as your local aspiring drag king, sometimes i get nervous thinking about how few performers are in my area, so few i can count on one hand how many i've seen over the course of my life. there are others in larger cities, but it's a hassle to travel and i just want to have fun; i'm not worried about becoming well-known or anything like that.

Because you said we could ask anything I wanted to ask about the whole meta level to the whole "rpf but not rpf" thing? I feel dense for not picking up on whatever is being commented on but I haven't been able to pinpoint anything.

Then again I'm not an RPF person at ALL but I've been following your stuff and I blew through WFU like it was nothing so there must be something special going on.

Before I get into it, this is the first time I've tried to put any of these thoughts in writing other than in rambly DMs, mostly I've thought about this out loud or talked in voice chat or a few times in person, so it may be a bit incoherent!

I'm also tagging in @gaypiratebrainrot, who I'm sure will have a quite different but intersecting take - I took what they did and ran with it in my own way. (I feel exceptionally fortunate to have had them both as an editor and as a friend who encouraged my various ramblings on this topic.)

That said, below the cut are my thoughts about the "meta level", which I think fall into two categories: constructing characters and the role of fanfiction inside of the story.

First, the whole process of constructing characters. For me, it was a very deliberate thing; with Ed and Stede, it's figuring out how to balance the canon characters and (the public perception of) the people who perform them. This, with the bonus complication of the actors having talked about how they feel about the characters in relationship to themselves, for me at least makes for a very self-aware writing experience. (And an entirely new conception of parasociality, I think it permanently changed my mental landscape!)

In WFU this is also addressed directly in the text by the characters themselves talking about AUs:

“It’s sort of like, you take the essence of the characters and their dynamic, and see how they might behave in different worlds,” Wee John says. “It’s experimental. You’ve got your coffee shop alternate universes, your sci-fi alternate universes, your actor alternate universes—” “Yeah, but, like, isn’t this the actor alternate universe,” Frenchie says, gesturing around them. “Like, Stede and Ed are kinda like alternate timeline Rhys and Taika.” “No, no,” Wee John says. “It’s all about transporting enough elements of the character for it to read like the same person, just living a different life. You couldn’t just write a story about Ed and Stede and call them Rhys and Taika.” “It’s kinda like, reinforcing the idea of some inherent self, though,” Frenchie says. “Like, as if we have some kind of soul that would be consistent across circumstances, instead of all of us being dynamic living bodies that are massively shaped by the events of our lives. Whole thing sorta reeks of cartesian dualism.”

There was a great post that I saw recently that talked about AUs and understanding what are the core aspects of characters in the canon and how to translate them into a new setting, using the term "concretes", which I immediately added to my vocabulary. So these guys, WFU Ed and WFU Stede, have this strange mix of concretes (both canon and fanon), and in writing my piece, I'm also trying to match the concretes of WFU while expanding out the universe that they exist in. (This is true to a lesser extent of other characters who have a one-to-one match canon to IRL, which hasn't yet come up in my work but does a little bit later tho it is in my other fic of WFU, a secret third thing.)

Which leads me to the construction of Mary and the unnamed wife (her interior-to-my-head name is Carlita, fwiw; I actually have a "alignment chart" of variations of her name that maybe I'll throw onto this post) - because they don't match that pattern. Which made me conscious on a different level of how I was creating these amalgams: the vanishingly small amount of information I know about either Rosie Carnahan-Darby or Rita Ora or Carly Rae Jepsen, and deliberately so! I didn't want to write RPF; I wanted to match the not quite one thing or the other of WFU, and so these two women are amalgams in a different way, with different ingredients, and they're also constructed from archetypes: the Manager Wife and the Pop Star, and the whole cultural soup around those ideas.

(I have a whole separate thought about the character of Javid Denkins but that's kind of a spoiler at this point. tl;dr: It's a very goddamn funny joke that ends up having bonus meaning.)

I am forever grateful for a specific little bit of canon that was in WFU, because it let me do something different in my work: Ed takes his coffee with seven sugars (and a little bit of godawful creamer), and so when Mary and the wife meet and have coffee, suddenly that has meaning in comparison to Ed. A canon bit of goofery can become something about diet culture, and that gets to be a whole new thematic thread through the story.

And then there's fanfiction as a story element within the fanfiction. We handle it very differently, I think, between my work and WFU, because we're looking at different aspects and from different perspectives. Among other things, it fundamentally changed my approach to learn that both Rita and Carly Rae had RPF written about them over a decade ago, when both women were in their 20s.

But in both cases, fanfiction is woven through as both contrast and mirror to the story, which is of course itself fanfiction. In both stories, Ed's fic reading habits say something about him and Mary's attitudes (about RPF in particular!) say something about her. The wife's reactions to both of these things, as well as her prior experience, shape how she interacts with them. The existence of tropes or characters say something about us, the readers and writers, as well as about the world that these stories' characters live in.

For me, both the fanfiction element and the character construction end up being partially about how much is it ever possible to know anything about another person. The obvious limits, in the case of someone who is in the public eye - I love this bit from WFU: "built [...] from a handful of Youtube interviews, my Twitter feed, and a level of horniness that would fix the climate crisis if only we could harness it for renewables", and I started joking that the wife was "three youtube videos and an architectural digest article in a trenchcoat", even though it's quite a bit more complicated than that.

But not just famous people: Mary makes assumptions about Ed and his wife based on their public personas; Ed makes assumptions about Mary based on pieces of past history through the lens of his feelings for Stede, and the wife's exploration includes piecing together information from Mary's social media and Ed's fic reading habits. All we can ever know about another person is what we observe, whether that's a public persona or their words and behavior. (There's a secret third level of how much can one ever know about oneself, but that's probably a different post.) And that circles back around to the writer and the reader: how much do we know about the canon characters? the famous people? the characters in the story?

