ok i finished hugtto and i wouldnt call it the worst season ever but it was very weird...maybe i havent watched precure in a long time but something was off

most implied and/or open endings actually live rent free in my head so thats not my issue; however the time travel fuckery is something i hate with a passion for multiple reasons and i wish hugtto didnt do this to me....wouldnt say its something i genuinely hate about the season but for the lightheartedness of most episodes i definitely didnt expect this emotional warfare

i loved most characters but i dont feel as attached as i did with other cures; the amount of villains kinda did a disservice to them (especially gelos being too similar to papple and having almost 0 development THOUGH i appreciate the feminist agenda lmao)

also hate that harry kinda exists in a limbo...they didnt elaborate on cure tomorrow situation with him and i feel like that set up was kinda a big poof, probably the most out of all others

honestly the age difference between hana and george was slightly weird but its kinda understandable...i guess as a grief themes obsessed person he hit the nail on the head for me, if people want to bring up him being a creep (which he still was! and i think its kinda the point) then we kinda have to remember he literally tortured his future ex lover so i dont think he had any rationality left in him (and that is, again, the point with him)

my brain is fried from coding for 6 hours but this is as much as i can say about hugtto i guess

wasnt the best season but definitely wasnt the worst (heartcatch and fwp stay undefeated/hj)

i think what might have altered my opinions is the fact that i watched it on the *background* and only at work (as opposed to aikatsu stars) so i went from binging to big pause to binging again and i think it might explain my problems with pacing since it seems no one else thinks so

i actually do think i emjoyed it a lot eith one big exception: the theming was actually a little flat

rather than underwhelming battles, the motto of you can be anything didnt really get through fully since they abanonded hana's backstory, kinda glossed over henri's decisions and development and even saya was a little too rushed (though i appreciate her storyline)

i might be misremembering out of nostalgia but i feel like smile dealed with its themes a bit better, especially in the finale

personally i think the season would benefit from comitting to grief and connection without taking the easy roads of the second all stars movie; literally everyone in the seaosn had to grief something or someone even if not forever (for example sayas mom WAS grieving her daughters childhood which is normal and fine and would make a stronger decision of making her the monster)

also the job aspect was kinda gimmicky, as much as i love hana becoming a ceo it still could happen without those job bits, especially when family influence theme is right there and hanas mom is also right there

i still would prefer less "funny" episodes because we got no development for at least half of the cast (and maybe to justify the darker settings) but i change what i said to "this was a very solid season actually"

Embrace Your Shining Future~

Boy, I hope 10 years from now we’ll be lucky to have a future that’s even a quarter this great as Hugtto’s.

But first, it looks like George returned to his time, no longer a villain (and I guess he wasn’t a ghost, after all) but now an ordinary man again.

And while it doesn’t seem like they really applied the Walking the Earth trope here, his surroundings doesn’t suggest that humanity instantly recovered once time started again either (this all the more supports my theory that it’s a separate timeline from Hugtto’s timeline, where humanity didn’t fall to ruin).

However, maybe it’s just because of his location and they’re all somewhere else.

Whatever the case, the flowers indicate that life will start over once more and perhaps, humanity will reborn, so to speak. 

As for him, he doesn’t look as depressed as he was previously which is good because hopefully, he can work his way towards redemption by helping to nurture this newly sprung future instead of setting out to destroy it like he originally did.

Alright, back to you Hugtto, looking quite marvelous and sunny ten years later.

Shoulda known, since they came from the future, that they would still be kids (or at least around the same age as the Cures in present time) when the girls’ time finally catches up to future.

But nobody could’ve really predicted at what age exactly anyway so it’s no big deal.

Oh, and it’s nice to see that some old classmates still kept in touch long after they graduated middle school.

It’s especially funny when you don’t find it surprising that Fumito ended up working for….

…this president of what is possibly Japan’s biggest and most prosperous design company (Hana always liked to draw so not surprised about this either).

Daigan working in the same pediatric ward as Saaya doesn’t surprise me either since we’ve seen him getting along with kids very well.

And wooot~,  Saaya with short hair looks so pretty (she’s always pretty but now she’s grown-up and living her dream pretty!).

Then Homare bumped into Papple at the airport (pretty sure Homare recognized her but didn’t have time to chat since she’s in a hurry and all).

