So, what are your thoughts on the most recent RWBY clip from the app?
Hey Miki-chan. Whelp, from what I gathered from the clip, it seems to be a continuation from the first teaser clip that was released with Yang and the JNPR boys joyriding through Mantle’s empty streets. If anything I’m left even more confused by the full context of these clips. I have questions at the moment. While we see Yang and the JNPR Boys, I’m left pondering where are the others?
Where are Ruby, Weiss and Blake? Where are Nora and Penny? Where are Pietro and Maria? Where’s their airship? Where is the group at the point of this clip? Are they with the Happy Huntresses or are they parked somewhere in hiding, trying to avoid both the Grimm and apparently Ironwood’s forces as well since Ren was seen shooting the Atlas security cameras stationed down in Mantle. Technically it makes sense since as of that moment the group are traitors of Atlas Kingdom; wanted by Ironwood and their military. In referring back to the first clip, what I inferred from that footage was that Yang and the JNPR Boys seemed to have volunteered to go out into the desolate Mantle cityscape to possibly scavenge for equipment. My assumption was that Pietro might’ve sent them to his old workshop since where else would Yang and the JNPR Boys gain their new tech? I doubt they pilfered the hover bikes from the Atlas Military---I mean unless Pietro was manufacturing them for use with the military but now they’re free use for our heroes.
Jaune was seen throwing a new extension of his upgraded shield which leads me to wonder if this is probably part of the ‘final upgrades’ that Pietro alluded to back at the start of V7CH3. It makes sense. This still doesn’t explain why the teams are separated as they are.
As much as I dig seeing Yang teaming up with the JNPR boys for a change (particularly Oscar), it is kind of suspicious that she’s not with her usual group. Not even Blake is with her especially coming off of how they were practically glued at the hip last season. The same could be said for Ren and Jaune. Where’s Nora? Given how tense things were for the teams in V7 and also given the fact that it was mentioned by Barbara that distrust was going to be a theme for this coming season, is what we’re seeing in these clips the start of that? Did JNR_RWBY have a bit of a disagreement on what their next plan of action should be with certain individuals forced into more brutal conflict---like Ren and Nora for example?
I dunno. I can’t help but shake the impression that Yang teaming up with Ren and Jaune might be the aftermath of the groups butting heads on what to do now--- whether to go into Mantle or go into hiding? I can’t help but get that vibe but then again, this is just me.
That being said, that’s what I have to say about Yang, Jaune and Ren. Now to address the real Goliath Grimm in the room: Oscar Pine.
Just as I said on Twitter, it honestly bothers me SO MUCH that Oscar is just there with Yang, Ren and Jaune given where the PLOT left him in the V7 finale.
Oscar was literally double-crossed and shot to his death by Ironwood where he ultimately survived the fall thanks to Ozpin’s help and managed to touch down safely in Mantle; far from the main central city that we’re familiar with.
How on Earth is he back together with the group ALREADY and PERFECTLY FINE despite his disheveled and staid appearance when we last left him? What is continuity? Are we playing by Monty Python rules here with Oscar?
You honestly expect me to believe that Oscar fell from Atlas without anyone knowing of his fate and just happened to get into contact with the group or at best bumped into Yang, Ren and Jaune despite not knowing where the group went?
This bothers me so much because once again, here we have a scenario where something serious happens to Oscar to result in him being separated from the hero team…only to have him magically reunite with them and act perfectly fine as if the serious thing that happened to him never happened at all?
Not gonna lie here Miki-chan. I’m going into V8 already slightly annoyed because I’d be lying if I said that Oscar’s presence in these clips wasn’t bugging me. I was much more content believing these clips were flashbacks or memories. But as more content is revealed, it’s looking more and more like it isn’t a flashback and…Oscar is just back with the group…perfectly fine. It’s basically V6CH9 all over again and I just…I’m genuinely tired of the writers doing stuff like this with my favourite character =___=);
What was the point of having Oscar go missing back in Argus after being mistreated by the group if you weren’t going to focus on him at all on-screen and just having him come back being perfectly fine as if Jaune slamming him against the wall while the others just watched and did nothing to really stop Jaune from ruffing up a poor defenseless kid for something that wasn’t his fault didn’t happen?
What was the point of having Oscar be shot with MURDEROUS INTENT by Ironwood if you were just going to have him return to our heroes without them even knowing that Ironwood had literally tried to kill him and would’ve succeeded if Ozpin hadn’t intervened?
What was the point of even have Oscar drop down into FAR MANTLE AWAY FROM THE TEAM without them knowing WHERE AND WHAT happened to him…if he was just going to go back to them anyways as if the V7 finale didn’t happen?
Best case scenario---imagine if…everyone ends up being separated from each other. Not just Oscar. Like imagine if…the airship ends up being downed by a swarm of Salem’s flying Beringels and when our heroes regain consciousness on the ground, they wake up to realize that they’ve been separated again just like back in Northern Anima with certain members missing. Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Nora are stranded somewhere with Penny, Pietro and Maria while Yang, Jaune and Ren fell somewhere else.
And in their attempt to find the others, the trio runs into Oscar. That could be a thing. I dunno.
Whatever explanation the Writers have for the group finding Oscar perfectly FINE after he fell to his alleged death last season--- I hope it AT LEAST makes sense within the stage they set up since V7 in respect to continuity.
I don’t mean to sound like a Negative Nancy here but since you asked for my thoughts, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you with how I feel about this, fam.
It’s kind of hard for me to really like these clips anymore as much as I should since I’m already disappointed by what the Writers didn’t do despite their setup giving the impression that that’s what they were going to do---which was keep Oscar separated from the others, making them think he was dead as a result of their deceit of Ironwood long enough to build up tension and force certain characters (like Ruby) to rethink their recent decisions and actions.
I’m disappointed that the chance wasn’t taken to keep Oscar separated from the group for a while long enough to just have him be alone with Oz again so the two souls could learn to coexist and work through their past grievances; finding peace with each other after everything that’s happen to them since Mistral.
I mean...technically they can still do this for V8 but I’m curious how much of it we’re actually going to see onscreen since Oscar is back with the team and we’ve seen how much the show likes to focus on Oscar whenever he’s with the others, right?
Again, not trying to be a Debby Downer…it’s just that, already the missed opportunities for Oscar’s development and impact on the team with how it could’ve been used to push and develop the others---it’s going to genuinely bug me going into V8.
That being said, since it’s already been established that Oscar IS back with the group, I wonder how the Writers are going to utilize him for this new season especially given that Oz is back. I hardly doubt that Oscar will be able to give reigns back to Oz again especially since things STILL haven’t reconciled between the others and the old soul. So it’d be interesting to see how Oscar would cope with being a middleman between the group and Oz. At least there could be that in respect to Oscar’s further character growth.
Not to mention that Qrow and Robyn are still captives of Ironwood and while the Writers missed their golden ticket with Oscar, they still have these two birdies to induce tension. I can definitely picture Ironwood using Robyn and Qrow are bait to lure out the others---basically negotiate a trade---Qrow and Robyn for Penny? That could work too. But we’ll see.
Anyways, those are my thoughts on the clips. Again, apologies if my points seemed rather negative but that’s just my feelings. How this squiggle meister personally feels over everything the CRWBY has put out so far; both from before and going into V8.
Speaking of, how did you feel about the clip. Miki-chan? What are your thoughts on the clip?

EPISODE 3
July 7, 09:50 AM
All packed up. I checked twice if I hadn’t forgotten anything but I'm sure by the time I get home I’ll notice that I hadn’t, of course, packed everything. Happens every time. I just hope it’s something I won’t miss. To not my surprise at all, my blood test results are fine, so my mom can pick me up a bit earlier than we planned. Luckily for her, because that way she won’t be late for work.
As much as I’m eager to leave this place and hopefully not be back any time soon, I have to admit I’ll be very curious about Nathaniel’s recovery. I hope he wakes up soon and goes to Australia just like he wanted. We were friends while one of us was unconscious, would we still be friends if we got to know each other? Would Bobbie and Nicole like him?
I already have two friends and I think that’s plenty. Sometimes, when the three of us are not together and I discuss something with one of them, I need to have the same kind of conversation with the other one the next day. It’s a waste of time. But who am I trying to fool? Friendship is not really what I have in mind, is it?
And yet I felt like leaving him something as a gift would be a nice gesture. I thought for a while what it could be, but since I didn’t have that many things to give away in the first place, I grabbed my notebook and a pencil and put it on his bedside table. I asked my mom to buy it for me when I decided to start writing this journal, but I quickly figured that a laptop and a phone are a lot more convenient. I left him a note saying it’s a gift for keeping me company and that dr. Gramm says that visualizing your thoughts helps with the way your brain works. I didn’t write down my name. Take care, buddy.
11:15 AM
“There’s leftover spaghetti in the fridge if you’re hungry,” said my mom, before she left for work. I microwaved it immediately after she closed the door. It’s good. Hospital food wasn’t that bad, but I missed something with fat.
I’m very proud of myself that before I wound up in hospital I had this unexpected urge to clean up this room. I can’t imagine coming back now to its usual form, which is just like everybody else’s room, but upside down. It’s a little dusty, but hey, dust never bothered me anyway. I also already wasted water on taking a bath, making sure I’m a big part of climate change. And people say I’m irresponsible. I’m responsible for global warming! Checkmate.
Okay, I need a plan. Bobbie and Nicole are coming in less than an hour and I still haven’t told them about anything and I don’t know how to do that without making a big deal out of it. My face looks roughed up but I swear it’s not as bad as it seems. On a logical level, of course, I know it’s a big deal for them. They’re my friends, obviously, they care. And yet every time they do care and they do worry it makes me furious. And one thing I know is that I can’t control my emotions and I tend to be very hard to stand in those moments.
