I’ve ranted to friends before abt how Kiryu is just genuinely so stupid that it comes of as dick-ish and inconsiderate to the people around him ESPECIALLY majima like?? He absolutely knows majima would walk through hell for Kiryu and takes full advantage of that in the worst ways and I don’t even think he fully realizes that that’s what he’s doing. Like please I love kazumaji as much as the next person but really only at a very specific point in time when they were both at their least fucked up gsgdfdf (kiwami 1 obv)

All is to say I agree please put the whole rgg fandom in an intro to literature class I think they’d greatly benefit gsgdf

kiryu is one of my favorite characters BECAUSE he's just so ass backwards. like On Paper he's a good guy: left the yakuza and is trying to live a normal life, has an orphanage and takes care of kids etc etc. but then you like. ACTUALLY look into him and its so funny.. he's such a dick and he doesn't even know and i love him. he just wants to do what he thinks is right and SOMETIMES he's right but his judgement also puts other people in peril (i.e. majima and daigo)

Majima's freedom and Kiryu's naivety

So, Kiryu has a way of coping with his social difficulties by adopting strict rules and beliefs to guide himself through human interactions. This helps him out a lot, but also makes him very resistant to change and hard-headed sometimes. And sometimes even cruel.

Like, for instance, let's take Majima. Kiryu really admires him, and trusts him, and believes that Majima is very capable and can handle anything life throws his way. And technically this is super sweet, and amazing, but Kiryu believes it so wholeheartedly that it becomes cruel naivety.

And one of the first times we properly see this is in Kiwami, in the scene on the pier. After helping Kiryu out big time all through the story and in that momrnt, Majima got shot in the stomach, and fell into the freezing December waters of the Tokyo Bay. And Kiryu sees this and just… leaves. He has more pressing matters to deal with. Majima-san will be fine, he's Majima-san, after all. He can survive anything. Even swimming out of cold waters alone while bleeding his guts out, apparently (oh, the desire to punch Kiryu in that moment, we could barely contain it).

And in our playthrough this happened almost right after we finished Majima Everywhere, so it was twice as gutpunchy of a dick move.

Nevermind that Majima survived this. Of course he did, that's all he does in his life when he's pressed against the wall (or depth of the ocean). The point is that he shouldn't be put in these situations, especially by people he trusts.

(This thing with Kiryu thinking that Majima can handle anything and doesn't need any help at all will keep going on and on in the future, each time becoming more and more of a shitty thing pull. It includes things like, let's say, making Majima come back to Tojo in y3, leaving him to deal with the Nishikiyama family, and so on. But there's bit more to it at play than naïve beliefs by that point, We'll get to it in time.)

And yes, this was a long winded intro to saying that Majima had all the rights to be pissed at Kiryu after that and ram the bathhouse with the truck at full speed. It seems that he threatened the girl there just for show. He talked politely to her and let her go immediately when she said she's in love with someone.

Kiryu deserved this ass whooping, 100%.

(We also strongly believe that after this incident Majima bought Shangri-La. Like, both the building and the business. But, since it was connected to unpleasant memories and he just really didn't like the place, Majima left it as it is. Didn't touch it at all since then)

(And this is why even as far as y6 Shangri-La is still standing there, boarded up, empty, the place where the truck hit the building still clearly visible and only getting more decrepit with age)

So, anyways, Kiryu and Majima don't see each other for a bit after that. Majima has time to cool off, think about it more… and then news come in. Shimano is dead, and in an indirect way he's dead because of Kiryu. Shimano who put Majima through the worst hell and then back. Shimano who Majima stayed with, even after all that, pretending to be unruly and free. Shimano, who Majima was unable to break away from, almost freezing each time he was around. It's been over a decade of mad dog barking on a leash. And then bam, Shimano is gone. Thanks (somewhat) to Kiryu.

Imagine what this does to a man. To Majima. After all these years. After Majima Everywhere.

And he sends Kiryu this text. 

And it is already a lot. But with this context, knowing the story of y0, I doubt my or Majima's heart will ever be still.

He'll need some time to process all this. To really grasp that he is really truly free now. To realise that Kiryu somehow helped him get his freedom. To understand what being free even means.

So Majima will not be available, will be out of it for a while afterwards. Missing the finale of the game and some context.

But, get this, there’s even more – later everyone learns that Kiryu didn't kill Dojima. And, see, Majima already kinda made his peace with it. He had to live for 10 years knowing Kiryu, with all his big words about honour and not murdering people, still did it. For whatever reason he had, it doesn't matter. He got down from his idealistic horse and got dirty like the rest of them.

