AN: Next update will post Monday the 23rd , same time and same place! Going to start working on updating my game etc. <3
Transcript under the cut
Siobhan: There you are! Our guest of honor tucked away in the corner. You’re not hiding, are you?
Nancy: I never really liked crowds.
Siobhan: That won’t do, Nancy. Come. Lets chat.
Siobhan: You know, the way you handled Becca the other night is admirable. I wouldn’t have done anything less if it were my man she was pawing after.
Nancy: Listen, I’m not a violent person. I shouldn’t have hit her.
Siobhan: It hardly matters. It’s about respect.
Siobhan: You have the means to be the most powerful woman in the world. Your family runs a multi million dollar company. Your name is on every recognizable building across the globe. Girls like Becca will dream of the day they can write you a check so she can raise her brood of rowdy children in one of your flawlessly designed properties.
Siobhan: You’re a star, Nancy. It’s time you show everyone what it means to be a Landgraab. You can start by becoming a Theta.
Siobhan: By the way, your mother just arrived!
Nancy: Hello Mother.
Queenie: Nancy.
Nancy: Father couldn’t make it?
Queenie: No, I’m afraid he’s tied up in a prior engagement. Besides, I try not to bore him with my personal affairs. [murmurs] How provocative, these pieces.
Queenie: So you’ve made friends with the daughter of an adulterer. Is that what you thought would impress me? Well, at least she’s proactive. Your lack of involvement in any clubs or organizations shows just how lazy you are. It’s almost as if we’ve sent you to university to piss away our money yet again. When will you prove to me that you’re worth half the trouble you put your father and me through? And for the love of God, stop biting your nails! It’s disgusting.
Professor Munch: -right, Nancy?
Nancy: I’m sorry, what was that?
Professor Munch: This model is absolutely stunning! Marvelous, even.
Nancy: R-really? Thank you, Professor.
Professor Munch: Ah! No wonder! Your drawings are very compelling. The way you blend functionality with aesthetics is brillant! A true prodigy!
Professor Munch: I am very proud of you, Nancy. Keep it up.
Nancy: Hi Professor. I know I’m a little early for office hours, but I really wanted your thoughts on my blueprints.
Professor Munch: Nancy! Are you kidding! Anything for my star pupil. Take a seat.
Professor Munch: If I’m being honest, I don’t have much critique.
Nancy: Staying on top of my grades is really important to me. My GPA is 3.7 but I know I can do more to improve. I can do better-
Professor Munch: [huffs affectionately] Nancy! You are my brightest and best student! I’d say it’s in your blood. I haven’t seen such vision and passion in my student’s work since I taught your brother.
Nancy: Nathan was your student?
Professor Munch: Oh, Nathan was my star! In the short time I spent with him, he has shown me what true artistry looks like. That kid had an eye for detail. He always spoke so fondly of his little baby sister, Nan; he’d call you. [sighs] I miss him dearly.
Professor Munch: I thought of quitting and getting back into the field after he passed. I was devastated when I found out about the accident. My partner pushed me to continue teaching. She knew there was nothing I loved more than handing the tools to brillant kids like you and Nathan to shape our future.
Nancy: Partner? [frowns] Your...partner?
Professor Munch: Monica. We were roommates in college and have been stuck to each other like glue since!
Nancy: So, she’s your best friend?
Professor Munch: Oh certainly. My best friend, my muse, my partner.
Nancy: What about your husband?
Professor Munch: Husband?
Nancy: I- sorry. Nevermind.
Professor Munch: Talk to me, dear. What’s on your mind?
Nancy: I guess I don’t understand. You’re wearing a ring but you have no photos of your husband. You seem...close with her, in the photo.
Professor Munch: I was married once. We have three children together. Sweetest man alive. We’re still friends to this day. We both realized that we had our hearts in different places. In the end, I had my Monica. My soulmate.
Nancy: [sobs quietly]
Professor Munch: Oh, no. Nancy? Dear, are you alright?
Professor Munch: [softly] Oh, sweet darling. You’re hurting, aren’t you? Can I hold you? Is that ok?
Nancy: [nods once]
Professor Munch: You let it all out, you hear me? Just let it all out. I got you.
Nancy Narrates: [I wondered what kind of person I’d be had my mother held me like this]
Professor Munch: There’s a small club that I support that meets every Friday in the commons. I think you should stop by.
Nancy: Thank you Professor but, I think I’ve already decided to join a sorority.
Professor Munch: I’ll tell you what, it’s not something you have to join or commit to, but I think there’s something to gain by coming. Plus, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. You two have a lot in common.
Morgan: Holy shit, hey! It’s Nancy Landgraab! Get over here!

