Part 2
Traveling to Hard Mode and Beyond (15,000+ CP)

Traveling to Hard Mode and Beyond (15,000+ CP)
1. Clearing Hard to Unlock Expert
Now that you’re more familiar with Mitrasphere and powering up, you might start to lay your eyes on higher-difficulty content. With that in mind, you should definitely take a look at Expert stages. These are boss fights you can find in almost every story chapter, with an emphasis on cooperating with other players and setting up a balanced team.
Unlocking access to them simply requires you to clear the Hard stages of their chapter.
Do not despair, for Hard Mode is actually not particularly difficult. It functions exactly like Normal Mode and can be cleared solo. However, it requires a higher and increasing amount of CP to access, starting with 15,000 CP for Chapter 1 Hard.
2. Limit Breaking Gear
If you have already spent quite some time farming seeds, it may feel progressively more difficult for you to gain additional CP as you’ve maxed out your gear. The initial maximum level of equipment depends on its rarity: Lvl. 20 for 1-star items, Lvl. 30 for 2-star, Lvl. 40 for 3-star, and Lvl. 50 for 4-star.
Every item, no matter its rarity, can be limit broken 4 times to increase its maximum level by 5 per limit break, meaning 4-star items can reach a maximum level of 70. It can also be interesting to note that a fully upgraded 3-star item will reach Lvl. 60 and thus might give more stats than a standard Lvl. 50 4-star equipment. To reward you for sacrificing items, levels above the initial cap grant a higher amount of stats compared to base levels.
There are two ways to limit break items, which mostly depend on what gear is available to you.
The first method is to use perfect duplicates of your items (same element and rarity) to immediately limit break your item once, increasing its level cap. Using a perfect duplicate also allows you to limit break the maximum skill level of an item, up to skill level 9.
The second method is to use duplicates with a lower rarity. Each lower tier of rarity gives a fifth of the experience needed to level the item, so consuming a 3-star equip to limit break its 4-star equivalent will grant you 20% towards its next limit break. You will earn 4% if the item is 2 tiers below and 0.8% for 3 tiers below. This allows you to slowly limit break your gear even with common drops. However, you will not be able to raise the maximum cap of your skill level using lower-rarity duplicates.
Please note that 4-star rainbow equips do not have lower rarity equivalents, and thus rely on perfect duplicates to be limit broken. These items are however often very interesting even without any limit breaks due to their Command and Passive Skills.
Core Combat Mechanics
Jumping into Expert content will give you a new perspective on the game. Also, you might get your butt kicked by a fairly angry boss. This part is all about reminding you of a few core combat mechanics that you might have forgotten, even though they are briefly presented during the initial tutorial.
1. Moving Between Rear and Front Rows
Every weapon displays a small triangle/arrow icon indicating if using this attack will move you to the front or back row of the arena. You do not need to already be in that position to use the attack; it will simply move you to it if you are not already there.
The most important thing about combat lanes is related to mitigating incoming damage: any player in the rear row will take half damage from every direct damage source (everything except poison damage and similar status conditions basically).
As Expert fights often include abilities dealing high damage to everyone in the party, staying in the rear row when such an attack is being prepared by the boss will be helpful or even necessary to survive. Remember that dead people do not deal damage, and that resurrecting dead teammates is not always possible for your Cleric.
2. 4-Second Global Cooldown
Every time you use a weapon skill, you cannot use another for the following four seconds, which we call a “Global Cooldown” or “GCD.” It allows for consistently-paced tactical combat, rather than a reliance on pure reflexes or button-mashing.
Defensively speaking, it also means you are “locked” into your current lane for the next four seconds after using an attack. If you recognize that the boss is about to use a powerful move, it it may be dangerous to use an attack that will move you to the front.
3. Elemental Advantages and Disadvantages
Mitrasphere includes elemental advantages and disadvantages, and while you may choose to ignore them during the early stages of the game, it is something to keep in mind as it will give you an edge in tougher battles.
Attacking an enemy with a weapon that is strong against the enemy’s element (for example, a water against fire) will apply a +30% damage multiplier. On the flip side, the opposite will apply a -30% damage multiplier, significantly reducing your damage.
It is recommended to keep lower-rarity weapons of different elements for your main Job, even if its level and skill levels are lower, as it may still result in a damage increase against a particular monster.
Keep in mind that this also applies to damage taken. Your equipped armor and accessories, including pieces in your support slots, will grant you elemental resistance or lower your resistance up to 30% if everything is of the same element.
4. Buffs and Debuffs
You will notice that every Job has weapons dealing damage and weapons applying beneficial effects (or “buffs”) to themselves or their whole party. This is another reason why having a balanced party is typically the best strategy, as more support-oriented roles like the Archer are still particularly useful, even though their damage is lower than a Swordsman or a Mage.
It is generally more efficient to buff yourself then follow up with a devastating attack than to do two low-damage consecutive attacks. It is especially true when the Dragonkin Gauge comes into play. Activating your Dragonkin typically multiplies a weapon’s damage by three. Stacking your buffs then unleashing a Dragonkin attack will turn many problems into dust.
You will also notice that every buff or debuff is followed by a letter (e.g. Physical Damage Dealt UP (10%) (A)). This letter explains how this particular effect interacts with other effects.
Effects of the same nature (e.g. Physical Damage Dealt UP) with a different letter will stack; in other words, they will both be applied for their respective duration.
For example, applying Physical Damage Dealt UP (20%) (A) and Physical Damage Dealt UP (50%) (B) means that every attack you do while both buffs remain active will benefit from 70% extra damage.
Effects of the same nature with an identical letter will not stack. When you apply the second, you will keep the stronger buff and refresh its duration with the second effect’s duration.
For example, applying Physical Damage Dealt UP (50%) (7.9s) (A) then Physical Damage UP (10%) (24s) (A) means that every attack you do in the next 24 seconds will benefit from 50% extra damage. As long as the buff doesn’t expire, you just need to reapply the second buff to benefit from the stronger effect of the first
Finally, please remember that you can check what kind of effects affect a character (be it you, an ally, or an enemy) during a fight by pressing and holding your finger over the character.