Bobbie and I have known each other since 1st grade and he is my best friend. He’s the most beautiful and kind-hearted soul on this planet. How on earth does he put up with me? I have no idea. I don’t think he has one corrupted molecule in his body, which I’m pretty impressed by after all that time he spends with me. He’s very understanding and I know I don’t have to worry about him pressuring me into something I don’t want to do. Like remembering, for example.
Nicole, on the other hand, I can already hear saying “If you don’t find out what happened, I will.”. I have to ask her if she realizes how dramatic she really is sometimes. But it is my body and my memory, Nicole. You don’t have to always be adventurous Mrs. Smith who must solve the case shooting the UMP-45 all the time. She hasn’t said it yet and I’m already mad.
  THE PLAN:
Open the door like nothing’s happened. Like my face isn’t purple at all. “Hi, guys! Long time no see! What have you been up to? I need to know everything! *then I point at my face and say* What, this? That’s nothing, not even worried about it. The doctors said “Ian, you have nothing to be stressed out about, you are perfectly fine. And you tell your friends when you’re finally reunited that everything’s good, thus they shall not worry. And doctors know better so you can’t argue.”
Stop turning everything into not-funny jokes, sit down with them, and acknowledge the fact that they simply want to know what happened. You’re adults, you can handle talking about emotions, without being emotional.
Now go find some snacks before your guests arrive, like a good host you are.
  1:10 PM
This journal is slowly becoming like some influencers’ Twitter account, where they can’t go on with their lives without updating what’s going on every 5 minutes. Well, this is the closest I will ever get to feeling like a celebrity, so let me shine.
Dear Diary, I just wanted to update you, that nothing went according to my very simple plan. I know! How could anybody mess it up? Well, I’ll tell you all about it when I’m done hiding in the bathroom and contain my very human emotions. Talk to You later! Oh, and I promise I will never call you a Diary again.
  8:30 PM
They already knew what happened because they came to visit earlier that day. Apparently, they wanted to surprise me in the morning but of course, I wasn’t home and my mom was the one who opened the door. She had no way of knowing I hadn't told them, but she had the opportunity to confess to me. In the car for example. I’m not upset with her, but I am upset with myself for acting like a child and not just telling them. Like every normal person would do. The goal was to not make a big deal out of it, and I made it the complete opposite.
“You say it’s nothing serious, yet you lost a part of your memory. Sounds like a pretty serious injury to me,” said Nicole, and I could tell she was being suspicious of my truthfulness. And she was correct since I’m still not sure I want them to know about the part when I travel in time. Again, I want to be a dentist, not an actor. I’m not that good at lying.
“Look, Nicole, please don’t try and make me all freak out. Can we just talk about your trip? How was camping?” I tried to change the subject.
“But don’t you want to know who did this to you?” she wouldn’t give up.
“No, to be honest, I don’t. I’m glad I don’t remember. Do you know why? Cowardice. I’m scared, Nicole. I’m not you, I don’t usually face fear, you know that. It’s easier to move on that way, I can’t cope with nightmares that I’m pretty sure would occur the second I remember.”
And that’s true, I am a coward. And although I know that everybody deals with their problems they’re own way and not everybody has to be brave or be the hero in the story and that there’s nothing shameful about it, sometimes I do wish I were a little more like Nick. She gets things done. She doesn’t run. I mean, she does, she gets her scholarship from running, but she doesn’t run away from her problems. She solves them. Just like that.
I’m spending the night at Bobbie’s. Like most of the summer nights, probably. And if I’m not at Bobbie’s, Bobby’s at mine. Some things never change. It’s not as easy for Nicole, because she doesn’t live just across the street as we do from each other, so she went home. I’m finishing the last French toast we made earlier as I’m waiting for Bobbie to get out of the shower, so I could go. What’s taking him so long?
  11:50 PM
I woke up looking at Bobbie’s concerned face. He came back to the room and found me already asleep, but it was still early for him so he just lied down and started reading. He noticed I was acting weird but didn’t interfere at first. Not until I woke up screaming.
“Are you ok? Who’s Nora?” he asked.
“I… don’t know,” I lied to my friend yet again.

Home Safe
Alex is out later than normal, and Henry is left home to worry.
OR: Alex’s phone dies, and Henry is used to living in a country with gun laws that actually make sense. Ft. angst.
TW: referenced gun violence
When Alex climbs the steps up to the front door of the brownstone in Brooklyn, he's exhausted. The bag on his back is loaded with law books, and it feels like they'll drag him back down into essay hell before they let him ascend to the heaven of his and Henry's bed. When the Uber pulls away behind him, he's surrounded by the murky gray that passes for a New York late night or early morning, but with the ever-present street lights he really has no idea what time it is. When his phone died it was almost 10 PM, but that was hours ago.
He'd told Henry not to wait up, so it's a surprise when, after a few moments of fumbling with the key and the lock that never seems to open right, the door is thrown open and he's pulled into a bone-crushing hug. His arms come up automatically to hug Henry back, and after a moment, he's pulled inside, stumbling over the threshold and starting to pull back to kiss his boyfriend. Henry won't pull back even that far. After a long moment of nothing but hug, Henry shuts the door and lets go just enough to lock it behind them, shutting out the night for good. The quick glance of his face Alex gets is enough to make him hug Henry closer.
He can hear the TV from their living room, accompanied by, bizarrely, what sounds like June's and Pez's voices. Henry's still holding him close, and at some point he started shaking slightly. Now that they're fully inside, Alex expects to be kissed, or at least to move into the living room or put his bag down, but Henry doesn't let go. When he does finally try to shift away, even the tiniest bit, Henry pulls him in tighter, saying something Alex can't quite make out. Through the haze of exhaustion, he realizes suddenly that Henry is crying.
"It's okay, baby. It's alright," he says, rubbing Henry's back gently.
"Alexander Gabriel Claremont-Diaz, don't you ever do that to me again. Don't you dare, don't even... god, just... you can't do that to us."
"Sweetheart, it's okay. I won't do it again. Whatever it is, we'll--"
"Whatever it is?!" Henry's grip relaxes a bit. "This bloody country of yours, and you won't answer my calls, or anyone's texts-- I've got everyone on Skype, and no one's heard anything and you..." He's cut off by a sob, and Alex holds him closer.
"Hey, I'm okay. It's okay. My phone died, but I told you I'd be out late. I said not to worry."
"How can you be so bloody... it was on the news. I was getting ready for bed and they announced it... I've been trying to call you for hours; everyone has, and you've... we haven't heard anything; we were so..."
He keeps talking, but Alex can't listen. He hasn't been able to make himself listen since Henry mentioned the news and he felt his blood run cold. Something's happened to his mom. Someone's hurt her, or maybe they've hurt June or his dad or Leo or Rafael Luna. The Republicans have done something in Washington, and they've needed him in the field and he's been buried in a textbook and an essay that won't ever really matter.
His family's needed him, and they're hurt, and he's here, getting a hug from his boyfriend and promising that it's okay when everything has gone wrong.
"Sweetheart, what... what happened?" he finally asks. Henry takes a deep breath.
"There... at the 7-11 on third, there was a... a shooting, and they didn't catch him for ages, and... and they said people had been hurt. People got shot, and it was on third, right by Washington Square Park, right by the subway stop you get off at; it was so close to NYU's law school and I... Christ, Alex, that was 10:30. And I called you, and you didn't... and then I called Nora, and June and your mom, and then I called Leo and your dad and Luna in case anyone had heard from you, and they hadn't, and... and then Bea called, and she and Pez have been on the phone since 11:00, which is 5:00 AM their time, and we... I love you. I love you so much."
He's pulled back enough to grab hold of Alex's face, and Alex gets his first good look at the red-rimmed eyes and frazzled hair. Henry is wearing pajama pants with the button-up he wore for the day, though it's now crumpled almost beyond recognition, and one of the buttons is in wrong. His bottom lip is chewed almost raw. This is the worst he's ever seen Henry, and he's seen Henry through some truly awful things. He has no idea what time it is, but it's been hours since 10:30. He'd picked a study spot away from TVs and taken an Uber home instead of the subway, and he'd left Henry to worry for hours.
"I love you, too. I'm so sorry."
"Jesus Christ, it's not... don't be sorry. It's not... I was just so..." Henry takes a deep breath, leaning his forehead against Alex's for a second. His hands are on Alex's biceps, and Alex can feel them shaking slightly. "What matters is that you're okay. You're here. You... you made it home. I've still got you. That's what matters. We... we should tell the others you're okay."
Alex nods, letting his backpack fall to the floor with a heavy thunk. The essay he'd been working on and the back pain in his future have become problems for another day. Henry clutches his hand like a lifeline as he leads the way into the living room, where he has Skype screens lined up along the coffee table. Bea and Pez in Kensington are on one; Nora in her apartment is on another; and June, his mom, and Leo are on a third from the White House. June's got her own phone out, and he can barely make out his dad's face.
"He just got home," Henry says as they walk into the room, sounding suddenly exhausted. "He's safe."
There are sounds of relief from the screens, and everyone starts talking at once as Henry sits them down on the couch. Alex smiles a bit.
"Sorry, I... my phone died, and I was in the zone. I had no idea anything had happened until I got home."
Henry rests his head on Alex's shoulder, the tension draining from his body as the others lay into Alex. Nora's upset that he doesn't have an extra battery pack, because she had to stay up watching Henry panic and not being able to leave her apartment to come help for fear of something happening to her. Pez offers to give out free battery packs at all their youth shelters as long as Alex promises to take one and threatens to bring Henry back to England where it's safe. Bea makes Alex promise not to scare Henry like that ever again, and Zahra appears to threaten him with a fate worse than being shot if he ever stays out that late with a dead phone again. His mom is just glad he's safe, and she says she's glad she's awake at a decent time for an international call, but he can tell she's been worried sick. June promises to write him the most embarrassing obituary possible, including the time he shit his pants in 4th grade, and his dad chips in with the story about a time he threw up over a desk of important papers after insisting he wasn't sick. Leo has the good sense not to comment on that, just saying he's glad everyone's safe.
