One Life Over Millions (Miguel O'Hara x F! Biomedical Engineer Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You are a Biomedical Engineer working for Alchemax. You also have a little hobby of coming up with Theories and research on who Spider-Man 2099 is under that mask. You don't share anyone of this hobby besides Miguel, your co-worker. Little did you know, you're sharing your theories with Spider-Mans other identity, Miguel O'Hara.. After finding out that millions are at risk from one simple vial, you'll be able to get a closer look at Spider-Man as you work besides him.
Disclaimer: I do not own Marvel or any of its characters. This is a 4-part series.
Word Count: 2.2k

Pt.1 Pt.2
┍━━━━━⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ━━━━━━┑
Alchemax was bustling as ever in the mornings, people starting their morning shifts while others walked out finishing their night shift. You walked into your office starting your daily morning as a Biomedical Engineer. Looking over to the unfinished medical equipment you were building suddenly made you groan knowing it was going to be a busy day today. Walking to your desk setting up everything including music as you worked alone in your office. Usually, people in Alchemax share their space with a partner but you enjoyed having the office to yourself. You don’t have to worry about mixing your projects by accident with your officemate. You set down a modified pacemaker you were building before letting out a sigh. You have to admit, it does feel pretty lonely, but you move on, knowing there is no reason to complain if it achieves you getting paid for doing what you love.
Lunch rolled around; you placed the pacemaker down on your desk. Your eyes are having a hard time focusing on the very small components, not even the magnifying glass can help you. “At this rate, I’m never going to finish” You groan before seeing a bag of food set down on your desk. “Hola compañera*” Miguel, who was a geneticist working in Alchemax, grabs a chair and sits in front of you. You smile, another reason why you enjoyed working here. Miguel and you were always there for each other. Some days Miguel would forget to bring his coffee to stay awake, you would always order an extra one for him on your way to work. As you see, you forgot your lunch. “Thanks for the lunch” You grabbed the bag enjoying the smell of amazing food. “Something tells me you stayed up all night.” Miguel eats his empanadas he brought admiring the pacemaker you were building. “Let me guess, you drove by my house to get a late-night empanada and saw my lights on.” You chuckle knowing his nightly drives to get some type of pastry to satisfy the night. He smiles as you catch him red handed. “Maybe” He shrugs and picks up the pacemaker. “What’s the deal with this?” You took a bite of the food he brought and looked over “Pacemaker, I’m modifying a new one, a better version to help more people in need.” Smiling, Miguel puts it down carefully before grabbing your work bag and pulling out a notebook. “Okay spill it, you stayed up at night doing this research “he waves the notebook around.
The notebook was something you never shared with anyone, but you decided to tell Miguel about it and from there, he would listen to your theories. The notebook contains theories of who Spider-Man is under that mask. Spider-Man 2099 has caught your attention and wanting to challenge yourself, you’ve been collecting research to figure out his identity. Grabbing the book, you flipped some pages over to some pictures of Spider-Man’s equipment he uses during battles. “I have a new theory!” You tell Miguel who only nods, telling you to go on. You smile, you knew it was wrong to fall in love with a co-worker, but you can’t help it. He listens to you attentively on either your work issues or personal issues like your challenge of identifying Spider-man. “Based on the equipment he uses, some of the components used to build it are only here in Alchemax!” Getting up, you walked over to a box pulling out a couple of the parts. Miguel only stays stiff at your new theory.
Miguel was the one and only, Spider-Man 2099. He found it cute on the day you told him about wanting to figure out his identity. Since then, he would come during lunch to hear about any updates. He has to admit, you’re pretty smart and spot on some theories but this theory got him a little worried. Maybe he should be extra careful around now both as Miguel O’Hara and Spider-Man. He watched you set the parts on your desk “These are needed to create his amazing equipment.” You pointed out. “So, your theory is?” He asked, wanting to be sure he was thinking what you were thinking. “I think our Spider-Man is someone who works here in Alchemax. “You write down in your notebook, writing down the parts you took out. Miguel looks at you, this is getting bad. You were getting too close to finding out his identity and he needed to make sure he was a few steps ahead. “Oh, estás seguro de eso*?” He looked at your notes before thinking “Maybe, he can have someone exporting him the parts?” He didn’t want to throw you off the path, but he wanted to keep you safe. You stopped realizing that theory “Oh…maybe you are right, I didn’t think of that” You wrote it down as well in your notebook. “And here I thought, I was getting close” You sigh before putting everything away. “Well enough about that, how's your work going?” You asked him, finishing the rest of your lunch. Miguel smiles and places a hand on his cheek listening to you speak about your projects, admiring the way your eyes light up on the possibility of helping millions.
After a long shift, you were finally able to go home. Locking up your office, you placed your bag on your shoulder before walking to the elevator but groan in frustration seeing it was out of service. Walking to the stairs, you prepare yourself to climb down 5 flights of stairs. A whisper stops you, looking at the time on your phone. The night shift hasn’t started so there shouldn’t be anyone on this floor. You’re always the last one leaving the floor, so you know something isn’t right. Following the whispers, you are faced with a door, slightly open. You stayed quiet listening. “Here are the serums you asked for.” You peaked in seeing a hand holding a box of vials with some purple liquid in it. Setting the box down, one rolled close to the door. You look making sure they were busy before leaning a bit reaching for it. Your fingertips touch it before gasping as a boot step on your hand. “What do we have here?” A sinister voice chuckles. You panicked before grabbing the vial with your other hand and opened the door quickly, making it hit the man in the face as he was in range. Stumbling back, his boot was off your hand. You took this chance and ran to the stairs putting the vile into your pocket.
Miguel sighs waiting for a copy he asked at the front desk. He walks around patiently; he should’ve been home already in his bed sleeping. He looks over seeing you run out of the stairs, pushing the door open with urgency and quickly walking to the exit. “(Y/N)?” He was about to stop you and ask if everything was okay, but you were gone. He didn’t like the way you looked so panicked. He looks over, hearing the doors to the stairs slam open. He watches as a couple of Alchemax workers were out of breath and looked around, as if they were chasing someone. He quickly looks back to where you ran off. Were they chasing you? What happened? He looks at the front desk before running out to where you went, those copies can wait. He needed to know if you were okay.
Miguel knocked on the door to your house but nothing. He looks around making sure no one is watching him, and he hops over the fence going to your backyard. He looked around for any lights inside your house, but it was dark and empty. He walked to your back door and broke the handle walking in. He looked around your place, nothing was out of order. He goes upstairs quickly “(Y/N)?” Soy yo, Miguel” He calls out and goes into your room. He was ashamed of being in your room without your permission but needed clues to where you ran off. He was glad the room was nice and clean, no clothing thrown on the floor. He looked around at your desk, only seeing files of your upcoming projects. He grabs his phone calling you but only to find out your phone was turned off. “Carajo*” He whispers as he looks thinking of another place before knowing he’ll have to wait till tomorrow if you show up for work. You never skipped a day, even if you were sick. If you don’t show up tomorrow, then he knows you’re in danger.