5. Understanding Common Concepts in Boss Battles
There are various forms of boss battles in Mitrasphere, spanning across Grand Battles, Extra Battles, Expert boss battles, and more to come. When challenging the more difficult levels of bosses, you’ll come faced with various interesting game mechanics. Most bosses have an assortment of abilities that are fun to experience when you come face to face with them for the first time, but they also have more common attacks that can be categorized into the following:
a. Tank Busters
“Tank Busters” in MMO terminology refer to particularly strong single-target attacks that are meant to be absorbed by the most durable character of the group, which will be the Guardian in Mitrasphere. The Guardian’s damage mitigation buffs and more defensively-oriented stats will allow them to survive these hits, while other Jobs would likely be severely hurt or killed on impact. It is paramount for the party’s Guardian to have his mitigation buffs on and retain the boss’s attention (or aggro) when this attack happens.
b. Raid Busters
“Raid Busters” refer to party-wide attacks that are meant to be soaked in by the entire group. These attacks target everyone in the party no matter the circumstances. They will typically deal less damage if damage reduction debuffs are applied to the boss, if the party stands in the rear row and/or applies damage mitigation buffs, or may be completely negated if you increase your evasion or reduce the boss’s accuracy to force a lucky miss.
c. Cleaves
“Cleaves” or “row attacks” refer to attacks dealing damage to an entire row, (\most commonly the front row. They are often as powerful as tank busters but may hit multiple players if they stand in the harm’s war when the attack lands. As they deal very high damage but are easily avoidable, it is important for non-Guardians to move to the rear row to avoid getting killed. However, contrary to tank busters, at least one person should stay in the hit lane, preferably the party’s Guardian, as the attack will always hit at least one person. If everyone is in the rear row when a cleave lands, everyone will be hit.
d. Other Common Mechanics
Most boss fights include a few specific mechanics that differ from the usual array of attacks presented above. Identifying them and learning how to deal with them is part of the fun of any RPG. However, below are a few mechanics that are still relatively common.
Buffs and Debuffs: Enemies also have access to abilities increasing their power or decreasing yours. Some of these have a short duration, increasing the potency of their next move, while others can last the whole fight.
Damage On Action: Some enemies can apply poison or other similar status conditions on one or several targets. These skills are listed as debuffs and deal damage every time you use a skill based on a percentage of your maximum health. Some weapons that players can acquire can also apply poison. While most bosses are immune to it, it can be devastating on anyone that is affected by it.
Guts: Some enemies benefit from a specific buff called “Guts.” Guts allow them to resist lethal damage. If an attack is meant to drop their health to 0, they will instead survive with 1 health point and lose one stack of Guts, assuming they have more than one. Guts can also be applied to a player, although it is a relatively rare effect at the current juncture.
e. Meeting Players to Tackle Boss Fights
You cannot clear difficult boss stages by yourself even with the best equipment and mechanics in mind. At this point, you’ll need to find other like-minded players to group with. You have a few tools at your disposal for this.
First, try joining a battle in progress. This works best for content currently being challenged by many players. To check if there is a team with an open slot fighting your desired stage, simply choose “Coop” instead of “Start” after selecting a stage. Active teams with open slots will be displayed here.
Second, recruiting in the World Chat via the General or Recruit tab. For more efficient communication, it is recommended to state your Job and targeted content (e.g. “Cleric LFG Chapter 2 EX”) as there are many ongoing battles in the game and a balanced group is generally more efficient.
Third, you can use the Groups feature to communicate more easily with players you want to play with regularly. Groups are persistent chat rooms that you can join or create and may also serve as a substitute for guilds. Every player may be a part of more than one Group.
Finally, you can find fellow players on your usual social networks such as Discord. Don’t hesitate to try to set up activities yourself as many players are waiting for an open slot in a group!
Bonus!

Poker Tips - Guide to Playing Starting Hands - The Big Blind
This poker article is about the tricky question of starting hand strategy. In poker your starting position is determined by where the button is and this can make a huge difference to the way the game starts and develops. To stack the odds as best as humanly possible, to coin the phrase "make your own luck" you need to know how to approach hand play from the different starting positions. In this article I am going to cover the Big Blind.
The Big Blind is very similar to the Small Blind but instead of putting half a BB (Big Bet) you put in a whole one before the cards are even dealt out. The hands that we discussed playing in the Small Blind are the same hands were going to want to play from the Big Blind. The hands you want to be raising with are premium hands A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, A-Ks, and A-Ko. I would reraise a raise only with A-A, K-K, and A-Ks from this position. The rest of the hands I want to just call somebody's raise.
The other hands I would call a raise with include the following; 10-10, 9-9, 8-8, 7-7, 6-6, 5-5, 4-4, 3-3, 2-2. Now with these low pocket pairs we are looking for a set so we don't want to be calling huge raises with them. 5xbb max with these hands from this position. Say there is a raise and then a reraise then its on you just get out of the pot, no matter how tempting those tens are you are most likely dominated and we want to go into a hand the favorite 90% of the time, we want and need every edge.
Now some people play the A-Qs, A-Js in this particular situation, and I'm not saying its wrong or right but I will say this; if you have absolutely no idea what your opponent is raising with from early position then fold it until you have the correct information. If you see him show down a hand like Q-Js from early position even once I would defend my blind in a heads up pot with this guy every time I had an A-Q, A-Js. I would still be cautious about it though because even a bad player can pick up an A-K, but I would feel way more comfortable with it against a guy who opens with Q-Js, I'd rather wait for a much stronger hand.
This situation also comes up; the guy in the cut off raises every time when everyone else has folded, you're in the blind and you pick up the A-Qs. Again I would say try to get some information about the guy before you go making this call. Whenever you check to an aggressive player they are going to take a bite at the pot. So if you miss the flop he's going to bet, when you hit the flop he's going to bet. The key in this situation is being comfortable enough with your hand to take it to the river no matter what when you hit an Ace or you hit a Queen without a King on the board, because he is going to keep on biting if he has position. That's with a LAG (Loose-Aggressive) type of player.
All other hands you just want to check to see a flop. You really want two pair or better with any hands that you check with to see a flop. Don't go nuts with an open ended straight draw when you have an 8-5s and the flop is a rainbow 6-7-8. Remember it's only a draw that you have approximately a 30% chance of winning. He could already have the straight with a 9-10s. So if that 9 does come your smashed and the same with a 4 http://flopthenutstraight.com.
Four to a flush draws should be played with caution as well especially if it's not the nut flush draw. With the nut flush draw meaning A-Xs or if the flop comes spade, spade, spade and you have the Ace of spades you want to make sure your opponent does not have an Ace as well because if he does not then you can add 3 more outs to your hand. So a semi-bluff isn't a bad play here. Say you have the nut flush draw (9 outs) with A-9s. The flop was 2h-5h-7s. Now you think an Ace or even a 9 will give you the best hand then you add 3 outs for the Ace and 3 outs for the 9. 3+3+9=15 total outs.
So now you multiply that by 4 to give you the percentage of hitting your hand. 4x15=60%. So now you know how much to semi-bluff. How much you ask? 60% of the pot should be your flop semi-bluff bet. The turn bet should be cut in half if you miss the turn because you only have a single card to come. So only bet 30% of the pot on the turn if you wish to continue with semi-bluffing or you can check and hope he does as well. If he does not check and bets 3/4ths the pot or more I would fold.