Bea and Pez hang up first, then the White House screen, and finally it's just him and Henry. He turns the TV off, and when he looks over from finally plugging his phone in, Henry has fallen asleep curled against him on the couch. He's become not a prince, not a leader, just six feet of tired boy squished in next to David and clinging to Alex's arm like a child with a teddy bear. Alex can see the tear tracks on his cheeks, and when he listens to the voicemail from 10:28 (over three hours ago), he can hear the panic in Henry's voice. His voicemail is full, mostly with calls from Henry, June, and Nora, though he's heard from almost everyone he knows. He has 198 texts and emails from Henry, Zahra, Luna, and all three of his parents. Alex would be the first to admit he's never avoided the spotlight, but it's all a bit overwhelming. He shoots off as many 'we're okay' texts as he can manage (to Luna, Liam, Catherine, Phillip, Amy, Cash...) before he eventually just opens twitter.
"Tonight's been hard, but I am more thankful than ever to have @hrhHenryWales and @hrdDavidBeagle by my side. We're all safe, and they're sleeping beside me on the couch. Take time to look after yourselves, America. But when you're ready get your asses in gear."
He ignores the things people have tweeted at him and the almost immediate replies to open Instagram. He goes straight to his story and snaps a photo of Henry's hand clutching his sweatshirt, David's head resting beside it.
"So infinitely thankful for these two, tonight more than ever. I'll plan on an actual statement tomorrow, but tonight I just need to be thankful. Take time to look after yourselves, then swipe up to call your reps."
He adds the link and tags Henry and David, then puts his phone down. For the rest of the night, all that matters is getting to bed. There is so much to deal with and work through, and so many people to call and rally with, but if he starts on that now he won't stop. It's too much for two AM, so he has to address only the tiny, immediate problems right now. Most importantly, if they spend the night on the couch, Henry will be sore for the next two days, and Alex will have to watch him be in pain. So Alex runs his fingers through Henry's hair and says, "Baby? You've got to wake up, Sweetheart. We've got to go to bed."
Henry doesn't react, but when Alex pulls away to try to pick him up, he bolts awake. His eyes are wide until they land on Alex, and only once he's convinced Alex is safe does he relax a bit. Alex pulls him into a hug, and Henry hugs him back, clutching at his sweatshirt like he might disappear. Alex just holds him, rubbing his back until his breathing evens out.
"Sorry, I... I was going to carry you to bed."
"No, don't be sorry. I love you so much. I'm just... I'm glad you're safe."
"Me too," Alex says. "I love you, and I'm glad we're safe. I'm glad we're together."
Henry nods, yawning, and Alex eventually gets him up off the couch and out of the crumpled dress shirt. While he's brushing his teeth, he gets a twitter post notification from Henry and sees that he's tweeted about their safety, reassuring fans across the pond that they're alright. He's in bed when Alex comes out of the bathroom, and when Alex gets in Henry pulls him close, burying his face in Alex's chest. Alex hugs him close.
"I love you. I was so afraid I'd never get to say that again and now I don't want to stop. I love you," Henry mumbles, sleepiness creeping into his voice, and Alex smiles.
"I know." He barely catches Henry's sleepy laugh. David jumps up to lie at their feet, and Alex presses a kiss to Henry's forehead.
Tomorrow, he'll find out the details of what happened. Tomorrow, he'll find a list of rallies and protests to tweet out and start drafting a law that actually makes sense. Tomorrow, he'll have the energy to find out exactly how to fight back and make sure no one ever has to deal with what Henry dealt with again. But for now, he pulls his boyfriend close and lets himself fall asleep thankful.

... claws my way up from hell once more and vomits onto the dash.... hello. its nora. i used to write rory bergstrom, but if u were here before that u might remember me as greta or alma putnam or..... som1 else.... an endless carousel of trash children..... this is finn, who i actually wrote for an early version of this rp abt 5yrs back now...... grits teeth..... so forgive me if im rusty i havent written him in a long time but seein honey boy gave me a lotta finn muse n im keen to get Back On The Horse yeehaww...
DYLAN O’BRIEN / CIS-MALE — don’t look now, but is that finn o’callaghan i see? the 25 year old criminology and forensic studies student is in their graduate year of study year and he is a rochester alum. i hear they can be judicious, adroit, morose and cynical, so maybe keep that in mind. i bet he will make a name for themselves living off-campus. ( nora. 24. gmt. she/her )
shakes my tin can a humble pinterest, ma’am....
finn has a bio pasted at the bottom (n written in like.... 2015.... gross) but it’s long  so if u don’t wanna read it here’s the sparknotes summary..... anyway this was written years ago n a lot of it seems really cliche and lame now but..... we accept the trash we think we deserve
grumpy, ugly sweater wearing, tech-savvy grandpa
very dry sense of humour and embraces nihilism.
if ron swanson and april ludgate had a baby it would be finn
he was raised in derry, just south of dublin.
from a big family. elder sister called sinead. he also has a younger sister (aoife), a younger brother (colm), and a collie named lassie because his father lovs cliches (finn hates cliches but loves his dog).
his father was a pub landlord and his mother worked at the market sellin fruit n veg when they met but got a job as a medical receptionist when she had kids cos it meant she cld be there with them in the day and work nights.
his parents met when they were p young and fiesty and rushed into marriage cos they were catholic n just wanted to have sex. his family were literally dirt-poor, but they had a lot of love i guess
hmmmmm his relationship w his father wasn’t the best cos i can’t write character who have healthy relationships w their parents throws up a peace sign. yh, had a pretty emotionally distant, alcoholic violent father n so gets a lot of his bad habits i.e. drinking as a coping mechanism and poor anger management from him BUT anyway
as a kid he was never very motivated in class, he always had a nervous itch to be off somewhere doing something else. struggled under government austerity bcso there just wasn’t the resources to support low income families where the kids had learning difficulties n needed support. fuck the tories am i right
his mum suggested he try sports to help w his restless energy but he was never any good at football so he took up boxing and tap dance instead. he took to tap dancing like a fish to fuckin water. as adhd n found this as a really good way to use his excess energy in a creative way
had a few run ins with the police in his early teens for spray painting and graffiti, but he straightened himself out n now actually considering becoming a detective inspector??? cops are pigs.
he had a youtube channel where he posted videos of him tapdancing and breakdancing as a kid, basically would be a tiktok boy nowadays, n had like... a small fanbase in his early teens. attended several open auditions unsuccessfully, until he was finally cast in billy eliot when he was fifteen.
during billy eliot he began dating an italian dancer called nina. they became dance partners soon after and toured across the republic with various different shows (inc riverdance lol the classic irish stereotype). their relationship was p toxic tbh, they were both very hot tempered people and just used to argue and fight all the time.
he went semi-pro at tap dancing, and nina couldn’t stand being second best so she moved back to italy with her family. ignored his texts, phone calls, etc, eventually he was driven to the point where he used his savings to buy a plane ticket, showed up at her house and she was like wtf?? freaked out and filed a restraining order accusing him of stalking.
he was fined for harassment and then returned home to derry, but after the incident with nina he quit dancing for good and finished his leaving cert before heading to university in the US to get as far away from nina and his past life as poss. and basically since he quit dancing to study forensics (death kink. finn cant get enough of that morgue. just walks around sayin beat u) he’s become a massive grump and jsut doesn’t see the good in people any more.
u’ll find finn in an old man bar drinking whiskey bc he is in fact an old man at heart or sat on his roof smoking a joint, drawing wolves and lions and skeletons and shit, playing call of duty or getting blazed or at the corner of the room in a house party ignoring everyone and scrolling through twitter. is a massive e-boy. always up-to-date on memes and internet slang. has reddit as an app on his phone
not very good at communication. rather than solve his issues by talking, he’d prefer to just solve them through fighting or running away from his problems hence why he has come halfway across the world to get away from an issue which probs cld have been solved w a few apology emails.
takes a lot to phase him, but when his beserk button gets pressed he can become a bit pugnacious like an angry lil rottweiler. in his undergrad he was in a few fist fights but doesn’t really do tht any more as he doesn’t condone violence.
in the previous version of this rp he was hospitalised like 5 times. pls, give my son a break. stop tryin to kill him. he literaly got a bottle smashed over his head and bled out all over his favourite angora rug that was the only light of his life
works at the campus coffee shop n always whines about how he’s a slave to capitalism. always smells of coffee
lives off campus with an elderly woman named Marianne, and basically gets reduced rent bcos he makes her dinner / keeps her company. they have a great bond
fan of karl marx. v big on socialism
insomniac with chronic nosebleeds
cynical about everything. too much of a fight club character 4 his own good n has his head up tyler durden’s sphincter
always confused or annoyed

full bio (lame as fuck written years ago..... pleathe...)
tw homophobia
born in quigley’s pub on the backstreets of sunny dublin, young finnegan o'callaghan was thrown kicking and screaming into the rowdy suburbs of irish drinking culture. the son of a landlord and a fishwife, he never had much in the way of earnings, but there was never a dull moment in his lively estate, where asbo’s thrived, but community spirit conquered. at school, finn was pegged as lazy and unmotivated, though truly his dyslexia made it hard for the boy to learn in the same environment of his peers and only made him more closed-off in class. struggling with anger management, finn moved from school to school, unable to fit the cookie-cutter mould that school enforced on him, though whilst academic studies were of little interest to the boy, he soon found his true passions lay in recreational activities. immersed into the joys of sport from as young as four, finn was an ardent munster fan and anticipated nothing more than the day he could finally fit into his brother’s old pair of rugby boots.
