The Venture Bros Rewatch Notes: the terrible secret of turtle bay
The art style is just different enough to be really weird yet interesting to watch
I honestly hadn't finished this episode till today bc I couldn't get over how bad the writing was for the opening scene in japan
Doc pops pills ALL the time it's practically a conversation closer for him
The intro to Brock being framed like how Dr. Girlfriend is framed in the yard sale episode: as sultry sex appeal - whoever drew that had an understanding. Also his tiny little jean shorts? Jesus
Brock really just not giving a shit and not caring what Doc is telling him is so funny. And between the mummy and the gator just how easy is it to
I love his little green shirt I think it's cute. Also the way this show is SO OLD the lines honestly look a little glitchy
I seriously don't understand how the Monarch can afford all the henchmen and the cocoon and everything like ik they say he had the fitzcarraldo trust fund but how much fucking money was in there? a hundred million in 80s money?
Between the U Ray and removing all of Scamps skin....which......BARF..... Doc seems to be, not smarter, but actually accomplishing things? he doesn't seem as adrift and like he can't finish anything
Billy Pete and Richard are all at the UN why are Billy and Pete there besides to look gay
The comic book 60s batman affect of brock punching people is hilarious and so old school
I loved the gag of the henchmen in the fake meteor getting trapped and dying on the lawn. Honestly the Monarch was so funny he shot the cabbie, the cop, and when he was out of darts he responded totally normal like to the homeless man. And his wings getting stuck in the train was so funny
The sex worker honestly was hilarious she was so nice and the scene at the end between her and brock is actually really charming
The ninja ceo being a technology fetishist is hilarious
INCREDIBLY racist episode overall somehow it has a gift in being able to pack the most offense into a single line, so even though the racism only is blatant a few times it does set the tone for the whole show. Makes me remember how in the butterglider episode brock is leading black pirates in chains. And the fact that the episode right after this is the one in Mexico? Like, hammer and publick reeeeally went hard on using racist tropes as comedy in the beginning huh

Man I've written 28 fics for rise, that's insane, anyway here's a master post, sort of? I realized some people either A) may not know how many different fics I've written or B) not realized "oh he wrote that" sooo
One Shots
Don't You Care? – Donnie and Leo centric, post-movie. Donnie isn't always great with feelings, and when he fails to understand Leo's, he tries to find a way to fix it. Doing so forces him to unpack some of his own thoughts on their victory over the kraang as well.
To Bridge a Canyon of your Own Design – Splinter centric, post-movie, a bit of a retrospective on his relationship with his sons, his depression, and him trying to move away from his unhealthy coping mechanisms.
I Didn't Vote for You – Leo's the leader now, and Donnie always finds ways to argue with him about it. Leo wants to find out why Donnie has such a problem with how he's trying to lead the team, but it turns out that isn't the problem. It's simply the fact that Leo's the leader at all.
I'd Give Anything – Donnie-centric. A slightly alternate take on the movie's ending where instead of just firing a drill into the portal, Donnie jumped in, and ends up losing an arm in the process. But he has to kind of piece all of that together as he recovers in the med bay, talking to each of his family members.
Grappling With Things Beyond Your Control – Gift fic for my friend Bat! Donnie-centric, post season 2. Suddenly getting ninpo with no prior training causes Donnie's powers to start to run amok, and on top of that he has to help his family not only find a new home but move into one. It's a lot to balance, maybe too much to balance.
Four Turtles in your Corner (Store) – A silly fic about April being out of supplies for her period, and in desperation sends the boys to go get her some. I'm sure four reptilian mutants have competent knowledge on what humans need for things like this.
Now Lie In It – Big Bang fic! Takes place during season 2. Leo won't sleep, and ends up getting on Donnie's nerves. The softshell's solution to the problem is a simple sleep potion, but when he pours too much into Leo's tea his brother won't wake up. Time to force April and Draxum to go find an antidote while he hides his mistake from the rest of his family. (it sounds angsty but it's comedic, actually)
What Will You Leave Behind – Big Bang fic! Doomed timeline, Raph centric. Raph is the first of his siblings to die during the war. And while he does everything he can to be their ever present pillar as they eventually follow after, he can't help but loathe the fact that the ones still down there are suffering and he can't do anything to help.
My Words Died With You – Gift fic for Bat! Doomed timeline, Donnie centric. Donnie quit speaking when Raphael died, months later he still isn't. His family tries to help him cope with this, even Raphael does from the afterlife, but it may not be enough.