We don’t know what Papple’s doing nowadays but it looks like life is treating her well so yay~

Then there’s this.

I suppose Emiru met up with young Traum sometime ago and agreed to fund his research and development (the Aisaki family is loaded, remember, so again, NOT SURPRISED THERE) all for the purpose of seeing her best friend again…

…which resulted in the birth of Lulu, the first robot of her kind to have not only a human heart (which we’ve already seen happen) but also the capability to grow just like a normal human does.

And the reunion is just as you would expect. Tears of joy because hell yea, baby!Lulu may not recognize Emiru since she’s just been born but HELL YEA, they kept their promise to each other!

And of course, the first thing they do together is sing.

By the way, I’m declaring it canon that Traum’s first daughter is alive and she probably did contribute some way into the project to create Lulu and the reason we don’t see her here is likely because she’s at school or something.

The Traum family consists of three members and they’re all alive and well and most of all, happy together.

You can’t convince me otherwise! xP

I mean, what you’d expect from having in-laws (I dare the fool who tries to tell me Masato and Henri are not married, I DARE YOU!) who are such opera/theater fanatics that they LIVE the stage in their daily lives?

So glad the grandfather finally came around as well. Awesome.

New grandparents rushing to the hospital and they hardly look a day over the last time we saw them from 10 years ago.

*whispers* The secret must be a healthy, happy marriage.

And this is, without a doubt, Hana’s (wavy, dark-haired) husband (she is wearing her wedding band, go back and check) who’s just heard the news but still made sure to pick up a bouquet along the way to see his wife.

A bouquet of craspedias, the same flower villain!George tried to give to Hana years ago.

Except this person is obviously not the same George.

Again, it’s strongly implied the foremost reason why George spiraled into depression and started doing evil things was because he lost Hana in the future.

But since Hana doesn’t die this time, villain!George never comes into existence and therefore, George is just a normal guy who’s, hopefully, grateful that life has given him such happiness and meaning and is very much anticipating meeting his baby daughter.

Yea, they deliberately did not show his face to continue to cast doubt on who Hugtan’s father is but I’m certain it’s gotta be him.

Knowing the type of person Hana is, there’s no way she wouldn’t be concerned about the man George was before he became President Kurai when she meets (again) in present day. And she likely would’ve stuck by him to make sure he didn’t go down the same disastrous path. As a result, they got close, fell in love, married and are now having a baby together.

It’s still squicky because of the age difference so I hope they got together when Hana was at legal age (and by that, I mean by my standard of 21 years, not Japan’s 13). At least, it’ll make me feel slightly better about them being a couple that way.

Also, it looks like what people have been telling me about genetic traits possibly jumping a generation or two (thanks for further confirming this, btw!) are correct so Hugtan/Hagumi can have blonde hair even if neither of her parents do. The fact that George’s name is written in katakana instead of hiragana (which probably would translate closer to “Jouji”) suggests George himself is partially foreign so perhaps Hugtan got the blonde hair from his side (??). 

To be honest, I was aware of this fact already (really, I’m not lying here). I just didn’t believe that the staff behind Hugtto knew about it and because of that, I didn’t think they would apply it here since it’s more common to see animators make almost all girls take after their moms and almost all boys take after their dads. I especially can’t trust Toei after that whole skin color incident with Towa from Go!Pri but it seems like the writers of this season learned from their mistakes and even did some extra research this time.

Who knows?

Anyways, all evidence points to this person as George and I have nothing more to add.

Finally, they don’t tell how much further off in the future it is when Tomorrow turns up again but can I just say, it’s such a RELIEF that she doesn’t have to suffer through a despairing future like she did in the original timeline.

And that was all thanks to her mom and her friends.

Plus, when the focus turns to her at the precise moment Hagumi is born in Hana’s present time and she softly says “Mama”?

Yea...who else felt that?

I haven’t mentioned it, but I really like how the villain redemption arcs have played out for this series for the most part and find them all super adorable, event the ones i didn’t like at first. 

The message being focused on with them is also that even adults can change their lives and get new dreams, and that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start over and live the life you want, be the person you want to be, you’ve never “run out of time” and that like...is really nice to see.