his calling finally came unexpectedly, not in the form of rugger, but through dance. to learn to express himself in a non-academic way, he began tap dancing, finding therapy in the beat of his soles against the cracked kitchen tiles (much to his mother’s disgrace). it wasn’t a conscious choice, finn just realised one day that dance was something that made him feel. a king of the streets, finn made his fortune on those cobbled pavements – dancing and drawing to earn his keep. by default, finn became a street artist, each penny he earned from his chalk drawings saved in a jam jar towards buying his first pair of tap shoes. though many of his less-than-amiable neighbours called him a nancy and a gaybo, finn refused to quit at his somewhat ‘unconventional’ hobby, for the young scrapper found energy, life, and released anger through the rhythm of tap. soon he branched out into street dance, hip hop, break dancing, lyrical, his days spent smacking his scuffed feet against the broken patio into the night.
when he was thirteen he took up boxing, and as expected, his newfound ‘macho’ pastime conflicted with his dancing. the boxers called him ‘soft’; the dancers called him ‘inelegant’. he felt like two different people; having to choose between interests was like being handed a knife and asked to which half of himself he wished to cut away. he couldn’t afford professional training in dance, with most schools based in england and limited scholarships available. instead, he made the street his studio, racking up a small fanbase on youtube. when he was fifteen he made his debut in billy eliot at the olympia theatre in dublin. enter nina de souza, talented, beautiful and italian; ballet dancer, operatic singer, genius whiz kid, and spoiled brat. she was selfish, conceited, hell bent on getting her own way, and every director’s nightmare. finn fell for her like a house of cards. he’d always had a soft spot for girls who meant trouble. and so their hellish courtship began.
by the time they were seventeen, the two young swans had danced in every playhouse across the republic. they were known in theatres across the country for their tempestuous personalities, their raging arguments with one another, their tendency to drop out of shows altogether without any notice, yet the money kept rolling in and the audiences continued to grow. for three years, their families continued to put up with their hysterical fights followed by passionate reconciliations. he was too possessive, and she was too wild. their carcrash of a relationship finally came to a catastrophic halt when nina broke off the whole affair and returned to italy with her family. for months finn tried to contact her, yet his phone calls, texts, facebook messages were always ignored, until finally he was driven to drastic measures and used his savings to get a plane to her home town. when finn turned up uninvited at nina’s house she freaked out – and rightly so – she contacted her agent, accused him of stalking her, and had a restraining order placed against him. finn was arrested, held in a station overnight, and charged with harassment before he was allowed to return to dublin.
after the incident with nina, finn lost the fight in his eyes. he became far more hostile, far less likely to retaliate with his own fists, and picked fights not for the thrill of feeling his own fists pummel another into a wall, but for the sensation of his own brittle bones cracking. he dropped his tap shoes in a dumpster, stopped talking to his friends, followed his father’s advice and went back to school to complete his leaving certificate. a few short months later, and finn was packing his bags, saying his bittersweet goodbyes, and travelling half-way across the globe to be as far away as possible from his past self, his mess of a life, and most of all nina. it seemed somehow ironic that the boy who had been cautioned by the garda so much during his youth for spray painting, busking without a liscence, and raucous parties would become the grumpy, aloof overseas student studying a degree in criminology; that his once reckless spirit could be crushed so easily.
of all things that finn could be called, straightforward would never be one of them. ever since his first days in atticus, the boy was pegged as hostile, hot-headed, cynical, rude. he seemed to spend more time in his thoughts than engaging in conversation. like a ticking time-bomb, finn’s anger was of the calm kind, liable to explode without a moment’s noticed. his unpredictable personality make him something of an enigma to those who aren’t amiable with the lad, though hostile as he may appear, he harvests a good heart. loyalty lies at the centre of his affections, and whilst his friends are few in number, he makes a lifelong partner. somewhere within finn, there’s still some fight left, but mostly he has recognised that his hedonistic lifestyle did little to leave him fulfilled – mostly, it just emptied him out – and over his three years at university has resigned himself to a nihilistic predicament.

whats up ! its ur local feral goblin nora ( 23, she/her, gmt ) bringing u yet another baby i dug out of the trash and vomited onto the dashboard. a fake psychic slash rodeo bull sensation studying at hendrix but born in marfa, texas. luvs wearing gingham print dresses and cowboy boots n always in loads of rings and necklaces w flowers in her hair. very into art and pornography, and particularly the combination of the two. wants to do a PHD on gender studies and female autonomy in porn (yeehaw!). this is a pinterest board. without further ado, here’s frida !
hendrix template.
( cis-female ) haven’t seen FRIDA CALHOUN around in a while. the ELIZA SCANLEN lookalike has been known to be (+) SCHOLASTIC & (+) PLUCKY, but SHE can also be (-) DOGMATIC & (-) SINGLE-MINDED. The 18 year old is a FRESHMAN majoring in GENDER STUDIES & VISUAL ART. I believe they’re living in AUDAX, but I popped by earlier and no one answered the door. ( nora. 22. cowboy time. she/her. )
 aesthetics.
a red gingham print dress from your childhood that tugs at the seams and hitches at your thighs. brown cowboy boots still thick with the dirt of a marfa desert. stripper heels decorated with hello kitty stickers. a crystal ball you bought for a dollar from a one-eyed woman at a thrift store. dead flowers clinging to the braids of your hair. a rucksack permanently packed for the move. a streak of red across your lips. roller blades, cut knees, not eating your greens. smiling with a mouthful of blood. the female orgasm cut and pasted from pornhub and superimposed onto renaissance art. sweet wrappers scattered over the vinyl seats of an older man’s car. also this pic here is a big frida mood
connection to eva & did they choose her name during the watershed?
study abroad mentor. when frida moved to the netherlands to study, she was assigned a mentor to help her settle into campus life, since she was not of dutch heritage. eva was her mentor for her first few weeks of study, though they weren’t really friends. occasionally they hung out if they saw each other out at night, but they weren’t like... super close.
ok,.... so first up ! despite going to uni in amsterdam, this gal was born and raised in the ole’ U.S of A. she’s from marfa, texas. it’s a very arty place. she was surrounded by art wankers as a child and it kind of educated her to a lot of shit, but also meant she grew up p fast?? like she learned about sex and death and violence from all these art people who thot they were Freeing her Superego n makin a genius child bt rlly.... they shd hav just let her play with dirt rather than showin her artistic representations of the inside of a dead bird.
BACKSTORY TIME.. her mother was from the wrong side of the tracks, wanted 2 go to art school and started working as an erotic dancer to pay for college but then jst.... ended up staying there. one of those girls u see in the documentaries who had Big Plans but ultimately never got to pursue them n jst got.... sucked in by the money
frida was raised in dressing rooms surrounded by sparkly costumes and nipple pasties and leotards and the like. as a kid she’d try to trot about in her moms heels n yearned for the day she’d be able to be on stage.
if you’ve seen pretty baby its a bit similar to tht..... her mom works in a brothel n has her quite young n the expectation is her daughter will probs end up working at the brothel too when she's old enough. no1 really expected frida to get into a good uni or anythin
frida was p much raised by the town, to be honest. most of her youth was spent scurrying about half naked in cowboy boots and glasses too big for her face. a smol feral child
as a kid used to lie about being able to see dead people bcos she thought it’d make her seem cool and interesting to other kids n it got the attention of the girls her mom worked with. but when her mom realised people were willing to actually believe a 7 year old had seen their dead scorned lover, she saw it as an opportunity to swindle some extra cash and registered her as a child psychic n started putting adds out in local papers for palm readings and tarot predictions.
when her mom hit 30s she couldn't hack being a sex worker any more, so she set up her own fortune telling business and hired a load of the girls from the club to be fake psychics. it was sort of a fortune telling parlour slash brothel, bt they kept tht very under wraps. palm reading upstairs, handjobs downstairs. the reason why some of the women from the strip club agreed to work there was because it was a business actually run by a woman who got what was going on, n not jst someone trying to make quick cash out of old men wanking
as a child, frida was on a few tv shows in the netherlands  making psychic predictions in front of live tv audiences and attempting to reach out to the spirits of their loved ones. this con continued into her teenage years, she even did youtube videos n had minor success, though she was accused of being a cheap horoscope predicter and packed it in shortly after a twitter backlash.
if pressed, frida still claims to have a gift, but that it's not as simple as switching a light on and off, it comes when it comes, you can't summon it, and that's how she gets out of being labelled a fraud if anyone who recognises her demands a reading.
ws street smart, but also did super well at school? quite charming as a kid and good at winning adults over because of a life growing up basically conning rich white women out of their money just by telling them stuff they wanted to hear. was moved up a grade in junior high and graduated early. attended a summer school, before choosing to study in amsterdam because of the appeal of the red light district. very interested in the lives of sex workers and the way they express themselves. is only a freshman but, is like, 50% through her degree already jst cos she’s..... super passionate about her subject getting recognised as a legitimate brand of academia
she wanted to study gender performativity in the lives of sex workers and plans to do her thesis on the porn industry. it might be because of her childhood, growing up surrounded by sex workers, but she's obsessed with it, looks at mathematical structures and symbols in porn through a lens of politics and art history. very interested in visual art.
some ?mildly amusing? facts
owns 4 tarot decks and a crystal ball she bought frm an old lady with one eye
favourite drink is cherry coke
part of a burlesque collective at hendrix university who run speakeasy nights. is trying to set up her own small-scale grassroots burlesque group in one of the more mainstream clubs along the strip bcos there’s so much money and female tourists go wild 4 it
sells nudes on twitter. whenever she gets low on cash she contacts one of the seedy old men who used to visit her mom's club to venmo her $500 in return for pictures
that girl who’s always harping on about body positivity on instagram while wearing cute underwear and looking absolutely bomb
really good at rodeo bull riding. the club in marfa had one so as a youth she got really good at it bcos she was constantly tryin to outdo her friends on who could stay on for the longest. a video of her staying on one for like 4 minutes after downing several jager bombs went viral once.
