New Tax Year Resolutions

(no, it's not an April Fools thing)

I've always had strong opinions about how January 1st is a really stupid time to make resolutions. Especially in Britain. It's freezing. It's dark by 4pm. You've only just made it through Christmas, and you feel exhausted and kinda depressed. You've probably got a cold. All you want to do is hide under a blanket until Spring arrives.

I also know that a new tax year is ... not something to get excited about. Buuuut it is genuinely feels like a good time for a new start - the days are getting longer, things are growing and changing every day, you've probably still got a cold but somehow you don't feel so annoyed about it.

So, I've decided it's time to get some focus. And I'm writing it down here as a post, because saying things in public makes me significantly more likely to actually do them.

I had a lot of fun over the past three months just doing whatever I wanted, when I wanted, but I've got a bit frustrated with flip-flopping all over the place. I'll sit down to, say, draw a picture of a person, and my brain will instantly start whirring around all the things involved which I want to practice, and the list is ... extensive:

Heads - facial features, muscles, the skull, expressions, different types and shapes of heads.

Hair - styles, hair types, shading, stylisation.

Anatomy - basic proportion, different body shapes / types.

Posing - fluid movement, active rather than static poses, camera angles.

Clothing - folds, how clothes hang on the body, fabrics, styles.

Colouring - colour theory, palette choice.

Shading - shadow placement, types of shading, spot blacks.

Medium - digital painting? Markers? Pencils? Inks? Watercolours?? Gouche??? When are you going to try gouche, huh, huh????

Backgrounds - just ... just so much stuff my head hurts aaaaaa

... and that's just drawing a person, something I've done thousands of times over the years in the course of making comics - it's not even getting into any of the other art areas I'm interested in. I'll sit down and I'll have so many things I want to learn and try, that I won't be able to concentrate on anything properly and I'll feel slightly hysterical.

SO.

I want to start focusing on one thing at a time. Maybe just for a week or so on each thing to start with? I don't want to trap myself too much. I'm going to start with learning about heads, because I've had that one goddamn Andrew Loomis book on my desk for two months at this point, and I really should get it back to the library.

It's my ... my ... okay, I'm gonna call it my Spring Resolution, because New Tax Year Resolution does sound a bit rubbish.

THE WAY I GASPED WHEN I SAW THIS IN THE INBOX,, i'm in LOVE with this take on SR reader. like. cupid pierced my heart love. i cannot get over how beautiful she looks,, you drew her outfit so WELL AAA i especially love the boots!!! with the additional red ribbons wrapped around them!!!! HER POSE AND FACIAL EXPRESSION TOO???? it's so playful and just how i imagined her overall demeanor to be HNGNJHNGME 🥺🙏 her hair (WITH A RIBBON IN IT) is beautiful too, framing her face like that ,,,,, i'm losing it ,,, i'm gonna be staring at this for a long time now.

Haven’t... haven’t posted any of our Random Cats before, so no idea how much anyone would care? But here’s our most recent one that we’ve drawn, Hopstorm (along with her randomiser gene data from our Cat Randomiser. Sometimes it really just throws us a cat that makes our brain go brrr, and then we just have to draw them, don’t we.) She is trans and a creachure. Also why is it so hard to find photos of oriental medium/longhairs in good sitting positions, I basically gave up and referenced shorthairs for pose and then stared at photos of @pangur-and-grim‘s Pangur for a while in hopes I’d end up with a decent result on the fur lay. Did I succeed? Who knows! not me.

(A lot of time that I spend doing these is also spent going “how would wideband affect this aaaAAA” because most images of wideband cats are the high (Shaded? Tipped?) wideband black ticked tabbies (Golden British Shorthairs) or extreme (Chinchilla) wideband black tabby persians. I’ve found like, one image of a probably-medium wideband non-ticked black tabby. This doesn’t help me with what it does when it’s interacting with cinnamon tabby colouration, never mind this cinnamon+ticked tabby+mink colourpoint combo. So uh. I guessed something that I don’t think is accurate at all and screamed internally for a while) (she still looks classy even if we did mess up that point. We can just disregard the Wideband square anyway, it’s our generator and our cat design, we can do what we want.) (also I really need to figure out a good way to do ticked tabbies. Maybe I will make a new brush for it for myself or something?)