Now say you think the only thing that's going to save you is the flush in a hand like this. Then you only have 9 outs. 9x4=36 so you have a 36% chance of winning the hand then you only want to bet 40% of the pot (round it up or down). This is a good semi-bluff move because you want to try to keep control of the betting. I know these bets seem kind of low but believe me when I say that's ok. They might be thinking why is he betting so low?
Weakness usually means strength so your projecting weakness so they might think your strong even when your not. The point of this semi-bluff is to take control of the betting while giving yourself correct odds to stay in the hand. The point of this semi-bluff is not to win the pot on the spot (although it would be nice and it does happen). This semi-bluff strategy works very well against calling stations. You may be asking what does this have to do with the Big Blind. Well you don't know how many times your going to run into situations just like this from the Blinds and also late position and I'd rather touch on it now then have you go sit down and run into a situation like this with absolutely no clue on how to play your hand.

Pokémon Trading Card Game: Ranking the New Amazing Rares
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article is presented by:
The latest set in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Vivid Voltage, is introducing a brand new tier of rarity: the Amazing Rare. Distinguished by gorgeous watercolor rainbow art and a distinctive ‘A’ symbol, six Pokémon are part of the initial wave of these highly sought-after cards.
Though the six do vary in terms of strategic offerings, all Amazing Rares are subject to the following: they are Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, Basic, and require three different types of Energy to use all of their attacks. Aside from being nice to look at, they do each require a bit of know-how to use them properly, with some pros and cons any time you want to put one in a deck.
More than just potentially great additions to your decks, these are awesome collector’s items. They’re hitting North American stores this month, but have been on the market in Japan for sometime now, meaning we’ve a sense of how much they’re worth, in addition to their competitive value. You can find the new TCG Vivid Voltage expansion on eBay now.
Here we’re ranking all six from worst to best, so you know exactly which to look for right away.
6. Rayquaza
At one end of scale, we have the new Rayquaza. From the jump, this one has slightly lower health than the promo Rayquaza from Sword & Shield, with 120 HP as opposed to 130 HP, remaining Colorless. Resistance to Fighting and weakness to Lightning are the same too, and current rotations have made those desirable in standard play.
Where the Amazing Rare Rayquaza really falls short is in its one attack. Using a minimum of one Grass, one Lightning, and one Fighting Energy, Rayquaza can deal 80 damage multiplied by the amount of basic Energy on the monster, discarding the Energy afterwards. So, the base level is 240, moving up from there. The key terminology here is ‘basic Energy’, you need to get three different types of basic Energy on the card before you can even attack, locking out shortcuts like Aurora Energy. Gathering those three Energies that quickly is tough, and once you do it, you’re one Boss’s Orders away from Rayquaza hitting the bench. Too risky for now. The Japanese version of the card is available at the lower end of the price range at $27.
5. Zacian
Another Amazing Rare that’s taking a health cut, this is the lowest HP Zacian in Sword & Shield so far, with 110 HP, lower than the 120 HP Metal-type from Rebel Clash, and the 220 HP Zacian V. This one is Psychic with a weakness to Metal, no resistance, and a retreat cost of two Colorless, so you can Air Balloon it out of the Active spot if needed.
Zacian’s attacks are all worthwhile, if simple. The first is for one colorless, delivers 30 damage and can put a basic Energy card from your discard pile onto this Pokémon. Then, for one Grass, one Psychic, and one Metal, Zacian does 150 damage, 300 if your opponent has a VMAX in play. This won’t take out many VMAX Pokémon, who usually have over 300 HP, but it will likely deal with any other heavy-hitters in your opponent’s roster, including many Tag-Teams such as Celebi and Venusaur, or even Moltres and Zapdos and Articuno. This Zacian is currently fetching around $44 on its own, if you’re so inclined.
4. Zamazenta
Zamazenaa’s Amazing Rare incarnation is very similar to Zacian, for whom it now has a weakness, but it’s the after effects of its main attack that give Zamazenta the edge. Now a Fighting type, in contrast to usually being a Metal type, this Zamazenta may not have huge HP, at 110, but it can be tricky for an opponent running a certain kind of Pokémon.
The first attack is the same as Zacian’s, using one Colorless to deal 30 damage and retrieve a basic Energy from the discard. The second, using one Lightning, one Fighting and one Metal, is the kicker. Amazing Shield does 150 damage flat, so it’s making a dent, and then Zamazenta is immune from damage from VMAX Pokémon for the entire next turn. All damage from meta-friendly Pokémon like Lapras VMAX, Eternetus VMAX, and Centiskorch VMAX is prevented. This is situational, certainly, but it’s a headache against the right decks. For around $20, this legendary shield dog is a steal for its potential uses.

3. Raikou
The next best Amazing Rare is Raikou, whose health is actually nearly static compared to his brethren. 110 HP is lower than Raikou GX, but higher than the Skyridge Raikou‘s, hitting a sweet spot. As a Lightning-type, this tiger-like monster has weakness to Fighting, and another retreat cost of two Colorless.
Raikou has one move, Amazing Shot, for one Grass, one Lightning, and one Metal, and it’s a doozy. This does 120 damage, and 120 additional damage to one of your opponent’s benched Pokémon, so it’s a two-for-one. This presents all sorts of possibilities. You might not KO what’s right in front of you, but if your opponent has anything tricky on the bench that they’re keeping safe for the time-being, you can knock it out. Something to keep an eye on in competitive play for sure. The $40-and-up price-tag reflects the strength.
2. Celebi
A low-cost, low-risk team-amplifier here, the Amazing Rare Celebi is something that’ll need protection, but offers some great strategic value. At 60 HP, this Grass version of the mythical Pocket Monster has weakness to Fire, but an especially cheap retreat cost of one Colorless.
For this one, the three colors are spread between its two abilities. The first is a straight attack for one Grass, that does 30 damage for every basic Energy attached to your opponent’s active Pokémon. If your adversary has been loading up, for something like a Pikachu & Zekrom GX that uses six Energy, you could take a swing that makes them regret it. The second move’s the real interesting one – Amazing Bloom, for one Lightning and one Psychic, you can evolve all your benched Pokémon, if you’ve got the evolutions in your deck, allowing you to side-step other requirements to buff up your bench and go on the assault very quickly. At $19, the Celebi Amazing Rare is under-valued at the moment – pick it up.
