GUTS has become my new Midnights - an album that at first listen I was unsure about that's become my on-repeat-no-skips-go-to choice because even the things I don't like are solid and the vibe is always what I'm in the mood for. I constantly have a song stuck in my head but they're all so catchy that the specific song changes regularly.
#both albums are soundwise perfect to me like my exact style and preference#the things im not as into are specific lyrics / vocal moments but i can tune that out pretty easily when im listening#i wouldnt say either is a true no skip album for me like melodrama but something about each is so compelling#midnights ive probably listened to 300+ times all the way through lmao guts is at ~25 in week 1#taylor swift#olivia rodrigo#thoughts

How It Sounds Is The Only Thing Important
I LOOOVE bad music, or at least more specifically music that should be bad but isn't. Theres something about finding new music, especially when it comes from forming new connections with people that put you on to things you wouldn't otherwise have found by yourself. Weird eclectic music holds a special place in my heart, theres a local university radio station that my friends put me on to that will play almost anything which makes tuning in such a mixed bag. You can tell within seconds whether the DJ is playing something skippable, something you would only listen to by yourself, or something you'd feel comfortable playing around your friends. Bird noises at 2am while youre smoking in a parking lot, songs in foreign languages, grating metal (the material), old classics, and experimental music all come over the airwaves to give you something new each time you listen. Songs that hit the sweet spot where they SHOULD sound bad but don't, take all that you are familiar with and flip it on its head like an abstract painting in a art museum. They take everything that should be conventional wisdom of how to make a song and push that a little bit further. A good singer or vocalist? Dont need that. Instruments? If you're creative enough you can make new sounds that other people who are only comfortable sticking within the confines of “traditional” instruments would never dream of and could never achieve. Below isnt the song Im reviewing, its an orchestra that plays with vegetables that I think is relevant enough to link it.
youtube
https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/articles/c127c7d1-a459-4f82-8c2d-38e27b940b72
If you think only think about music as something you can “recognize” instead of something that just sound that sounds good you’ll be limiting yourself creatively. If you’ve ever listened to a song in a foreign language that you dont know you might not have any context for the lyrics but they still can sound good. Regardless of whether or not it could mean something if you did learn the language if you dont, the listener can only comprehend it as something audibly interesting. You dont need to know music theory to create something that sounds good.
Alright with all that out the way lets get to the song, Debbie Debbie by Gary Wilson.
youtube
Gary Wilson looks like someone who’d randomly offer to give me shrooms to which I’d know with a certainty he couldnt be an undercover cop but would still be someone you’d be initially weary of. Despite this his catalogue is mostly about kissing girls and going to the pool but it takes a lot of genres that are familiar to you and expands on them in an experimental way that only someone weird could come up with. Everything about this seems almost off key or should be. A weird vocalist that you can tell isn’t renowned for their ability to shift between ranges with their voice is coupled with instruments that keep your interest by hitting a flow that begins to overshadow the vocal shortcomings only to change it all up with notes that almost sound like the musician is randomly banging away at their instrument. All this comes together with lyrics that don’t really have to make sense to make a song that still has moments that shine so brightly its amazing and could inspire the next musician who wants to stretch their comprehension of what sounds good. Thats what I like most about weird music, it can make you annoyed for most of a song only to hit a stride that solely manufactured chaos can bring out that makes everything worth it. And if someone more talented than myself found that they could take that and sample it to form something new and beautiful. All these factors contribute to music that make your ears feel emotions that flow between bliss and aural offensiveness. Those are the moments you cant get just by thinking about making everything perfect.

