Apex Legends - Season 8: Mayhem
Season Release Date: February 2nd, 2021 Platforms: Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The game is set in the same science fiction universe as Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall series, with several characters from the Titanfall series appearing either as minor characters or playable Legends. Before a match, players form into two- or three-player squads, and select from pre-designed characters with distinctive abilities, known as "Legends". In "Battle Royale", up to 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos land on an island and search for weapons and supplies before attempting to defeat all other players in combat. The available play area on the island shrinks over time, forcing players to keep moving or else find themselves outside the play area which can be fatal. The final team alive wins the round.
I was privileged to join the revered Respawn Entertainment Apex development team mid way through 2020 as a gameplay generalist that spent time prototyping and pitching new weapon and legends ideas. This allowed me to grow my design skills in other areas of the discipline and learn from leading industry creators!
As scope and season requirements where laid out for the Season 8: Mayhem deliverables, I was asked to further stretch both my design and technical skills by developing new game mode modifiers for the Season's events. This work included pitching, prototyping and rapidly playtesting new ways to shake up the Battle Royale formula - nothing was off the table. Numerous game modes were prototyped, tested and iterated on. We ended up landing on 5 solid ideas that were each unique in which parts of the game that they changed or altered. They each were a huge hit with players and the internal dev team alike; creating fun and engaging new ways to the play "Battle Royale".
These game modes launched at the end of the season 8 under the War Games Event! Each game mode breathed fresh life into the standard "Battle Royale" experience, promoting new strategies and squad tactics for players to explore. Each game mode was only live for 2-3 days over the course of 2 weeks, shaking things up for players and paying homage to the season's theme. Check out the War Games Event Trailer below!
youtube
Here are the 5 Game Modes and their mechanics:
Second Chance
In this modifier, each Legend is granted one free respawn per match. Once a Legend is killed, their Respawn Token is consumed as they rise again from their current location retaining all their weapons and gear. After a short duration, the player respawns high in the air to skydive back into the action.
Ultra Zones
Shake up your ideal drop strategy with Ultra Zones! Ultra Zones introduce the concept of multiple Hot Zones within a single map. More epic loot, more gold items! But wait, there’s more! Each Hot Zone is enveloped in a Flash Point—a returning feature from a Season 6 LTM. For those who don’t already know, Flash Points are enormous, glowing bubbles that replenish your HP and shields when you stand in them.
Auto Banners
In this modifier we’ve made a rather small but spicy change to squadmate respawning. Your Squadmates Banner Cards are automatically retrieved! No need to loot their death box to retrieve their Banner Cards, just head straight to a respawn beacon. The loot pool has been altered to contain more Mobile Respawn Beacons too.
Killing Time
Feel the pressure with Killing Time. This event speeds up the match as Legends fall. During a round, whenever a Legend dies, the round time is reduced. If any given round is a massacre, you can bet that ring will be closing real quick! Keep an eye on the round timer and the ring in this modifier.
Armor Regen
Your armor regenerates over time at a rate of 12 points per second. Whenever you take damage, your armor will begin regenerating after an 8-second delay. This delay is doubled to 16 seconds if your armor gets cracked (reaches zero). One last thing for this mode: there are no Shield Cells in the loot pool!
Below is some footage of a prominent APEX Streamer playing the Second Chance game mode. Enjoy the chaos!

What I'm Watching - Spring 2022
This season is loaded with originals and sequels and I couldn't be more stoked. Here's a list of everything I'll be checking out as well as my first impressions on many of the new series including some of the lesser known ones that I'll give a go. My big 3 for this season are going to be:
SpyxFamily The new Shueisha series that I've been following since the manga debut! I'm so stoked to see it hit the screens and the anime adaptation looks absolutely stunning! Must Watch
Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-San I haven't read the manga for this but i'll be damned if I don't want to start it now, even after just watching the trailer I'm sold. She'll easily be the best girl of the season and I can't wait to watch the series to see where it goes.
Rising of Shield Hero - Season 2 This was honestly one of my favourite Isekai's purely because of the injustice in the first half of the series that left me fuming. I've never felt so passionately about how a character was being treated wrongly and overlooking all the lolis I'm stoked to see how this story continues. Lots more below the cut:
Komi-San can't Communicate - Season 2 I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 and will 100% be watching this sequel.
