A Day of Demonic Babysitting
(Bill Cipher x OC)
Synopsis: When Maeloraelis takes a break for a girl's night out, Bill Cipher is left to care for their mischievous baby, Elara. Confident at first, Bill quickly realizes that keeping up with his chaotic daughter is more exhausting than expected.
Tumblr media
It all started with a simple goodbye.
Mae had kissed Bill on the cheek (or where a cheek would be, if he had one), gave Elara a loving pat, and then floated towards the door. She was glowing with excitement—girl's night out was a rare treat, especially since Elara had been born. “Now, Bill,” Mae called back, her voice taking on that affectionate-yet-firm tone she knew he couldn’t resist. “Remember, if anything happens to our little bundle of chaos, you won’t be getting any rewards tonight.” She added a playful flutter of her eye.
Bill, lounging in his usual flamboyant style, tipped his hat with a smirk. “Oh, you know me, doll! I've got this! What could possibly go wrong?”
Mae gave him one last knowing look, her stone bowtie glowing with a mischievous pink and a tinge of orange, before disappearing out the door.
Bill, alone with his daughter for the first time without Mae, turned to face Elara. The tiny triangle floated in mid-air, her bright eye blinking curiously up at him, her light purple body shimmering like a mischievous little star. “Alright, kiddo,” he grinned. “It’s you and me today! Let’s have some fun, hmm?”
At first, Bill found it amusing as Elara began to bounce around, throwing harmless but flashy sparks of chaotic energy across the room. “That’s right, chip off the ol’ block!” he cheered, crossing his arms and leaning back, basking in paternal pride.
But things took a turn when Elara zoomed off like a tiny comet, leaving a trail of glittery havoc behind her. She knocked over a stack of ancient books, sending them flying in all directions, and somehow managed to twist a whole chandelier until it spun wildly like a top. “Woah there, speed demon!” Bill chuckled, floating after her at a casual pace. But when she zoomed into the next room, he had to quicken his pace. “Okay, okay, let’s not break everything in the first ten minutes, alright?”
Elara was a blur, darting around the room like a living lightning bolt. Bill’s grin faltered for the first time as he watched her zoom up the walls, bounce off the ceiling, and start tearing through one of his interdimensional maps. “Alright, sweetheart, that’s—uh—those are…kinda important.”
When she zoomed by him for the fiftieth time, giggling in her high-pitched, adorable baby squeals, he blinked. “How… how are you this fast?”
He reached out to grab her, but she slipped through his fingers like smoke. Now she was on the chandelier again, spinning it faster and faster until it creaked ominously. “Elara, sweetie, let’s… let’s calm down, okay?” he urged, a touch of nervousness sneaking into his voice. But his little troublemaker wasn’t having any of it. She started babbling happily, her eye twinkling with pure delight.
Bill tried to zap a portal to trap her, but she was too quick, darting around it like a pro. “Alright, that’s… impressive,” he muttered, half-proud, half-exasperated.
As the hours ticked by, Elara showed no signs of slowing down. Bill, however, found himself on the back foot. He had stopped counting how many times she had teleported, shifted objects, or made things randomly levitate. He started to sweat… well, if triangles could sweat. His energy, usually boundless, was feeling oddly depleted.
At one point, he was holding her in the air, her entire body vibrating with energy. She was moving so fast she was practically a blur. "C'mon, kid, how about a nap?" he suggested, his voice a mix of coaxing and desperation.
Elara just giggled louder, her form twisting and turning in his grasp.
Bill floated down to the couch, exhausted, and cradled her closer. “How does your mom handle this every day?” he wondered aloud. A part of him was genuinely baffled, but another part was swelling with pride. He thought about how Mae managed to balance their family life with his chaotic ambitions. How she kept everything together without ever breaking a sweat. “Man, I married a powerhouse,” he muttered to himself, a grin spreading across his features.
Elara finally started to slow down, her energy waning. She gave a tiny yawn, her eye blinking sleepily. Bill rocked her gently, humming a tune that, if anyone else heard, might’ve sounded like an ancient summoning chant, but it seemed to work. Slowly, his little chaos demon drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
Bill let out a sigh of relief, leaning back into the couch. “Finally…”
Just then, Mae arrived home. She stepped inside and her eye widened at the scene. The house was a mess—papers scattered everywhere, objects hovering mid-air, and even a fish swimming through the air. But she couldn't bring herself to be mad. There, on the couch, was Bill, asleep with baby Elara snuggled against him, both looking utterly content.
Mae floated over, her expression softening. She gently fixed a few things with a flick of her finger, but her main focus was on her two favorite troublemakers. "Guess you survived," she whispered, leaning down to place a kiss on Bill's forehead. “Just barely,” he murmured, eyes still closed but with a small smile. “But hey… she's a lot like me.”
Mae chuckled softly. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Bill opened his eye slightly, looking up at her with a mixture of admiration and exhaustion. "You’re amazing, you know that?”
Mae smiled, her bowtie’s stone glowing a gentle pink. “I know.”
As Mae settled down beside them, Bill felt a rush of warmth. Maybe being a dad wasn't so bad… especially when the chaos felt like home.

💓 Astro Notes PT 3 ! 💓
+I’m definitelyy gonna do sign posts soon, like houses, planets, asteroids, and all, it’s all gonna have a theme to each topic yada yada yadaa, so look outtt+
>A bit of a long post here so have fun scrolling through it hehe :))
*All aries risings have sign/house synchronization because the house order doesn’t move or if it does move at all it hardly does, only shifting by a sign or two depending on how late the ascendant degree is, this is notorious of aries’ independence streak by wanting each sign to be in their native houses, to feel its house’s full power, aries rules 1st the house of identity so there’s the more symbolic way for this occurring. It’s pure energy here.
*Venus-saturn, especially conjunction, definitely carry a big daddy vibe. It’s more prominent if the two are placed in the angular houses.
*Taurus and libra are both rules by venus, but these energies are distributed between the two signs in different ways. A basic way to differ the two energy wise is taurus is the “masculine” side of venus, libra is far more “feminine”. Both are delicate but in different ways taurus is “heavier”, for it being an earth sign, contrasted with the airy and flighty libra.
*Libra sun is in fall in astrology, the fall meaning the behavior of the sign contradicts the traditional role of the planet, the role of the sun is to stand out from everyone else, its your radiance, what makes you special, it’s your ego and what you take pride in. But libra wants to be relatable to everyone, to NOT stand out, merge and meet and balance !! This is the opposite of aries, aries is independent, “what makes ME independent, me me me !!”, explaining its exaltation when the sun enters this sign, it’s not absolutely the same as leo sun or the suns energy overall but it’s a close fit, almost... perfect, that’s what the exaltation means represents here. Libra is focused on everyone else around them, everyone other than themselves, the people around them and how they can compromise to fit everyone’s needs. I mentioned before they don’t like to stand out, this is excluding fire placements in a libras chart which will create a person who relates well to others but still demands to stand out in whatever planet is in a fire sign.
*Whatever house leo is ruling is wherever your rising sign’s ego is being expressed in, ex: leo in 11th expresses their ego, creativity with friends, causes. This area of life is where you’ll likely take most pride in, excluding the suns placement in the chart.
*Neptune in 7th can attract a lot of partners in need of healing or help. This person is very healing and guiding in relationships, maybe they could even make a good guidance counselor, but I’m not so sure astrologically because I haven’t looked into it entirely, let me know if this is true.
*Neptune in 2nd is the type of person to browse a shop, find whatever they like but never end up buying it, they change their minds about it by putting it back right before they leave. They could’ve been talking about hooow much they want to get whatever they’re holding onto over and over again but never buy the thinggg.
*Aries mercury were always told to lower their voice or be quiet as kids I swear.
*Uranus in 12th feels they should hide their brilliance, these are veryy creative people they just keep it a secret.
*12th house feels like a never ending game of hide and seek, you find the planet sometimes but you’re always in a never ending loop, always searching for it.
*The moon in astrology, when looking into the mother, who’s ruled by the moon in astrology, describes your relationship with her, what she’s like, how she raised you etc...
*Ex: taurus moons, your mother gave you many gifts, she adored youu as taurus is ruled venus which rules gifts and appreciation, she was also very relaxed in your childhood, she still is now. This relationship is a very calm, steady one, moon is exalted in taurus meaning the role of the moon is comfortable in relaxed and comfy taurus.
*Ex: a moon in 8th, the house of intense and psychic scorpio, could have a psychic or even telepathic bond to the mother, this is a very strong connection overall and depending on its sign and aspects is where you’ll find the specifics of the relationship from, the details, how the relationship is flavored.
*Sun in 12th indicates an absent father figure. This placement is difficult, i’m so sorry if you have it because you can never feel like you can be yourself, it’s hidden from you. With any other placement in astrology, there’s a gorgeous, forgiving upside to it, you’re very healing and understanding of others, an empath or at least someone who sucks in the negative vibes out the environment, it can get quite exhausting !! so always need to seclude yourself now and then, you’re very loyal and caring of your loved ones, people love you for your sensitivity and empathy as this placement also makes you an old soul, someone overflowing with wisdom others rely on.
*5th house shows you what your child will be like, what traits they embody, what they will do and even how they act.
*Capricorn risings look elvish, they have high cheekbones a lot like a LOTR character and elvish, chiseled ears. It’s not OUT there but it’s subtle.
*Chiron in 9th has experienced religious trauma.
*A lot of 12th or 8th house placements carry a lot of karma.
*Mercury-pluto (especially negative) can become inconsiderate in arguments, they bring up a ton of shit to use against you, only as long as they can win.
*Scorpio suns are far more optimistic and light hearted than the moon sign.
*Mercury-ascendant aspects can make even an introverted rising sign more out-going, open, talkative (not that introverted risings can’t be talkative this is just what comes with this placement).
*You may be good at something without realizing it, take a peak at your 12th house or quintiles !! For quintiles, look up the trine form of whatever two planets are aspected for the general description since there’s not too much to find online sadly. 12th house is something you don’t really know or realize you’re good at, especially early in life, the secret talent pertaining to whichever sign or planet are ruling/in this house.
*Leo venus take pride in their loverss like damnnnn they literally treat their partners as royalty, king and queen, kissing the ground they walk on and everything, they’re so devoted in love, it’s adorable !! <33
*Pisces and leo moons, THE dreamiest, most romantic moon sign pairr, it’s well known pisces is the hopeless romantic of the zodiac, however to bring up the flamboyant, dramatic leo moon when describing a dreamy romantic you wonder, really ?? Yes this is extremely true ! Both signs, pisces and leo, are fairly alike, almost alike in fact, considering they both create a inconjunction in the natal chart, two signs who share some similarities while still contradicting one another in ways they express these similarities, both pisces and leo are creative, talented, have a love for the arts, film, music, loyal as friends and love to care for others, both are insanely idealistic. Leo rules the child remember !! so they’re a childlike sign with young idealism, an idealistic moon sign here. Both leo and pisces moons are children at heart, they’re so gooey and sweet.
*Sun in 10th can get any job they apply for, they could even be terrible at that job they want, the one they want to try out for, they would even have a breakdown over how terrible they were in an interview but still get the job like HOWW- WITCHCRAFTT.
*Aquarius mercuries were known as the smartest kid in class, the einstein’s of the class, everyone asked for their answers for the homework, they just carry this flair of intellectual superiority just like the sun sign haha.
*Your 12th house is what you unconsciously give off the vibe of, your ascendant and midheaven are noticeable layers, different types of layers of you !!but the subtle layers of the 12th house, sign or planet, can always be sensed unconsciously, 12th house energies are at a higher octave, a higher vibration than the other houses, even 11th, you can notice a person’s subtle 12th house energy but they’re still completely unaware of it as it’s ! hidden ! from them.
*Aquarius venus, and really all air venuses in general, are soo stereotyped UGHH, what I mean by stereotyped is the descriptions of each of these venus signs is literally like the same shit over and overrr again, they all get terrible reps in the astro community it seems almost close minded because it’s also such a hugee generalization. It’s only about how the air venus energy is used, manifested in the person, if its underdeveloped or not. If it’s underdeveloped it’s going to be chaotically afloat from material love affairs, which earth venuses don’ttt like, water too, fire can handle the floaty-ness but if the passion’s not there- BYE !! If you develop an air venus well enough, you can balance the material and intellectual realms in your relationships, this is kinda natural for earth heavy charts with one the air signs here, however fire or even more air could become a little tricky to ground yourself in relationships. Just let your partners know you deserve your space because you guys can really run out of mental power after a while, so it’s necessary for you to recharge !! just don’t ghost people completely when you do, it’s where this immortal stereotype comes from.