1. Jirachi
The best Amazing Rare, and resident Metal-type of the six, is Jirachi. 70 HP, resistance to Grass and weakness to Fire, this Jirachi carries over and, in some ways, improves its uses from previous versions.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The previous standard Jirachi (TEU) used Stellar Wish to look at the top five cards of your deck, letting you put a Trainer card from those five into your hand.you’d then shuffle your deck and Jiarchi went to sleep. Amazing Rare Jirachi’s Dreamy Revelation reduces this to two cards, but you can take either of them into your hand, you don’t need to reveal them, and Jirachi doesn’t go to sleep after. What’s even better is, the next ability, Amazing Star, uses one Psychic, one Fighting and one Metal to take seven basic Energy cards from your deck and attach them to your Pokémon anyway you like.
Jirachi here is effectively an engine for drawing exactly what you need and loading up on Energy. Its price reflects this, already at $50, but if you don’t add it to your collection, you’ll definitely be facing one, and that’s not a position you want to be in.

Nutrition for cycling: 10 tips to get your food and drink dialed
Written by www.cyclingweekly.com
When it comes to food, there’s a wealth of information available. Some of it can be confusing, conflicting or just plain complicated. Here, Lynn Clay provides a glossary of important nutritional terms and explains how the straightforward process of getting your nutritional needs sorted can help you become a faster, stronger and healthier cyclist
If you are keen on cycling, you’re probably interested in your diet, health and weight as well — but if you find nutrition information dry, chewy and a real headache, it’s time to go back to basics.
Get these things right and the rest is just the icing on the cake. From the importance of carbohydrate and protein to when and what to eat and drink before, during and after a ride, we have the answers.
1. Consume the right amount of calories
The first thing to celebrate if you’ve just taken up cycling is that it increases your calorie requirement. Before you throw down your magazine and run to the fridge to indulge in your favourite treat, however, be aware that many cyclists end up rewarding themselves above and beyond the calories burnt on a ride, so although you can eat a little more, try not to abandon healthy choices or to max out on portions.
A good way to estimate your additional calorie need is to multiply the distance travelled in miles by 40-50 calories. Therefore, if you’ve been out for a 30-mile ride you can estimate an extra calorie need of between 1,200-1,500 calories erring towards the bottom end of this if you’re a slower or lighter rider and toward the top end if you’re faster or heavier.
Of course, having a GPS device which estimates calories burned according to the terrain of the ride will give you a more accurate indication of your additional need and you should take off any calories consumed on the ride (or any extra calories ingested in the immediate period before or afterwards).
In response to your ride, although not in the immediate period afterwards, your appetite should increase above the level you are used to as your body releases hungry hormones in its mission to maintain body fat stores.
If you’re seeking a little weight loss, then aim to leave a shortfall in calories replaced to create a deficit that will encourage some fat loss, but limit this to 250 calories a day deficit maximum if you want to continue to ride strong. It’s also wise to avoid cutting calories when you’re in stressful, long or high intensity training periods or close to an event.
2. Carbohydrate: the body’s fuel supply
Carbohydrate is the body’s primary energy source for cycling. Stored in the muscle, any excess in total intake above the body’s calorie needs will be stored as fat (the same is true for protein and fat).
Your weekly requirement for carbohydrate will depend on how many miles per week you ride and other lifestyle demands. Sports scientists will recommend intake within a range of 5-9g of carbohydrate for each kilogram you weigh per day. The problem with this is that many of us don’t want to spend time counting grams of carbohydrate, so a practical recommendation is far more useful.
As large servings of carbohydrate lead to a peak and trough of energy that can leave you feeling very lethargic, a good practical way to eat enough carbohydrate to support your training, but avoid the effect of large servings is to aim to eat a fist-sized portion of a low-glycaemic carbohydrate (‘slow-burn’ carbs such as wholegrains, fruit, vegetables) with each meal or snack. This could be cereal such as oats at breakfast, a small piece of fruit mid-morning and mid-afternoon, a wholegrain sandwich at lunch and perhaps some wholegrain rice or quinoa with your evening meal.
In this way, these small servings will supply enough energy without leading to an energy drop. Another advantage of eating in this way is that 90 minutes to two hours after your meal, you are likely to have digested the smaller portion and be ready to get on your bike.
It’s worth noting that all carbohydrates are not equal and will have a different impact on energy levels and health. Although many celebrate the green light to sugary carbohydrates that cycling appears to allow without showing on your waistline, indulging in too many sugary carbohydrates in the regular daily diet can have a negative impact on recovery, energy levels and health. It’s always best to opt instead for wholegrain slow-release carbohydrates and fruit and vegetables that are packed full of nutrients rather than refined sugar.
3. Are you eating enough protein?
Protein is often thought of as muscle food and not relevant to cyclists, but getting adequate protein into your diet will support your health, immune function and recovery. Responsible for tissue maintenance in the body and playing a vital role in immune function, it follows that your recovery will be sub-optimal if you are accelerating muscle damage through training while not meeting your needs.
With recent research highlighting that protein is also more filling than an equal calorie measure of carbohydrate or fat, increasing your intake just a little can help to keep your appetite under control too.
Including beans and pulses in your diet along with lean meats, fish and low-fat dairy foods can help you meet your requirement. It’s advisable to limit your consumption of red and processed meats that are linked with a higher incidence of disease. Just like carbohydrate, a small amount of protein in each meal or snack is preferable to plonking a large, hard-to-digest piece of protein into one meal resulting in better energy levels.
4. Good fats, not bad fats
The type of fat you select is critical to health, performance and weight maintenance. Fats are grouped into ‘good’ fats and ‘bad’ fats. Good fats include polyunsaturated fats (Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats) and monounsaturated fats (Omega 9 fats). Whereas saturated fats found in meats and processed foods are to be limited, Omega 3 and 6 fats are vital to maintaining health and are found in nuts, seeds, fish and oils such as flaxseed, borage and starflower oil.
Additional benefits from these fats include a reduction of inflammation in the body, making them great for those with asthma and allergies while also providing a stimulatory benefit to the metabolism, and therefore assisting in weight loss. Good fats are known to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and are therefore an important part of the diet to assist in the prevention of heart disease. Aiming for around 20g of good fat per day is a great strategy for health support without the risk of adding too many calorific fats to the diet.
5. Eat the right vitamins and minerals
There are two main types of vitamins — fat-soluble and water-soluble ones. The fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are stored in the body. The water-soluble ones, however, are not stored in the body and therefore are needed in the diet every day. Minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc are also needed daily, but only in very small quantities.
These vitamins and minerals can be found in a variety of foods. The NHS recommendation of five pieces of fruit and vegetables per day is aimed to assist in the daily achievement of these vitamins and minerals along with sufficient fibre intake. Selecting a rainbow of colours and aiming for darker-coloured fruits and vegetables is recommended.
