Ragweed Notes
-Ragweed can read English.
-The cats are racists.
-Blinker is probably named that because he blinks along. Little man cannot see.
-Blinker and Ragweed have similar stories. Ragweed wants to leave the country to explore the city and Blinker wants to leave his house to explore the city. I honestly find more interest in Blinker's story.
-"An amateur worries about the work before starting; a professional worries about the work when finished."
-"Keep on living till we die. No other way. And there's nothing we can do about it. But hey, baby, live with regrets and you'll wind up regretting living."
-Towards the end, I realized Ragweed is just train hopping.

i know you are sorting through xenofic recs but i definitely would add the tales from dimwood forest series ("poppy" and it's following releases, also my personal favorite xenofics ever tbh) and the animals of farthing wood (also has a tv series adaptation). "a dog's life" is also another really good xenofic novel and the creator is lgbt+ (yipee).
also a casual question, would you consider object fiction to be xenofictiob? like would the "brave little toaster" count as xenofic to this master list?
I FORGOT TO ADD ANIMALS OF FARTHING WOOD THANK YOU!!! I'll add all these.
I'd say yes as well! Xenofiction is just a non-human POV so it think it would count lol I put PMD and MLP on there anyways. I'll add it too seeing as yeah, not a human so therefore fits the genre lol

While I'm still a little bit soured from how the My Father's Dragon movie was generally handled in the tone/writing department, I genuinely believe that Cartoon Saloon could do an amazing adaption of the Tales from Dimwood Forest books
#dumb stuff#cartoon saloon#poppy has an engaging protagonist and a threatening antagonist and the setting and adventure are fun and i loved it as a kid#and i just want an excuse to see them animate another forest environment. cartoon saloon goes ham with the forests#and i feel they would be able to perfectly capture how intimidating but proper the owl was in that book without over-exaggerating#and I'm willing to throw Netflix under the bus for how bad the writing and voice direction was in my father's dragon#since they genuinely do a superb job with writing and voice direction in their previous movies. also just fuck Netflix in general

13, 17, 25, 26, 29, 30!!
13) A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing: this is a good one, I don’t know if I have a good answer for this cause nothing’s coming to my mind at the moment. If I think of someone, I’ll come back & edit this later.
17) Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what: I try not to eat or drink when I draw, cause I don't wanna spill crumbs or other stuff in my workspace; luckily the kitchen & dining area is next to me, so if I wanna drink water or get a snack, I can just take a quick walk out my work space and get something
25) Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by: I remember one of my college professors said that my art/style reminded them of "Daria", which I kinda found endearing even if that wasn't fully accurate to me.
26) What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended: off the top of my head, there was a comment I got where someone had assumed that two of my characters were gonna end up together romantically in the future; ironically, the characters featured in there were both aroace(and was tagged as such, too)
29) Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically: Also a good one; I’m gonna have to say “The Tales of Dimwood Forest” series by Avi & Brian Floca; I read that in my childhood years & while it’s not a central influence to my art, it’s something I still love even now & still occasionally read to this day.
30) What piece of yours do you think is underrated?: This fanart of Mob
Feel free to send me more of these!

Richard Corben's "Dimwood" Published for First Time
Dark Horse's next release from the Richard Corben Library is Dimwood, Corben's final graphic novel. Dimwood is written and illustrated by Corben with lettering by Nate Piekos. The special edition collects previously unpublished Gothic tales and also includes an introduction by Joe Lansdale, an epilogue by project art director José Villarrubia, and other bonus material.
"In the densely vegetated forest of Dimwood, a young woman returns to her family home after many years of absence. Xera has gaping holes in her memories of her childhood and family, as obscured and dim as the surrounding forest. In Dimwood Mansion, with its decaying, labyrinthine levels, she seeks the missing pieces of her past and makes connections with mysterious disappearances and gruesome murders." (Dark Horse)
Dimwood goes on sale in bookstores on April 22, 2025, and in comic shops on April 23, 2025.

Real question: why do so many of your au outlines have unhappy endings? I don't want to sound critical or anything because they're great but I wonder.
Ehhh, I’ve always been a sucker for tragedy. I blame it on my mom, who is a huge fan of Broadway. American musicals have only two genres: “Wheee, Vaudeville is postmodern now! [Throws rock through fourth wall]” and “We just remembered that all the best operas are political tragedies! [Cue TPK]”. I was all about the second genre.
Although musicals were my gateway to tragedy, I also read loads of excellent tragic books at an impressionable age (The Witches, Tales from Dimwood Forest, Watsons Go to Birmingham, Sunwing, Tuck Everlasting, Mossflower, Bridge to Terabithia) and they were a terrible influence. I enjoy the ways that tragedy is complex and troubling, liable to stick in the brain like a burr and in need of hard study to work loose. Tragedies are usually the stories of characters messing up big-time and paying the price, and those stories are some of the hardest to read the first time through and the most enjoyable on rereading.
I love to read tragedies, and as a consequence I love to write them. And yeah, it’s a convention in fan fiction to avoid tragic endings (although not to the extent that it is in Hollywood movies) but I guess there are some conventions of fic that I willfully ignore.

Monday Motivation Owl
For this Monday’s motivation we present the Great Horned Owl Mr Ocax, the villainous character from Avi’s children’s novel Poppy, with illustrations by Caldecott Medal-winner Brian Floca. SPOILER ALERT: Although a villain, Mr. Ocax is highly motivated to terrorize the little field mouse Poppy, and does a great job of it until the end when Poppy stabs the owl to death with a porcupine quill. OUCH!
Avi is the pen name for Edward Irving Wortis, a prolific two-time Newbery Medal winner and Newbery Honors winner. Poppy, first published by Orchard Books in 1995, received the 1996 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for fiction, and is the first title in Avi’s Tales From Dimwood Forest series. This copy from our Historical Curriculum Collection is a later 2007 revised Harper Trophy edition, but bears a 2014 author’s presentation inscription to our library.

2, 19, 23, 43 :>
2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs?
I do like Yugo Nora a lot. She was my first fleshed out oc and I wish I talked about her more shdjdbd
19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why)
They all mean so much to me!!! I’m gonna go ahead and say that my Tales of Dimwood Forest oc, Daisy the deer mouse who had been forgotten for so long is one that means a bit more, since she was my very very first oc before I knew what ocs were. I guess she just started me on that path!
23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like?
My trainersona Krys (I like the name Kris and it’s variants shut the up!) who was a straight, cis girl who married Lysandre of all people. Then I edited them a bit and they’re nonbinary and could talk to Pokémon, and also DIDNT marry Lysandre because wtf. Also their hair is short now.
43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It’s time to confess
My ocs tend to share a lot of personality traits with me because I always see myself in them. Also, I guess people see them as comic relief meme-y characters since most of the time I post about any of them it’s for a joke, but my ocs tend to actually be more serious in some aspects. Also I really like making blondes probably because that’s my hair color xD
Also. No one is cishet. Absolutely no one.

name three favorite writers
Oh good lord um OKAY. I usually list fandom people for this so this time we’ll do professional writers:
Brian Jacques (Redwall series), Avi (Tales From Dimwood Forest), and Ann M. Martin (The Doll People).
Hilariously two of these involve mice. I can think of two more beloved authors who wrote about mice that I loved. Apparently I just really like mice.