9 and 23 for the ask game?👀
9. How do you worldbuild?
Come up with an idea -> ask a lot of questions about it. Eventually you answer enough questions, that the answers grow legs and start running.
An example from one of my OCs because I never talk about those guys.
Idea: A paladin trapped in the service of a cruel god, who is still able to talk to and keep friends outside of their order.
How is the paladin trapped in service? A god can call anyone, but asumedly, anyone called can say no. And an evil god would probably be routed out of any Good pantheons. So how does a cruel or evil god get around that? Maybe the god has a usefulness that aligns with good, the objection is just in how they do that good?
Maybe the god is a god of sacrifice, and they help mortals with some things in exchange for service. In which case someone could be trapped into serving that god, but they're working ultimately for the greater good, so they don't immediately try to break free of it? Maybe serving the god is a rare ask, so people often take the risk.
This god then, is probably a god that preys on people in need. They have churches that pop up in areas torn by war, or disaster. They follow in the wake of plagues and disease, healing the sick, mending the wounded, housing the destitute. Most people are asked to repay the kindness with tithe or community service, but sometimes they are asks to repay the kindness with a child. That child then joins the god's service as a priest or a paladin.
What would a god like that ask in exchange for use of its power and magics? Given it's a god of sacrifice and exchange, and is inherently cruel in nature, maybe it asks for a meaningful offering? Something with emotional attachment? Maybe then, all of these paladins are given animals to take care of, plants to tend, life to grow, knowing that to do increasingly powerful miracles, they must suffer the loss of these things. At any point their god can demand something, and they must give it. Healing the wounded in the wake of a battle might be a smaller sacrifice, because a price will eventually be asked of those in need of the help. But calling forth power to aid yourself -- like, say, bringing back a friend from the brink of death -- might require killing a pet you've loved for several years, or sacrificing a part of your own body.
Now I've made a god whose temples are probably full of beasts and birds, and beautiful gardens. Decorated with gold and silver and artistry taken as payment from people saved, tended to by maimed priests and paladins, all of them steeped in the melancholic knowledge that, at any moment, know their god is cruel enough to ask the most precious things from them. But how can they refuse? If they don't give, if the god doesn't take, the world falls to ruin.
And now that I have a compelling god for my character to serve, and a reason for that character to serve that god, now I get to ask the character how they feel about serving that god -- and now I can build the character.
And that's how I worldbuild... everything.
The important thing about the questioning process is knowing that, just because it makes sense, doesn't mean it has to be rooted in reality, or have tons and tons of to-the-date history to be believable. It just has to have a logical progression.
23.What work of yours would you like to have the biggest impact on the fandom?
Oh huh. Hmm. Redstone and Skulk, probably. I would love to see more people come up with helsmets and the reasons for why they exist, what mirrors belong to who and why. In my mind, hels is so full of people, and I want to see people other than me filling it. I've kicked around making a helsmet oc expressly to encourage that [and also because it sounds fun], but I don't really have the time right now, and I don't even know what my mirror would even be so [shrug].

Just heard the Eddie Garcia Bill today (RIP King), and this reminded me of that time a film maker was invited to talk at our high school for our literature classes and he proudly showed his disturbing piece.
The short film was titled "The Compound" and it was pretty disturbing for high schoolers, but I don't remember our teachers handling the aftermath. So the film started with a bunch of big stars in a dark room, and they were being yelled, "Hubad! Hubad!" by a bunch of people from all corners. They were all in fear as they took off their clothes, completely nude! Only small rays from the flashlights are there, and sometimes, they were pointed at their faces. One unknown girl showed Glaiza de Castro a twenty pesos and shouted "Eto lang ang halaga mo sa compound!"
The filmmaker cut it to that, and proudly told us that they woke up those big stars at 4-5am in the morning. They were disoriented as the whole crew and the other unknown actors shouted "Hubad! Hubad!" at them, their expressions of fear were real! They stripped because they were scared. He went on to blab about the artistry, about invoking raw emotions from the actors, about cinema!
And I was there, a high schooler, sitting while not fully processing the short film for my young mind was too disturbingly absorbent. I was still pretentious about being an artist, pretending I appreciate the artistry of dark indie films, but that... that put a stop to it. It wasn't even a compelling film. Cinematography sucks. It looks like a budget film made by pretentious college kids who just wanna see naked people. Imagine being one of those big big stars who were traumatized by that filming, and for what? For a trashy end product?? And you cannot complain because The Director is King and you might be branded as someone 'who does not appreciate art'? And you have to keep it to your heart because you don't want people to actually see that film, it's just a short film anyway, not on cinemas. If you whistleblow, people might deliberately search for it. But no! A stupid director goes around schools showing it to high school students!
We needed that Eddie Garcia Bill. Because there are people out there who think they can power trip actors in the name of art. And the "Art" in question isn't even that good.

honestly, I saw Fear/Gibson live last year and I’d call them incompetent. Their skating is so small, the curves on the ice so much shallower than a team of that standing should be capable of. Guignard/Fabbri covered twice as much ice with half the effort. People pick on Lilah and act like Lewis is the second coming of Dean/Moir/Cizeron but he’s not *that* much better at the actual skating, he is visibly better but still not brilliant. But he moves like a floor dancer and that covers many sins. I don’t think it’s some grand conspiracy to elevate them - the Brits might have a rogue judge but they are not a powerhouse federation. They can’t compel whole panels to fall in line the way Russia, USA, France and Canada can. I think it’s a combination of a) Europe not wanting a North American monopoly while P/C are on hiatus and Russia remain banned and b) the ISU understanding they’re popular and they’re desperate for popularity. Casual audiences respond to them, I’ve seen it. They’re fun, they’re good looking, they’re easily digestible. I have a theory they’ll be dropped from serious contention once P/C return and Lajoie/Lagha are Canadian #1 once the older teams retire. Europe will then have their champions back. L/L can do the fun populist stuff but skate it well (their lyrical FD is beautiful but it’s programs like Thriller and Rio that should be their calling card going forward to set themselves apart - they’re aggressive, not pretty, don’t fall into the trap H/D did and try to contain the power). I wish Tessa was mentoring L/L instead.
i think we just disagree on that word incompetent - they're working hard and have improved. but it makes my heart sink when crowds go for the easy and gimmicky. they probably will get an ovation next week like Tessa said. but i still think that program is cheap, and if the judges go for it too, the system is garbage. because the skating and the program don't warrant top 5 in the world
i looked at F/G's IGs because i had to question whether they're popular. i don't really know of many current fans of theirs. Lilah has 15.6K followers. their team account 10.2K, Lewis 12.9K. compare that to Madi C 118K, Gabi P 173K, Isabella Flores 194K. team Koko has more than Lilah and Lewis. but it's true, i haven't found a European ice dance team who has more followers besides P/C. but idgi - it's nothing to stake the future of ice dance on your continent on. the crowds in the building like F/G, but is that translating outside, where most of the fans are? idk
for me, it's about how they're scoring consistently above teams who skate more beautifully, with power and artistry. skating with true quality is harder, or everyone would do it. hitting big accents or punching to the beat is easy. skating so that your line and entire body is expressive is hard. IAM is good at disguising weaknesses in their choreo - it's smart, but when it's this successful, i think it's bad for ice dance and feels fake
i love LaLa - they can do it all. i think it's how hard they can go at a Thriller program and be dazzlingly sharp and fast and also make you cry with an expressive program that makes them great. i'm so excited to see them again

