how did you read so many books??! that’s so cooll

do you have a favorite from this year? :)

most of my reading is done by listening to audiobooks while driving/doing chores/etc! I moved to receiving at work this year too which means I get to listen to books while I unpack books for like seven hours straight it rules. For physical books i literally just always have one on me and take it out whenever i can.

I read so many good books this year I Cannot narrow it down to just one so I'm doing ten under the read more <3

GLASS AMPHIBIANS 2024 FAVES BY GENRE KIND OF IF YOU SQUINT:

A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark: This book is just so vibrant. I was immediately in love with steampunk Cairo and the protagonist, Fatma, is easily one of my favorite female characters of all time. You need to read everything Clark writes i am so serious.

The West Passage by Jared Pechaček: this Expertly conveys incomprehensible enormity and humbling smallness in a way that i have never read before!!! Possibly one of the most unique fantasy novels I've read AND each chapter has beautiful illustrations done by the author! huge for fans of Piranesi or Monument Valley.

The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez: also one of the most unique high fantasies i've ever read this was fucking insane. An experiment in perspective and world building that honestly made me a danger to other people driving do not handle large machinery while trying to follow this. This is a love story to its blade-dented bone.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler: Duh. Post apocalyptic novels full of spiteful, unrelenting optimism and compassion are the most important things in the world. genre ever. idk what else to say like its octavia butler of course its gonna be on here

A Mask of Flies by Matthew Lyons: one of those horror novels that i desperately need to see made into a movie. For some reason I started this thinking there was no supernatural aspect and jesus christ was i wrong there's a Creature in here!!!! a very gross and scary and weird one!!! So action packed with a disgruntled, dislikable female protagonist I would literally follow to the ends of the earth she's so kick ass.

The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister: a more literary horror novel that i can really only describe as damp. I seriously considered dunking my copy in a creek so its appearance would better match whats going on inside. This fucked up family dynamic and decaying, sodden mansion was so up my alley, and Chronister's prose was so easy to fall into.

Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad: An actress returns to Palestine and ends up involved in a contentious production of Hamlet in the West Bank. Hammad's prose is unreal. She published a speech on Palestine and storytelling this year that goes perfectly with this book. The protagonist's relationship with Palestine is beautifully explored I could not put this book down.

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters: This is an extremely introspective, character driven novel about transfemininity and motherhood that I read in march and have thought about at least once a week since. Peters captures the messiness and complexities of queer identities so perfectly. She has new book coming out in 2025 that i am frothing at the mouth waiting for.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado: A memoir and a poem and a horror novel and a film criticism and a choose-your-own-adventure story and so much more. Machado plays with genres and tropes in order to articulate her time in an abusive lesbian relationship. Incredibly creative and addictive read, Machado is so talented. My mom had to stop me from trying to read this while waiting for a wedding to start.

The Women's House of Detention by Hugh Ryan: Researched with so much care and time, this follows the history of this prison and the lives of the people who were incarcerated there. Some are famous, like Angela Davis, but the vast majority of its inhabitants were forgotten. Ryan specifically follows queer individuals and looks at how the Women's House of Detention impacted the queer history and culture of Greenwhich Village. Must read for anybody interested in prison abolition.

Here is how he would write about them, probably... probably:

Bethesda Softworks, despite its cult status, stands as a monument to the intellectual decay of mainstream gaming. A company that found initial fame with The Elder Scrolls: Arena (1994), a game ambitious in scope yet primitive in execution, where players wandered vast, randomly generated dungeons that felt more like an algorithm’s fever dream than a coherent fantasy world. Bethesda's so-called "innovation" lay in its embrace of scale over message or story, a philosophy that would plague its later titles.

Daggerfall (1996) pushed this ethos further—boasting one of the largest open worlds in gaming history. Although one hollowed by its sameness, the game celebrated the freedom of choice and the versatility of its mechanics. It was a quintessentially American approach to RPGs: larger, louder, yet spiritually barren.

The Fallout series began under Interplay with Fallout (1997), a true rarity in gaming—a brutal, unflinching portrayal of a world ravaged by nuclear war, where players weren’t so much heroes as survivors, each choice a delicate balance between morality and survival. Inspired by 1950s American paranoia and fueled by biting satire, Fallout was a genuine cultural critique, confronting the excesses of post-war America while challenging the RPG genre’s own conventions. Fallout 2 (1998) took this dark satire even further, exposing the twisted ideologies that spring up in humanity’s attempt to rebuild civilization. Oblivion (2006) heralded the studio’s shift into the uncanny valley of popularity, where RPG mechanics were simplified and the world turned more into generic fantasy. It was a game that tried to be everything and succeeded at being nothing in particular.

Fallout 3 (2008) was a heretical adaptation of the Interplay series. Where Fallout had once been a biting satire of post-apocalyptic America, Bethesda turned it into a theme park of '50s kitsch and faux-moral choices. In Bethesda’s hands, Fallout became a series merely about atmosphere and style, with the franchise’s darkly satirical core sacrificed on the altar of commercial success.