(MASSIVE shout out to the phenomenal beta team of @gaypiratebrainrot, @veeagainsttheday, and @emi--rose for pointing out where I needed to really boost this question of who knows how much of what and when. Their incredibly smart observations did so much to help me bring out that theme among others.)

I don't know if that even answers your question, but it's some of the extra material that's been in my head as I've been writing and editing. I also had never read any RPF (with the curious exception of a notable No Reservations - Narnia crossover) before WFU and it basically melted my brain, which I have continued to process through the experience of writing for the benefit of all the broken hearts. So yeah, something different going on here for sure.

Hi anon. This is a thoughtful question. I forgot to answer it for a few days, sorry lol.

I feel like everything I ever consumed probably amalgamates into one big glob of ideas in my brain so that question is hard to answer, but for the most part I play random indies I find on itch.io... I feel like I don't watch/read enough things, and when I do it tends to be me catching up on (usually cult classic, but i will watch anything that catches my eye) anime/manga I missed way too late (see: me watching lain for the first time recently). shimeji simulation, yokohama shopping log, and alien9 are some mangas that have wormed their ways into my heart this year too. Life experiences also tie into my works a lot obviously. It's all really dependent on the specific project.

as far as actual recommendations go... I have a few.

you can't go wrong with the rpgmaker tag on itch.io. A few personal favs that are freeware include Red Trees, Paletta, Starbot, Temmie Chang's games, Astrid & the Witch, re:curse, Grimm's Hollow, the list could go on forever really. Swollen To Bursting Until I Am Disappearing on Purpose is also a great one, but might not be very "like" the stuff I make. I dunno. Anodyne, and basically anything by Analgesic Productions inspires me a lot. But that was the first game of theirs I played and it greatly inspired the game im working on now. Moon Remix RPG is another inspiration for my current game, mostly with the item system. The world feels so surprisingly alive, I like it very much.

Super Lesbian Animal RPG is one of my favorite games ever for obvious reasons. It's a bit of a different vibe from the other stuff here since it's like, actually a 20-hours-or-so rpg, but I think anyone who likes my work will probably enjoy it too. It also just looks so damn good. I want to be that good at pixel art someday.

Basically all of these are topdown 2d games, oops... I promise I play other things. But this answer is already kinda long so I guess I'll leave it there :p

I've been okay generally, I feel like I'm in a bit of a transitory period in my life where I'm trying new things and attempting to get myself to chase dreams that feel very far away. I just recently got on my Summer break from school, so I'm grateful for that! I was planning on taking another summer course, but I dropped it last second because it's technically not a requirement

I posted a random scene that I've been wanting to post on AO3 because I wrote it a while ago, it's basically an AU where Nagito is a fem musician and the whole premise is that she's popular (and so is the rest of the DR cast and some others, like just generally a fame AU cause I dig the idea so much) but it hasn't gotten many interactions since it primarily involves a rare-pair. (I've been so into Taylor Swift's music and her rise to stardom, it's been a recent fixation for me so I completely blame that on that AU/snippet of a fic.)

I have SOOOO many fanfics sitting in my documents of this rare pair, like 99% of them have fem nagito, and it mainly stemmed as an "inside joke" between my partner and I but now it's like second language to us and it's this weird thing where this version of fem nagito feels more like an OC if anything, cause the more deviations you take from canon the more creative liberty you impose on them and all that. I always feel a little bit like I'm lying when I post that content, because I love writing canon Nagito and writing him as accurately as I can muster because I'd like to think I do a good job, but then I remind myself that fanfic is entirely optional and I may as well post things that feel completely unique to me and even "out of character" because what's the harm in it? most sensible people will just click off if they don't like it.

Like, I posted this fic titled "3 years different*" on AO3 which was ANOTHER rarepair AU fem-nagito thing (Like, a different AU to the musician AU one) which, again, stemmed between my partner and I and I didn't expect anyone to read it and enjoy it but I got a pretty nice comment on the second chapter that warmed my heart and made me feel like posting was slightly worth it.

and I just love the rare-pair and I love my version of fem nagito that has shifted and grown - and while it's SO much fun to kinda have a little fandom AU between my partner and i, it gets sooo lonely being the only 2 people who are a fan of this hyper specific fandom-amalgamation we created??? like I'm only touching on it lightly here but THE LORE we made runs ridiculously deep, I've considered what a video-essay on it would look like trying to cover EVERYTHING and it would be A MESSS but it's so fun

in my personal life I've just been filling my time with animal crossing, I don't know if you're anything like this but I swing between all of my previous fixations when I don't find a new one and I just ping-pong between getting really sucked into one thing to another. like, a few months ago I was OBSESSEDDD with the sims 2. before that I think it was stardew valley. Now I'm back on animal crossing. I finally have a Switch so I've been decorating my island from SCRATCH for the first time ever, it's fun but I also find myself running out of ideas so quickly so I end up running around my island aimlessly wondering what I should do. I love building on animal crossing with long-form youtube content in the back.

I also want to start doing fan edits again!! I used to be really into it in 2020 (I Wonder why with the state of the world then), but I'm trying really hard to dabble more because playing around in After Effects and making transitions is genuinely a lot of fun. I hope i get into it more consistently

I'm also looking forward to a concert that I'm going to with my partner soon! I've never been to a concert so it'll be my first! I'm excited to dress up and hopefully know the words to the band !!

i mostly played up my imaginary disgust because people tag me in those things and well, i am a clown who aims to please and make people laugh. I genuinely don't actually care.

Cheddar is not really an usual cheese in France though, we have some in store because of American foods like hamburger or hot dog having popularized it enough, but that's about it and about as rarely as you'll see it. When i was a kid (wayyy before internet bridged a lot of cultural gaps) i remember people being offended that it was even called cheese, but it's an outrage i haven't seen in the last two decades of my life.