*Saturn dominant people are flawless beings.
*Saturn in 3rd, YOU GUYS ARE SOOOSOO SOOO SMART AHH. Their minds are always running at a fast pace like literal lightning, or they become too overwhelming (not in a bad sense ofcc, it’s just how it is) that the person’s speech rhythm is kinda forgotten about in a way, it feels like that their mouths aren’t always running in sync. The thought they’re going to express into words should come out but it’s so quick or even “heavy” it jumbles up a sentence or it causes the person to mix up a word or two. Their minds are fast fast fastt but they feel like their mouths are running in literal slow motion. There’s nothing wrong with this, this placement makes amazingly smart peoplee. Just relax, try letting yourself go in conversation, let all that big, brain energy freee !!
*Alsoo, as singers they would and definitely ALWAYSS get their notes right, they have actual PERFECT voices, they really should become writers or, like I said, singing would be perfect for them because they would never mess up lmaoo.
*Libra, computerized concern and sympathy...
*Pluto in 8th feel unbeatable, indestructible almost, they have above average regenerative abilities, they have the best survival tactics but they keep it a secret, it’s 8th house we’re talking about.
*Whatever saturn is in is the area where you’ll become flawless in, you’ll master that area throughout your life with time.
*There is a guiding planet in astrology, the planet that is closest behind the sun, it’s considered your “second” chart ruler, or basically has the energy of it because you can probably relate to it being one of the most prominent energies in your chart.
*Sagittarius//9th house mercury is soooo blunt, so blunt. Wait did I mention they’re SOOO SO BLUNT.
*Moon in 5th need to perform, they love to get out on stage and perform with their entire hearts, they’ll do amazing in the performing arts, theatre, and honestly they probably already aree. These people are so playful and generally so fun to be around, they’re natural hypemen as well !!
*Taurus venus love to be appreciated by their partners, the gifts, the kisses, the food and allll.
*Neptune in 3rd feel everything in their environment, they can sift through the energies and vibes, it’s second nature, no not second nature, FIRST nature, they’re one with everything around them. Their minds are like a hazy, cloudy ocean containing every drop, every thought of a place, a person.
*Moon in 11th, and 10th too, have a special ability to understand and sympathize with the public, they always know what the public wants and even how to give it to them. This can easily get them famous since they’re extremely understanding people, especially if moon is healthy in the chart.
*Someone with a lot of capricorn/10th house or aquarius/11th house energy is very extroverted, they enjoy socializing with others but suffer from social burn outs often, they often need to recharge.
*Scorpio risings have intense voices, like their tone radiates throughout your head and it can feel intense overall, even when they’re speaking casually. The specific flavor or tone doesn’t matter but how it sounds overall is piercing.
*In astrology, libra rising starts the house cusps with each houses sister signs ruling each cusps ex: pisces rules 6th house, the house of virgo in astrology. Symbolically, libra wants to balance out the houses by blending the energies with the sister signs together, by with what is (house number) and how it’s done (sign on each house cusp), for balanceee !!
*Moon conjunction uranus TRANSITSS can cause literal earthquakes on earth, shocking news or something shocking or groundbreaking will happen that day either around the world and in personal, daily life. Ex: this transit happened on halloween during the blue moon, so basically no one ever trick or treats in my neighborhood, like barely anyone comes out i mean, it’s always 5 houses apart where people typically hand out candy, some people are just hanging out, we always run out of houses to go to since it’s not very active, but this year EVERYONE was out trick or treating it was so crazy to see so many people out, it was quite literally shocking because that actually never happens also there’s a whole pandemic going on too lmaooo.

Adrien’s Best to Least
Marinette, Alya, Nino, Kagami
Alright, officially four seasons in, we got more on Adrien which wound up to be... something. Let’s get this character study going covering his best to least fit. I apologize if this comes out on the side of salty, trying to be as neutral as possible, but be ready for his issues to be addressed.
Tumblr media
Adrien is a complicated character in his set up, but Adrien himself is not a complex individual. He is, quite literally, one of the more straight forward characters in this show, and is quite stagnant and unchanging. And that is more the fault of the writers who don’t want to change him at all and deem him to be “perfect” while ignoring any flaws. Looking at him as a character without the narrative to act in his favor, there’s actually quite a struggle for him miraculous wise, but two seem to suit him best.
His best are Turtle and Peafowl. Turtle meets the core who he is, working off his strengths, where he likes to be in the field, and his instincts. And this miraculous actually offers him the growth he really needs, while keeping true to who he is. Peafowl it turn can best adjust to his style and needs, his want to be flashy and dynamic.
Adrien at the core is a protector, supporter, and follower. Being an incredibly reckless and active character, he thrives to be in the front lines, and has largely always prioritized his partner’s safety over his own, which has become problematic behavior at this point. But that’s what you want for a Turtle, someone who’s ready to be on the front lines and is being conscious of their allies. And out of the 5, this suits him best in who he is and how he works.
The growth potential comes from the limits of his protection as Shelter can only be used once, and he has to be conscious about timing and how to use it. And typically, Adrien does have good responsive instincts for when he needs to be a protector. While this won’t stop him from diving in, it can afford him more means to do so while also keeping himself safe and in the fight, and it can shape him up to be smarter in how he protects others. This miraculous also counts for self-protection and ideally can get it into his head that his safety matters to.
Overall, I do see Adrien and Wayzz getting along as Wayzz is friendly, engaging, and will adapt and adopt quirks of his humans so he can quickly bond with them. This sets up for him to click with his kwami a lot sooner, and with Wayzz being a more serious and responsible kwami than Plagg, this can set up Adrien to respect and listen to Wayzz. So when Wayzz calls him out on anything, Adrien is more likely to listen to him and consider his words. Wayzz is a kwami who doesn’t approve of reckless behavior, and that will address one of Adrien’s biggest issues.
With Peafowl, in comparison to Fox, would be a lot forgiving of Adrien’s quick, responsive, and straightforward thinking. When Adrien makes his golems, they are made with a clear purpose that they will see to. And they will function as he expects them to. This will match his want to play by his own rules, as whatever he wants can come into existence, and for sure, he’d be quite the attention grabber. This miraculous is quite flexible in battle, able to be settled on the sidelines or join the golem in combat.
Growth wise, this miraculous can inspire a spark of creativity, as while he makes golems to serve out a purpose, thought is required for them. He will also need to learn to be conscious of his resources as each golem is born from a section of his fan, and if he makes too many, he can end up weaponless.
For him and Duusu, I see them being a very energetic pair, probably borderline chaotic. Duusu would actually probably add onto his flamboyance and encourage him to really let loose and “show his true colors”. She’d also be a source of affection and support, something that he really wants. She could also have Adrien step up in maturity as she can be a goofball.
Adrien’s 2nd best is Bee. Bee can work off his energy and allow him to remain a mid-to-close-range fighter, though there are concerns to him using it which keeps this from being apart of his best, though he has enough potential and promise to use it well that keeps this from joining the worst.
Bee will have a lot of the same appeals as Cat that makes this manageable for Adrien. It is direct, involved, allows him to be a teamplayer, and has an aggressive power. But while it has the same appeals to Cat, it has the same issues as Adrien can be reckless with his power and has activated Cataclysm at the wrong time a few times which has led to issues (Aeon’s death being the most iconic example). Chances are even higher that he’d have similar issues with Venom, and be more reckless with Venom as unlike Cataclysm, this is just a temporary paralysis, not pure destruction. Cataclysm requires some level of control and consideration in use. Venom is not the same in its use, so Adrien can end up more reckless with it as there aren’t so severe consequences with it, in theory. And with his tendency to charge and Venom requires some stealth and calculation in use, chances are good that many are going to see his sting coming and prepare for it.
Growth wise, Bee can help Adrien grow as a team player, as teamwork is a big part of bee society, and while largely good, Adrien does have moments where he has struggled (like pranking his partner during a Lucky Charm use in the beginning of Refleckta, or Glaciator, rejecting to work with his partner due to her not showing up for the maybe date she said she was uncertain of making it to). And by chance he is reckless with Venom, ideally it would eventually click that he needs to be smarter in how he handles it.
Adrien and Pollen as a pair could end up very problematic or very interesting. The Bee miraculous seems more designed to be used by girls and so far, we’ve only seen Pollen work off girls, we have yet to see how Pollen would engage with a boy as her user. She could be quite critical. But playing off the assumption that Pollen will engage with Adrien the same as we’ve seen in canon with Chloe, this would not be a good match as Pollen would essentially enable Adrien, and I don’t see him prompting the same sort of growth to her as other characters could.
Adrien’s least fit are Butterfly and Fox. These two make up his greatest weaknesses: empathy and the capacity to plan before acting.
Adrien can match Butterfly as he can be very supportive and encouraging (Origins and Mayura), but the issue stems that these instances are limited both in number and in depth. Adrien can be very emotionally deaf to the needs of others, often putting his own needs over them, and has made use of guilt to manipulate people (largely Marinette, seen in Syren and Malediktator). Another big issue with Adrien and Butterfly is that Adrien himself doesn’t make connections, he doesn’t include himself in anything. To use this miraculous well, one has to be or become, quite literally, a social butterfly. This miraculous at the core is about emotion and connection, to be aware of the feelings of others, to make connections, to assist and help raise others up. It requires teamwork and being on the same page. To have the user become a leader or teammate. This is not something Adrien is known for. He in general isn’t good at getting a grasp on emotional issues, as seen in Maledicktator, not getting the happiness everyone was feeling and lectured Marientte about it. Possibilities are good that with his tendency to lecture, who can upset the wrong target and end up championless. And with how passive he can be, can it be certain that he can rein in a champion if they go out of control?
Growth wise, this does offer the most, but at the price that this is one of two that he’d really struggle with at the start. This miraculous can help him learn to branch out, make connections with others, and open his world more to making friends. But until he gets to that point, he’s going to be limited in diversity in champions and is more likely to stick to who he knows, and unfortunately, that’s not a lot. Chances are good that Chloe and Nino could be the only champions to be seen for a while and Chloe would not be inclined to share.
With Nooroo, on the surface they can be a sweet pair, but being a very gentle and soft spoken kwami, I don’t see Nooroo as a kwami that Adrien will listen to if Nooroo spoke out or voiced his concerns. Nooroo can help Adrien understand and deal with emotional situations he may not have a grasp on, but that’s not a certainty until Adrien actually listens.
Adrien can match Fox as a risk taker, someone who likes to be flashy, is playful, and wants to put on a show. But that there is where it ends. Adrien at the core is a very reactive character who likes to be in the thick of things and that’s not where Fox is supposed to be. Fox requires creativity, observation skills, and means of manipulating your audience without ever confronting them. Adrien is more offensive-oriented than a good Fox should be. He shares a similar issue with Alya that he would go with the first thing that comes to mind, whether its good or not, or even if he has all the details down needed for a good illusion. Chances are also good that (like Alya), he also waits to hear what illusion his partner may tell him to do than think of one himself. He tends to go with his gut and responds to the first thing he sees. And out of the 5, this is the one most designed to be background oriented, so him joining any fights makes things risky for him as he’s quite limited in fights. And having a Fox seen, enemies get a sense that there’s going to be an illusion soon.
This would be the 2nd to address issues of his recklessness, but would be far more punishing. If he’s determined to become a good Fox, this is going to force him to step back, observe, and think. But being so action oriented and responsive, and having this instinctive need to act rather than plan (as we really see him struggle and get frustrated in Refleckdoll), its going to take a while before he gets that patience.
Trixx and Adrien would be a pair that I see to be quite one sided. Passive as he can be, I see Trixx quite easily manipulating Adrien. And depending on one’s stance, this could be good or bad. Trixx is sharp enough to see what his humans desire, and knows what to say to change how think or change their actions. Trixx maybe the best kwami to pair with Adrien as he will assist Adrien in getting what he wants and needs, but is capable of getting Adrien to reconsider his stance or actions, which can improve Adrien’s character and his relation with others.