Two questions:
1. You’ve mentioned before that you write on a very, very old laptop called Joshiba. Do you have your ATH and GF drafts backed up somewhere in case it dies? 2. Out of everything you’ve ever written, what’s your favorite sentence?
1. You’ve mentioned before that you write on a very, very old laptop called Joshiba. Do you have your ATH and GF drafts backed up somewhere in case it dies?
Oh yes. Data loss is one of my least favorite things. Losing some fanfic files on the family computer as a kid cemented that aversion into me. And yet I have lost data many times since then, most notably in 2010 when my laptop Archimedes died out of nowhere, which killed most of my music compositions from one of my most important periods.
I'm quite paranoid about data loss. These days I will typically make a backup every three or four months (or less if I have done a lot of writing or otherwise feel the need to back something up sooner), and I have more than one independent backup device.
I actually got a warning just this morning on my main computer about an impending hard drive failure, so I did a full backup of that one and ordered a replacement drive.
2. Out of everything you’ve ever written, what’s your favorite sentence?
That's a deliciously provocative question, and there are so many different ways I could tackle it.
It would very likely be a fiction sentence, as I both care about my fiction more and put more effort into editing and refining it. But I should at least mention that I've done some nonfiction sentences that I'm really proud of. I love it when I can elegantly bring a thesis together, or synthesize a truly fascinating new idea, or perfectly summarize a thing. In all cases, my great nonfiction sentences are masterpieces of insightfulness and clarity. Clarity and insightfulness are the common factors, the reason you would spend your precious time reading my often-verbose, self-indulgent ramblings.
I don't have any such sentences in mind off the top of my head, sadly, or I would happily share one. I suppose I can leave it to anyone who has been a longtime reader of my journal to volunteer any favorites they can think of.
To get on with the fiction:
I put a lot of thought into first sentences: the first sentence in an entire story; the first sentence in a chapter or section; the first sentence introducing a new character; their first sentence of dialogue. When it makes sense to do so, and when I have the opportunity, I also put a lot of thought into last sentences.
There are the "high art" sentences, the ones that attempt some feat of technical prowess or showcase my skills or artistry. These tend to be longer and/or highly stylistic.
There are the "punchy" sentences: short sentences that comprise their own paragraph to underscore a point, ideally to resounding effect.
There are sentences that I am personally biased toward for external reasons, such as ones involving Silence doing Silence stuff.
There are sentences that have deep, personal resonance for whatever reason.
There are the sentences that depart from literality and become in some way transcendental, often assuming an omniscient voice and openly musing in the company of the reader.
There are sentences that don't look like much on their own but become very powerful in context. (Not unlike the aforementioned "punchy" sentences.)
And of course there are miscellaneous sentences that I just like for whatever reason.
(It's also worth noting that, with the way I write, often the great stuff is only resolvable down to the paragraph level, not the level of individual sentences. And some of it is only resolvable down to the scene level, with no great sentences per se even if the scene itself is very strong.)
Different sentences can excel in different ways, each in turn making a compelling case to be my "favorite." I can like sentences because of some aspect of their structure—their rhythm, for instance, or their alliteration or some other literary quality, or their feel on the tongue or in the eye. Or I can like sentences because of their imagery, the contents they convey, irrespective of their structure. Or I can like them because of their meta function, their role in advancing or pulling together the story or important thoughts therein. And so on. I don't consider these various properties comparable, which makes it very difficult to conceive of one supreme sentence above all others.
Even if that weren't so, the way my memory works also makes it virtually impossible for me to select a favorite without going back and rereading all the fiction I've ever written (lol) or whatever subset thereof I think most likely to produce leading candidates for my favorite.
In lieu of this I am quite limited in what my memory is able to recall at the moment on its own. The sentence that has stuck with me the most in recent months is not especially remarkable on its own; it is one of those "Silence doing Silence stuff" sentences and it really loses a lot of its punch without the context of its paragraph and wider scene, and since it is also something of a spoiler I don't think I will post it here, but it's basically an affirmation of her power, which I love.
Since writing the previous paragraph I spent over an hour looking for a good sentence in order to give you something approaching a satisfying answer, but alack my brain was not plugged into creative writing mode at all today and so I have found this a most unapproachable, inapprehensible exercise tonight. It's funny how, some days, it's like the text itself changes. There are times when I absolutely love this stuff, and times when I just don't connect with it at all, and sadly today is one of the latter.
But perhaps if you could refine the question (and catch me on a better day)? I often find that this helps to unlock my mind, if the derivative question has some new substance which helps me to conceive of the query differently.
Anyway! I've written quite a few sentences in my life. Maybe, given my complete uselessness, it would be better to ask the people who have read some of them what they think. I'd be curious to know, myself.
I can tell you one of the leading candidates for my favorite sentences that I haven't written, however. It's from Dickens:
And Scrooge said often afterwards, that of all the blithe sounds he had ever heard, those were the blithest in his ears.
For context, the preceding sentence is:
He looked so irresistibly pleasant, in a word, that three or four good-humoured fellows said, "Good morning, sir! A merry Christmas to you!"
And I suppose that says a lot about me.