It is considered a subpar cheese, because we're a cheese loving nation (and i know personally it makes me feel a little sick) but not nearly as outrageous as many non-french think it is.

and i watched enough American movies to know about the spray cheese. Some movies i watched when i was a kid were showing those off and at first i thought it was whipped cream because that's the sort of package our whipped creams come into. And then i saw it was yellow and it was no fucking way. and then i grew up just shrugging it off as this type of "the fatal American need to have a pretty good time". Like, knock yourself out, to each their own.

Every culture approach food differently, there's no right or wrong way, and French people don't have the monopoly on cheese and what a right cheese is.

ngl a lot of memes and jokes about French culture and language (which aren't directly linked to our history or politics) tend be strawmen argument of stereotypes some people exported elsewhere in the world from behaviors decades ago and/or behaviors from Parisians. (and if you don't know the rest of France have beef with Parisians, so a lot of time this is eyeroll worthy even for literally anywhere else in France.). or of the upper class and chasers.

Honestly the jokes grew old to me after like one decade, but complaining about it is completely pointless, this is mid irritation at best and the few times i rolled my eyes at some way ppl interpreted French stuff on here i had people asking me to answer for French colonization crimes in my comment (which, as someone who's both parents aren't even fully french and who suffered from said history, feels exhausting to me, i don't want to come up with a disclaimer of how France is bad everytime i'm tired of a lame joke)

Also like. not against you in particular nonny but Americans also kinda have the habit of projecting how much they don't know about others countries on how other countries might not know American culture as if Americanization wasn't one of the biggest social impact of the modern era and as if many countries' popculture isn't shapped from American medias nowadays. Bc yeah like i said, this type of things is stuff i've seen in movies since i'm a kid and just thought "oh so that's just an American thing, okay" and moved on with my life.

(also i have a diploma in USA&UK History, Literature, Culture and Linguistic, and have been on American platform blending in for the past 15 years. There's stuff that will always escape my knowledge because sometimes there's niche stuff no one realize they have to explain, or things will never get the depth they need that way, but, more often than not, I Am Aware.)

I think it was inconsistencies in our gender and sexuality that made me realize that something was different about us, more than just being autistic and adhd. I identify as a transgender lesbian, and I;m very certain of both of those things. So having times where I was like "why do I suddenly feel like a gay man?" or "why does my transitioning body make we so uncomfortable suddenly when it usually gives me so much euphoria?" really made me start to think deeper about what was going on. Then we had a really rough day at work, and while driving home it felt like the inside of my brain was really loud and I just suddenly started to be able to pick out different members voices. After that it just kind of clicked into place, a lot of other stuff made sense retroactively.

8. How many of you were there upon discovery?

I started out knowing just two others. I knew that there were more, but I couldn't really connect with them at all for the first couple weeks. Weirdly, neither of the members that I met originally are in the same state as they were, both of them have fused with other members.

Kaylee seems to think we do, but the rest of us haven't experienced anything like that. So we don't really know, but I don't think so.

I am kind of just by force lol. I just have a caring personality, and I try to make sure everyone feels like they are taken care and they have space to express themselves. (Even Sierra, who hates that I do this).

Hello and welcome!

I'm Sparrow. This is the blog for Power Rangers : Side Force, a Sander Sides au based in the Power Rangers universe. As I've stockpiled a lot of information on this au, I thought I might as well plague the world with my brain rot. If this kind of au catches your interest, I'd also recommend @its-pronounced-quoassoints TSS x Power Rangers au here. The story is a ride and a half and it's written really well. It's seriously had me hooked and inspired me to get this all down instead of just letting it mentally fester. I'd also recommend @when-day-met-the-knights posts about their au too here. General information:

•This is my first work in the fandom, and first public work in general as far as I can remember. Keeping that in mind, characters may be a bit OOC.

•This is a human au, and has the sander sides characters as well as other characters from different things done by Thomas and the crew, though it does mainly focus on the sides. It will also feature C!Thomas, so if that weirds you out for any reason, you should probably skip this au. To make things clear I see C!Thomas and Thomas Sanders the content creator as separate entities, separated by the realms of fiction and non-fiction respectively.

•A lot of the settings and plot elements are from Power Rangers, but with a bit of personal interpretation. Specifically, it's mainly based on the original MMPR series/Zordon era, and the disney series of Dino Thunder and a bit of S.P.D. There is a further reason for it.

•A big part of this au revolves around C!Thomas. Specifically, the mashing up of C!Thomas, and the character of Tommy Oliver from MMPR. In fact, the character of Tommy Oliver is leaned into quite heavily. A mix of canon and headcanon of the MMPR character sneaks its way in here. I don't want to give away too much, but it does mean that throughout the story as a whole, he is referred to as Tommy Oliver and nicknames revolve around that a fair bit, so here's a fair warning.

•I, the creator, am not from America. Despite that, I've tried to write a story set specifically in America. Because of this, I don't doubt that I've gotten a few things wrong whether it comes to geographically, to spelling, to simply culture. I've tried my best but have come to the realisation that it'll always be a weird amalgamation, because this is just a fan work.

•There are going to be a wide range of things discussed in this story from disappearances, to bad relationships, to violence. There will be content warnings for things at the beginning of chapters. It should never be too heavy or dark, it is based on a kids show, but again, if it does, there will be warnings.

•At the time that this was originally thought up and worked on, the Orange side(if there is one) has not been revealed, because of this, I use Orange for a different person.

Plot Summary:

When four teenagers get the powers of a lifetime, they must learn how to exist and thrive with a new set of abilities. With the guidance of a mentor who seems to know more than he lets on, and what happened to their predecessors being a mystery just waiting to be solved, these four Rangers need all the help they can get to find out whats true, false, safe, an dangerous in Power Rangers : Side Force!

