Wyverns among the ruins!
I painted this spread in my etchr watercolour sketchbook - landscape A4 size is so much delicious space to fill!
Drawn in light blue colerase, inked with platinum carbon ink in a M nib platinum fountain pen, painted with raw sienna, burnt umber, ultramarine violet, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, and strategically placed tiny amounts of permanent yellow light and quinacridone magenta watercolours. Stars added with white uniball gel pens.
I was inspired by all the fun poses this lego dragon could do!
A few process shots, for the road:

cam I get all the kinds of reds you feel like answering?
shakhnazaryan red; are you currently binge-watching anything?
I suppose by one definition whatever I've got on TV is a binge watch bc I'll just put on a show and let it run for hours while I wander in and out of the room doing Endreal things. I like to call it 'putting something on for the boys' (the boys are our cats)
red ochre; are you more right-brained (creative) or left-brained (analytical)?
My friend, I am a corpus callosum kinda guy
english red; what animal do you relate to most?
Gremlin, obvs! Idk it varies from day to day but probably most likely either a spoilt housecat (orange) or an excitable medium sized dog (possibly a retriever or terrier).
vermilion; what’s your favorite accent?
Right now hands-down unapologetically my partner's. I love just listening to them.
cadmium red; do you have a “type” when it comes to a significant other?
Based solely on jokes that have been made about me/at me in the past 48 hours alone the answer would be something like welders, poets, Midwesterners, Belgians, musicians, groups of musicians, and people with great shoulders
scarlet; describe your current crush/es.
Utter gaddamn nerds, the lot of 'em <3
ruby; what does your ideal first date look like?
Oh, hmm, good question! I know this may be hard to believe but I don't go on first dates very often? I guess meeting up somewhere and doing a fun casual low-impact sort of thing? Like an outdoor art museum or walking around looking for landmark/historical plaques downtown or something. Maybe a stop at café for snacks or drinks if we're out long enough to need it
carmine; what does your ideal second date look like?
(don't make a uhaul joke don't make a uhaul joke don't make a uhaul joke don't make a) oh man this one is WAY harder! Hmm, I guess similar to the first one but make it nature-y? Park walking, hiking trail, afternoon adventure at the sea (if it's close enough), paddling in streams? (don't forget to stay hydrated and wear appropriate protection from the sun!)
madder lake red; would you ever kiss someone (or accept a kiss) on a first date?
I can't think of any reason why not, unless I just really didn't click with the person!
rose; what’s something really positive going on in your life right now?
I've had time and space in my life for writing again recently. Is it what I expected to be writing? No. But I am, in fact, doing it!
quinacridone rose; what’s something you’re really looking forward to?
Tuesday gremlin time (that's today!). Also in a couple weeks I'm taking my spouse down to the island for his birthday and he's been trying to play it cool but honesty it's starting to slip how excited he's getting about it
violet rose; what does your dream house look like?
Any place that's safe and comfortable, but I think I'd love it if it's got a big covered porch and ceiling fans. (these may be very American sensibilities but as an American I think they're very sensible ones!)