VHHB series
(These are all post-movie)
My Roommate the Troubled Time Traveler (One Shot) – Casey and Draxum centric. Casey Jones Jr. isn't coping too great with being in the present, and trying to live in the lair isn't helping. So Mikey has the GREAT idea to convince Draxum to let Casey be his roommate. The alchemist thinks this is a terrible idea, but he might be able to help the kid far more than he realizes.
Violet Hues and Holly Blue (Completed) – Donnie centric. 8 months after the kraang invasion and Donnie's been the reigning champ in the Battle Nexus for a while, in his attempts to improve his mystic abilities. But this draws the attention of a business focused wasp named Holly Blue who offers to help sell his tech designs in the Hidden City. Donnie ends up agreeing, having to keep that secret from his family too, but eventually they're going to find out. (This is only a partial summary haha sorry, fic is heckin long)
Missing Pages – Just some VHHB extras, but hey it features Big Mama being herself, Lou Jitsu maiming some people, Donnie dealing with past blood on his hands and uuuuh Leo and Holly becoming friends (what a mood whiplash)
You Are Loved (Completed)– Two-shot fic about the Caseys (of the Senior and Junior variety). Casey Jr. wants to know why his ninpo sprung up so suddenly, and in his search to find out discovers his family is much closer than he realizes. Meanwhile Cassandra is struggling with her place among the Hamatos, it doesn't help when she finds out they're keeping a pretty big secret from her. Hopefully they can make it up to her.
The Sun and Icarus (Completed) – Mikey-centric. He's been doing pretty good at developing his mystic abilities lately, but now they're starting to explode, pretty violently. And it turns out if this keeps up the whole ordeal could just kill him. Better find a way to put a cap on it, or something to that effect. (Wow more power overloading fics from ME)
Girls' Night (One Shot) – April centric one shot, also April/Sunita. She's just trying to have a fun night out with the girls, inviting Holly Blue along for the ride, but maybe that was a mistake because in her attempts to playfully tease the wasp, she's suddenly forced to confront her own crush.
And For my Next Trick (One Shot) – Leo-centric one shot. Leo's getting frustrated with his lack of progress on his mystic powers, and with Hueso's advice decides to shift his focus to a different kind of magic, stage magic. With Hueso Jr.'s help, he plans to put on an entire show, which should be fine if some other magician doesn't show up to steal the show.
Look Up Hero in the Dictionary (Completed) – Raph centric. Raph's feeling a bit too idle in the city lately, with only minor crimes going on, but in his wish for something exciting a strange explosion happens at an apartment building. He attempts to help everyone escape, but a yokai holding the building together stays behind, and on top of that charges Raph with the task to take care of her child. Have fun taking care of a powerful psychic seven-year old, Raph.
What You're Made Of (One Shot) - Casey Jr. centric. Casey is getting frustrated with discovering weird things about his body like skin problems and peanut allergies. Draxum suggests he find out who his other parent is to get an idea of his genetic history, but when he finds out who it is, he's kind of ticked off that his family never told him. (this is a bio dad Raph fic for the record).
The Knight and the Dragon (Completed) - Jasonnie centric. Episodic chapters about Donnie and Jason learning to be friends and then becoming more than friends. Very sappy, a bit of angst, a lot of me making up lore about Jason.
Here's To You Holly Blue (Completed) - Grief fic, OC, Donnie and Leo focused. Takes place roughly 17 years later when Holly Blue's health takes a drastic drop and she won't be coming out of it.
Off Colors AU (Separated AU)
Off Colors: Contrasts (Completed) - Covers season 1. Leonardo's spent most of his life believing he's an only child because his little brother was kidnapped when they were only toddlers. But a rescue mission to the Hidden City with his best friend April results in him finding out he actually has three siblings. And in the span of a couple of weeks he finds out all of them are alive and, unfortunately, working for bad guys. He's going to try everything he can to stop them and convince them to come home, but it may be a fools errand.
Other Chaptered Fics
An Alien Invasion Happened but That's Not Really What This is About (Completed) - Long ass title. Jason-centric. Hi I wrote a novella sized fic about what happens to this kid during and after the events of the movie. Watch him attempt badly to cope with trauma while also fixing his relationship with his very queer dad who loves him a lot.
Artificial Phoenix (Completed) – Lou Jitsu died in the arena but then Big Mama said no no no! So Draxum brings him back to life while mutating four turtles so Lou Jitsu said NO NO NO! And he took them and ran. Alternate take on the events of the show, where Splinter is undead and unmutated, and unfortunately does not keep his soul in his body the entire time, leaving his sons grieving and desperate to get him back.