Hello! I have appeared to hopefully not rant too long about how amazing and unique your art style is! OKOK, can we first talk about figure? Like, the poses, clothes, hair, etc, just the entirety of the characters you draw have such distinct silhouettes? And I know from reading a thing or two about art/animation classes, generating a good solid silhouette is like ‘good character deisgn/art composition 101’! And I can say with upmost certainty, you hit the nail on the head and then some.

Secondly; oh god how long is this gonna be; facial expressions? All the characters you draw have this air of …. Royalty? Or maybe it’s more self-confidence/regal-ness or all three. Which imo is so hard to capture?? Like you draw your ocs and the like and they’re staring at me with the self confidence of someone who has nothing to lose? Which is a life goal, gosh darn. That and you have a very trademark way of draw eyes/eyelashes that really gives yer art the edge of fantasy no matter the subject material.

Third off, you can draw women, case closed.

Forth, goshsh this is getting long I am so sorry your art is just aaaaaa-, colours. Gosh darn Damien, colours are a tool your wield like nobodies business. I love the topographic way you layer your colours and highlights and shading and the vibrancy of your pieces always blow me away. And lighting shshsjshjs *the most chef kiss that has ever been chef kissed* The way you colour is so you? Like unique and I’ve never seen someone do so the way you’ve niched for yourself. And I think that’s truly special! I’m so happy you put art out that is so unique and creative and beautiful bc you’re so cool? And it’s like seeing apart of someone I really look up to!

Fifth; ok this is ridiculous Galen calm tf down; oh yeah, that really sounded like a conclusion huh? Yeah I though so too but then I remembered your plague doctor pieces and like- you can draw clothing? Which is a skill so beyond me at this point; I’m jealous lol >:0 Like the fabric is so flowy and detailed? And the stitching is so there and not forgotten and I love that bit of detail. Also also, the way it all fits so realistically around the character instead of looking like you just draped it on or drew it on top all stagnant like. — uh yes, this shall conclude Galen’s: ‘let’s write a novel about a super cool artist mutual’s artstyle bc he got carried away again!’ :,))

I appreciate it a ton Galen! I really don't know how to express gratitude properly which I would hate to make someone think im just soaking it up and leaving but I really do love how you break down exactly what you like about something, it helps me in knowing what is liked about my art so I can hang onto that part and make sure it's present always, well in this case it's basically everything but at least I know I have a bunch of things going that someone loves.

And don't worry about something being long! I love reading rants of any kind, it's better to let out thoughts unrestricted and sometimes writing an essay on why you like something gets the point across better than just "Yeah its cool I like it :)" which is fine too of course but still.

I'm not exactly the best at explaining things but ill tell you some stuff to keep in mind while drawing!!

Line of action

The line of action is the direction in which your character moves. When trying to create a more fluid and expressive pose, try to keep the line of action as smooth as possible. For example:

The line of action here (the teal line) is very curvy. The person shown here wants to squash that bug, but isn't very into it.

Here however, the line of action shows that this person absolutely DESPISES that bug and is dead set on killing that thing (also dont get me wrong, i like bugs but this was the first example i thought of lol). A smoother line of action within your character poses helps get the point of your pose across easier.

Expression variation

When drawing character expressions, try and go further by trying to show what division of that emotion they are feeling. What i mean by this is; say for example your character is happy. Sure you can go ahead and draw a regular happy face, but take it a step further by showing Why they are happy.

These are happy expressions, but the reason why they are happy can be shown too!

As for figuring out how to draw different expressions, im still figuring that out myself and all i can say is practice!! I have bunches of pages in my sketchbook dedicated to expression practice. I also find it easier to draw a certain expression by making the same face as the face im trying to draw.

Color shading

The color palette/ shading of your drawing can greatly affect the vibe your drawing gives off. All i have to say about this is to SHADE WITH ANALAGOUS COLORS!! Analagous colors are colors directly beside each other on the color wheel. Using those kinds of colors makes your art itself more vibrant.

