devlog 1 - cursor and the horrors of game making. the agony and such of making a rewrite fangame

hello!! name's cursor/siffrin and i'm a poor loser making a fangame!! why did i commit to this i could have just made a fic but noooo i gotta pick up rpgmaker again

this devlog is made because. well. all devs do one ithink. also to write down my ocasional progress in this project!! this won't be monthly but whenever i have the time and got something to report yay. spare me from this hellhole

we begin 💥

ever since cookie run the darkest night got cancelled a few months ago and left us with only chapter 1 i did feel sad!! i liked the story!!! gingerbrave cool and fucking awesome moments. BUT!! because i am mentally ill,, i decided to rewrite the game myself and give it the ending it deserved to have!! will the ending be proper i dunno. i am still writing this stuff waugh. but hey it will have an ending at least

to gamedev stuff proper. i got rpgmaker mz around 2022 for the purpose of making a cr game still. an original one!! however after making a few stuff i left it in hiatus bc i had to focus on school (i still do. college is breathing on my neck dear lord). i still plan to continue that one but it will be after i'm done with this rewrite. in either way. i've been changing placeholder stuff for now,, such as menu icons and figuring out how to make the party have five members. also re learning how to use aseprite because i gotta make all sprites haha (breaks down)

i should remind folks that i am an artist/writer first and foremost. i will very likely go through pure trial and error while making and 'coding' all of this (why did i plan 14 chapters oh my godddd),, though i do have notes i took from the rpgmaker tutorial so i can refer to when i'm stuck whenever and hey!! forums are always a thing!! i wouldn't have figured how to have 5 party members if they weren't!!

to writing stuff. i've been planning the prologue and the locations of the first 3 chapters so far. as well as a vague idea of chapter 12 and the epilogue. with point A and point B set,, now i just gotta make the middle point. aka the rest of the game</3

the main party and a few relevant npcs and characters have already been set. as well as brainstoming stuff and showing said stuff to the gingerbrave council (personal friend server) for approval of sillyness. you guys are fucking awesome btw if you're reading this. also hi chat

mentally i've been setting a timeline of events. i plan to write these in a notebook so i can have them at anytime and not have to open my laptop whenever i get a cool idea. or dig through thousands of discord messages just to find an idea i wrote down in the moment. overall i believe writing (in comparison to art making and the game making process) will be the easier part for me. also i gotta decide for a proper name for the rewrite. naming it the same as the og is lame. i need something with more sauce. i'll figure it out. in the meantime. have this goober

SO MANY PIERCINGS (,,⟡o⟡,,)

so disclaimer, my toxic trait as a writer is that I treat piercings as kind of... malleable. Like I don't keep a concrete design doc for characters' piercings and I'll only choose some iconic ones to be 100% constant. THAT being said, my most common looks on the guys break down like this:

I think Amir's solidly in the lead with multiple dermals, nipples, navel ear/cartilage, septum + nostril, labret, eyebrow... PLUS his like... 9-12ish cock piercings. For me, his cock piercings are obviously his most iconic so I've got the strongest sense of how those are laid out and then I put a lot of "canon" importance on his collar bone dermals, multiple ear piercings, and nose jewelry for his beautiful nose. For Amir, he prefers all his hardware to be gold! He has some flashier pieces for his face and occasionally other piercings when outfits call for it but he loves loves loves gold and prefers to stick with the warm look it gives. He doesn't mind rose gold so much either but it's definitely a second-place choice for him.

You can tell when I make atlas sort of chibi-fy him we place a lot of importance on his ear/eyebrow/nose piercings as "most iconic" (if he's not naked)

Mori USED to be a bigger piercings guy but is less so these days. A detail that OCCASIONALLY gets seen in art (this didn't make it onto his game sprite) is that he has a little notch in his left ear from someone ripping out a piercing during a fight. So canonically, he's like at a 0-2, and he'd probably keep it to his ears or possibly an eyebrow. Definitely a stainless steel guy.

For Akello we actually experimented with a ton of different facial piercings for him, and I'll be honest we couldn't decide if silver or gold looked better. In the end, we decided to tone down his facial piercings in order to boost his Middle-Aged Dilf vibes. Currently, his sprite doesn't have piercings but his ears are still pierced and he does occasionally wear jewelry in them. I'm putting him at like a 2-4 piercings total.

