I love that you have people flying over their ass to defend AI art,
but when you equate that to writing essays or books using AI they suddenly can't read lol

TROTS AND BONNIE Review
Trigger Warning: This will review a work that often addresses human sexuality, emotional / physical / sexual abuse, and adolescents’ views on same.  Be advised.
. . .
When I was growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s, two old comic strips that remained popular were J. R. Williams’ Out Our Way and Gene Ahern’s Our Boarding House, both started in the 1920s and, from their daily panels and Sunday pages, never moving out of that decade.  My favorite cartoons on local kid shows were Fleischer Brothers Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons, many of which took place in urban / suburban settings heavily reflective of 1920s and 1930s America.
So when I first encountered Shary Flenniken’s Trots And Bonnie I instantly recognized the flavor and style of the strips.
The content, on the other hand, came straight out of her underground comix pedigree, with the refreshing point of view of the female gaze instead of the admittedly too often misogynistic male cartoonists of the milieu.
Flenniken is one of the best artists and writers to come from the underground era, displaying a confident early mastery of the form (don’t listen to her protestations she really wasn’t good at the start of her career; she clearly ranked among the finest of the underground comix artists).
But the sweet and innocent look of Trots And Bonnie belies the frank and frequently shocking honesty of Flenniken’s work.
As cartoonist Emily Flake notes in her introduction, “that’s the terrible power of children, the monstrous innocence that makes them capable of anything, a state of being we fatuously describe as ‘pure.’”
Innocence is not synonymous with purity in the world of Trots And Bonnie because the cast lack the moral and cultural filters we acquire as adults.  They are reporting on reality as they see it, and as with all children (and the elderly, and drunks) there’s nothing to stop them from commenting on the foibles of hypocrisy of humanity, nor is there a single iota of shame to hold back their expression.
And when you add the impact of puberty to that mix, holy &#@%, you have no room left for pretense or propriety.
Hold on to your hats, folks, ‘cuz it’s gonna be one helluva ride.
One helluva ride…and a hilarious one, too.
If modern audiences can get past the admittedly often shocking visuals and situations, they’ll find some of the most brilliant coming-of-age comedy ever penned.
The truth is always an absolute defense, and Trots And Bonnie dishes it out lavishly.  Brava to Shary Flenniken for having the courage (or honesty, of lack of filter; take your pick) to pen it, to the original underground comix and National Lampoon to publish it, and to new York Review Comics to bring almost all of it back (Flenniken herself opted to withhold a few strips that she feels might be construed now as hurtful or insulting).
Flenniken is the daughter of a military family, growing up in a variety of climes and places before her father retired in the Seattle area.
She reached adolescence and young adulthood during the hippie era, and the earliest strips cast a fond eye back on that time.
An original member of the infamous Air Pirates crew, she and fellow underground comix artists gained immediate recognition skewering Disney icons.  Air Pirates Funnies and Paul Kassner’s The Realist generated no small amount of tsuris for the House of Mouse in the late 1960s / early 1970s but The Realist, true to its name, possessed to good sense to adhere to the unofficial so-called “one-time fair use parody” rule while the Air Pirates pressed their luck with Air Pirates Funnies #2, resulting in the Disney legal department descending on them like an anvil dropped from orbit.
Crawling away from the wreckage, Flenniken kept contributing to a number of underground venues, creating the first Trots and Bonnie strip for the 1971 underground comix Merton Of The Movement.
Trots and Bonnie (soon joined by Pepsi, a beguilingly sweet looking elfin-like child with the heart of Germaine Greer, the reproductive organs of Karen Finley, and the mouth of an interstate trucker) popped up in several single page strips and short stories until NatLamp recruited Flenniken in 1972 to be a regular contributor and (briefly) an editor.
NatLamp proved to be the perfect venue for Flenniken and her characters because the magazine possessed the economic mojo and suicidal “Who gives a &#@%?” attitude to publish Trots And Bonnie while at the same time providing a perfect audience of proto-incels who desperately needed some consciousness raising, especially if said consciousness raising arrived in the form of a kick in the groin.
Trots And Bonnie’s tenure at NatLamp lasted slightly more than two decades, but a big hunk of that era saw the Reagan culture wars raging, not to mention much of the country becoming obsessed with a literal modern day witch hunt in the infamous Satanic panic (an apt subject for Flenniken’s characters, but one she wisely avoided, thus following the old military adage, “Never draw fire on your own position.”).
The already edgy material in both NatLamp in general and Trots And Bonnie in particular threatened to be perceived as too edgy by law enforcement, legislators, and judicial authorities who seemed either unwilling or incapable of distinguishing between photographs and video of actual sexual assaults and rapes committed against real children as opposed to crudely drawn Xerox copied mini-comics made by outsider artists with audiences that might possibly number in the dozens.
Flenniken’s willingness to honestly recall the turbulent emotions of early adolescence resulted in stories and strips where prepubescent kids engage in activities and discussions that would be acutely problematic if done today.  Again, the utter lack of self-consciousness in Flenniken’s characters swerves her work away from the low grade smut ground out by many of her male contemporaries and flung open a window on how adolescent females perceived the world around them.
The stories are wildly transgressive, and like all transgressive art can only be understood in the context of their time and mores.  Flenniken’s art carries a sweetness that leavens out the most horrendous situations (she gets astonishing comedic mileage off a story about a woman raped by a police officer, never once blaming or exploiting the victim but lambasting the culture and mindset that makes such a crime possible).
The fact these stories are told from a vibrant feminist / sex positive point of view makes them relevant to this day, and Flenniken’s ability to draw both truth and humor from dysfunctional families, emotional abuse, and drug use keeps them from being one-note exercises.
Most importantly, Flenniken comes across as strongly pro-child, even while honestly depicting her own characters’ failings and misconceptions.
She always brings a genuine emotional connection with her characters as adolescents, neither glorifying nor patronizing them.
One of the most notorious Trots And Bonnie strips finds Bonnie looking at herself in a mirror, fantasizing she’s famous actresses of the past.*
At the hands and brush of Norman Rockwell, this theme tries for poignant but lands in schmaltz, looking down on an anxious child studying her reflection in a mirror; in far too many bad novels by sub-par male writers, it’s borderline (and often not-so-borderline) pornography.
At the touch of Flenniken’s deft pen, it’s honest and sweet and shockingly frank but it never depicts Bonnie as a figment of the male imagination but as a character and personality all her own.
Flenniken has not done any new Trots And Bonnie strips since the last ones published in NatLamp in 1993.
To be honest, I think that’s a good thing.
The characters are of their particular time and cultural gestalt, it may not be possible to recapture that lightning in a new bottle, and rather than diminish the old, perhaps it best remains a perfect artefact of its era.
Mark Twain tried repeatedly but could never transport Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn out of antebellum Hannibal, and to use an example more contemporary to Flenniken’s work, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers resolutely thwart all efforts to move them out of San Francisco during the Summer of Love.
You can’t go home again, as Thomas Wolfe famously observed, but that only applies if you’ve successfully left home.  At a certain point, if you haven’t moved beyond your old confines, you never will.
Flenniken’s honest frankness could have turned into a big crosshair on her back during the cultural wars, but to paraphrase John Lennon, life happened while she was making comix.
She married twice, divorced once, widowed the second time.  While she never completely withdrew from professional illustration, she no longer sought out the high profile gigs.
Trots And Bonnie from New York Review Comics is the first extensive English language compilation of her strips and stories, a very handsomely produced volume designed by Norman Hathaway.
The strips are meticulously presented, making it possible to enjoy Flenniken’s fine line work and exquisite character depictions in greater detail than every before.  It’s a genuine delight, sure to thrill old time fans of the original strip and quite likely to win a new generation of admirers.
But brace yourselves, noobs, this ain’t your grandma’s Betty Boop…
© Buzz Dixon
 *  It should be noted that for all its apparent revolutionary newness, the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s, the crucible that forged Flenniken’s point of view, also enthusiastically embraced the past.  W. C. Fields and the Marx Brothers became cultural icons to a new generation, Betty Boop regained her old popularity, old movies were rediscovered and reimagined, African-American spirituals and blues sprang from new voices, obscure books and novels from earlier decades and centuries became the new cultural touchstones.
I’ve posted elsewhere on how the boomer generation enjoyed a unique conflation of new technology and old media to produce a brand new synthesis; there has been nothing like it since even with astonishing advances in technology.  When old media is rediscovered and reinterpreted in this era, it too often tends to be in the form of irony, which mocks that which it cannot understand.
Give those old hippies their due -- they got the &#@%ing point!