You walked into the Alchemax building the next day, your eyes looking at each worker. You wished you were able to get a look at the people yesterday, but you couldn’t risk being seen as well. Hugging your jacket close to yourself, you checked your surroundings for anything or anyone following you. Once you were in your office, you quickly move your desk making it face your door. Your desk was turned around where your back was facing the door, but after yesterday, you had to be safe than sorry. Setting your jacket on the chair, you looked at your bruised hand. That step was pretty nasty but thankfully nothing broke. Sitting down, you pulled the vial out. You looked at it, to your discovery last night, this vial. This one single small thing was able to kill thousands of people and for them to have a full box of them worried you. Turning on your computer, you printed the results of the serum from testing them in your personal hideout aka a hotel room to prevent the chasers from finding your home. Looking at the ingredients, your face saddens more. “No…” You whisper reading the results. You look at the vial thinking to yourself, ‘how can this small thing, the size of my pinky, be able to kill millions of people.’
You slowly get up, your legs feeling weak all of sudden. You were overwhelming yourself. Taking a small step to get to your bag, you fell on your knees. “ no no no” You repeat yourself. Everything around you suddenly seem loud to your ears, the noise of the computer, the ticking of the clock, everything.  You cover your ears trying to silence the noises, tearing up. You were feeling overwhelmed, so pressured to do something about it. “Stop it please” You whisper to yourself, closing your eyes. You hear someone calling your name faintly amidst the chaos. You felt warm hands placed on top of yours. Opening your eyes, you were met with Miguel's concerned face. (Y/N)?!” He says “Está todo bien? qué está pasando?*” The noises around you seem to stop, you were now focusing on his voice, taking a deep breath. “I…I’m okay” You whisper, hiding the vial in your fist. Slowly getting up, you sat on your desk, not trusting your legs yet. Miguel quickly grabs a glass from your small countertop, pouring a glass of water.  His face expresses concern seeing you trying to calm yourself. He walked over handing you the glass “Toma*” You thanked him and took a sip of the water. Trying to figure out what the hell was that. Did you just have a panic attack or something? Miguel watches you fight whatever was going on in your mind. He kneels in front of you and frowns, seeing the bruise on your hand, “What’s wrong…You can tell me anything.” He whispers, not wanting to spook you seeing you were on edge today. Looking at Miguel, you wanted to tell him what you discovered but you think back to the events, you didn’t get to see their face. You knew what you were thinking was wrong, but it was better to be safe than sorry. It pained you to think he could be involved in this; he was a higher up in the Alchemax corp. You only gave him a smile, “it’s nothing…just had a rough morning” You lied, well it was half the truth, you did have a rough morning, but it still felt like a lie to you. He only nods, giving you space, getting up. He turns to you about to say something but out in your glass wall, he sees smoke in the distance, within the city. His duty as Spider-Man was calling him. He looks at you, “Listen, you can tell me anything, it stays between us, remember that, Solo tú y yo” He whispers before excusing himself out of the office. You look out the window seeing the smoke and then back to the vial. It was time for you to get Spider-Man's attention and the only way to get his attention was running into the danger. You quickly grabbed your bag clocking out early. Running into the city, going towards the smoke, towards the danger. It was now or never to save people’s lives even if it cost yours. One life over millions.
As you ran out, an employee watches you leave through the exits before spotting your bruised hand. He grabbed his phone walking over to the exit, watching the way you ran before dialing a number.
 “I found our little spy.”

INTERVIEW WITH A WRITEBLR — @talesofsorrowandofruin
Who You Are:
Nerissa || she/her
Aro-ace fantasy and mystery writer. Obsessed with history and languages.
What You Write:
What genres do you write in? What age ranges do you write for?
Adventure, drama, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, mystery, paranormal, psychological, sci-fi, thriller, and tragedy. Young and new adult.
What genre would you write in for the rest of your life, if you could? What about that genre appeals to you?
Fantasy. I love being able to create new worlds and languages.
What genre/s will you not write unless you HAVE to? What about that genre turns you off?
Romance. I simply have no interest in it.
Who is your target audience? Do you think anyone outside of that would get anything out of your works?
Primarily readers between 15 and 25, but I'm sure people older and younger would still be able to enjoy my works.
What kind of themes do you tend to focus on? What kinds of tropes? What about them appeals to you?
Dysfunctional families, controlling/abusive mothers and abusive teachers, complicated histories, characters pretending to be something they're not, enemies-to-lovers. They appeal to me because the first two are unfortunately things I've experienced in real life and the others provide plenty of opportunities for drama.
What themes or tropes can you not stand? What about them turn you off?
Love at first sight, giving up everything for love, love triangles, most romantic tropes actually. I can't relate to them and the characters strike me as selfish idiots.
What are you currently working on? How long have you been working on it?
I have one main WIP at the minute: The Unfortunate Moth, an Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery. I started it in January.
Why do you write? What keeps you writing?
I'd go crazy if I didn't write.
How long have you been writing? What do you think first drew you to it?
For years, since I was ten at least. I love reading, so I think that drew me to writing.
Where do you get your inspiration from? Is that how you got your inspiration for your current project? If not, where did the inspiration come from?
Other books/films/series, historical events, places I've been, and dreams/nightmares I've had. I got the inspiration for my current WIP from Murder on the Orient Express.
What work of yours are you most proud of? Why?
Currently Totentanz, because I love the black comedy in it.
Have you published anything? Do you want to?
Only online so far, but I plan to traditionally publish some day.
What part of the publishing process most appeals to you? What part least appeals to you? Why?
Most appealing: holding a physical copy of my book. Least appealing: querying, getting an agent, basically everything else.
What part of the writing process most appeals to you? What part is least appealing?
Most appealing: writing the first draft. Least appealing: editing.
Do you have a writing process? Do you have an ideal setup? Do you write in pure chaos? Talk about your process a bit.
I set a goal, either on Pacemaker dot Press or NaNoWriMo, and do my best to meet daily word count goals. I usually have a vague outline of the main events and come up with everything else along the way.
Your Thoughts on Writeblr:
How long have you been a writeblr? What inspired you to join the community?
Since 2018. I joined the community because I thought it would be helpful to interact with other writers.
Shout out some of your favorite writeblrs. How did you find them and what made you want to follow them?
Through posts reblogged by my mutuals.
What is your favorite part about writeblr?
Tag games and being able to see snippets of other writers.