To ensure deficiencies don’t develop, especially when training regularly, a good multivitamin is also a wise investment but avoid mega-dosing on nutrients unless used as a short-term treatment (for example in the case of vitamin C and zinc use during a cold to reduce severity and duration of symptoms).
6. Make sure you drink enough to perform at your best
Drinking enough fluid will not only support better riding, but will result in better energy levels while you’re going about your daily life. If you have experienced that foggy-head feeling after a long run it’s usually a sign to drink up. In addition to drinking 1.5-2 litres of water across the day, cyclists should ideally be drinking additional fluid to match any loss during riding.
An easy way to work out your need is to weigh yourself pre and post-ride. For each kilo you have lost, you require an additional litre of water, so if a 60-minute ride leaves you 0.5kg lighter then you just require an extra 500ml of fluid in the diet to rebalance things.
With just two per cent dehydration resulting in a significant reduction in performance, it’s worth paying attention to this statistic. It’s such a small simple step, but it will make a huge difference.
7. Fuel your ride properly
If you are eating adequately across the day, easy-paced rides of less than 90 minutes don’t always need additional fuel support. Your carbohydrate stores will provide plenty of fuel over this period.
If you are heading out for a longer or more intense ride, however, topping up your carbohydrate stores will support better performance so that you still have plenty of strength towards the end of your route.
Studies indicate that a fuelling plan delivering between 30g and 60g of carbohydrate per hour of riding is optimum, so experimenting within this range is a good start point. You can opt for a carbohydrate drink, a mix of water and gels or bars, or a mixture of all three. Just be sure to check the carbohydrate content rather than assuming that the total declared weight is carbohydrate.
The amount of carbohydrate people can take on board is very individual. Some may be able to digest 30g per hour whereas others can take on 60g without any gastrointestinal distress. Start at 30g and gradually increase this on subsequent rides to find out how much you can tolerate. If you can tolerate 60g, this will support better performance, so it’s worth trying to get your body used to this.
Consider that exercise intensity will dictate what you can digest too, along with how long you have been riding. Solid foods such as bars are usually better tolerated towards the beginning of a ride and are ideal for the first half of a sportive, for example, but taking on a bar for a high-intensity race such as a time trial, would leave you struggling to digest it. As the duration or intensity goes up, switch from bars to gels to make up any extra carbohydrate in addition to your drink.
When taking on carbohydrate in a gel form be sure to take on water with it too, unless you are using an ‘isotonic’ gel, with the most effective fuel delivery being achieved if your carbohydrate is taken on in a 6-8 per cent solution. This will require 125-150ml of water to be consumed with each 10g of carbohydrate delivered by a gel (this will contain some fluid, so will lower your additional need).
8. Recovery food: when and what to eat after you’ve ridden
The first 20 minutes after a ride is known to be the optimal refuelling period where nutrients are taken up more efficiently and transported to the muscle stores. Taking on a carbohydrate-rich meal or drink in this period will improve the rate at which your energy stores refill, which will have a direct impact on how much stored energy you have available for your next ride.
With research indicating that an intake of 1g of carbohydrate per kilogram you weigh during this time is perfect for refuelling, a 70g carbohydrate feed for a 70kg cyclist is perfect. Combining this with 10g of protein will reduce your likelihood of getting injured, assist muscle recovery and reduce muscle soreness and has even been shown to speed up carbohydrate muscle refuelling.
A milk-based drink, a whey or soy protein-enriched smoothie, a jacket potato and beans, or a specialised recovery formula all make good, sensible options. With some of the specialised formulas you can benefit from ingredients such as glutamine and colostrum, two proteins that can provide extra immune support after strenuous training sessions or races.
9. Caffeine: good or bad?
Some people avoid caffeine like the plague and others embrace it for its performance-supporting effects. If you’re a fan, you’ll find most sports physiologists are with you with studies showing that 1-3mg of caffeine per kilo of body weight can result in enhanced performance, increased power output and improved mental focus, with larger doses generally offering no additional benefit.
Interestingly, caffeine’s effects appear to be negated by the heat, with studies in hotter climates showing no benefit. This may be due to fatigue being limited by thermoregulation in these conditions rather than fuel supply.
If you are thinking of giving a caffeinated drink or gel a try in an event try it in training first. However, it’s not for everyone. If you suffer from high blood pressure or a heart condition, caffeine use is not recommended and if you are on any medication, it’s best to check with your doctor before giving it a try.
10. Get your pre-ride nutrition timing right
It can be pretty difficult working out what to eat prior to a ride and I think most cyclists will have experienced both cycling hungry and trying to pedal uphill with a stomach that feels like it has a lead weight in it! Neither of these are a particularly pleasant experience. To avoid these situations, time your pre-ride meal for at least 90 minutes prior to hitting the road.
If you eat small, regular meals over the day, downsizing your three main meals to make room for a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack, it makes it easy to ensure you are fueled before you head out. Instead, choose a low-fat, carbohydrate-dominant meal or snack with a small amount of lean protein, as this will be digested a lot more rapidly than fatty or protein dominant meals.

Sten Hugo Hiller - Mountain Climbing - Limited Tonnage
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A News channel for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the October 3319 Limited Tonnage
Going on a mountain climb among those of higher level, bigger formation and more tonnage is normally not the road to success. On K3 some of these considerations was in effect. Firstly I was lowest level of all the contenders, more than half the opposition had at least 20 Levels on me. But as this was limited tonnage, 1250 tons on my mountain, formation size was more or less irrelevant, and those who had twice my tonnage or more had misunderstood the rules and would be easily dispatched. At the 50 minutes to scramble signal I had gotten to the slopes That left the big problems, those with correct formations and tonnage several levels above me or with a lineup I couldn’t match. Bernhard Johnson Had claimed the top, and all my fancy footwork didn’t help me past his first line. I started to count myself lucky if I managed to blow up three of his mechs. Of course, my place on the slopes was by no way secure, behind me was canny and dangerous opponents. Christine Mainer, KiloTone, Lachance and Harding to mention those I feared most. At get go nothing much had changed, and I sat quietly for a while. Still no action at the 20 minute mark, so I started to chug Hatorades and see if I could get past Johnsons first line. The RNG gods smiled at me, Or perhaps he just rolled down the mountain because an uncontrollable mirth. Anyway I was at the top. KiloTone woke up and we had a vicious seesaw over who would be allowed to stand at the top. He took a short break, probably to chug down another super, And Johnson finished laughing and blew me off the top. Sacrificing my remaining supers to the RNG Gods didn’t help, but standing on the slopes as lowest contender is a good showing. Those who stood at the tops to receive Honor, Gold Nephilax and invitations to higher Mountains this time were:
Div 1 (21 players): Gary Allsop, FUSION (4s) Div 2 (16 players): Theo Peeples, The Isle of Misfit Toys (6s) Div 3 (22 players): Bernhard Johnson, Death`s Collectors (1m,31s) Div 4 (43 players): Robert C Goetz Sr., Deaths Collectors (seconds) Div 5 (16 players): Richard Kangas, Black Star Suicide Squad (5m,10s) Div 6 (37 players): Darryl Proctor, Black Star Bandits (1m,55s) Div 7 (36 players): Chris Page, Death`s curse (12m,14s) Div 8 (30 players): Jack Wade, Mad Pork (6m,28s) Div 9 (37 players): Tygra_, Mech Point Academy "A" Team (12m,54s) Div 10 (25 players): Salvo Messina (56m,10s) Div 11 (9 players): LionOThundera, Karma (1h,21s) Div 12 (5 players): Michael Walker (7h,40m)
Total players: 297, Total Medals: 192 (of 216 possible)
Quite a battle here. Three Golds decided during the last 10 Seconds, 6 more during last 15 minutes. Collectors got as only clan two Golds, two unafiliated players also won golds, and my Guess is they will receive several invitations to join clans over the next days.
