How gay relationships changed since The Sentinel was first aired and the first slash stories were written.

We talked about writing last night at the chat and what was the longest story we had written. For me it was Professor Sandburg, a two part story in an AU setting.

I started to reread a bit and suddenly became aware how times have changed since I had written it. When TS aired, gays had to stay in the closet if they lived an ordinary life. It was just actors-artists-flight attendent-arts dealer, and eccentrics etc. who were out. You needed either money, power or living in San Francisco or L.A. to be out and about.

It was already different in Europe, but in the US, especially in conservative jobs like police it was outright dangerous to be gay. Even Blair in academia could't afford it since gay teachers weren't tolerated.

And then there was AIDs which totally changed the sexual behaviour of people. Again. After the sexual revolution and Free Love and having sex as much as you can. The dark rooms in the back of gay clubs dissapeared.

Gay life was a really closed off subculture, with it's own rules and traditions. Many early writers were gay/bi themselves or were close to the community. Many writers, who weren't in, made an effort to write this world realistic to give it justice, researched, visitied clubs, talked to gay people.

Writers from Europe wrote an already a more modern view. In TS stories of today the anti-gay situation doesn't even come up anymore.

The old TS stories serve here as contemporary witnesses of a very conservative and oppressive world.

The slash writers and fans were in the closet too. You could loose your job and get into real trouble if someone found out.

Deeply bizarre question probably but is there anybody out there who watched The Sentinel, the 90s TV show, when it was airing — and remembers the music?

I was looking up some of the songs included in the episodes on the DVD box set and realized the song release dates were after the show stopped running but before the DVDs released, which tells me whatever was originally playing there was probably replaced for the DVD version and I’m desperately curious what was in the original.

Specifically, I’m after what was originally playing instead of “Believe” by Maggie McClure at the beginning of S2E21: Pennies from Heaven, and what was originally playing during Alex’s break-in scene in S3E23: Sentinel Too Part 1 instead of “Winter Tan” by Coyote & the Unicorn.

Happy New Year and all that. 2024 had its ups and downs especially health-wise but still, I'm doing better than many given my 'advancing' years. 😁

Fandom-wise I stuck with Supernatural, but I did manage to write a story for The Sentinel Secret Santa.

Otherwise I wrote a little bit for Supernatural, and between the two fandoms managed a grand total (sarcasm) of 5595 published words. Unfinished WIPs got me up to a not particularly grand total of 10,492 for 2024.

The year I do better is 2025, yes? AKA this year, yes?

All the best to anyone reading. 2025 is maybe not looking promising but here's to finding the good, the beautiful, and the fun things regardless.

it’s kind of surreal watching clips of the sentinel, like the show spawned an entire genre of fanfic that’s still having stuff produced now. It’s just interesting getting a better idea of what spawned the guide & sentinel au.

The Spanish dub is terrible, but it has some amazing moments like translating "neo hippie witch doctor punk" to "hechicero de mierda fantoche estúpido" which basically means "shitty sorcerer, you dress weird and you're stupid" and I think it's beautiful.

This is my first attempt at a video lipsync edit. It's hard to plan out! You don't know what clips will get recognized as a face and turn out good. Used an image singing as backup. And tried to stylize it like a music video. Its a bit rough around the edges, but I'm so excited this is possible! Want to do moar!