What do you think writeblr could improve on? How do you think we can go about doing so?
Can't think of anything.
How do you contribute to the writeblr community? Do you think you could be doing more?
I reblog other people's WIP intros and answer tag games.
What kinds of posts do you most like to interact with?
Excerpts from other writers' WIPs.
What kind of posts do you most like to make?
Responses to tag games, GIFsets, WIP intros.
Finally, anywhere else online we may be able to find you?
Wattpad, FictionPress, AO3
Questions For Fun:
What is your favorite language, real or fictional? Why?
A tie between German, Georgian and Japanese. German because I like how it sounds, Georgian because it looks really cool (though I haven't learnt any of it yet 😅), and Japanese because so many of my favourite musicals are either originally in Japanese (Takarazuka Revue shows) or have been translated into it (Elisabeth das Musical).
Have you ever made a conlang? What was the process like? Would you ever do it again?
Yep! I'm still working on a conlang for The Power and the Glory. It's loosely inspired by Tolkien's languages with influences from Icelandic and Armenian. I also invent words in other conlangs when I need them for other WIPs, but I haven't created full languages for them. I use Conworkshop and its word lists and word generators.
What's the most "out there" thing you've done to get ideas/inspiration for writing? Would you do it again?
Probably watching an unsubtitled musical in a language I don't speak. I do this regularly, and sometimes my attempts to understand the plot give me ideas for my WIPs.

Interview with Yasmin Angoe
Not What She Seems Yasmin Angoe Thomas & Mercer August 1 st , 2024
Not What She Seems by Yasmin Angoe is a very suspenseful domestic thriller that will keep readers on their toes. The plot has the heroine, Jac Brodie, leaving home when she was twenty-two years old. She comes back after a family tragedy, where she must confront her tortured past―and a new danger in town that no one seems to understand but her. After years of self-exile, Jacinda “Jac” Brodie is back in Brook Haven, South Carolina. But the small cliffside town no longer feels like home. Jac hasn’t been there since the beloved chief of police, her dad, fell to his death―and all the whispers said she was to blame. Racked with guilt, Jac left town and had no plans to return. But when her granddad lands in the hospital, she rushes back to her family, bracing herself to confront the past. Brook Haven feels different now. Wealthy newcomer Faye Arden has transformed the notorious Moor Manor into a quaint country inn. Jac’s convinced something sinister lurks beneath Faye’s perfect exterior, yet the whole town fawns over their charismatic new benefactor. And when Jac discovers one of her granddad’s prized possessions in Faye’s office, she knows she must be right.
But as Jac continues to dig, she stumbles upon dangerous truths that hit too close to home. With not only her life but also her family’s safety on the line, Jac discovers that confronting the truth is very dangerous. This is an excellent read with fast-paced action, jaw-dropping plot twists, and flawed but likable characters.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story and is this a series? Yasmin Angoe: Currently I plan on this being a one and done stand-alone, although if my publisher wants, I can write more books. I really wanted to write a domestic thriller that is intimate and set in the same state I live in. The focus of the story is how people do not really know who others really are. I hope readers saw this as a cat and mouse type of story.
EC: Was is based on anything? YA: A modernized version of “The Spider and The Fly.” What happens when people are unmasked.
EC: What was said about the heart pacemaker, is it true?
YA: I asked my cardiologist. I am one of the few younger people that have problems. I wanted to know what would happen if, and could it happen. I thought about having the granddad with a pacemaker. It is not easy, but if the laser is continually applied to that exact spot, it could make it malfunction.
EC: What was the role of the grandfather? YA: He was the catalyst for the heroine, Jac. Until he was harmed, she did not have a purpose or something to fight for. He was a way for her to work on her own issues by focusing on what happened to him. She wanted to make up for all those years of running away and not facing her own reality.
EC: Beyond that do you think he served as her mentor? YA: Yes. He called her Junior Dick, as in detective. He taught her things. He always held her together.
EC: How would you describe Jac? YA: Jac is reckless and is all over the place. She runs from her problems and does not face them. She acts before thinking, which gets her in a lot of trouble.
EC: Is Sawyer Jac’s opposite? YA: Probably. She is Jac’s good friend. She has a good family life. She is happy and self-assured. She is not coming from a place of loss and hurt like Jac is. Sawyer is more carefree and does not have baggage.
EC: What is the relationship between Sawyer and Jac? YA: Jac trusts Sawyer completely. She is Jac’s safe place. Jac knows Sawyer is not going to judge her.
EC: Can you explain the quote about USC, which was hilarious? YA: You mean the one, “USC, the University of South Carolina, the real USC, not the one in California.” I had to do it. Remember the book is set in South Carolina. When I moved here, I now live about ten minutes from USC. Everyone is serious about supporting either USC or Clemson. If someone says USC, meaning the SO CAL one, people will hate them for life. They feel they are the real USC, because it comes first.
EC: What about the other quote, that refers to people who want to be liked and might try too hard? YA: A lot of people are like this these days. It seems they do not have their own mind. People do not have to go along to get along. This could apply to most of the characters in the book. For example, Jac’s mom tried to mold her two daughters into what she thought a Southern lady should be. Jac rebelled against this. She wants to be different, which is why she was known as the “wild Brodie girl.”
EC: How would you describe one of the characters, Faye? YA: She does not really want to go along to get along. But she does do it when she needs it to further her goals. Then she goes back to what she really wants to be after convincing others. She pushes people, does not like to leave loose ends, and fakes apologies. She has two faces: innocent, bubbly versus coy and unfriendly. The title comes into play because the story shows how most of the characters did have two faces. Faye has it to the extreme.
EC: Do you think Jac has two faces? YA: No. This is problematic for her. The town is OK with people having two faces. People like to deal with others who are complacent, nice, and do not create any worries. Jac wants to be accepted for who she is: not a girly girl. Jac can see through Faye and does not take her at face value. As the story goes on Jac realizes she is responsible, thoughtful, and perceptive.
EC: In the beginning of the book readers are unsure of Jac? YA: Yes. Jac had a lot of issues with the town and herself. The readers do not know what happened between Jac and her dad’s death. I wanted the reader to be on the ride with Jac. At first, Jac sees herself as a loser who cannot do anything right. This might make her unreliable in the beginning until her whole truth comes out.
EC: Next book? YA: It is coming out in December 2025. I am working it on currently. It will be a revenge story. It will deal with complicated families. THANK YOU!!