Summer Time Rendering A surprise - this is a Disney+ anime ? The story genuinely looks intriguing and the animations - of course with disney budgets - looks great. I think this will also be worth a watch and likely the underdog of the season. The main downside I see is the challenge of watching it in the first place since it's one of the first series I've seen on Disney and I know they're extremely strict on their distribution of series across platforms.
Isekai Anime: Skeleton Knight in Another World This is a refreshingly simple isekai that I'm looking forward to watching. I feel that so many of them are trying to put a spin on things but this show really just gets to the point and embraces the isekai aspect of the story. Looking forward to the rest of the season. Otome Game Sekai wa Mob ni Kibishii Sekai desu/ (Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs) I like the base concept of the series. I doubt it'll be actually considered "good" but I'll likely throw it in as a personal choice. Based on the first episode - I think I'll thoroughly enjoy the mc's nihilism and general hatred. Kinda satisfying to watch him rightfully get angry at shit characters. Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road/ The Executioner and her way of Life From the first episode this looks like it'll be worth a watch, it genuinely looks different from other isekais and the concept is great. Paripi Koumei/ Ya Boy Kongming This is hilarious. I think I'll keep watching this purely for the entertainment. But of course - the animations are well done. Yuusha, Yameru/ I'm Quitting Heroing Frankly I don't know how we haven't seen this plot already but here it is. I'll give this 3 episodes but I don't have high hopes. The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody This is an easy skip for me. Concept is something we've seen before and the animations are the standard isekai special. Sports Anime: Aoashi oh boy - looks like this year will be the year of soccer animes. Out of all the times this could be released I think it's crazy that they decided to do it the same year that Blue Lock is set to air. Based off episode 1 I actually have high hopes for this series, it has the hollywood small town kid tries to go big which isn't seen in a lot of Japanese media and it looks like it'll do really well in this story. Should be worth a watch! Birdie Wing An actual all female golf anime. I have no idea what to expect. Love All Play I feel that this is shit timing, i'll be skipping this one as I've had my share of badminton animes for the year. Fanfare of Adolescence High-key skipping this one because I can't stand the way horses look in anime, especially when most of the animations for this series during the actual sport will be cgi. Tomodachi Game It seems like a decent amount of people are interested in this series, possibly since it's the first horror show in a while. Frankly I don't think it looks appealing and after the first episode there's so many cliches. I'll likely watch it through but I'm not a fan as of right now. Dance Dance Danseur Up until now I've never heard of this series but if it's a project that MAPPA decided to take on, I'll be more than happy to check it out. The style looks kinda funky but I think it'll be interesting regardless. Aharen-san wa Hakarenai I feel like we've seen this show already... I guess this style of series has become popular and I don't really get it.... it's not just the style.. the story is also just.. Komi san but slightly different. If you just sweep all the red flags under a rug it seems like it'll be a very wholesome show but if this turns out to be a romance or in anyway gets more uncomfortable than it already is I will be yeeting this show with no questions.

Manga & Anime I've Binged This Month: July 2021
Anime:
(7/12) My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!: GAY AF BUT JUST UNDER THE RADAR ENOUGH TO SLIDE BY THE CENSORS?????? JESUS. A dumbass dense as a brick mf isekais herself into being the villain character in an otome (dating sim) game where the villain always dies/is exiled. To counter that, she changes EVERYTHING. And it's FANTASTIC. I watched the dub, which has its moments of meh, but otherwise suits it great. The story made me laugh and gasp and kept being fresh and surprising and of course it's based off a Light Novel like so many good new isekais are nowadays. Reverse Harem style but some of the "harem" characters are GIRLS. Yeah, and she even gets CONFESSED TO AND KABEDONED (wall slammed) BY OTHER GIRLS. Yeah. I love this show. 10/10, enjoy yourselves.
(7/13) If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord: Add this to the list of "little girl child is adopted by an older male figure into a healthy father-daughter bonding experience and is honestly really cute and sweet but always has a tragic backstory" list! Little demon girl is found in the woods by an adventurer and of course he takes her in after some back and forth. He's 100% Maes Hughes here with 1000% less death! It's so cute! It gets kinda weird towards the end tho, very "I'm gonna marry the man who took me in and raised me" vibes which is, imo, very bad. I HOPE it doesn't fall into that trap but, c'est la vie. Overall, kinda boring, but the dub let me finish making a crochet tank top I've been ignoring so it gets a score boost. 8.5/10.