Between Ladybug and Cat... honestly Adrien isn’t the best fit for either of them. But if he HAS to have one... it would technically be Cat as the power is more suited to who he is. It’s up his alley, though certain aspects don’t make it ideal.
it is the same issue and risk as Bee, Adrien is very reckless and reactive. Canonly he has summoned Cataclysm too soon. And then there’s the issue of kwami. Plagg is not a good kwami match up with Adrien. Plagg isn’t a very involved kwami and he relies on his humans to self-sufficient and figure out issues themselves, largely expects a small mention will be enough. Not so with Adrien who needs a more direct personality to listen to, and by the time Plagg realizes he needs to be more direct, Adrien largely dismisses him as Plagg has set himself up as unreliable at the start.
Between the two, Tikki would be the better kwami for Adrien. She is very involved and engaging, and makes it clear when she has an issue, to a point she’d be hard for Adrien to dismiss. Though chances are slim that he would as she’d be engaging at the start unlike Plagg. Adrien can even get Tikki herself to grow as he needs clearer answers than just a simple call out, forcing her to offer up solutions and alternatives for his own actions. Tikki also would get Adrien to start involving himself in others, if not outright stepping up as a leader, be more conscious of others and help them with their issues. She would’ve been good to help Adrien branch out. Unfortunately, the Ladybug miraculous is confirmed to not be a good fit and there would be a lot of struggles for Adrien at the start.

Piano Demon Headcanons (2)
He is incredibly loyal. He is extremely unlikely to betray any allies he makes unless given good reason to.
This mostly applies to Alastor, though. As he doesn't socialize much with anyone else.
A big part of the fear surrounding him is his partnership with Alastor and the undying loyalty attached to it. Meaning outside his music, his goals can change on a dime based on what Alastor has in mind.
He is truly neutral. He has no ego to satisfy, no people to harm for revenge, none to help for the sake of their reputation. He makes decisions based on fact and circumstance.
He will assist someone if he is needed, given they are on good terms and the request is reasonable.
He will pretty much do anything asked of him or watch things occur without a fuss, even if it is extreme. He does have a set of morals, so there are few things he will not partake in for anyone.
While he has morals, it is rare to see him actively go against someone who violates the morals he sets for himself.
If he comes across someone that does something he would never do concerning morals, he would find them disgusting and keep his distance. But he wouldn't lecture them or try to stop them.
You should see him, Alastor, and Rosie in the same room. The chaotic musical energy coming off of them can not be overstated. It's a blast.
While Alastor and Rosie set the mood and steal the show with their singing and choreography, without The Piano Demon there it wouldn't be nearly as fun. So they both claim.
He may not be as flamboyant as the other two but is equally as passionate and makes everything pop on stage.
So much so Alastor has a habit of getting flirty during song performances. Maybe will throw in an unwritten lyric as a call or if the song is purely improvised he'll throw in any compliments he can without sacrificing the songs quality. Or lean on his back or shoulder with his elbow from behind with a warm gaze.
Rosie is guilty of this as well. Though the intent is strictly platonic, she does like charming the tall reindeer and genuinely admires his work. Plus, it's really fun to tease him.
Help his poor soul, he has to refrain from shutting down completely or strangling these two when this happens.
But he really does have fun, even if he will remain his stoic self.
If Mimzy joins? Oh no, the chaotic energy would break all of hell.
He is rarely, rarely ever angry.
Many have joked he is either made of ice or has the patience of a saint.
Especially considering who his lover is.
Odd considering where he ended up.
But when he is.....dear Lucifer. It is not a pretty sight.
It takes a lot to get him violent, so mostly he'll just be eerily silent and calm. Which is arguably worse because then you'll have to have a conversation with an enraged Piano Demon. Yikes.
If there is a reason for him to get violent....I don't know what to tell you other than someone done fucked up real bad. Getting someone as calm as him to this point is not an easy feat and they must have really hit a nerve.
Meanwhile, cut to Alastor in the background with heart eyes as the chaos unfolds.
If Alastor is on the recieving end of his rage, though, trust and believe he'll do everything to remedy the situation. Not only does he not like having his lover angry with him, he is also aware of how terrifying he can be and knows better than to test him when he's like that.
Alastor gives him lots of hand kisses.
Surprisingly, Angel and him get along well.
He is believed to be humorless based on the fact no one has heard him laugh. Ever.
But he actually has very sharp dry humor and sarcasm. He can be really sassy when he wants to, unitentional or not.
He's a polite gentleman so this usually only happens in retaliation. Or if he just wants to tease Alastor.
"Ice cold, Ol' Sport." - Alastor, after a solid roast.
Angel Dust trolls his social media account. Change my mind.
This usually just ends up looking like spam considering The Piano Demon is rarely on it. Then ends with him checking in months later with a billion odd messages from the spider and he just genuinely asks Angel if he's okay or refutes every comment he's made while he was gone with a lecture or simple logic, ultimately giving Angel great comebacks. Then he pretty much goes dead silent on his account again because yeah, busy old man as always. Making Angel look like a fool because he's basically talking to no one.
Everyone jokes about him being dead whenever he spares a moment online, once in a blue moon.
"Everyone, we are all dead. If you wish to have a running gag at least have it make sense."
He doesn't really like cuddling all that much but will sometimes lay on Alastor's lap with his mask off and allow him to stroke his hair. Alastor will sometimes sing or hum to him after a long day. (@thedrowsymoon helped me come up with this one.)
Do not sit on his piano. Do you want to get obliterated? Because that is how you get obliterated.
Stolas and him share tea time.
Stolas and him sometimes do what could be considered a "sleepover". Stolas is a cuddler, much to The Piano Demon's dismay and Alastor's annoyance when hearing about their hangouts. He doesn't mind Stolas's affection all that much though, so long as it remains appropriate.
But Lucifer help him if he wants to paint nails. He'll fight him every step of the way.
Alastor and him slow dance in their rooms to release tension whenever the other feels stressed out. They did this when they were alive as well.

hey !! finally getting around to posting this. you can call me aries, i’m 23 and in the bst ( uk ) timezone. my pronouns are she / her. i’m a little lost art school grad with a lot of student debt, a taste for red wine and an unhealthy obsession with arctic monkeys. not gonna lie, i whipped this kiddo up specifically for this rp so i’m still getting used to them, but hopefully with this intro you’ll get a feel for what they’re about. without further ado, here’s alby—
trigger warnings & disclaimer: mentions of hard drugs, alcohol, anger issues, destructive tendencies. my intention writing this intro was not to glamorize or romanticize these things in any way but if anything i have written comes across that way, please lmk!
smash that ♡ to plot or hit me up on discord @ chaotic aries#5793 !!
‘and this is how it starts...’ ( the basics )
name: alby fox miller age: twenty-three gender: non-binary ( demi-boy ) pronouns: he / him & they / them date of birth: may 24th 1997 zodiac: gemini sun, pisces moon, aries rising orientation: pansexual occupation: bassist for drive like i do career claim: ross macdonald ( the 1975 ) genre: alt-pop, pop-rock
‘it’s the way we are, we were smoking by eleven & knocking ‘round town...’ ( background )
you’re born in 1997, in the north west of england. wilmslow, to be exact. a quaint and affluent town, just south of manchester. the family you’re born into is a comfortable one. not quite living lavishly, but not at all struggling, either. your parents both work in business out in the city. you go to a good school. but... all is not how you exactly want it to be.
see, your parents are quite pushy. they expect you to live how they want, rather than how you do. at the all boy’s academy they enroll you in as a teenager, they expect you to pick what they deem as intellectual subjects, such as foreign languages, further mathematics and computer science. there’s a focus on you becoming someone that makes a lot of money, rather than someone who is happy.
but you’re... not the kind of person that can be molded so easily. you’re a fairly happy-go-lucky kid, but also a rebellious one. your parents’ strict ways of trying to force you down their chosen path, only encourages you more heavily to choose your own.
at fourteen, you meet the guys. lennox, jovi & jasper. they’re some of the only kids at school who can be bothered to be around you, with your high energy and bolshy attitude. really, they’re the only people who embrace you for who you are. they encourage your weirdness and outspokenness. it’s not long before you find yourself wanting to do everything together. it’s not long before the four of you are inseparable.
from there, you fully detach from everything your parents want you to be. you embrace your individuality. you also find the courage and bravery to come out to your parents as non-binary at the age of sixteen. there’s not a single person’s opinion that you’re afraid of, or even care about.
it’s not all rainbows & sunshine, though. you struggle somewhat with anger issues, and a bit of depression. you’re also practically addicted to getting into trouble: picking fights with bullies at school, selling weed & pills to your friends around town, underaged drinking... you get the gist. though you keep your fears internal, you sometimes worry you’ll get nowhere in life.
so of course, the second the boys are talking about starting a band, you’re all in. imagine if you made it big someday? wouldn’t that be sick? you’re immediately drawn to bass guitar, and use a month’s worth of saved up pocket money to pick one up from the big music store in the city. thankfully, you pick it up quite quickly, because before you can even realize it, things are getting so... real. by sixteen, you don’t feel you have the option to stick around at school for sixth form, because drive like i do is already playing local venues and working on its first album.
you’re just seventeen when the album is released. somehow, the climb to fame is faster than you could have ever imagined. it seems like yesterday you were still watching bass tutorials on youtube in your bedroom and practicing in your friend’s garage after school. first is some notoriety across the uk, but before you know it — boom! global stardom. the fame is a heavy weight for someone so young to carry... but fuck it, it’s gonna be fun, and you know it.
you’re twenty-three now, and days are gone of pipedreams formed in your parent’s shoebox room. you split your time between manchester, london, and LA — and that’s just during rare moments of downtime from your world tours. your band is 4 albums in, and whoever hasn’t heard of you might as well have been living under a rock. is it narcissistic to think like that? maybe, but you don’t care. this is rock n’ roll, baby. this is the life.
naturally, all eyes are mostly on your very outspoken frontman. he’s controversial, but the media can’t get enough of him. as for you? to them, you’re... the band’s problem child. while you argue that your behavior is no different than that of your friend, he’s got the lead singer charm. they don’t seem to like you as much. why? well...
‘drink, fall, spew...’ ( troublesome tendencies & exposed secret )
you never really coped as well as you acted like you did, did you? while you were grateful for the fame, everything was... a lot, and it was all at once. you didn’t even get the chance to process it.
take four twenty-somethings and add constant prying journalists, paparazzi, and constantly full schedules into the mix. and why not pepper in some typical rockstar vices, too? alcohol, drugs, parties, throwaway sex. things are destined to get a little rocky. though you tried at first not to show it to your fans, your destructive behavior soon got the better of you, and you became known to drunkenly lash out at paps, smash cameras and storm out of interviews when the questions got too personal.
this all came to a head when you were caught on camera several times distributing acid tabs, cocaine and mdma at events, music festivals & awards shows. the press gave the band a pretty bad time over this, and given the other members’ controversies and lennon’s similar link to drugs, it wasn’t a good look for any of you.
it didn’t matter that you had a side to you that was good, pure. that you were always kind and loving and down-to-earth towards your fans and friends. you were a bad seed, and you wound up on exposed with the rest of your bandmates. hopefully you can prove there’s more to you than what the media shows...
‘oh & you say, i’m such a cliche...’ ( personality )
immm gonna rush thru this section & write less formally bc those other parts too me WAY too long
basically a literal toddler. loves a laugh, loves a good time, but get on his bad side and he WILL throw a tantrum
it’s mainly people like press & paps he lets his anger out on. the band’s fans and people he’s close with on a personal level know he’s a good person underneath it all
loves a bit of mischief / rebellion / drama
king of hiding insecurities....
literal softie.... like... who allowed this binch to be so soft. he’s so open about how much he loves his friends (particularly his bandmates) and will platonically kiss and hug and love people all the time, particularly on the show bc he’s trying to show the cameras his softer side dfjghdfdfg
so excitable like WHERE does this kid get all his energy...
( tw drugs ) will probably struggle a bit on the show without access to drugs, but ( tw addiction mention ) he has never really been addicted or dependent on them, just a frequent user.
outspoken as fuck, has no filter sometimes oops
very flamboyant, in line with the general aesthetic of his band but also on a personal level. sports a kind of soft gothic/punk/early 2000s emo look. always paints his nails and wears makeup etc
sleeps around a lot but has never really been able to find a lasting relationship, has just had a bunch of short-lived flings???? but lowkey develops crushes at the drop of a hat and would love to properly fall in love with someone who could be with him forever & accept him for all his flaws, but he highly doubts that will ever happen fgjdhsfg
‘why don’t you figure my heart out?...’ ( wanted connections )
exes on good terms
exes on bad terms ( maybe someone who actually really wanted to stay with him but couldnt deal with his bullshit and now resents him? )
someone who loves the band’s music & inflates his ego ab it
someone he hasn’t seen for years that he’s reunited on the show & maybe they’re revisiting old feelings for each other??? and he wants it to be DIFFERENT this time but also theres shit tons of fucking cameras and shit which... makes things difficult...
first friend he made in LA or in the states in general, someone who showed him the ropes
someone who hates him / hates the band like PLEASE
and also just a straight up enemy maybe?? someone who finds him annoying as fuck??