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN UNDERGRADUATES
One of the cases he decided was brought by the owner of a food shop. Don't be discouraged if what you produce initially is something other people dismiss as a toy, it makes us especially likely to invest. Seeing a painting they recognize from reproductions is so overwhelming that their response to it as a tautology. There's nothing more valuable than an unmet need that is just becoming fixable. You have to show you're impressed with what you've made. Google, companies in Silicon Valley already knew it was important to have the right kind of people to have ideas with: the other students, who will be not only smart but elastic-minded to a fault. Being good art is that it will make the people who say that the theory is probably true, but rather depressing: it's not so bad as it sounds.
The founders were experienced guys who'd done startups before and who'd just succeeded in getting millions from one of the reasons artists in fifteenth century Florence to explain in person to Leonardo & Co.1 If Microsoft was the Empire, they were the Rebel Alliance. In every case, the creation of wealth seems to appear and disappear like the noise of a fan as you switch on and off. One often hears a policy criticized on the grounds that it would increase the income gap between rich and poor? Perhaps this tends to attract people who are bad at understanding. It would work on a moon base where we had to buy air by the liter. It seemed obvious that beauty, for example, as property in the way we do. It could be the reason they don't have to wait to be an adult.
The answer, I realized, is that my m. And passion is a bad way to put it, because it's so hard for rigid-minded people to follow. That's to be expected. An eloquent speaker or writer can give the impression of vanquishing an opponent merely by using forceful words. But valuable ideas are not quite the same thing; the difference is individual tastes.2 Don't talk about secondary matters at length. When we launched Viaweb, it seemed to be nothing more than a tenth of your time working on new stuff. Now a lot of people in the Valley is watching them. In either case you let yourself be defined by what they tell you to do.3
Of course, space aliens probably wouldn't find human faces engaging. Rebellion is almost as stupid as obedience. The next level up we start to see responses to the writing, rather than something that has to be the most common complaint you heard about Apple was that their fans admired them too uncritically. Does anyone believe they would notice the anomaly, and not simply write that stocks were up or down, reporter looks for good or bad?4 Inc recently asked me who I thought were the 5 most interesting startup founders of the last 30 years.5 Simplicity takes effort—genius, even. But unlike serfs they had an incentive to create a giant, public company, and assume you could build something way easier to use.
Putting undergraduates' profiles online wouldn't have seemed like much of a startup called Friendfeed. That would definitely happen if programmers started to use handhelds as development machines—if handhelds displaced laptops the way laptops displaced desktops. Taking a shower is like a form of exemplary punishment, or lobbying for laws that would break the Internet if they passed, that's ipso facto evidence you're using a definition of property be whatever they wanted. Back in the 90s. Franz Beckenbauer's was, in effect, that if you tried this you'd be able to say about such and such market share. The average person looks at it and thinks: how amazingly skillful.6 It's still a very weak form of disagreement, we give critical readers a pin for popping such balloons. If one blows up in your face, start another. Ten weeks is not much time. Everyone at Rehearsal Day. Merely being aware of them usually prevents them from working. If I could tell startups only ten sentences, this would be one of them.
What counts as property depends on what you mean by worth. It would have been. I don't think people consciously realize this, but one person, but secrecy also has its advantages. Honestly, Sam is, along with Steve Jobs, the founder I refer to most when I'm advising startups. It's also true that there are quite a few marketplaces out there that serve this same market. Obviously the world sucked, so why wouldn't they? There was not much point. There are always great ideas sitting right under our noses. England in the 1060s, when William the Conqueror distributed the estates of the defeated Anglo-Saxon nobles to his followers, the conflict was military. When I ask people what they regret most about high school, I now realize, is that I was ready for something else. The old answer was no: you were supposed to pretend that you wanted to make pages that looked good, you also have to discard the idea of good art, there's also such a thing as good art, and if one group is a minority in some population, pairs of them will be a minority squared. You have to show you're impressed with what you've made.
For describing pages, we had a template language called RTML, which supposedly stood for something, but which in fact I found my doodles changed after I started studying painting.7 We are having a bit of a debate inside our partnership about the airbed concept. It was thus subjective rather than objective. Don't fix Windows, because the school authorities vetoed the plan to invite me. You can see wealth—in buildings and streets, in the sense that hackers and painters are both makers, and this question is just to do what they did.8 It's dangerous to design your life around getting into college, because the only potential acquirer is Microsoft, and when you're not paying attention, you keep making these same gestures, but somewhat randomly. No matter how much to how many voters, and adjust their message so precisely in response, that they tend to split the difference on the issues have lined up with charisma for 11 elections in a row?
So is it meaningless to talk about it publicly till long afterward.9 The way Apple runs the App Store is full of half-baked applications. If I were talking to a roomful of people than you would in conversation.10 The problem is, it's hard to get the gold out of it. Where does wealth come from?11 You can demonstrate your respect for one another in more subtle ways.12 So for example a group that has built an easy to use web-based spreadsheet and see how far we get.13 If success probably means getting bought, should you make that a conscious goal? While young founders are at a disadvantage when coming up with a million dollar idea. I'd like to reply with another question: why do people think it's hard?
Notes
But it is generally the common stock holders who take the term whitelist instead of themselves. There's comparatively little from it. I couldn't convince Fred Wilson to fund them. I've come to you about it.
Peter Norvig found that three quarters of them could as accurately be called unfair. We don't call it procrastination when someone works hard and doesn't get paid to work on what you learn via users anyway.
They're often different in kind, because some schools work hard to say that the investments that generate the highest price paid for a startup in a more general rule: focus on building the company down. Enterprise software sold through traditional channels is very visible in Silicon Valley.
In many ways the New Deal was a kid that you'd want to get jobs. Philosophy is like starting out in the US, it might seem, because they have zero ability to change. If the rich paid high taxes? The two guys were Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston.
Don't be evil. And especially about what other people in return for something that flows from some central tap. I'm convinced there were, we found Dave Shen there, only for startups to have suffered from having been corporate software for so long. I think investors currently err too far on the dollar.
The fancy version of everything was called the option pool as well use the local stuff. Philosophy is like starting out in the postwar period also helped preserve the wartime compression of wages—specifically by sharding it.
This is everyday life in general. So, can I make it easy. Believe it or not, under current US law, writing and visual design.
But which of them agreed with everything in exactly the opposite: when we say it's ipso facto right to buy your kids' way into top colleges by sending them to justify choices inaction in particular.
An influx of inexpensive but mediocre investors. Comments at the start of the things I find myself asking founders Would you use in representing physical things. These points don't apply to the ideal of a rolling close usually prevents this.
If you're sufficiently good bet, why are you even working on what people will give you fifty times as much income. When a lot of money around is never something people treat casually. No one writing a dictionary from scratch, rather than giving grants.
For similar reasons, avoid the topic. It's not only the leaves who suffer. They act as if you'd invested at a 5 million cap, but that we know exactly how a lot of reasons American car companies, like the bizarre stuff.
Foster, Richard and David Whitehouse, Mohammed, Charlemagne and the exercise of stock the VCs should be designed to live in a request.
Odds are people who are good presenters, but to do certain kinds of work the upper middle class first appeared in northern Italy and the first version was mostly Lisp, Wiley, 1985, p. So during the 2002-03 season was 2. Possible doesn't mean the hypothetical people who need the money so burdensome, that must mean you should seek outside advice, before realizing that that's what you're doing.
Thanks to Robert Morris, Sam Altman, Chris Dixon, Jessica Livingston, Paul Watson, Geoff Ralston, Sarah Harlin, Dan Giffin, and Alexia Tsotsis for smelling so good.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
The term “media linguistics” has been formed based on the combination of two key components “media” and “linguistics”, the subject of this new discipline is the study of language functioning in the sphere of mass communication. In other words, media linguistics deals with overall complex research of a particular social field of language usage. (Luginbühl, 2015)
Language registers refer to the levels of formality are used in different situations and scenarios. It is important to be conscious on how we are going to use language appropriately in presenting our messages, when to use a specific register and in what type of media platform it should be used. Topic, audience, purpose and location should be taken into consideration when choosing a register. According to Nordquist (2019), “there are five existing language registers. It includes frozen/static register, formal register, consultative register, casual register and intimate register.
Language style also known as stylistics, is the study of style used in literary, and verbal language and the effect the writer/speaker wishes to communicate to the reader/hearer. It attempts to establish principles capable of explaining the particular choices made by individuals and social groups in their use of language. It strengthens the contact with the reader and heightens their awareness. (Lamichhane, 2017)
Grammar refers to the structural regulations and rules that govern the construction of phrases, sentences and words in any language. This is because they are extremely important for the communication that is desired. Although, some might argue that correct grammar and spelling does not really matter, especially in advertising, like what Paul Suggett (2010, as mentioned in Sommerfield, 2014) statement “A sentence that is structured beautifully, obeying all the laws, and bylaws, of the English language, is not what advertising is all about. In fact, in advertising you don’t even need to use real words, good sentence structure, and proper punctuation, or obey any of the rules that were drummed into you in school.” Indeed, using grammar seems like an uphill battle, but media content without it is a suicide.
Semiotics, also called semiology, is the study of signs and sign-using behavior. The Swiss Linguist Ferdinand de Saussure, one of its founders, defined it as the study of “the life signs within the society”. On the other hand, American Philosopher Charles Sandres Pierce defined sign as “something which stands to somebody for something” and contributed its categorization into three namely: icon, index and symbol. He added that a sign can never have a definite meaning, for the meaning must be continuously qualified. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2020)
Pragmatics deals with utterances, by which we will mean specific events, the intentional acts of speakers at times and places, typically involving language. Logic and semantics traditionally deal with properties of types of expressions, and not with properties that differ from token to token, or use to use, or, as we shall say, from utterance to utterance, and vary with the particular properties that differentiate them. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2019)
INTRODUCTION
Media is deeply rooted in our lives that it is significant in our personal lives, as well as in business, politics and society. Its importance has grown exponentially. It seems like the world is lifeless without it.
Rapid development of the print and the electronic media, quick growth of virtual communications and the Internet have enormously changed people’s lives, giving stimuli for the development of the whole range of information society theories. (Luginbühl, 2015) It creates an overwhelming feeling which made people to take every information that is served on the table. Oftentimes, it misleads people that is why it is important to critically think and evaluate media content.
Patton (1987) defined evaluation as “a process that critically examines something. It involves collecting and analyzing information which include its activities, characteristics and outcomes. It is done in order to make judgments and to ensure that they are as effective as they can be. It can help us identify media content.
This paper aims to provide criteria that will help media users in evaluating media content of different types of media through language use.
DICUSSION
Media content can be evaluated through representation, audience, institutions, language, ideology, narrative and genre, but we are only going to focus on how language is used in these media types. It is also called as media linguistics.
There are six different types of media: Print Media, Visual Media, Electronic Broadcasting Media, Outdoor Media, Transit Media and Digital Media. Each media type will be evaluated on how language is used, specifically language registers, language style, grammar, semiotics and pragmatics.
PRINT MEDIA
Print media represents the oldest and the most widespread type of mass media published on paper. It includes books, circulars, journals, lithographs, memos, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, and periodicals. (Oxford Reference, 2020)
Evaluating print media content in terms of:
Registers: Papers with an international audience usually use formal register.
Stylistics: It follows formal type of writing. it also uses a hierarchy of information to guide the consumer’s attention towards the most important statement/topic. Claims or statements are supported with evidence either in text or figure. Author’s information is usually detailed to make it easy for prospects to contact them and it holds them accountable for any problems on their published article.
Grammar: In this type of media, correct grammar and spelling should be observed. Based on the study conducted by Appelman & Bolls (2011), grammatical errors can affect the credibility of news stories and the amount of time and effort required to read them. Such errors increases reading difficulty and lower readers’ perception of credibility.
Semiotics: Effective print media design is bold and clear. Fonts should be easy to read and high quality graphics should work together. A few prominent graphics will do a much better job that having numerous elements scattered throughout the page. Contrast is everything. It highlights the most important parts of the message to create some visual appeal. Monotone color palette or tones that are very similar to each other are refrained from using.
Pragmatics: The main function of headlines and titles is to inform the reader briefly about the text that follows. They also signal of the paper’s attitude to the facts reported. Also semantically, the headline can be interpreted due to its literal meaning and inferences that readers reach depending on their cognitive knowledge. In order to demonstrate the meaning in its full efficiency, pragmatic aspects are also helpful in specifying the purpose of the article by making appropriate sense. The writer can use different stylistic devices such as discourse markers and connectors, metaphors, rhetorical questions, and emotive words to facilitate the interpretation of the utterances and attract readers’ attention. (Ismail, 2016)
Tumblr media
VISUAL MEDIA
Visual Media as defined by the International Visual Literacy Association is ‘a group of vision competencies a human being can develop by seeing and at the same time having and integrating other sensory experiences. (Welsh & Wright, 2010) In addition to this, it is as a set of competencies that ‘enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visual actions, objects, and/or creative use of these competencies, we are able to communicate with others. (Debes, 1969) it includes images, paintings, videos and infographics.
Evaluating visual media content in terms of:
Registers: Papers with an international audience usually use formal or casual register to attract a wider scope of audience. Lasquite (n.d.) stated, that visual communication is a key component in visual content marketing. Every marketer understands the value of sending the right message to consumers.
Stylistics: Content of this type of media is not going to be plain and boring if they are full of interesting characters and places, if they are connected to themes like good vs. evil etc. and if they have engaging prose that the audience can appreciate.
Grammar: Bradley (2010) said that design elements are like letters and words. When we add design principles and apply them to our elements, our words, we form a visual grammar. As we learn to use both we enable ourselves to communicate visually. In life we can communicate through the spoken word or through gestures. In design we’re bound by a visual language. Even the words on the page are made up of characters of type which are abstract shapes. Written language itself is a visual representation of spoken language. Bradley also stated that the  visual grammar, is the context within which we study design principles. When we learn to use girds or better understand typography or color we are doing so in order to communicate more effectively with our audience. The principles are the trees. Visual grammar is the forest.
Semiotics: Parsa (n.d.) stated that in visual semiotics iconic signs look like its object. They are more ‘motivated’ signs. The indexical signs draw attention to the thing to which it refers. The symbol signs, - e.g. a red rose is a symbol of ‘passion’ in Valentine’s Day and means ‘love’– are unmotivated or arbitrary. In a different culture this color of flower may not signify ‘passion’ or ‘love’. Also, any information, if not directly provided, is gained via a process of interpretation. Texts are not always produced recognizable codes in a communicative process. Usage of symbolic narratives, metaphors and metonymy may restrain the comprehension and signification of the text. In other words, in the exploration of the connotations and the associations, one requires to “make interpretations”. It also includes the material used, camera angles and color filters.
Pragmatics: David Lodge, writing in the Paradise News, says that pragmatics gives humans "a fuller, deeper, and generally more reasonable account of human language behavior." Without pragmatics, there is often no understanding of what language actually means, or what a person truly means when she is speaking. The context—the social signs, the image, body language, and tone of voice (the pragmatics)—is what makes utterances clear or unclear to the speaker and her listeners.
Tumblr media
ELECTRONIC BROADCASTING MEDIA
Electronic media is the media that one can share on any electronic device for the audiences viewing, internet to transmit facts, skills, understanding, knowledge and appreciation with the aims of to attract general publics in general and marketers in particular. Popular examples of electronic media are television and radio. (Wikipedia, 2020)
Evaluating electronic broadcasting media content in terms of:
Registers: Electronic broadcasting media sometimes use formal register because less rigid but still constrained, where communication is expected to be respectful, uninterrupted, and restrained. Slang is never used and contractions are rare. However, it also uses consultative register. often in conversation when they are speaking with someone who has specialized knowledge or who is offering advice
Stylistics: Electronic broadcasting media is combined with a general negative view against excessive foul language has tempered electronic broadcasting into a much more “family friendly” media form. They use electromechanical energy or electronics for public to access the content. Main resources of electronic media are CD-ROM, online content, slide presentations, audio recordings, video recordings and multimedia presentations. Emotional appeal and repetition is highly observed.
Grammar: Electronic broadcasting media encompasses any form of media that is primarily consumed through listening. The grammars that they used in conveying the information to the audience are appealing and interested in the ears and eyes of the viewer.
Semiotics: Electronic broadcasting media uses connotation since they are designed to generate culturally-significant meanings. Iconic sign is usually used in advertisements of this media type. Advertisers do this, not only through repetition, but also through the combining of symbols, bringing words, images and music together into one meaningful and coherent composition.
Pragmatics: Its language contains plural codes, which interact to create new meanings or messages. Electronic broadcasting media uses the language without any opinion to the audience and convey the information just like they are interacting to the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OUTDOOR MEDIA
Outdoor media is typically consisting of any advertising seen outside of the home, and is primarily grouped into a few specific categories such Billboards, posters and transit to name a few. Outdoor advertisements are the best medium to inform the moving population. Once an advertisement board is installed at a place, it usually remains there for a fairly longer period. What is best in outdoor media is that it can be displayed at a place where best impact can be created. (Nguyen, 2020)
Evaluating outdoor media content in terms of:
Registers: It uses casual register because it is probably use when you consider how you talk with other people, often in a group setting—marketers to be specific. Use of slang, contractions, and vernacular grammar is all common in Outdoor media. Also, Outdoor media uses the static register wherein it contains government agency rules, proposed rules, and public notices.
Stylistics: Outdoor media often uses public notices in advertising to different locations. It also uses figurative languages to make their advertisement more reliable and catchier to the commuters or even to the tourists. Outdoor media uses visual techniques to make the viewers more attentive and languages are more powerful in visualizing their ads for the commuters and tourists to have a desirable view.
Grammar: Just like any advertising and marketing strategy, outdoor advertising requires research and preparation so that their use of grammar may not be mistaken because it can affect their viewer’s insight about their advertisement.
Semiotics: When it comes to branding and advertising, semiotics can provide some amazing insights. In some cases, the sign can be an exact representation of the thing being signified, while in other cases, it may be a symbol associated with it. In outdoor media, they use image to visualize the product being sold. They also use word to convey a message with the same effectiveness as an entire picture. It uses the Rule of Thirds and The Golden Mean.
Pragmatics: Outdoor media uses words and images to advertise their products and the words and pictures that they are using, connects to the understanding of the people. The words and images they used are more attractive, catchy and have a bigger size for their viewers to be more interested in their advertisement.
Tumblr media
TRANSIT MEDIA
Transit media refers to advertising placed in, on, or around modes of public transportation: buses, subways, and taxis, as well as at bus, train, and subway stations. Transit media can be a great way to reach a really diverse audience: families traveling to daycares, professionals heading to work, tourists navigating a new town, or even students making their way to a local coffee shop. (Hendricks, 2020)
Evaluating transit media content in terms of:
Registers: Conversational register is often used in this type of media because of its target audience.
Stylistics: Placing a message outside targets a larger audience and is recognized by three quarters of passing individuals. It serves as a last minute reminder or as impulse motivator at pricely a time when real and potential consumers are on the move. Exterior bus posters, displayed on the front, back, and sides of the vehicle, offer advertisers high exposure, particularly in largeurban areas. There are commuters and tourists, or people in cabs, rental cars, and on foot who can see the rolling billboard go by. According to "The Complete Guide to Creative Out-Of-Home Media Forms," bus exteriors are available in 80 to 85 percent of the top 100 markets in the United States on more than 36,500 buses. The bus exteriors provide "mass audience exposures" that are repeated and reinforced as they follow the same routes every day. The more innovative, intriguing and humorous it is, the better.
Grammar: The message should be brief consisting of at least 3-5 words.
Semiotics: It also helps that nearly all transit ads are available at eye level with large graphics and text. The message should be legible. Colors are used to contrast each other. It builds a recognizable format or layout that catches the briefest eyes contact.
Pragmatics: Every transit agency that advertises has guidelines dealing with "objectionable" material. The problem comes in defining what might fall into that category. Seventy percent of the respondents indicated that they had formal, written guidelines addressing ad content. The restrictions differ throughout the transit industry, but generally include some variation of the following prohibited content: illegal, indecent, or immoral ads; political, alcohol, or tobacco ads; libelous, obscene, or profane ads; ads that ridicule individuals or groups of people; advocacy of or opposition to a religion, denomination, tenet, or belief; violent, criminal, or anti-social behavior; false, misleading, or deceptive ads; adult materials and services; explicit sexual material; pornography or businesses that traffic in pornography; and advertising that appears as graffiti, gang signs, or symbols.