Logan, Patton, Roman and Virgil become power rangers by accident. Thomas Oliver Sanders, their new biology teacher, helps them out. The new group of rangers learn how to live with their ranger abilities. However the past begins to come forth as it seems that their teacher is not who he seems, and the last generation of power rangers haven't quite resigned. With juggling their own school, home, ranger, and personal lives these four teens must work together as a team if they have any hope of getting to the bottom of what's truly afoot.

InfinityRoom!Tango

Tango, our lovely lonely endermite person. It's time to write down everything we know about him, don't know and some crazy theories I have so far.

In "How to Kill a Tango" Wels, False and Scar were judges. They were canonically inside Tango's head when Tango dropped in the room. As of now if room became infinite and there were multiple people inside, room would yoink them all. This event however may be the exception/clarification for this rule - judges were in spectator mod and room probably gets only those in survival. But there is a possibility that we actually saw Tango-Wels-False-Scar amalgamation all this time. I stick to the "survival mod only get abducted" idea myself.

Speaking of "How to Kill a Tango" - we have no idea when exactly room became infinite. So Tango can theoretically have a lava bucket. Though I personally believe that echoes cut out right when room takes a person, so no lava for Tango.

Tango can control fading in and out of whiteness.

Tango has said that "In the end, he [Grian] always get scared". That means room probably has (or had) at least one more Grian that we haven't heard about.

One of his mites has the the same eye that Tango has, I call it Queen Mite. There is a chance that Tango uses this mite to see what's going on in other places of the white void.

I want to draw attention to Tango's words. "Do you want to keep me company" was directed at us, but "We are going hunting" was no different, and he was talking about taking primarily us on a hunt with him, not mites. "Do you hear that? Seems like a bird just lost it's wings." was the only reaction to the echo from the cast, where person surely was talking to someone, and in this case, to us. "Why don't you go take a look at the other one? He's been here for a while, we should go say hi. I'll be there soon" was a part of our ominous convo with Tango! And then~

Tango may have been the one to TELEPORT US to New Grian. I mean, he literally later said "this is so fun! it was a good idea to send you to him". HOW COOL AND HORRIFIING IS THAT? It is kinda suiting for someone, who has pet endermites, to be able to teleport certain stuff around. But it is scary to think that Tango may teleport us whenever and wherever he wants.

Tango exploited us. Tango took us on the hunt to slow Grian down and/or win some time for Tango to get to him. Tango wasn't too far away from Grian, so he may have used us to make Grian make noise and by talking to Grian we helped Tango find Grian's exact location. There is a possibility that Tango also hoped for us to scare, confuse poor Grian and make him distressed, and some of us did. At least you amused Tango, I hope you're happy now.

Continuing documenting Tango's convo. "How kind of you" as an answer to someone welcoming local vampire inside telling Tango that Grian is with us and making latter scream. Then Tango heard us telling Grian "we have no idea what Tango's capable of" and he gave as a hint, that "endermites have a large appetite".

That hint spawned a conspiracy level theory in my brain, but I'm almost sure that it's not true: we are the mites. That's right. WE are the hungry ones. WE need to be fed with action and angst. Did you base the catalyst vampires off of other vampires in the media? Or, whats some catalyst universe specific vampire “quirks” or design choices? Lol sorry, got brain rot

the vampires in catalyst aren't really based off of any particular piece of media. they're sort of a strange amalgamation of every vampire au i've ever read, any tv shows or movies (aka twilight and first kill), plus my own little quirky details for the sake of plot.

any of the details i'm going to list below are catalyst specific according to me, but if anyone else has ever done them that's cool, i just didn't know.

vampires can go 2 years without drinking a drop of blood before they die of starvation, similar to how humans can go 2 weeks without food, just elongated to match a vampire's lifespan

most vampires feed once every month, which is less than twilight (i think) and most other vampire au's i've read, although i don't think many of them had specific hunger schedules. oh yeah it's also less than in the sims 4, if the vampire pack counts as vampire media lol

vampires aren't immortal. i gave them an age limit of 1000 because immortality is overrated anyway plus death is kinda nice sometimes. gives you a time limit. idk there was vsauce video about it that i watched once and haven't really stopped thinking about.

humans cannot be turned into vampires. if i were to implement that, though, the turning process would be drain all human blood, replace with a bit of vampire blood, yipee ur dead but also not, which just wasn't conventional and wouldn't be used in plot so i threw that whole concept out the window

vampires sleep during the day and wake up when the sun sets. i've read this in another vampire au, but am including it in this list anyway because twilight went "yeah vampires can chill during the day." however, if catalyst vampires could go out in the sun, i think all the sun would do is drain their energy and make them tired lol

for the first 40 years of a full vampire's life (20 for half-vamps), they can't fully see. i have another ask somewhere on here explaining how the process works, as well as other details.

fangs showing up only when needed isn't super original i don't think, but the whole warming of the skin when hungry thing is just a catalyst thing, i'm pretty sure.

also, like, vampires with eating disorders. i've never seen that anywhere else lol.

vampires being able to give birth (technically, minus all the issues that come with it) is also a catalyst thing i think??? idk i've only seen the first twilight movie so if vampire birth is in there.... whoops

vampires being entirely dead pretty much. no working organs, breathing isn't necessary, can't eat human food (unless the specific food holds essentially zero nutritional value), are also things i haven't seen in au's or media

vampires are just straight up a completely different species; they're not a subspecies of human. now, this would be a little weird for vampire-human... uh... breeding (i'm so sorry) but since vampires look so much like humans it's not really a big deal i guess

long story short i pretty much just went "what if we had humans and gave them fangs and a really long lifespan and then we gave one of them a shit ton of mental illness" and ran with that.