Dance of the Phœnix - Episode 21
Tumblr media
An we have reached the final sprint about this series! 10 episodes left, can you believe it? I was about to start on another series, but at some point... I really should finish this one first. Even though the one I was contemplating is only eight 15 minutes-ish episodes. I really need to clear my on hold list of dramas. Because it’s awfully too long. Anyways, last time, we discovered, to no surprise, that the empress is trying to get rid of the emperor and now she’s sending her minions to investigate at the academy so she could frame someone. I would suggest Feng Wu because she’s the main lead, but maybe she’ll try to help her friend from the Dark court and take away Wu Youdao. For now, those two are the most sensible choice in my opinion, but we’ll see soon enough.
As everyone is gathering from the empress’s orders, Feng Wu is tired of waiting for Jun Linyuan so she decides to go to the library. She notices Wu Youdao is still there, so she decides to pay him a visit. However, when she comes in, he’s bleeding to death, it seems he was stabbed in the heart. Yu Mingye’s doing? Or someone else? As of now, there are no indication about the culprit. She calls for help and she’s taken away by Gao Wei (the empress’s favorite minion) and his men. I think he might be dead hmm. I mean, Wu Youdao. Oh wow. I made a mistake. That was mister Ning, not Wu Youdao. So that’s the one that was looking for clues on the poison tampering with the emperor’s health. It makes sense, he was going to look through some books to investigate. Haha, I am ashamed of not making the difference, but old men all look the same to me and I am very bad with faces. They use one of the Biluo disciples to frame Feng Wu. How boring.
So Qingluan went to the library and the director was already dead. The empress orders her to look after Jun Linyuan so he won’t do anything to destroy their plans. Jun Linyuan says it’s impossible that Feng Wu could be the culprit, because she’s nowhere near strong enough to fight against the director. But again, his hands are tied. To be honest, I think it sucks to be Jun Linyuan, because he appears all powerful, but there’s nothing he can do. Like, never. Plus the empress ordered that he can’t go out. Like I said, there’s no perks being in this guy’s shoes.
As soon as Yu Mingye hears about Feng Wu’s whereabouts, he goes to save her. However, Feng Wu doesn’t want to leave even though they can’t prove her innocence. She says that it wouldn’t be good for her and that it would even drag down together with her all the ones she cares about. So she gives her hair ribbons to Yu Mingye so he would find a solution together with Jun Linyuan since the two of them teaming up together is her only chance.
Yu Mingye gets caught trying to reach Jun Linyuan at the palace. Gao Wei tries to stop him, but Jun Linyuan says that he’s his friend. That face he made when he heard that was pretty priceless. I actually do hope that they really become friends, like a pacemaker friendship maybe. I mean if Yu Mingye wasn’t from the Dark Night Court, they probably would have been. There’s still the rivalry for Feng Wu’s heart, for sure, but still. I like the two of them as friends rather than as sworn enemies. Gao Wei still tries to interfere and drag Yu Mingye away, but the emperor just coincidentally and conveniently wakes up at that moment and he is actually rather pleased that his son made a new friend aside from Xuan Yi and Feng Xun, even though it’s from the Dark Night Court. He lets Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye go, since he’s all good now, no need to worry. Gao Wei wants to oppose to that decision, but discretely, Zuo Qingluan shakes her head to tell him not to. They have a plan. I mean, our mal leads have a plan, but we have no details yet about it.
Ohhhh! So mister Ning is alright? It is announced to the officials that were all locked up in a room together. This news seems to anger one of the person inside, no idea who that could be as they only show a close shot of their fist squeezing in anger (combined with the marvelous sound of squeaking leather, very natural. In case your fist ever produces such a sound while tightening it, I suggest consulting with your doctor because that is anything bu normal). Seeing the size of that hand though, I would guess it is a man, women are portrayed with really tiny hands and delicate features in general. The physician says that mister Ning needs to rest for three days before he can wake up and get better. As soon as he’s left alone, a dark figure comes by. But when they stab the bed, they discover there are only pillows under the blankets. So... Is director Ning alright or not??????? It appears this was Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye’s plan to catch the culprit. That person is extremely strong, too powerful an adversary for Jun Linyuan and Yu Mingye combined. They seem to know techniques of both the Biluo Palace and the Dark Night Court. They manage to discover who it is by pulling his hood, uncovering Wu Youdao. He asks to see Feng Wu and retreats to the library, taking Gao Wei as an hostage with him. Once Feng Wu is brought over, Wu Youdao accepts that Jun Linyuan accompanies her, but won’t allow Yu Mingye to come in. As they enter, they stumble upon Wu Youdao looking at a painting of a lady with white hair, who happened to be the only female master of the Junwu Academy and also Jun Linyuan’s previous teacher.
So, Wu Youdao really is the killer of Ning. The lady in the painting died at the Academy in a fire incident and they never found out her corpse. Wu Youdao was supposed to be nominated as principal of this school, but headmaster Ning took it away from him, arguing that only he could give the lady in the painting the position she deserves, since he has better birth qualifications. So Wu Youdao left the academy to travel and that’s how he got his hands on a scroll from Mu Jiuzhou. Jun Linyuan accuses him of poisoning the emperor to accomplish his revenge, but Feng Wu says it’s not him, he wouldn’t do something like that. Jun Linyuan tries to convince him to surrender, but he won’t. He tells Jun Lingyuan that Feng Wu is Mu Jiuzhou’s disciple. Since they are both disciples of peope he respects, Wu Youdao won’t hurt them. But as it is Yunniang’s (lady in the painting) death anniversary, he says it’s time for everything to be over. He throws them inside a pit with a spell preventing them from using their spiritual energy and so they stay in there until everything’s over. Hopefully, somebody will find them. He wants to destroy the academy. Epic battle between old Fang and Wu Youdao.
Funny how the secret room looks exactly the same as the one with the jade vase, but instead of precious artefacts, it’s filled with books and parchments. Jun Linyuan asks Feng Wu if she’s really Mu Jiuzhou’s disciple and if she’s trying to awaken him. He noticed that the world’s balance is getting troubled, like there’s some sort of barrier put on by him that seems to be cracking. He promises to help her in her task and doesn’t blame her for not saying anything previously about it. Feng Wu notices a painting of her master on the wall, which happens to be a door that opens in reaction to her ring.
And that’s it for today’s episode! The whole story about Wu Youdao seems very useless to me and quite unjustified. Shouldn’t we focus on the evil queen instead? Anyways... I don’t really fully understand why he wants revenge so much, I might have not understood that part of the backstory due to my laziness or my not as good as before Chinese skills. I feel we’re wasting for what’s important when there are only a few episodes left and I fear the ending might be rushed, as they are way too often in Chinese dramas...

Deciding The Technological Level of Your Setting
When writing a story, it is important to determine what level of technology your characters have access to.  That determines what tools or solutions a character may have to solve a problem.  It will also influence their hobbies.  Before going too far, consider what technology actually is.  It’s not all about electric gadgets.
What is Technology?