And it's not like Majima cared. Not like it meant something to him, this small corner of his heart that sorta maybe felt good seeing Kiryu stubbornly prevail with his beliefs intact even in the most gruesome places. Whatever, amaright? Majima is fine. He moved on, and can still appreciate Kiryu's company even with this smal pang of something not being the same anymore.

And then. It turns out Kiryu never stained his hands with blood. At all. He went through prison to help his brother, not that this sounds familiar to Majima, and- 

Majima will be processing all this for a while.

Akikiryu anon from before. It's a shame that you don't get feedback much on them! Again, they're amazing! I guess we really are a rare breed given how little I see Akikiryu anything out there. Hell, I feel like there's a criminal lack of Akiyama focused fics period! but I digress.

PLEASE RGG! Let our boy do this. It's SUCH a perfect premise for him. I've seen people say that an Akiyama focused Gaiden wouldn't work bc "what do you do with him? "They were already struggling to find reasons for him to be around in 5" It's this!

And Akiyama meeting Ichiban? That'd also be great. I've always felt that out of all the pre-7 characters, Akiyama fits the whole "team combat" thing the best. He's always teaming up with someone else. I think the only protagonist he hasn't teamed up with directly is Saejima iirc. He's even teamed up with Majima in Dead Souls! He's even Ichiban's ally in RGG Online! Kinda crazy they haven't met in mainline canon. He just translates so naturally into it, even if the other games have shown us that he can easily hold his own and doesn't necessarily need allies.

No you’re right and you should say it— it’s comparatively slim pickings in general for Akiyama fans. His absence in Y7 didn’t help, as I think there is also something to be said for when (in terms of game releases) he is introduced, and what game is your entry point into the series. I sorta hoped Ishin might spur some more fics, but alas…

I was crazy enough to start with Y5, so that was my Akiyama intro. While in hindsight I see what people mean about Akiyama being a bit tacked on, his appearance coincided with where the game’s plot imo REALLY picked up in a good way. I didn’t know shit about him at the time but got 100% hooked on his bisexual uncle-dad “who the hell is this guy?” energy. lmao

Which is to say YEAH, I think there’s plenty to where he could absolutely could carry his own game! When I played the Judgment games, I thought back to Y5 and - purely speculative tbf - wondered if Akiyama wasn’t something of a prototype for Yagami’s character. I think sleuthing, being wicked smaht, and sticking his nose into trouble really fits Akiyama well, too and could be a proven basis to work with.

And for him to NOT have a role in exposing the Daidoji just seems like…a big obvious miss to me. Still, I think I’m at the point now though where I’ll take any new Akiyama content I can get. Also new Hana content. Did she ever come back from countryside oblivion?? Tell us, RGG…

It’s no problem, I love answering questions like these!!! But also that’s a RRREAALLLYYYY hard question for me bc it changes depending on what I’m currently obsessed with lollll and it’s even harder for me to rank from least favorite to favorite so,,, if you don’t mind I’m just gonna keep it to anime/games and list like off the top of my head in no particular order!! If that’s ok:

-Yusuke from YYH (I’m a sucker for the “punk guy with a heart of gold” trope and also the first episode/chapter where he shows up to his own funeral and gets shocked at how much everyone misses him is like,,, the only anime/manga scene that actually makes me cry lmfao. It added a lot more depth to his character as well and I thought it was cool that Togashi managed all that in literally the first volume)

-Illumi from HxH (his design is iconic and I just think he’s cool. It’s honestly mostly the design… I wanted to only do one character per series for this post but Chrollo and Kite are also up there)

-Jolyne from JJBA (funny, badass and kinda relatable in a way??? Like I’m not very confrontational at all but somehow I just. Get her. I also love the way she speaks lmao)

-Spike from Cowboy Bebop (Looking at my blog theme I bet you could never guess! there’s a lot of reasons I like him but to keep it brief I just think he’s very fun to analyze bc his character is so complex if that makes sense?? Also he’s hot which is a bonus)

-Ginko from Mushi-shi (just seems like a cool dude!! Helpful and knowledgeable)

-Vash from Trigun 1998 (How can you NOT like him,,, I immediately liked him since his intro in episode one lmao. Forever mourning the loss of his accent in the 2023 version)

-N from Pokémon (This one’s the hardest to explain for some reason but tbh I just think that he’s cool! His backstory and mannerisms are really interesting and as a Pokémon fan it’s nice to see when they get really creative with the human characters! Also keeping true to my one character per series rule here but Guzma and Team Skull as a whole are also hilarious and I love them)