Raath has NO piercings cause he's combat-utilitarian and doesn't want to give his opponents any glaing targets to rip out of him.

Marcel has one ear pierced (gold is his favorite) and has talked about getting his nipples pierced to start arguments with Akello, who knows better than to take the bait but still makes >:/ face

To be fair, I think Kazu is the only person giving Amir a run for his money but he keeps all his piercings on his skull. He's got three top cartilage piercings in each ear, plus an industrial, and several helix piercings in each. He also has 2 huge gauges probably somewhere in the ballpark of 30ishmm, these are- what I consider- his most iconic piercings so they're consistently depicted. He normally just has see-through gauges but I like to think he mixes them up with different materials or designs depending on the day. Kazu's also got eyebrow piercings and occasionally a septum ring that shows up in certain art. Everyone WANTS his nipples pierced but so far no dice, he's a tease.. I would say in total he's probably got about 15-20ish piercings that he wears regularly.

I love how I've developed her story so far and I LOVE how she types when I play as her!!!!!!!! She's so sillay

She's a mutant troll that poses as an Indigo with the sign Sagisces (pretty much stole another troll's sign and lusus for disguise). She's based on a lot of rumors of mutant trolls (not saying they didn't exist, obviously Karkat exists) I heard about when I was on Alternia, plus the middle ages as a whole.

Sometimes she wears the big armor she made for herself, but usually she just looks like most other trolls. (Baggie hoodie, big pants. The only other different thing is she wears fingerless gloves)

She's a Lord of Life and a derse dreamer. Also she has a beetle as a lusus!

I'll probably draw more of her later.

Another that I love is called Disfigured Dreamself!!!!!!!! (I stole another alter's artstyle for this 👅)

She's an oc that me and a friend have made for our MSPFA Bloodboil (which doesn't have many panels to it yet at the moment but yah)

I can't spoil anything but I will say she has been BOILING in my thinkpan. She's got a lot to her!

To not give spoilers to anything, all I'll say is that she holds Aradiabot's place in Homestuck but definitely does NOT act the same! She plays a much bigger role in the story than you might think. Bloodboil is not your average swap!!!!!!!!

My long rant about my first time touching CV after 10 years: long paragraphs incoming!!!

Just started replaying curious village and omg how does this game actually manage to be so eerie and creepy in a subtle way. The sceneries of st. mystere just feel so empty and dilapidated in some way with their early graphics quality, including the puzzle interface and everything (the limited memo function is driving me crazy btw) And on top of that, layton's front facing sprite just staring directly at you is kind of unsettling. And needless to say ramon's face still scares me. 😭

The puzzle clear screen from CV just seems so empty and bleak compared to the other games, and also I've noticed once you submit an answer, the music slowly fades away instead of just stopping, which makes it even more nerve wrecking 😭

I never had replayed CV ever since I first finished it 10 years ago. One of the biggest reasons why I love playing this series is its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere, and the vibe of CV is the complete opposite of that. That meant there wasn't really a need for me to replay it like the other games, and even now, I'm just doing it just to get more lore from the series.

My first encounter with CV was actually around 14 years ago, but 9 year old me was too dumb to proceed far enough into the game lol (and I had no more access to the game after not too long since the DS wasn't mine). It wasn't until 2014 when I remembered about the game and got the chance to finish it.

Maybe the reason why CV feels more uneasy for me could be because everything in that game is now a blurry memory for me, like a dream you had as a kid. Solving the first few puzzles was fun though, remembering each puzzle and how I solved it as a little kid. And I'm looking so much forward to do the Inn minigame! Really loved it sm as a child, it felt like playing a cute dress up game except it's furniture.

Rn i'm still in the middle of chapter 2, this time it'll take a while for me to finish the game since I also got work, but I hope I'll come back to write another update once I progress more into the game!

