Started re-reading The Savior’s Champion (by Jenna Moreci) today and WOW. I haven’t read this since I was like a sophomore in high school (which was like 5-6 years ago) and I knew it was good, but I forgot how good.

There’s so many little drops of foreshadowing and some excellent setup to distract from the truth. Not to mention the opening! WOW!

Today I got through the prologue and the first two chapters so I’m going to give my thoughts on it because it’s fun.

Prologue

Run.

Jenna does such an amazing job setting the tone. I feel the POV character’s panic. There’s a desperation to everything happening. And when it’s finally fulfilled it’s so slow and sad. You wanted Her to succeed. And She didn’t. After that there’s this just startling feeling, trying to piece together what happened and why against this bloody opening (in more ways than one.) It really sets the tone for the entire book.

Chapter One

I love Tobias, and this is where I think you really get to feel Jenna’s skill in delivering information to the reader naturally. You can so clearly picture the setting, the environment, how the buildings look, and its all subtle. There isn’t pages upon pages of details, it’s enough to tell you what things look like and lets you fill in around it. The world building is also natural and not shoved in unnaturally. Blessed Day and the build up to learning about The Savior and what Her deal is feels well executed. I don’t feel like I’m being info-dumped to. It’s well delivered context to flesh out everything the reader can infer up to that point.

You’re also introduced to Tobias’ family and their dynamic…and their struggle. They’re sweet and loving but there’s a tension there. A depression and struggle and hardship from being poor and Naomi’s disability. And underneath it all is the longing for his old life as an artist. This is where we’re introduced to The Plot.

The Savior’s Tournament. The tournament to win the hand of the newly 20-year-old Savior.

His mother discourages him, his sister doesn’t believe he’ll do it, even Tobias says he won’t and insists it’s stupid. And then his best friend, Milo, enters the scene. He takes Tobias away and starts talking about the tournament how they should enter and even if Tobias doesn’t. Tobias continues to insist it’s stupid until Milo brings up his weakness*. His family, wanting to provide for them, how the tournament would let him. And Tobias refuses to think about it, won’t let himself. Because he knows it’s his weakness too, that his want to help his family and to keep the comfortable and healthy could sway him.

When he returns home the temptation is doubled by his return home. Where his finds his sister struggling and in need of care and medicine. And he can do nothing. He goes to bed that night, his sister’s pain temporarily eased, reminding himself he will not enter the tournament.

Chapter Two

We’re back to Tobias’ character and motivation be doubled as he can’t get his sister’s medicine to easy her pain. This is due to the chance to enter the tournament and Milo convinces Tobias to wait with him. So they do and Milo brings Tobias’ want to care for his family. Milo’s dropped off and Tobias is told the chance to enter is open until sunset.

When he returns home his sister is suffering again. And he can do nothing. He repeats over and over and over that he won’t enter. And then he’s out the door.

He makes it just in time and the following scene is a little funny while keeping a sense of tension. He ensures his family will immediately receive money for his entry and waits. And he’s selected.

I absolutely adore this book, and now that I’m older and can better understand it I’m looking forward to continuing to read it. I’ll probably continue to post about it as I read the book, it’s a really good read. And hopefully my mild obsession will encourage more people to read it!!! It’s an excellent book.

always thinking abt that cap marvel Gustave Doré redraw variant. the exact tone (i.e. like his biblical/divine comedy works) aligns w what some of us mean by cm being reflective not of dcu magic world or just magic in general but of more spiritually mystic/divinity connotations. i just like that it’s kind of absurd but also so serious, which is very cm to me

This scene was so cute! Also, them in the garden when Leila tells him to choose a spot and he lays next to her and says "My spot is with you." 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Sorry for answering late! If you're looking for recs: Pandora Hearts is a dark fantasy manga that I love love love love to bits. If you ask me what's the best manga of all time, I will insist that this is it. It's very loosely based off of Alice in Wonderland and the story is dark and deceptive and so so so good!

The Savior's Champion is a novel by Jenna Moreci and it is one of the strongest romances I've read in a while (though that may just be because they actually, you know, became friends before they become lovers). I still can't get Tobias and my big man crush on him out of my mind, even months later.

Gwen and Art are Not in Love made me squeal. It's gays being disaster gays, its found family, its finding the courage to be yourself in a world which prevents you from doing so, it's great!

Magnus Archives is great as well! I've only read the first season though. It's an audio drama, but the sound effects of audio dramas freak me out, so I grabbed an epub of the transcripts from the lovely community and read it instead. :D I'm looking forward to reading season 2.

If you haven't read The Little Prince yet, what are you doing with your life? It's such a quick read and I was left sobbing, crying, thinking about stars and roses-