tunes to groove to! (an amateur music review)
good day to any fellow music fiends out there hahaha yes i’m well aware i’m talking to myself right now but truly i don’t care i have faith there are people out there on the hunt for new music so look! no! further! boy do i have some bops for ya:)))))
GOODIE BAG- STILL WOOZY
So let me start off by simply saying Still Woozy has absolutely stolen my mind body spirit soul i love this damn boy and his sound. goodie bag specifically SLAPS and it has such a psychedelic vibe to it that simultaneously makes me want to bop my bussy but also lay in the dark with some mood lighting you feel?? he has a sound that i can barely even explain because its so cool and different and just makes me feel like i shouldn’t have a care in the world:)
SUMMER DEPRESSION- GIRL IN RED
i don’t think i ever have jammed so hard to a song about depression in my life. i shouldn't be crumping to the lyrics “summer depression, theres so much time to question my life” but i am as i write this so yeah i recommend. i think a common theme with most of these songs is that they chill you out but you can also shake your a$$ to them so idk what more you could ask for. the irony of this song is just the best.
GIRLS GO WILD- LP
hooooooolyshit though wow. this here song masterpiece i’ve been praising for many a month now and it doesn’t get old. LP truly honestly is a badass and her raspy and edgy voice is sjhdkashd i b u s t. the little guitar moment at the beginning OH my god i love a good alternative moment. i n v e s t your time into this song.
OG LUV KUSH pt. 2- KAIIT
wow. a tune. really just something you can groove to and pretend you just got rid of a lame ass boyfriend. unless you did, then this will speak volumes i’m sure. UGH oh my god! a good RnB feel that just gets me goin i hope you vibe w it. when you reach the “so hard to please you, boy bye” repetition i hope you look at yourself in the mirror and sing it as if you’re singing to someone who just ISNT worth your time cause thats exactly what i do. n e x t
BODY- DANGER INCORPORATED
this some good shit right here good shit good shit. it’s definitely more of a lay down and chill kind of song but my ass can really make any song a dance song so hi nice to meet you i like to bop. the high pitched vocals i fuck with and its generally once again, a very different sound that i think isnt everyone's taste BUT i say give it a shot if you like the other songs listed:)
SUNFLOWER- REX ORANGE COUNTY
yeeeeeeeeah rex orange county. yes please hi yes thank you. this has been a frequently played song during my dance parties i have alone in my bedroom and no no one else is welcome. i managed to twerk to this song and that was also when i realized i could t w e r k. so yeah this song holds a place in my heart i guess. it starts off slow but she speeds up as do my little feet on the floor. i think this song is just a good song to play with friends and if anyone says to shut it off tell them to shut it up. shit makes my heart happy.
GOOEY- GLASS ANIMALS
this song oh my gooooodddd its kiiiiinda weird and almost makes me feel uneasy idk if thats just me but its just a mix of everything about it and i think you just have to listen for yourself. theres just something about it that i love so much like the lyrics are odd and the sound is odd but theres something about it and songs like this that i dig a lot. glass animals and still woozy really give me that same feeling but its cool im cool with it.
LUCY- STILL WOOZY (FEAT. ODIE)
this is truly a groovy ass song like as soon as it starts you’re like alright groove.exe has been launched. odie is wonderful on it. i really don’t have much to say other than that like its just a quality song that i urge you to search?? please?? i’m also just getting lazy with this lol and hungry so we’re cutting this short a bit
DANG!- MAC MILLER (FEAT. ANDERSON .PAAK)
My ass? shaking. yeah i’m sure many of you (lol literally no ones reading this) have heard this or generally just know who mac miller is. this song just speaks for itself like dang! thats a groove. mac miller? exquisite. anderson paak? divine. love it love them love these jams that i have listed here
so there it be brothers. i made this a little short but they’ll probably get longer and better once lovely people actually start following these lmao unless i lose all motivation to continue. but idk man that was fun cause i just get to talk about my favorite tunes while jamming to them so. i also have no clue what i’m really doing on here or if people actually like this type of thing but this doesn’t just have to be me chatting about songs, no no, lets start a discussion and share songs and maybe be friends idk?? also tips on how to grow this blog wouldn’t be terrible?? anyway guess thats it! hope someone gets down to these songs!