Jasonnie things
Not Part of the Plan (One Shot) – Donnie centric. Despite knowing time travel exists, Donnie is still surprised to find his future self in his lab. But his excitement at the possibilities is swiftly crushed as his future self has an easy time embarrassing him. He hopes he can at least gather some useful information in the process, but he slowly begins to wonder if he even wants answers to all these questions.
You Have to Let Him Go (One Shot) – Donnie centric also sad as hell. I literally just wanted to write about how Donnie's husband hecking dies. Read this if you want to be miserable. (or if you hate Jase I guess ??? alskdjf man got char grilled (I have to make jokes to keep myself from being upset shh))
I'll Put the Knife in Your Hand (Completed) – Well, now that Donnie heard about his possible future husband, he's determined to at least get to know the guy. Unfortunately his family is far more cautious about this than he seems to be. AKA Four times Donnie's family believes Jase is planning to stab him in the back, and the one time he actually does.
ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (One Shot) - Donnie is messing around with his mind machine again, and in the process ends up erasing part of his memory. Specifically the memories about Jase, and Jase is barely handling this well. Good thing Donnie's brothers who totally and absolutely are on good terms with Jase are there to help. Maybe.
Dual Dragons (One Shot) - Collab fic with @there-wolf ! A fic in which our versions of Jason end up encountering each other and even switching universes temporarily, giving them a window into how their life could be different (for better or worse).

I'm feeling the need to be a hater but in a harmless and ultimately meaningless way, so join me around this barrell and lets shoot some motherfucking fish
Disclaimer: I am not telling you you can't enjoy these movies, or judging your taste if you loved them. This is literally just me being a hater about movies that happen to bug me personally for various reasons.
*of these random 10 11 movies I personally really hated
** obligatory disclaimer that I did not pay to watch this movie, JKR did not make a single penny out of my morbid fascination with cinematic trainwrecks
(despite what this list suggests, I watch a lot of movies that aren't cgi-heavy blockbusters, but having a specific interest in movie adaptations of comic books means I watch a lot of really terrible cgi-heavy blockbusters)
Anti-propoganda below the cut
Spawn: this movie hurts to look it. One of the single most visually unpleasant experiences of my life, and I'm including recovering from major surgery in that.
Batman v Superman: the entire plot hinges on people believing Superman shot a man to death with a gun. A less significant but unavoidable plot point involves Lex Luthor giving someone a jar of his own piss as a death threat. Compared to that, the Martha thing barely registers as stupid.
Cats: is it as bad as the viral reviews claimed? Sadly no. Did I almost strain a muscle trying not to laugh too loudly at how terrible it was when I saw it in the cinema? Absolutely.
Fantastic Beasts: none of the FB movies could reasonably be described as good, but the third one really lends credence to the JKR black mould poisoning theory.
The King's Man: they very clearly ran out of filming time/locations due to covid, and then for some reason instead of shelving what cannot have been a particularly expensive production, they decided to edit together what little footage they had and release it as one of the most fascinatingly incoherent movies of the last decade.
Last Airbender: the very rare movie that actually is as bad as the negative hype, this may have the worst use of cgi superpowers in all of cinema.
Fant4stic: if you don't have depression, but want to know what it feels like, watch this movie. That utter emptiness you're now feeling? That's what depression feel like. You don't feel bad, necessarily. You just feel nothing.
Transformers: none of the bayformers movies are good, but Last Knight is the only one which just straight up doesn't make sense. It's like someone took the strawman 'terrible soulless entirely CGI blockbuster' movie people use in tumblr arguments about hollywood, and decided to actually make it.
Black Adam: I feel bad about how terrible this film is, because it was a genuine passion project, and it has a great cast, but it also has the worst colour-grading and some of the worst editting I've ever seen. If a group of untallented first year film students got trapped in purgatory with dwayne johnson, pierce brosnan, and manual editting equipment from the 1930s, and had to make a superhero film in order to escape, this is the film they'd make.
TMNT: this film just makes me irrationally angry. It feels like a bad youtube skit about 'what if michael bay made an animated kids movie' but it's real and it cost $150 million
Flash: this was going to be a 10 option poll, but then I remembered this movie includes CGI christopher reeve, against the express wishes of christopher reeve, and WB went ahead and released it after Ezra Miller was arrested for kidnapping, and then it had the gall to also be a terrible film in almost every way.