The Sandman Season 1 (2023)
Tumblr media
** Not a review, just wanting to write down some thoughts about media I've consumed to maybe look back on in the future
I don't really know what compelled me to watch this but it's safe to say I enjoyed it barring Dream of the Endless's (Tom Sturridge) voice direction. Besides that and some other minor gripes I had, it didn't take long for me to get captured in the Waking World and the Dreaming. It's not the best dark fantasy I've consumed, but it was enough to keep me wanting more each episode, especially after Chapter 3 (Dream a Little Dream of Me). When Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) was introduced, I didn't know what to expect. Necromancy, in my opinion, is hard to pull off, and sometimes feels overbearing depending on the performance, the environment, and the setting of the media, but it was done well enough for this show. It's only season 1, and since it's renewed, who knows in the future season(s).
The biggest highlight for me was the battle between Lucifer Morningstar/Samael (Gwendoline Christie) and Morpheus/Dream (Tom Sturridge) since it's not the typical battle you'd watch in fantasy media and let me just say my girl Gwendoline fucking killed her role as Samael. The battle, which I'd like to call the "I am..." game, between Samael and Morpheus with them using their powers to manifest something against what the other is having an actual affect to their being to me was fascinating. Admittedly, when I first watched the scene, I was very confused on what was happening, but upon the 2nd rewatch, it clicked and I was amazed by the direction, the set, and the artistry due to the threatening elegance that was portrayed. Side note, Gwendoline fucking killed it as Samael. Girl can do anything, and I hope we get to see more of her next season.
The reveal at the end was nothing I was expecting, but honestly, if I were Unity I'd also do both I mean, have you seen what Desire of the Endless looks like??? I want some of that. The sacrifice she made to save her great granddaughter and her great grandson is admirable and inspiring.

"The Chosen One" on Netflix
Yesterday afternoon, I thought I'd watch 15 minutes of a new Netflix series to see if it was any good. It only took that long for The Chosen One to hook me into a 6 hour binge that blew my mind.
A summary of the plot is not really as important as the overwhelming artistry of the film. Shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio, every scene, even wide vistas & towering lightning storms feels intimately intense. Fleeting mythic imagery entices the viewer into wondering what-the-heck is happening.
The story starts w/ its focus on a mother (Dianna Agron) & her son Jodie (Bobby Luhnow) fleeing unexplained but ominous danger. They settle in an impoverished village near the coast of Baja, Mexico. Both of their performances are compelling. Jodie, a previously unknown actor, projects a level of gravitas beyond his age. His self-contained persona dominates every scene he's in. Just look at him...
Tumblr media
Good grief! If I were a preteen girl, I'd idolize him. His big blue eyes are wide-open in a state of perpetual drug-induced wonder. His mother is drugging him to suppress his powers!
Yep, the series is based on a comic book--American Jesus. Like most graphic fantasy novels, this one goes over-the-top w/ nearly operatic scenarios that tumble like dominoes falling toward a resolution I was half-expecting & fully-hoping wouldn't happen.
I won't spoil a moment of this experience by revealing too much. This is MUST WATCH TV!

Jess should I watch Elvis?
yes, if for austin's kinetic performance alone! (i might be in love w him, though that's not entirely new, just elevated.) and also good music. i've been listening to so much of elvis' stuff and the vintage music/artists i love in general for the past week and it's nourishing to my soul.
biopics can be a tricky thing, and for me the importance lies in centering/revealing the subject's humanity amidst their unique qualities and flaws, and exploring the story in a way that feels empathetic and not exploitative (hence the screaming i did over a different movie, which doesn't even deserve to be labeled as a biopic, that shall not be named this summer), which this did. i was telling a friend, and my mom and i have discussed this many times over the years, but there's something heartbreaking and haunting to me about the fact that certain artists become so indelible in pop culture, so larger than life in that way, that the image of them takes over from the person, even from the artistry, and they become a caricature or a cardboard cutout of themselves. an icon, but no longer remembered as flesh and blood. there are a number of legends from those golden days of hollywood that this has happened to, most notably perhaps being marilyn and elvis. the tragedy of their respective stories comes into play there too, fixing them forever as that ending, those specific images. how do you overcome the iconography, so detached from agency and personhood, to re-center a human being? to not re-victimize them or overly distort what happened, and yet still tell it in a way that's a compelling narrative and can take some fictional license? it has to be measured so carefully. what got me with austin's performance is - you can go to vegas and find an impersonator on every corner if you want. he wasn't doing an impersonation, he was finding the vulnerability and electricity in the actual person, and that makes all the difference.
i will say though, i've been sitting here contemplating - what does baz luhrmann put into his films that very specifically alters my brain chemistry, but always in a slow drip, sneakily inescapable way? i'll be like, well, that sure was a movie, and think i moved on, but then days later be obsessively tantalized about aspects of it. this has happened three times in my life, and previously i might've thought it was more of a symptom of my teen years, but no, it still apparently rings true. i don't even entirely understand why he made some of the frenetic directing choices he made or certain moments of the framing or whatever tom hanks was doing, but the themes it touches on regarding the power and influence of music and the social upheaval of the time and what creates an indelible legacy, and that center of humanness i mentioned that's existent in the portrayal, can i stop thinking about it? no, i cannot. so be warned it might make you feel unhinged <3
edit, 2/3/23: over a month later and two subsequent viewings, including on the big screen (gorgeous showstopping spectacular) and i just have to remark that my thoughts on the editing and on tom hanks' performance have radically changed, but i think it's because you need to see it more than once to even begin to absorb it. now that i fully understand those aspects of the film and have seen it in all its grandeur and its empathy, i appreciate the framing, and the art direction/editing/costuming/everything is so breathtaking. it's so clearly a work of love and passion on everyone's part and the pinnacle of baz's particular vision as a filmmaker in many respects. it has elvis' spirit in all of its essence. i stand by everything i said about austin (and then some, he is phenomenal), it's like he was meant to embody this, but as a whole i underappreciated the movie as a whole during this first viewing, and now...it's impacted me deeply and i'm grateful for that, i love it very much.

At HoochieCon, Black women’s sexual power and agency take center stage
(I did not make this up. This is an article taken from the LA Times
Tumblr media
Event creater and curator Zorine Truly dances at the HoochieCon party on Saturday in Glendale. (Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times)
BY MARTINE THOMPSONJUNE 23, 2023 9:53 AM PT
When taking in the images of Black women that adorn the gallery space at HoochieCon, it’s clear the creator and curator, Zorine Truly, 37, has a major soft spot for hoochie mamas — fly Black women who harness the power of their sexuality and creative expression as they see fit. Photos on the walls of the Glendale event space Junior High depict women with artful multilayered updos reaching for the heavens, big smiles sparkling with gold embellishments, vibrant acrylic nails as imaginative as they are long. Nostalgic portraits of friends turning up before the social media boom are spotlighted along with cherished TV and movie characters.
These women may not have an abundance of money, but they draw on their unique flair, swagger and innovation as a tool to show up authentically and claim space in a society that tells them they should shrink. Truly knows these women — often classified as hoochies — have always been more than a punchline in a movie or a mood-board fixture divorced from their humanity. Hoochies flip narrow, misogynoir-fueled ideas of what a good or respectable or fashionable woman can look like and look damn good while doing it. And as Truly explains to The Times, hoochies — in their many iterations over the decades — have long set the blueprint for popular trends and it’s high time they received their flowers.
“Simply put, hoochies are pioneers — for so many different genres of things,” says Truly, a North Memphis, Tenn., native and self-anointed Hoochie Historian who translates her research on hoochie culture into bite-sized videos. Interspersed with glimpses into her personal life and adventures around Los Angeles (like casually cutting up with Janelle Monaé at their Age of Pleasure party), Truly’s posts range from celebrations of prominent women and rituals in hoochie culture and their undeniable impact on fashion, beauty, art and pop culture to thoughtful deep dives that contextualize significant cultural moments, like Brandy and Monica’s ’90s smash hit “The Boy Is Mine.”
Tumblr media

The pull to honor this rich legacy in a major way compelled Truly to launch HoochieCon, a group exhibit featuring mixed-media art and music honoring Black women pioneers at the center of hoochie culture. The exhibit, which was co-organized and hosted by the popular queer community space Junior High last weekend, kicked off with three days of activations. The exhibit’s opening day featured the type of moody bisexual lighting that promises a good time. Attendees from near and far came decked with joyful energy and their interpretation of comfortable hoochie attire, and a stripper pole that was added to the gallery for the special day was put to good use thanks to the trio of dancers (Phoenix, Ziyah, Brooklyn) who blessed the space with their skills.
The intention at the heart of HoochieCon resonated with a range of Angelenos on their own journey of discovering and embracing their authentic self and sexual agency, including Earyn McGee, 28. “I am the oldest daughter in a Black family and definitely felt like I had to perform a certain way of being and show up physically a certain way,” she says, noting the baby steps she’s been taking toward less filtered self-expression now that she’s grown. “Even with my outfit for today, I was a little bit nervous but I was just like, ‘I’m trying to be in theme. This was an idea that I had and I’m just gonna go with it.’ I’m trying to do all the things that would’ve made kid-me happy.”
The next two days had a little something for everyone: a panel discussion moderated by Truly, a dance party (more on that shortly) and an outdoor market featuring Black vendors. Chef Rochelle Tyler of Selah Bakery served up vegan cookies with flavors like Hollaback Girl (banana pudding) and Babycakes (strawberry shortcake), while Cake Chemistry offered its boozy miniature red velvet cakes with Hennessy-infused caramel sauce and cream cheese buttercream. There were beanie purses and clothing designs by Beautiful Soul Childz for the avant-garde fashionista who’s gonna serve a look if nothing else, handcrafted jewelry by Skiin & Tones and Studio Ebunoluwa, Hooch Juice travel tumblers by High Standards Cosmetics to help the hoochies hydrate in style, and more.
With music being so deeply intertwined with hoochie culture, Truly knew she had to have space devoted to everybody coming together, dressing up and having fun on the dance floor. The experience of dancing and moving her body to good music in the company of new and old friends makes her feel tapped into a particular feeling of power. “There’s something powerful about dancing despite everything that’s going on outside and despite what’s in the news or maybe what’s happening when you go back to your house,” Truly says. “There’s freedom in getting together in community and seeing Black faces celebrate, regardless of what circumstance they face every day. There’s power, there’s freedom and there’s happiness in it for me.”
DJ Space Age was on music duty for HoochieCon’s dance-floor celebration and did not disappoint. Bangers from the ’90s and early 2000s that stand the test of time boomed through the speakers, eventually teasing out the most committed of wall huggers to let loose and shake a little something.
Tumblr media
Dani Daniels poses for a portrait at Hoochie Con.(Jason Armond/Los Angeles Times)
For Danielle Daniels, 29, the visual nods to the ’90s throughout HoochieCon resonated instantly. “My style of dressing is ’90s style so I love the environment of HoochieCon. The bamboo earrings, the jackets, the clothes and the nails — it’s nice to come out and see a lot of girls with the same culture and idea of things and to be able to express ourselves together as Black women,” says Daniels, who considers Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle’s iconic BAPS characters major hoochie inspo for herself and her best friend. “I wanted to come and celebrate ourselves and the beauty that we bring to beauty culture and everything.”
Tumblr media
Art on display at HoochieCon.(Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times)
As Truly takes in the fruits of her labor, and the community that has formed around her first HoochieCon, she’s mindful to acknowledge the importance of giving respect and reverence to women who have pioneered and “touched popular culture for so long” without reaping the benefits or even receiving credit. “Not only did they pioneer it, they also had to suffer for it,” Truly says. “They had to suffer to wear their hair the way they wanted to. They had to suffer to wear their nails the way they wanted to, and gold teeth, and to be sexually liberated. They had to suffer to shine.”
One day, years later, people will look at images of Truly’s HoochieCon celebration. “What do you hope they take away?” I ask the Hoochie Historian.
“I hope they take away from HoochieCon the importance of being yourself, no matter what people might judge you by,” says Truly, releasing a deep exhale, eyes watering as she processes the idea of HoochieCon reaching people generations into the future. “It’s important to be happy with how you look, how you feel, how you dress, and the choices that you make, and that is the most important thing. I want people, especially Black women, to take away that they can be fully themselves no matter what that looks like and still be worthy of all the good things.”

Ah, Anna Karenina, the great novel of Tolstoy's! A work of passion, of love, and of moralistic zeal. And yet, I must say, I find myself somewhat disappointed.
Let me explain. You see, Tolstoy seems to have approached this novel with a preconceived idea of what it should be. He wants it to be a treatise on the nature of love, of the emptiness of high society, and of the sanctity of the rural life. And so, he writes with a heavy hand, filling the pages with his preachings, his moralistic rants, and his over-simplifications of complex human emotions.
What is lost in this approach is the subtlety, the nuance, the artistry that makes a great novel. Tolstoy's characters are not people, but caricatures, mere vessels for his ideas. Anna Karenina herself is a prime example of this. She is not a woman, driven by her own desires, her own passions, but rather a symbol of fallen women, a cautionary tale of what happens when one goes against the moral code.
And so, as I read Anna Karenina, I cannot help but feel that Tolstoy has missed the mark. He has created a work that is more a moralistic tract than a novel, a work that is more concerned with telling us what to think than with showing us the world.
But, I must admit, despite its flaws, there is something undeniably compelling about Anna Karenina. Perhaps it is the grandeur of its themes, the sweep of its story, or the depth of its characters. Whatever it is, there is a power to this novel that cannot be denied.
In conclusion, I would say that Anna Karenina is a flawed masterpiece, a novel that has its strengths, but also its weaknesses. It is a work that is worth reading, but with a critical eye, for there is much to be learned from its pages, both good and bad.

Unit 4 Blog Post
Art plays a prevalent role in nature interpretation. I believe my interest in environmental science, and the broader field of science, has foundational roots in the artistry displayed in museums and galleries I have visited throughout my life. Art is a medium that can spark discovery for a broad audience, as artistic expressions of nature are open to individual interpretation. People may connect emotionally to an ecological concept in a way that may not have been as impactful if conveyed through a lengthy presentation of miscellaneous facts.
For example, I have always found it fascinating how social media has become a space where so many people become aware of and emotionally moved by scientific facts, often presented in creative and compelling ways. The salmon run, for instance, is a key ecological event that impacts multiple trophic levels within an ecosystem. Creators on social media have crafted audiovisual storytelling of this event, showing salmon swimming upstream, combined with quotes about determination and melancholy music, creating moments of reflection on the circle of life. This kind of interpretive outreach has fostered greater awareness about the negative impacts of damming waterways on ecosystems.
Another example can be seen in videos depicting pigeons that were once domesticated by humans to be messengers, and how they’ve lost many natural behaviors over time. With the progression of technology, these messenger pigeons were abandoned, and many are now unable to adequately build nests or forage without human-provided food. These stories offer powerful, engaging interpretations that invite us to connect emotionally with an be aware of human impacts on nature.
When it comes to interpreting nature, presenting meaningful themes rather than solely thesis-based interpretations allows for a deeper connection. Multi-sensory presentations offer everyone—visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners—a way to engage with their surroundings. For example, during a treetop trekking and zipline experience through Whistler Mountain, the guides incorporated poetic catchphrases while sharing facts about observable ecosystem processes, which made the experience more memorable. They used illustrative posters for visual learners and offered samples from different plant species like Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and witches' hair moss (Alectoria sarmentosa), adding texture and layers to the experience. Though no formal artwork was presented, the storytelling and emphasis on the unique designs of nature around us became a form of visual art in itself.
This leads to the idea of the “gift of beauty.” I believe incorporating art into interpretive programs inspires people to sense the beauty in their surroundings, allowing participants to foster an emotional understanding based on personal perspectives that encourages a sense of stewardship. A personal experience of mine involves my appreciation for artistic mediums such as photography and videography. These mediums have allowed me to see the beauty in and gain intellectual understanding of landscapes I have not yet had the opportunity to visit. The ability to learn about nature and associated cultures around the world through these artistic forms has fundamentally changed the way I perceive the world. Art has the power to instill a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature and the diverse ways in which humans interact with it.
Ultimately, I believe art can help bridge the gap between intellectual understanding and emotional resonance, encouraging advocacy for ecosystem conservation. The "gift of beauty" is not just in the visual appeal of nature, but in the way art helps us recognize our place within these ecosystems, fostering both curiosity and responsibility.

Electro Nostalgia Meets Modern Grit in JRTA’s Down Shiftin’ Just recently I got a chance to try listening to the newest production of JRTA, “Down Shiftin,” and I must admit it is a great work. The first thing that strikes the attention here is that JRTA is a rather versatile musician playing multiple instruments and carefully combining electro-pop and rock elements into a catchy sound. Of all the things that JRTA insisted on, authenticity stood out to me as the most compelling. He writes and composes from his studio that is based at the 11th floor of the building, controlling every part of the procedure. This is particularly highlighted in the music so the sense of actually ‘Touching the Light’ feels unique in a way that does not emply fashionably over-productive studio wok, which seems to pervade today’s music. But, what is really inspiring of this song is the message it brings about down shiftin’ while going for hopes and dreams in life regardless of one’s age and conditions. I think it is refreshing to listen to the works of an artist who can address such themes directly. As for the source of inspiration, JRTA uses miscellaneous elements. It is also possible to note similarities to Morphine and Portishead, as well as to the classics of rock’ n’ roll such as The Doors. Yet, watching the show, one deciphers that all these influences yield a program uniquely JRTA’s own. What speaks volumes about this release is the blend of old school elements with modern feel. It is a fine balance to strike, and while JRTA pulls it off exceptionally well, it feels like something that has been seen before but presented in new packaging. I got a perfect opportunity to talk to JRTA regarding the track and its genesis, including some of his most heartfelt musings revolving around “Down Shiftin’. ” He spoke about his struggles and the period of self-awakening as well as subsequent phases of experimentation and searching for the core purpose of his artistry. If the audience wants to listen to music which is intelligent, combines two or more genres, and has a powerful message, then ‘Down Shiftin” by JRTA is worth listening to. It is an inspiring story of never giving up on creativity and talent, and of never being too old to achieve one’s dreams. Listen to Down Shiftin https://open.spotify.com/track/0EeYUSqvpTHJZyCafgpDCB?si=0ef9b9f45c7a42ec Follow JRTA on Facebook Spotify Soundcloud Youtube Instagram Tiktok     "Down Shiftin'" has such a cool vibe—can you tell us what inspired the song’s concept and lyrics? A moment of confidence. My actual driving. Seriously though, it reflects a significant breakthrough in determination. I was having a wrestling match with myself over whether or not to release my music when someone significant to me was making a suicide plan and confided in me. It really spun me out. I had written this other song, Dreams Fade, about it, which is basically me feeling alone in the world. Then this song followed right after and it's the middle finger to all of it. It is the decision to promote my music and give life my all however much is left. How did the idea for "Down Shiftin'" come to life? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked its creation? Let's call it a wave of determination. I realized how close I was to having no one to rely on but myself and decided I would be the best person for myself to rely on that I could be. What’s the overall theme or message you hope listeners take away from this single? Finish the race. Give it everything you've got. ...and if this is your second act drop it in second gear and hit the gas. Your sound is unique—how did you approach blending different musical styles in "Down Shiftin'"? I set out to make a straight electro-pop tune but fell in love with that synth tone that sounds like power chords on a guitar and went a little Fu Manchu. What was the production process like for this single? Did you collaborate with any new producers or musicians? It was all just me in my apartment.
Are there any specific musical influences or genres that inspired the sound of "Down Shiftin'"? I do have a love of stoner rock that may creep in now and then. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5pNQoX4WQm3Ng3QbKrCR8K The title "Down Shiftin'" suggests a sense of change or transition—does this reflect anything personal in your life or career? If you downshift and let up on the gas your engine will stop you. If you downshift and lay on the gas you have a ton of power and torque. I'm punching it. How did you find the right vocal delivery and energy to match the tone of the song? I think the energy came from sincerity. The delivery from repetition. Do you have any favorite lyrics or moments from "Down Shiftin'" that you feel are especially powerful? I'm a pretty big fan of the third verse. It sums up the drive I have found for my music. What was the most challenging part of creating this single, and how did you overcome it? Probably writing the second verse. It started out pretty terrible but I love where it ended up. Revision was key. How has the fan reaction been so far? Have there been any surprising responses to the release? Ha! My biggest fans are in the dish room at the pizza joint where I work to pay for promo. Like they plug in the wall and blow air. Seriously though someone commented that they had a crush on my music. That made me feel like I was in Jr. High but, like, in a good way. Is there a music video or visual component for "Down Shiftin'"? If so, what was the concept behind it? It's in the works. Just driving. How does "Down Shiftin'" fit into your overall sound and vision as an artist? Do you see it as a new direction or a continuation of your style? That's a good question. I had set out to make one electropop track, Dreams Fade, then I made Down Shiftin then I made another one called Afterlife that has similar components. So that is three out of over 20 songs. I guess that makes it a seventh of my sound. Perhaps a major seventh? I'm leaning toward the style of my song One More Toke. The press called it cloud hop. Looking ahead, do you have any upcoming releases or collaborations you’re excited about? I think my next single will be one about a near-death experience I had on DMT. Simply called DMT NDE. I'm pretty excited about it. The song tells the story well. If you could describe "Down Shiftin'" in just three words, what would they be? Catchy, Gritty, and Determined. Someone else said Glitch Mob meets Bowie and while flattering it's just too many words.

1. Introduction to the World of Ultra Luxury Perfumes
Perfume has long been more than just a scent. It's a statement, an identity, a symbol of one's personal brand. Within this realm, ultra-luxury perfumes occupy a rarefied space. These are fragrances that are not merely bought but are invested in, reflecting the pinnacle of opulence and craftsmanship. Ultra luxury in the fragrance industry signifies more than just a high price tag; it represents exclusivity, rarity, and an intimate story woven into each bottle.
The rise of high-end perfume brands has coincided with an increasing appetite for niche luxury products. In an age where mass production often diminishes uniqueness, ultra-luxury perfumes offer a refuge. These brands cater to those who seek more than just a pleasant aroma—they cater to those who desire an olfactory experience that is rare, refined, and profoundly personal.
2. The History and Evolution of Luxury Perfumes
The origins of luxury perfumes trace back to ancient civilizations, where fragrances were used in rituals, religious ceremonies, and as status symbols among the elite. The Egyptians, for instance, utilized fragrant oils and balms in both life and death, believing scents to hold mystical properties. As trade routes expanded, so did the exchange of aromatic substances, influencing perfumery across cultures and epochs.
Milestones in luxury perfume development include the refinement of distillation techniques in the Middle Ages and the advent of alcohol-based perfumes in the Renaissance, which allowed for more complex and stable scents. The 20th century saw the birth of iconic brands and the democratization of perfumes, but the upper echelons of perfumery remained dedicated to luxury, leveraging tradition and innovation to create fragrances that stood out in a saturated market.
3. What Sets Ultra Luxury Perfumes Apart?
Ultra luxury perfumes distinguish themselves through the use of rare and exotic ingredients. These include orris root, oud, ambergris, and saffron, sourced from the most exclusive regions worldwide. The rarity of these ingredients not only elevates the fragrance but also aligns with the luxury market's focus on exclusivity.
Beyond ingredients, the mastery in craftsmanship and artisanal techniques plays a critical role. From hand-blown glass bottles to meticulously crafted packaging, every element is considered an art form. The process often involves small batches, ensuring each fragrance receives the attention to detail it deserves, resulting in a product that feels bespoke and personal.
4. The Role of Branding in Ultra Luxury Perfumes
In the ultra-luxury market, branding is as essential as the scent itself. Iconic brand stories and heritage often draw upon decades, if not centuries, of history. Brands like Guerlain, Chanel, and Creed have built their reputation not just on the quality of their fragrances but on the stories behind them. This narrative depth provides a compelling reason for consumers to invest in their products beyond just the scent.
Exclusivity is another powerful tool. Limited editions and bespoke services cater to a clientele that values rarity and individuality. The fewer the bottles available, the more desirable they become, turning each purchase into an act of acquiring a piece of art rather than just a fragrance.