alright, so here’s my final top 43 with minor commentaries that no one asked for. also this is probably... not common, bUT WE LOVE SOME DIVERSITY. this is obviously personal taste, but im just gonna say i would die for all the songs in my top 10
43. Russia - alright, so this wasn’t originally this low on my list at all, but after hearing it live... holy shit. i feel really bad for her, but her vocals were tragic, to the point where i don’t even understand how this happened. sh00k
42. Georgia - okay see, this is just not working for me. this is the only song this year that i can never listen to all the way through, and for some reason it depresses me. it honestly gives me funeral vibes.
41. Iceland - oh, Ari. honestly i just find it all too cheesy, especially when you add his personality, given he’s a bundle of sunshine, too, and then it’s an overdose of sugar. the song is rather dated, and this is another one that kind of makes me feel... hhh. just, must we?
40. Germany - okay, look, this one i don’t have a great excuse for other than tthe fact it doesn’t do anything for me personally. i tried to like this song so much though, i swear i did, but the more i hear it, the more i dislike it. this is the one where i usually go out to grab a snack or a drink while it plays, because i just... i don’t like it, i’m sorry.
39. San Marino - *rubs at temple* listen originally i gave them the benefit of the doubt but the way they are suffering live makes me suffer, too. the awkward rapping, that mess of lyrics, the weak vocals.... it’s not great.
38. Israel - plot twist. this was originally my last, so compared to that this is still better. but i just reeeally don’t like this song. it annoys me, actually. makes me laugh, but when i see the odds it makes me cry. also, honestly, her live performances did nothing for me - other than the high notes in the very end, it was... whatever it was. i really can’t comprehend why everyone’s eating this up, but you do you guys.
37. Romania - i swear i sort of keep forgetting this song exists, oh my god. it’s just kind of a mess..? i don’t really know what it wants to be, maybe they also don’t know what it wants to be. in the very least she sounds good live.
36. Latvia - so this song... is also something that’s just sort of there, but i don’t feel a single thing. i’m not too fond of her stage presence when it comes to it, either, with all the dramatic hairflips. am i the only one who thinks she’s like jessica rabbit?
35. Lithuania - aww, Lithuania... puts me to sleep ;;; she has a nice, unique voice but i find myself incredibly bored during her performances. i was watching the amsterdam live and i didn’t even notice she switched to Lithuanian at one point, only when i saw the recap. probably not a great sign.
34. Belgium - she kept dropping on my list anyway, and after hearing her live, she just somehow got down here. first of all, honestly it has great quality - doesn’t grab me the slightest, though. i find the chorus disappointing...? “echoes echoes and goes...” i always keep expecting a bigger, powerful drop and i’m somehow let down every time. and her vocals live, just... oooooh no.
33. Sweden - *buries face in hands* Justin Bieber...? this song is something that we’ve all heard like 1000000 times before. furthermore, i can’t be the only one who’s annoyed that he doesn’t sing his chorus live, he just whispers over it? like...
32. Czech Republic - okay, this kind of goes hand in hand with Sweden for me. i like Miki, but this is very, very... i don’t wanna say outright cheap, so let’s just say basic. basically talk dirty to me. honestly, it’s basically the exact same thing. one of the many. next!
31. Estonia - she actually went quite up on my list, because i appreciate her talent, and couldn’t question that even if i tried. i mean yes, i’m honestly not into opera... but it’s not horrible. although in the end it becomes a bit too much for me personally.
30. United Kingdom - SuRie is amazing, i honestly love her so much for her personality?? icon. buuuut the song is still not great and it’s just an inch away from tipping towards annoying - but, i can enjoy this one.
29. Poland - it’s okay for what it is. they are having fun. but i don’t want to give it more credit than that, it’s something you can hear every day in a club, on the beach, on the radio... been there done that. also... *whispers* okay JOWST did it much better, i’m soRRY
28. Australia - fun, up tempo, catchy BOP. do i feel more than that? no, not really. Jessica is adorable, though ;;; i wish this was... more.
