, thinking it means "we have infamous pieces of literature telling you why creating the Torment Nexus is a bad idea, and yet you created it anyway."
Technically, what these memes are supposed to mean is "someday, someone is going to create the Torment Nexus. I'm not being cautionary in telling you to stop them, because the creation of the Torment Nexus is pretty much a fixed point in the future, so the least I could do is to tell you how to brace for it".

Like, yes, you can say that in many cases the Torment Nexus’s real problems are as much the capitalist society existing around it as the Nexus itself BUT even if you’re right, as long as we still currently have a capitalist society like our current one maybe don’t invent the torment nexus? Maybe hold off on that bit of science?
Just a bit?