(7/15) That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Dub): Heads up, the Sub is on the Crunchyroll but the Dub is on Funimation but I have both so I get to watch both! Season 2 (part 2) is just now being released due to Covid so I'm happy to watch the series again. I'm actually really pleased by the Dub, the Sub was so good I thought it wouldn't compare but nope! Still good! What got me into the Isekai genre tbh. 10/10 I bought the Light Novels lmao save me
(7/17) Ace Attorney: Is Miles Edgeworth Does Gay? I own the anniversary edition of the games and haven't played more than a few hours so I binged the anime and now I'm 10 levels of Miles/Phoenix hell. Gay as shit. Funny, ngl, but I'm now obsessed with the fact that Japan's court system is corrupt as hell, I say OBJECTION in my daily life, and I found out the San Francisco Newspaper agrees with me. Life is wild sometimes. 8.5/10
(7/18) Beastars (S2): I watched the first season years ago ironically and then ended up really liking it. Story of my life. S2 came out the day of and I binged it with my younger bro and loved it AGAIN. Like... dude. 9/10 because honestly? Im gonna be recovering from the consensual leg mauling. CONSENSUAL. MAULING.
(7/26) Saga of Tanya the Evil: Set in a fantasy WWI, this Isekai features a capitalist who spoke to god and said "I'm an atheist" to which god said "Fuck you in particular". You love to hate Tanya and at some point it kinda clicks that although this character IS a sadist, mean, in no way nice and kinda evil, you start seeing the moments where they're very human start click into place. It's fascinating seeing this as almost a character study of Lawful Evil characters, but I think of this more as a palate cleanser for more Good Guys later in your media consumption. Just never read the comments that are with the series because you will regret it. 9/10.
(7/27) The Rising of the Shield Hero: I'm gonna be real if you're the type to get hung up on if things are too problematic to enjoy you'll probably not enjoy this. I'm not knocking people for doing so, just that the MC here LITERALLY has two slaves, he bought from a slaver, whom is not shown as an evil character in the series. And for some godforsaken reason the one time the slaves are released is framed as a bad thing????? I can't get over this tbh. I hate to admit this is one of the most fascinating and interesting and honestly fresh feeling isekai/anime I've seen in a hot minute. But it's got SLAVERY. It's whack. I can't wait for season 2. 9/10.

Discord Discussion: Rising of the Shield Hero - It’s not a game, but it feels like it...
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
Two years ago I wrote a long post about the reasons why I liked Rising of The Shield Hero despite the controversy of it at the time. It is still is one of my favorite series to date, and I was recently rewatching it after some friends and myself started to debate the workings of the weapons and magic to hype ourselves up for Season 2 (which is set to release sometime in the next year--we hope).
In my previous analysis/review, I discussed storytelling and what I loved about the different heroes’ journeys that we see from over Naofumi’s shoulder. I tried to focused in on the clear difference between Naofumi--who sees this new world as his reality--and the other heroes who largely continue to see it as a game. Even when the others say that they realize it is no longer a game, we can see by their actions that this is not as deeply felt or understood by their actions as time goes on.
In my rewatch, I noticed this scene from Episode 11, “Catastrophe Returns” where we actually see the world the way Naofumi does during a battle and, potentially, outside it:
It’s not the first time we see these additional icons added to a character’s vision. We get a similar moment when the King (now Trash) tells them that the weapons cannot work together. We see it also when Naofumi adds items to his shield, thus creating the skill tree and also when Naofumi interacts with certain objects (like, mining with Raphtalia early on and seeing a little arrow over what he is mining or when he tries to pick up another weapon and is alerted that it can’t be used).
With this in mind, this is likely the same way that others heroes see the world. Strike that--it’s exactly the same as later in that same episode we see Ren’s field of vision displayed:
If everything in your vision suddenly went through a game-like interfacing filter--wouldn’t you also feel like you are in a game?

What to Expect from Season 2 of the Rising of the Shield Hero?