as for design choices, they're very similar to the typical vampire: pale skin, human-looking, fangs sometimes. eye colour doesn't really change if they're hungry, their pupils just get a little wider. skin tones can range from white as white can be to a dark grey, and eye colour can be anything, it just depends on the vampire and their genes, however the fuck genes work (i didn't take biology lol)

i've been meaning to write all this vampire lore out for a while, so i may be missing a few things in my list. catalyst (just like syzygy, another c!beeduo au of mine) was supposed to be a 2k one shot containing a silly little idea i had. instead, it bursted into this big, multi-chapter story, which isn't something i do often, so little things like specific details about the setting and all that other stuff aren't really thought out, because initially they really didn't need to be and i was too busy working out the plot to go back over and add those things. i'm a bit of a mess when it comes to writing longer pieces tbh.

now while catalyst may be my magnum opus, i am still– at my very core– just a silly little guy writing about minecraft men.

all the love and support has been insane, though, and i have appreciated it more than anything. it's the thing that keeps me going honestly. all the asks have helped me develop the world just a little bit more, and the insight i've been able to get, like how well my foreshadowing worked and how suspenseful i made each chapter, has helped tons as well.

the mere concept of people actively perceiving the things i put out onto the internet is crazy enough to me, so to have people thinking about my silly little fic and brainrotting about it makes me feel a little less silly (dw anon, i am also heavily brainrotting).

I don't really think in clear images, so I never see, like, one specific image of anyone in my head, it's all just kinda vibes. But with the Batfam, or other characters who I interact with in this way (the Newsies fall into the same box), I tend to see them as some amalgamation of different iterations smushed together with my own flair.

These fellas in particular are a little bit of WFA, a few bits and pieces of some comic art (couldn't tell you the specific comics), some miscellaneous fanart, and then my own headcanons and bits that my brain provides to smooth out the whole thing.

as an aroace person: yes. Absolutely. 100%. It's simply in our nature to start rebellions and commit crimes in a dramatic way that greatly inconveniences the people trying to stop us while also accomplishing nothing. Perhaps they're also mentally ill.

I'm curious now if there's anything in canon that we could take to help solidify this argument. Not that we have a case to prove or anything but just that I like to find things in canon to give credence or more believability to any headcanon

If Fintan is aro/aspec, then I'm thinking he's more on the repulsed side as opposed to neutral/favorable. Same with Bronte. There have been absolutely no love interests or even mentions of a romantic life (aside from the blanket can't date as a councilor, but that's not specific to Bronte), which differs from basically every other character that has the same baseline amount of importance. It seems like once a character is important enough to the story, their love life is mentioned (specifically a romantic partner or lack thereof) because it's seen as a glimpse into their life, a way to get to know them. It makes them more human (not in terms of species, but in terms of depth). Kenric and Oralie have their romance, there's the love amalgamation of the entire kotlcrew that Tam and Linh got drawn into once they became important to the story (Linh first and then Tam, I think it was). Bo and Ro have their complicated arranged marriage, Grizel and Sandor are together, etc.

The only other important character I can think of who doesn't have a love interest yet is Calla, but that can be considered an outlier because she died in the same book we met her in. Maybe Flori, but I don't think she's important enough to be given a love interest yet. Oo: Elwin. Elwin is another one who is important but doesn't have a love interest.

i'm getting distracted so back to my point: Bronte and Fintan have both passed the threshold of importance and should reasonably have love interests by now. And if not an interest, than a mention of some past of love or lack of love. Nearly everyone else does, and yet there is no mention. So perhaps this is something we could take to mean that they're averse, falling on the repulsed side of aro/aspec identities.

I think the canon explanation is that they are ancients and as such are too old to have love interests, but that does conflict with the eternal youth kinda thing they have going on. However!! Fintan and Bronte instead being aroace or some combination of those things are a more satisfying representation to me and I'm choosing to belief that's the reason instead.

as for Sophie: yes. please and thank you, Shannon. I think Sophie should get to be queer as a treat. She's nearly died so many times, so now she should get to kiss girls. She should be held and comforted and cared for and so gay. This reminds me I have a few queer books on my bookshelf that I grabbed at the bookstore that I still haven't read, one specifically I got because it said it was queer and there was a pretty girl with dragon wings on the cover so I was...intrigued. idk what it's about but I should read it I guess!!

seeing the feet anon has finally had me ask, Who Is Iru. i've been following you for a while and yet i don't know who iru is, all i know is that they have a hat, literally thats it and so that makes my first thought 'are people thirsting after iru because they have a mega cool hat' LMAO

Anon I’m so sorry to disappoint but this is Iru. Backstory under the cut but tldr incel boat made people hate him to the point of wanting him dead, survived but lost half his parts, and later became meat with the help of an identity-stealing flesh boat because he was tired of delaying the inevitable failing of his parts. No I don’t know why anons are Like That towards him, I specifically designed him with the intention of making him as unlikable as possible. Unfortunately he also gets multiple bingos on tumblr sexyman bingo.

Long story short(but still long because there’s A Lot): he was a regular Umbramaker(which is the mirror world equivalent of a Starcutter) designed for disaster relief, who also became such a misogynistic dickwad that he literally had his voice shut off because he was making everyone so unhappy, but he found a workaround and continued being himself and it made a bunch of other Umbramakers around him conspire to literally get him killed by starting rumors that he was involved in anti-government activities. Unfortunately he survived and turned to a life of stealing parts to constantly replace his own as they failed. It was initially just ones that had already been removed, but then he began also attacking other ships traveling alone that were in his size range to take their parts, because through a complicated mix of anger, poor processing of what caused his situation, and trying to justify his own actions, he stopped really seeing other ships as people. Also at some point he traded an oar he stole for a custom fedora on the black market, yes this detail is kinda unnecessary but it’s important to his character.