27. Finland - her NF performance did not convince me one bit, but the studio cut and her Amsterdam performance elevated her a bit on my list. but still not... enough? it’s... it’s okay.
26. F.Y.R. Macedonia - this grew on me, to be honest. i still don’t know if i really like the three-songs-at-once thing, but i learned to enjoy it.
25. The Netherlands - okay, so country is not my type of music at all, and he’s only here because i think it’s a decent entry, and he's really good live.
24. Slovenia - i really dig her voice, and i like the verses, and LOVE the pre-chorus. she’s great on stage. the only reason she’s not higher is because the chorus itself is... sigh, it leaves me a bit disappointed.
23. Moldova - they literally jumped 17 places ahead on my list, and i regret nothing. i woke up on them, even if it took a while. once that tacky performance from the NF was out of the way, i was into it. THIS MAKES ME WANT TO HAVE FUN WITH THEM, OKAY
22. Malta - another BOP, but it just works better for me than Australia, personally. i was worried about her live but i think she delivers. it’s often stuck in my head.
21. Cyprus - BOP after BOP. it’s good, catchy and fun, definitely works for what it is, and i always jam to it.
20. Croatia - okay, i really really like her voice?? there’s something about this specific female vocal that i love, and tbh the song isn’t bad at all.
19. Spain - i prefer the studio cut with them, honestly. i find it to be a really lovely song, but when they do it live i just don’t feel connected with them, because they are busy connecting with each other. there’s nothing wrong with that, they are adorable, but it’s just as high as it will go for me.
18. Ireland - listen, i love his voice. it’s so sweet... the melody stayed with me from the very first listen. i am well aware he will get lost in the semi, but i appreciate him. this is really good.
17. Austria - so here’s the thing, this was originally in my top 10, but i just kind of got over it? he is also good live, but that’s about it. the song is good, i dig the hozier vibes it has, it’s a radio friendly tune... i just like 16 other songs more.
16. Azerbaijan - okay this song gets a lot of hate, and i GET that this is just esc pop, but a good one? i really like her voice?? and the power the song has in it? i don’t know, i was so sceptical about this but i replayed it right after the first listen - it makes me feel good.
15. Norway - listen i love Alexander Rybak, but i was also so sceptical about his comeback, because why, you already won? but the live performance was honestly so good, like listen, this guy’s charisma is ON POINT. i still love the violin. i still love him. i won’t rate him higher, because yes, the lyrics could be better, but i still enjoy it a whole lot.
14. France - oh, i love them. very easy to get into, it’s lovely. not something that makes me catch my breath, but i really appreciate it still because i honestly love listening to it.
13. Armenia - Sevak is so on point vocally, um...? this song is a huge grower for me, and at this point i seriously just... it’s so good.
12. Albania - I’M STILL MOURNING THE PRE-REVAMP VERSION HHHHH.... but i still love it, and love Eugent aswell. he has amazing vocals, and he would definitely deserve a good place.
11. Serbia - okay okAY OKAY I LOVE THIS SO MUCH??? the ethnic vibes, the whole... composition, their voices, it’s one big massive yes.
10. Switzerland - *cries softly* listen i fucking love them? Corinne’s vocals are EPIC. this song is just really good, although people are sleeping on it like they are knocked out. but they are doing great and i’m very proud of these Zibblingz. damn.
9. Ukraine - wELL I LOVE MÉLOVIN, WHO WOULD’VE THOUGHT. he is a Performer™. his voice is amazing, and this song just doesn’t leave my head, i don’t even care about his ‘aghdshfdfzgz’, he’s that good.
8. Denmark - talk about epic? this whole song just raises me to a whole another spiritual level tbh. i can just close my eyes and see the sea and... hear the soundtrack of a fantasy movie, and i’m all for it. also, he’s REALLY good every time.
