Tonight's whumpril post: chapter one of "Of Balrogs and Other Setbacks", a further sequel to "Stranded" and "There and Back Again".

I don't have a full outline, but the first chapter is about 70% written. I should have everything else figured out by the time I post around 8pm my time (GMT -5).

I'm envisioning 3 chapters, and not sure if they'll post in succession or be broken up.

SANCTUARY TRIO!!!

After way too long, I have drawn my favorite group of sillies again. I even gave Shade and Aurora a bit of a design update! I decided Shade should just wear his hoodie all the time and I gave Aurora a sort of post apocalyptic outfit since it fits with. Ah. Where she came from. :) It was also SUPER fun to draw Aurora because I've never actually colored her on paper before! I considered giving her a haircut, but decided against it. She's back to her regular quill length. (If you look at the pictures of her for my Inktober 2022 stuff, you'll see that her hair got waaaay longer than it's supposed to be somehow. XD) I'll probably draw Aurora again so I can draw her new outfit in full. It was very fun to design!

AU Verse: A Better Life

One thing I say a lot is that I personally think staying in the Pride Lands his whole life was ultimately really bad for Scar. The main form of redemption that I know of is for him to spend time away from that, and then return with a broader sense of the world and his place in it.

So I designed that.

It started when he was an older cub on the cusp of becoming a teenager. The bitterness was setting in, and he had taken to long walks to try and keep the simmering frustrations at bay. One fateful day, he was so caught up in his thoughts that he wasn't paying full attention to where his paws were landing. One misstep had the stones come loose. His balance teetered to the side, and he tumbled down a steep slope. Something pulled in his lower back, and he couldn't move his rear legs. He was stuck, helpless.

Luckily, instead of vultures or other hungry opportunists, Tacari was found by a group of kind souls who brought him with them to help him recover.

Several months were spent outside of the Pride Lands, where Tacari was merely a stranger rather than a shadow. The living arrangements were temporary, as the plan was to help him return home once he was able to walk properly again. But in that time, Tacari's perspective of the world expanded.

For the first time, he saw that it was okay not to have a set purpose in life. Sometimes life was simply what you made of it, not what someone decreed it to be for you. Others would like you for being who you are, rather than who they want you to be. Not only that, it was okay if you didn't live up to another's expectations. It didn't make you "lesser". Simple lessons for many, but it was a strange topic for someone who had been decreed the "spare".

The season came and went, and Tacari's strength returned. He was able to return home and... To his surprise, his family were thrilled to see him. That had never happened before. It somehow proved that he was indeed cared about, even if he wasn't the first born.

As time passed, he began to realise that there was a possibility that he never wanted the throne at all. He only wanted others to see him and notice him. He could "prove his worth" in other ways. He was certainly capable of it.

Tacari was the one who spearheaded the campaign to allow the hyenas to return to the Pride Lands, citing that their punishment was too severe for an innocent generation. He would still take to his quiet days away from Pride Rock, but it was more to simply appreciate the land. Though he was anti-social, he did try and partake in various events. He wasn't pushing animals away, and was instead trying to be amicable.

Then, when Simba was born... He was still reluctant to be cubsitter, let's be honest here. But he was better at it, and he was willing to share stories. He was also known for straight up lying and encouraging Simba to ask his parents about utterly ridiculous topics. But there were never any plans to put the cub in harm's way.

Life is... What it probably should have been.

Patricia: I know you're an acquaintance of my friend, Sal. She told me about you... I know you don't come from our world but I still wanted to give you a sort of welcome gift, Lady Evergreen. Please take this piece of cloth as humble present of hospitality *bows*

Lady Evergreen had been examining the Sanctuary's interior, tilting her head towards various angles of the room like a curious bird. Her expression was rather unreadable and she chewed gently at the end of her glove. Now that she was here, the Lady had seemed to have deflated into a state of defeat, and ultimately, boredom.

But by some instinct, the other's approach had immediately livened her expression. "Oh!" The Lady spun around to receive her and the token, her shiny tusks flashing with a grin. "How generous! Thank you." She folded the cloth neatly. Although she couldn't feel the quality of material through her gloves, it was a kind enough offer. Such gifts were so commonplace at home, she hardly had to consider the response. Evergreen inspected the android by a long, sort of enigmatic look from behind her dark blue spectacles. There was a slight worry in her mind, that her more enthusiastic impression might scare the mild-mannered android away. She seemed quite unlike Sal. She spoke so quietly, the dendie practically had to lean in to listen. "A friend of Sal? I am assuming it was only good things, of course. Only good things," the Lady half-chuckled, "I suppose I need no introduction then. But what is your name, friend of Sal?"

What would Peter be in prison for in the sanctuary snippet?

I was going to say, "Attempted murder," then I realized since Voldemort was non-existent, that backstory would be a bit different, LMAO.

With some thinking, I just realized that without the Voldemort Civil War that happened during the Marauders Era, it would take a long time for the marauders themselves to mature and grow up. I think it would take a really shocking thing to make them wake up that their pranks have gone so far round to cruelty already.

The Sanctuary Kids absolutely dislike them, because no matter how they talked to them individually, united, each of them made the other worse.

I think, and I say this as a personal headcanon, that the first to mature was James, simply because he really loved Lily and he wanted to be a better person for her. He listened to her arguments and took a deep look at himself and realized that he didn't like himself and what he'd become.

Sirius got really angry when James changed, and they argued long and hard about it. The last straw was Remus finally chiming in and saying, "That he's somewhat ashamed of what they do at school because he can't tell his mother about it."

Sirius, who actually loved Remus's mom, flinched like he got slapped. While the Potters took care of Sirius when he ran away from home, it was Mrs. Lupin who wrote him long letters of advice, coming from someone who ran away from home herself.

Peter was different, because he actually enjoyed being cruel and a bully intentionally. His thinking was, if I am mean to them first, they can't hurt me. He drifted away from the group when they grew up, and fell in with a bad crowd. Not quite death eaters, because it would be very difficult for that kind of group to recruit in Hogwarts where the Sanctuary kids are.

I think he gets arrested for muggle baiting. Remember, the Sanctuary-verse I wrote had this kind of problem. Mostly because of the Voldemort Ripple Effect. (I can write a lot more about that if y'all want to know.)

It's not technically illegal, only if you get caught. He got caught and arrested.

2025 is going to be a big year for me. I'm getting my small biz house in order between redoing my website and reworking how I keep track of my finances. Oh yeah, and I'm releasing 5 books!

Odyssey had gotten to run around the lab unaccompanied as Stargazer was busy with Colossus or something, they honestly hadn't paid that much attention. Either way, it was getting rather dark now and it seemed like Sal had some sort of plan for nighttime.

Which is how they found themselves being tucked in, they looked up at Sal curiously, the digital display on their eyes animated a blink to show this.

"Am I susposed to sleep now? I don't really have that function programed, but I could turn off my eye lights and it would look like sleep. Hey what is sleeping like? Do you know?" They ask from under the blanket, while they held a multiverse worth of knowledge they really lacked in experiences.

"get in here." From Rebecca.

Her eyes are red from crying and her face is distraught.

Wordlessly she crosses the threshold into Rebecca's house and scoops the younger woman into a strong hug, burying her face in her neck.

"Thank you..." she whispers through silent sobs. "I didn't know where else to go."

daryl's hand wipes across his nose and mouth, smearing bright blood over his skin. it's not often that someone gets this good of a hit on him. the aftermath leaves him irritated, sparks flying in his belly and threatening to set his insides on fire.

did you punch 'em back? @deathmarked asks, earning himself a cutting glance from daryl. rick's accusatory sarcasm is not appreciated, and it does nothing to calm the fire that's about to be roaring up his throat.

‘ that son of a bitch started it. ’ and he's ended it, daryl thinks to himself, with a sucker punch so devastating it knocked the guy clean to the ground. he spits off to the side, a red splatter hitting the asphalt.

We live in a peculiar, in-between era, in which movie studios and other content creation concerns have yet to figure out exactly how things will shake down for them in the new world order of ubiquitous streaming platforms.

As ever, Hollywood is throwing money at things and peering through their fingers to see if any of it still works like it used to before the covid year. To that end, this summer promises to be an acid-test, as it were, of different cinematic options, from the superhero epic ("The Flash"), and the action-tentpole ("Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part 1"), to the return of the raunchy comedy ("No Hard Feelings").

Whether any of this works is anyone's guess -- though things are decidedly not looking good for "The Flash" at least, so far -- and I can well understand why Hollywood is quaking in its collective designer boots at the prospect of not luring all those movie audiences back to the cineplex.

Still, the state of cinema at large, even in these confusing, off-kilter times, remains eternally viable. In the past six months, there have been a myriad of powerful releases (albeit less so from the big studios), the best of which propel the art form forward, as they prove, over and over again, the potency of the form. Here are the 10 best films I have seen so far in 2023. Many of these will be seen again in my final list at the end of the year, but who knows what will come next?