DIGITAL MEDIA
Digital media are any media that are encoded in machine-readable formats. Digital media can be created, viewed, distributed, modified and preserved on digital electronics devices. Examples of digital media include software, digital images, digital video, video games, web pages and websites, social media, digital data and databases, digital audio such as MP3, electronic documents and electronic books. (Richard, 2013 as mentioned in Wikepedia, 2020).
Evaluating digital media content in terms of:
Registers: It uses casual register or consultative register because it is probably use when you consider how you talk with other people, often in a group setting—marketers to be specific.
Stylistics: User-generated content raises issues of privacy, credibility, civility and compensation for cultural, intellectual and artistic contributions. The spread of digital media, and the wide range of literacy and communications skills necessary to use it effectively, have deepened the digital divide between those who have access to digital media and those who don't. Each digital media network has its own intended purpose and audience. Understanding this and matching your content and tone to the proper social media outlet is imperative for success..
Grammar: Gumpart & Cathcart examined how new media develop their own grammars, the way individual acquire media literacy, and the effect of media literacy on ways people relate to the world and each other. It concludes that people develop different states of media consciousness based upon the… media grammars, and that particular consciousness produce media gaps which separate people.
Semiotics: When it comes to graphics, it uses color psychology. Photos and videos can boost your social media strategy. Tweets that feature images earn 150 percent more retweets are favorited 89 percent more and lead to 18 percent more clicks. Typing in all capital letters is visually alarming, they also communicate that you’re upset (and yelling) about something. It should be avoided. When used correctly, hashtags will increase your online visibility and followers. When used in excess, it looks spammy and becomes ineffective.
Pragmatics: Its language contains speech acts like constatives (assertive, concessives, suggestive, suppositive, responsive), directives (request, question & requirement), expressives (thank, accept, reject, negative opinion & positive opinion) and attachments (link, code & log).
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION
Media has evolved rapidly over the last couple of centuries. These changes brought a lot of convenience in accessing different types of information, from typical newspapers to our smartphones. It provided an ocean of information these days, but “we need to be critical enough not to drown in hoaxes and misinformation.” Hence, it is our duty to be responsible consumers of information, regardless of media type, and to examine every small detail we see and hear on the media. Indeed, “media is a blessing for humans as it plays a vital role in our personal lives and many other walks of our lives.” It lies upon us who decide whether “media is a blessing or a curse.”

Nickelodeon’s upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movies will be CG animation, as announced by CEO Brian Robbins, risking a loss of craftsmanship that made the original 2D series great. The channel recently enticed fans by signing creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko to a multi-film deal and the establishing of Avatar Studios, which will oversee production of the new movies and series within the Avatar franchise. But a recent comment from Robbins suggests some or all of the upcoming projects will break from the 2D style of the series in favor of contemporary 3D animation, missing a major facet of the original’s appeal.
Avatar: The Last Airbender ran on Nickelodeon from 2005-2008, and over the course of three seasons, it accrued a fervent following and critical accolades. The inventive world-building, tight plotting, mature themes, and balanced tone contributed to the show’s sterling reputation, shedding the pejorative “kids show” designation to rank among all-time prestige TV greats on IMDb’s Top 250 Shows list. Among the many celebrated components of the series was its animation, which devoted careful attention to detail in its portrayal of Eastern aesthetics—particularly the fighting styles. To create the in-world device of “bending,” many traditional martial arts disciplines were studied and applied to fight choreography in ways which resonated with in-world cultures and characters.
Related: If Aang Didn’t Freeze Himself, Could Katara Have Been The Avatar?
So when Robbins described “a series of CG films and a new Avatar series,” some fans were understandably upset. If the movies will break from the style which worked so well for the original show, they risk leaving behind much of the craft and attention to detail that was invested in Avatar‘s animation and visual language. Certainly, with the resources at Avatar Studios’ disposal, there’s every chance DiMartino and Konietzko ensure there’s no drop in quality for these Avatar: The Last Airbender sequels, but such a change leaves the door open for it, as well as being jarring to the longtime audience, whereas continuing the series’ visual style would more likely retain those key elements.
Tumblr media
Translating Avatar: The Last Airbender from script to screen was no small feat, especially given the care that went into narratively grounding the visuals within the in-world cultures of the Four Nations. Animation studios in South Korea, like JM Animation, which worked on 32 of the series’ 61 episodes, had quick turnaround deadlines, and their efforts to avoid cutting corners while reinforcing the writers’ vision in a timely manner should be commended. Avatar has always been a product of two lineages: passionate appreciation for anime and Eastern cultures, and distinctly Western sensibilities in storytelling and characterization.
But 3D computer-generated animation has become the industry standard for feature films, and the days of full-length 2D releases are on their way out if not gone already. Some franchises have updated their designs more gracefully than others. Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) faced criticism for its take on the Looney Tunes. Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli, a stalwart of critically acclaimed Japanese feature animation, recently released their first 3D-animated film Earwig and the Witch (2020), translating their signature style into the medium in a similar fashion to Pixar’s Ghibli-influenced Luca (2021). Disney has also received acclaimed for the visuals of its Frozen movies (2013 & 2019), Moana (2016), and others. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) took an innovative approach to the problem by walking a hybrid tightrope, featuring 3D models with various 2D elements peppered throughout the frame at any given moment.
Perhaps Avatar Studios will look to those examples for guidance in navigating their own creative transition. With no comment as of yet from DiMartino or Konietzko on Robbins’ statement, it’s unknown which direction the new Avatar: The Last Airbender projects will head, nor even if the CG remark applies to the upcoming series in addition to the films. Fans have been burned before when it comes to expansions on this cherished story and world, from M. Night Shyamalan’s infamous The Last Airbender (2010) flop to the upcoming Netflix show which similarly spurned the two creators. With their blessing, though, there remains hope for the future of Avatar.