World Watercolour Month '21 - part 1
Schmincke Horadam - Ocean Grey
Another multi-pigment paint (though limited edition), that includes PG50, which one finds in cobalt colours, so don't lick it. Oh boy the PBK6 settles out. Lovely. Swatching Ocean Grey.
Renesans - Ultramarine Green. There's a technique in watercolour called beading that one employs to dramatically increase the chances of a smooth wash. I've only ever tried it on paper, so today I gave it a go on yupo. The nice thing about yupo is that paint doesn't cauliflower on it. There are some other drying peculiarities, but that's for another day. This came out a touch streaky, but still pretty good.
Who needs art when you can simply not clean up after yourself? That surface, by the by, is a glass whiteboard that covers two thirds of the top of my desk.
it's easy to be green.
Beam - Spring Green
Isaro Green Light
Van Gogh - Permanent Yellow Green
Rembrandt - Cobalt Green
Rembrandt - Emerald Green
Schmincke - Cobalt Green Dark
Finetec mica paints. All shiny!
Blue Silver
Mystic
Caribbean Green
High Chroma Blue
Orange Copper
Tangelo
QOR - YInMn Blue, also known as Oregon Blue or Mas Blue, was discovered by accident at Oregon State University and is the first inorganic blue pigment created in about 200 years. There's a TED talk by one of its discoverers.
Beam - Mayan Indigo Gold. Another awesomely sedimenting colour. Wet on the right, and what happens when you let it settle and dry on its own, on the left.
Van Gogh - Bronze, Copper
St Petersberg White Nights - Copper, Bronze
Beam - Mayan Rose Gold
Schmincke Horadam - Caput Mortuum. Probably the most movingest paint I have. The name does mean dead head. Colours like this used to me made of ground up mummy.
Schmincke Horadam - Tundra Violet. One of their new multi-pigment super granulating colours that separates into its components in very interesting and unpredictable ways.
Daniel Smith's - Serpentine Genuine. Another lovely example of a paint that can separate. Such a lovely warm green with rusty bits.
Rose of Ultramarine - This is the Daniel Smith version. The fun of multi-pigment paints is, for me, putting them on super wet paper and watching how they separate into their component parts as they dry. Again, an overcast day day, so this isn't presenting at its best.
New paints just got delivered day.
Winsor Newton - Brown Madder
Van Gogh - Copper, Bronze, Dusk Violet, Dusk Pink
Schmincke - May Green, Indigo, Burnt Sienna
Sadly, a rainy day, so none of the helpful beauty of natural sunlight.
How grey thou art.
Opus - Davy's Grey
Sennelier - Sennelier Grey
M. Graham - Yellow Grey
St. Petersburg/White Nights - Marengo
Roman Szmal - Misty Morning
It's interesting not only how some move more than others, but also how differently they can move.
Painting it black.
Turner - Neutral Tint
Holbein - Peach Black
Stoneground - Roman Black
Renesans - Przybysz Black
According to my Polish source, przybysz means something along the lines of to arrive, arrive, new arrival.
The exciting world of … beige. From left to right, top to bottom:
QOR - Titanium Buff
St Petersburg/White Nights - Dunes
Daniel Smith - Titanium Buff
Turner - Clove
Titanium Buff is actually a really awesome colour as a partner to things like Indigo or Aussie Red Gold, and is great as a bed to drop other colours into.
What's in my browns/reds collection - left to right, top row down. Some of those things really move.
Winsor Newton (WN) - Rose Maddee Genuine
Schmincke Horadam (SCH) - Galaxy Brown
WN - VanDyke Brown
St Petersburg White Nights (SPWN) - Mocha
M. Graham (MG) - Terra Rosa
WN - Potters Pink
Rembrandt (REM) - Burnt Sienna
Turner (T) - Charcoal
Renesans (RNS) - Polish Brown
MG - Transparent Red Iron Oxide
Van Gogh (VG) - Raw Umber
Beam (B) - Bread
REM - Indian Red
Daniel Smith (DS) - Quinacridone Coral
WN - Winsor Red Deep
T - Cinnabar
DS - Sepia
Stoneground (SG) -Burnt Sienna Crimson
RNS - Green Brown
RNS - Raw Kassel
RNS - Monaco Bordeaux
RNS - Dragon's Blood
Sennelier (SEN) - Sennelier Brown
SG - Same as above, forgot I had two
WN - Rose Dore
REM - Light Oxide Red
The paint I forgot I ordered from Jackson's in the UK that just arrived: M. Graham's Azo Green. Because you can see I'm low on green paint. I needed more.
My oranges from left to right:
St. Petersburg / White Nights - Peach
Jacksons - Cadmium Yellow Orange
Winsor Newton - Winsor Orange
Rembrandt - Cadmium Orange

AND ANOTHER THING, as a watercolorist, I don't think Semple fully understands watercolors, watercolorists, and watercolor pigments? When his art supply company made their gold metallic paint, they had this checkbox (like the anish kapoor checkbox) about making sure the paint never makes it into the hands of "Daniel Smith" but like... "Daniel Smith" is not a person it's a company, and the reason why Quinacridone Gold was exclusive to them is that the pigment had already been discontinued in 1995 when they bought up a warehouse full of it. Other manufacuturers had their Quin gold supply run out around 2005, whereas Daniel Smith had theirs until 2017 (they could've kept it longer if they weren't using it in other paint formulations like cascade green and quinacridone sienna).
Now Daniel Smith is a little sketchy, a couple years ago a geologist and paint enthusiast found under microscope that their "primatek" watercolors made from supposed genuine precious stones were adulterated with modern synthetics (amazonite had phthalo green in it, purpurite was actually made of the chemically identical but non-crystalline manganese violet, etc.) but again. Not about that, it's about Semple selling a narrative to bolster his brand
Not gonna lie I did fall for the pinkest pink story, I heard about it from Tom Scott, but that was six years ago and you'd think he'd have let it go by now...

#80. Using One Strong Element to Establish Space. The Big Book of Painting Nature in Oil. Oil. December 26, 2023.
Back to the lesson book.
One up: Overall this came out nicely. Considering how bad my first backlit trees were this shows lots of improvement.
One improve: Trust the process. Painting out negative space from the trees goes through a real ugly phase and I almost called this one quits. Not quite happy with the orange foreground, needs better connection to the rest of the painting.
Colors: titanium white, cadmium orange and yellow light, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna, quinacridone red, phthalo blue to make Mars violet.