FRIENDS!!!
literally anything just hmu and lay an idea on me and theres 90% chance ill be down

sweeney todd manila review
okay, just a heads up, i don’t know much about sweeney todd outside of this production and of what little bits i’ve heard of the other productions, so this won’t be the most professional review. i watched the show on the twentieth of october and i believe the whole cast was there.
btw, this is gonna be really messy bc i still have lots of stuff to do so i’m speed typing this review out KDDLJF.
(hello, @thegirlisuedtobe, this is for you! sorry if this is very late, i was really busy!)
- the set is phenomenal. before the show started, there was the sound of rain while smoke scattered across the stage. it really gave off a very eerie vibe to the show, even if it hasn’t started, and i give huge props to the set designers for setting the tone of the musical!
- here’s what amazed me the most about the set-- FLOATING CARS. there were cars hanging up on strings and just... wow. absolutely breathtaking. there was also an upperstage that was build particularly for this musical which was also well done as well. on stage left, there was this platform in particular that intrigued me because it was slanted and only had a railing that could possibly reach below your thigh. it was risky, i might say, and because of that, huge appreciation to the cast because they were able to maneuver themselves on that platform without slipping or injuring themselves.
- another interesting prop which i’m sure many of you have seen in promos was the red car that both mrs lovett and sweeney todd used. in my opinion, at first glance, the car looked cool, but there were some pros and cons.
- pros of the car: the car gave some kind of edginess to the musical. the main characters rode the car into the stage as their introduction and it really left a good impact! additionally, i loved the way how they moved the car around. all transitions were so smooth and commendable and i praise the designer who thought of all of these up.
- cons of the car: it was awkward when the setting was at the bakery of mrs lovett. the car represented the second floor of the building and the chair of sweeney’s barbershop merely rested on top of the car. it was... kinda confusing at first, especially when it is really up to the audience on how they want to interpret the murders that occurred on the car (more on that later). additionally, the car served as a weird divider to the shop, the bakehouse, and the barbershop, and honestly, they should’ve placed the barbershop on the upperstage instead of on top of the car. (gurl, when i say i was confused, i say i was confused.)
- the keep your cellphone message was really funny to me but... kinda long? like it was so unnecessarily long that i was confused whether the show started or not. i also thought they were checking the set since there was many props littered around. but when they eventually get to the point of things, it was really, really funny, so i commend them for adding this small comedic scene just for audience members to stop taking photos.
- the singing of the cast was phenomenal! these people are just... so great, and it was definitely the highlight of the show.
- now... here’s where i get a little bit iffy-- the costumes. i don’t really know what to say because the costumes seem... laughable. but not in a good way. it seems like they wanted to modernize the costumes which is understandable but at some cases, it kinda fails?
- pros of costume: mrs lovett and pirelli really have the costumes which i loved. lea salonga did not look like herself but my god, did her costume stand out from the rest. and pirelli, on the other hand, had a cape that wooshed around a lot alongside a skirt, and boio, did nyoy volante nail this costume well. the modernizing costume thing didn’t really work with the others besides these two. other modernized costumes that look passable were tobias’ costume and some of the ensemble. (also, jonas fogg wore a denim jacket with a junji ito screencap on the back of it? uh, okay, i love junji ito but why is his manga featured here...)
- cons of costume: oh boy. sweeney todd’s costume was... eh. jeans, really? out of everything they could’ve given to sweeney fucking todd, they gave him a polo under a denim jacket under a blazer and jeans? then there’s the mess that is johanna’s costume design. girl, the designer probably went to an sm sale and decided to just shove anything they found in the department store into their cart. johanna’s dress was. eh. her wig? eh. the costumes didn’t snatch my wig but i’ll let them snatch my wig just so that they can replace whatever the heck johanna has on her head. additionally, not all costumes were modernized... which is like... what? the ensemble who had victorian era-esque costumes looked fine! they even could’ve given sweeney todd one of their costumes because it looked much better than the denim outfit they gave sweeney. it’s just quite... odd to see a mix of modernized costumes and oldstyle costumes mix all together because they lowkey clash with one another.
- okay, let’s move on to the actors themselves. let’s start of with lea salonga-- oh my god, she is a legend. she easily adapted into being mrs lovett and that is so commendable especially when she isn’t used to playing an insane role like that. her mrs lovett had consistent, chaotic energy which i admired and she really was the one to eye whenever you see her in a scene.
- jett pangan was great but he isn’t as consistent as lea when he portrayed his character. sweeney todd was insane, he is angery, he is chaotic but jett pangan portrayed him as stoic and silent in some parts. i really enjoyed his more insane side during little priest but i wished he kept it throughout the whole performance. what i did like about him is his voice is just so, so great. his vibratos were so good y’all, his singing in general makes up for everything. additionally, when sweeney gets emotional, he did a really good job portraying a sadder and more depressed kind of sweeney, almost like he was having some existential crisis on stage. (he really looked like he was regretting life choices during by the sea and the ending, it was actually kind of amusing).
- now, luigi quesada, an underrated actor from this production. god... he was just so consistent and energetic and an absolutely great actor. he really portrayed a pure soft boi through tobias and when he started to become insane, he portrayed that shift of character so fucking well. the shift of character was my absolute favorite thing because, in my opinion, it is the scariest thing that’s happened in sweeney todd. tobias was a pure, innocent child who wanted nothing more but to have a smol job and serve others nicely and then, bam, when he saw the corpses, something snapped in his head and it was so horrific to witness his change. additionally, luigi had such a cheerful singing voice which embodied the character well and accustomed to both the innocent and insane side of tobias.
- nyoy volante was another great treasure in this. he wasn’t as seen since his character died midway through but his stage presence is so great. he was so flamboyant while also being very comedic, using his costume to emphasize the comedy. also, he didn’t die immediately when he got attacked by sweeney, and he did portray the struggling pirelli so, so well.
- gerald santos was... okay. he has a great singing voice, they all do, so i tend to judge how good they are based from their acting. gerald was really good at portraying a panicky anthony who was desperate for johanna. his character was really consistent and i like that! my main issue with gerald is at some times, his diction isn’t too great. i know that some filipinos (even me) would struggle pronouncing words in english, but if you’re an actor who’s worked on many musicals in english, i expect a lot from you. i think he had a really thick filipino/tagalog accent and mixed with a really mediocre british accent, it wasn’t too... understandable. i couldn’t understand most of his dialogue and because he can’t do accents well, his acting becomes affected.
- mikkie volante’s voice is so fucking beautiful, how do you even sing that high and make it look easy? anyways, she portrayed a very frightful johanna very well, and i can’t believe how much the costume and wig really affects my perception of the character. it’s just... i can’t take her seriously if she looks... like that. okay, enough about the costumes-- her johanna felt scared and i felt that, but when she fell in love with anthony, she was desperate, and i fuckin loved it. being isolated for your entire life will leave you desperate for affection and mikkie fucking nailed it!
- andrew fernando was so-so as the judge. he wasn’t... creepy, or disturbing. his character is disgusting and so close-minded but i never felt any eerie vibes from him. i also think the costume he had was restricting him from doing anything because he had layers upon layers of clothing and when he began whipping himself, he looked like he struggled a lot to sing and do the actions (the costumes for this production is just so off in general it’s a bit offensive). there wasn’t much stage presence from him and i just wanted him to act a bit filthier.
- arman ferrer as the beadle was a trip. he portrays the character as so dumb and i loved it, it’s just the idiotic energy really cracks me up. additionally, his singing, oh my word, his singing is so good. he hits high notes like it was no problem and it was jawdropping. there was not much to say besides his fuckin costume was whack why did he wear that-- but overall, he was pretty solid!
- ima castro was good! she portrayed a crazy beggar woman which was so chaotic and funny and just fucking bonkers and i loved the energy she had! the only thing i note is that, at times, her voice would stop and i’m not sure if it was intentional or not? even if it wasn’t, it actually added to her character rather than brought her down.
- ensemble was... phenomenal. ignoring the costumes for the hundredth time, i love the ensemble so much because they don’t get enough credit yet they nail it every time they get into a production. their acting during the asylum scene? iconic. their accents? iconic. everything was so iconic.
- now, imma just say a few points in the show that i remembered which is worthy enough to tell yall of.
- here i’ll explain how the murders work. it’s kinda... weird. the execution was inconsistent and i remembered three ways on how they were able to kill and cook their victims. firstly, the murder with pirelli is the only one of its kind. sweeney sliced his throat and threw him into the driver’s seat of the car which was confusing considering how the other murders took place. the second kind of murder and the more common one is when sweeney sliced someone’s throat, the victim would walk off the car and walk into mrs lovett’s oven by themselves. i’m assuming that with pirelli, they didn’t bake him yet so they just hid him in some kind of box or crate somewhere. the third kind applied to the judge and the beggar woman wherein when they killed them, it was implied that they were brought to the bakehouse and not burnt.
- here’s my interpretation of how the murders go. in the original, the bakehouse was the basement, but here, i assume since they claim it’s a “bakehouse”, there’s a secret compartment in the barbershop that brings dead bodies directly into the oven. i’m guessing that with judge turpin and the beggar woman, the oven was not on so they were just... brought there? it’s really, really confusing and i wished they cleared it up so i won’t keep wondering about what is where and how things work. i do think that the victims walking into the oven is really genius because it was a perfect mix of comedy and eeriness which i really commend.
- i liked the way they portrayed the streets in this. they used the upper stage and it really clears up where each scenery is set! it isn’t like the bakery and barbershop wherein the set is confusing, it was much better than that. when mrs lovett and sweeney walked up to pirelli’s barbershop, the scenery was so interesting because they walk from above and look down at them. i really, really liked it.
- additionally, the sprays tobias advertised were cleaning sprays found in ace hardware store, that’s funny. also, the only time their haggard wigs would be effective is when tobias used it and nothing else. (i’ve seen better wigs in beautiful, where did those wigs go?)
- the way they portrayed johanna’s place was so, so good. johanna’s room would be atop the upper stage and, ugh, it’s just so well put-together. this whole set was the work of god and no one can convince me otherwise.
- the lighting was great but the sound design was a bit off for me. the electrocution noises were smart to use but i thought it was a bit too loud? like it was really off-putting. i wished they added gross sloshing noises when they were handling the body parts just to add give a better effect when mrs lovett was holding actual intestines and organs.
- the opening of act 2 was hilarious and one of the more intriguing parts of this musical. pangan’s voice? spectacular. lea’s look of distress whilst serving pies? hilarious. the ensemble? god’s gift to mankind. it was so comedic because sweeney is calmly singing about johanna whilst he slices throats and the victims, in a daze, just walk into an oven while mrs lovett’s expression just screams, “yea, that’s life.”
- i can’t believe. they used handkerchiefs to express what a wig is during the asylum scene. like............ really. where are the leftover wigs from beautiful???
- also, it was weird to me that johanna was the one who shot jonas fogg. it was kinda badass of her and perhaps portrayed her character to become more brave but i still kinda thought it was ooc? (ALSO DEAN ROSEN IS GREAT I LOVE HIM HE POSTS CAT STUFF ON IG AND THATS ALL HE DOES)
- okay someone clarify with me because i initially thought tobias escaped the bakehouse, hence why they went looking for him, but they said it was locked from the outside and i’m left confused why they left in the first place...?
- btw whenever lea speaks, i become more of a lesbian, thanks lea salonga.
- when the plot twist was revealed and mrs lovett and sweeney were slow dancing, that was a theatrical experience. god, just... mrs lovett with the most fearful look in her face as sweeney slowly moves her into the oven is so iconic and that has to be one of the more chilling scenes in the musical. then, once sweeney kills her off, she holds the beggar lady close to him and he looks absolutely mournful.
- AND THEN TOBIAS FUCKING COMES BACK AND GIVES THE BIGGEST CHILLS EVER. will i ever stop talking about how good tobias was written/how good luigi quesada is? probably not.