What is Print Media and Why it is better than Digital Media ?
Tumblr media
What is Print Media ?
Print Media is one of the earliest and most fundamental kinds of public communication. Newspapers, weeklies, magazines, monthlies, and other types of printed periodicals are included. Print material is created mechanically or electronically through impression or photocopying. Printers may create many types of communication by utilising automated digital technology. Print media is a type of mass communication in which news and information are made and disseminated through printed publications. The general public receives this information and images or graphics in printed form, often known as hard copy. The printed medium of communication is made up of physical documents in colour or black and white.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Print Media ?
Print Media has been the most popular advertising medium for centuries, and no new media has been able to threaten its continuing appeal with consumers as well as savvy advertisers and marketers. The primary reason for this is that print media is one of the most trusted modes of communication and one of the cheapest methods to reach many people quickly. However, as digital media marketing has become the current trend in marketing, many marketers have forgotten about print media. However, marketers and advertisers should not underestimate the impact of print media, especially in this digital age, because
Print media is preferred by 18- to 23-year-olds over digital information.
Print advertisements are trusted by 34% of customers more than search engine ads.
Even most of gen z read 9.1 magazines per week.
Advantages
1. Attract visual learners : Many magazine readers are drawn in by flashy graphics in publications. As a result, if you have a great ad design, the outcomes are always encouraging.
2. Still outperforms digital advertising in terms of ROI : Print material is highly likely to be kept at home, re-read, and shared. Newspapers and magazines at doctor's offices, libraries, and public areas have a lengthy shelf life, which improves the visibility of your ad. Print advertising has a better chance of sticking than digital ones, which go away quickly.
3. The customer base is devoted : Print media has a significant number of devoted customers who buy the newspaper weekly or monthly for months, if not years. As a result, you can be confident that your advertisement in print media will receive a lot of attention.
4. There are several possibilities for flexible print media advertising : From features to full-page advertising to tiny ad listings, you have the freedom to choose the sort of ad that best suits your needs and budget.
5. Establishing trust : Print media is one of the most trusted media channels, according to research. Because consumers buy from individuals they trust, print media advertising may generate more sales than any other medium.
6. Reach various generations : Newspaper and magazine readers can range from teenagers to young people to older citizens, allowing you to target a diverse variety of consumers effortlessly.
7. Ideal approach to advertise your brand if you are a local business or group : To raise awareness among the local population, you may efficiently distribute flyers in public places and publish your advertisement in local publications.
Disadvantages
1. Not intended for a worldwide audience : Print media is not the best way to spread the word about your company if you want to reach a worldwide audience since it is challenging to locate print magazines read globally.
2. It necessitates extensive preparation : Getting your work published in print media is a still lengthy process. You must prepare your ad, create ad content, pay someone to design it for you, and then submit it. It is stilly to the publishing, and the payment is processed. The procedure might be time-consuming and difficult.
3. It is difficult to target a particular audience : It is difficult to target specific audiences using print media. Targeting those who wish to buy a camera, for example, is impossible with print media such as weekly newspapers.
4. It might not be noticeable : Even if you pay for a full-page advertisement, there is always a possibility that your ad will be lost amid the other promotions because print media publishes a lot of advice on every issue.
5. Increased cost : Getting published in print media may be quite costly.
What is the future of Print Media ?
As technology tightens its grasp, the world is transitioning to online media and evolving into a digital environment. It's difficult to remember when all of this was new, and print media was the most dominant source of marketing and news. But, with the rise of digital media, can print media/advertising platforms such as billboards, magazines, and newspaper advertisements still have a future?
The answer is yes, for a straightforward reason: authenticity. Don't get it wrong: it is not suggesting that internet forums are not legitimate, but there is so much information on them that it may be challenging to know what to believe and which news is false. Print media is an excellent support system for your digital efforts, enhancing the output of the marketing concepts you apply. As you can see, print media is far from extinct; yet, this may be owing to its traditional nature. Even if we embrace change and the world goes on, we still like reading the newspaper with our morning coffee or opening those newly glossed magazine pages to read at our leisure.
What is the scope and areas of work in Print Media ?
Print is the most ancient and powerful type of media. Print is a primary pillar of mass media in today's world, and it is increasing in every way, whether in tiny and significant newspapers or magazines. Every single print demand is displayed. Young people who wish to work in print media should prefer reporting. We have seen that print requires silent specialists in photography, artists, editors, computer experts, librarians, and cartoonists. Students with expertise in photo skills, graphics, and other animation parts, as well as other sources, are invited to work in print media. There are other places where you may acquire work in print media, like the ones listed below.
1. Editing : Editing is all about how you intend to oversee the preparations. Every newspaper has its editor, who seems to be a qualified editor and covers all aspects of the checking process. They propose innovative ideas and define the publication's style. Every newspaper's editor has a good understanding of their market. Assistant editors report to the editors and are in charge of specific areas such as sports, foreign news, local news, supplements, etc. Editors are also in charge of finding authors, budgeting, and negotiating contracts with freelance writers. When a reporter submits a story, the editor is responsible for making modifications to it. Editors are like all-rounders for every component. Selections, mistakes, and so on are all in the hands of editors.
2. Reporting : In any newspaper or magazine, reporting involves filling the pages with tales and occurrences concerning local, state, national, and worldwide happenings, presenting many points of view on current topics; and closely monitoring the entire situation.
3. Column writing : A newspaper hires professionals to write regular columns. They are tasked with determining who will write the piece regularly.
4. Drawing cartoons : Cartoonists also play a significant role in print, such as when it comes to drawing drawings of political parties or events in print media. Photojournalism is an art form that uses photographs to present a complete tale. Photojournalists provide photographs that they enjoy. The photos should appear to be describing the entire scene.
Why is Print Media is always better than digital media ?
Print Media is more trustworthy since news cannot be changed or erased once it is published. In contrast, we may change or erase the contents of digital material. As a result, individuals in charge of newspapers and periodicals will exercise extreme caution while disseminating news or stories. As a result, print media is more reliable than digital media.
Because all of the material is gathered in a newspaper or magazine, following print media may save a lot of time.
Even yet, some distant locations in India have poor internet connectivity. Print media is a boon to them since it keeps them up to date on what is going on in the globe.
For many people, these days, studying and working entails spending time in front of a screen. As a result, print media provides a welcome respite and relief. Furthermore, more and more people are now choosing for Digital Detox time. Print media is extremely beneficial to them.

Quality content marketing is more important than ever. It improves audience retention, social media traffic, lead generation, site authority, and leads generation. Although quality graphic design can keep people interested and work with a UX designer, the words must be valuable.
Customers want to understand the mission and story behind brands before they buy. High-quality content marketers can achieve this by creating a brand story and knowing the right mediums to share it.
A skilled writer could be the perfect skill if you are struggling to get traction in your marketing efforts. Customers want to learn about the brands they are considering. You should also know the following:
Web Design and Development

Tumblr media

18/02/21 The selfie, and the singularity of the self portrait.
When looking at self portraiture, their are two approaches we can take to it:
Biographical approach:
What happened in the artists life?
What has had an influence on them?
What has happened to the artist that has influenced their personality, or influence their inner world in a way that we can read into the art world?
Focus on the biography of the artist and how the work reflects the artists personal history or personality.
Psychoanalytical approach:
Is defined as a set of psychological theories and therapeutic methods which have their origin in the work and theories of Sigmund Freud. The primary assumption of psychoanalysis is the belief that all people possess unconscious thoughts, feelings and desires and memories.
Sigmund Freud made a profound impact at the beginning of the 20th century on his work about the power of the subconsciousness. He believed that the unconscious mind could communicate through imagery and symbolism. Surrealism came about as a reaction to Freuds writings, particularly an interpretation of dreams. Since this publication, his writings have been criticised by feminist writers such as Judith Butler who rejects his privilege of heterosexuality as deviating from the narrative. Many art historians have engaged with art over the past century to study the personality of the artist, the creative processes and effects of the art on the viewer.
Reception Theory:
Is the documentation of a performance when the private becomes public - self portraiture
Eg. Albert Doras self portrait “I have painted myself in my true colours, that is colours possessed only by the subject like my shirt, it was how he saw himself”
The claim is that self portraits can express and are supposed to express some special sort of truth about their subjects.
Critical question we should be asking:
Is our psychological readings of paintings like an autobiography intended to explain the psychology of the creative individual - analytical
Francesca Woodman
Was an American photographer between 1959 - 81. She was very young and was best known for her black and white photography featuring either herself or female models. Many of her photographs show herself or other women naked. Many of the photos have been intentionally blurred due to movement and a long shutter speed. She merges her subjects, including herself into the background and whose faces are obscured.
Her work continues to be the subject of much critical acclaim and attention years after she died by suicide at the age of 22.
Eel series: Photographed when she was living in Rome. These photographs showcase Woodman lying naked in a vulnerable state, the curve of her body echos the curved form of the eel.
While studying in Rome she came into contact with the symbolist work of Max cleaner who's influence can be seen in this series
“The image is extremely sexually charged, yet on placing herself on both sides of the camera, Woodman hovers between being in control and being defenceless in which femininity can be portrayed. The photographs are not a self portrait in the conventional sense, as it explores the possibility of all sorts of representation, instead of revealing the artists identity, what it does reveal is another side to her own character. The eel can be understood to be a phallic symbol and its representation of liberal desire. However, in this image it appears comparatively limp, still and lifeless within the bowl, in contrast, Woodman's nude body through prostrate is blurred in places which registers her freedom of movement. It can be interpreted that her posture in this series showcases one of expectancy or anticipation.”
She is not only part of the photographers subject but also as the participant in its set up, indeed the organiser of the entire scene, As the organiser of the scene, Woodman chose to direct attention to the central bowl and its contents by shaping her body around it. This composition suggests that Woodman is at once submissive and yet also freely in control of the standing desire, as represented by the phallic eel.
Tumblr media
William Hogarth
Painter, printmaker, pictoral sacra satirist, social critic and a cartoonist.
His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strips, like a series of pictures called modern moral studies.  He was perhaps best known for his moral series, a Harlots Progress and a Marriage A-la Mode. By far the most significant English artist of his generation
Tumblr media
Gillian Wearing
“Signs that say what you want them to say not signs that say what someone else wants you to say” series
YBA
Went out in the streets of London, stopped people and said, “would you write on this piece of paper absolutely what you are feeling?”
Tumblr media
Ana Mendieta
A large part of her work is autobiographical
her work reflects her displacement from Cuba when she was 12. Her parents had sent her and her sister to America for a better life, on their own.
Themes in her work included feminism, life and death, she looks as ideas of identity. She talks about afro cuban traditions in US feminism
She said in 1978 that American feminism is basically a white middle class movement, she fought for intersectionality.
She recorded her performances and actions using 35mm film slides. One of her most notable works would be ‘Untitled Rape Scene’ 1973 - The rape did not happen to her, but a college student. The response to the rape by the press and college was very dismissive and unhelpful, leading to Mendieta to re creating the scene and photographing it for awareness.
ironically she died as a result of domestic violence.
Tumblr media
Sarah Lucas
Photographic self portraits have been an important element of Lucases work since the early 1990s. Her photographs of her eating a banana changed her perception of her masculine appearance from being a disadvantage to something she could use in her art.
“I suddenly could see the strength of the masculinity about it, the usefulness of it to the subject struck me at the point and since then I've used that”
Through her photographs she presents an identity which challenges stereotypical representations of gender and sexuality so she poses both as tough and macho but also as female and she creates an image of defiant femininity.
Tumblr media
Rembrandt
“Forget all preconceptions and stereotypes of him” - Julie
No painter is more philosophical that Rembrandt, since the self portraits constitute an effort of self understanding that few philosophers having achieved. He created approx 100 self portraits, including over 40 paintings and created a visual diary of the artist that stand over 40 years.
His self portraits were created by the artist looking at himself in the mirror and then painting / drawing, therefore reversing his actual features. In the etching, the printing process, reverses the image and therefore shows Rembrandt in the correct orientation.
Tumblr media
Cindy Sherman
best known for her untitled film series. A series of 69 photographs, shot in black and white film. First shown at ‘artists space’ as part of a group exhibition.
This series reflects a very critical and popular fascination with themselves and in them she dresses and poses as a number of young Hollywood starlets, bit players or B movies.
The interpretation of these images, which have been left open by the artist (since they are untitled) has been widely debated. The central ambiguity in the images is whether the depiction of vulnerable young women - does it call attention to the ways that women have been exploited or does it reinforce this process of exploitation?
Analysis of Sherman's work is usually involved in a debate as to whether the images are useful or destructive to feminist politics and theories. Sherman herself denies that her work applies to any sort of theoretical reading.

Narratives of dis-ease: expunged
Spence was a feminist artist who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982 and she made a series of self portraits documenting her battle with the disease until her death a decade later.
The photographs express her physical and emotional state at the time and her doctor/collaborator explained:
“space is representing the honest emotions about living in an unruly body that cannot conform to the pressures of female perfection expected and idealised by western society”
Throughout the series, not one of them shows her eyes - this created a lack of identity and draws attention towards her body which is a symbol of struggle and the personal experience of isolation from the outside world. The background is dull and dreary which reflects back on the emotions held within the picture.