Especially since they’re all people who were being exploited as office drones for like, this evil corporation, who were under a lot of pressure and miserable, but after being cast aside were able to restart their lives and run their own business?

Papple is a flashy,sexily dressed heavily made up older woman who stands in contrast to our young ingenue Precure- she was frustrated at work where she was constantly condescended to whenever she failed despite her co-workers not being any better at their jobs, but hey, at least her boss thought he was attractive and was willing to be in a relationship with her! Only then she saw he was cheating on her with a younger woman. She fell to despair, saying no one would ever want her, but the girls came in, comforted her, told her she could always start over and as long as she has a heart that loves she’ll find happiness again. (It was VERY Sailor-Mars-and-Koan, I think it might have been a deliberate homage)

So she went out and started her own talent agency! That she’s in charge of! And the other two (dude) redeemed villains are her subordinates! Including the much older dude who always snarked that if he was the one doing her job he’d do it in five minutes...then went out and got defeated in less than five minutes after she left. NOW HE’S HER ASSISTANT and she’s a good boss who didn’t treat him badly when he made a mistake.  She’s still vain and flashy and ~womanly~,she didn’t change her style and though she’s nicer, her base ridiculous, aggressive personality is still the same, but she’s good now, because it wasn’t how she dressed or her aggressiveness that was the problem, it was the low value she placed on herself and others. She’s fulfilled now, even without a romance or anything in her life.

And then there’s blonde mullet dude is now a ~Youtube Sensation~ with 25 WHOLE SUBSCRIBERS he’s so proud, and i’m proud of him too,also he’s competitive with punk Hamtaro about ‘WHO’S BETTER IKEMEN’ i mean

also yeah he refers to himself by “ore-chan” and if you don’t think that’s amazing idk what to tell you. 

And Dr. Traum ended up surprisingly endearing as Ruru’s Embarrassing Bumbling Dad (he created her) mostly because Ruru is always so done with him.

AND though Gelos’ arc wasn’t as cohesive or satisfying as the others, ya gotta love her just appearing piloting a speedboat with boyfriends in tow.

I love all these goobers, basically, and I appreciate Precure saying people never stop growing, and that it’s fine to change your mind and your dreams no matter how old you are.

Another thing I really love about Hugtto is how they handled the redeemed villains. The fact they’ve all stuck around as part of the cast, but now have their own goals and dreams is such a nice way of showing sometimes you can do things you regret, but you can always move forward. With Kirakira, you did have Bibury and Pikario sticking around, but they kind of had to work for the patisserie and sort of nothing else because of how the world of that season worked. But Charaleet, Papple and Daigan get to do odd jobs, manage idol performances, and have long discussions with the Precure over what life is like for them now. And that’s not even getting started on the complexities of Dr. Traum.

ALSO I finally got to see the Hugtto! Finale

AHHHHHH it was so good!

The age gap betweens ome of the Criasu employees tho surprised me. I didn’t realize that Charleet, Gelos, Jinjin and Takumi were *that* much younger than Papple and Daigan.

Like, in the 11 year time skip (since I’m assuming the ‘present day’ is supposed to be 2018/2018) the first lot are tiny babs

(look how small and cute they are, babbies, precious babies)

but then we see the other two and,

they’re already grown-ass adults (at the very least the same age as the PreCure cast) so like, does that mean the first 4 were like, teens or just barely past being teens when things went to shit and they joined with Kuraisu? Cause, that’s kinda sad.

And Henri and Masato!

I s2g it looks like Henri blew the kiss at him and Masato caught it. Bless them. That was cute.

Also it’s interesting how Homare and Saaya seems to have swapped hairstyles. When they were younger Saaya had long hair and Homare had short hair, but now it’s reversed, Homare’s is long and Saaya’s is cropped short.

AND BABY LULU! A tiny cute!

And ofc they just, trolled us hella hard on WHO the father of Hana’s kid is. I mean, it’s fairly obvious but they never showed his face (also the age gap isn’t, nearly as big as I thought? someone pointed out that present day!Kurai was at the highschool, plus there’s no telling *when* they actually met anyways).

That was so good though, what a send off.

Just watched the final episode of Hugtto Pretty Cure.

