i have been lurking in your asks for this moment: for the spotify wrapped fic prompt, #10!!
i'm going to ignore the very obvious and very painful daniel/hob implications of this song because i want to finish the comics first before writing anything outside of the show's canon. so have this instead!!
--
Dream had been visiting Hob more frequently than he'd like to admit. It all started with Dream wanting to carve out a small place of solace in his life, and what place was more perfect than The New Inn? Built for him like an altar for an absent god.
Though these days, he'd been more present than ever. He wished he had the privilege to say he'd been drunk the first night it happened, or the next night, and the next. But Dream, Lord of Dreams and Ruler of Nightmares, always knew what was going on, and what desires he'd recklessly indulged in again and again.
Tonight was no different. By now, Hob was a veteran in making Dream feel more than welcome. It was all too easy to fall into Hob's arms and into his bed above The New Inn. Somewhere down the line, Dream had made himself vulnerable to Desire's machinations.
But he had somehow convinced himself that it was alright, as long as Hob wasn't vulnerable.
Some nights they talked afterwards, and Dream wasn't quite sure whether it amplified or quieted his regrets. This was one of those nights.
"Tell me about the Dreaming," Hob said, his head propped up on his arm as he looked down at Dream.
"What do you wish to know?"
"I don't know. Everything. You don't work alone, do you?"
"...No, I suppose I don't, anymore. I have Lucienne. And Matthew."
"Ah, Matthew, yeah, we've met. Why does he talk by the way? Nearly gave me a heart attack the first time he spoke to me."
"He was human, before. He died in his sleep and became a raven of the Dreaming."
"Oh," Hob said. He paused. Dream observed the shadows cast on his face by the moonlight. "So if I die in my sleep, I get to stay at your place? As a raven?"
Dream felt the corners of his mouth lift up. A silly notion. "You do not have to die. You will always be welcome in the Dreaming, Hob."
Hob smiled down at him, and Dream felt a warm fire in his chest. "Thank you, love. But what I meant is I never had the chance to visit your, y'know. Your place. Is it a castle?"
"Yes, I suppose you could call it a castle," Dream said.
Hob hummed, and tapped Dream's chest with his free hand. "A wild thing," he said after a few seconds.
"What is?" Dream asked.
"I was just some peasant when we first met," Hob said, his eyes lost in memory. "Thought you were some ignorant lord. In the back of my mind, I thought were you just making fun of me, asking to meet you after a hundred years. Never thought this," he gestured to their bodies, naked under the covers, "would ever happen. Y'know? A wild thing."
Dream hummed in agreement.
"Guess I'm lucky, huh?" Hob chuckled, his fingers still tapping on Dream's chest. "Hey. Would you bring me to your castle some day, show me around?"
"Perhaps," Dream replied.
"Tease," Hob chastised. Then he pressed a kiss on Dream's forehead, then on his nose, and finally on his lips. "I adore you. You know that? I love you, Dream."
Dream froze. He looked into Hob's eyes, saw the fondness in them, and knew that he meant it.
This was just supposed to be a brief respite, some semblance of comfort that he did not have in his day-to-day life. He thought it was the same for Hob, that Dream was just someone immortal to hold onto once in a while. But it wasn't. Not anymore.
I should not have come here, he thought, tearing his gaze away from Hob's. He did not have the heart to say it out loud.
Dream stood up from the bed, already clothed.
This will be the last time, he thought. It was what he thought every time. And maybe tonight it will finally come true. No, it should come true. Lest he destroy even Hob Gadling, like he has many times to his other lovers before. It always ended in tragedy, whether Desire was involved or not, and Dream didn't want that for him.
A hand shot up from the covers to grip his wrist.
"Stay. Stay, darling," Hob said, sitting up. "Won't you stay?"
Dream turned.
Hob's eyes shone, watery in the moonlight.
It should not be fair, Dream thought, for Desire to easily toy with me like this.
"I cannot stay any longer," Dream said.
"Why not?" Hob said, with all the petulance of a child. "Come back. Just for a while."