That didn’t change the fact that he’s programmed to be social, though, so when he got wind of a different Umbramaker who had escaped and was no longer affiliated with Mirror Halcandra, he immediately was like 👀 and started trying to get close to her. That other ship was Roa, who was in a similar situation of “I don’t want anything to do with the ships back there but also I am literally desperate for social contact it is driving me up the wall”, so she tolerated his bullshit for a few years and just tried to ignore the fact that he was a creep. That was until the two met and she could immediately see Oh He Is Some Kind Of Fucked Up Amalgamation Of Other Ships, I Don’t Trust Like That and basically just cut contact immediately. Unfortunately that didn’t stop him from trying to pester her, and so when he figured out that she went to the Overworld, he followed in secret, but not really because it’s hard to be secretive when you’re intentionally interacting with the person you’re stalking.

Roa met Lor, and because of that Iru also learned of her existence and gained an interest. That went about as you would expect, in that she also did not want anything to do with him. The thing is, there’s a mimic(that I just call Lon) that has decided to steal Lor’s appearance, and they didn’t know about her reaction to Iru. By chance those two meet, Iru doesn’t realize Lon is actually a fucked up creature and Lon doesn’t realize they’re supposed to hate Iru. The two hit it off somewhat, in that Lon actually tolerates him because they don’t understand the implications of half the bullshit he says, and because he is so starved for positive socialization Iru decides it isn’t a dealbreaker when he discovers Lon kills and eats people. Something something, time passes, relationship progresses to what could probably be called friendship, eventually Lon has an idea based on their origins(person who was having a time and made mimics to fuck with other people gets tired of turning things into fucked up creatures, improperly disposes of the remainder of their Mimic Making Juice™️ on a dead tree that became Lon).

They’re like “hey wanna be a fucked up creature with me so you aren’t stuck in a cycle of basically just temporarily slowing down your own death?”, to which Iru is like “let me think about it, yea” and then got slapped with mimic slutch and passed out for a day and woke up as fucked up flesh boat 2.

I never watched Winx as a kid, so I really hope I don't sound like an idiot for asking this. What exactly does the Netflix Winx series do wrong besides giving it the "dark and gritty" makeover?

So like. There are a lot of problems here and I’ll try to tackle them. I haven’t finished the reboot because I have difficulty getting through things I like, much less things I hate watch. But anyway, this gets long and is separated into parts. 

Let’s start with it’s issues on it’s own and not as an adaptation: 

It’s still pretty garbage. Not ‘the worst thing ever’. Interesting enough. But it does have problems. Some racist and homophobic and fatphobic writing. The characters range from ‘kind of a jerk’ to ‘straight up assholes who will cause physical harm for petty reasons’. The nicest one so far is Terra, but even she kinda snaps and strangles a guy with her plant powers. 

Now on to things it fails on as an adaptation!

First, the whitewashing!

Of the six main characters, 3/6 were poc-coded in the original cartoon(I say ‘coded’ because they’re not Humans from Earth but still). Aisha is black, Flora is Latina, and Musa is Chinese. 

Aisha is the only one who remains black. I’ve heard varying testimonies on Musa’s actor, but the ‘best’ I’ve heard is that she’s 1/4 Singaporean and white passing. I don’t have the authority to say if that’s in the clear or not so I’m leaving that to other fans. 

Flora gets the worst though. They cast a white woman to play her. Then backtracked and said ‘oh, this isn’t Flora. We replaced her with her white cousin Terra’. Yeah you can see the problem there. 

Characters they got rid of entirely! I’ll only discuss characters that showed up in the first two seasons of the original show since Fate only has one season. (I’d say just the first, but they included Aisha who is from Season 2). 

Let’s see. They got rid of Tecna, one of the main six girls. It’s likely because they’re going for a more ‘bootleg Hogwarts’ vibe, and Tecna’s magic being heavily technology based ruins that. So she’s just tossed altogether. 

The boys! Oh my god my boys! Sky and Riven are the only ones who were kept in, while Brandon, Timmy and Helia got scrapped and replaced as well. The other boys like Dane and Sam? Totally could’ve just given them those names and been done with it. 

Then there’s Icy, Darcy and Stormy! I’m counting them together because that’s exactly what Fate did! The three Witches are villains in the series, and instead of keeping a trio, they combined her into a single character. Beatrix. 

I think Silva was also an amalgamation of the remaining Headmaster/Headmistresses and a few other staff members but considering they condensed it to just one school it kind of makes sense. 

Sometimes there’s just a name change like the Headmistress of Alfea was changed to Farah Dowling instead of Faragonda which is so pointless. 

Overall there’s other minor characters that don’t show up, like the rest of the school staff, Mirta and Lucy, so on and so forth. But I’m less upset about that. Still upset though because I love them. 

Personality changes! And romance drama!

Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. 

I already mentioned how they made everyone an asshole in this reboot. In the original show, the only protagonist that was consistently a jerk was Riven, but he was more of the ‘grumpy but still a good guy’ type of asshole. 

Let’s compare just one character and her relationships to others!

Stella in the Original Cartoon: Preppy and sometimes a little vain, could be blunt to the point of insulting, but never malicious. Very sweet and loves her friends. She and Bloom are best friends, Stella having been the one to bring Bloom into the world of Magix and will do everything she can to make sure she’s safe. Stella’s love interest is Brandon, who is bffs with Bloom’s love interest Sky. Stella and Brandon are very cheesy and cute together. They aren’t usually jealous, and can even make a competition out of ‘how many phone numbers can I get?’. 