7. Bulgaria - i loved this song to begin with, but their live performance really gave it the last push. they harmonize their vocals in such a beautiful way, and i was afraid it wouldn’t work so much live, but it does. it really does, and i’m loving it.
6. Hungary - i can’t believe my country makes it to my top ten like... the 3rd time in a row, considering i never liked our entries before. but honestly AWS is.. wow, i was shook from the moment i first heard the song, and i LOVE how daring we’re being lately. i’m incredibly proud of them. they have so much energy, and in Amsterdam, they were definitely my favorite - i’m shocked. they deliver, they are an explosion. Örs’ vocals are AMAZING, and they never falter, even if this song is so demanding in that aspect? fucking... respect.
5. Montenegro - i aggressively love this song, maybe even love it more the more people ditch it. this is so dramatic and epic?? he is another singer who delivers vocally whenever it’s live? this song is... i LOVE the balkan sound, the musical-esque melodies, the power in his voice, just... i personally love it more than Adio from Knez, come fight me.
4. Portugal - i feel entranced every time. she grabs me, and doesn’t let go. this whole song is like a sweet dream, to be honest, and i love it sooooo much. i adore when isaura joins in. i just... it goes straight to my heart, god bless. beautiful.
3. Greece - this song... is so magical? like, pure magic. i’m so happy greece is finally doing it right, i’m... yianna is an actual greek goddess, and her voice... dude. this is art.
2. Belarus - definitely my most played song this year, oh my god. (okay, i might play Navsegda a bit more, but Forever is amazing too) the revamp didn’t ruin it, it gave it more personality. i love his tone changes? i love his soft, beautiful voice, and how he plays with it? guys alekseev is brilliant, and i would actually probably sob if he didn’t make the cut. this song does things to me. just.. wow.
1. Italy - there is not one other song this year that makes me think ‘winner’. just... there isn’t any other. it has everything; two amazing male vocals (and that contrast between them, gOD THAT CONTRAST!), an amazing, original song, an important message, the soul... what more do you want? this is a masterpiece. makes you stop and listen. honestly, if they don’t win, i really don’t see the point.

Weezer - Death To False Metal Review
Weezer dont need an introduction, most people know who they are in some way or another. This album, Death To False Metal was released in 2010 to mixed reviews, and debuted at number 48 on the billboard 100.
From the get go, I wasnt impressed to be honest. The vocals on turning up the radio were, for want of a better word, awful. they sounded out of tune the entire song and were grating to listen to and made the entire song feel far longer than its 3 minute 37 second run time. the instrumental wasnt great, very simple and nothing to write home about, apart from this weird synth sounding thing that shows up in the second half of the song that was at just the right pitch that it just drilled into my head the whole time it was there. not a good way to open an album at all.
The instrumental on ‘I dont want your loving’ was definitely an improvement, it felt like they had actually put some effort into this one, and was actually pretty fun overall. The vocals too were better, however I would not go as far to say they were good. just tolerable and fairly generic overall. an improvement on the last song for sure.
By ‘Blowin’ My Stack’ i had realised that the drums had literally no variety at all, they could have recorded one drum track and used it for all of the songs ive listened to so far. very bland. As for the rest of the instrumental, i rather liked it honestly. Fun to listen to, and then the key change in the subsequent solo and the solo its were really enjoyable, certainly pricked my ears up. Vocally, once again tolerable and nothing more. Cant say im a fan or Rivers Cuomo’s voice up until now, and considering how samey it has been up till now, i cant see that opinion changing through the course of the album.
Everyone is a weird one. there are some really interesting musical choices in there, the bass being a lot more prominent than in the rest of of the album, they start playing with a bit of dissonance and slightly more agressive vocals, and i found myself quite enjoying it. with the exception of the chorus. such a bland and boring chorus, both lyrically and instrumentally, it feels like its not even from the same song and really pulled me out of the enjoyment of the song every time it came around because it is so confusing to me that it would be there in this specific song.