Then came Fallout: New Vegas (2010), a rare and tragic exception to the series’ decline. Developed by Obsidian, a team with roots in Interplay, New Vegas recaptured the original games' moral ambiguity and wit, immersing players in a narrative that felt closer to Chinatown or Apocalypse Now than the simplistic hero’s journey so common in games. It was Fallout's last entry that understood it’s original spirit—dark satire, critique of human nature, and willingness to let players choose paths that were neither right nor wrong, but hauntingly realistic.

The true low point of Bethesda’s output lies in Skyrim (2011), a game so monumentally empty, so devoid of significance, that it became a runaway success precisely because it allowed players to project whatever meaning they wanted upon it. Here, Bethesda perfected the art of the illusion, of giving players a sandbox in which to create their own narratives because the developers had failed to create any themselves. Skyrim was the apotheosis of anti-art in gaming—a beautiful, empty shell, sold on the pretense of depth.

Fallout 4 (2015) and Fallout 76 (2018) took this philosophy to even more ludicrous heights. Fallout 4 was an exercise in “streamlining” to the point of self-parody, a game designed not for storytellers, but for hoarders. With Fallout 76, Bethesda stripped even the illusion of narrative away, a bizarrely cynical move that transformed its world into a vapid, multiplayer cash grab, foisting half-baked online mechanics onto a tired world already straining under the weight of uninspired storytelling.

Finally, Starfield (2023)—the space-faring adventure that promised players the stars and delivered little more than a soulless collection of procedurally generated planets. A celestial iteration of Skyrim's infamous hollowness, Starfield dared to go beyond Earth only to find, ironically, that it had nothing meaningful to say about space, exploration, or human existence.

In the end, Bethesda’s legacy is one of ambition shackled by intellectual bankruptcy. Their games are designed not to challenge or provoke, but to lull players into a stupor of mindless exploration, a simulacrum of depth that evaporates upon closer inspection. They are masterpieces of anti-design, worlds that insist upon their own importance yet remain profoundly empty—a fitting metaphor, perhaps, for an industry increasingly defined by spectacle over substance.

Ostatnio udało mi się wyrwać z takiej ciągłego rytmu, który nie obfituje w wydarzenia. Nie chcę ukrywać, że takie letargiczne egzystowanie jest czasem bardzo dobijające. Wczoraj jednak napisałem notatkę związaną z nową płytą mojego ulubionego zespołu, tak dziś zrecenzowałem na Steamie „Monument Valley”. Skończyłem ją w prawie trzy godziny, a jest to prosta gra logiczna wydana najpierw na urządzenia mobilne. Jednak z uroczą muzyką i stylem graficznym. Poniżej zamieszczę kopię tej recenzji, bo na platformie zapewne nikt jej nie zobaczy zakopanej pośród tysiąca innych. Jest po angielsku, ale to chyba nie będzie problemem:

tl;dr

Monument Valley is very simple logic games that operate on the premise of impossible figures and optical illusions, referred inside as „sacred geometry”. Levels designed with M. C. Escher’s spirit aren’t challenging, but very esthetically engaging. This could be one of the best tittles in the genre on the mobile, I don’t know that market nor platform, but Steam surely has better options for the mind-bending puzzles. Despite this, I have enjoyed each one of the 18 levels. That two-hour journey was a change of pace from my typical experience, consisting of brutally hard arcade-ish platformers. If you have a spare money, and aren’t discouraged by length, it is quite a nice title to go through on the one sitting. Probably even better to buy it with a sequel in the bundle, but I cannot say anything of that, as I haven’t played it.

Art

This is the strongest site of the title. I can almost sure that developer saw Escher’s „Relativity” or „Waterfall” on the internet or some art gallery and thought „I want that to be a game”. And here we are with a mobile hit from 2014 released for Windows in 2022. One of the puzzles is even placed on the waterfall from this Dutch painter. The optical illusions are quite interesting to be seen incorporated into a logic riddle, but here are used occasionally. Nevertheless, the vistas are quite memorable and well-designed, emitting this oneiric and surreal vibes. Although everything is still geometrical and sharp. Funny, how much can be done only by setting and color. As for the music it is also slowly flowing adding to that atmosphere. The closest I can describe soundtrack are the phrases „vaporware ambient” and „zen meditation mix”. Each section of the game is evoking different emotion, which is quite a nice touch.

Gameplay

Frankly, not the best. Even that visuals and climate are quite engaging, the levels aren't quite challenging. I have only stumbled for a while only at two moments, and my mind is not at the first freshness. For a logic game, you can demand more than only clicking the tiles. I understand though, that this is a port of a mobile game, so the bar is quite lower. It is still a great introduction for people who have the false idea that the genre is for the PhD-holders. Additionally, as I wrote in the section before, it is nice zen time in the accelerating world. Moreover, the original platform for this game reveals itself in the clunky controls, when you need to push some blocks, or rotate some elements.