Technology is knowledge used to solve problems or create useful tools.  Phones and computers come immediately to mind, but there are others.  Roman aqueducts are an example of ancient technology helping to solve a problem.  Knives are another basic example.  Medical care is a very important technology.
Basic Factors When Deciding Technological Level
If your story is a fanfiction for another work, research what items wouldn’t look out of place in the setting.  Take a look to see what the characters use in the work when completing tasks or performing hobbies.  If the work takes place in a certain real year or time period, look up that period’s available items such as radios or printing presses, and head off from there.
Sometimes, the development level isn’t the same for all areas in a work or for all types of technology.  This is okay.  There are many reasons why this may happen.  Some areas are more studied than others.  Rural areas take longer than cities to adopt now inventions.
The Legend of Korra is set in an analogue of the 1920′s.  Characters drive cars, ride trains, listen to the sport of pro-bending on the radio, and have sepia/black and white photos.  But when Korra and her companions visit the Earth Kingdom in season three, it is heavily undeveloped compared to the other settings.  It is hinted the Earth Queen’s corruption stimmed its growth.
In Naruto and its sequel series Boruto, they do not have cars, tanks, modern firearms, or many modern style shoes.  But, the setting has TVs, refrigerators, wireless radios, batteries, satellites, color photographs, and eventually phones and laptops.  They explore the advancement of the setting in several of the Naruto light novels, especially the first one (Kakashi Hiden: Lightning in the Icy Sky).  In Kakashi Hiden, it is mentioned that the invention of an airship will cause many people to lose their jobs.
If your work is an original fiction, first decide whether it has its own timeline or is based in the real world.  If it takes place in a real world place and time period, please look up what people in that area used.  If a particular field of science or theory is more advanced in your work than in that actual time period, determine how it would influence the technology in the story, study in related fields, and the social classes interacting with each other.
Should the tale be based in its own world, you have free reign.  How advanced of a setting do you want?  Is it set in the beginning of time, in a medieval era, in your setting’s equivalent of the Victorian or Edwardian era, in modern day, in the far off future, or even at the end of the world?
Are certain types of technology more advanced than others?  Which kinds are banned or discouraged?  Are certain parts of the world more developed than others?  Are supplies of certain items limited and/or nonreplaceable? How does this affect the average person’s lifestyle? You decide.
Making Original Technology For Your Story
Sometimes, the technology shown in an existing work isn’t helpful for dealing with a certain task.  Maybe your original story needs a special tool for issues specific to the setting or an equivalent item for a modern gadget that doesn’t exist in your world. Sit down, and ask yourself a few questions.
Why is this item needed?  Does your character need a way to store cold food?  Are their culture’s medical techniques different from the norm?  Do your characters need a way to stay in contact while split up on a quest?  Need is the mother of innovation.
What does it look like?  What materials is it made of?  Is it bulky or sleek?  How large is it?  What color is it?  How is it shaped?  Is it expandable?  It is the item’s first version, or an improved model?  How well does it perform?
What situations are this item used in?  Who invented it?  Has it been made in bulk?  If so, how does it affect trade, medical care, communication, hobbies, or travel?  How common is it?  How expensive is it?
Besides the benefits, consider the item’s weaknesses.  Does it run out of its power source in a certain period of time?  Does it need a long time to recharge?  Is the item fragile?  Is it prone to malfunctions?  Is it too bulky to be hauled everywhere?  Is your setting’s equivalent of cell service patchy?  Does relying on the item for too long cause health problems for people using it?
Technology and Magic
If the story is one where magic also exists, consider how the two interact.  It may depend on the individual setting.  Remember that magic can be considered a scientific field.  If in a world where magical and non-magicals live separately, magic users may use their power to invent versions of modern tech.
Oftentimes, magic is presented as incompatible with modern technology, or at least electronic devices.  In the book series The Dresden Files, the main character Harry Dresden is shown to short out any inventions past the 1950s.  He actually has to leave modern hospitals as soon as he’s mobile after injuries, in fear of his magic shorting out another patient’s life support.  This issue also forces him to drive an old-school car, use an ice box to store cold food, and go without a lot of modern conveniences like heated water or air conditioning.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it’s stated that technology fails around large amounts of magic or largely magical areas.  However, the limits are not clearly established.  Harry Potter uses a watch until it’s destroyed in the Triwizard Tournament’s second task in the Black Lake.  He continues wearing it out of habit afterwards.  Those usually require batteries.
Certain technology can run off magic instead of electricity, such as the Weasleys’ car or Colin Creevey’s camera.  Diagon Alley is in the middle of London, yet there’s no fuss about random blackouts in the area or the local security cameras shorting out.
In other situations, magic may coexist alongside regular technology.  They can even enhance one another.  In Sailor Moon, the Sailor Guardians protected the Moon Kingdom before its destruction, and gain magical abilities while transformed.  Yet, the Moon Kingdom and later Crystal Tokyo are depicted as  high-technology societies; the Moon Kingdom had an artificial climate dome around it, and an advanced computer.
Consider what approach you want, and the consequences there of.  Settings where magic is supposed to be hidden have the risk of ‘outing’ magicals to non-magicals if electronics like phones or crosswalks fizzle out whenever they’re in public.  Modifying items with magic may be a special scientific field.  Imagine a person with a pacemaker or insulin pump wandering into a highly magical area, only for their medical device to fail on them.  Even a few bigoted magical folks would hate that they’re unintentionally causing harm.
Technology and Magic Subsection: Harry Potter
As Harry Potter fanfictions are very common, it’s important to address the series and its approach to magic and technology interacting.  As mentioned above, technology blacks out around high amounts of magic or highly magical communities, but limits on what is affected and what isn’t weren’t clearly established.  Battery-run items like Harry’s watch seem to work fine, but phones and bugging devices do not.
In post-Deathly Hallows works, think of how jarring it may be for muggleborns or muggle-raised wizards to go from being able to text friends in a moment to having to mail letters to family members by owl.  New Hogwarts students despairing over not having Facebook anymore makes for a good joke, but consider practical problems.
Say a girl with cerebral palsy has magic.  She uses an electric wheelchair because her limbs don’t work well.  She receives a letter from a wizarding school.  Let’s hope the girl’s parents and the school’s representative talk it over and find a solution to her dilemma before she sets foot in Diagon Alley.  She will otherwise be unable to move under her own power in a magical environment.
Wizards are portrayed as ignorant to modern trends.  Arthur Weasley goes crazy over various gadgets.  He even wonders what people use rubber ducks for.  It’s implied that Harry Potter misidentified his cousin Dudley Dursley’s broken video game console as a Playstation One in 1994 when writing to Sirius Black.  The Playstation One was not released in Europe until September 1995.  Multiple wizards are shown fascinated with the Dursleys’ microwave when they visit at different times.  It is stated that pureblooded wizards resist adopting muggle tech unless there is no choice.
