The fire nation as a whole were evil colonizers you don’t kill two whole nations, and take over half one other nation and not be evil.

This is the equivalent of saying well the native Americans and Africans treated each other poorly so it’s fine the colonizers treated them badly too.

Often I think about when Gyatso was able to open up about Yama to Malaya it helped unlock the part of him that struggled with his bending and purpose

Parallel that with how in the show Aang’s love for his people was reshaped into his new love for Katara. Consider that part of his character growth and what being the Avatar meant to him

A reshaping of love from those closest to them from the past into their romantic love interests

Gyatso's casual confirmation of trans Air Nomads being welcomed and accepted in the Roku novel was unexpected but cute! It's sweet how the atla world is making an effort to explore those elements in its worldbuilding more and more ever since korrasami opened the floodgates.

Looking at some of the texts of “The Reckoning of Roku” and people response to what Gyatso say to Roku.

Note I did not read the book yet so I’m only basing this out of context. So I might be wrong about a couple of facts.

I’m going to take what Gyatso say with a grain of salt. He himself is still a child and has a lot to learn. His speeches towards Ruko does have some self-righteous attitude. I can’t help but question how much does Gyasto know and understand other nations cultures at this time. I can’t also really take what Gyasto say seriously since both he and Roku are acting like real life teenagers when talking about politics and cultural differences.

He thinks his sister has a good idea about spreading their teachings to the world (I can’t help but feel this is similar to Sozin’s belief that that it is the Fire Nation’s duty to spread their “greatness” to the world”) because he believes that there wouldn’t be so much fighting if other people were pacifists like the Air Nomads.

I’m not sure if the writer decided to have sexism be more explicit in the Fire Nation. We don’t see any of that in canon, and Azula’s reaction to being appointed as Fire Lord doesn’t scream “Me Fire Lord? The first woman to be Fire Lord?” There could be some sexism in the Fire Nation (since we do see more women at the home defense force rather than out of the field in the Earth Kingdom), but it’s not really as egregious as Gyasto makes it sound like. Now granted, this could’ve changed between Roku’s time and when Aang was out of the ice berg.

I really hope that writer questions this culture superiority Gyasto has. If Sozin and the Fire Nation are criticized for this type of thinking, then I don’t see the problem for Gyasto getting criticized for this too. It would also make sense canon wise. I never seen Aang have this type of behavior in the show and he was raised by Gyasto.