Overall

I recall the years, quite a long time ago, when the flash games were at their prime. I was particularly interested in the „puzzle” section of the website. This is a nice nostalgic trip to the times as Monument Valley was released in 2014, at the mentioned heyday of small independent interactive creations. Although, the length/price ratio is not the best, it can be a nice form of slowing the tempo for one day. Unique art style, ambient melodies, and simple but engaging level design can make a night a little more cozy.

Princess Ida of Monument Valley had never felt so pressured in her life. Her journey had started as a simple one, navigating the geometric world around her step by step until someone got in the way.

Her angelic, ghostly voice and figure reminded her of all times past, plunging distress and guilt into her heart.

The Storyteller.

Nevertheless, she knew what her objective was (and she probably wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for the ghost in question) since she was overcome by greed long before she knew what to do with it. All this chatter about Sacred Geometry and monuments did her head in, but it was all she had ever known, all she had to work with. Her mistakes had led to the crumbling of Monument Valley, but she clenched her fists and shook her head, approaching the newest Monument.

The Box: In Which There Lie Strange Delights.

Her little feet had been walking on end through countless caverns and tricks of the mind. She could just… Stop. Let everything wither. Seven of the ten beauties of their valley had already been restored, here was a soft place to land…

Ida’s eyes darted around the space, a blue room with two doors and a button- It was one way or the other, with no true way out, so it seemed.

The Princess took a deep breath.

I suppose one more monument wouldn’t hurt.

And so, she embarked on the journey once more, only having her wayward senses to guide her along with the intricate surroundings and subtle idiosyncrasies of these worlds.

She closed her eyes after passing through three of the rooms, noticing that she could no longer move in place. So, she waited for something else to happen, for another the last of the Box’s pillar lights to shine…

And not long after, it did, spreading its effervescent purple, before she felt the ground shift beneath her, plunging her into a different place:

Geometrical claustrophobia.

If those two words really fitted in a sentence together, that would explain Ida’s panting breaths, the rush of adrenaline mixed with fear, left powerless behind a door- Faint tinkling filtered from outside, something akin to a musical box, and birds, and chimes… It was as if the world was opening up for her.

The princess took another deep breath, lingering before being launched into the space and all its openness without a second thought- Hardly processing where she was, she placed her hands on her head to steady her hat, monuments and all, before walking on forward. The platforms in front were all a muted beige, the lit-up pillars from before shining the way about her, standing tall in their grandeur. Ida simply had a task, and when she caught sight of the button that lay below some winding steps, she knew she had to go-

Until something else caught her eye.

Again, geometric in shape, causing her to furrow her brows. It was as if the Storyteller was taunting her now, with simple rhetorical questions that made her do nothing but doubt. Ida only had to look further, draw closer, to what seemed impossible in this world. Magnificence that existed beyond those grand statues that she had once pilfered in her greed. Something that felt remarkably delicate and dainty in its own way, like it was captured in time. Glimmering water, housing a collection of orange goldfish, swaying to and fro in a cubical tank. Her eyes darted from the button on the floor, her latest objective, to the minimal glass by her side… Until she found herself with her hands pressed against it, close to the tank, her breaths a mixture of sighs and excited pants, those eyes that were once contemplative, now awestruck.  

The display was nothing more than a few simple, natural fish, and the cyan-coloured waters that they inhabited, but Ida had never felt more at peace. She supposed it was helpful to stop and smell the roses (or perhaps, stop and admire the fish) every once in a while, to indulge, and take a step back from the weight behind her tasks.

Ida could still see the button out of the corner of her eye.

Instead, she shook her head, and spent an indecipherable amount of time with the creatures, not doing much more than watching them, and considering their lives. Not just her own.

A lurch in her stomach, a nagging feeling eventually consumed her, and the princess drew back from the glass.

“Hello, little fish.” She whispered softly, her gaze lingering one last time, before she adjusted her hat, straightened her pristine white dress, and fled.

Back at the hotel, we rested our feet and got bundled up for dinner and our walking tour. We stopped into the Three Lanterns, a nearby pub, for a traditional dinner, then walked around the embankment area for a bit, taking in the nighttime views of the London Eye and Big Ben as well as yet another Christmas market - there must be dozens throughout the city.

We hopped on the tube and headed to the Tower of London to meet our tour at the All Hallows Church at the Tower. The Ghastly Ghost Walking Tour began at 8pm and was a lot of fun. Our tour guide, George, was passionate about London’s sometimes gruesome and spooky history and he was a fantastic storyteller. Most of the stories revolved around either the Great Fire of London and the Blitz. We didn’t take many photos as they wouldn’t have been great in the dark, but we got to visit, among other sites:
