this book. I first came across it through the old 31-days community on livejournal - incandescens posted a prompt set drawn entirely from quotations from it for the month of april 2009. it was the first bujold novel I ever read and it's still one of the best. it tastes like the rotting wet leaves in autumn, and those dreams where you're trapped in some sort of moral maze and you can't find your way through, and the crystal clarity of the light at sunrise.

You cannot outguess the gods. Hold to virtue—if you can identify it—and trust that the duty set before you is the duty desired of you. And that the talents given to you are the talents you should place in the gods’ service. Believe that the gods ask for nothing back that they have not first lent to you. Not even your life.
