Welcome back to me struggling not to weep over River Song because im reading The Ruby's Curse (by Alex Kingston)!

I've finally finished Ruby's Curse and it's actually even more insane to me that Ruby isn't River's daughter. In the book, River enters what she thinks is an offshoot of the Land of Fiction, entering the Melody Malone book. Upon leaving, Melody temporarily becomes a real person. At the same time, River almost becomes a deity with unlimited power due to the Eye of Horus. Melody merges with her and dies and the end of the book has Melody say "And I've got a Song in my heart."

It accidentally lines up pretty well with the current season having all this god stuff going on.

rereading The Ruby's Curse (when I definitely should be studying for exams) and River isn't a proto-Time Lord or a facsimile of a Time Lord, she's a secret, infinitely better third thing – the Child of Time (which is waaay better and cooler than some mere stuffy Time Lord imho)

space babies follows one of my favourite doctor who tropes: the bad guy of the episode isn’t a conscious villain at all, but a well-meaning robot or AI gone wrong with good intentions. the chula nanogenes turning everybody into gas mask zombies because they aren’t attuned to human dna and base their “healing” mechanism on the first wounded boy they encounter. repair droids gone rogue on a stranded ship chasing the brain of a 18th century french noblewoman because they’re programmed to think she’s the final piece of the puzzle. the ‘siren’ of the black spot ‘abducting’ pirates into her sickbay to cure them whereas they assume her to be monstrous.

and now — an education software system conjuring up a literal bogeyman to entertain a bunch of abandoned babies because it lost control in the absence of maintenance and wants to care for the kids as best it knows how. nobody’s to blame, nobody’s “evil”. chefs kiss.