Stella in Fate: Total bitch to all her roommates. She’s getting the common ‘my mom’s a bitch who puts pressure on me so I’m going to be a bitch’ thing that’s become popular now. Since Brandon was deleted, they put her in a love triangle with Bloom and Sky, Sky being Stella’s ex bf. And despite breaking up with him, Stella sees him just talking to Bloom and decides ‘Hm. Let’s prey on her insecurities that she doesn’t belong here, and manipulate her into leaving!’ Which includes walking through a forest where there was recently a man attacked and viscously killed by some kind of monster, so I’m putting it up to attempted murder. 

Yeah. Everyone’s kind of like that. It’s awful. 

Bloom’s backstory and parents!

Okay, this can kind of fall under both ‘personality changes’ and ‘plot changes’ but it deserves it’s own section. 

In the Original Cartoon, Bloom’s home kingdom was attacked and destroyed by villains searching for something called the Dragon Flame. Bloom was a baby with said power, so her older sister sent her to Earth, a world without Magic, where she would be safe and hidden. Mike and Vanessa find her and adopt her, loving her and raising her very well. They are good parents. Bloom learns she has powers when she meets Stella, and instinctively uses Magic to protect her. 

In Fate, the only thing really the same is that Bloom was sent to Earth. I’m a little unclear on why, but instead of giving her loving adoptive parents, they made her a Changeling with emotionally abusive parents! Let me elaborate a little: Instead of adopting Bloom of their own free will, Mike and Vanessa’s real child died in the hospital and was secretly replaced with Bloom. Her parents are also, as mentioned, emotionally abusive. So much so that Fate!Bloom’s powers first manifested by setting them on fire in the middle of the night.

Fun. Ain’t it? 

Now onto plot points!

Again, pretty much the only thing the same is ‘Bloom discovers she has Magic, goes to another Dimension to learn at a school called Alfea. Gets into adventures with her Roomates while trying to figure out where she’s really from’. 

The whole ‘Burned ones’ were.... not a thing at all. There wasn’t any kind of ‘barrier’ to keep out ‘dangerous creatures’ or anything. 

I’m not going to go over every single subplot but that was just. No. They were easily allowed to go outside the school. 

The whole vibe

This is a big thing to talk about. While the reboot went for ‘dark and gritty’ over the bright colors and sparkles, it also went for ‘bootleg Hogwarts’ instead of anything interesting. 

In the reboot, the merging of Magic and Technloogy is mostly like. ‘Yeah we go to school in this old ass castle and we don’t use guns in weaponry class, but we have smartphones and social media and Harry Potter!”. 

In the Original??? The whole world was very Magitech. It was a combination of Magic and Scifi! Kinda Steven Universe style actually. 

The transformations!!!

Look. LOOK. Winx Club is a Magical Girl show! They have those beautiful transformation sequences that last a solid minute or so of screen time. And they also have like. At least one new Transformation a Season, which comes with an ungodly amount of different cool outfits. 

The reboot? One transformation sequence. And while the effects are nice, Bloom doesn’t even get a new outfit. Just a few flames coming off her that look vaguely like wings. 

SPEAKING OF! They are Faeries!!!! But they don’t have wings????? What????

Look idgaf about your effects budget you could’ve made the cheesiest shit like the live action Sailor Moon stuff and fans would’ve loved it!

Bonus: The fact that they didn’t have to change anything to make it ‘Dark’!

So like. Netflix decided to take all the color out of it, and make it ‘dark’ by having the characters smoke and drink and have sex and say swears. 

But they.... really didn’t have to! The original cartoon was plenty dark, despite it’s colorful aesthetic! If you wanted to do a more serious reboot, you could have easily done it by focusing more on those aspects. 

Hell, there are many fans who have done it. I’m one. I know a couple others as well.

Danganronpa 39: Synthesized Despair- Chapter 0: Prologue

Kasane Teto slowly opened her eyes and got up from the uncomfortable sitting position she was in. She looked around a bit before figuring out she was in a bathroom stall, when did she pass out in a public restroom?

She pushed open the stall door and silently looked around. It seemed clean, the soap dispensers and sinks seemed a bit dusty, but it was still relatively clean. But her concerns weren't about the cleanliness of the place but rather how she got there. The last thing she remembered was leaving a grocery store, how did she wake up in a restroom stall?

She walked out of the room, hoping that getting a better look of the whole place would make her remember something but it only confused her more. She was now standing in a hallway which, like the bathroom, was dusty but relatively clean. The pink haired girl looked around, there seemed to be no other person in sight

Was she alone here?

She started pacing down the hallway, the only sound that reached her ears being the echoes of her own footsteps and her heavy breathing

Had she woken up here too?

She turned out a corner when she saw someone, a girl, examining her surroundings. Teto couldn't see her well but from she could tell, the girl had short purple hair and pale skin. She wore a grey-ish purple jacket, a white shirt of some sort, a long black skirt that reached her knees and a black pair of flats

Teto tried to hide behind the doorway, hoping the purple haired girl would overlook her as her eyes scanned the room, but, to Teto's slight dismay, she didn't

"Can I help you?"

She sounded hesitant, but who could blame her? If she was in the same situation as Teto, she had every right to be confused and hesitant

"Uhhh Hi, I'm Teto Kasane, the Super High-School Level-" the redhead cut herself off as the shorter girl sighed and rolled her eyes

She clearly was not amused

"Introductions are nice and all, but if you can't tell me how I got here or to get out, I really don't care"

Teto watched the purple haired girl walk past her. She had to do something, she couldn't let herself be left alone

"Well, what if we work together to get out? Wouldn't it be logical to get to know who you're working with?"