smol baby. 5′4. wears a lot of cute summer dresses n big boots. gingham is her usual dress style, or like red plaid, n then she’ll either have big white cowboy boots with spokes on the back or the really long doc martens. also owns a lot of abba-esque gogo boots and 90s creepers. flats?? who are they. has her hair in braids a lot, and usually has flowers or feathers threaded through it to add to her whole “mystic” vibe
micro-doses acid for mild depression bcos she didn’t believe in “that CBT bullshit”, thought that therapists, like her, were jst con artists so always a bit spaced out
her flirting technique is absolutely offering to read your palm. she used to do it all the time at school its how she met most of her eighth grade boyfriends.
volunteers at one of the local galleries but mostly just rants to old white dutch men about how cis white men have dominated art for years :/ is one of those SJW-types but only?? when it comes to art??
has a pet rat called popeye
takes photographs of dead animals to use in her art and often posts them side-by-side with stills of women in porn to show the shelf-life of female sex workers in a patriarchal-dominated industry or some bullshit idk
big into spoken word poetry, even if its shit. likes savage depictions of femininity
wrote a thesis on art as an act of masturbation that got published
big into capitalism and commodity culture. loves it.
wanted plots, fucker
ppl who are also studying @ hendrix but speak english !! bcos frida finished her exams a year early at like 17 n just up and left to amsterdam cos she knew if she got in-state tuition she’d never leave texas, she came to the netherlands with like, 40 dollars and a phrase book. eva was kind of her study-abroad mentor to help her settle into amsterdam campus life
ppl she met at an inter-school maths championship competition or something really fuckin nerdy like that. she probably got entered in a spelling bee or two, she was her high school’s pride and joy until people started calling her a slut in toilet door grafiti
hook-ups !! frida does not do relationships, she had several girlfriends as a kid but she enjoyed the thrill of the chase more than being with one person. pan, but not about befriending straight men. very much fuck-em-and-chuck-em wham-bam-thankyou-ma’am when it comes to guys. that said, if u think ur character cld get under her skin n try n change that by all means be my guest
other ppl who wld be in burlesque with her. also she goes to strip clubs n peep shows like every day, thats basically research for her, so if ur characters would be into strip clubs they might see her there
she volunteers at a few galleries, tht is also a possible place where they cld kno each other from
i feel like she’d be on student council if they had one of those. shes that kind of bitch, turning up like elle woods with a big feather pen or a light-up heart marker, slamming down some truths before upping and leaving to go for her 11am chai latte break
mayb someone she’s trying to coach into being more body confident through self-expression in burlesque.
som1 who attended the art institute in marfa for a summer n maybe knew her when she was a bit younger ??? idk
drama. angst/ horror. someone accuse her of being a fake psychic and she’ll predict your horrific untimely death
nice bike rides in amsterdam please
yea like this if u a) want to plot or b) think the self is as undefinable social construct and i will slide in ur dms to further discus ruckus  x x

alright it’s late so let’s go. today was pretty good. I had my alarm set for 10, and it did go off, but then I apparently fell back asleep because the next thing I knew it was 10:47, so I rolled out of bed and rushed around to make it out by 11 which was my original plan (skipped the makeup, obviously). got my route planned out on google maps, take one bus to the other bus, but then there was construction on the road of the first bus so that delayed us and I missed the other bus that would’ve lined up perfectly timewise, so I had to wait like another 15 minutes till the next one came, but thankfully I made it to the place right on time. I was meeting a con friend for lunch since she was in town even though I’m gonna see her at DragonCon next weekend lol. We went to this place that’s known for their like pie and biscuits so we each got one of each and it was all very good. Pleasant outing, I enjoyed it a lot. I was gonna do the same bus route home but I was messaging Jess because she was sick (when is she not, I know) with a really sore throat, and I ended up getting off the bus at the stop with a CVS on the corner and getting her some throat numbing spray and sore throat cough drops along with some candy to hopefully help make her feel better. The plan was to get back on the next bus and take that the rest of the way, but for some reason (aka because Chicago public transit sucks) the next bus wasn’t coming for another 30 minutes, so I said fuck it I’ll just walk, it was only like a 15 minute walk. So I dropped that stuff at her apartment and then walked the rest of the way back to my apartment and started working one one of the new cases my boss had sent me, he gave me two to work on while the memos are still getting prepared. so I spent a while getting into that, and then Jess decided she wanted to try eating dinner because she just hadn’t been eating up to this point because everything hurt too much so I walked back to her apartment and then down to the Thai place down the street from her that we’re frequenting like once a week now since we discovered it so Jess doesn’t always have to walk to me where all the other restaurants are (which is fair I mean, she does the walk the majority of the time so I can’t complain). That meal was good, though I mostly ate the rice around the beef because I didn’t really want any meat lol. Went back home afterwards and kept working, and of course in the middle of that the news dropped that Brandon and Courtney were exiting Legends this upcoming season. This wasn’t 100% a surprise based on some stuff we’d heard, but seeing it as a final decision published to the internet was really disheartening, especially for Brandon who we did not think was going to leave. But they both have made it very clear this was not their choice, and I can’t blame Brandon for sticking by his wife (quick story if you haven’t heard it- the first con we went to with the two of them back in March 2018, at the panel someone asked Courtney what her favorite part of being on Legends was, and she broke down crying and said it was that her family could all live together in the same country and like....how could I blame Brandon for wanting to keep his family together?). So it’s been a lot to deal with emotion wise, and of course it doesn’t help that we haven’t seen them since April because their cons have been pretty limited and we just haven’t been able to make it to any of them. But we have from a reliable source that if you’re upset about this you should tweet Phil Klemmer directly because this was his decision, along with the Legends writer’s room (so @PhilKlemmer and @LotWritersRoom on twitter) about your displeasure with this decision because it could still influence the outcome, so please express your love for these characters and do whatever we can to help this sucky situation. I know Ray was a really beloved character and so many people related to and just loved Nora so deeply, and it really sucks to see them getting hurt like this, especially when B&C are genuinely the nicest people you could ever meet and love their characters so deeply. So that’s been rough to deal with, but we’re not giving up yet at least. Guess we’ll see what happens from here forward. But yeah, I worked interspersed with checking my twitter periodically to stay updated with that, and around 11 I stopped working and showered and started getting ready for bed and then wasted time looking at kpop boy stuff and now it’s 2 am and I am here and should go to bed if I want to be at all productive tomorrow, so I’m gonna end this here. Goodnight friends. Happy Friday.

January 26th, 2019
One lovely winter morning, the rising sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Jean Duvert’s penthouse apartment, warming his sleeping face with what little heat it offered. He had kicked off his blankets in his sleep again, resulting in him laying amongst them in a plaid pair of pajama pants and a long sleeved grey shirt, as usual, hair tousled behind him. He stirred, curling onto his side and bunching up his blankets to fit in his arms where neither of his boyfriends were currently.
“Mnnnngh,” he groaned, tired limbs stretching, his blue eyes finally fluttering open. The clock read 7:16, meaning he woke up perfectly on time for his day. He spent a few moments rolling gently in bed and lamenting having to leave its warmth and then finally got out of bed, yawning and rubbing his eyes as he plodded towards his bathroom. He could already hear others in the house starting to move about. He pulled off his pajamas and took a nice and hot quick shower, drying off well when he finished.
“What to wear…” he murmured, noting how cold it may be. He opted for a dark mauve dress shirt, dark grey dress pants and a light grey sweater cardigan, a very typical outfit for him. His medium length hair was dry enough to put up in his usual hair style, which he accomplished with a staticky flick of his wrist through his hair. His bangs didn't seem to cooperate, so he tamed them by sliding in a few pins that Jing had given him years before. With his glasses resting on his nose, he gave a soft smile to his reflection and headed down the stairs to start breakfast.
“Good morning,” he called as he came down to the kitchen. Amaryllis was scurrying about, packing up her homework from the night before, while Charles lay on the couch watching a video with Toyo.
“Hi Dad!” Amaryllis grinned, putting her bag down and going up to him. He smiled and gave her a kiss on the top of her head, ruffling her hair.
“Hello, mon fleur. I brought some salmon home last night, how does that sound for breakfast?” He glanced up to the others, though he knew they would always be fine with whatever he cooked for them.
“Sounds great!” Amaryllis opened the fridge to pull out her packed lunch and tuck it in her bag, taking out three more lunch boxes and putting them in a separate bag. While it was open, Jean pulled out the salmon, some eggs and small stone fruits. He started the rice, turned on the stove, boiled a pot of water and in no time threw together bowls of rice, soft boiled eggs, grilled salmon and sweet grilled apricots.
“Breakfast is ready,” he called to the others, putting the plates of varying contents in front of the counter stools. He always knew their preferences and tried to appeal to them- Charles liked his eggs with a more cooked yolk, Toyo was a fan of fruit and got a few more halves of apricots, and Amaryllis got a bigger piece of salmon simply because she's a growing girl. The four of them ate in a peaceful silence, content at what the day would bring for them all.
“We’re going to leave in a few more minutes. Get ready, okay?” Jean said once he finished his breakfast. Amaryllis nodded earnestly and gulped down the rest of her milk, letting Charles and Toyo take the empty dishes to wash. Jean grabbed his car keys and a folder of documents, with the intention of heading to the God’s Pad to do some work after dropping the kids off. He returned to the door where Amaryllis sat with her backpack, ready for the day.