5. Understanding the Consumer of Ultra Luxury Perfumes
The consumers of ultra-luxury perfumes are not just buying a scent; they are purchasing an experience, a lifestyle, and often, a status symbol. These individuals are typically well-versed in the nuances of fragrances and appreciate the artistry involved. They are discerning, willing to spend a premium for something unique that sets them apart from the mainstream.
Psychologically, the appeal of ultra-luxury perfumes lies in the desire for prestige and differentiation. Wearing a rare scent is akin to wearing a piece of jewelry; it's a conversation starter, a mark of discernment, and an emblem of one's personal brand. This desire for prestige drives the market and fuels the demand for continually evolving and exclusive offerings.
6. The Science Behind Scent: Perfume Composition
Creating a luxury perfume is a delicate art that balances science and creativity. The composition of a perfume involves three notes: top, middle, and base. The top notes are the initial scents perceived after application, often light and refreshing. The middle notes, or heart notes, emerge once the top notes fade, offering a more robust aroma that defines the perfume's character. Finally, the base notes provide depth and longevity, lingering on the skin long after the other notes have dissipated.
The chemistry behind these layers is complex. Perfumers must carefully select and balance ingredients to ensure the fragrance evolves pleasantly over time. This process requires a deep understanding of how different ingredients interact chemically, ensuring a harmonious blend that is both captivating and enduring.
7. Sustainability and Ethics in Ultra Luxury Perfumes
As with all luxury markets, there is a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethics in the ultra-luxury perfume sector. Historically, many of the rare ingredients used in perfumes have been harvested with little regard for environmental impact. However, there is a shift towards sustainable sourcing, with brands increasingly focusing on eco-friendly practices and fair trade agreements.
Balancing luxury with environmental responsibility poses a unique challenge. Consumers of ultra-luxury perfumes are becoming more conscientious, expecting brands to align with their values. Thus, the future of luxury perfumes will likely see a fusion of opulence and sustainability, where luxury does not come at the expense of the planet.
8. Marketing Strategies for Ultra Luxury Perfume Brands
Marketing strategies for ultra-luxury perfume brands are as sophisticated as the products themselves. Celebrity endorsements and influencer partnerships play a significant role, lending an aura of glamour and desirability. By associating a perfume with a well-known figure, brands can elevate their status and appeal.
Digital marketing, especially through social media, has become increasingly important. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow brands to reach a wider audience and create visually compelling narratives around their products. This digital presence enables brands to engage directly with consumers, fostering a sense of community and exclusivity.

9. Challenges Facing the Ultra Luxury Perfume Market
Despite its allure, the ultra-luxury perfume market is not without challenges. Market saturation and competition are significant concerns, as more brands attempt to enter this exclusive space. Each new entry must distinguish itself through innovation, quality, and storytelling to carve out a niche.
Economic downturns also pose a threat to the luxury sector. When consumer spending tightens, high-end products are often the first to see a decline in sales. Brands must navigate these fluctuations by maintaining their allure and finding ways to resonate with consumers who may be more cautious with their spending.
10. Future Trends in the Ultra Luxury Perfume Industry
Looking forward, the ultra-luxury perfume industry is poised for exciting innovations. Technological advancements in fragrance creation, such as the use of AI in scent design, offer new possibilities for unique and customized fragrances. This technology allows for greater precision and creativity in developing new scents.
There is also a growing demand for personalization and bespoke scents. Consumers increasingly desire fragrances that reflect their individuality, leading to a rise in custom perfume services. This trend towards personalization is expected to grow, redefining luxury as something deeply personal and unique to each individual.
The world of ultra-luxury perfumes is a fascinating blend of history, art, and innovation. As the market evolves, it will continue to push the boundaries of what defines luxury, offering consumers more than just a scent, but a truly unique olfactory experience.
There are an affiliate link of this Ebook its may make profit of me Start Your Own Ultra Luxury Perfume Brand
Conclusion
The allure of ultra-luxury perfumes extends far beyond their exquisite scents. They are a testament to history, craftsmanship, and the art of storytelling, captivating those who seek a profound sensory experience that resonates with exclusivity and personal identity. These perfumes are a celebration of the finest ingredients, meticulous craftsmanship, and innovative blending techniques, creating an olfactory journey that is as unique as it is luxurious.
As the industry continues to evolve, it must balance tradition with innovation, and luxury with sustainability. Brands that can seamlessly merge these elements will not only stand the test of time but also shape the future of the fragrance world. The demand for personalized and bespoke fragrances will grow, driven by consumers who seek individuality in their choice of scents.
Ultimately, ultra-luxury perfumes will always have a place in the world of fine fragrance, offering a timeless appeal that goes beyond mere scent—providing a unique blend of emotion, identity, and artistry that truly defines luxury.

Major Study: Digital Media Art
Exploring the process of animating the GTR 35 through a detailed journey showcasing innovative camera rail rigging techniques.
Expanded Content: Throughout the process of animating the Nissan GTR 35 in Unreal Engine using the camera rail rig, I explored a holistic approach to capture the essence and nuances of the car's power, speed, and agility beyond mere point-to-point movement. The project encapsulated an immersive journey that delved into the intricacies of vehicle animation, emphasizing the seamless fusion of technical precision and creative vision.
As I delved into the intricacies of animating such an iconic car, especially with a focus on the GTR 35's unmistakable characteristics, my aim was to transcend the realm of animation and invoke a sense of realism that mirrored a tangible driving experience. This quest for authenticity required a meticulous understanding of the car's dynamics and behavior, coupled with a comprehensive utilization of the animation tools available within Unreal Engine.
The application of the camera rail rig in Unreal Engine emerged as a guiding force in my animation process, enabling me to orchestrate a symphony of motion that exuded both dynamism and narrative depth. By sculpting the camera movements along the rail system, I was empowered to curate a visual tapestry that visually narrated the GTR 35's journey with finesse and artistry.
The intricate dance between realism and visual appeal posed a significant challenge during the animation process, prompting me to harmonize the technical accuracy of physics simulation with the subjective perception of captivating motion.