- anyways, tldr; sweeney todd was beyond average but wasn’t perfect, the costumes were. eh. the singing was perfect, the SET was amazing, lea salonga, nyoy volante, and luigi quesada own my heart, and philippine theatre really needs better wig suppliers, someone please donate your wigs to them.

Dichotomy
Part 8
Author’s note: The chapter in which Michael and Mallory are having none of each other’s shit. Also, buckle up, the slow burns about to become a wildfire.
Warnings: Language
Tumblr media
Mallory became more comfortable with leaving her apartment as time went on, though she didn’t interact with anyone besides Rhoda. Not for lack of trying. She’d see other people, either at the various entertainment facilities they’d built or just in passing. At best, she was treated like a plague; avoided and snubbed, which she didn’t mind at all, she was used to it. Coco’s various functions and friendships had made her build up a callous to elitist bullshit.
The one difference between then and now was Rhoda. She couldn’t remember having any friends when she’d moved to L.A., let alone a best friend; but Rhoda quickly earned the title, perhaps out of necessity, but not begrudgingly. Once they’d gotten over the hurdle of master/servant, they found they had a lot in common; a grounded sense of self, a natural helpfulness, and now even a deep love and respect for Princess Leia. Mallory couldn’t help but wish that they’d known each other under much different circumstances. Ones where there was no apocalypse or Antichrist, and she wasn’t a designer human grown in a lab, and they could have normal lives; where she’d have Rhoda to hang out with on her birthday, and not feel completely alone every waking second of the day like she’d been since moving...though she forgot why she moved.
But the nicest times with Rhoda, or at any point, were at the Sanctuary’s library. It was a less populated area, and so peacefully quiet; even in the apocalypse people obeyed library rules.
It was a grandiose as the rest of the complex; floor to ceiling rows of books spanned rich mahogany shelves underneath a glass roof trimmed in gold, the floor the same reflective black marble. They’d get lost just searching for books, any kind; Rhoda was most fascinated by history, inundating Mallory with questions about what used to be America or other countries. To which she would shrug most of the time, she’d never been an A student in history. Oddly enough, Mallory found herself drawn to collections of fairytales or myths; enthralled by tales of witches and fairies, gods and monsters. She’d never considered herself a fanciful person, but felt an irresistible pull to the mystical.
Their peace, however, was interrupted one day when a servant entered the library and made a beeline for the two of them with an envelope in his hand. He stopped, gave a quick bow and held out the envelope.
“An invitation from Lord Langdon.”
They looked at each other, confused and scared. Mallory took the envelope carefully. It was blood red, a golden seal with the indent of a goat enclosing its contents. She popped it open, unfurling a short letter in a thick, cursive hand.
Mallory, may I have the pleasure of your company for dinner tonight? I await your answer with bated breath.-Michael Langdon
She gave the messenger a deadpan stare, “You can’t be serious.”
“He needs an answer,” they responded just as blankly.
She furrowed her brows, then nodded gravely, “Yes.”
They bowed and left in a hurried pace. Leaving the two women frozen in place.
“God, that man is pretentious,” Mallory muttered, rolling her eyes.
“He wants to appear calm and in charge,” Rhoda replied, more so to herself.
Mallory turned to her, “How’d he know where I’d be?”
She lifted up her arm with the black band, “Our wristbands are tracked.”
“Comforting.”
* * *
Lydia had become another fixture of Mallory’s new life, a slightly more annoying one, but still welcome. And of course, she just had to make Mallory a dress for the evening, even though she insisted she could wear any number of the others; but she was determined. Lydia was practically buzzing with chaotic energy as she designed, made the pattern, and started sowing this new dress in a single hour.
“Is that satanic influence or pure talent?” Mallory joked.
“Both,” she replied, not looking at her.
The final product, finished just in time, left Mallory speechless. It was a soft, flowing white dress. The bodice was encrusted with gold trim and adornment, leading down to a skirt with feathery fringe; the sleeves open and sheer, draped and falling off the shoulders. Rhoda helped place the finishing accessory of a golden crown of flowers.
“What do you think?” Lydia asked, glowing with pride.
“It’s gorgeous,” she said turning to her, “It’s very angelic.”
She chuckled with a wink, “I thought it’d be a nice little contrast.”
Mallory smiled and looked in the mirror again.
Words were scratched on the mirror; slowly each letter appeared, line by line. Time seemed to stall. Her gaze was set; unmoving, as the impossible happened right before her eyes once again. Eventually, the message was complete, and it was incomprehensible to her.
Spiritu duce, in me est. Deduce me in tenebris vita ad extremum, ut salutaret inferi. Descensum!
“Mallory?”
Rhoda placed her hand on her shoulder, “Are you ok?”
She gave no reaction, not wanting to alert Lydia.
“I’m fine.”
The same messenger from before arrived at her apartment with the same breakneck speed she’d delivered the invitation. The moment Rhoda opened the door, the escort looked at Mallory and informed her, “Lord Langdon requests Miss Mallory come alone.”
Mallory could see Rhoda’s grip tightened on the doorknob and the sudden fear in her eyes.
“It’s fine, Rhoda,” she assured, “I’ll be fine.”
As she left, Lydia called out after her, “Good luck, dear!”
She felt like a teenager going on her first date, her doting parents watching out for her. The entire situation both filled her with dread and a weird humor; of all things she never expected to happen, the first was a nuclear apocalypse, and the second was dinner with the Antichrist. She wondered if her reckoning had finally come for the Temple incident; she had flashes of blood and gore pass through her imagination, all the different ways Langdon could kill her.
At least she knew she had a defense mechanism; she had no idea how to use it, but it was something. She’d tried to manifest it on her own free will, but no matter how hard she focused, she would hit a brick wall. Maybe, she thought, it was only an emotional response. Maybe the threat of dying will be all it takes for me to go off. That is if I get the-
Her thought stopped as they exited the main complex, a motorized cart waiting outside. It wasn’t anything fancy or futuristic like she’d come to expect, just a simple gray cart.
“What, does he live in an entirely different building?”
They got into the cart without a word. She took that as a yes. She slipped into the cart and they began to drive. The artificial lights had been dimmed to a more evening-time atmosphere, the outside of the glass looking as green and dark as before. They came upon a house 20 miles eastward of the complex, as gothic as Mallory expected. It was Victorian architecture, the wood painted a deep red with accents of black. A black iron staircase led up to stain glass doors under a spherical archway, which to her looked like a mouth, the black crown molding its ready teeth. The escort parked and led her up the stone pathway, the familiar darkness creeping up around her.
The escort rang the doorbell, receiving an immediate answer.
Michael opened the door, fully clad in gothic regalia; though not as extravagant as expected. The escort bowed deeply without a word, immediately leaving at the wave of Michael’s hand. Within a blink, the two were left alone, Mallory still standing on the stairs.
“Oh, Mallory,” he mused, looking her over, “you didn’t have to dress up for me.”
She restrained herself from rolling her eyes, didn’t want to get killed too early.
He raised an eyebrow with a smug grin, “Still so shy?”
“What would you like me to say?” She crossed her arms, “Thanks for inviting me to dinner? Nice place you got here?”
“Gratitude is always a good way to start.”
She stared at him blankly.
“Or not.”
He stepped back, extending his arm to invite her inside. She cautiously slipped passed him, feeling her skin tingle from his gaze never leaving her. She looked around, the inside not as loft and flamboyant as the exterior. It was stately, like a house that came from old money.
“I wanted a house similar to my childhood home...” he told her, “one of them, anyway.”
He turned to the left and started walking, she followed silently. They entered a dining room, not dissimilar to...
She couldn’t finish the thought, like the memory was hiding from her.
Food was already laid out on the table, nothing fancy at all; steak, potatoes, a few vegetables on two plates at each end, wine glasses beside them; a simple candelabra in the center.
“Ms. Mead has opted not to join us this evening,” he said in passing as he pulled out her chair.
She obliged and sat down, the strangeness of the whole situation growing in the pit of her stomach; she thought of the Twilight Zone, or like being in a simulation where the ones controlling it only barely know how everyday life operates.
“Why am I here?”
He had already begun to eat, “I feel as if we got off on the wrong foot.”
She didn’t move, “That’s a weird way to say you poisoned me.”
“I told you, it was a test,” he lifted the glass to his lips, “And you seem to me to be alive and well.”
“And are you trying to fix that?”
He set down the glass, looking at her with a mixture of offense and concern, “Mallory, I’m a man of my word. You passed the test, you made it to the Sanctuary, why would I take that away from you?”
She shrugged, “Seems like something you’d do.”
“Perhaps you don’t know me as well you assume, then.”
Something in his tone, or in his eyes, was off; not as confident, not as clear.
“Just as I don’t know you,” he continued, “I haven’t forgotten your coyness at your first interview,” he smiled, “I was hoping this would establish a new sense of trust. Perhaps we can be friends.”
She huffed, “You have an odd way of making friends.”
“Must explain my lack of them.”
There was the shift again. A twinge of...sadness? A wavering.
He leaned closer, curling his fingers under his chin, “There are so few interesting people in the world. People you can’t figure out within the first five minutes of meeting them. I like getting to know these people. See what makes them tick.”
She nodded, finding herself slipping into peculiar comfort, “I’m an experiment.”
“You’re fascinating,” he mumbled to himself, “Tell me about Coco.”
Words spilled from her, like an overflowing glass, “She was a Capricorn, hated hazelnut, the color orange, and Lana Del Ray. She wanted an iced mocha with exactly 10 large ice cubes every morning at 8:30 on the dot. One time she asked me how to spell the word “insatiable” for a tweet,” she chuckled, “I still have no idea what that tweet was. She once threw my phone into my drink because I wasn’t paying attention to her while she was talking. I was texting my mom,” her voice became sad, but her mind somewhat struggled to pull the memory from the depths, “She’d just had a mastectomy and I hadn’t seen her face to face in three years.”
“And yet you mourn her,” he whispered, his eyes fixed on her like a trance.
After a pause, she looked down in thought, “She was no stranger to being a bitch but she was still a person. I never thought she deserved to die. She needed me to take care of her to watch her and make sure she was ok. For all her bravado she was like a baby bird that really didn’t know how to flap its wings. And it was my job to help her,” a tear slipped down her cheek onto the plate, “And the one time I don’t...”
He stood from the table, slowly walking towards her. She was weeping now, not of her own free will.
“I should’ve seen that something was wrong, I should’ve known. I could’ve done something. I failed her. And then I got to come back, I got to keep living. And I can’t help but keep thinking that I don’t deserve to when she didn’t.”
He crouched down next to her, using his thumb to brush away a tear, “Why did she matter so much to you?”
She shook her head, I have no idea. I just felt so protective of her. She was such a short part of my life, yet I felt this connection to her, more than anyone” she blinked confusedly, “...that I can remember at least.”
He touched her hand, entwining it in a comforting grip, “When you lose someone you love, you very quickly seek for an outlet to express your rage,” his eyes were wet, “sometimes even after your scapegoat has been sacrificed on the altar of your vengeance, there’s still some residue of anger left over for yourself.”
They stared at each other, something passing between them; a spirit of humanity, a shared grief. For a moment, she forgot who...what he was. His words sunk into her heart and made grooves for empathy to flow through like a river through tunnels. Her hand reached over and rubbed his shoulder, she didn’t know what he’d been through, but she knew she desired to relieve the pain.
Something changed when she touched him, his eyes were filled with a new emotion, determination, “Would it relieve some of your grief if Brock was killed?”
She was taken aback by the question. She didn’t answer at first, her mouth having to catch up with her mind.
“No,” she replied sadly, “No more death.”
He shoved away from her, and stood, an obvious aura of anger boiling over the surface, quickly dissolving the tenderness of the moment, “How selfless,” he growled, “and utterly apathetic of you.”
Her defenses shot up, “What?”
He looked ready to rip her apart, “You say you cared about Coco and yet you feel absolutely no desire to do anything about the one who took her life.”
Energy began to stir in her fingertips, “Not wanting revenge isn’t the same as indifference.”
He slammed his fist on the table, making her jump, “You didn’t give a fuck about Coco,” he leaned in, snarling, “She was your project, your tool to find your own self-satisfaction in helping such a stupid, vapid little heiress keep her life together.”
The fire began to coil in her chest and surge through her veins. She balled her hands into fists, “That’s not true.”
He laughed viciously, “You’re glad the bitch is dead, you only wish you had a replacement to keep up your illusion that you’re in control of your own life,” his eyes were wild with rage, “Is that your dark place, Mallory? Making the weak rely on you so you can feel better about yourself? You didn’t give a damn about her!”