Dream resisted the urge to climb back in the covers with him. That was his sibling speaking.
"I apologize. I will make sure your dreams are pleasant tonight, and on every other night."
"Will you be coming back?" Hob asked. "You sound like you're never coming back."
Dream said nothing.
"I can wait. I will."
"I know," Dream said. He didn't add, "beloved."
"I'm not sorry," Hob said, gripping Dream's wrist even tighter. "But I won't say it again, if it means you'll stay."
Something cold and heavy sat in Dream's chest.
"So don't go," Hob said, "please."
Dream dissipated into thin air, but not quickly enough that he did not see a tear roll down Hob's cheek. He can still feel his grip on his wrist.

I am submitting my formal request for folk music ~opinions~ ❤️
Folk music is another one of those genres that’s hard to pinpoint. It’s basically been merging with country and Americana for years. Further, are people asking for traditional folk? Folk metal? Indie folk? Baroque folk? But it’s all folk! Folk, folk, folk. I’ve written it so many times that it doesn’t look like a word. Anyway, I went contemporary/indie/roots folk for this. Started with more woodsy stuff, too.
• Empty Northern Hemisphere by Gregory Alan Isakov. Gregory Alan Isakov is one of those artists I adore and I think he pretty consistently nails it when it comes to folksy themes and instrumentation. His Weatherman album is pretty fantastic. He’s probably considered indie folk, if I had to put a finger on it.
• My Gal, My Guy by Darlingside. The first song I ever heard by them was called Harrison Ford, which is also pretty good, but there’s just something about this song! Also indie folk.
• Oats In The Water by Ben Howard. He has another great one called In Dreams. His earlier music sort of feels like standing in a dead forest. I can’t really explain it beyond that. His newer stuff is a bit more atmospheric, but it’s good.
• Bavarian Porcelain by Sea Wolf. His song Dear Fellow Traveller got some fandom airtime, but his whole discography is pretty good and soaked with forest imagery. My favorite album is probably White Water, White Bloom, but Cedarsmoke is very kind to me.
• Let This Remain by Alana Henderson. Henderson keeps making her way into my playlists. She sort of reminds me of Enya, sort of reminds me of something reminiscent of the Dresdon Dolls, but it’s just enough that she’s got this incredible unique sound.
• Francis by Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover. This is another one that I have to physically restrain myself from looping. Their voices blend really well, and I’d also consider it my official endorsement of both their music. Heynderickx’s No Face and Show You A Body kill me and Conover’s collaboration on the everything in winter album is worth a listen.
• Deep Green by Marika Hackman. I feel like we can call Marika Hackman folk. Her voice is haunting, her lyrics stick, and she does really neat stuff instrumentally, and she had the folk sound. Not coffeehouse music, so I had to look to see what she’s categorized as. Alternative, it was. Her new album is less folksy, but We Slept At Last definitely is.
• Darlin Corey by Amythyst Kiah. If you haven’t heard any of her work, go listen as soon as possible. She’s got this deep, beautiful sound and writes about isolation in a way that really resonates. It’s hard to find artists who make folk that sounds a hundred years old, but she nails it every single time.
• Love Me Like You Used To by Lord Huron. Lord Huron is an old favorite, and I do think their Long Lost album is my favorite, despite Strange Trails being so well-known. Nothing makes you wanna awoo the way these guys do.
• Traveling On by The Decemberists. I’m a Decemberists fan first, person second. Sometimes I go about my day and “street side smokers, holy rollers” pops into my head at random. Hopefully, you will share my plight.
• Ofelia by Kiltro. Kiltro plays a mixture of shoegaze and Chilean folk. If that doesn’t sound like the best fucking time ever get AWAY from me. Creatures of Habit bumped all year before I graduated.
• The Weight by Amigo the Devil. Darker folk. I think he’s on a playlist called Murderfolk, which just about sums it up. I might put Amigo the Devil in the same camp as AJJ in terms of sound. Slightly different in lyricism.
• Northern Wind by Liza Anne. Their new stuff isn’t folk, but their old stuff is definitely indie folk. I sometimes describe them as drinking cold water, and I think that definitely sticks with their Two album.