That is not to say wizards are a technological blackhole.  Many items like radios, cars, and others can be enchanted to work off magic.  A lot of wizards enchant or create their own magical items.  Sirius Black and James Potter used a set of two-way mirrors during their school days, with the device acting similar to a cell phone.  They and their friends Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew eventually created the Maruaders’ Map, which showed nearly everyone on Hogwarts’ grounds and most of the castle.  The Weasley twins come up with Skiving Snackboxes so students buying them can skip class without too much trouble.
Maybe Professor McGonagall goes soul-searching after the final battle, and tries finding ways to make the school more non-magical friendly.  She would have ample reason to do so; she would not want the Carrows’ days of cruelty to return in any form.  She may modify the wizarding wireless radios to cast local muggle stations or keep an enchanted phone in her office so non-magical families of her students can contact her in emergencies.
Keep in mind that a wizard OC can’t sneak their modern video games into Hogwarts or Beauxbatons, but watches, certain cameras, radios, and handheld games with non-rechargable batteries could make it in.  Non-electric devices like notebooks, pencils, pens, paints, or board games have no restrictions.
How Technology Affects Living Conditions
How advanced society is affects how housing and chores are handled.  Many modern perks like clean water, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and fast travel are taken for granted.  If the characters in your setting lack certain conveniences, think of how they will tackle different problems that usually require them.
For instance, a lot of people use electric washers and dryers to take care of their clothes.  Getting them cleaned, dried, and sorted is easy.  But, what if your world doesn’t have these items?  Do the local people scrub them by hand in a river or on a board?  How are stains dealt with?  Are herbs mixed with the clothes to freshen their scent?  Are they dried on a clothesline?  If it’s raining or snowing, what is done instead?
Think along similar lines for various issues.  Water might be boiled for safety, or mixed with alcohol.  Shades will be pulled if too hot.  A lot of food may be canned, cured, or otherwise stored in a root cellar when fresh cannot be bought.  Preparations for any trips may take a long while.  People will sleep under mountains of blankets to retain heat.
Conversely, works set in the future may find all of this child’s play.  Think of how a lot of appliances can be activated now with a smartphone application.  Do robots grocery shop on the characters’ behalf?  Are clothes dried and sorted in one machine in a few minutes?  Can a room’s windows be programmed to show a certain background, like in the Hunger Games film?  Are fingerprint scanners used so characters may access restricted areas?
Think long and hard how the technology of your world will influence daily life.
In Conclusion
Technology is a powerful force.  Sometimes characters may solve problems too easily with it, but all time periods have some level of it.  It’s important to know what the limits of inventions in your setting are.  Otherwise, someone may complain ‘how did they end up with this issue when so-and-so gadget could have solved the problem?’, or ‘why is the ninja watching television?’.
Have a nice day.

Upcoming Miguel O'Hara x F! Reader
Tumblr media
Here is a little sneak peak of something I am working on at the moment. I hope you enjoy! I am still working on Part 2 of Location: Unkown. Thank you all for the support!
Here is a little context: You are a Biomedical Engineer working for Alchemax. You also have a little hobby of coming up with Theories and research on who Spider-Man 2099 is under that mask. You don't share anyone of this hobby besides Miguel, your co-worker. Little did you know, you're sharing your theories with Spider-Mans other identity, Miguel O'Hara.
You set down a modified pacemaker you were building before sighing.
“At this rate, I’m never going to finish” You sigh before seeing a bag of food set down on your desk. “Hola compañera*” Miguel, who was a geneticist working in Alchemax, grabs a chair and sits in front of you. You smile, another reason why you enjoyed working here. Miguel and you were always there for each other. Some days Miguel would forget his coffee to stay awake, you would always order an extra one for him on your way to work. As you see, you forgot your lunch. “Thanks for the lunch” You grabbed the bag enjoying the smell. “What’s the deal with this?” You took a bite of the food he brought you looking over “Pacemaker, I’m modifying a new one, a better version to help more people in need.” Smiling, Miguel puts it down carefully before grabbing your work bag and pulling out a notebook. “Okay spill it, you stayed up at night doing this research “he waves the notebook around.
The notebook was something you never shared with anyone, but you decided to tell Miguel about it and from there, he would listen to your theories. The notebook contains theories and evidence of who Spider-Man is under that mask. Spider-Man 2099 has caught your attention and wanting to challenge yourself , you’ve been collecting research to figure out his identity. Grabbing the book, you flipped some pages to some pictures of Spider-Man’s equipment he uses during battle. “I have a new theory!” You tell Miguel who only nods, telling you to go on. You smile, you knew it was wrong to fall in love with him, but you can’t help it.
Author Notes: That's all I'm going to spoil now! This might be a longer series maybe a 4 to 5 part long, but we'll see. If you'll like to be tagged when the 1st part comes out, please let me know. Thank you so much. Stay hydrated and keep on simping! PSSTT...it's out now. Part 1

Quizzes End Up In Kisses ~ Peter Parker💕
Part-7 of the Eight Days Of Valentine series
Part 8
Warnings: fluff, thank you.
Sorry for I'm late. Also, I don't know anything about schooling system in the U.S. so forgive me.
Tumblr media
Middle school was exhausting, not to mention stupid, and you dreaded going to High school. Going everyday to a place for nearly your whole life, a prison called school, was never on your checklist. It was a pretty basic list and all the things you would want to do one day were mentioned in it.
And Peter Parker had managed to get on the top.
Entering Liz's house, you were met with loud noise and kids scattered all around the living area. The snacks and drinks were placed neatly on the kitchen slab. You sighed before moving in and placing your small gift in the pile that was placed near the christmas tree. You were invited to the party by Liz and you had nothing better to do on a Christmas eve and maybe you would find Peter here too. MJ was in the extreme corner of the room which was illuminated by a bright lamp under which she read a book. You smiled at her and her book choice, 'Great Leadership by Kimberly Davis.'
You moved towards the kitchen where you spotted Liz greeting her friends. The party went on, you stuck to MJ in the back until she needed to get back home and you didn't.
Few people were still left, probably close friends of Liz, when you spotted Ned and Peter near the window, whispering something to each other. You moved towards them setting aside the glass of juice.
"Hey Peter, Ned!" You greeted cheerfully. Ned waved, greeting you back while Peter straightened a bit, the soft light hid the mild blush covering his cheeks. It wasn't hard for you, or anyone for that matter, to figure out that he liked you. He wasn't good with secrets.
"Hey, (y/n)." He replied when Ned cleared his throat . You didn't want to seem desperate by asking him out or truth be told, you were shy yourself and didn't want to convert your friendship into awkwardness.