She wasn't sure if that would work but the girl slowed down before stopped, almost as if she was considering Teto's words

"Thanks but no thanks, I'm sure I can do this on my own. However I'll make sure to keep your offer in mind, Kasane"

And with that, she walked off. Teto was left unsure of what to do

It must have been a solid half an hour since Teto saw that girl, she had been mindlessly walking around the area, when she saw a white haired girl approach hee

She was definitely a good head or so taller than the redhead herself. She wore a knee-length grey dress and an apron tied around her waist, her long white hair was tied back into a messy bun, secured by a purple and black bow. She looked as though she was struggling to remain standing up

"Are you Teto Kasane?"

She had a thick Russian accent, Teto was almost unable to understand her

Teto subconsciously chuckled

"No, you've definitely got the wrong person"

"Oh... Well uhhh sorry I ..."

The white haired girl managed to stutter out, she seemed like she was dying of embarrassment. It made Teto feel like a horrible person

"Hey, I was just joking... Teto Kasane, Super High-School Level Prankster, at your service"

"Oh, okay, uhh.. follow me, I guess?" The taller girl stammered "I mean, I know It's kinda weird to follow someone you just met in an unfamiliar environment but..."

The girl sighed, motioned for Teto to follow her and started walking out of the corridor, checking every few moments to make sure the redhead was still behind her.

They walked around the building for a while, the Russian girl in the lead seemed to have no idea where she was going: but, finally, she stopped in front of a door, above it was a sign reading "GYM". The white haired girl pushed open the door.

There stood 14 other people, around the same age as Teto, all of them looked so different from one another.

Teto scanned the room, maybe she'd see a familiar face. Her eyes landed on a certain purple haired girl, the girl from before.

Teto rushed to her but before she could say anything, a sound, similar to that of a school bell, rang throughout the room; on the stage at the back of the room appeared a small stuffed doll that looked like an amalgamation of two different dolls. On one side, she had long turquoise hair in pigtails, a sleeveless, gray, button-up shirt and a short black skirt. On the other she had black hair in the same pigtail style, a gray shirt with short, poofy sleeves, and the same black skirt. Both sides shared a tie that was half blue-half red

Everyone stood in silence and confusion for a bit before the silence was broken by a red haired girl who was standing next to Teto

"So that's it? We gathered here for a plushy to just pop into existence?"

Just then, the tiny, stuffed doll on the stage jumped on her feet, she looked... offended... in a way

"I am not a plushy! I am Hachune Miku and I'm your headmistress!"

Silence fell once again only to be broken by the same girl

"Holy shit, it talked!"

Hachune Miku became furious with the girl "I am not an "it"! I am your headmistress and you will refer to me and respect me as such!" She soon calmed down "Anywho! Welcome, students to your new school and home! You'll live here, with your classmates for the rest of your lives! I'd say that you shouldn't try to get out but there is no way of leaving!" She laughed as silence fell among the "students" once more

The tiny headmistress continued "or, maybe I should say that there is a way out but, oh, you're not gonna like it, are you?" She laughed once more "Oh well! The only way out is to murder one of your classmates! Did I mention this is a Killing Game? Anyway! It doesn't matter how you kill someone, just don't get caught! Happy killing!"

The stuffed doll then disappeared back bellow the stage.

"Hey! Don't just disappear on us! What do you mean "Kill one of our classmates"?! Come back here stuffed lady!" A boy shouted from the back, Teto didn't even bother looking back at him, instead she turned to the purple haired girl next to her

"So uhhh" The redhead didn't know what to say, but it didn't seem to matter as everyone started to slowly leave the gym. Would she EVER get a chance to talk to this girl...

The red haired prankster started walking out of the gym along with everyone else, her hands in her pockets only to be stopped just outside the room by the same purple haired girl, she didn't look particularly happy but her expression had definitely softened from the last time Teto saw her

"The name's Uta Utane, I look forward to working with you, Kasane"

Teto was sure she saw a smile form on the girl's- no- on Uta's face but she couldn't be sure as she had already turned around and walked away. Either way, those words brought an indescribable amount of joy and satisfaction to Teto, it didn't really matter if they only were an acceptance of teamwork, Teto also saw it as an invitation to make a friend, to have someone to rely on in this messed up game...

If Fintan were to have wings in your wings au, what would he have? Also yes the pirate shirts are very sexy and brb gonna go read chapter twenty to see the Fintan boyo

If Fintan's wings had grown, I think they would've ended up as an amalgamation of a bunch of different wings all thrown together due to...lore things in the story I haven't fully touched on yet. I mentioned scales around the base, so I think he would also have some dragon inspiration--but not necessarily the same species/coloration as either Marella or Linh. I don't think I specified the color in chapter 26, but I'm thinking a deep deep maroon bordering on black in terms of scale color, but that the leathery appearance of those wings would be mixed with feathers. Phoenix feathers, more specifically.

Phoenix's have kinda become an important motif in the story and Fintan would be another great place to add one. It fits with the fire theme he's got going along with his mindset of a new world rising from the ashes that he had in canon, which has kinda carried over in a new application in the wings au. And I tried to make all the wings a representation of some aspect (or more than one) of the character, like them in wing form.

A few areas of leathery wing would likely be replaced with sections of thin insect wing membrane, though no specific insect comes to mind. Aside from the dominating dragon/phoenix combination there'd just be a confusing mix of other animals/creatures showing up in little places in contrast with everything else that doesn't quite work together but has been forced into cooperation, if that makes sense.

Essentially, his wings would be confusing and not fully one kind if his had grown. They'd have been incomplete, pieces put together in ways they aren't supposed to be but that he has to work with.

And hooray! Glad the pirate shirts are sexy enough for you. He is wearing them in I think every scene he's in simply because I decided that's what he was going to do

I hope you enjoy chapter 20 for the Fintan content at the beginning. He comes back after that in chapter 26-28, though I will say if you just skip around some things might not make sense at all because there are like 250k words of content all related to each other to give context that is missing if you just skip around. But! Either way I hope you enjoy!!