Immediately following this is I’m a Robot, which is one of the most annoying, upbeat songs i have ever listened to in my life. I can understand what they are trying to go for, with the upbeat happy instrumental and vocal delivery whilst talking about how bland and repetitive the subjects life is, and how samey it is to everyone else in the world, but its so surface level and generic that it doesnt work for me at all. I could maybe get behind it if it went more into depth than ‘i have to go to work’ and ‘I have an ordinary family and life’. It just falls so flat and is a waste of a great idea.
Im not even going to talk about trampoline, odd couple or autopilot with any depth because they are so generic and boring that dedicating anything more than a sentence to them collectively would feel like a mighty waste of time and energy.
Unbreak My Heart is a 4 minute cliche filled croon towards an unnamed someone with no real point or purpose. The most interesting thing that happens in this song is a key change or two. And for something that feels like its being presented as a heartfelt ballad is just laughable. especially the high pitched vocals at the end which are so weak that it actually made me laugh out loud
Overall, this album aint a good one. there are a couple of breif interesting moments surrounded by about 35 minutes of the most generic, boring or just outright bad music, and if im being brutally honest, this album does not need to exist. it is just dull. 3/10

Live Performance Comparison
Live performance analysis:
I’ll be comparing Frank Turners set from Reading festival 2016 (specifically “Four Simple Words” to Twenty one Pilots concert at the Manchester Arena (Specifically “Car Radio”)
Car radio:
The live performance set up is just Vocals, Piano and drum kit. There is a lot of Sustain and possibly some added effects like reverb coming out the P.A. But apart from that there are only the added sound effects and synths added during the instrumental breaks.
During his performance Tyler Joseph gets up from his piano and lets the audience sing the more complicated rap section of the verse. This is only one example of his crowd participation techniques. Others include, encouraging the audience to sing along the more memorable tune during the refrains (the oooo o o o owo parts), commanding the audience to jump up off their feet just before the drop and further encouraging them by jumping off the piano in an explosion of energy and continuing to dance and move around the stage during this period. The last interesting technique he displays is his use of the arena as he moves off of the stage to a b style stage which is atop a podium in the middle of the arena. He finishes the song off here with a dramatic face reveal when he takes off the mask during the last line of song. He almost uses the mask throughout the song to create suspense and then uses the climax of the ending to his advantage and furthers its impact with the face reveal. I believe it’s supposed to be more of a metaphor than him genuinely trying to conceal his identity as but some would argue that the idea stems from his differing personality when on stage compared to in real life.
During the song he doesn’t seem to make any obvious interaction or communication with the other band member on stage. This could be put down to the fact they have a lot of confidence in each other and know that’s it would be unnecessary during the song to communicate as it might take away from the performance that they are trying to achieve.
The lead singer (Tyler Joseph) uses a variety of vocal techniques throughout the song. He utilizes some impressive jumps between his legato and staccato notes during the rap verses as well as his melismatic ability in the hook sections. Even more he seems to have incredible breath control because not only does he appear to rap for very extended periods of time but he manages to move around the stage whilst doing it, which im sure makes breathing a lot harder especially when projecting so much. The last interesting technique is his screams during the end chorus. He remains in his chest voice but you can hear the harshness of his vocals possibly due to strain but I imagine that he can perform like that quite comfortably as he performs it at every show he plays.
Four simple words:
So frank turner doesn’t play guitar for this performance of Four Simple Words, instead he sticks to the microphone for this one and starts off strong with a very chest voice lead introduction of the contrastingly slower beginning of the song.