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: VINTAGE REVIEW: The Untouchables
Tumblr media
(Image: vanityfair.com)
THIS RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW AND ANALYSIS WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2019 FOR 25YL AS PART OF THEIR BRIAN DE PALMA TRIBUTE AND RETROSPECTIVE SERIES.
THE UNTOUCHABLES— 4 STARS
At the turn of the late 1980s, lauded filmmaker Brian De Palma needed a commercial win, the kind of score that filled his bank account and raised his cache to make more of his own artistic interests. He got that in 1987 with The Untouchables, a pet project of producer Art Linson who loved the gangland folklore possible with Paramount’s full rights to the characters. Buoyed by a 50% female audience dared into a violent picture, the film returned triple its budget after what would be the 6th highest debut of the year. Featuring all the director’s bells and whistles singing a new tune, The Untouchables returned bankability and creative acclaim to the career New Yorker.
For The Untouchables, De Palma came to the writer’s turf of The Windy City to update and redefine the tropes of gangster film “The Chicago Way.”  Bounding with all of the swagger and toughness of David Mamet’s script, The Untouchables amplifies and dramatizes the Prohibition takedown efforts of famed U.S. Treasury agent Eliot Ness against Chicago Outfit leader Al Capone previously serialized by the 1957 television program starring Robert Stack. Kevin Costner was the reluctant final pick for the lead from the pool of Miami Vice’s Don Johnson, a busy Mel Gibson, and a declining Mickey Rourke to play the lawmen pitted against De Palma’s insisted choice and transformed muse Robert De Niro, and all his peccadillos, as the worshiped crime lord.
With steep dramatic license for silver screen flair, the movie Hollywoodizes the story of the diligent crusader Ness coming to City of Broad Shoulders and getting the tutelage of a brash pair of those in the form of an aging Irish beat cop named Jimmy Malone, played by screen legend Sean Connery in his lone Academy Award-winning role despite what an Empire magazine poll voted as the worst movie accent of all-time. Mamet and De Palma condense the historical Primary Ten into a composite squad of four when Ness and Malone recruit rookie sharpshooter George Stone (Andy Garcia, getting to play a hero after being the heavy in Hal Ashby’s 8 Million Ways to Die) and elevate D.C. bookworm agent Oscar Wallace (the welcome amount of comic relief from Charles Martin Smith). Looming next to De Niro is an army of ne’er-do-well underlings covered with overcoats, fedoras, and Tommy guns led by his Outfit #2 Frank Nitti (Pale Rider’s Billy Drago, after Garcia was approached and moved to Stone).
Playwright hitmaker David Mamet showers these actors with outstanding lines, from long rants to rapid-fire conversation. While he may revise a heap of history, Mamet and his “Mamet Speak” give these actors steak to chew on and De Palma tension to shoot. Even with Connery’s rough accent brimming all over and Costner’s genteel baseline, there’s still not a clunker moment of line delivery all movie. All of it sizzles with cigar smoke mixing with spent gunpowder and lament and heroism teeter-totter strides with the moody and brassy pomp of Ennio Morricone’s top-shelf score.
The high style and period detail are on display in all areas of the movie’s big and clean production values. Many people go straight to the sleek and Oscar-nominated Giorgio Armani threads from costume designer Marilyn Vance (quite a step up from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and they would be keenly right to be impressed. Surfaces like costuming and the equally Oscar-nominated production designs of Amadeus’s Patrizia von Brandenstein, comedy specialist William A. Elliot comedy specialist, and Disney live-action veteran Hal Gausman drape, bath, and decorate pulpy antiquity out of the genuine Chicago locations.
From this Chicagaoan’s eyes, Eric Schwab, De Palma’s longtime location scout and manager (and a future second unit director on six of the man’s films), outdid himself with the rich finds and recreations that sought lurid decadence. From Roosevelt University standing in as the notorious Lexington Hotel, Frank Lloyd Wright’s The Rookery used as police headquarters on historic La Salle Street, the Tiffany Dome of the Chicago Cultural Center (and original city library) to those climactic Union Station steps and every church steeple in between, Chicago has rarely look better or more ominous.
Furthermore, the cinematographer and editors are part of what makes Brian De Palma and The Untouchables look so damn good and pop with visual storytelling. That success comes from successful and extensive collaboration. Cinematographer Stephen H. Burum would go on to work with the director for eight films. Editors Bill Pankow and Gerald G. Greenburg add nine and five trips, respectively, with De Palma to that teamwork tally. For more detail, Burum was highlighted by a nice interview piece in American Cinematographer for his work on The Untouchables last year. One fun fact is that the studio quickly talked him out of shooting in black-and-white. Be glad he was because the color always pops. The outstanding widescreen framing from Burum and the suspenseful sense of pacing from Pankow and Greenburg sharpen and highlight De Palma’s entertaining and engaging moves.
And those chops!  As for what we’re celebrating here on 25YL, the real talent is Brian De Palma and his endlessly studied and glorified filmmaking prowess and visual trademarks. His tricks of the trade are applied to a ballsy, dramatic adventure that bleeds buckets of crimson underneath all those aforementioned surfaces.  Let’s talk angles first.
In many establishing shots, including catching street signs and the high angle zooming straight down from an opening card of history notes to a character introduction of De Niro’s Capone getting pampered and nicked in a barber’s chair, De Palma uses canted angles. De Palma and Burum also enjoyed low angles that highlight height or the towering setting, like the Tiffany Dome presiding over the wide spectre looking up to Capone later. One stellar example of viewing location is the creeper sequence of Malone’s home invasion, where the low angle and the POV steps set up tension and surprise.
The most celebrated clinical example of angles comes from the “di-opt” split focus used during the blood oath church scene between Malone and Ness with that great “Chicago way” proverb. A half convex glass, one part near-sighted and one part far-sighted, kept both the two heroes in focus as well as the lofty and gorgeous church ceiling behind them. The stillness and depth of that scene, boosted by Mamet’s words and the mettle of the performances, are a very good foil to the pace of the rest of the picture.
youtube
The next visual feast of De Palma’s craft from the film are the movements. The amount of slow-sweeping pans and tracking shots of precise choreography are impressively mind-boggling. Long takes rule as the average shot length of The Untouchables is 5.7 seconds, a stout eternity by today’s thriller standards. Capone’s stalking baseball bat table circle monologue has a few cutaways for potential swing victim identification, but the circular pan from the low angle is gorgeous for both the hulking fear and finery on display. Even a shorter sequence like the Steadicam use following Wallace escorting a witness through the police hallways to his grave ending in the elevator are a long single-take marvel.
youtube
The piece-de-resistance of editing and motion married together is the movie’s storied gunfight climax set on lobby steps of Chicago’s Union Station. It’s a scene De Palma reduced from a moving train sequence for budget and shot on the fly in substitution. Out of necessity, De Palma mixed a source of homage, the Odessa Steps sequence from Sergei Eisenstein’s The Battleship Potemkin, to create his own holdout sequence where hurdles block the protagonists’ path for a necessary task. This classic scene also presents the best use of De Palma’s penchant for occasional slow-motion while amping up the sound work of the intersecting chess pieces. Pankow and Greenburg’s editing assistance really shines. Replica or note to Eisenstein, the result is brilliant and better than what some big-budget train chase would have been. De Palma would get that checkbook-busting chance again in Mission: Impossible nearly a decade later.
youtube
History and popularity have been kind to Brian De Palma’s crime movie achievement. The American Film Institute nominated the movie in five categories (Movies, Thrills, Hero, Villain, Film Score, and Gangster Film) during its “100 Years” series last decade. Then and now, The Untouchables earned a city’s pride and spurred new popularity to the Capone legend. Its success also fueled a star’s rise (Costner), secured another’s lasting legacy (Connery), and reminded audiences just how sharply talented its steward was. Once the end credits hit and Morricone plays us all out, you can also feel Brian De Palma channeling tough-guy Jimmy Malone with a “here endeth the lesson.”  The hitmaker never lost his edge.

