They broke the rule of no attachment for each other. What Obi-Wan wanted to say for so long could only be ripped out of him after his heart was already broken. There is no past tense of love for Obi-Wan about Anakin. He loved him, he still loves him, into his death he loves him. Despite everything, it's unconditional. Anakin had Padme and the Ch*ncellor, Obi-Wan only had his former Padawan. He was his world. He'll always love him.