“Alright, let’s go. See you two later,” Jean called to Charles and Toyo. He and Amaryllis headed over to the elevator and took it all the way down to the parking garage– in these moments where they had normalcy in their lives, they really took any chance the had– and Amaryllis climbed into the back of the car, buckling herself in. Jean pulled out of the garage and drove through the streets of Shibuya towards Pork City, where Nori, Taiki and Kogasa waited.
“G’morning, Dad!” Taiki chirped when Jean pulled over. “I got the tupperware from yesterday, all clean!” Taiki opened the front door to sit in the front seat– despite Kogasa being the oldest and tallest, Taiki liked sitting next to Jean as he drove. Nori shuffled into the middle seat and Kogasa slid into the last vacant seat, all of their backpacks resting at their feet.
“Let’s goooo!” Taiki grinned as Jean shifted gears and took off towards their school. On the ride there, Amaryllis shyly distributed the lunch boxes between the Hiraoka brothers, making sure that the biggest one went to Kogasa.
“Have a good day at school,” Jean said, waving to them all as they got out of the car. He left his car parked in the school parking lot, waited for there to be nobody around, and phased back to the God’s Pad with his folder in hand. This place felt vividly nostalgic in the worst ways, sometimes– but at least he had less grievances about it now. He walked over to the piano in the room, his finger tracing a path through the dust.
“Been a while, huh?” he murmured, it not being clear what he was referring to. He gave the dusty black surface of the piano a lingering look, wondering if he should dust it. Regardless, he smiled and went to his desk, greeting any of the Officers working busily around the office. He had a Reaper to check on today, to make sure their rehabilitation was going okay, but after that his day seemed pretty free. He hadn’t had work at the restaurant, either. Maybe he would swing by Nora’s place to say hi. He settled in at his desk to check what was new, when his phone began to ring.
“Oi!” called the voice on the other line as soon as he picked up. “I’m comin’ over tonight, right?!”
“Sorry, who is this?” Jean replied playfully, a hint of a smirk on his face.
“Hey! You know who this is! Ya got me on caller ID or some shit, right!” the voice audibly puffed indignantly, making Jean laugh.
“Yes, yes, Chris. I’m actually going to be visiting Taboo later on, if you’d like to tag along to that, too,” he said, a fondness clear in his voice.
“Hah… maybe not today! I got some homework to do ‘nd shit. Plus, I don’t need more sweets. But you bet I’ll be at your place at like, 7 o’clock!” Chris declared.
“You know you can always be sweeter. Alright, alright. See you later,” Jean said, smiling, hanging up before Chris could protest. He put his phone down, face up in case anyone else called him, and got to work. Fortunately, the check in didn’t require much– Officers had already reported on the Reaper, so he just had to flick through paperwork for an hour before he was on his way to Taboo Sweets. He pulled the door open, the door chimes tinkling happily to indicate his arrival. He immediately was pelted with something soft– a pillow? The offending object landed in his hands and he blinked in confusion.
“Oh, haven’t seen your face around here lately,” Nora said sarcastically, her arm still raised after her pillow toss, raising an eyebrow from her perch at the counter. Jean chuckled and shrugged his shoulders, guilty of her accusation. He entered the shop, putting the pillow back on a nearby couch. There were a few RGers sitting around the cafe, sipping away at their drinks or soups, but otherwise oblivious to his presence there.
“Hey, I’ve been busy. It’s been on my list, I swear,” he defended himself, though he always felt light inside whenever Nora expressed anything like that to him– it just meant that she missed him, was all.
“Want a drink?” Nora offered, bouncing to her feet on the floor.
“Ahh, hm. I could do with just a green tea, really.” Nora hopped over to behind the counter to fix her friend a drink. She pulled out a slice of a cake of some sort and served them both to Jean with a grin.
“Aw, thanks. This new?” Jean asked, picking up the fork to spear a piece of cake off.
“Yeah! It’s a peach shortcake. Just trying some new things,” Nora said, leaning her elbows on the counter as Jean ate. They spent a while chatting and catching up, complete with Meira bouncing about and teasingly asking where Charles was. Of course, Jean could sense a certain Reaper’s presence from the shadow underneath a chair shrink at the mention of his name. It was almost time to pick up the kids by the time he left, so he phased back to his car at the school and waited while checking his phone.
“Utaite Producer Yoshinda to join XYZ Tour!” said a headline on his Twitter feed. Damn, Haruki is going on tour? He quickly texted him a “congratulations on the tour!” and smiled when Haruki actually replied with a “thanks” and a cheerful kaomoji.
“Dad!” cried Taiki in excitement, as if he hadn’t seen him just that morning. Taiki and Nori clambered into the car, Taiki once again in the passenger seat. He knew that Kogasa had kendo that day, meaning that Amaryllis would be watching him, so they would be able to get home just fine on their own. Jean still felt slightly complicated at his pseudo-son dating his actual daughter, but… that is life. He drove back to his apartment, going up the elevator with the two younger Hiraokas, wondering what sort of after school snack he should make for them.
He settled on just giving them fruit for now, since he’d have to make the three brothers dinner that day, with Mama Hiraoka doing overtime. Taiki spent the next while telling Jean all of the great things he got up to that day in between chomps of fruit, Nori listening intently with wide eyes.
“What’s for dinner, Dad?” Taiki asked finally.
“I was thinking just some roasted veggies and chicken, maybe some mashed potatoes too,” Jean answered, thinking to himself. It wasn’t long until it was time to start cooking dinner in the end, which he started once he got Taiki and Nori to start working on their homework. Chris showed up at some point, too, though once he saw that Jean was still cooking he started to try and escape to avoid having to help with dinner. Jean firmly gave Chris a knife and a bunch of carrots before he could leave, and the Reaper huffed in resignation and started to chop. Kogasa and Amaryllis came home just before dinner was served, a big family dinner with 9 people all talking and chatting happily while eating.
“How was practice, Koga?” Jean asked, glancing up to the eldest Hiraoka son. Kogasa adjusted his glasses in slight embarrassment.
“Went well,” he replied simply. Amaryllis beamed next to him, which told Jean quite enough of how it went.
Mama Hiraoka came and picked up her sons after dinner, with an extra container of a portion of dinner for her too. She thanked Jean gratefully, as tired as she looked, but Jean was just happy to help keep their family going.
Chris, Jean, Toyo and Charles ended up playing Mario Party all the way through the rest of the evening, with Charles winning a very unsurprising victory above the rest. Jean chuckled while Chris complained at the mini games being too hard, teasing him about just needing to try for once. It was late at that point, and everybody went to bed, Jean and Chris retreating upstairs.
“Thanks for coming over,” Jean said, tossing Chris his pajamas. Chris grinned and started to change.
“‘F course, man! Anything for you.” Jean smiled, truly thankful that Chris didn’t mind staying over every now and then to help ward off his nightmares. Of course, sometimes they got up to other activities, but the two of them were both pretty exhausted from the day and they went straight to bed. Chris was out like a light in no time, snoring his stupid head off while clinging to Jean’s arm.
“Today was a good day,” Jean mumbled to himself, smiling. He closed his eyes, hoping the next day would be just as good.

Culture and Translation - S01 E07 and SKAM+ Clip 3
I hope I get these done before season 2 starts dropping, that’s all I’ll say. 😂
CLIP 1: Foreshadowing
Es un poco rancio, ¿no? (“It’s not hip, no?”): Fucking Jorge and his untranslatable slang. Okay, so “rancio” literally means “rancid” — and a bunch of other things besides, but this is the meaning closest to the way Jorge uses it. Jorge means that the power of invisibility is overused, boring, the kind of thing someone totally out of touch would pick. Simply put, it’s not cool, and may not have ever been cool.
Es como el superpoder de los cotillas (“It’s like the gossips’ superpower”): “Cotilla” is both a busybody and someone who gossips a lot. Either way, they like being all up on your business.
I think it’s notable that this is all that remains from the og storyline where Jonas wants to meet Eva’s mom, but ultimately bails because he’s smoking weed at Ingrid’s. Eva simply puts Jorge’s request off and it’s never spoken of again.
Personally, I have to say that Eva sharing basically none of her life with her mom rang true to me. I spoke with one of the people who attended the research groups, who told me they were asked about how much or how little they share with their parents. She said most people agreed that teens spend time with their families, but they don’t talk to their parents about their lives all that much. As a teen, my parents were on a need-to-know basis when it came to who my friends were or who I was dating, much less at what point sex, booze and other drugs came into my life.
CLIP 2:  Diseased Pomeranian
Ay, que me mato (“Ah, I’m gonna die”): There’s a bit of a nuance to what Eva says. To die, in Spanish, is “morir”. “Matar” means to kill. Eva means she’s going to hurt herself getting off Jorge’s back and then die, so not quite the same as passing peacefully, lol.
Que me pica un huevo la nariz (“My nose is itching something terrible”): Indeed, Viri says that her nose is itching, but she uses “un huevo” as an intensifier. “Un huevo” would usually mean an egg, but in this register it means a testicle, heh. So her nose is itching in a testicley way.
Viri says in episode 8 that the girl that runs into Eva is a second year. At any rate, Alicia and Inés hung out over the summer with her.
We get a medium close-up of Alicia as the nameless second year passes by her. Alicia has noticed that the second year has herpes, as well. It’s a brief moment, but we can tell that Alicia puts two and two together, as well.
CLIP 3: In which ALEJANDRO tries to get a passing grade in Maths
This is an underrated moment, but I find it hilarious that Eva invokes the “not all men” defense. Especially since Inés preys  on Eva’s insecurity at the end of the clip.
No me jodas (“don´t fuck me over”): This is just one of those Spanish things that we’ll say over and over. I tried different translations through the course of the season, but I still haven’t settled on one that I think really hits the spot. “Don’t fuck me over” works, but it might come across as Eva’s feelings being hurt, rather than something we say… over and over, heh.
Please don’t miss Alejandro adjusting his junk. Lol he’s so douchey.