Div 2 and 5 not filled up can be blamed on the brackets, div 11 and 12 seem to be back to not enough known about the KOTM.
As I slowly gathered my destroyed force my division winner, Bernhard Johnson (#922277) came and helped me pick up the pieces. I decided to pick his brain and get an interview as the opportunity presented itself
Sten Hugo Hiller Congratulations on a well deserved win. While I might have wished for it to end 92 seconds earlier, the result is what counts. Your career started back in `02 and you were with the Overlords III until you switched to Murderbots in 09, and Collectors in `10. Looks to suit you well.
Bernard Johnson Yeah; I haven't been playing nearly as long as most. But I'm very competitive...obviously. The Overlords were...shrinking and eventually our Leader left and I went looking for a more active home. The AFF have been good to me.
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes they certainly have from your results. Your first gold was in triple Rainbow back in June `04 and this was Your 15th, righ`t?
Bernard Johnson Something like that. I started keeping a spread sheet of all mechs per level along with equipment and weapons and have been calculating their relative combat values. It’s been extremely helpful in weighing my options to get the most bang for my...Niodes. Still, sometimes its just luck. I have also tracked the KOTM events and have a special build for almost everyone. That guarantees at least a Bronze place in every event. Those add up!
Sten Hugo Hiller You can’t argue with a success like yours. But even you might have some weaknesses, what is your preferred format, limited or unlimited?
Bernard Johnson As my record will show; Single Rainbow is my specialty. I have noticed that there are very few who have a carefully crafted SRB line up. I use it every clan war and win Gold every KOTM "E Pluribus Unum" event. Unless one specializes in it, it’s hard to beat someone who does. In Clan Wars, it doesn't get many defense wins, because most avoid it. That takes a whole column of win potential away from an opponent...no RNG chances if they won't even try. The y believe that they will lose and they are usually right. So, yeah. I love Single Rainbow. It requires very careful management that most aren't really ready to invest the time and attention to.
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes your Single rainbow is impressive, and you have won other rainbow events as well. Can I assume rainbows are your favorite formation type?
Bernard Johnson Well; only SRB and DRB. I find that TRB at levels that have 35 or less total slots is something that nearly everyone already has. There are some that have 20 Boreas or whatever, but most everyone can scrounge up 3 of each type for at least 30 slots. My preference really has to do with potential success rate...I like winning. (What can I say?) My goal when competing is being the best I can and I found a particular specialty that I cannot just be competitive, but be fairly dominant. Works for me. Some other specialties are lacking. The 1200 Ton and 10 Ton max...everyone can put one of those together and rely on a bit of luck. No real planning or niche. I have them to combat them, but they are simple and require no real forward thinking to compete in.
Sten Hugo Hiller You still need the mechs, weapons and equipment. Another type of limited format is the weapon types, do you feel comfortable with them?
Bernard Johnson Not really. I have found, so far anyway, that those don't seem to be worth specializing in. I have load outs for them, but I have found that having an 'Anti type' is just as effective. E.G. a missile event means that specialist load up on missile shields that are vulnerable to fire. I run a split of missile and ice then and though I have never gotten gold; I do well without having to payout anything but a bit of time and thought.
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes, enemy’s weakness is never to be ignored. The last general type of limited is the weight type. What is your preference there, mechtype or tonnage, say 50ton or Oggun?
Bernard Johnson I tend to favor the 50 ton. Many believe that the Oggun is best at that weight class; but I find that what the Luison gives up in armor and 3X damage multiplier is more than made up in having more equipment slots, carries more weapons and is faster. So nobody at my level has all Fides or Vizi; but sprinkling a few in there with Luison's that can get a damage bonus from every weapon type and have a very high chance of 2X damage are very effective.
Sten Hugo Hiller So all in all (except for rainbow), what kind of KOTM would you like to see in the near future?
Bernard Johnson SRB always; all the time! What else?! GOLD BABY! I would also be interested in a SRB Chrono event that would be a little different. A Warg, iMEch or Luison specialist is fine. And for a change of pace; an all crystal mech and equipment would be new and interesting; though I don't know if it would be something that the game's code would allow.
Sten Hugo Hiller Neither do I, but from your mouth to the Developers ears. You mentioned chrono, do you prefer them over the sudden death events?
Bernard Johnson No. I prefer that short ones. Since I have at least a Bronze viable line up for everything; the more they run; the more goodies I can accumulate and/or sell! The Chrono that's running right now is perfect: 8 hours and done. Get your prize and on to the next!
Sten Hugo Hiller Selling stuff to get other things. Some have mentioned that resources are tight now, do you feel that to be a problem?
Bernard Johnson Definitely! I used to get up a half an hour earlier so I could watch endless streams of videos for free lasers; which of course, were sold for Niodes and resources. The new Circuit fights work well for me for crystals, Ferrite and Bioptics, but the influx of premium currency has slowed to a trickle for the last couple of months. I certainly hope that they return! I can sleep when I'm dead! Give Niodes now!
Sten Hugo Hiller We can just hope. As one of the more accomplished players there are many who would listen to your advice on what mechs/weapons/equipment you recommend. What is the best advice you can give them?
Bernard Johnson Follow the leaders. You can watch what Fusion and Zeon and the Misfits are doing; even if you have to attack them and get obliterated. See what works; then plan accordingly. I have my next 10 mech expansion slots already planned out; my next 50 points from levels and CW wins planned out, my next weapon and gear purchases planned out. All based on what clearly works. Note that all gear is not created equal; speed kills, so Engines are always priority 1. Some crystal gear is nearly as good for some slots and mech types as niode gear, so don't buy Niode equipment when crystal will work. Spend those on the weapons and engine and chassis slots that are incomparable to the crystal versions. Resource management and careful planning is the key to this game, just like any strategy and/or building game. Track, plan, scheme...and be patient. Keep thinking and success will follow.