In example A, analagous colors were used and in example B, black and white tones are used. Ex. A is more bright and sticks out more than Ex. B, at least to me it does. ( I guess this part is more of a stylistic choice rather than concrete information on art in general, but i think it looks better)

You mentioned it in your colouring tutorial so I’m curious how you draw your eyes. If you don’t mind, can you give some tips on how you design characters? All the designs you have look super nice (big fan of your displaced au, the twins look so nice!)

aaaaaa!!!!!! thank you!! i’m super glad you like my au and designs!!! :D i hope you meant colour because i have Chronic Stupid and have already drawn these eyes and i’m too lazy to redo them but anyway, i start with the base colours

and then i choose a darker value + a colour a couple hues down the colour wheel. using that, i draw the pupil and sort of a line around the middle that kinda makes it look like a pokeball. then i use the blur tool on that line, but not the pupil. sometimes i lower the opacity on that layer depending on how dark the colour is

i take an even darker colour and using a multiply layer, i redraw the pupil, and shade just a little bit of the very top of the iris. then i blur that top bit and lower the opacity to whatever looks nice

then with a luminosity layer, i take a colour lighter than the base colour and draw a lopsided curve at the bottom of the eye. then i blur just the inside of it, but erase the parts where it touches the pupil. and lower the opacity

another luminosity layer + an even lighter colour. i then make two lines on the side of the curve that’s shorter, then lower the opacity of that layer. i also take a separate luminosity layer and draw a little heart and some circles if the eye is big enough, then lower the opacity by a lot to create a bit of reflection in the eye

then i add the circle at, usually, the top left-ish part of the iris, and a small oval at the opposite side of that. after i’m done shading and stuff, i get to colour the lines and sometimes i take two lighter colours, and do lines on either side of the iris, with the lightest colour being the thinner line.

as for character design-- there are a lot of factors that go into that, but honestly i just go with what i feel Looks Good for the character, for the most part. 

i do consider a couple of character building things like: what is their personality like? what type of outfits would they choose to wear? how would these outfits show some part of who they are as a person? what colours fit them the most, and what colours go well together overall? what is their body language like? what is their body type? how can you use facial expression to show their personality? what physical traits would fit their character the most? (round face, short, small nose, big eyes = cute) (angular face, tall, pointed nose, narrowed eyes = intimidating) what skills/jobs do they have and how would that affect their appearance too? (a carpenter would have rough hands. a string musician would have callouses on their fingers. bodybuilder is bulky. gymnast is fit and flexible) 

though, a lot of those physical traits don’t have to match up with the personality ‘cause that’s the beauty of humanity being so varied and complicated! it’s okay to bend some of these “rules” and mix and match as you see fit; i tend to give my afab characters pointed chins, and amab characters rounded jaws, and that’s Usually seen as not-so-typical facial structures, but i do have characters that have different face shapes regardless of asab because that’s just how people are sometimes

with the way i draw ted and felix in my roleswap/displacedbias au, i tend to give ted curlier, wilder, messier hair. he’s more of a rebel than felix is, and more energetic, reckless, and willing to get his hands dirty-- hence the lack of formal attire in his usual outfit, and the bandaids. felix’s hair is straighter, and longer than ted’s, and his poses almost always have him in some “shy-looking” position and by default he looks worried/anxious, because that’s basically how his demeanor is. though the longer hair part is just bc of a headcanon i have. he’s in the process of growing his hair out.

another part of designing characters, is having a database to take inspiration from in the first place! such as pictures for all types of clothing and outfits, hairstyles, poses, etc. i hear pinterest is a good place for looking at those types of pictures, but i mostly use fashion/aesthetic blogs here on tumblr itself, or even a quick google image search is good for finding pictures and subsequently traits to implement onto your character. you can look at real life people, or fictional characters/other artists’ interpretations of fictional characters, or even take inspiration from yourself and people you know or see in your life (at least, before/after the quarantine), to design characters too!

Mmm yes the saturation is my friend. Friendly=round lines, so I need to do straight/edgy lines. I'm lov my chonk eyelashes haha. I may try sum blendy painty shading?? I noticed I like cell shades and shapes.

Also I scream about my same-pose syndrome. I have same-face syndrome too aaaaaa I need to somehow get past this comfort zone hnnn

These are such struggles for me. Especially drawing a character for the first time (which is like 90% of my art) because I want them to be readable and fun. I stay in my comfort zone at the cost of all my art looking the same. I know this and I hate it. I need to work on this

So Let me break it down:

Opposite of me=

-sharp thin lines

-blendy shading and diluted colors

-maybe a portrait or a profile angle? And not in-action. Maybe stiffer

-a serious face with smaller eyes.(with little/no eyelashes)

-normal hands ADFAFSLJK

-simple and sleek clothes

I think the total opposite of mine would just straight up be realistic but since I'm drawing a cartoon, I still will do a cartoon but I'm going to completely change the style of it and try to incorporate all these things!