(As for changing the expression, try erasing some parts of the face (or change the layer if the sprite is drawn) and/or draw over them- Since the canvas is small, try making the thickness of your brush thinner)

Since you were talking about games, I know you're also a Dai Gyakuten Saiban/Great Ace Attorney fan (so am I! I followed you originally because you're into both it and BSD hehe), and I'm curious to know your thoughts on it! 💖 Who are your favorite characters/relationships/cases/parts? (My fave character is Benedict/Graydon. Yes I have a tendency to become obsessed with minor characters no one else cares about, oops) Did you play it with the Chronicles version (I assume so, like most people did) or are you an og who followed along with the fan translation like I did? One of the best/funniest parts of getting into that duology was coming across Souseki and being like "if I had a nickel for every time I've encountered a piece of media that had an anime version of real-life author Natsume Souseki, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice" lmao 😭

Since they're two of my favorite media, sometimes I try to imagine how a BSD/DGS crossover would work, and which characters would get along, though granted the only things they really have in common are detective work/mysteries, an old-fashioned aesthetic, and some similar themes lol... I just really love both of them a lot 🥹💖 Ryuunosuke and Atsushi being the exasperated straight men to the genius comedy duo that is Sholmes and Dazai? lmao (also Iris and Kyouka and their bunnies 🥹)

I need to play Hatoful Boyfriend. I've played lots of visual novels but that one is still on my to-play list (I don't know how seriously I'll be able to take it with bird sprites instead of actual human facial expressions, even though I fully trust that it is as good as its reputation says it is, but I'll just have to see for myself lmao)

Hsjfdnvskdf ok so I don't know what keeps happening to me with TGAA because I love it so much but I can't seem to write proper meta on it so. I just keep reiterating how much I like it lol. I got into it a bit later - I knew it existed almost since it came out in Japan but since I hadn't played original Ace Attorney, I avoided it for a long time. Then I saw a playthrough of the fan translation Case 1 and was hooked. By that point, I knew there was going to be a full English release so I waited for that because I wanted so badly to play it through! It's such a good game.

Oh, Graydon was interesting. That case was really fun, if it weren't for the fact that I figured out the key evidence really early and I kept trying to present it too soon aojsbsidhb. Graydon as a character was great because he's exactly as he appears but then there's just that bit more that fleshes him out and made him the slightest bit more sympathetic while not detracting from his actions. He was cool. (I actually had an idea for an after trial fic with him and the Skulkins but I don't think I'll ever get around to writing it :/)

Oh yeah I flipped out when I saw Natsume - my whole brain stopped (this was before my BSD obsession btw so this was very strange to me lol) and I shrieked out "NATSUME SOSEKI???" and my mom from the other room was just "???". yeah. And then he showed up again in BSD and I just said "...hi Natsume".

My favourites are the Mikotobas! Both Susato and Yuujin! They're such sweet people aghhhhh they deserve the world. But I really love all the main cast tbh. Ryuunosuke is such a dork but there's real personality to him, Sholmes is the perfect adaptation of that character, Gina should get all the puppies and friends she wants, and though I have some mixed feelings on him, I hope van Zieks gets a fucking break at some point (or just keep friendly tormenting him. I think it's good for him actually. unlearn your prejudices and relearn how to smile, you edgy vampire man.). Kazuma's arc was excellent and I wish so badly we could've gotten a true reunion scene with less of the baggage... actually, thinking about Kazuma for too long makes me ill. You essentially watch him break in the middle of court and it sucks. It sucks man.

And Iris was a standout character to me because her archetype could've so easily been bland or annoying but instead she's a realistic kid who happens to be a genius and she's kind and gets sad and angry and has depth and I would give her a big hug.

In terms of case specific characters, I liked Haori/Rei a lot, just because her dynamic with Susato was so silly and she's a cool gifted forensics student! She's awesome! I want to see her again!

However, my favourite was Olive. OLIVE. I adore her and I adore the twist with her. God she's so passive aggressive. Like damn. Have I mentioned that I adore her character? If Olive has only 1 fan then I am that fan. I wished we had gotten to consult with her again, even though that wouldn't have made much sense... just because she was interesting to me and I would've liked to have seen her character more fleshed out.

I'd really love to see a lot of these characters again. I've seen some people talking about Kazuma Asougi Investigations but tbh I'd really like to see Susato Mikotoba Investigations with Haori and Yuujin helping out! It'd be neat to see more Meiji Japan and Susato continue to grow as a character in her own right, since she started that journey in Chronicles. Oh well. I know that's a pipe dream but still.

I bet Kyouka would really find Iris's inventions fascinating and love to listen to how they work and stuff! I think they'd get along tbh. The idea of Sholmes and Dazai ever interacting terrifies me. Keep them away from each other. Please.