As the fans have been anticipating for a while, the new season of The Rising of the Shield Hero will soon be released after a long wait. The premier is scheduled for air in 2021. It is expected that the show will introduce new characters while the protagonist will go for new adventures outside of the kingdom that they know. The second season of the Rising of the Shield Hero is expected to come with many new surprises.
The existence of the realms outside the kingdom that Naofumi and the fact that the rest of the heroes were transported has been kept secret from them. All these countries are also facing The Waves of Calamity and are yet to receive any aid. Naofumi’s decision to leave the country was made clear by the end of season 1. After the church was overthrown, the Queen took her place, and it appears that things will only get better for the kingdom now. So, it’s the ideal time for the heroes to go and help elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see and understand other nations’ cultures that exist outside of the kingdom. Their political structures and societies remain a mystery, and the upcoming season will finally shed light on it. It would also be interesting to see how people of these nations think about the heroes. The heroes will have to quickly adapt to new cultures and understand and respect them in order to work with them.
The hero’s world is primarily plagued by the Waves, and it has been the main issue they have been dealing with. Since the viewers have already been made aware that this is something that persists everywhere, the heroes will have a chance to know how other nations deal with them. There is also a possibility that the team might find new characters that would like to work with them. One thing is certain, how The Waves are dealt with will be the primary issue at hand in the upcoming season as well.
Since the heroes will be traveling to new places, it will also open them to new opportunities. They might find a new ally who can help them power up. Raphtalia, Filo, and Naofumi have already made a lot of progress in Season one of the show. Raphtalia had worked consistently on upgrading her gear and new techniques, which gave her an edge over other characters. She also confronted her past bravely as she grew emotionally and learned to deal with negative memories. So, it’s natural to expect the trio to continue getting better in the upcoming season. However, this time there will be more side characters that might bring new challenges and opportunities.
As far as the premiere date of the show is concerned, the fans are still waiting for official announcements. But the upcoming season will undoubtedly have mind-blowing music, unseen adventures, and a lot of challenges. The characters will have to be brave and confront them with confidence in order to grow.

On July 7, 2021, it was announced that the second season would be delayed.“Due to various reasons, we have decided to postpone the broadcast of The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2, which was scheduled to start broadcasting in October 2021,” stated the official website. “We are currently planning to start broadcasting in April 2022, so when the detailed date and time is decided we will announce it on the official website.”Kinema Citrus is known for only producing a handful of projects per year (unless they’re co-animating with another company). The Made In Abyss anime was their breakout hit in 2017 and then for 2020 they released Made in Abyss the Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul. It’s also been confirmed that the Made In Abyss Season 2 release date is in 2022, as well.Such a schedule pushed The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 out into 2022. Besides Shield Hero Season 3, the only other project they’ve produced was the Show by Rock!! Stars!!, which came out in January 2021.Therefore, the best-case scenario was Shield Hero Season 2 coming out in April 2022. Since Kadokawa producer Tamura is already promising anime fans they won’t have a long wait between seasons it’s possible The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 3 release date could be scheduled for late 2022.The Rising Of The Shield Hero manga, light novels, and web novel compared to the Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari animeJokingly referred to as Medicine And Raccoon in the likeness of Spice And Wolf, The Rising Of The Shield Hero light novels were created by author Aneko Yusagi and illustrator Minami Seira starting in August 2013.The story is based on a Shosetsuka ni Naro (Let’s Become a Novelist) web novel that reached an ending years ago. Fan-made English translation projects for the web novel were completed back in 2015.The official Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari light novel series was up to Volume 22 as of June 25, 2019.The release date for Volume 23 has not yet been confirmed. The author is working on multiple projects at the same time so the next book is taking longer than usual. The official English translation by One Peace Books started publishing in 2015. The English version is already up to Volume 20 as