The first half of the episode shows what everyone is up to after the defeat of Criasu. Dr. Traum is preparing a train that’ll take those from the future back home, so the Cures decide to make the most of this day before their friends from the future return home. After visiting a planetarium, Hana and Hugtan find a pretty pen someone dropped. Meanwhile, a frustrated Fumito wanders past the train, his negative energy causing it to transform into an Oshimaida.

The Cures transform and fight it, while a crowd cheers them on, including a certian pink haired girl with pigtails. During the fight, Hugtan drops the pen and tries to retrieve it. When the monster nearly attacks, Cure Yell goes in to defend her, when Cure Star jumps in to shield them from the attack. Cure Yell thanks Cure Star for her assistance, and the Hugtto team purify the Oshimaida. They then return the pen, which now has an image of Hugtan on it, to Hikaru, who then leaves to chase a kappa she caught a glimpse of. Oh, and George can be seen wandering around in a desert somewhere, musing on how time is moving forward again.

The girls and Harry head back to the train, where the former villains have finished packing up their things and are ready to head home. The girls have to say their good-byes, Ruru and Emiru promising to continue practicing their music. Finally, Harry takes Hugtan and gets onto the train along with Ruru. Hugtan doesn’t fully understand what is going on, but Hana tries her best to see her off with a smile. However, as the train begins to take off, the girls can’t help but tear up as they follow it as far as they can before it disappears into the future, and Hana breaks down crying once it leaves.

In the second half of the episode, we are in 2030, where we see what some of the supporting characters are up to. What appears to be younger versions of Charalit, Gelos, Takumi and Jinjin discuss what they want to do when they get older. We see that the older Hana is the president of a company, who inspires everyone with her positive outlook. Fumito comes in, asking why Hana hasn’t been taking the day off as he asked her. Hana, who is revealed to be pregnant, suddenly starts going into labor. At the hospital, we see the older Saaya now working as a doctor, where a somewhat younger Daigan is also working, preparing to help Hana with the birth. We also see an older Homare rushing to see Hana, briefly coming across a somewhat younger Papple on the way.

Meanwhile, Emiru meets with Dr. Traum, who takes her to see Ruru, who this time is in a younger body. The younger Ruru doesn’t recognize Emiru right away, but as Emiru plays her song for her, Ruru remembers the lyrics and sings along.

Saaya helps out Hana, with Homare showing up in time to show her support by letting Hana hold onto a medal she had won. We get glimpses of what the rest of the supporting characters have been up to, and Hana reflects on everything that has happened as she gives birth to a familiar-looking baby girl, which she names Hagumi.

And so, that was the finale of Hugtto Pretty Cure. It was pretty good, and I kind of had sort of a theory of Hugtan being Hana’s daughter due to their similar eye color and the fact that she continued to call her mama even after learning to say the names of the other four Cures, which this episode confirms. The reason I never mentioned this theory was because I couldn’t really figure out how it’d fit into the timeline, and I’m still a bit confused in regards to that, but I’ll get back to that in a little bit.

The good-bye between the characters from the present and the future was sad, even if we know they’ll eventually meet again. Especially with Hugtan not understanding why they were leaving Hana and the others behind. It was also nice to see everyone sort of just going about their every day lives now that the threat has been averted.

And of course, it was nice to see what the older versions of the supporting cast was up to in the future. Junna and Aki apparently formed a comedy duo, Henri has gotten back into ice skating as far as I can tell, and Masato and Emiru’s grandfather managed to finally become more open-minded at some point in the years between the present and future. Ruru was pretty adorable too in her younger build. And I guess Hana and George still ended up becoming friends in this timeline too.

All right, so... is the future Harry and the others came from even further into the future than 2030, considering what appears to be Charalit, Gelos, Takumi and Jinjin are still kids in this future? And as for Hugtan/Cure Tomorrow being Hana’s daughter... Okay, so according to supplementary materials, the future George initially came from was one where Hana presumably never transferred schools and met the others, thus never found the inner strength the Hana we know found, which eventually led to her death. So... Does that mean Cure Tomorrow came from the good timeline!future all along, and ended up in the bad timeline!future, before going back in time with Harry to create a Stable Time Loop of some sort...?

Well, it was certainly nice to see everyone get their happy ending. Cure Star did make a cameo, much like the previous two series had the pink Cure of the next do, although her cameo felt a bit short compared to Ichika’s in Mahou Tsukai Pretty Cure and Hana’s in Kira Kira Pretty Cure A La Mode. I guess there was a lot they had to put into this last episode.