She pushed away form the table, standing to face him, closing in on him, her voice as enraged, “You don’t know the first thing about me.”
”I know too well,” he met her confrontational stance.
Thick tension swirled around them. Sparks of power flaring between them, a sign of deeper energy, begging to explode.
He grimaced, “Do you know why I haven’t killed you yet, Mallory?”
“Because you’re afraid I’ll come back again,” she spat.
She was against the wall in a second, Michael’s fingers crushing her throat, his other hand tightening around her wrists above her head, his legs pinning her firmly. His hot breath ghosting over her face and neck with each word of venom, “Because you’d take it like a martyr,” he spoke dangerously low, she could barely struggle underneath his grip, her body going cold, “you’d grit your teeth and watch as I gutted you like a goddamn animal.” His eyes traced over her lips, she felt his breathing quicken, his heartbeat race, “You’d stare at me with those big brown eyes and whisper forgiveness from your pretty little mouth. You’d take every single blow with saintly silence. And I personally don’t like getting that angry,” he squeezed her neck, strangling a terrified gasp from her mouth, “Congratulations, you’re too infuriating to kill.”
She pushed him back with inhuman strength. He flew to the other wall, his head slamming with such force that for a moment she worried it had cracked. Panicking, she ran out of the room, nearly falling out the front door.
Ms. Mead came running in, seeing Michael on the ground, disoriented, “ What the hell happened?!”
* * *
She didn’t look back or think. She just ran. All she knew was the moving ground beneath her feet. She just had to-
She was in her room. Like a blip. Her body appeared in her room. Rhoda screamed, scared at first, before realizing it was her.
“Mallory!”
The world was shaking. Mallory’s eyes widened, seeing blurs of color and light. She collapsed to the floor.
“Mallory!” Rhoda shook her, crying.
Words came from her, spewing out with perfect clarity.
“Spiritu duce, in me est. Deduce me in tenebris vita ad extremum, ut salutaret inferi. Descensum!”
Her vision began to fade, the world around her getting smaller and smaller like she was descending into a tunnel. Pressure bared down on her body, and she sank lower and lower. Darkness covered her, a dull ring pierced through her ears, her skin feeling numb...
Blinding white light exploded all around her, then left as quickly as it came; replaced by gentle blue. The ground was solid beneath her; she wiggled her fingers, soft grass poking against her skin. She touched her face, feeling a temperate warmth on her cheek. It took her a moment before she realized...
Oh, it’s the sun...
The thought was so strange, the sensation even stranger. She sat up, using her arm to shield her eyes as her other hand swept over the grass. Looking around, she saw miles of open field stretch on into eternity, splashes of color dotting everywhere from the myriads of flowers. She stood, examining more of her surroundings, not seeing-
“Mallory!”
She whirled around, seeing a large glass building, similar in shape to a gazebo. The beams of sunlight bounced off its roof, casting a heavenly glow around it. She saw a figure standing in front of it, whom she assumed had called her. She couldn’t make out any features, or details, but recognized the voice as feminine...
And familiar
“Come inside!” she heard the figure say again, “We have a lot to talk about!”
A burst of energy surged through her veins, and Mallory found herself running; but without exerting any effort, as if she were a breeze nearly passing through with ease. She stopped at the front of the building, even bigger up close, and looked inside. It was a greenhouse, sections of different flora organized neatly throughout. A woman, honey-toned hair cascading down her back, stood watering a hanging plant.
“Hello?” Mallory called out carefully.
The woman turned. It had been months since she’d seen this face, but the memory appeared like a solid figure out of a pillar of smoke; along with a faint whisper, a ghost of remembrance.
Cordelia
“Mallory,” she smiled, placing the watering can down and walking up to the young woman, brushing a tuft of hair behind her ear with all the nurture of a mother.
“I’m so happy to see you.”

Seal of Fate Ch. 3 (4/8)
Tumblr media
Notes: Alright before anyone of you read this chapter, I feel the need to remind you that Emma Swan is not a bitch. Emma Swan is an amazing character with some flaws and whose life has been filled with all sorts of trauma. She has trust issues and most certainly PTSD. If you think someone with that background is going to have no issue trusting people, especially a magical seal man whom she’s known for like two weeks, without some issue then this story isn’t for you. This is a kind reminder that the canon events of Emma being abandoned, put in foster care and being pregnant with Henry in prison after the bullshit Neal pulled with her when she was 17 years old are canon in the Seal of Fate universe. So, with that being said, this chapter is mainly about Emma’s trauma and how it’s lead to her having a lot of trust issues. Do not come into my comments section and tell me that Emma Swan is a bitch for pushing away a seal man who she met two weeks ago. I will fight you. End of story. With that being said, there will be pay off for all the angst, anger and frustration here in the next chapter. I promise. I’m not pulling the rug out from underneath you. A special thanks to @aerica13 for being an amazing beta and for pushing me through this difficult chapter. I literally couldn’t have done with this without you. Thank you to @cssns and @drowned-dreamer for making my event experience so far amazing. Another big thank you to @katie-dub and @shireness-says for being my cheerleaders. Even though this story isn’t attracting a lot of traffic and it’s been a bit demoralizing, you make every word of this story worth it. Summary: Emma Swan is looking for only one thing - answers. Abandoned outside a police station in Menemsha, Martha’s Vineyard, Emma has dedicated her life to finding out where she comes from and why she was given away. She finds an unlikely partner in Killian, a selkie she inadvertently summons in a fit of frustration over her cold case. Word Count: 4,600+ AO3: [LINK] Chapters: Prologue | One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six | Epilogue Rating: T+
Emma Swan’s life was regulated by series of long, self-imposed rules. She always filled her gas tank whenever she hit the quarter ‘til empty mark. She didn’t trust food that didn’t come prepackaged. She always wore bike shorts under her dresses because of that punk kid in her fifth group home that skirted her. On top of that proverbial list of rules, written in bold red ink and underlined three times, was that Emma Swan did not ever, under any circumstances, sleep with men.
She didn’t sleep with men. Period.
Well, she slept with men but a purely utilitarian fuck-and-run way that satisfied occasional itches and abated the loneliness for awhile. She didn’t spend the night and she absolutely did not cuddle. Those sort of things led to issues. It meant conversations that were best not had. It meant being completely vulnerable with someone who was more likely than not a stranger she picked up in a bar.
Hence why she went into a full meltdown mode when she awoke the next morning still on the beach, sand in her pants and Killian curled around her like a clingy octopus. The very sight of him drooling on her shoulder sent off vaguely Kill Bill sounding sirens in her head.
So Emma did what she did best.
She ran.
And she didn’t look back. Not even for her shoes.
She went back into her house, grabbed her cell phone and keys, then got in the Bug and drove all the way to Oak Bluffs. Never before had Emma been so happy with the lack of a real police force on the island because she was sure to be have been pulled over with how fast she drove. The drive had been tense. She hadn’t been able to relax and no amount of tinkering with the radio assuaged her chaotic thoughts.
Killian was getting under her skin. He had been barely been in her life for more than two weeks but he had already gotten closer to her than anyone had in the past decade. It was something she needed to rectify and fast.
“He’s going to leave,” she mumbled to herself, slapping her hands against the steering wheel. “Once this is over, he’s going to leave and everything is going to go back to normal.”
The switch from West Tisbury to Oak Bluffs was a noticeable one. Where Chilmark blended in the West Tisbury almost seamlessly with the long line of white oak trees and the overgrown shrubbery that guided the poorly paved roads, the boundary leading to Oak Bluffs was noticeably more populated with houses and stores. The Cape Cod style that dominated Menemsha and Chilmark wasn’t so common and Emma was surprised to see some of the buildings actually looked like they had been built after 1970. Where the majority of the houses Emma had previously encountered tended to stick to the gray scale, these buildings were flamboyant shades of flamingo pink, soft orange and lime green. They reminded her of the elaborate gingerbread houses she had seen in the windows of bakeries as a child. It was fresh and new side to the island that she not yet explored and she allowed her curiosity to overtake the anxious energy that had dominated her mind since she had awoke.
As she got further into town, the scenery became more settled and more urban in its demeanor. If it weren’t for the occasional gingerbread house, she wouldn’t have known that she was still stuck in the Vineyard. It felt good be somewhat back in civilisation again.
It wasn’t until she was washing up in the bathroom of the infamous Black Dog bakery that she finally took notice of her unkempt appearance. She had mascara lines running down her cheeks, her hair looked like a rat’s nest and her clothes were rumpled. No wonder the cashier had given her an odd look when she had bought a bear claw. She looked like hell.
After running her fingers through her hair and washing her face, Emma tried to make herself look somewhat presentable. Her attempts were met with limited success but there was only so much that she could do given the circumstances.
As she walked over to the hospital, she couldn’t help but feel bereft. Over the past week and half, she had gotten used to Killian’s persistent commentary and suggestions on how to proceed. His absence sat heavy in her chest, pressing down on her ribs like a stone.
She didn’t want to but Emma couldn’t help how much she missed him. The realisation made her angry. She hated herself for growing so fond and so dependent on his company. He was merely a temporary fixture in her life, just like everyone else.
She didn’t need him and was probably better off without his help anyway.
The thought became a mantra, a mental war cry, as she straightened out her shoulders and walked towards the reception desk with the same dread and determination of a gladiator entering an battle arena.
The receptionist was a surly looking woman who eyed her with an expression that made it clear she was less than impressed with Emma’s appearance.
“This isn’t a recovery center. If you’re looking for one, you’ll have to take the ferry over to Hyannis. There’s a pamphlet for it on your left.”
Emma bristled at the comment, self consciously smoothing over the wrinkles in her shirt.
“My name is Emma Swan, I’m private investigator. I was hoping to look at your birth records.”
“No.”
“What?”
“I said no,” she repeated, this time with a hint of an edge to voice.
Emma sighed, fishing out her wallet and handing over her identification and investigator’s permit. The woman didn’t even in look at them, merely looked up at her with the same disapproving scowl.
“That’s my private investigator’s licens-” “I know what it is,” the woman cut her off. “If it’s not a court ordered document, I’m not letting you look at our database. I don’t know if you’re aware, Little Miss Investigator, but there is such a thing called HIPAA which means those documents are protected.”
“HIPAA does not cover birth and death certificates,” Emma replied through gritted teeth. “Those are a matter of public record.”
“Oh goody,” the woman replied in a sarcastic tone, “then go bother the Registry of Vital Records like everyone else.”
“I can’t do that. I don’t know exactly the specific person I’m looking for. Only that I’m looking for a female born in October 1983. This is related to a police investigation of an abandoned child out in Memensha.”
“You’re wasting your time,” she snorted. “The police probably looked at it in the 80s. You honestly think you’re better than a bunch of cops?”
“Yes,” Emma replied bluntly, bracing her hands against the desk and staring down at the woman with a look just barely short of contempt. “Because they didn’t investigate it. Now, I would like to look at your October 1983 birth records please.”
“HIPAA says-” “I give zero shits what HIPAA says. Please get me your supervisor.”
“No.”
Emma let out a frustrated sound, yanking her hands off the table and running through her hair. Killian wouldn’t have run into this kind of trouble. He would have just smiled and made a comment about how pretty her disgusting hair looked and that woman would have been willing to hand over her own social security number. The very thought made her even more angry.
She pulled out her phone and immediately looked up the number for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, specifically for the medical records department. When she found the correct number, she punched it and stared the receptionist directly in the eye as she held the phone up to her ear.
“Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Department of Records, this is Astrid speaking,” a woman on the other end of the line stated pleasantly.
“Hello Astrid, my name is Emma Swan, I’m a private investigator who is licensed in the states of Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and Florida. I’m investigating a cold case involving abandoned child in Menemsha October 1983. I was hoping I could look at your birth record files…”
There was a pause on the other end and Emma could hear the faint sound of conversation on the other end as she continued her staring contest with the nasty receptionist. A few moments passed before Astrid came back on the line.
“You wanted to look at the birth records during October in 1983?”
“Yes.”
There was another long pause. Emma counted the seconds in her head.
“Do you have a court order?”
“No,” she admitted. “But birth certificates are a matter of public record and as stated previously, I’m a licensed private investigator in the state of Massachusetts.”
“When did you plan on looking at the records?”
“Now, if that’s possible.”
There was a loud coughing noise on the other end followed by even more muffled conversation.