of June 22, 2021. Volume 21 is scheduled to release on October 26, 2021, and Volume 22 on December 21, 2021.This year is the year of the second season of the anime The Rising of the Shield Hero! Nice to meet you! Pic credit: Liberation ZoneThere are numerous differences between the web novel and light novels, but overall it’s safe to say the light novel series is taking the plot in a different direction. For example, the fan-favorite Mad Scientist Naofumi story arc was replaced by a different story in the light novels. The light novels also added new characters and made major changes to the story while keeping the core elements of the plot relatively intact. However, similar to how the Overlord light novels eventually drifted away from the original web novel, it’s very likely that the Shield Hero light novels will find a new ending. (The web novel’s ending was also fairly open-ended and the final chapters were more of a side story.)The big divergences start at around the Cal Mira Island story arc in Volume 4 (which is also the ending of the anime’s first season). It’s apparent that underdeveloped portions of the story are being fleshed out from that point on so later developments make more sense.Overall, even fans of the web novel agree the light novel adaptation is more streamlined and more appealing to a wider audience. The biggest difference is probably in the tone of the narrative, which (similar to the Sword Art Online light novels) comes from the first person perspective of Naofumi Iwatani.Web novel Naofumi is extremely bitter (perhaps realistically so?) in all his interactions with other characters whereas light novel Naofumi is significantly more mellowed out. That’s not to say he’s no longer angry at the world due to all the trauma he’s experienced. The manga covers for Volumes 1 and 12. Pic credit: Aiya KyuStarting in 2014, mangaka Aiya Kyu began adapting the light novel series into The Rising Of The Shield Hero manga. Published on a monthly basis, the manga has been collected into 18 volumes as of March 2021 (two to three volumes release per year). Please see our exclusive interview with Shield Hero manga artist Aiya-san.The English translation of the Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari manga is already up to Volume 15 as of March 16, 2021. Volume 16 is scheduled for September 28, 2021The manga version follows the light novels’ plot, but it has a tendency to skip slice-of-life elements in order to jump straight into the action. This decision makes the manga more fast-paced since it skims the bland plot points, but it makes these changes at the expense of characterization. The art style of the light novel series translated well into the anime. Pic credit: Minami SeiraWhen light novels are adapted into anime format it’s unavoidable that some content is skipped and some parts are condensed. The changes were most notable in Episode 1, which ran double-length so the first episode didn’t end on such a dark note.Tamura says that in this case anime studio Kinema Citrus worked as a team to make these types of decisions.“We do make some adjustments for marketability, however never at the cost of changing too much the original story. … We would like to not change too much of the original story, but there are things we must cut due to episode duration,” he explained. “In the case we do have to cut content, it is a decision all the staff members are involved in.”In the first light novel, everything seemed to be going well and then it suddenly hit a switch. The anime made this transition a little more seamlessly by adding a few extra scenes of friendly interaction with the other three heroes (Spear Hero Motoyasu Kitamura, Sword Hero Ren Amaki, and Bow Hero Kizuna Kazeyama) which included subtle foreshadowing that makes the audience realize that’s something is not quite right. The anime also presented a good-hearted protagonist who was excited about his upcoming adventure whereas narrator Naofumi of the books was more biting. These anime scenes made the eventual betrayal of Naofumi seem more believable while also making the character more likable.Voice actor Kaito Ishikawa plays the role of Naofumi and he explained how it was necessary to put himself into a “more positive mindset through it all” when recording the first episode because he knew the betrayal was coming.“I raised my spirits by imagining a story where Naofumi may be the hero of the shield, considered the weakest of the four, but he was going to give it his all and keep upgrading his shield in order to protect his party, and stuff like that,” he said. “The story and Naofumi’s character take quite the turn in the second half, so I was quite a bit nervous going in. Part of it was because episode 1 is an hour long and had an unusual kind of schedule. We recorded the first half on one day, and the second the next. The second day’s recording was going to start with the betrayal scene right off the bat, so I had to get into [a] mindset of voicing a whole different character. Repeating that process all over again was quite the challenge.”When voicing Naofumi, Kaito also believes that if “Naofumi’s nice to someone, it’s not intentional. He’s not aware that he’s showing his soft side.”Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 3 shocked everyone by being announced at the same time as The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2. Pic credit: Zhao-PThe goal is for audiences to see a glimpse into Naofumi’s true character while still not adopting a “more compassionate tone to how he treats Raphtalia.”“Naofumi only sees Raphtalia as a weapon, as his sword and nothing more. But try as he might, he can’t fully commit to treating a person as a tool. He must’ve been a really nice guy,” Kaito explained. “While he hates the other heroes and Myne, and seeks revenge from the bottom of his heart, he still can’t bring himself to become completely evil. That’s what makes him so human and charming.”The anime did neglect to include information that changes how audiences might perceive the characters at the beginning. For example, while Naofumi was transported to this fantasy world by reading a book, the other three heroes all died in accidents before awakening to their new fate.Worse, the anime’s opening portrayed Naofumi in a bad light. When he sees the picture of the princess in the book he describes her as “kind of slutty” based on appearance alone. However, in the light novel, Naofumi made this remark because the picture book page described how the princess made eyes at all the heroes and was known for sleeping around.Since the anime neglected to include this critical context from the book it changes the way audiences might feel about Naofumi from the outset.Still, the anime did a good job of showing how the strong pre-existing prejudices of King Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, the church, and the citizenry against any person who might wield the Shield allowed Princess Malty Melromarc to frame Naofumi.Malty’s actions are the root cause of Naofumi’s original personality snapping, twisting him into a dark and cynical man willing to use slaves to build his party. While it’s difficult to like the bitter book narrator Naofumi, the character presented in the anime’s first few episodes is shown to have goodness still inside him despite the horrible circumstances. The book has a lot of interior monologue showing how Naofumi views the world and this rage was most evident in Episode 8: Curse Shield. But it still had Naofumi smiling in the end.The Rising Of The Shield Hero anime adapts a light novel series by Kadokawa that’s based on a web novel. Pic credit: Kinema CitrusHow many light novel volumes will the 25 episodes of Season 1 adapt? The first light novel volume was adapted into four episodes, and Episode 8 finished off the final Chapter 20 of Volume 2. Episodes 10 through 13 adapted light novel Volume 3.Starting with Episode 14 the anime slowed the pacing down dramatically. Eight episodes were used to adapt the Devil of the Shield story arc that’s the focus of Volume 4. The ending of this story arc also corresponded to manga Chapter 32 of Volume 8.Warning: Major anime spoilers in the next several paragraphs.Shield Hero Episode 21 actually had some manga fans complaining. While, yes, Naofumi finally received sweet, sweet justice, the anime episode failed to compare with its manga counterpart. The manga’s scene was way more confrontational in nature and the characterization of Naofumi was completely changed. (The manga version of Spear Hero also didn’t give up completely on Malty even to the bitter end, which made it seem odd how Bitch remained in his party without any explanation by the anime.)Malty even attempted to manipulate Naofumi by suggesting that he should forgive them.“Please don’t make this about revenge!” Malty pleaded “Revenge only begets revenge. As the wise Shield Hero, surely you know that! Please, show mercy and ask the Queen to forgive us! As long as you feel better, everything is fine, right?!”In the face of selfish pleading for mercy, all Naofumi could think of was revenge. Pic credit: Aiya KyuIn response to this outrageous line, manga Naofumi immediately ordered the execution of Bitch and Trash by yelling, “Kill them! The death penalty!” Seeking to prevent strife in the country, the Queen offered the middle ground proposal where the two former royals would still prefer death, but she later point-blank stated, “Upon their next transgression, I won’t hesitate to put them down.”The end result was that anime Naofumi came off as far more mellow in how he reacted to the situation. Instead of being hot-blooded and petty by reveling in watching the horrible faces Bitch was making, this kind-hearted version of Naofumi forged a selfless path for the betterment of the kingdom that unified everyone behind a common cause. So while, yes, the anime portrays Naofumi in a more heroic manner it could be argued that the emotional payoff for the readers was far greater in the manga. After that story arc, the first season resumed the earlier pacing to finish off the first five volumes. The ending focused on the Cal Mira Island story arc and the fight with L’Arc Berg, Therese Alexandrite, and Glass, which had been teased by the OP video of the second cour. (Trivia: Melty was not present in either the light novel or web novel during this time frame, but in the anime, she helped with the wave sea battle.Rishia Ivyred’s quick thinking with the luchol berry barrels may have made her the MVP of The Rising Of The Shield Hero Episode 25, but in the manga version’s story, she was seriously wearing a squirrel suit so no one knew who she was. The reason for her suicidal despair at the hands of the Bow Hero was also developed over the course of multiple manga chapters (and the first half of light novel Volume 6) whereas the anime quickly skimmed over the highlights. Pic credit: Aiya KyuSeason 1’s ending roughly corresponded to the finale of Volume 5 (or manga Chapter 45), which is a good stopping point since a major new story arc that spans multiple books begins with the fifth volume. However, the anime’s ending quickly adapted Rishia’s introduction from Volume 6 already, skimming over most of the details, and even changing the spelling of her name to Lecia. The happy ending where Naofumi received a lordship over a domain and rebuilt Raphtalia’s village also seemed to skip way ahead to light novel Volume 10, which should have been a plot point for Shield Hero Season 3.Shield Hero Season 2 will pick up again with Volume 6 (manga Volume 12) with a story about a Spirit Tortoise that directly leads to a confrontation with a major villain (see the Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2 spoilers below for more detail).Did The Rising Of The Shield Hero anime really just troll fans by showing Naofumi and Raphtalia kissing? Pic credit: Kinema CitrusThe good news is that this stopping point leaves plenty of room for producing Season 2 immediately, never mind The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 3 and beyond. Better yet, English-reading fans can jump straight in and read ahead of the anime without waiting for new books to release. The only bad news is that Shield Hero Episode 25 has already adapted most of the available chapters for The Rising Of The Shield Hero manga. Thus, it’s very likely that Shield Hero Season 2 will be ahead of the manga version in 2022.Since Shield Hero Season 2 only has 13 episodes rather than being two cours, the third season essentially is like a split-cour anime season despite being numbered separately.Similar to how the first season needed two cours to find a good stopping point in the story, the next even volumes have two major self-contained story arcs. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4 should then adapt the next major story arc that begins with Volume 14.The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 spoilers (plot summary/synopsis)Note: This article assumes that Shield Hero Season 2 will open with the events of light novel Volume 6 or manga Volume 12.The last time we saw Naofumi, Raphtalia, and friends they’d just faced off against Glass in the Cal Mira islands. Returning to Melromarc aboard a ship, they meet a young woman named Rishia (Lecia) Ivyred, a tragic character introduced at the ending of Season 1. She was abandoned by Bow Hero Itsuki so she begs to join Naofumi’s party.(In the manga, Rishia/Lecia enjoyed wearing full-body suits like the squirrel costume, so it’ll be interesting to see if the anime shows her wearing her penguin costume.)Besides Rishia/Lecia, Raphtalia’s childhood friend the Siberian Husky-like Keel joins the party. There’s a bit of a plot twist involving Keel’s identity, but this article won’t spoil the surprise.Another big new character introduction is for a female knight named Eclair Seaetto and an “old hag” named Elrasla Grilaroc. The Queen of Melromarc calls in both to act as combat instructors for the four heroes, with Eclair teaching swordsmanship and Elrasla teaching a martial arts fighting style called the phantasmagoric peerless style. Elrasla was actually introduced in the first anime season since she one of the people that Naofumi rescued from sickness and she also made a brief cameo in Raphtalia’s hometown at the ending of Episode 25, but in Season 2 she’ll take on a more important role. Pic credit: Aiya KyuThe focal point of Shield Hero Season 2 starts with Naofumi deliberating over what it means to be a hero. He’s moved past needing petty revenge and Raphtalia continues to serve as a moral compass. There’s also the mystery of the Seven Star Heroes. It’s not long before trouble starts brewing because the heroes are asked to defeat a giant monster called the Spirit Tortoise. But this creature is so powerful that even the high-level adventurers cannot defeat it.The problem is that the other three summoned heroes Ren, Itsuki, and Motoyasu keep treating their situation as if they’re living inside a virtual reality game. It turns out Naofumi is the only one of the four cardinal heroes to not have played a game similar to this fantasy world. As such, Naofumi takes threats more seriously and trains hard while the other three act as if they’re game protagonists with plot armor who simply can’t ever lose and die (clearly they’re not familiar with Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash).Unfortunately, although Naofumi