You know, the more I think about it, the more I really respect that Aabria basically went, "y'all I know it's a ten episode season and we did good, but we could do better. Let's add an 11th episode," and not only did that happen, but we got a pretty damn satisfying wrap-up. D20 GMs should do that more often

what an episode
wHAT AN EPISODE
i truly could not sum up my emotions without rewatching the whole thing and writing up a play by play this was so unhinged
how we managed to have some of the funniest shit, so quickly followed by actual pure horror. i do not know how aabria does this time and time again. i bow to thee. your murder justification island? insane. and rest in piss boudy boots, its what you deserve. thinking evan kelmps death/resurrection would be some of the darkest points we'd reach in a (seemingly) non horror season? that was a fuck up on my part
overall what a banger of an episode. props to all our magical misfits as ever for playing some incredibly fun, complex, sometimes batshit characters that can dip into so many different vibes. its a lot of fun and im so glad we got this season

*shouldering off someone trying to hold me back* no, you see, the thing about sam is—stop it, man, give me a second—because she—dude LET ME—it’s about how danielle describes sam’s mental state as “if i keep smiling everything will be okay” and “i’ll fix it i’ll fix it i’ll fix it” and how she was so careful with the qhoyle because she knows how stories work and how wishes work and she was so desperate to save her friends and gave up a scene of introspection for her own self to save evan’s soul, did we all collectively forget that—and how she manages to charm people around her simply by being a pleasant person who likes to listen and smile and be kind, who approaches almost every conversation with a lack of guile and an expectation of the same in return—and how she has to work so hard to get people to take her seriously and understand her genuineness and kindness are not an act or a facade—and how when she does choose to lower her voice and be stern she DOES wield power and the people who love her the most understand that and even stand in the crosshairs of it if necessary—it’s about how her first thought when presented with the option was to preserve her friends’ free will over all else and ‘if they really wanted to, they’d do it on their own without having to magic about it’ and once again passing up on an opportunity to learn about herself and her magic to protect her friends—it’s about how i’ve never had the opportunity for success like sam britain/black, but i have so frequently had friends and family tell me they admire me for how outgoing i am and i can see that girl i was (and still am) in my early twenties, smiling through everything and offering solutions and pretending not to hear it when people say things about me but WHIPPING my head around if they said something about my friend—it’s about how danielle lies to you as a player and a performer and presents sam as simple and sweet when she is, in actuality, one of the most complex characters at the table—

OK, so. Evan was given the book by the Qhoyle. This could be seen as the Qhoyle choosing him, but I think it's deeper than that. It is the Qhoyle trusting him to choose. The book is tied strongly to the concept of magic, and there are two places that interact with that concept directly (instead of, say, using/shaping it): The Weugan (amplification) and the Tadershacourt (nullification).
Evan says himself, on the island of Weugan, that it is the place wizards seek. Amplification is the bane of wizards, and something deep within him yearns for this sort of power. He makes the choice, there, to protect the world from the knowledge present in the book. He hides it away and, while he is still in control, gives his friends the instruction not to allow it back into his hands. I firmly believe he could have been chosen by the island of amplification, and if he had, he would have become as the wizards of old. And Qhoyle gave him this opportunity.
Instead, he chose to open the book on the island of nullification. To use the nature of the place to act as a shield between secrets and the world. To insert a shield between the parts of him that want, desperately, amplification, and the parts of him that care, desperately, for a safe world. He is chosen by the Tadershacourt not only because he spoke, not only because he is a protector, but because he made the choice to access the book of the Qhoyle here, and not there. The book was a test that led him to his place of choosing. He chose, so it chose.
I love that aspect that arises so often in these stories. That it is not fate or destiny or even trope that pulls the character, but choices. What a beautiful, hopeful way to see the world.

Am I the only one who reads Evan as jealous toward the Qhoyle? That was the same “come at me” energy he had with Jammer and T2 when dog-brained… maybe I’m too ship-brained like K but come on guys!

heartwrenching mismag ep last night but i gotta be honest jammer’s interaction with the qhoyle is the thing that made me actually truly cry. how i can be everything that i feel everyone needs me to be and still be me. how can i balance what i want with what i think i should do. you can’t. but that’s okay.

Still need to talk abt this fully
Evan being the one to die, in front of everyone, was also so important. Not that I think the reaction would've been too different.
But it was Evan, the guy that has been the kicked dog to the point that he (literally) will kick himself because he thinks that that is his place. And the rest of the pilot programme knew that he saw himself that way.
And not even to mention the reactions. Jammer trying to focus on the task that they needed to complete to get Evan back, and after Lou spoke about how jammer doesn't let his emotions control him because he's got other shit to focus on (taking 30 seconds to cry then getting right back to the task) and despite the things he said to everyone around him came out harsh it was probably because that was the only way he could keep it together (getting straight to the point where every question he asked and wanting the same as a response). Sam's denial at his death, her denial that her magic wouldn't work and desperately looking to Fergus to try it instead, her having to ask Evan not to kick his own body because despite his soul being a shadow it was still the body she was talking about how to handle seeing your ex mere minutes ago.
And K, oh K. I said it in the tags but their need to fix everything is the perfect flaw, and they know that it is (they asked the qhoyle how to do that exact thing). They broke their wand in character over the guilt and stress, they couldn't look at Evan's shadow, in an attempt to "fix" their Ex they killed him instead, because they have to/want to be the person that does it. Even outside of Evan, they wanna be the one that fixes everything but in turn don't think that there will be any consequences because maybe if their intentions are good enough everything will work out perfectly.
This post turned out way linger than I thought it would. Honorable mentions: each of them basically showed different stages of grief; K denial, jammer anger, Sam bargaining and Evan acceptance (relief, even). The fact that they were struck with such grief so quickly and completely out of nowhere really makes the entire thing even more tragic. And Evan Kelmp my beloved I need you to learn that you do deserve to live and enjoy life and that people will love you outside of needing you to be useful.
Oh evan dying because of K is so pivotal to every character actually

Evan's beef with the Qholye = INT smart vs. WIS smart, knowing vs. understanding.
"You gave me an answer but won't explain why it's bad/unsatisfying and that's withholding" vs. "You clever-ed your way into getting the answers at the back of the book and now are mad at me that you didn't learn how to actually solve the problem"

She wants people to see her TRUE self. I’m thinking the Qhoyle will help her with that
sure sam could become the avatar of seeganpeleter yeah okay
but sam doesn't want to mind control people
she doesn't want to be the best wizard in the world
she just wants to be sam