But hey, we’ll be seeing more of her pretty soon. I’m certainly looking forward to Star Twinkle Pretty Cure!

Birthday Kisses

((Psst. For you, Hana, and to the Hana x Saaya fans. Once more, Happy Birthday!))

Saaya was in the dilemma of her life.

She arrived at the Nono residence with Homare. The blonde was as cool as usual, but she had a satchel bag with her slung over her shoulder.

The Nono family, minus Hana, welcomed the girls. Ruru and Emiru were already there as well. Emiru was teaching Ruru how to wrap something up.

The front door has been ringing non stop. Familiar faces, friends and classmates were coming into the house. Papple and her sidekicks, Anri and Masato, even Hinase. He didn't stay long. He left with a friend to look for Cure Yell.

When Hana finally arrived, it was already late afternoon. She came home with Harry and Hugtan, who kept with the plan to keep her busy. The moment she turned on the lights, everyone yelled 'Happy Birthday'. Hana was both surprised and happy, crying in joy as everyone rushed to hug her.

Except for Saaya herself.

Everything went well that night. Hana went up a year. Everyone greeted her with hugs and gifts. Homare gave Hana the satchel bag, saying she did not have enough time to gift wrap it. Inside was a jewelry box that has pretty earrings inside it. Emiru and Ruru were next. Emiru got Hana a green kaiju monster costume, so they would match. Ruru got Hana got a cookbook of the food she thought were delectable. Ruru hasn't gotten the grasp of gift giving yet.

The night continued like that, with eating food and karaoke. The five girls were dared to sing an old song from the 90's, about getting along with her friends before becoming her lover. It was weird.

As the night went by, everyone soon left. Saaya was waving everyone goodbye with Hana until she was the last girl left needing to go.

"Saaaaaaya! Where's my present?"

Saaya froze on the spot as Hana approached her from behind. Saaya just stepped out of the front door and into the porch, so she and Hana were all alone.

"I'm sorry, Hana..." Saaya turned to face her, twiddling her fingers. "I've been busy with work, I couldn't find the time to buy you one..."

Hana looked disappointed. "You got nothing for me at all?"

Saaya shook her head. "No... but maybe tomorrow, I could get you one! You need to be a bit patient-"

"Nope. I want one now." Hana grinned and took a step closer to Saaya. So close, Hana and Saaya could see their reflection in each others eyes.

Saaya blushed. Her heart raced. She clutched the hem of her skirt as she faced Hana. She had one thing in mind. But she wasn't sure if Hana would like it.

"Close your eyes?" Saaya asked. Hana stood in front of her, the moonlight casting a beautiful glow on her. Her cheeks were flushed as well as Saaya's. Hana closed her eyes, smiling patiently. Saaya stepped up to Hana, and leant forward to give her a gentle kiss on her cheek. Hana's smile grew, but she kept her eyes closed, giggling.

"Saaaaayaaaaa-! Can I get one for every year for my birthday?" Hana asked, rocking back and forth on her heels. "I got one now, so that means 13 to go!"

"E-eh?! You want that many?" Saaya asked, flabbergasted. Hana gave a small laugh.

"When I moved here, you were the first person I made friends with." Hana spoke, eyes still closed. "I had a hard time in my previous school, you know... but you made this year the best for me. You and everyone else. Homare. Ruru. Emiru. Thank you." Hana sighed, lifting her head up. "I've grown to love myself more, but also the people I grew comfortable with. Saaya, you made me feel comfortable the most."

Saaya placed her hands over her mouth. She stopped herself from sobbing, but tears dripped down from her eyes.

"Would you stay by me for another year? And the year after? And the year after that?" Hana giggled, finally opening her eyes. "Well... I guess I'm asking too much for a birthday present-"

"Yes."

Saaya threw herself on Hana, kissing her cheek again and again. Hana laughed, and tears of joy also flowed from her eyes. Hana accepted the kisses happily, laughing and squealing, until the number passed her years. "Saaaaya! That's too much already!" Hana cried out, beaming from ear to ear.

Saaya shook her head. She smiled back. "Not enough for you. Happy Birthday, Hana!"