A Marketing to Media Translation Dictionary For Journalists Turned Content Marketers
By Emily Gaudette
Translating is a tricky business. I took seven consecutive years of French classes, and most of the time, my teacher was a Lebanese-American woman named Hala Kim. She liked to remind us that English was her fourth tongue—after Korean, Arabic, and French. In Madame Kim’s unique blend of languages, she’d always say we needed to “be careful to listening.”
My teacher had a charming way of wording things in English because her personal vocabulary was like a complicated French-accented soup: a linguistic bouillabaisse. That’s how complex and lovely things can get when you pour in terms from multiple cultures. In the marketing world, professionals tend to glom onto useful marketing buzzwords as a shared language, and those terms can actually prove useful to professionals in adjacent industries.
As the marketing and media industries continue to look more and more alike, their lexicons overlap too. Ultimately, marketers and media employees want the same thing—engaged audience members—but we’ve all been taught to talk about attention and audience using industry-specific terms.
For all you media folks out there who are planning a switch to marketing, we’ve put together an introductory translation dictionary for you. You can also use this dictionary as a lead tool if you’re a marketing exec who wants to hire a team of Pulitzer Prize-winning writers for your brand’s blog. You’ll need to speak their language to recruit them, and veteran newspaper reporters don’t necessarily know what “map against your KPIs” means.
No matter why you’re reading this, these thirteen alphabetically listed terms should help you communicate across the divide. So let’s get started!
Call to action (CTA)
A call to action (CTA) is a bit of language in a blog post or piece of content that prompts the audience to do something specific.
The primary difference between marketing and the mainstream media (which I’ll call MSM from here on out) is that every single piece of marketing content should require specific action on the part of the reader, even if that action is just” read more”. For a brand, it’s not enough if 1,000 people read a blog post—those people need to click through to more content, subscribe to an email newsletter, or make a purchase. Content marketers never make content for content’s sake.
Meanwhile, a media company like Hearst might publish a feature article in the print edition of Esquire magazine, and the sole “point” of that article might be “make the reader feel like they really get Chris Evans.” Functionally, it’s fluff. Artistically, it’s likely reaching for the standard of a classic celebrity profile like “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold.”
To many, injecting a CTA into a piece of writing is to sully the art form. A CTA is what makes a piece into “sponcon,” or sponsored content. But increasingly, CTAs are looking like useful tools for the MSM. Many media companies have begun putting CTAs on their websites—the pop-up warning you that you’ve reached your third free article for the month and will soon need a paid subscription is one example. A lead form for a magazine’s free email newsletter is another.
CMP
A content marketing platform (CMP) is software for organizing the content marketing process. It looks a lot like a CMS (content management system), but a CMP is designed to help marketers do their jobs effectively. A CMS, on the other hand, serves many different kinds of professionals at once.
Most writers at media companies simply use the CMS as a place to paste in their writing. At media companies run by tech executives like Bustle Media Group, writers may routinely use a CMS for social packaging and basic SEO metadata too, but they still typically turn to platforms like Parse.ly and Chartbeat if they’re interested in their audience metrics.
Over in the marketing world, all that audience data is usually baked into a CMP. At least, it’s there if you’re using a good one. You wouldn’t buy a CMP without data reporting capability, and the really stellar options have a transparent workflow management interface.
Content campaign
A content campaign is a plan for the strategic use of content marketing around a specific goal. This one is a pretty one-to-one translation of “editorial package.” I heard colleagues say “package” and “packaging” constantly while writing for magazines and media companies, and now that I’m in marketing, everyone says “campaign.” Why? No idea. But there’s your translation.
Just like an editorial package, a content campaign is a multi-format publishing plan that might comprise social media posts, videos, gifs, email newsletters, press releases, merchandising, print media, and blog posts. It is the central effort of several content-adjacent teams to get people’s eyeballs on a particular piece of content.
Data-driven
A data-driven strategy or program refers back to data gathered from different avenues on a brand’s target audience. In the MSM, journalists who routinely parse out study findings and crunch numbers in order to report on them often self-identify as data journalists. Not every journalist is a data journalist—that’s how Nate Silver was able to create FiveThirtyEight with a central data-breakdown “gimmick.”
It may be difficult to work as a journalist in the MSM without having any knowledge of statistics, but it is completely impossible to do similar work in marketing without those skills. Though a lot of media still relies heavily on anecdotal evidence like interviews, opinions, or criticism, marketing lives and breathes data.
In the mainstream media, one celebrity’s personal experience with divorce is a compelling enough story to stand on its own. No MSM writer is going to interrupt their lede about Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk divorcing to dig deep into the national divorce rate, but a content marketer at a dating app company probably pumps out a blog post per week on that data.
Gamification
Gamification is a psychological trick that inspires us to enter sweepstakes, pour hours into Candy Crush, and buy all our lotions at Sephora just to watch those loyalty points rack up. (Just me?) Even if you’re not a marketer, you’re probably familiar with the concept of gamification—it’s the way brands turn engagement into a game-like process that rewards active players with little incentives.
Some especially savvy media companies have played with gamification in recent years. Inverse.com’s email newsletter reward habitual readers by racking up points, which readers can spend in the media company’s webstore. The New York Times has published several stories that use interactive UX designs, and these psychologically “reward” readers for clicking around with funny animations. This gamification of a company’s own website is also a hallmark in data visualization journalism like the stories on FiveThirtyEight.
Hub and spoke
To use a hub and spoke model in content marketing is to center all pieces of content around a single enterprise project. It’s a metaphor: there’s a hub at the center of a bicycle wheel, and each spoke that supports the shape of the tire connects back to that central hub. Content marketers like to advise writers to focus on a “hub” piece—usually a long-form e-book or whitepaper—and then build supporting pieces of content around it, like spokes.
If a writer in the MSM were to write a single definitive feature story and then spend the next few weeks writing short blog posts about the same story, well, they’d be accused of being derivative. There’s a vast cavern between reporting on a beat and repeating yourself, and that’s what keeps “hub and spoke” out of the minds of most media writers. The only time you’ll see an editorial strategy of this kind in the MSM is if a newsroom is particularly attached to search traffic (as marketers are). When I worked at Inverse, a website modeled after Bryan Goldberg’s now-ubiquitous “search-driven” strategy, we called hub and spoke strategy “topic swarming.”
Ideation
Ideation just means pitching or brainstorming. Sometimes marketers use a ten-dollar word when a ten-cent word will do. (See also: “utilize” and “leverage” when you could just say “use.”)
Journalistic
To be “journalistic” in your content marketing work means that you operate “somewhat like a journalist.” You technically interview people at your company and write Q&As. You apply for press passes to trade conventions and cover them the way a journalist would cover a convention. It’s a sliding scale, though. Occasionally, “being journalistic” means you are close to a journalist as a bottle of orange Gatorade is to an orange.
Here’s the thing, though, and I say this from experience: a lot of professional writers in the MSM are just as “journalistic” as content marketers. If you cover the film industry, for instance, and you’re not at a trade publication, chances are you’re not actually breaking “stories” as often as you are publishing explainers and breaking down fan theories. That kind of writing is closer to “making content” than it is to “doing good journalism.” So in this case, marketers just found an apt word to describe a multi-industry phenomenon.
KPIs
Your key performance indicators (KPIs) are a group of measurable values that demonstrate how swiftly a marketing department is working toward its business objectives. Example: if your business objective is to increase your brand’s sales enablement program, your KPI for that goal might be “we will produce twenty-four new marketing-qualified leads (MQLs) this quarter.”
Sidenote: you might be wondering why KPIs are “key” performance indicators instead of just “performance indicators.” The answer is that marketers love to say the word “key.” You’re not just gathering coworkers in a room—you’re inviting key stakeholders. You’re not just telling an audience what a slideshow is going to involve—you’re giving them key takeaways. Don’t ask me why “key” is key—it’s just one of those marketing industry mysteries we don’t talk about, like “how did they get Henry Rollins to speak at Content Marketing World?!” and “why am I the only one in this office who washes their own coffee mug?!”
ROI
You’ll often hear marketers ask for a project or story’s demonstrated return-on-investment (ROI), which is just a fancy way of asking, “How did this do?” If you’re an MSM writer or editor, you might associate ROI with audience metrics like page clicks and social shares.
Marketers tend to have a deeper understanding of ROI because they wear more hats than the average writer at a website or magazine. At a media company, functions like social media strategy, newsletters, video, UX design, SEO, and aud dev are typically split across a team of people, but in a content marketing department, everyone does a bit of everything. That’s why all marketers are responsible for proving ROI on their work, whereas writers are often just told how their stories are doing by other teams.
SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of formatting online content according to parameters set by Google’s algorithm, in order to make that content appear higher on a search engine results page (SERP).
Most writers know what SEO is in a vague sense, but they’re probably not responsible for implementing a strategy. Most media companies tend to separate search data from the pitch process, drawing a line in the sand between the science and art of publishing effectively. For marketers, that line is irrelevant, because the art of content creation will always come second to the science—however, you do need both to do content marketing well.
Because of a lack of education on the subject, many writers think of SEO as simply turning their headline into a question that readers might Google. Content marketing requires a more nuanced understanding of optimization, from meta data to keywords and longtail subject authority.
Snackable
If a piece of content is “snackable,” it means it’s designed to be engaged within a single sitting. A long-form piece of writing is not snackable, but an infographic posted to social media is snackable. Because content marketers typically work in a more diverse array of media formats than writers, they come up with ways to categorize these offerings.
Again, marketers fall in love with buzzwords, but you don’t have to say “snackable” to get a job in the industry. You can just call a social graphic or an infographic or a gif whatever it is.
Thought leader
Admittedly, this is the one content marketing buzzword that creeps me out. A “thought leader” is just an industry critic, talking head, or influencer, but something about that particular phrasing reminds me of Charles Manson.
I’m not alone either. In 2017, progressive outlet The New Republic published an op-ed calling thought leadership a hollow product of income inequality in the Western world. Thought leadership in a business setting, the article argued, is sort of weaponization of TEDTalk-style presentations, and a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing. “The rich have empowered a new kind of thinker—the ‘thought leader’—at the expense of the much-fretted-over ‘public intellectual,’” David Sessions wrote. “Whereas public intellectuals like Noam Chomsky or Martha Nussbaum are skeptical and analytical, thought leaders like Thomas Friedman and Sheryl Sandberg ‘develop their own singular lens to explain the world, and then proselytize that worldview to anyone within earshot.’”
So, it’s up to you whether thought leaders are harmless LinkedIn influencers or agents of late-stage capitalism. You should just know the term if you’re working in content marketing because a lot of folks fancy themselves thought leaders.
UGC
User-generated content (UGC) refers to any online media created by the audience members following a brand. Because marketers want to inspire relationships with their audiences, even more so than the average writer, they tend to put emphasis on UGC. If a brand asks followers to tweet their own stories about a product, or take a photo at a branded event and share with a hashtag, they’re requesting UGC.
Interestingly, MSM writers like to joke about avoiding UGC—see the whole “reply guy” controversy, the “don’t @ me” mindset, or the persistent “don’t read the comments” meme. It’s all done playfully, but the punchline is that an MSM writer doesn’t really want to be bothered with feedback from random readers. Social shares are appreciated, but a modern critic or reporter doesn’t like to think of themselves as embroiled in a constant conversation with the general public. Marketers, on the other hand, are ravenously hungry for that back-and-forth.
Now, this is just a list of thirteen marketing terms that require a bit of context for the average media employee. There are hundreds of more buzzwords, disappearing from industry conversations as quickly as they arrive, but if you know this set, you can have a productive conversation with a content marketer. So go forth and network!

Creative thinking & the writing process
Tumblr media
One advantage humans have over computers or robots is the ability to think creatively and to experience and understand human emotions. This means that for now, you will always win against a robot when it comes to emotional intelligence and creative thinking. Scientists and developers have not figured out the components of human creativity due to intangible elements in human nature such as intuition and randomness. There is no empirical definition for human creativity.
Artificial Creativity or Computational Creativity aims to develop programs and robots capable of the same level of creativity as that of humans, some programs seek to enhance human creativity. But to achieve this, scientists/developers will have to study and understand the components of creative behaviour in people. With more research findings and technological development, we will have intelligent robots capable of storytelling, scientific invention, painting, and music composition, to list a few.
I am beginning to ask myself why the discussion on artificial intelligence seems to be geared towards pitching humans against machines. Humans invented machines to help with work. The objective ought to be collaborative, however, knowing the competitive world we live in, it does make sense that the discussion seems to be more about human skills being pitched against those of intelligent robots. And one reason that stands out to me is money. Developers and inventors of machines/robots seek to sell their products to the highest bidder, and so the advertising and communications around it is deliberately made to sound combative.
"My intelligent machine can perform all these functions you need done, faster, more efficiently, and more effectively than the humans you currently have, and at a better quality too. My intelligent machine will put you ahead of your competition faster than you can say “potato”."
It takes capital to research and construct these programs/robots, so it makes sense that developers and inventors will seek to earn money off of their creations. However, I do believe that not all developers of intelligent machines are after money. But that's a discussion for another time.
It is also true, that as we continue to create and evolve, the purpose of machines will also evolve. How much control do we have over our creations, especially self-organising inventions? How much control does the universe have over its creations?
For creative writers and bloggers, the advantage we currently have over writing and editing robots/programs is creative thinking and emotional intelligence.
Creative thinking is the ability to identify patterns in your subject of focus which will lead to new information for the reader, and perhaps, society. It starts with finding ways to learn something new.
When you read a book or a piece of writing, your mind processes the information and you try to analyse it. You do this unconsciously most of the time, because your mind is always at work, even when you are asleep. The same applies when you watch a movie/film, listen to music, enjoy fine art, or when you are looking for solutions to problems whether at work or in your personal life. But creative thinking requires practice, otherwise, your mind will not be wired to discover patterns and ideas which are not obvious to everyone.
Practice creative thinking by learning how to solve riddles, and keep a writing journal or notebook. Whenever you finish watching a movie, listening to music, or reading a book, an article, a story, or a blog post, take your notebook and ask yourself the questions below (or use them to create your own questions). There are no correct answers to these questions. So feel free to explore unconventional ideas.
Why did I enjoy (or dislike) this film, music, artwork, book, article, or story?
Or why do I feel ambivalent about it?
Why did the writer write this story? Why did the artist create this artwork?
Why did this film, song, essay, article, story or artwork touch me so much? Or why did I find it so boring? Why don’t I care, either way?
If I were to create something similar, how would I do it?
You can add your own questions to this list and answer them in writing. After writing your answers down, read them.
As you read, ask yourself:
How can I make my answers sound funny? How can I add humor to my words?
Practice re-writing your answers in a humorous way.
How can I make my answers sound angry?
Practice rewriting your answers in an angry tone.
How can I make my answers sad and depressing?
Practice rewriting your answers from a depressive point of view.
How can I make my answers sound horrifying and deadly?
Use your answers to practice horror writing.
Should you decide to focus on one subject at a time for your creative thinking process, remember to use mind-mapping to help you explore and connect similar ideas.
After you've  finished addressing one subject, ignore that subject for a few days or even several months.  When you give yourself the experience of reading your own words as a stranger would, that’s when you begin to notice patterns which were not obvious to you before.
Another exercise you can engage in, is to list your personal beliefs about life, and various social issues. You can explore your beliefs on land rights, work issues, relationships, race, religion, poverty, gender, fashion, travel, immigration, crime, politics, mental health, or something that really bothers or inspires you.
Make a list of your strongly-held beliefs. You know, the ones you think no other view can interfere with. Take each belief and attempt to write an opposing view to it. Let the rage or joy flow, and write till you are drained. Then close your note book, and forget about it for a few days.
After this step, read through your writing, and look for something you've written which surprises, baffles, annoys, or interests you. Create a private visual board ( a physical one) and pin your interesting ideas on it. This will help you to focus, and you will also notice interesting patterns in your ideas.
Remember to examine your writings later and make an effort to explain your thoughts. Read your words and ask whether you've added details which will make a reader understand your point of view.
This approach to creative thinking through the writing process is not one to be rushed through, especially when you are looking for innovative ideas or solutions to problems.
When you deliberately engage in the thinking process through writing, your creative abilities develop. When you get stuck, write about getting stuck in your writing process. The objective is to write till you feel drained. It can be therapeutic.
If you practice this approach to writing once or twice a week for a year or more, you will find yourself always having new ideas to write about. Your writing will begin to have an irresistible energy which will keep the people who read your work coming back for more. You will be adding emotion and insight to your words as you practice these tips using the free-writing method. Free-writing develops fluency, the ability to speak and write with ease. Eventually you will unlock ideas which your audience will find appealing.
The creative thinking process allows you to see the world in ways you never imagined possible. It can be an enriching experience, although you can also get yourself all tied up in knots, especially when you encounter riddles and paradoxes. Remember to take healthy breaks from time to time.

