i had a story in my drafts about a boy who works in a coffeeshop and keeps his heart in a jar to collect dust in the highest shelf,

a customer befriends him and keeps pestering him to wear his heart, "wear your heart someday"

the boys tries it on one day, his world is no longer painted in shades of white and black and grey, he sees the colors of the sunset

but he also sees the fake tired smiles and the sadness on the faces of the customers, the ghosts that haunt them, "can i take it off now," he wonders each and every day, he imagines his friend's face and hears a barely audible 'not yet'

in the end, he returns his heart to its jar before he could see the happiness on his friend's face,

and due to this, he doesn't realize the next time he sees his friend that he had finally given up and locked his heart away too, because what's the point really?!