How much I've watched of various tmnt media (that I know about) (and that I am not forgetting currently) (with sometimes negative opinions attached)
Mirage - none at all, I'm really not sure it's my thing, although I am curious about the orginal personalities
87 - have watched it all, loved it including Red Sky, and am currently watching it again
90s movie - lots of fun has one of the best Aprils. There are two sequels I think and I should watch them (although I'm a little annoyed they exist because Shredder's death from the first movie should have been permanent for the humour value)
The Next Mutation - no, although I probably wouldn't hate it. It sounds very silly but I can do silly
Turtle Tunes - I watched some of it. It's terrible, but it's also funny in a kind of embarrassing way. Leonardo's rowboat amused me unreasonably
03 - probably the best plotted/best worldbuilding. I watched up through season four and then made the mistake of watching Turtles Forever so I've been holding off on season five until I'm no longer mad at the cast because I enjoy it and don't want to watch it in a bad mood
07 movie - this should have been so much better than it was, great Raph vs Leo fight though. That was iconic
12 - I watched all of it, despite not liking it as much as 03
IDW - I gave up part way through the secret history of the foot clan. Like 12 it really really wants me to care about Splinter's tragic backstory and like 12 I did not. I keep hearing things about it that sound like it gets good later but I've forgotten what was going on and I don't want to reread the bits I've already slogged through
Bay Movies - I have not watched them but I kind of want to find out if they're that bad
Rise - loved it! I've watched it three times I think, maybe more for some episodes, but it's a lot shorter than 87
Mutant Mayhem - I thought it was good but didn't enjoy it. Unsure whether I want to watch the follow up series

Its like 2am and a just hada crazy thought
What if the Oroko Casey reveal happens often Casey's bio father com3s back to New York, and before shredder finds out Casey's and his bio father bump into each other. At first Arnold doesn't recognize him but casey does, and runs to the turtles lair out of fear or shame or something, cause the guy that beat you and left you for dead is back. Anyways he runs to the lair were karia is hanging out, she's already benn revealed as splinters daughter and all that, and she see him panicking and stuff. So she runs over check on him. She asks him what's wrong as does the rest of the boys, a little confused on why Karia cares so much about jones, and he responds with "He's back" or whatever and they push farther and he says "my bio dad's back" or whatever. Now the boys don't know why that's an issue, but Karia does. So she says "we must tell father immediately" or whatever. And the boys think she's going to tell splinter, but she grades casey and runs out the lair. Even more confused the fallow her. All the way to The Shredder's lair. Were the reveal happens. Now Arnold being back is just a plot devise and is taken care of immediately. But do you see my vision on this? Its such a cool idea right? Kinda fucked up but cool nun the less
Sorry for any Grammer or spelling mistakes. It 2am for me and my brain ain't functioning and I've been relying on auto correct and the bar on top of the phone keyboard to write this.
~🧿 anon
First off don't worry about any spelling or grammar.
It's all good, if I ever can't tell what something says I'll just ask.
It's all good.
Second of all.
Holy shit that's amazing, and fits so well into this AU like fuck man someone's been taking notes.
Arnold coming back isn't something I thought of but damn its good.
Especially because we know he left New York a free man.
Casey was only a kid when his dad left him for dead.
But he would recognise the man anywhere.
And suddenly he's not Oroku Casey, the guy who beat his father's best men in combat without even trying.
He's a kid.
He's scared.
His legs carry him to the nearest safe spot: the lair.
The turtles don't notice him at first as their dealing with Karai.
But she does.
Any teasing, joking or other banter dies the second she sees him.
Casey looks terrible.
His whole body is shaking, he's not holding himself tall and confident like usual but hugging himself, slouching.
Trying to make himself look smaller.
"He's back... He's back.."
He's talking barely louder than a whisper but it echos around them.
Karai is their at his side instantly, assessing him for injuries and taking his shaking hands in hers.
"He's back..."
Her grip on him tightens.
She never forgot the sight of Shredder carrying Casey's small broken body into their home.
How he'd flinch at every sound and hide under his blanket in the med bay.
The way the only man he trusted around him was his rescuer.
She remembers how Shredder took her aside and explained his condition.
How he was family now.
Despite being months older than her, Karai fell into the role of protective sister very well.
She gained his trust.
She sat at his side while he recovered, teaching him Japanese and holding his hand.
Karai could kill for Casey.
... And it seemed she would.
They leave the lair.
Hand in hand.
Karai knows she probably should've made a lie up or something to keep Casey's identity a secret.
While she never cared for her biological family, he had made friends in them.
Knowing who he was would surely destroy those bonds.
But it didn't matter when he was crumbling.
No facade was worth not being able to hug and comfort her brother.
She would deal with the consequences later.
"We're going to father, now."
Watching Casey break down in Shredders arms was deja vu all over again.
He had always been clingy.
Always been touch starved and overly affectionate.
And it only made him look smaller being held in his father's arms as he rocked him like a child.
Shredders eyes were impossibly soft, no doubt rembering all those times like Karai was.
But their was steel in them.
Rage.
Anger.
That someone was hurting his son.
"He won't get near you, he won't even breathe near you."
He promised.
He meant it.
Karai meant it too.
Casey shook his head, gripping his dad's cloak like a safety blanket and let out a shuddering sob.
Karai squeezed his shoulder and left, for ninjas the turtles made themselves very visible.
She wouldn't allow them to hurt Casey.
Casey...sweet, dumbass, hurting Casey who trembled at her touch and hated himself for showing weakness but was in the only place he felt safe to do so.
Casey who was crying, who would cry, cry and cry until his body couldn't handle it and drift off.
And Karai would sit at his side with their father and coax him out.
If that fucker set him behind she would kill him.
She would set the world on fire if it would make him smile.
Their father felt the same.
Love your vision.
Though I'd definitely have Casey end up having to confront his bio dad, say Karai or the turtles get hurt and he jumps in.
That and Karai dealing with the turtles and telling them if they try to hurt him she'll kill them and they believe her.
... And ask her to lead the way to this Mr Jones.

Book 1: Intertwined Destinies
Chapter 1
Fandom: Avatar the Last Air Bender
Summary: Music night washes over Iroh. The crew’s attention  on each other means no one notices  their allegedly ill prince slipping over the side of the Wani and onto the dock.
Zuko, as The Blue Spirit, is leaving to meet another White Lotus Bud agent to exchange information on the Earth Armies for similar details on Fire Nation troops.
The White Lotus Buds are more successful than Iroh expected. Sometimes he thinks the war would end in days if they left the operatives in charge.
The White Lotus Buds were inspired by Zuko himself. It wasn't difficult to connect The Blue Spirit’s earlier escapades with Zuko. Not once one realized there were connections to make.
Iroh does not know when the sneaking began, though he has his suspicions. Ten year old princes don’t go missing for days on end easily. And there's the  ambiguity surrounding  Azulon’s death and Ursa’s sudden flight. When it started doesn’t truly matter when Zuko will not speak of it.
Shaking off his wandering curiosity, Iroh lets himself be drawn into the singing of an old sea shanty. It helps keep an old man awake, which he will need if he wants to be alert for his nephew’s return later that night.
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Violence, Strong Language, References to Child Abuse, Aftermath of Genocide, War
Characters: Zuko, Katara, Blue Spirit, Painted Lady,Sokka, Aang, Toph, Suki, Iroh, Kanna, Bumi, Ty Lee, Azula, Jet, Paku, Haru, Tyro, The Boulder, Smeller Bee, Jeong Jeong, Teo, Yue, Yugoda, The Wani Crew, Hei Bai, Arnook, Lieutenant Jee, Other Cast, Original Characters, Zhao

Chapter Preview
Sokka stomps his feet against the  iron deck of the abandoned Fire Nation ship beneath him and pulls the arctic fox-bear skin lower over his face. Until recently he’d thought the mask-hood combo Gran Gran had insisted he keep was ridiculous. He might technically be a White Lotus Bud, but much like being a man of the tribe, it was in name only. Despite his eighteen years he’d never even been ice dodging.
Then he’d received word from Gran Gran that he’d be meeting with another operative, The Blue Spirit himself. To say that Sokka was excited was to put it mildly. The Blue Spirit was a legend in their organization. The top operative the White Lotus had to offer. And Sokka was going to meet him tonight! Though his excitement had waned in the last  three hours and several degrees.

This should be terribly sad. What would on any other day be sacred ground - this monastery that birthed century defining masterpieces - is exposed to the bones for commercial re-consumption, like some whale display in a museum. What once was a hidden kingdom is now nothing more than prime real estate; the halcyon days of high art have evaporated in the sterile light of Zillow listing photography. The air of 'greatness' has vacated the premises. One parting irony: the video package is soundtracked to innocuous, elevator muzak renditions of Follies.
The notoriously reclusive Sondheim spent decades here secreted away, safe from prying eyes. But now we can hyperfixate on every lived-in detail of his home life. Shall we look? Let's look. Ooh is that a vintage board game from the 1800s hanging over the mantle? Was he really using his 1991 'Best Song' Oscar as a doorstop!? cc: Madonna. He has an entire bookshelf dedicated to himself? Slay. Benoit Blanc's terrace was ~totally~ inspired by Sondheim's patio. Giant Elizabeth Taylor detail in the entertainment room? Smart. I bet one of those bookcases hides the secret passageway to his se-[REDACTED]