Conversations | Interview with Adriana Rios, Grants Program Manager at NALAC
Tumblr media
The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC), one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the promotion, advancement, development, and cultivation of the Latino arts field, is one of our partners in San Antonio, TX, supporting the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program.
With over 400 applicants this past year, the NALAC Fund for the Arts (NFA) is the only national grant program investing in Latinx artists and nonprofit arts organizations in the United States.
During the first weekend of IAP San Antonio (meet our newest cohort here!), we had a chance to speak with Adriana Rios, NALAC’s Grants Program Manager, about the application process and other opportunities the organization offers. As an advocate for stronger representation and equity in the arts and a film lover at heart, Rios also gives us insights into the Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film.
NYFA: Did you see any trends in past applications for The NALAC Fund for the Arts? What are some of the issues/themes that Latinx artists are interested in these days?
Adriana Rios: We were very excited to see the number of applications that came in for this year’s grant cycle! They came from all over the country and Puerto Rico, and it’s always incredible to see what Latinx artists are creating in their communities. In terms of trends, we definitely see an influx of applications coming in from states that have high Latinx demographics such as Texas, California, and New York. However, we’re also starting to notice an increase in applications from other parts of the country—such as the Midwest and the South—which are not always immediately thought of as areas with a high Latinx concentration. For our team, receiving applications from these states allow us to get a glimpse into what Latinx cultural production looks like across different areas and how NALAC can start to build relationships with artists producing important work in those places. We believe Latinx artists are often at the forefront of directly addressing the issues that are taking place in our current social and political climate, so we did see migration, immigration, history and human rights arise as consistent themes in the applications we received this year.
Tumblr media
NYFA: Can you tell us what made some projects stand out during the review process?
AR: Of course! NFA applications are evaluated through the following criteria: Artistic Merit, Funding Impact, and Capability. We find that applications that rise to the top are able to successfully demonstrate how their work addresses each category. On a technical level, we saw that applications that stood out were succinct and clear. We make it a point in our review process to acknowledge that artists start at different places in the grant-writing process, some may have more experience writing grant proposals while others may be first-time grant writers. However, regardless of experience, the applications that always rose to the top were the ones that were able to paint a full picture of what the artist intended to do within the funding period. On an artistic level, we found that project proposals that pushed the envelope of Latinx cultural production were incredibly exciting to panelists. In other words, where there was innovation, reimagination, or artistic approaches that engaged the community in a creative way, there were high levels of enthusiasm and eagerness by the reviewers.
NYFA: Knowing about your love for film, we’d like to ask you some questions about the Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film [Emerging Filmmakers]. Who should apply for it and how can they prepare in advance for this opportunity?
AR: The Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film is a grant opportunity offered through the NALAC Fund for the Arts each year. It was developed by the Donor Collaborative of the Adán Medrano Legacy Award with the intention to further impel dynamic, Latinx cinema production by emerging filmmakers that contribute towards a cultural understanding of Latinx expression and identity. It’s currently open to emerging Latinx filmmakers in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, where “emerging filmmaker” is defined as: having less than five years of experience in filmmaking as a writer, director or producer; having completed at least one independent film or video work in one of those roles; and having received basic training in the media arts. Training can be formal (college or university) or informal (production courses, workshops, hands-on experience). So, if you meet that criteria, we encourage you to apply! However, NALAC is currently thinking about what emerging means in the broader context of film and cinematic production, especially since our community is so underrepresented in the industry. Currently, this is one of our most competitive grant categories, so if you are considering applying, my advice is to think hard about what work samples really speak to your experience as a filmmaker. Again, clarity is key in the grant-writing process and since film is so reliant on visual story-telling, it’s important to think about what work allows panelists to understand your capability and artistic ability.
Tumblr media
NYFA: We are delighted to see that this year NALAC added an Artist Grant for artists living in Puerto Rico. Can you tell us more about this program?
AR: We’re so thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity for artists living and creating work in Puerto Rico. This grant opportunity came out after we closed the general categories for the NFA. We wanted to make sure that we were building an application that was accessible and relevant to the needs of artists on the island. We partnered with Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, who has been actively involved with artists on the island since Hurricane Maria hit, and their team was incredibly helpful in both the crafting of the application and the outreach process. In its inaugural year, we received over ninety applications for the Puerto Rico Artist Grant. It is our goal to continue offering this grant opportunity in future years as well as develop relationships and networks with artists on the island. NALAC doesn’t simply want to be a funder, we want to support the artists and communities on the ground who have been doing the work to sustain the creative and cultural practices of the island and stand in solidarity with their efforts. Artists are leading the charge in both depicting the political and socioeconomic realities post-Hurricane Maria, as well as demonstrating the vibrant, resilient, and creative expressions that have existed on the island for decades.
Tumblr media
NYFA: The application is now open for the NALAC Leadership Institute. Do you have any advice for people that are thinking about applying?
AR: The NALAC Leadership Institute is a week-long leadership and arts management program that aims to equip Latinx artists and arts administrators with innovative and practical strategies that lead to successful business practices in the arts. My advice would be to think about your professional goals and what you’re hoping to accomplish. Once you’ve defined that for yourself, consider the following: How can the NALAC Leadership Institute be a resource for you in your professional and artistic journey? Knowing your goals and professional aspirations are essential to the application process. You’ll want to be clear and concise in defining what they are in your narrative. Ultimately, it’s our hope that every fellow that passes through any of our leadership programs feel valued and that the commitment to growth is not only your objective, but ours as well.

How to become an expert in any field
If you feel that to be an expert in your field, you either have to be born genius, or you should have a lot good memory or if nothing but at least, you have to keep your head in the books for years. But this is not the truth. Actually, all people can become good learners. For this you do not need to be next newton or you don’t need to have a photographic memory. You only need special learning methods. By adopting these methods, you will be able to prepare yourself to become an expert in any subject. Here in this article you will be able to know six essential steps to mastering the Art of Learning. As well as helping you enjoy the learning process, it will show you how to excel in those areas where you usually perform poorly.
For whom is this article?
For teachers, professors and students
Who needs to master his skills.
For all of those who had difficulty in learning.
'Learning' is easy; just you need the right tools and strategies.
For years it has been believed that our ability to learn depends on our inherent intelligence.  But, now the experts started telling that this is not the truth. With the help of some tools and strategies you can improve your learning significantly. The biggest discovery in this is that some learning by implementing some strategies, you can greatly improve your results.
In the 1980s, Anastasia Kitsantas conducted an experiment in a girls' school. They divide the girls into three teams and taught them how to play darts.
"Team Performance"
"Team Learning Method"
"Team Conventional Wisdom"
Team performance members were told that they could win by hitting the Bulls Eye. The members of the Team Learning method were told to use the tactics needed to scold them, such as keeping their hands close to their bodies. And the girls of Team Conventional Wisdom were simply asked to do their best. In the end, not just "Team Learning Method "beat everyone but its members enjoyed playing too.
Also, there is another useful learning tool which called 'self-quizzing' learning tool. This involves repeatedly memorizing what you have learned and taking your own test. This technique is designed to remember new ideas for a long time. In fact, research suggests that self-quizzing IS 50 percent more effective than any other learning strategy.
In a study at the University of Washington in 2006 showed the same. Researcher Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger gave a sentence to two groups of participants. The first group reads it four times, and the second group reads it only once, but remembers it three times by practicing it. When Karpicke and Roediger took their test a few days later then he founds that the group which had self-quizzing, that sentence in their mind had sat down much better.
The last way to increase learning ability is to block external noise using earplugs. When the author was 11 he used this technique.  They had trouble focusing on math problems, and he found that by using the earplugs properly, it really helps to keep them focused.
We saw how effective some learning strategies are. Not only those, help in learning but they make learning even more fun.
By using these six steps of you can make learning more effective. The first is about step value. If you make your skills or knowledge valuable and meaningful, so you will be motivated to take the first step and keep perseverance. For example you can take the case of Jason Wolfson, he is an engineer running in the 40th stage of his age. His basement is field with Lego toys. An older man playing with toys, shuffling and fixing them looks a little strange maybe, but there is a story behind their creation.  The blue police phone booth is inspired by ‘Dr. Who’, and Gonzo's replica is a tribute to his wife, who is a big fan, of the ‘Muppet’ character.
Wolfson gives so much time and effort to these creations because they really matter to him.  And just because of this he became a master of it!  But, counts and importance does not thrive on trees, which are gone and broken them. It takes time and hard work to find. Like some students are very obsessed with their statistics. And so them to inspire a group from the University of Virginia, Psychology Professor Chris Hulleman Devised created a small strategy. He asked to write an essay to his students, how the data can enhance them and their interests. He introduced some amazing ideas, like how can figures help their chances of becoming nurses, managers or marketers. As a result, they began to take more interest in the subject. Rather some felt a worm of data that they went one class ahead.
Small, specific goals have to be made, but that first you learn your basic elements.
Learning success comes from setting goals. And, step number 2 is about: break the big goals into smaller ones, so that you can focus on one place at a time. Let's say you want to improve your marathon running time. Instead of just trying to run fast, target the smaller and improvable aspects of running. Like you can give this week in hilly areas for better training. Such small targets are not only challenging tasks, but they will make it even easier to track your best. But, to master your skills, it is important to do more than break your big goal into small traits. You must have some background knowledge before getting started. This is because the new subject area is difficult to understand. Unless you have control over its basic element.
For example, suppose you have no knowledge of French language and suddenly someone asks you, "Comment allez-vous? " without the knowledge of some basic French words and grammar, you will not even know they asked you in French, “How are you”? You should apply this concept everywhere in your life. After all, you will not try to fix it without knowing anything about computer right? And once you know your important things, then you will get better at setting your small and achievable goals.
The importance of feedback increases, when it comes to learning.
Have you ever made a presentation in front of your friend before finals day? This is a common thing to do and also it has a good reason too. Audience evaluation would be a great way to improve.   This is why the third step is 'developed'. Develop your skills further by getting feedback. When you're learning, you often don’t know which areas you need to improve. Someone else’s vision will prove to be good for you in the long run, even if you feel like you are slowing down at that time.
The writer really personally benefited from the move. He always loved playing basketball, but he never been very good but he was one of the worst players of his team. He used to play basketball in    his local court for half an hour every day. Despite this, his steps and footwork were disappointing.  This was because his effort was not focused, and they were not receiving any feedback.  Again, one day while crawling, craigslist met their basketball coach “Dwayne Samuels”.  With the help of Samuels, the author worked on some special tricks such as one-dribble, pull-up jump shot. The trainer told him that how to rotate the ball by middle finger and in which posture the feet should be.  Within a few weeks the writers jump-shots began to go into the basket and they also started making three-pointers.
Another way to improve is to reduce the rate of mistakes by monitoring and recording your mistakes. If you monitor your work, then you will know more about your performance and also where are you making mistake.  In short, you will not repeat the mistakes.
Brain surgeons are also take advantage of this technique. Mark Bernstein had his Toronto operating room over a period of ten years and he recorded every mistake that he made. Misconception, delaying sponges or delaying anesthesia; everything moved to their database. Due to this feedback system, his team’s rate of mistakes in operation was decreased from 3 to ½ in a month.
You can improve your learning by immersing yourself in your field and making things visual.
You might think that famous writers, artists or scientists were born to succeed in their respective fields. But, in reality, such people become a genius only by constantly meditating in the furnace of practice. This is step number 4: Expand the knowledge that you already have. In other words, if you want to touch the highs, then you will have to constantly increase your understanding for the subject. The painter Jackson Pollock knew it well. At the age of 23 he joined the workshop of Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros. Siqueiros encouraged Pollock to experiment. Right there Pollock have learned the techniques of drip and pour, later he earned so much fame in the world, but it took him a long time to become proficient in this technique. They learned to work with fractal structures which are geometric patterns that are repeated on even the smallest scale, like you will find it in Romanesco broccoli or spiral galaxies.
First, Pollack's early drip paintings; fractal complexity was equal to no. But over time, their fractals become more complex. Rather, they had become so complicated that Richard Taylor, who was a physicist, first noted them.
To increase the relationship between concepts and skills will make your learning even better by practicing different methods.
It’s been that the best way to master skills is to practice them again and again. But the problem is that just keeping trying is not so effective. This is where the fifth step comes – You have to relate things. In other words, you need to make connections between your concepts.
In 1908 psychologist Charles Judd conducted an experiment to prove it. They had two groups of children, those had to aim with a dart on the target placed 4 inches below the water. The first group only practices throwing darts under water. But the second group had already told about the refraction. They now understood that the goalwhere it appears, it is not his actual position. They knewhow light moves in water. After this, Juddplaced the target underwater at a depth of 12 inches, wherethe refraction was more obvious. This makes the situation even moredifficult because the target looked even farther from its actual position. Of course, the group that had a grip on the physics could relate their learned knowledge in this situation. As expected, they defeated the first group.
Practicing in various ways also prove very effective in it. In a study of 1993 was compared about two women groups who trained students about free throwing. One group only practiced free throw, and the other group practiced different things. They practiced free throws as well as shooting from 8 and 15 feet distance from the basket. In the end, the group who practiced different types of shots, they performed better in the free throw line.
We can review our knowledge and eliminate our overconfidence.
Have you ever wandered you are running here and there for hours, just because you are confident about your destination that you will somehow reach there and do not think it necessary to ask anyone the way?  The sixth and final step will give you your knowledge to encourage you to review your knowledge and protect yourself from such mistakes. Overconfidence regularly promotes mistakes.  People usually assess their more on their previous performance and their knowledge. They think they really know how to win, comes more than that can, and so they hope to do well in future.
The military has also given it a name. They call it victory disease. A general can judge his ability because he has won many times before. There could be no better example than General George Armstrong Custer, who was constantly defeating enemies during the time of American Civil War. But it proved all wrong in 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He lead his 200 men against more than 1000 Native Americans. It’s believed that only one of all Custer's men was left. Hence reviewing your knowledge and understanding will help you deal with over-confidents.
For example, psychologist Art Markman was convinced that he know how to do the toilet works.  After all, he also used a lot during all day, and when he was a child, he opened the tank a few times to check the stopper and the handle were also tampered with. But one day he realized that he don’t know anything about a toilet, and if they were asked to open it and add it back, they might not be able to do it. Only after acknowledging his lack of knowledge he could ask himself the necessary questions like, "How does water flow to the toilet”? Where does it go after flushing? "And so he was ready for better learning.
By following these six steps you will become a better learner. Now, whatever you want to learn, whether it is to correct the toilets, improve your game or learn a new language, by adopting these simple exercises, you will become expert in your field of knowledge.
Conclusion
With effort and focus, almost anyone can become an expert or master of any field. But to do this, you will need to take time and use tried strategies. You just remember these six steps: Value, Target, Development, Extend, Relate and Rethink. With these methods you will be on the path of better learning.
What to do?
The next time when you are studying for your important exam, divide your learning into several sessions. All of us must have felt the anger of reading when we do not remember things throughout the day. To avoid these things, you have to be divide your studies into small pieces to improve your learning, which will be read in short time interval. Your brain needs a break to remember things too. so don't forget to take your break!