As always, I have no idea what I’m talking about. Hope this is good!

Valerie Coronado 🌊
first attempt at a character collage! which im doing instead of writing! yippee! anyway, it’s garish because im not an artist and certainly not a collage-er (?), but it’s so fun so who cares
Valerie is one of my favorite archetypes in fiction - a trickster, mask bearer, just a straight up liar sometimes. In the years that I've had these characters, Valerie, like all the others, has kind of shifted across different personality types/roles, but what's always remained constant is that she's wickedly smart and likes to keep the scope of her observations to herself, tucked away until she can use them to her advantage. She's a strategist above all else, and the most fun thing about her character, for me, is that those strategies aren't always used to win. Sometimes the aim of the game is just to prove a point.
A part of writing I really enjoy is researching the cultures or backgrounds that my characters originate from (twofold - their ethnicity/nationality and which part of the story's main setting they grew up in/are coming from, since they're all there at the start of the book). For Wayfarers, this is a teeny bit complicated to implement because the world is fictionalized, but still very doable and very fun! Valerie is Brazilian but mostly grew up on the equivalent of the US East Coast, which has been an interesting contrast to reconcile - the tropical, industrial São Paulo vs. quiet, sometimes frigid northeast Maine. One of my favorite things I've found while researching Brazilian culture(s) is the tradition of giving the first slice of cake to a guest of honor/loved one on your birthday! So sweet, and connects to a detail I love about Valerie - she's very reserved and a bit rusty with displays of affection, so her fondness for her friends (whether she calls them that or not) tends to peek out through little actions and gifts. Nothing loud, nothing showy, but always personal and meaningful.
Valerie is quite enigmatic and first glance would suggest she much prefers solitude and familiarity, but underneath her carefully withdrawn exterior, she's wildly ambitious and curious. She's been in one place for a while now, but she's mulled over the idea of traveling somewhere new (and preferably sunny) for a long while. (Lolha's recruitment offer, then, is very convenient.)
Some songs that I think suit her:
Metaphor - The Crane Wives
Ouroboros - Charming Disaster
Show You a Body - Haley Heynderickx
November - Sparkbird
Too Sweet - Hozier

currently writing a v depressing shameless fic so here are some songs that remind me of ian's arc!
tappin' out, in my head i see bright lights, riding in, i think i'm feeling it now just like you did
i don't wanna feel better, no one's ever gonna love me like that again, i don't wanna get over you, i wanna sit with you in bed
you could still be what you want to, what you said you were, when i met you
i wanted nothing but for this to be the end, for this to never be a tied and empty hand, if all the trouble in my heart would only mend, i lost my dream, i lost my reason all again
dragons have silent eyes, cracked eggshells, fireflies, i don't wanna tame you, i don't wanna tame
when the night was full of terror, and your eyes were filled with tears, when you had not touched me yet, take me back to the night we met
it was more a mirage, in sickness and health, i showed you a body, like a cluttered garage
i can't be the same thing to you now, i'm just gone, just gone, how could i say goodbye?
i don't hate my body i'm just afraid of it, finding my self worth was never worth it, i wanna leave this party, i wanna soak my brain in bleach

neeko nidalee for the songs thingy!!!!! girls :3
girls indeed!!!! i love them so much
so, here goes the list:
— “Giving In To The Love” by AURORA because i felt like i needed to give them an AURORA song and like come on nidalee give in to the love
— “Paradise” by Satanicpornocultshop because fear of loving is a recurring motif in their relationship (even tho the melody doesn’t really fit them imo)
— “Show You a Body” by Haley Heynderickx (ANGST WARNING)
— “Observer Effect” by The Nychillaharmonic (angst warning but less hurtful this time)
— the mandatory brazilian song this time is “Só Sei Dançar Com Você” by Tulipa Ruiz and Zé Pi (“I only know how to dance with you”)
i purposely avoided the glass animals songs you mentioned in your post to challenge myself (but theyre really good!!)