attempts to train with the other heroes the way he humiliates and berates them causes the Bow Hero, Sword Hero, and Spear Hero to become alienated even further from the Shield Hero. In the past there was some grumbling about Naofumi’s methods, but now they outright accuse Naofumi of “cheating” as if he’s somehow manipulating the game-like world in an unfair manner.Due to this conflict, Naofumi’s party finds itself standing alone in the face of the enormous threat posed by the Spirit Tortoise. This is quite the problem since Naofumi clearly remembers the warning from Fitoria the Filolial Queen that the world won’t be saved if the four heroes can’t work together. The beginning of The Rising Of The Shield Hero Season 2 will be based on light novel Volume 6. Pic credit: Minami SeiraAfter Naofumi and his friends defeat the Spirit Tortoise, they set out to search for the other missing heroes. Along the way, they run into Ost Hourai, a brown-haired woman with Chinese-looking features.Ost claims the Spirit Tortoise is still alive and pleads with Naofumi to find and stop the creature before it goes on a rampage. Naofumi doesn’t believe her since he had defeated the Spirit Tortoise earlier and believes it dead. But Ost insists she’s right and claims that someone else is pulling the string from behind the scenes. It turns out this hidden threat is Book Hero Kyo Ethnina, one of the Vassal wielders from the Second world. A rampant egomaniac pervert, Kyo openly desires to brainwash the women of Naofumi’s party and add them to his personal harem. The silver-haired Kyo Ethnina dresses like an alchemist. He’ll be the main villain at the beginning of Shield Hero Season 2. Kyo was not a character in the web novel, so the story events of Volume 8 and 9 are also exclusive to the light novel series. Pic credit: Minami SeiraKyo is attempting to siphon away Spirit Tortoise energy and is responsible for the disappearance of the three missing heroes Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki. But controlling the Spirit Tortoise is strictly forbidden so Glass, the Fan Hero that was introduced in the first anime season, ends up forming an alliance with Naofumi to kill the Book Hero.Rishia/Lecia was originally taken under the wing of Naofumi because he hated how Bow Hero Itsui treated her worse than a slave. Due to Rishia/Lecia being so helpful in the fight against Kyo, Naofumi asks Rishia/Lecia to form a slave pact with him because of his ability to boost of his slaves. After much consideration, Rishia decides to accept a high-level slave crest and joins Naofumis party.(In the manga version, this plot point took place earlier in Chapter 45 and both Rishia/Lecia and Keel took the slave mark to boost their abilities. But they were both very hesitant to do so since Naofumi chose to be mean-spirited and scare them both like an “evil slave trader”.)The allies eventually track down Kyo and confront him. The battle to the death with Kyo seems like it’ll end in tragedy but for the sacrificial actions of Ost. Naofumi destroys the Spirit Tortoise’s core and Kyo manages to escape to his own world while taking away some of the energy.Naofumi attempts to follow Kyo’s retreat only to find himself awakening in prison! Kyo managed to split Naofumi and Rishia/Lecia off and away from Raphalia, Filo, and the others, leaving the pair trapped in a labyrinth dimension. Worse, Naofumi finds his experience and skills reset back down to level 1!The legendary hero Kizuna Kazeyama is introduced as the Hunting Hero, whose weapon limits her to harming monsters and not humans. Because of this limitation, she was captured and trapped inside the labyrinth dimension.Friends with Glass, Kizuna is also from the same Second world. Kizuna disapproves of killing the other world’s heroes in order to save her homeworld and believes the heroes are necessary for some other reason. With the help of Kizuna, Naofumi and Rishia/Lecia are able to escape the labyrinth and find Raphtalia, Filo, Glass, L’arc, and Therese. Kizuna is happy to be reunited with her long lost comrade, but she also punishes Glass for attempting to kill Naofumi and the other legendary heroes. Along the way, they find themselves fighting an enemy that Naofumi calls Trash #2.Naofumi and Rishia/Lecia in the labyrinth with their new ally Kizuna. Pic credit: Minami SeiraWith everyone reunited, they prepare to track down Kyo and prevent him from doing something disastrous with the energy collected from the dead Spirit Tortoise. But first, they must deal with a young female samurai named Yomogi Emarl, a childhood friend of the dastardly Kyro.Yomogi deeply trusts her friends and has a strong sense of justice. What she doesn’t realize is that Kyo has been manipulating her into fighting his enemies. But will Yomogi see through his machinations?Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until The Rising Of the Shield Hero Season 2 release date to watch how Naofumi resolves all these crises. Let’s just be glad the wait for Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2 (never mind Shield Hero Season 3) isn’t too long. Stay tuned!Follow AnimeEveryday on Google News!