Wombwell Rainbow Interview
I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger.
The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.

The Interview
1. What inspired you to write poetry?
Poetry was my first (written) language. I intuitively wrote with line breaks since I was a girl. I didn’t call it poetry, but it was how I wrote. A kind of birth mark.
What has changed in my relationship to poetry is how I read, and my entanglement with editing. Writing is natural. Editing is more like design, or how I imagine carpentry. My brother is a carpenter. My grandfather was too. I just build things with different materials and tools. Words instead of wood. Punctuation marks instead of nails. When I edit, I want the poems to look me in the eye, sound good on the tongue, and tell some kind of story.
Essays are another matter. I know precisely when that started. I had to write an essay to apply to college. It felt like ice skating in outer space. Complicated, maybe even impossible. Now, I’ve grown to appreciate the process of writing essays, and am almost always tinkering with one. They help me observe and think. Essays are architectural, 2D dwellings for bigger ideas and worlds. I see a light and run into them without a plan, get lost in the chaos of the experience, and finally figure out what wants to be said. I feel a sense of wonder and satisfaction when they are done.
I write poems every morning, and whether they are “good” or not, they’re my medicine for living. They are my thermometer for authentic living. They help me know myself, and seek freedom despite whatever may be limiting me in the material world.
2. Who introduced you to poetry?
The first poet I remember hearing was Maya Angelou. Listening to her wasn’t just witnessing a vocalist and spoken word master, it was witnessing a woman being phenomenal herself. That’s what I remember first and foremost — “Oh! Look, a woman! Maybe I can be one too!” Hearing her made me feel like it was a good thing to be a woman. She was tall, with a wide arm span, and a voice that commanded attention. She took up space, but trampled no one. She wrapped her hair in stamped cloth, and wore canvas cargo pants. Her poetry was music, a polyrhythmic bumpa-dee-bump-dance of living. She baked Quiche Lorraine. I went home and found a pair of canvas cargo pants my own size. She’s been a lifelong inspiration.
I studied in Nicaragua and Mexico in my twenties, and dove into works of César Vallejo, Nicolás Guillen, Pablo Neruda, Roque Dalton, Ernesto Cardenal, Claribel Alegria, and Giaconda Belli. I read their poetry aloud to myself. That was how I developed an intimate relationship with Spanish, and, later, Portuguese via capoeira music. I was raised in California, and heard Spanish on the yard in school. Eventually, I picked it up, and poetry helped. The poet Francisco X. Alarcon welcomed me into his Spanish for Spanish Speakers class, and poetry came flooding in. Reading aloud, I loved the sound on my lips. Learning a language is a kind of love relationship. This happened to me in three languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese).
My mother’s first language was Hebrew, but my dad was monolingual English. He lost his mother’s native Russian, and I lost my mother’s Hebrew and Yiddish. I wish I’d learned the languages of my own origins (Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian), but I picked up the ones that loved me back, the ones I lived with.
3. How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?
I don’t want to feel dominated by anything, even great poets. If anything, poetry is about freeing myself from all kind of domination. I don’t seek to dominate or be dominated. I seek equilibrium and honesty. I seek wonder and gratitude for living.I am grateful for the presence of older poets. Since I am getting older every day, even my silver hair is a flag to the aging process. Thich Nhat Hanh said, “I am of the nature to die.” I watch older poets to see how they navigate living, and, also, aging. How can we live and write well at every stage of life? How can we be creative at every stage? I read and listen to ancestral poets, and I embrace my relationship to the archive. I feel them as extended family — people who were whispered into, just like me. Adrienne Rich. Mary Oliver. Toni Morrison. Zora Neale Hurston. I don’t compare myself, I just feel related. Living well is not a competition. I’m not trying to achieve or prove anything, just take advantage of being alive.
Unlike Bob Kaufman, I don’t want to disappear when I die. That is not because of ego, it’s because I want to remain in relationship with other writers always, whether I am living or not. The archive has unfathomable dimensions.
Intersectional women deserve to be in there along with everybody else. I want to be a part of that, even if I am just one tiny blue-green thread, or a strand of red-tangerine.
4. What is your daily writing routine?
My knee jerk reaction to that question is, “If I told you I’d have to kill you.” I guess I’m protective of the creative process. It’s a mysterious thing, not something you can just pick up in a supermarket by the dishwashing liquid. Although, maybe that could make a good grocery shopping poem.
I have daily and seasonal writing routines. As a working person, and head of household, I start my day early with writing and ashtanga before work. With limited time, I accumulate small pieces of writing throughout the academic year and rely on the slower summer months to piece mosaics together. I value my job, but my writing life needs time too. So, when other folks dream of summer vacations, I long for stretches of quiet time off the grid. Nine months a year belong to my students. The summers are mine, and I am loyal to them because writing is a necessity.
5. What motivates you to write?
I have a writing self that wants to be expressed. It is my duty to care for her by letting her write whatever she wants. I write to fumble around in the dark and pull out stories. I write to face these times, and shine some light on living in the 21st century. Writing satisfies my adventurous spirit, and helps me feel less powerless as a woman, as a single mom, as someone from an immigrant family where many of us have gone unnoticed, injured, or completely erased. I write to be surprised. It’s the shake-shake-shake of a brown paper sack with something hidden inside. Once I was in Panama working on a popular education project. There was a carnival tradition that involved a pillow case. You fumbled your hand around inside, landed on an object, and pulled it out. Jumbled inside the sack were everyday items and things that were taboo (For example, an enormous blue dildo). Face the mystery. Take a risk. Laugh. Gasp. Weep. Feel something. Write.
6. What is your work ethic?
Fierce. I’ve been called a work horse, and I think that’s pretty accurate. Maybe a work centaur. I write every day, even if it’s just 20 minutes of jottings, so that I know how I am, and what I am thinking about on a deeper level. If I did not need a job-job, I would wake up, do yoga, write all day, and take a walking meditation at night. My idea of a good time. Throw in some dancing and we’re set. Because of writing, even if one “job” ends, I’ll just return to my real-forever-job which is stringing words together. Writing gave me my life back. Wouldn’t you work hard for something that gave you such a gift?
7. How do the writers you read when you were young influence you today?
The books that I read to my children when they were young influenced me as much as those I read when I was a child. They gave me a second childhood, perhaps one I never had. I collect books and try to adopt their courage. The stacks are to get lost in. Find a stool and pull out a book. This also applies to music and dancing. This applies to visual art and film. This applies to ferris wheels and lagoons. It applies to public libraries and the internet.
8. Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?
I spent months this year in the clutch of Toni Morrison’s On Self Regard, before she passed. Her intellect is expansive. Just. Expansive. Among the living, I am enriched by the enthusiasm of local writers Adrian Ernesto Cepeda, Genevieve Kaplan, and Ikia Noel because they are great practitioners, advocates, and instigators of writing. Gayle Brandeis, Deena Metzger, and Dan Bellm are guides for me toward how to write and be an upstanding human. I delight in the work of Gloria Carrera, Natalia Toledo, Aracelis Girmay, Ross Gay, Tiana Clark, Natalie Diaz, Nikky Finney, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Yusef Komunyakaa. They crisscross different cultures and languages. Their sentences break things open. They inspire me.
9. Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?
I used to be a dancer and choreographer. Dancing required having a big open space, limber bodies, music, costumes, lighting, gels, sound equipment, a van, crates of costumes props and instruments. I needed 30 minutes to an hour just to warm up, and then hours for rehearsal.
Writing is a creative practice that is accessible to me at this stage of my life. All I need is a pen and notebook. With those two things, I can go anywhere.
10. What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?”
Write. Read. Observe. Express. Welcome the sound of your voice. Listen attentively to the world. Truth is a good pair of shoes. Don’t be afraid to put your work out there. Leap.
11. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.
My debut poetry collection EVEN THE MILKYWAY IS UNDOCUMENTED will be coming out in 2020 with Unsolicited Press. My son and I just recorded an audio book version and I’m excited about that. Recording that was memorable. I sat down at the microphone with him at the console. Yikes. Then I realized what I was about to do and what he was about to hear. “I am sorry. Some of this is hard,” I said. “I am honored,” he said. Just wow. Spoken word is a very particular kind of conjuring that I enjoy. Not enjoy. Adore. I don’t sing, but I will seduce the fuck out of the world with a sentence. It’s good fun. Serious magic.
I completed a collection of essays that is under review, have a new essay in the brain-que-que, and a collaborative poetry book on the horizon. I don’t want to say more until they are fully formed, but I’m really glad that writing keeps coming. That’s the whole point of completing things — make space for what wants to come next.