As for Hatoful, I am biased but I'd say it is well worth a playthrough. Given you like both DGS and BSD, I'd say you'll probably like it. My mom (who has also played it) and I were chatting about it recently and thinking that weirdly enough, BSD gives us a lot of the same vibes... like it's nowhere near identical, but that kind of desperate darkness where the characters are not who they appear to be at first and everyone has a different motive for doing what they do, but it's also not taking itself too seriously and it's still kinda silly... yeah. Same feel. It's better to go in with no expectations but I'm thinking of making a post later about why people should play that game... it's still one of my favourites of all time.

About the stock bird images: I know it's weird. I know it's weird that they're birds. But the best part of this game - to me, anyways - is that for as much as it is a gag, the story leans into it so heavily that you will quickly realize the main plot only makes logical sense if the main cast are birds and the player the only human. Like, it literally would not make sense otherwise. Please play it. It's wacky, it's zany, the characters have a good amount of depth, it's mildly traumatizing, it's one of the best things I've played and I feel it's become an inscrutable part of my identity. I am still obsessed with it many years later. That almost never happens to me. It's that good.

OH btw i did get kamitsubaki city ensemble and it aint half bad!!! specifically i bought the main game at 5 bucks (its going for that specific style of rhythm game pricing where the main game is like pennies but the DLC is a bajillion doll hairs LOL) which I found worth it for what it is, I dunno about the fifty buck season pass tho, I'd wait until I was sure I really REALLY liked the gameplay first

i think this style of rhythm gameplay is called 7k or 7key in a lot of circles (osu thing?) I DONT know how i feel about it. i think im getting used to it and finding it pretty fun, although the spacebar thumb notes are really hard for me LOL

the UI is super mobile game which makes sense because it has a mobile version and the gameplay seeeeems like itd be more fun on mobile at first BUT i do think its odd because like...... the beatmaps are NOT made for thumb players.... even for finger players it seems like some of those edge double notes would be kind of tough... so as a thumb player i went with the pc ver <3

the songs are fun though, like not just the existing songs but also the game's general score is nice and the theme song Cradle RULES. the beatmaps seem fine so far, although I am not practiced enough to go past normal mode yet so we shall see. I do think the game needs some colour options though, the colour that the lanes light up is like a few degrees too similar of a blue to the colour of the hold notes and it fucks me up constantly orz also the 7lane side lane notes are yellow and the middle spacebar note is white which is a good contrast, but part of me wants a bit more colour coding, its hard to keep track of it all. I also don't care for the colour coding vanishing when its a double note, now i have no clue what lane its in graaaaaahhhhhh

BUT its fun so far. be careful about playing it on a low powered or old computer if you have issues with flashing, I had a bunch of weird sprite clipping in and out issues during the cutscenes on my old laptop. it slowed down after an hour so maybe it was an issue booting up? the colours and flashing rhythm sections are probably rough for some as well as another warning

the plot is kind of fun, im enjoying it because im 26 and can no longer deal with gacha games BUT i still like mascot character rhythm games so its nice to have this game just as is for a fiver (ignoring the odd DLC pricing LOL) i like the haunting sort of surreal aspects so far and the characters are cute and fun ALTHOUGH it is odd seeing Kafu with this sort of personality. shes not bad shes just a lot sweeter and peppier than I and I think a lot of people pictured her LOL we all just pictured her as like kind of brooding idk.... the others are how i picture them though, especially coko as pretty outgoing and sekai as kind of quiet and weird <3 I ALSO like the weird freak thang.. whale? i forgot its name. i have the flu you have to be nice to me.

LEMME TELL YOU though. i never realized. until this game. how unhinged iyowa song beatmaps can get. i should have expected because of all those like speeding up slowing down tempo changey parts in some of their songs but MAN. it was like the scariest beatmap I'd ever seen, Leave You on The Back of The Earth. I really did feel like I was in a falling elevator

First: I'm getting (even more) OBSESSED with Ynfgs (YUME NlKKl FANGAMES), they are just so fun!!! (And one of my F/os is from one of those Ynfgs!!)

Second: I'm also getting more into different fandoms (Dandy's world and Sprunki) and i hope to still stay in them!!! and don't forget about them (Like how i did with class of 09)