There’s a school desk in the bathroom. This is not an uncommon sight in Spanish high schools, but I don’t really have a good explanation for it. Like, it’s just a thing. I guess people will drag a desk over at recess, so they can more comfortably hang out in the bathrooms, and then nobody ever bothers dragging them back?
Tumblr media
And, of course, this has been noted, but the graffiti on the wall is a pun. If you read it without the R in parenthesis, it says, “Woman, love yourself.” If you read it adding the R, it says, “Woman, arm yourself.”
Pues a la de mates le está saliendo uno (“the Maths hardass is developing a cold sore too”): What Cris actually says is, “So, the Maths [female pronoun] is developing one,” but for the sake of clarity, I rephrased it to remind the people watching that the girls see the Maths teacher as a toughie, and also, so what Cris is implying about Alejandro and the Maths teacher is more obvious.
I really love that Inés actually smells Jorge’s sweatshirt/hoodie (it’s not clear from dialogue which is it). That’s a power move in any culture.
CLIP 4: Corviches are so hot right now
Encaja todo, claro (“It makes sense, of course”): The closer translation is, “It all fits, of course.” I just wasn’t sure the meaning would be clear, especially when they’re all talking so fast.
Tío, ¿y si nos acoplamos a tus hermanos? (“Dude, and if we crash your brothers’ plans?”): First off, Amira is addressing Cris, but she uses “tío” and not “tía.” This is common and there’s nothing noteworthy about it, but I wanted to mention it in case people had noticed characters of any gender addressing female characters as “tío.” Second, Amira is using slang that would be literally translated to, “what if we dock up with your brothers?” The visual is adorable (to me anyway), but I went with a less literal phrasing that makes more sense in English. I also love that this is apparently something Cris and Amira have done enough that it’s what comes to Amira’s mind first as an alternate weekend idea.
Lol easy there with the age foreshadowing, show. Looking at Cris, Jorge and Lucas specifically.
Jorge says he wants to spin tecno (or techno, in English ). In Spain, tecno has become something of a catch-all term for all EDM genres, rather than the specific mid-80s genre. In hindsight, I’d use EDM instead of electronica.
In case you hadn’t looked corviches up yet, here is a recipe + pic in English.  They’re similar to hot pockets, but the dough is made with peanuts and plantains. Also, apparently, very successful with girls! I have not had them (yet!)
Cris notes that daylight savings time ends that weekend. She and the script writers are correct! She remembers because that gives them an extra hour of partying, but the social media updates stopped before 2 am. Who knows when Cris got back home, though!
At some point in this clip, Jorge and Lucas talk to each other among the general chatter. For once, Lucas’ voice doesn’t carry over the others like a powerful siren, so I was never able to make out what they said. Missed opportunities.
CLIP 5: As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in joy and were suddenly silenced
Debuti (“G shit”): This is one of the translations that I’m happiest about. Debuti sounds very Madrid-specific to me, and so I wanted something really specific and that would stick out. “Debuti” comes up a few times over the season, but it is always said by Eva. It’s Eva’s catchphrase.
I hope it came through in the subs, but while Eva is reading Jorge’s texts, the gang is having a ridiculously hard time trying to pronounce corviches, in the background. To be fair I’m biased because I’ve studied linguistics, but it doesn’t seem like a word a native Spanish speaker would have trouble with.
We first hear Alejandro’s voice as he comes in Nora’s house! Unless you watched the Aitana extra clip, of course. On that note, there’s no animosity whatsoever between the boy squad and Alejandro’s crew. They give each other friendly high fives, it’s all chill.
This party only came to be the day before. Imagine what Cris would’ve done with a few days heads up.
I wonder if Cris was looking to hook up with Lucas at this party, and, since he didn’t feel like being social, she hooked up with Hugo, instead. Seeing how hard a time she’s had shaking Hugo off, I think it would’ve gone better for her if Lucas had agreed to a dance.
And speaking of Lucas, you can kind of see the order in which some scenes were shot, by tracking Lucas’ actor’s cold sore. And yes, it is an actual cold sore and not make up for the show, lol. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that. What amazing timing on the cold sore’s part to be at the scab stage during ALEJANDRO FERNANDO ROBERTO’s herpes week.
Pues muy bien (“Good for her”):  It’s not exactly what Alejandro says. What he says would be closer to, “Okay, very good.” But I think “Good for her” really gets across how little Alejandro cares about what Nora is saying, at this point of the confrontation.
¿Es que no te salían pelos en los huevos? (“You didn’t grow hair in your balls?”): Omg. It’s ON. ON. I am cringing so hard at this mistake in the subs.
CLIP 6: 🙃🙃🙃
I saw someone asking on twitter, so yes, those giant plastic cups are a thing here. They have different names depending on what part of Spain you’re from. In Madrid, they’re called “mini,” and they have a volume of 750 ml (or a little over three cups). They’re most often used for street drinking.
Eva drinks KNEBEP Vodka, which is sold at (you guessed it) Mercadona, for 4 euro per bottle. My liver is crying just thinking about it.
The first song that plays over this clip is Aitana’s Teléfono (Telephone). We remember Aitana from Cristian’s party!
CLIP 7: 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
Te he oído que estabas con Inés (“I could hear you were with Inés”): Literally, “I have heard you, that you were with Inés.”
Por eso he coincidido con Inés (“That’s why Inés was around”): Collins dictionary says that “coincidir” in the sense Jorge is using it would be translated as, “to happen to meet.” I.e. “That’s why I’ve happened to meet Inés.” But I didn’t like it, because Jorge was at Inés’ house. Of course Inés was around. He didn’t just happen to run into her somewhere random. Hope the translation worked!
Tranquila (“It’s okay”): We had something of a debate over the way to translate this. Jorge says “tranquila,” which is the female form of the adjective “calm.” TAJTA wanted to translate it as “calm down.” I didn’t agree, because in Spanish, that would be “tranquilízate.” Jorge is simply repeating “tranquila” to Eva as a means to soothe her, like you do with a crying person. So, rather than “calm down,” I suggested that Jorge repeat “It’s okay.”
Jorge does say “tranquilízate” over the credits, and in that instance we did translate it as “calm down.”
EXTRA CLIP 3: Hugo psyches himself out
This clip takes place between clip 4 and 5! It happens on Friday evening.
At the 00:21 mark, the camera focuses on a graffiti of a blue-skinned woman, with yellow text next to her. It says, “We are the witches you couldn’t kill.”
Pero si estoy más sudado que el rabo de Nadal (“I’m sweatier than Nadal’s wang though”): This is the exact translation, word for word. I just wanted to make clear I did not make anything up in that sentence. By the way, it took a bit to settle on wang among all the many words for a penis.
Nos alegramos porque un colega nuestro está a punto de mojar (“We’re happy because a buddy is gonna get his dick wet”): Dilan is not quite so explicit, he just says Hugo is going to “mojar,” literally, “to wet.” But, it just made me realize that “get his dick wet” is pretty much what “mojar” has meant all this time, and I just hadn’t really thought about it until I had to translate it for a teen show.
Concha de tu madre (“hurry up”): This is Latin American slang. I actually had to read up on usage, because it is most often used as an insult having to do with someone’s mother’s vagina. But I’m pretty sure that, in this context, Dilan only intends to hurry Hugo up. 😂
Social media:
I just want to have a minor breakdown about Eva actually referring to Lucas as her and Jorge’s son, lol.
Jorge has the Théophile Steinlen’s Le Chat Noir poster up in his room. As I mentioned in a previous post, Tomás Aguilera seems to be both a fan of cats and of French. The three videos of Jorge messing with his DJ system are among my very favorite Skam España social media content, because for once, they’re not a selfie.
It looks as though the shipname for Hugo/Cris is Crugo, to answer a question I posed when I posted the social media updates.
“Olé” finally makes an appearance on Skam España. I’ve decided to keep it as is, because some things would be a crime to translate. In case you’re not aware, “olé” is used to express approval and it’s commonly associated with flamenco music and bullfighting. However, it’s not just used in those two contexts. It can be used in any context. I often use it sarcastically, when someone has fucked up. 😋

My 2018 Writing Roundup
Tumblr media
2018 was one of those years where I felt like I was frantically treading water all year, only to look up and realize I’d actually managed to swim myself to shore. The previous two years somehow felt simultaneously tumultuous and like a plateau. At first, I thought 2018 was more of the same, but looking back it was way more of a transitional year than I realized. I’m ending the year on a higher note than I started it, which is a really nice feeling. I’m in an apartment I love, feeling a bit more stable, and I even developed the ability to do a full pushup for the first time in my life, which is by far my single greatest achievement of the year!
This was my fifth year as a full-time freelance writer, and I experienced a pretty big shift in the types of articles I wrote this year—fewer short news posts and way more long-form pieces that more truly reflect my voice and opinions. I actually didn’t realize it until creating this roundup, but good god did I do a lot of writing this year. No wonder I had some pretty severe moments of burnout. I’m incredibly proud of the volume of writing I did, although I’m also frustrated that I worked this much yet still frequently struggled to make ends meet. Thankfully, after a rocky year money-wise, I found a little more stability towards the end of the year. Here’s hoping I can carry that forward into 2019!
One of my big goals for 2018 was to immerse myself more in the world of film criticism, and boy howdy did I manage to manifest that one! I quadrupled the number of films I watched this year and filled in some big cinematic blindspots. I also began writing film reviews in a regular capacity, first at Consequence of Sound and later for The A.V. Club and Alcohollywood as well. While I’ll always enjoy writing about TV (and loved covering the shows I did this year!), TV criticism is something I kind of inadvertently fell into at the start of my career. Film has always been my first love, and I’m glad I found the courage and drive to shift into this new area of writing. It’s been lovely to start immersing myself in the world of Chicago film critics too.
But by far my biggest achievement of the year (beyond being able to do a pushup, of course!) is launching my column When Romance Met Comedy for The A.V. Club. I poured my whole heart and soul into the column, both in terms of each individual entry and in terms of shaping its overall voice and making sure to cover a diverse set of films within the rom-com genre. It’s been a lot of work (way more work than is actually cost effective for me, to be honest), but I’m incredibly proud of how the column turned out in its first year. It’s also been really lovely to get so much positive feedback, both from the commentary community as well as from my A.V. Club bosses. I started my writing career with a blog about rom-coms and I find it hilarious that it took me four years to think of actually pitching that as an idea elsewhere. I’m so glad I did, and I’m having a blast planning out my slate of films to cover in 2019. (If you want to stump for your favorite, drop me a line on Twitter!)
With that, I’ll leave you with wishes for a Happy New Year and a roundup of all the major writing I did in 2018. If you enjoyed my work this year, it would mean a lot if you would support me on either Kofi or PayPal. Or just share some of your favorite pieces with your friends!

Hi! I saw on your twitter that you want more people to react to Skam España, and while this isn't that, I hope you're still up for answering some questions from the Skam Spain AMA: 1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 20, 21, 22. -skammovistarplus, it's a sideblog so I can't ask w/ that username :P
Hiii! :) ahhhh, thank you for the questions
1.  Favorite character
It’s a tie between Eva and Lucas.
4. Favorite friendship
Again, it’s a tie between Noreva and Eva/Lucas. Because I love Noreva SO much, but also Eva and Lucas really stole my heart too.
5. Least favorite character
(boy) Cris. I liked him at first but then just no.
9. Favorite girl+boy squad moment
The street drinking scene thingy in epi 4 I think. I loved that we got to see the girl and boy squad together so early on and that they became close, which then made them hang out together in the later episodes.
10. Favorite original scene
Gosh. This is so difficult. But it has to be Lucas coming out to Eva. It was such a change to the whole story and just seeing them being like that, Lucas opening up to her...I love everything about it. Not only that he came out to her but also little things like Eva asking him if he wants to stay the night over at hers, and yeah.
20. Who would you like S2 to be about
I’m actually excited for Nora, so I’d want S2 to be about Nora.
21. Favorite song
Gosh, so many. Can I say all of them? lol But I guess that my favorite song from the show right now is: Bajo La Piel (but also Ya no quiero na)
Thanks again

Paris AU - We’re not bruised
As Melati starts a new school, and life continues at full speed in New York, Violet can’t help but worry about how life is going.
Dedicated to @talkaboutartassholes - Since it’s been too long since anyone has been upset.
“Melati seems upset.” Violet twisted her hair into a bun, her skin still smelling faintly of coconut. It was a little past eleven, Asta and Nora sleeping in their beds in the livingroom, the house quite. The bedside lamp the only source of light in the room.
“Hmm?”
Sutan was sitting in bed, his pyjamas on, the white t-shirt showing how dark he had gotten over the summer in LA, their family for once not going on vacation that year, unless you counted their trip to upstate New York for a long weekend with Fame and everyone. Violet going to Paris for couture week, Melati declining her offer to come along, Melati spending the summer in Mexico with Raja and Raven, as well as two weeks in LA with her dad and a long week with her grandma and her boyfriend Harold on Long Island.
“Sutan? Are you listening to me?”
“Mmh?”
Violet rolled her eyes and sat down on the bed, putting her hand over her husbands phone, disrupting his view of it.
“Hey! I was-”
“Using that, I know.” Violet sighed slightly. “Can it please wait?” Violet knew it wasn’t polite to interrupt, Sutan often reading on his phone, or playing some mindless game to calm down before bed. The two of them doing their best to always go to bed together when they were both home. “We have to-”
“I just need another 10 minutes, social media is blowing up.”
“... Because of your show?”
“Lovely eyes, it’s not just my show.” Sutan tried to move her hand, tried to get his phone back, but Violet held firm. She knew it annoyed Sutan when she didn’t take the show serious enough, the entire thing in its 6th year of running, but she couldn’t help the slight resentment she felt towards it for tearing her husband from her.
“I’m just checking twitter, the challenge this week has really gotten the audience fired up. I need to reply, audience engagement and all that, you know how much Bianca cares about-” Sutan was already blabbering, Top Model somehow going viral, the show one of the most watched reality programs in America, though Bianca would never call it that to anyone's face.
“I don’t care what Bianca cares about, and I don’t care about the people on twitter.” Violet knew she was being slightly unfair, her words harsh, but she couldn’t believe her husband's behavior, the man not even pretending to care about what she had said just moments earlier.
“Just because you don’t use it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value-”
Violet bit her lip, annoyance flaring up in her chest. This was the exact reason they had a no work in bed rule, even though she knew pointing that out to her husband would not do, whatever this was, any good, Sutan getting annoyed too. They didn’t get involved in each others work life, Sutan barely visiting her atelie, even though he was always on the front row anytime she did anything in public, Violet not able to tell anyone what her husband exactly did, except something with TV, the contestants on their show always surprised when Sutan showed up with both wife and daughter in tow to the premiere parties, and she liked it that way, they liked it that way, but right now she wanted to choke him.
“We need to talk about Melati.”
Violet saw Sutan deflate instantly, any fight there was in him gone, the man sitting up straighter.
“What?”
“You didn’t notice at dinner?”
Sutan had touched down in New York the week before, home for the long stretch this time, the both of them grounded for a while, Violet only working a selected amount of collaborations until after the christmas season had passed.
“No? She seemed fine.”
They had eaten at home, chicken and greens, Melati helping with cooking while Violet had been holed up in her home office, speeding through her emails so she could be with her family, her door slightly open. If anyone asked, it was so the pugs had easy access to run in and out, but in reality she just liked the sound of indonesian coming from the kitchen, the house filled with vowels and words she still didn’t understand, but that always brought her comfort. Her daughter and her husband laughing together, but that had all changed when they had sat down to eat.
Violet could feel her lip grow sore as she bit it yet again. Melati had been in her high school for a little over 4 months, both of her parents gone for all of september, Melati coming to Paris with them this time, spending her days with friends and roaming the streets. Violet knew it had most likely been a mistake to take her out of school so early, but she couldn’t deny her daughter a chance to visit her country, not when she knew Melati would only go if her dad was also there, the trip over the Atlantic apparently more than she could handle alone with her mother.
“She isn’t happy at her new school.”
“Baby.” Sutan smiled slightly, putting his phone out, reaching out for Violet. “You worry about nothing.”
“I don’t-”
“You do. Remember when she started preschool, and you took a week off of work?”
Violet remembered it, more than remembered it. She had been terrified about Melati starting preschool, terrified about her daughter not feeling safe, scared out of her mind that the other kids would bully her, that Melati would have to experience what she had gone through when she had left home, her fear only disappearing when their little ray of sunshine had shined so bright it had almost hurt to look directly at her, the girl chatting and telling her parents every single little thing about her day, Violet even knowing where Melati’s favorite rock was on the playground.
Sutan gently stroked Violet’s cheek. “Remember her first parent teacher conference and how you almost threw up before we had to go in?”
Violet nodded, her worry about Melati not making friends instantly taken over by a fear of her failing her classes. In Paris Melati had been in a private school, Sutan and her barely looking at each other before they had both decided that they would send her to the best school money could buy. Violet knew she had been ridiculous, Melati happy and excited about her homework, Sutan easily helping her with whatever she needed, their next door neighbor Mrs Johanson always happy to hear what Melati had learned when she came to visit in her tiny dresses and carrying treats for them to share. Violet had known that her daughter was doing well, but as she was sitting on the tiny chair in front of her classroom, surrounded by other parents, waiting to be called in, to hear how her daughter was doing, her entire body had been itching, her fingers tugging at her dress in a way they hadn’t done in years, not even Sutan’s presence at her side calming her, Violet cursing herself again and again for the fact that she hadn’t taken Frida with her, and then, suddenly, it was all over and Melati was doing fine.
“I’m still not sure we made the right choice.. She seems so, sad, all the time.”
“She is a teenager in high school.” Sutan smiled slightly “Give it time. She just started. No one is happy in high school.”
“I wouldn’t know, I never went.”
“Believe me, you didn’t miss much.” Sutan moved a little, and Violet took the invitation, settling down next to him, resting her head on his shoulder, their legs intertwining, her hand over his stomach, his slight belly making her smile, even if it wasn’t the situation, her husband growing softer than he’d like to admit in his late 50’s.
“It’s just.. She doesn’t speak the language Sutan.”
“And she won’t if we keep her in her comfort zone.” Sutan stroked Violet’s arm. “It’s the right choice.”
Violet knew her husband was most likely right, the reason Melati had even gone to a french private school in New York that they weren’t sure they’d stay, the trust between Violet and Sutan still so thin when they had relocated, their love for each other stretched and seconds from snapping apart. Violet couldn’t find it in her heart to take her daughter from her home, take her from her country and her friends, and then also force her to enter an american school, an entirely new curriculum too much on top of everything else.
They had settled down, Violet’s business blooming, her finances so stable she could pick and choose what projects she wanted to do, Sutan flourishing in the world of TV, his easy charms and his quick wit making him the perfect host.
Their lives seemed to be perfect, but Violet couldn’t let go of the nagging feeling, the feeling that Melati was unhappy. Melati had been as cold as ice forwards her since they moved, her daughter still polite and kind. Violet couldn’t remember the last time she had felt anything but quiet resentment towards herself from the girl, but if Melati needed to blame her for their new life, needed someone to be mad at, that would be okay. Violet could handle it.
“If you’re sure..”
“I am.”
Violet nodded, knowing her husband knew their daughter better than she did. She trusted him with her life, and she would also trust him with his, even though her stomach still felt upset.