Sten Hugo Hiller Thank you for your deep Insights. Now it seem the Collectors and the AFF have a big celebration coming up. Any final Words?
Bernard Johnson Three words: Squad Wars Gold! Get some!
Sten Hugo Hiller Cant, we will probably meet you again... For the others, good Luck
Upcoming Event King Chrono. That is get Your best formation and run to the mountain to get Your Pictures taken near the top to score points. but be quick about it because:
Event ends February 4 between 0300 and 0400 New York Time.

Ragnarok: Gods and Giants
About how it goes every time I face a new monster.
Playing Ragnarok is a process of repeatedly convincing yourself that your character is getting stronger and you’re getting better and then suddenly getting torn apart–quite literally–by the next level of foe. That’s not quite a complaint, but it’s inescapable that while the main game is about as difficult as NetHack, its worst foes would have the Wizard of Yendor for lunch.
I spent the bulk of this last session finishing up the dungeon beneath the opening forest. The dungeon consisted of 3 levels and 27 screens, and the key plot reason to be there was to obtain Odin’s spear, Gungnir, from Vidur. As I closed my last session, I was having no luck even scratching Vidur let alone killing him. I tried it hastened with Potions of Speed; I tried it invisible; I tried it under the influence of a Potion of Phasing, which doubles your armor class. He still kept killing me in one round.
Maybe don’t eat random mushrooms.
I took time to explore the rest of the dungeon to strengthen my character and hopefully find more valuable items. Some notes from that process:
The levels aren’t all randomly generated. Even when they are, there are rules set on some of them to avoid exits on certain sides of the map. The Temple of Vidur on Level 3 is only supposed to be accessible from a hole on Level 2, not any of the other Level 3 maps. However, a Wand of Tunneling or a pick-axe can undo such intentions–sometimes.
More intrinsics: fire dragons confer fire resistance; “blurs” make you faster (although I think just temporarily); wraiths give you level increases, although at a certain point they stopped working. Through other means that I didn’t fully note, I have also acquired resistances to petrification and death rays.
This sounds so unappealing.
There’s one mushroom that fills you up when you eat it. The others are not worth experimenting with.
Kalvins are horrid, hateful monsters who swipe one of your eyes out with every hit. It turns out that a blessed potion of curing will regrow an eye, but I was so traumatized by my temporary blindness that the next time I found a Scroll of Extinction, I used it on Kalvins.
Worse that Kalvins are Zardons. They can send out a piercing wail that hits you for about 50 hit points at a time from anywhere within the dungeon level. Guess what else soon went extinct?
I’m not sure I should have this kind of power.
One damned hit from a werewolf is enough to give you lycanthropy, which requires a blessed Potion of Curing to cure. Scrolls of Blessing aren’t so common that I like wasting them on this.
On the matter of Scrolls of Extinction, I can’t be the only roguelike player who has secretly thought that if I just find enough of them, I can genocide every monster in the game.
I keep finding Amulets of Quickening, which double my speed and are thus incredibly useful. But they have limited duration, and then they run out, they turn into something called “Eyes of Sertrud.” I have no idea if they do anything in their “Sertrud” form.
A couple of enemy types are capable of reproducing faster than you can kill them. One is these little tiny things called “secitts.” The second are tree creatures called “faleryns.” I had to abandon a dungeon level to the latter creature when they wouldn’t stop multiplying, but I gained about 15 levels trying to kill them all. If I need to grind, I’m going back there.
You guys can have this dungeon level. I’m just trying to get to the stairs.
The best spell scroll combination I’ve found is a Scroll of Blessing with a Scroll of Enhancement. Use the former on the latter and then the latter on a piece of armor or a weapon, and you soon have a +13 (or higher) item. I’m carrying a +14 mirror shield and a +13 silver sword because of that combination.
Some of the scrolls are “diaries,” which give you hints.
Glad I got this hint because I would have thought this was bad.
Something weird happened with my strength. For a long time, it was stuck at 18.99, and I figured that was the highest, but at some point it rolled over to 19-something and has been continuing to grow towards 20 ever since.
At some point, I acquired the “Psi Blast” power. I have no idea when it happened or why. It doesn’t seem to do very much damage.
When I hit Level 20, I got the “Fletching” skill, which allows me to make arrows out of woods. Since “Terraforming” allows me to turn any square into woods, I basically have all the arrows I want. Anyway, I took the game’s offer to change classes and changed to a conjurer. I spent 20 levels as a conjurer, skipping the first offer to change, because I hardly gained any spells. Even after 20 levels, I can only cast “Set Recall” (which only helps if you have a Scroll of Recall), “Reflect,” “Draw Life,” and “Illusory Self.”
Casting spells. I thought I’d have cooler spells.
At Level 40, I changed to a blacksmith. Somewhere along the way, I read a couple of Scrolls of Knowledge and obtained the “Fennling” skill, an extremely useful skill that lets you combine the charges of two wands of the same type. I also got “Relocation,” which lets me teleport on demand, “Ironworking,” and “Taming.” I haven’t really experimented yet with the latter two.
When I was done exploring, I went back to the Temple of Vidur. He still killed me instantly, but this time I had one new item: a Wand of Death. It only had two charges, but one of them took care of Vidur nicely (unfortunately, not before he killed my new companion, whose release so enraged Vidur in the first place). Gungnir was on his body, and apparently I’m too weak to wield it.
The first god falls.
I headed back to the surface and found the forest absolutely swarming with monsters. They’re low level, and no danger, but they’re so thick that I can barely move. Thankfully, my teleportation abilities get me through. They seem to respawn as fast as I kill them. I wondered if Ragnarok had started while I was in the dungeon or whether carrying Gungnir brings the to me.
My reputation must have taken a hit while I was underground.
While I was in the forest, I happened to note an icon I hadn’t seen before. I (L)ooked at it and the game told me it was Thokk, the giantess who refused to cry for Baldur, meaning I’d have to bring her soul to Hela to get Baldur out of hell. I slipped on my Ring of Soul Trapping and killed her with a single blow. I made the mistake of not taking off the ring afterwards, and her soul was immediately replaced by the new slain enemies’. That required me to reload a significantly older game and replay Vidur’s temple again. The second time, I found Thokk in the same area and took off the ring after capturing her soul.
Part of one quest down!