“Miss Swan, we need a little more time to get the records prepared for you. Give us a few hours, say after lunch around 2:30 and you can come down to the Records Department and have supervised access to the requested documents. Do you have more specific dates in mind or just the month of October?”
“Let’s keep it at the entire month of October just to be safe…”
“Okay. We will meet you at reception then and bring you down to Records at 2:30 then.”
“Thank you,” Emma replied, smirking at the receptionist. If she was feeling a little more immature, she would have fist pumped in her face. “I will see you then.”
After leaving the hospital, Emma wandered the streets of Oak Bluffs. She couldn’t help but feel that she was Martin Brody walking the streets of Amity Island. Everywhere she looked, it seemed to be tourist shops and ice cream places that had shut down for the winter. The only things that seemed to be open were the few restaurants like Sharky’s Cantina and Nancy’s. A large arcade on Main Street was also open despite the fact that there were only five kids inside, all of them crowding around some obnoxious game that involved loud shooting.
As she reached the docks, her phone buzzed. She frowned as she looked down at the screen, not recognising the number. She hit the ignore button as she began to examine the large yachts and fishing boats that were lined up. Some of them had clever names such as “The Codfather” and “The Aqua-holic.” Though the ship names held some amusement, she was shocked to see how far some were from home. Many of the ships docked were from Florida and South Carolina but there were a few from Jamaica and Bermuda. She couldn’t fathom why anyone from such sunny places would want to be in Martha’s Vineyard, especially in October.
It wasn’t until she was eating lunch at Dockside Marketplace that she realised whoever called her had left a message. Curious, she went to her voicemail and punched in her password.
It was Killian.
“Swan! Where are you! I woke up and you were gone! Your yellow death trap is gone! Are you alri-” Emma didn’t wait to hear what else he had to say. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with him. In a fit of pettiness, she turned off her phone and spent the rest of her lunch in petulant silence, listening to Top 40s pop music as she munched unhappily on her onion rings.
When she returned to the hospital, the receptionist from before was gone and replaced by a young blonde with tired eyes and a kind smile. She was chatting with a brunette in scrubs that was leaning against the desk. They looked up as soon as she came in and gave her cautious smiles.
“Are you Emma Swan?” the brunette asked politely.
“Yes.”
“I’m Astrid Acker, I work in the Records Department. Do you mind showing me your ID and private detective’s license?”
Emma fished them out of her pocket and handed them over. Astrid looked at them both for a moment before nodding satisfaction and handing them back. She motioned for Emma to follow her down a long hallway. They reached a stairwell and descended down into the basement levels. It had a cold industrial feel to it, with exposed pipes lining the walls and sterile colored tiles. Astrid led her down another hallway before taking her into a sparsely decorated office. It was cluttered as hell and it immediately made her feel claustrophobic. There were three oversized desks, two that were covered in sprawling documents and dated computers while the other was completely clear save for a single case box.
Astrid pulled two chairs over to the clear desk. She held the first chair out to Emma before sitting in the other one. She pulled the lid off the box and glanced back at Emma.
“Martha’s Vineyard sees an average of 176 births per year,” she said quietly. “In 1983, there was a total of 216 births. 23 of those were born in the month of October. All of them are in that box.”
“23?”
“23,” she confirmed. “You can look at the records but you cannot take them, make copies or photos of them.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re quite welcome.”
Emma’s hands shook as she pulled the files from the box. Immediately she separated the males from the females, heart hammering in her chest as the number of files dropped from twenty-three to eight.
Six were born in the beginning of October. Only two fell into the potential time period that Emma was looking for. One was named Jennifer Cameron and the other was Julia Wright. She glanced up from the documents and back at Astrid.
“What’s the population size of Martha’s Vineyard?”
“Roughly 15,000 people.”
“Small.”
“I guess you can say that.”
Emma moved the eight files towards Astrid, every single atom of her being vibrating with tension. “Out of these eight files, do you know any of them personally?”
Astrid looked startled by the question. She gave Emma a long inquisitive look before opening each file and rattling off what she knew about each one.
“I don’t know Teresa...I don’t know Kayla either...or Laura….but I know Brenda. She dated my brother. They have two kids named Tony and Alana. Alison….if it’s the Alison I know, she left the Vineyard back in the tenth grade. Jen used to be friends with my brother but something happened and I don’t know what. Julia and Sarah were the mean girls growing up. Julia is married and owns a bed and breakfast in Chilmark and Veronica owns Vineyard Scoops in Edgartown.”
And just like that, all the energy, all the hope that Emma had, died. She felt like a popped balloon, scattered and deflated. Another dead end. She wanted to be angry. She wanted to be sad. She wanted to feel something but all she felt was numb.
“Thank you for your time,” Emma said after a moment before gathering all the strength she had left and standing up.
“I’m sorry.” Astrid was confused.
“None of these women are who I’m looking for.”
It wasn’t until she felt the hospital and was back by the docks that Emma felt something. A powerful and raw rage burned in her veins. She wanted to scream but she settled to for kicking a trash can and startling a small colony of seagulls.
Drawing a heavy breath, she turned her phone back on. She regretted the decision almost instantly. Twenty missed calls and nine messages left for her. All from the same number.
“Jesus Killian,” she mumbled under her breath as she called her voicemail.
“You have nine new messages…first message received today at 12:05pm...Swan! Where are you! I woke up and you were gone! Your yellow death trap is-” Emma deleted the message before it finished.
“Next new message received today at 12:34pm...Swan! Where are you! I’ve been looking everywhere-”  She hit the delete button again.
“Next new message received today at 12:46pm...Swan, it’s me. I’m hoping you just went into town and got Granny’s or something...I’m going to go down and meet you. Call me back when you get this.”
“Next new message received today at 1:13pm...I just stopped by Granny’s...Ruby said she hasn’t seen you...Where are you? Please call me back.”
“Next new message received today at 1:19pm...Swan! I’m worried now! Where are you? I don’t understand what’s going on or why you won’t answer your talking phone.”
“Next new message received today at 1:27pm...Swan...please just answer me...I want to know what’s going on…Just talk to me…”
“Next new message received today at 1:31pm…I don’t know where you are but please just call me. I just want to know you’re okay.”
“Next new message received today at 1:45pm...You left me...”
She dropped her phone. All the emotion she thought she would feel after her latest failure came at the broken and defeated tone of Killian’s voice. Tears welled in the corners of her eyes and she held her hand up to her face in order to stifle the cry that desperately wanted escape her lips. She felt like the world’s biggest asshole.
She took a moment to try and gather herself, wiping at her sniffling nose as she stared out into the marina, watching seagulls dive at the water in search of fresh prey. She almost forgot to listen to the final voice message that Killian had left her.
“...End of new message. To listen to it again...press one...To save it...press two...to erase it...press three…”
She pressed down on the first option, knowing it would be unpleasant and Killian would more than likely be screaming at her but there was a part of her, the self-loathing part, that felt she deserved it.
“New message received today at 2:56pm…Emma…” The way he said her name wasn’t angry. It was strained and filled with an emotion that words could not identify but she knew it on a fundamental level. Her blood went cold in her veins.
Something was wrong.
“Emma…” Killian repeated again and his time his voice wavered a bit. “The pelts...The pelts on Gold’s property...they’re...They’re selkie pelts.”
“Oh shit,” she whispered as the color drained from her face.
She had left Killian alone in Menemsha with a man who more likely than not hunted his kind. And more than that, she had left him without any means to defend himself; her taser and pistol were in the glove compartment of her car. Now, she was officially the world’s biggest asshole.
In the long list of self-imposed rules that Emma Swan had, near the top of the list was that she didn’t push the Bug faster than sixty miles per hour. There were practical reasons for this, mainly because the Bug was nearly two decades old and she didn’t fancy replacing it any time soon. She pressed the pedal to the floor as she raced down State Road and North Road on her way back to Menemsha, the needle on her speedometer jumping between seventy-five and eighty miles per hour.
She may have nearly killed more than a dozen rabbits on her way.
The Bug made its grievances known, sputtering and whining as she came to a grinding halt in front of the beach house. Emma barely acknowledged it over the thundering of her heart ramming against her chest as her eyes scanned the property, hoping against hope to see any sign that Killian was in the house and that he was alright.
There were no lights on in the house, but she didn’t expect any. Killian was practically an old man and had an almost amusing dislike for electricity. He had a habit of leaving the lights off as long as possible until he couldn’t read without them. It made Emma privately question a lot of what happened while he was stuck with Cora and her daughter during his five years stuck on land.
“Killian?” She called almost tentatively when she stepped into the house.
Only silence came to greet her. The stillness of the house unnerved her and she could feel her anxiety skyrocket in response.
“Killian!”
Various scenarios flashed into her mind but at the forefront was seeing his pelt hanging from the blood soaked rack on the front lawn of Gold’s property. Immediately, she scrambled up the stairs and into the guest bedroom. She didn’t bother with any pretenses. She knew exactly what she was looking for and where it was. She made a beeline for the large white dresser and pulled open the third drawer.
The sight of Killian’s pelt caused her to let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Without thinking, she pulled it out of the drawer and brought it to her face. She buried her nose in the thick fur, trying to take comfort in the fact that it was still in the house and not on the rack up the road.
She was almost surprised at how soft it was. Emma didn’t have much experience with fur, let alone seal fur but it felt incredibly silky and all she wanted to do was keep it against her skin.
“Swan?”
Emma froze, her cheek still rubbed against his pelt as she craned her head towards the doorway. He was looking at her with a guarded expression, shoulders tense and hands curled into tight fists. If she didn’t know any better, she would say that he was preparing himself for a fight.
“Where the fuck were you?” she hissed. “I got your message and I was scared out of my mind!”
“Got my messages, did you?” he asked, crossing his arms in front of his chest and raising his eyebrows at her. The coolness of his tone nearly made her flinch.
“Yes. I freaked out! You can’t leave messages like that and just run off! You could have been hurt! You could have been killed! I was fucking terrified that I was going to come home and see your pelt out there on that fucking rack!”
“I could say the same to you, love.”
“This isn’t a game, Killian!”
“I never said it was. I’m merely pointing out the hypocrisy as I’m seeing it.”
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to quell the chaotic squall of emotions that wanted to bubble up to the surface. She wanted to be angry. She wanted to lash out but she couldn’t necessarily deny the truth in his words.
“I should have called you back, I’m so-” “No, it shouldn’t even have gotten to that point,” he cut her off. “You should have woken me up, Emma! We’re supposed to be partners!”
“We’re not supposed to be anything.” The words leapt from her throat before she could stop them.
As soon as she said them, Killian reared back as if her words had hit him with physical force. He stared at her as if he had never seen her before in his life. They stood there for a brief moment in tense silence. The distance between them was only about eight feet but it felt much larger than that. It felt like a canyon that Emma wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to bridge.
“Where were you?” she asked again, this time in a softer tone.
Killian looked somewhat bereft, swallowing his words and looking away from her. For a moment, Emma wasn’t sure he was going to answer her.
“I went into the house.”
She gasped at his explanation, staring at him in disbelief. “You didn’t. Please tell me you didn’t, Killian.”
“Considering all of today’s revelations, I’m shocked you care.”
“Of course I care! You could have been killed!”
“He wasn’t there,” he replied, still not looking at her. “He...I...He doesn’t just keep the pelts, Emma. There was a jar on the mantle...It was full of teeth...”
A cold shiver went down Emma’s spine. Ruby’s warning from her first day in Menemsha echoed in her head and a part of her wished she had given it more thought.
“How many?”
“I didn’t count,” Killian laughed humorously. A brittle smile crossed his lips and it made Emma feel sick. “I didn’t get close enough. I didn’t want to but countless...That whole place reeks of blood.”
“You shouldn’t have gone in there, Killian.”
His eyes cut to her. “And what should I have done, Swan? Waited for you? You cut out of here so swiftly, I wasn’t sure you were even going to come back.”
“Of course I was coming back. Don’t be an idiot. But Killian, think about this. Gold owns this town. No one knows who you are. You technically don’t exist here. He could have gotten to you and no one except me would have known something happened to you.”
“I’m very much aware of that, Swan.”
“Are you?”
“Yes, despite what you think, I’m not just a dumb animal. I’m quite intelligent despite your constant willingness to overlook that fact.”
“I know you’re smart-” “Yet you insist on treating me as I’m nothing more than dumb pet, not even worthy of leaving a note or even communicating with. Are you going to get me a ball to play with next? Make me eat out of a bowl?”