The room was starting to clear and you were now having a proper conversation with both the boys, majorly about school and homework when a loud voice pulled you out of the on-going topic.
"Hey losers!" Flash yelled, indicating the three of you."You need to come here." He called out, you rolled your eyes but nonetheless moved to where everyone left was gathered in a small circle. You sat beside Liz as everyone settled down and Liz started talking, "So, I have a game for everyone." She grinned and then you zoned out, staring at the boy in front of you. Brown eyes squinted slightly in concentration as he tried so hard to steal a glance at you whereas you were, absentmindedly, full on gaping at him. Only, you, Liz, Betty, Flash, Ned and Peter were left in the room.
"(Y/n), you wanna put something in?" Liz asked, popping your Peter bubble.
"What?" You asked, not having listened to a word she said.
"You wanna put something in the bag?" She pointed to the small bag placed in the centre. Where would it even come from, "And since you're the last one, you get to have the first chance." She grinned. By now, it wasn't really hard to guess that the group was playing seven minutes in heaven.
You grabbed the bag and got up, throwing your bracelet in when no one was watching and shaking the bag. You fished the bag and pulled out a small keyring which was way too familiar. A blush covered your cheeks as you realised whose it was. A small Darth Vader keyring that you gave Peter on his birthday. You looked to Peter who looked like a reindeer caught in headlights. You heard Flash laugh, "Do you think these guys are going to hold hands?"
Soon you were pushed into a room, Peter just behind you as Liz locked the door.
You sat on Liz's bed and Peter stood against the wall across you, the tension was undeniable. A few minutes were passed in silence before Peter cleared his throat and sat beside you on the bed. You watched him in anticipation as he ran his fingers through his hair, "(Y/n), you know, we don't have to do anything just because Flash would probably never leave this."
You felt a bit disappointed but you couldn't let Flash tease Peter for this, "Yeah, I know how to shut Flash up." You smiled.
You told Flash that you had made out with Peter and the look on his face was precious. Maybe it would be the other way around and instead of Flash teasing Peter, you would tease Flash for Peter had his first kiss before him. No one has to know that he didn't.
.•°☆°•..•°☆°•..•°☆°•.
It's been almost a year since then and everybody but you had forgotten that night. And you could never.
You saw Peter leaning against your locker as you made your way through the sea of teenagers.
"Hey!" You greeted your best friend, "Where's Ned?"
"Maths." He answered, shrugging. You smiled at him as you pulled out your Chemistry textbook.
"I'm already bored seeing this textbook." You complained walking beside Peter as you began your trip to the classroom.
"I know, Mr. Smith can be tough on us kids at times." He laughed, watching as you rolled your eyes at no one. "By the way, you prepared for the test?"
"Nope." You replied as soon as the question left his mouth, popping the p in the word.
"Well, you need to. This test makes up 33 percent of our total grades this semester." You sighed at this, nodding your head in understanding as you reached the class.
.•°☆°•..•°☆°•..•°☆°•.
You were at your desk for the past one hour, staring at your Chemistry textbook. Oh how you hated the subject. You were dozing off when you heard a series of knocks on your window. Although knowing it was the one and only, you were shocked and awakened from your sleep.
You ran to the window, unlocking it and letting your masked friend inside before locking it and pulling the curtains. Peter was always careless, not at all good at hiding his identity considering that you figured out, but you saved his ass.
"I'm so jealous of you." You complained and his eyebrows furrowed.
"Why?" He asked.
"You know, you get to do all cool superhero stuff and you're still gonna face that test tomorrow!" You exclaimed, burying your face in his chest and taking in his warmth as he wrapped his arms while laughing, "My mom is gonna kill me." You sighed.
"Okay, let's practice together then." He stated, moving towards your study.
"Aren't you tired?" You asked.
"Not for you, I'm not." He replied shyly and turned away from you to hide his own blush as a faint pink covered your cheeks.
Studying with Peter was rather distracting, not that you haven't done it before, but with time it seemed to have become difficult to focus on the subject and you were more interested in the pout that formed on his lips when he didn't understand something, or the way he squinted his eyes to focus, or the way his fingers played with the pencil when he was thinking something, or the way his eyebrows creased when he got an answer wrong. You were so busy admiring him.
"Okay, I got a good question for you." Peter said, pulling you out of your own little world.
"Shoot."
"And element X is divalent -" He started but you groaned, cutting him off.
"Oh, I hate X and Y questions!" You whined.
"Come on, you don't even know the question yet." Peter replied, "You need to practice if you want to get good grades on that test."
"Okay, I'll study. But, I have one condition." You said, smirking and Peter gulped. He knew that smirk. Something bad was going inside your mind whenever you did this. Before he could ask anything, though, you said, "If I answer ten of your questions correctly then you have to kiss me." You said. Your heartbeat was incredibly fast but your face showed the same smirk as Peter's cheek turned a crimson shade.
"Okay." He said, "I got some questions for you." He smirked, choosing the set of questions that he knew you would be able to answer easily.
"First question." He started, smiling at your nervousness as you tapped your fingers gently against the table. You wanted this as much as he did, "The number of moles of solute present in one kilogram of a solvent is called as…" He trailed off waiting for an answer.
You smiled, "That's easy. It's molality." You answered sweetly, batting your eyelashes at him.
"Correct. Don't get too excited (y/l/n), it's just the first question." He replied, mocking your tone which made you giggle.
"Your impressions are hilarious Parker." You teased, laughing as he smiled proudly.
"Wait till you hear my Thor impression." He beamed, "Anyway, the next question, The metal used to separate copper from a copper sulphate solution is?" He asked.
"Ferrous." You replied.
You didn't expect the questions to get harder but what do you expect from Peter Nerd Parker. You were on the ninth question and you were getting more and more nervous, "What is the chemical name for baking soda?"
"It's, Sodium something… Sodium Carbonate?"
"No. It's-"
"Sodium Bicarbonate!" You yelled, making him laugh at your eagerness.
"Oh, shut it Parker!" You scolded, nonetheless smiling.
"Okay, so are you ready for the last question?" He asked and you just nodded. This was a perfect and probably the only chance you'd get to kiss the boy you'd had a crush on for the longest time. "Now, (y/n). Which radioactive element is used in heat pacemakers?" He asked.
Shit!
Elements were your weakest part. You stared straight into his eyes, pleading for a hint as you rack your brain for the answer. At this moment, both of you knew that Peter would kiss you no matter what, but you wanted to get it right.
"Plutonium?" You mumbled a question. Peter, having heightened senses, heard that and stood up from his seat, making you stand up and follow him to the centre of the room. He sighed, facing you with furrowed eyebrows, "Was it wrong?"