-Majima from Yakuza (specifically the version from 0, but I like all of them. He just makes me laugh lmao which is super fun!! But he also shows that he’s actually a very respectable guy on a lot of occasions, which bumped him up for me. Oh also his intro in 0 IS SO GOOD)

-Klavier from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (I’m ngl I just think he’s hot but also he made me laugh a lot… and it was always just generally really fun/interesting whenever you got to talk to him in game)

-Otacon from MGS (Like a lot of other characters on this list it just started with him being really funny. I mean come on you really can’t beat a character introduction where you hype the dude up to be this super serious science hacker guy, and then when you finally meet him he pisses his pants and rants to you about anime… Aside from that his codec calls are really fun, Otasune is a good ship, and his character development as he ages is also interesting)

what's your personal ship with kiryu (outside of majima because rgg don't let my man's heart's desires catch a BREAK) if i may ask? cause i love date but kiryu needs a Best Bro (also i'm such a sucker for date/adachi) and date is the BEST of the best. i love the idea that of course he was down bad for tachibana, but because of their lack of just being able to Have Time Together among all the chaos, it just became an unrequited scar upon his piles of piles of self-loathing.

Tbh Kiryu is not my favorite character by a long shot. I don’t hate him by any means! I just find other characters more interesting and like their personalities more. 0 and 8 are peak Kiryu for me, and I think it has a lot to do with the amount of character interactions: he is still learning the ropes in 0 and relies on and interacts more with other people (Nishiki, Tachibana, Oda, even his interactions with Kuze I found pretty cool). In Infinite Wealth, just the fact that he has an actual party to interact with elevated him to me—that dynamic intro where he and Ichiban tag team Wong Tou, or the little moment where he, Chitose and Tomi are filming the video and just... hanging out and being chill for a change, for example. Those little moments made me like him much more when I used to be pretty indifferent aside from like, his interactions with Haruka which I found the cutest thing ever.

Since I was indifferent for the longest time, I never thought much about which ship of his I like most. I really dig him and Kaoru though, but I’m not sure how popular that is 😭 Also, Nishiki, of course! I’m not too picky though, I think I’ve read fics of pretty every Kiryu ship just cause I thought they looked interesting and were well-written. My favorite AO3 author has written Kiryu with Majima, Nishiki, Saejima, Ryuji, even Someya, and I eat up all their fics like nobody’s business.

Man, it’s been a while since I thought about Adachi x Date though 😭😭 I’m more into Adachiwagi, but what little I’ve read of him and Date has been very good so like, potential new OT3 here 👀 Adachi not getting any luck with women but being a hit with old men is such a funny concept to me. They just love this bear of a man, and who wouldn’t?

Like I mentioned in her intro post that there is an idea of Cori and Okita ending up together after some years. He got her to see Heisuke off so he goes to check on her later on, they share their grief etc. This would tie back to the "present" with Kori and Majima's relationship in LYLMM, them ending up together but it's not the real deal.

BUT now that I thought more about the possibility of this whole religious aspect of her character, being French and Catholic and I was thinking that there are multiple ways the whole thing could go for her after Todo passes, so we can still keep the version with Okita...

But for extra pain and historical flavor he could die from tuberculosis like irl, cementing for Cori the idea that this is her punishment for being "sinful" before marriage like having two out of two lovers die can't be coincidence so it could push her to remain on her own for life, too scared to love anyone ever again

OR we scratch that with Okita entirely... and this would be the way happier option, so Tom wants to go back to America iirc after his substory, so maybe he sees how depressed Cori is and offers that he takes her with him and she would agree as the whole place would remind her of Todo which is kinda unbearable..

so she goes with him and maybe they even end up getting married, not that they necessarily love each other romantically but he knows her, he knows she's not bad or super sinful or anything, she just went after her desires which he can respect as he wanted to become a samurai so badly as well, so he gets to have his peace of having a wife, so obligatory societal duties are fulfilled and she doesn't have to worry about being ostracized from society anymore or she goes with him and just becomes a nun if we want to keep the religious thematic ongoing, feeling the need to repent for her "sins"

if we're talking about ships that like fans actually ship i hope everyone who genuinely ships him with sagawa explodes. like there is nothing romantic about their dynamic, sagawa abuses and blackmails him and has him figuratively on a leash and is constantly having people watch him so he doesn't step out of line. there's nothing romantic about any of their interactions and it just makes me so uncomfortable. like what the fuck

13. Your favorite friendship they have

okay this is hard. because like I LOVE kiryu and majima and the trust and respect they have for each other, like that's really obvious, i also just really really do ship them. but for as much as i love them as a ship, him and saejima just are everything to me and fundamentally the most important person to each other.

like majima waited 25 years for saejima to return, he went back to the yakuza for saejima, he went back to the boss who tortured him both because he's loyal and because he needs to be there to welcome saejima back. and he does all this thinking saejima will kill for him it because majima believes he deserves that for betraying him. and if course that doesn't happen because majima is as important to saejima. and the fact majima only ever shows saejima what happened to his eye, the vulnerability of that scene and saejima instantly realizing he lost his eye for him.... i LOVE them. also their duo fight/move in y7 was my intro to both of them so like my first impressions was saejima and majima are super close and well I was right!