“You’re making a bigger deal of this than it actually it is,” she said with a roll of her eyes.
“No. I’m just seeing the clear picture. You don’t trust me, or anyone for that matter! You would rather be alone than let yourself get burned again! Whoever he is, he must have done quite the number on you that you would rather be unhappy and alone than take any risks and let anyone in. Being alone is a bitter existence, take it from someone who knows.”
“Oh! Because you know everything!” Emma jeered.
“When it comes to being alone? Yes! I told you what happened to me. I told you about losing my family, losing Milah. I’m not unsympathetic to your plight, Emma, but you need to get it through your head that you’re not alone.”
She wanted to punch him; wanted nothing more than to break his nose. He was so full of shit and she couldn’t stand the sight of him.
“Oh fuck you,” she snarled. “Stop the bullshit. You don’t actually care. The only reason you’re still standing here is because you’re trapped. As soon as this is over, you’re just going to back. You won’t even blink.”
“If you honestly still believe that then I can’t help you,” he said softly with a disappointed look on his face. He ran his fingers through his hair before looking back at her with a beseeching expression. “Look, I can’t do this right now. Just give me back my pelt.”
Emma froze. Her mind went blank at his request and she stared down at the pelt in her hands. Her fingers were curled into it so tightly that her skin was stretched white over her knuckles. She knew that the appropriate response was to give it back to him and let him go on his merry way but she couldn’t bring herself to let go of it. Without thinking, she instead tightened her own hold on it.
Killian stared at her, absolutely stunned. There was no mistaking the look of betrayal in his eyes. He stretched out his hand and Emma couldn’t help but notice that it was trembling.
“Emma…” He sounded broken.
Reluctantly, she let go of his pelt; depositing it in his hand before she could think more on her hesitation. She practically ran past him and took sanctuary in her room, trying to put as much distance as she could between them.
The tears didn’t come until she closed the door and it was firmly against her back.

Remembering David Bowie With His Experimental, Anthemic "Heroes"
It was just over two years ago that David Bowie released his final effort, Blackstar, on his 69th birthday, knowing all too well that it would be last. On January 10, two days later, Bowie passed away as a result of liver cancer. The music world took a huge hit that day, losing not only a brilliant musician, but a true inspiration. Two years later, it still feels like there's a missing gap in music - even if he wasn't the most relevant in the years leading to his death, his presence was always known and his influence great. It's easy to recall the legend and the inspiration he was, and today we'll be remembering David Bowie with his experimental, anthemic "Heroes".
"Heroes" was released at a very particular time for Bowie. It was part of his Berlin era, where he began weaning off of drug use and began reflecting on life. Such sentiments can be heard in the Orwellian, dystopian tinged 'Sons Of The Silent Age,' where he builds upon characters that could have come straight from George Orwell's 1984. He had turned a new page, and with his new view of life he took a new view of his music, as well. The latter half of "Heroes" is largely instrumental, trippy in its textures and magical in their setting. 'V-2 Schneider' is funky and very new-age, paying tribute to Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider and the influence he brought into Bowie's music. 'Sense Of Doubt' is darker, minimalist in its noir atmosphere before 'Neuköln' serves as a figurative counterpart for 'Songs Of The Silent Age' as Bowie delves into a dystopian world with only sonic soundscapes to back him. 'Moss Garden' serves as a short reprieve between the two, being pure and oriental, with the feeling of floating into space adding to its character.
"Heroes" was Bowie's second album of 1977, but it shows no sign of wear. Introduced by the punchy, fun, and risqué lyricism of 'Beauty and The Beast,' the album jumps straight in with energy. 'Joe The Lion' brings Bowie's signature flamboyancy in every aspect of the track, from the rambunctious guitars to the chaotic vocals. There's a lot going on in the song to make it sound very frantic, but there is a sense of togetherness that ties it all together. 'Blackout' has a similarly frantic-yet-plotted sound to it. Bowie did not rely on crazy layers to make the music memorable; closing track 'The Secret Life Of Arabia' is much more reserved (though still with the signature Bowie wildness) and much more reflective, the song being a reflection on his behavior prior to this era of his life. "Heroes" has an overarching sense of inevitability, found either in the chaos and fun, of-the-moment sounds or the explorations of different worlds in the instrumentals, and this is best summed up in iconic title track '"Heroes",' where Bowie ponders over impermanence. There's comfort in his optimistic view of things, saying it's okay that things to not last, for that gives us reason to cherish the moment. Somethings and some people don't have to be remembered forever; instead, "We can be heroes, just for one day."
David Bowie's legacy is one that is impossible to contest. He's the man that made art come to life and gave so many inspiration and courage to be themselves. While remembering David Bowie with his experimental, anthemic "Heroes", it's almost humbling to see an artist be so true and honest even in a period of uncertainty of himself. Bowie left a gap in this world once he left, but he will not soon be forgotten. He lives on in every day and every moment.

Wands? WANDS!
Eren Jaeger • 15” • Ash • Phoenix feather • Clings to its one true master and ought not to be passed on or gifted from the original owner because it will lose power and skill; not lightly swayed from their beliefs or purposes; may be stubborn and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant • Cause we all know Eren’s a little shit
Levi Ackerman • 12” • Aspen • Thestral tail hair • An accomplished duelist or destined to be so; particularly suited to martial magic; for the strong-minded and determined; attracted by quests and new orders; revolutionarist • Auror
Mikasa Ackerman • 12 3/4” • English Oak • Dragon heartstring • Demands partners of strength, courage and fidelity; owners have powerful intuition and an affinity with the natural magical world • Mikasa’s one of those naturally gifted individuals
Armin Arlert • 10” • Willow • Dragon heartstring • Owner has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it; selects those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn; well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic • This wand wood described Armin right on point, self-explanatory
Jean Kirstein • 13 1/2” • Poplar • Unicorn tail hair • Integrity; seeks consistency, strength and uniform power in owner; always happiest when working with an owner of clear moral vision • Jean’s one of those characters that’s well-rounded. I picked this wood with the Jean in episode 8 in mind.
Annie Leonhart • 11 2/3” • Pine • Veela hair • Typically chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious; owners usually live very long lives; enjoys being used creatively; will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells; most sensitive to non-verbal magic • I imagine that’s how everyone sees Annie mostly, someone who’s an enigma.
Bertolt Hoover • 12” • Cedar • Kelpie mane • Has a strength of character and an unusual loyalty; carries the potential to be a frightening adversary which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them • Because he seems like a gentle giant, many don’t try to challenge him. Surprise, surprise when he turns out to be the mighty colossal titan, huh?
Reiner Braun • 12 3/4” • Fir • Dragon heartstring • Suited to transfiguration; favours owners of focused, strong-minded, and intimidating demeanour; demands staying power and strength of purpose; has subsequently helped passed owner through mortal peril unscathed • Reiner’s survived rather long, considering his losses and mental issues. He must have a strength that can’t be seen that keeps him going. I imagine that’s what keeps him alive and moving forward.
Connie Springer • 10 3/4” • Spruce • Dragon heartstring • Typically matched with bold spell-casters with a good sense of humour; intensely loyal; capable of producing particularly flamboyant and dramatic effects; requires a firm hand (often appears to have its own ideas about what magic it ought to be called upon to produce) • Connie’s like a Ron or any Weasley really.
Sasha Blouse • 13 • Redwood • Kelpie mane • Owner possess an admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, and to snatch advantage from catastrophe. • If anyone has luck on their side, it would be Sasha. She’s one of those characters that surprises you.
Krista Historia Reiss • 12 • Pear • Thestral tail hair • Prefers a small owner with a temper several times their size; popular and well-respected; lovely personality; warm and friendly, until you cross them, then they'll give you such a telling off you'll swear you're being actually whipped • Does this need an explanation? Haha.
Ymir • 15 1/2” • Ivy • Veela hair •
Marco Bott • 13 3/4” • Alder • Dragon heartstring • Owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable; best suited to non-verbal spell work • Marco seemed like a very likeable companion amongst his comrades, even though his existence was short-lived.
Hange Zoe • 12” • Hornbeam • Phoenix feather • Selects owner with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession–or more kindly, vision–which will almost always be realised; adapts very quickly to their owner’s style of magic; if personalized, others will find wand extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells; absorbs their owner’s code of honour; will refuse to perform acts–whether for good or ill–that do not tally with their master’s principles • Hange’s very much a my way, or I-leave-you-in-the-dust kind of person. Her ideals or interests stand above her morality and logic sometimes, almost like an obsession. Many can’t understand her eccentricness, so I thought that Hornbeam’s nature to inhibit others from using it followed closely to that logic.
Erwin Smith • 10 1/2” • Vine • Unicorn tail hair • Owners seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best; strongly attracted to personalities with hidden depths • If I was to describe Erwin Smith, this would be it.
Mike Zacharias • 11 3/4” • Black Walnut • Dragon heartstring • Owner is a master of good instincts and powerful insight; abnormally attuned to inner conflict; loses power dramatically if owner practices any form of self-deception • Mike has good intuition, particularly because of his sense of smell apparently. So I sought a wand wood that would focus on this intuition of his.
Nanaba • 13” • Mahogany • Kelpie mane • Symbolises strength, safety, protectiveness, and practicality. • Although her appearance was brief, she made a lasting impact on me with her fierceness in protecting her squad and duty to the Survey Corps.
Dot Pixis • 11” • Beech • Unicorn tail hair • Owner is typically wise beyond their years or rich in understanding and experience; capable of a subtlety and artistry; performs very weakly for the narrow-minded and intolerant • Pixis is far from narrow-minded and intolerant. He considers options that can’t even be fathomed by most. And even though the speech he made made him seem intolerant of those who wished not to battle, to me it seemed like a courtesy that he was extending to those individuals. Quite tolerant if you ask me now.
Hannes • 11 1/4” • Larch • Dragon heartstring • Instills courage and confidence; looking for owner who has hidden talents and unexpected effects; owner may never realize the full extent of their considerable talents until paired • The last part made me think of how Hannes “redeemed” himself at the end of Season 2. Although he failed in avenging Eren’s mother, he didn’t fail strength and integrity that day, which takes courage and confidence.
Petra Ral • 12” • Rowan • Veela hair • Protection; generally produces powerful, hard to break Defensive Charms; associated with pure-hearted individuals; can match or even outperform others in duels • Petra is like our pure-hearted senpai that we didn’t know could wield a bloody katana.
Oluo Bozado • 12” • Red Oak • Dragon heartstring • Hot-tempered; quick-witted and adaptable; owner has unusually fast reactions • Oluo is always ready to pick a fight with anyone. When we saw him fight briefly, you could tell he really was quick-witted and adaptable (when they lost a comrade and their formation). He truly proved his capabilities and bragging true then.
Gunther Schultz • 13” • Reed • Kelpie mane • Best suited to those who are bold and eloquent speakers, and prove to be very protective of their friends • I had difficulty with Gunther, but based on what wiki said about Gunther “being the only one to ask Eren for proof that he was not hostile” made me choose Reed as his wood wand.
Eld Jinn • 11” • Cherry • Dragon heartstring • Owner has exceptional self-control and strength of mind • Eld was basically like the second-in-command, this seemed like characteristics of a leader.
Moblit • 13 1/3” • Rowan • Dragon heartstring • Protection; generally produces powerful, hard to break Defensive Charms; associated with pure-hearted individuals; can match or even outperform others in duels • I tried real hard not to duplicate any wand wood, but I had to do this one for Moblit cause he’s always looking out for his crazy squad leader.
Ian Dietrich • 10 3/4” • Ebony • Dragon heartstring • Will hold fast to his or her beliefs no matter what the external pressure; will not be swayed lightly from their purpose • Picked this with episode 12 in mind. Ian ordered everyone to continue protecting Eren because he believed that Eren would be able to do what he was tasked to do, or he believed in Dot Pixis’ decision. Regardless, he did not falter in that particularly chaotic instant.
Rico Brzenska • 14” • Hazel • Dragon heartstring • Reflects its owner’s emotional state; works best with a user who understands and can manage their own feelings; wand will absorb energy and discharge it unpredictably if its owner has recently lost their temper or suffered a serious disappointment; detects water underground • I didn’t really like Rico and don’t really understand her still, but she is a squad leader clearly attached to her comrades. She shows greater wavering emotions than most of the squad leaders; someone who may let their emotions get the better of them. And I think she knows this may not be a good thing for someone of her caliber and position, but nonetheless, she can’t help it.