Lacking guidance on exactly where to go, I escaped the monster hoard by jumping through a portal. It took me to Slaeter’s Sea and some other outdoor maps that kind of wrap around the opening forest, including the River Vid and the River Gioll. I can just stroll across the water because I have Skidbladnir (the magic boat) in my pocket.
The River Vid is mostly water.
I soon found out that if you go the wrong way out of these areas, you wind up in the open ocean and you immediately get attacked by Jormungand. The first time I found him, he damaged me for -60302 hit points. (I had a maximum of 452 at the time.) I tried the Wand of Death on him but it didn’t work. He’s also inescapable. I suspect you’re just not meant to go into these areas.
I suppose if I could kill Jormungand, I wouldn’t need to do anything else.
But there’s an enemy that roams the rivers and lakes of this “outer rim” that’s almost as deadly as Jormungand: the lorkesth. He gets like 5 attacks per round and does massive damage. He’s the reason I can’t just blithely stroll through the areas (the other enemies are relatively easy at my level). I have to watch very carefully for their appearance and use my teleportation ability to get to a safe square of land. There’s no outrunning them, since they can move three times for every move I make. If I stand one square away from the water, I can defeat them with throwing weapons and wands, but like any monster they may auto-generate at any time. If I get another Scroll of Extinction, they’re going to be strong candidates.
I like to think I’m skipping these shurikens along the water.
To the west, the world ended at the Bifrost. (Which I have been unable to take seriously since I discovered it’s properly pronounced “beef roast,” although I think it’s cool that the Norse conceived it as a rainbow. So many things in mythology are dark and dreary.) I figured it was too soon to go to Asgard, so I went the other way. Mapping in this game is complicated; I’ll explain more thoroughly in my next entry. Suffice to say that the particular section of maps I was in ended to the west at the Bifrost and east at the River Gioll. The Gioll map had some patches covered in fog and a river swarming with lorkesths, but oddly no other enemies or items on the map. For some reason, my Ring of Locus Mastery doesn’t work, meaning when I teleport, I just teleport to a random place. Something is also causing me to teleport frequently even if I take off my Ring of Relocation.
In the middle of a patch of fog on the east side, I ran into a character named Harbard. He was rooted in place and didn’t pursue me, but if I walked up to him, he killed me in a couple of blows. So I stood a couple squares away from him and hit him with the second and last charge in my Wand of Death. His body disappeared in the fog, but when I walked and stood upon it, the game told me that there was a staircase. Taking it led me to Niflheim.
Hell looks a lot like Maine in April.
I immediately had one of those moments that I described in the opening. I had been killing fire dragons and frost dragons in single blows, so I wasn’t bothered by the “hel dragon” heading in my direction–not, at least, before he killed me in one attack that left me with -1,006 hit points.
My brief foray into hell.
Upon reloading, I tried again, taking pains to avoid the dragon, and I did come across some luck when I stumbled on a Wand of Wishing with three charges. I immediately wished for another Wand of Death, and while it worked fine against the next hel dragon, it did nothing against the unique enemies of the area, including Konr Rig and Plog. I reluctantly returned to the surface and decided to try again when I was stronger, although given the fact that I’ve already maxed in most of the game’s classes and I have incredibly powerful equipment and near-max strength (I assume, since it’s now going up by decimals instead of integers), I don’t know what “stronger” is going to look like.
Still, I moved north from the River Gioll to what turned out to be the mountainous realm of Jotenheim. I expected to meet a lot of giants but mostly found the same creatures from previous areas, including a lot of faleryns, who fortunately didn’t seem to be as interested as replicating as they were in the dungeon. Teleport control still doesn’t work, which makes it hard to explore systematically.
The transition to Jotenheim.
After I cleared most of the map, there remained an impenetrable rectangle of mountains and trees. Figuring it must hold something interesting, I used my “Terraforming” ability to change a tree into regular ground. Inside the rectangle was a small building populated by a large foe named Gymir. He had the decency not to kill me in a single blow, but his attacks were capable of doing more than 100 damage each. I quaffed a Potion of Speed and a Potion of Curing and proceeded to kill him in legitimate combat. He left behind Mimming, Freyr’s sword. I’m too weak to wield it.
My character doesn’t just chop down trees; he changes the very nature of the landscape.
Jotenheim continued for two maps to the north. To the north of that was “Mimer’s Realm,” a map of mountains, lava pools, and fog. A new monster called “iridorns” were introduced. They can kill in a single hit by ripping off your head, although they die pretty easily if you can strike them first. With Mimer’s Realm, I found Mimer’s Well, mentioned in the backstory as the residence of the serpent Aspenth, the transformed version of Gjall, Heimdall’s horn. But I need the “Swimming” ability to navigate there and I don’t have it yet.
My character at the end of this session.
At some point, while exploring Jotenheim, Heimdall’s voice bellowed from the sky:
O great heroes of the world! I must have Gjall to rally the forces of good. Time begins to grow short. The sea rages with the anger of Jormungand. The earth quakes mightily. Loki seems ready to burst his bonds. The moon and sun shall soon be swallowed by the mighty wolves Fenrir and Garm. Surtr is honing his sword of destruction. The evil ones are gathering their forces.
To speed you in your quest, I will use my powers over nature. The lesser creatures of the realm shall grow weary and despair. They shall no longer wish to battle against your might.
This announcement suggests the game has a time limit (and also that Heimdall just removed my ability to easily grind). I’m going to explore to the north a little further, but if nothing pans out, I’ll use my Wand of Wishes for Scrolls of Knowledge and see if I can pick up the swimming ability. At this point, I have three of the six quest items. If I can get one more, it might be worth heading to Asgard.
Time so far: 15 hours
*****
B.A.T. II: The Koshan Conspiracy was going to be next, but I’m not sure how it got on my list in the first place. None of my sources call it an RPG, not even a hybrid. I can’t find evidence that any commenter defended it as an RPG. I’m dumping it unless someone can make a persuasive case. The Adventure Gamer already covered it if you really need to read about it.
That means we get to our first random roll for the next game on the list! Pulling up the list, adding a “Random” column, filtering out games I’ve already played or rejected, we get . . . Xenus II: White Gold (2008). But of course I’m not going to play a game before its predecessor, which in this case is Boiling Point: Road to Hell (2005). That’s also the first game on my list from Ukraine. I can’t find mention of any other necessary precursors. But I’m just kidding because I’m not going to let myself jump that far ahead in one go. The actual next game needs to be in the next year I have not yet played, and a random selection from that year brings us to Shadowkeep 1: The Search by the same author as the Bandor series. Meanwhile, Planet’s Edge gets moved up a notch to Game 358, but I’m having trouble with that one. DOSBox crashes every time I try to leave the intro screen. So the real next game might be Ishar while I try to solve that problem.