The first main thing ill point out in this performance is his interaction with the crowd very early on. He comes down off the stage with microphone in hand and continues to sing the intro directly at the fans whilst touching people’s hands and riling them up leading into the b section of the song with an “ALRIGHT READING FESTIVAL, LETS FUCKING DO THIS!” He then remains in front of the crowd throughout the second verse and even climbs on to the barrier to sing over the crowds head until it gets to the instrumental section after the second chorus where he dives into the crowd whilst the energy is at its peak and people are going mad. This type of interaction with the audience makes people feel really involved and the diehards get a kick out of being one of the few who get to hold up the surfing band member. It’s a great way of reminding the crowd that they’re being involved and it’s also very entertaining to watch.
As far as tone goes, He maintains a calm level of projection throughout the whole first verse and chorus and appears to move up a little bit on his register to accentuate the heaviness that accompanies the second verse and chorus as well as the bridge before returning to a more casual and calmed tone to sing the altered chorus. It’s during this time that the focus is then put upon the rest of the band as he makes his return to the stage during an instrumental break. The crowd gets a to see how frank turner interacts with his fellow band members by acknowledging his guitarists solo and jokingly detuning one of his strings. It’s during this time the crowd has a moment to receive some sort of relief as the energy drops whilst this slow section plays and they get to watch the band members interact. This appears to just be a rouse as the song quickly picks back up as the energy level s rise, frank turner continues to move and jump around the stage wildly and chant his lyrics to the vast audience. For a split second during the interval of the last pre chorus to outro chorus, you can hear frank scream almost at the top of his voice, almost like a death scream/growl before continuing with the rest of the song. This is another example of his live performance techniques because he never records anything like that on his records so I’ll put it down to artistic creativity and his improvisational ability.
When the song normally ends in the record version, it appears during the live edition, frank decided to create a crowd chant out of the ending melody. Again, one more example of his crowd participation techniques as he encourages the audience to sing with them for the last time before the end their set.

Whilst on stage, frank turner and his Sleeping souls (Band Members) all wear smart suits and ties with a bit of variety between the different musicians. I believe this is to achieve some level of professionalism in their image and the way people see them and remember them, but it could also be argued that they like to take pride in their work and their appearance whilst on stage. Personally I think it looks very professional but there’s enough charm in each members variety of clothing to keep it casual and cool. For example, the guitarist s converse sticks out in my mind as contrasting of his suit jacket.
During the final build up to the end of the song you can see the lead guitarist head up to the drummer so that the drummer’s indication of when the song ends was clearly noted by the guitarist and surrounding musician. This way they can all sync up and end the song on the same beat with what I assume was a pre rehearsed ending.
So whilst looking at both of these performances, there are a lot of similarities and differences of which I’ve extracted. For starters, Both main vocalists broke the confines of the stages they were performing on to really show the audience that they are not just watching a band on TV, but that they are actually at a show. Coming off the stage and into the audience really gets people’s attention as everyone is focused towards the stage, as soon as the point of focus is drawn elsewhere, people start to get excited and curious as to what’s happening and what’s going to happen. However, Frank turner’s performance was also different in that respect as he actually approached the crowd and made multiple individual interactions with a multitude of fans and audience members, whereas Tyler Joseph left the stage in the middle of all the confusion with the haze of the smoke from the stage so he could move to a B stage where he did not directly interact with any one crowd member.
Another point I will mention is that the performances differ for obvious reasons and that is because frank turner is performing for a festival audience whereas Tyler Joseph is performing for an Arena audience of people who have paid just to see him, compared to frank turner who has to please a wide array of music overs including his own big fans. With this in mind, Frank turners set and performance was very much tailored to the festival goers experience with high energy, crowd surfing/participation and coordinated sing along’s. You could even say that the audience is part of the experience during frank turner’s performance. On the other hand, Tyler Josephs performance was more of a theatrical performance where the audience participations isn’t encouraged as much to dance and sing along so much as they are to be silenced and astounded by the music and visuals from the stage. Even his little stunt at the end of the song is reminiscent of a magic trick where the performer disappears only to reappear a short distance away soon after. A very theatrical thing to do.
In conclusion, both performances were extremely effective and well-tailored for the audience who were present respectively at each performance.