26. When do you think they were being "themselves" the most?

oh that's so hard because he's always always putting on a mask in some manner but see previous answer: he's most himself around saejima, he confesses his weakness/doubts in 5, he shows him what happened to his eye in 4, he lets his accent slip around him, so I guess my answer is any of the moments we see between those two even though sometimes majima is still putting on a mask. (He slips right back into being all jokey with saejima after the confession!) because for as much as i love him and makoto, majima is still not fully himself around her. because he knows he can't be, she needs to be safe and he has to protect her and help her and he can't do that while truly being open about who he is.

28. The most unnecessary thing they ever did?

majima i do actually love the moment but why did you drive a truck through shangri-la, like now ichiban doesn't have his home and all those workers are unemployed. you didn't have to do that. majima why.

Hi Nyx!~ I don't have access to the yakuza games (I live vicariously through let's plays lol) so I've only seen yakuza 0 and kiwami 1/2. Based on the amount of fav characters, I'm going to say yakuza 0 is my fav. Fav character is also Majima ofc so the majima everywhere system was a treat XD (although I have a soft spot for nishitani and tachibana <3).

Fav side quest. . . I like the ones that are tied to mini games (like the pocket racing one and club cabaret) but I also like the the obatarian strikes/again hahaha.

Fav battle. . . It's a three way tie on side battles between the convenience store brawl, dominatrix assist and Idk the name but where one angry guy lands into a car and then is nervous as he is taken away by the dangerous individuals inside it ':D. Fav main battle is the Kuzan battle in the sewers (The intro leading up to that fight alone is insane ^A^!)

Omg I totally forgot about Nishitani but he is SO fun I wish they had done more with him... Like the perfect chaos agent lmao (other than Majima himself lol). I'm watching my partner play through 0 now (finally convinced him to play it lol) and I'm very excited to watch the saga with Tachibana and Oda again bc I love them lol (ugh see I just love everyone in these games sigh)

I WAS LITERALLY GONNA MENTION THE OBATARIAN QUEST omg she's such a queen I love her. I remember ignoring pocket racing in 0 but when I had to do it for Majima everywhere I got really into it lmao. Anything for Kazumaji lol

honestly that sewer battle is so cool... by far my favorite battle in 0, what an entrance. Just when you think you're done too! Also how could I forget about the REAL best battle in the series, the fight with Goromi (I need a Goromi dating sim ASAP)

What's another character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them? Okay, really only applies to Yakuza 0, and this is a fandom that one (1) person on here will be familiar with, but Majima's intro in that game - hosting the cabaret, not using violence against the customer yet still absolutely holding the upper hand during and after their fight and being smarmy about it - had strong Kang Do Young (Liar Game kdrama) energy and that may be the point at which there was no escape for me.

What was your first impression of this character? How about now? So, I knew a bit about the character before because of outsidexbox videos on YouTube (seeing them talk about the games is what got me interested in the first place, since fighting games like this aren't my usual, but these seemed to have a lot on top of that). So first impression when he showed up in Yakuza Kiwami was, "Oh hey here he is, it's the silly character who will attack you everywher- oh he's uh. He's beating a guy with an umbrella now. That was unexpected. …and now he's literally jumping and clicking his heels together in excitement at the prospect of fighting the player character, okay I'm still intrigued." Then it was fun whenever I got to see him through the game, and especially after he showed up as Goromi, my impression was, "This guy is incredible, he is the character ever, also he's so gender, I kinda want to be him." My impression now, though? Something along the lines of "I hate this character he is the worst why is he like this (affectionate)."

I think I forgot why exactly I adore the y.akuza series and now I’m replaying 0 because I have no self control and wanted to before playing 6 anyway (5 burnt me out there’s too much content somehow, still haven’t beaten it Im in the finale and I got so tired) also I missed my delightful little man who I do love very much and I missed out on like half the substories and most of the minigames plus real estate and cabaret club

Anyway it’s probably one of my favorite games I very much love it despite essentially skipping all the stuff I learned I loved in the later games (I adore the story it makes sense at all it’s a delight, weirdly almost straightforward)