He just stood there for a moment before suddenly pulling you flush against him. Your hands instantly wrapped around his neck and a yelp escaped your throat before you felt his lips over yours. Moving at a slow pace. It was sweet, it was all you needed. Your hands tugged at the curls behind his head and he pulled you closer, resting his forehead on yours, "Correct."
You smiled so wide, your cheeks started to hurt. Suddenly you couldn't help what you said out aloud, "Kissing you was on my checklist since Middle school." He laughed at this.
"The infamous checklist?" He asked. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"You knew about it?" You asked back for his answer.
"You're not good with secrets either. I heard you and MJ talking about it." He replied sheepishly.
"And you didn't tell me?" You asked, smiling.
"It was an accident." He said in a small voice, parting from you slightly and you shook your head softly as your gaze fell on the wall clock.
"It's nothing." You smiled, "Hey, I think you should go. It's getting late." He nodded, giving you a final peck on the lips as he grabbed his mask, moving towards your window.
"Peter." You called out. He turned back to face you, waiting for you to say something, "Don't forget about the Spanish quiz day after tomorrow." You smirked and he knew that smirk.

So here’s today’s thrifting haul...
Jolly Cola label from Denmark, and on the other side is a ‘Dolly’ cartoon I need to translate.
White-out tape correction tool. Which is something I normally banish from around my typewriters but it’s ribbon that goes over mistakes so won’t mess up the hammers and innards.
My third 1970s View-Master. Why would I resist? Great condition.
Right-angle cord, USB-A to USB Micro. I have adaptors to make the Micro into USB-C and thus use it with my phone.
Narwhal fridge magnet.
A stack of View-Master reels and packaging: Winnie The Pooh & The Honey Tree (reel 3 of 3, clay not cartoons), Pippi Longstocking (book and reel 1 of 3, live photographs from the 1969 TV series), Casper The Friendly Ghost in ‘The Witch’s Broom’ (reel 1, cartoons), The Six Million Dollar Man (reel 2 of 3 and envelope, photos from a TV episode), Disney’s Main Street USA (empty envelope), Disney’s Tomorrowland (the stiff paper wrap for an envelope!), Disney’s Adventureland (all three reels, red-print Sawyer order sheet), and a green-print Sawyer order sheet.
A slide carousel that is nearly full of slides. I managed to pull this out of a bin 10 seconds before a crewmember came to take the bin to the backroom.
Old stapler: Markwell SX Pacemaker.
1gb SODIM memory board. Makes a great keychain or 2005 notebook computer upgrade.
A card with an easel kickstand on the back which was likely from a pharmacy and was never folded out even though there’s wear on the edges, age uncertain; produced by E.R. Squibb (founded 1858, merged with Bristol-Myers in 1989) as an advertising prop. The gilded tale is about a wise man named Hakeem that is asked by a man how to get the most value out of things, and Hakeem tells him to look for things made with the Priceless Ingredient. What might that be? Integrity.
A handful of long strands of narrow-gauge florist wire, taken from a much larger bunch, because occasionally I do need to support or repair things.
Ghost Towns of the Pacific Frontier (49 cents) by Lambert Floren, 1971. Because I want to visit some ghost towns in my own state, though I am curious whether every place listed actually is a ghost town since a few seem to be alive.

Prince Reissue Review: Sign o’ the Times (Super Deluxe)
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Since Prince’s tragic death 4.5 years ago, we’ve been treated to two compilation albums, two posthumous demo albums, three rereleases, two live albums, and now three deluxe reissues of past albums. After listening to all 8 hours of the latest, the Super Deluxe reissue of magnum opus Sign o’ the Times, I say: Keep ‘em coming. If you listen to any reissue this year, or any of the aforementioned Prince collections, make it this one. Even without the massive, 13 LP box set, plus a DVD and 120-page book of previously unseen handwritten lyrics, the audio is enough to satisfy Prince diehards and casual fans.
Like perhaps David Bowie and Low, Sign o’ the Times is one of those situations that represented a musical genius at their artistic peak but doesn’t contain many of their radio hits, at least the ones inevitably overplayed to oblivion after the artist’s death. What it is instead is a remarkable sounding album, and Bernie Grundman’s audio remaster of it and the single mixes and edits immediately comes to notice in the clarity of the drum machine hits in the prescient title track, vocal harmonies of “Play in the Sunshine”, horns and guitar strumming of “Housequake”, and woodwinds and jazz percussion of “Slow Love.
That said, as with any great reissue, the true goodies come in the form of previously unreleased material, in this case new versions of old songs, entirely new songs, and a full live concert. The 1979 Version of “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man” is one of the most different, trading its power chords for a new wave aesthetic rife with staccato synth slabs. The 7′’ mix of “Crystal Ball” is more concise than the meandering original. Listening to the first time to the 1987 Shep Pettibone Club Mix of “Strange Relationship”, discovered by archivist Michael Howe, feels like getting a mint condition classic baseball card for cents at an antique mall. Instrumental interludes, like the two-minute piano ditty “Visions” and jazzy “It Ain’t Over ‘Til the Fat Lady Sings”, offer a nice contrast to the extended versions of singles on the preceding discs. It’s fun to hear “The Ball”, which would later be interpolated by Lovesexy’s “Eye No”, and “The Cocoa Boys” and “When The Dawn of the Morning Comes”, meant for musical The Dawn (which never came to fruition). And of course, there are a few cuts from the legendary unreleased Prince & The Revolution album Dream Factory, “Wonderful Day” and “Train”. The three most jaw-dropping unreleased tracks are songs in collaboration with or meant for other giants. “I Need a Man” was meant for at one point Vanity 6 and another Bonnie Raitt, while “Can I Play With U?” features none other than Miles Davis, who overdubbed trumpet on versions of the song with or without vocals, unreleased because neither he nor Prince were happy with the results. “Emotional Pump” was intended for Joni Mitchell, and as tender as it is, it’s hard to imagine anybody but Prince singing in front of the horns and quintessential Linn beat.
The documented live concert in Utretcht is a surefire bonus, the band strong as ever. There’s not too much in terms of novelty, save for the medley of Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” and Eric Leeds’ “Pacemaker” (the latter would later find a home on “Rockhard in a Funky Place”) introducing “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man”. And “The Cross”, played during a seemingly endless series of encores, is the powerful, emotional gut punch before a jammed out “It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night” closes the whole thing. But I can’t stop thinking about the live in studio recording of “Power Fantastic” much earlier in the album, the studio version originally released as the closing track of The B-Sides. Hearing Prince’s speaking voice, the casual studio chatter of a revered guitar and pop god, seems like something from the other side, otherworldly in its simplicity for an artist and album that’s anything but.
