Harding: 2023 NCAA Division II Football National Champions
MCKINNEY, Texas — Harding made history by winning its first NCAA Division II national championship in a 38-7 victory over top-seeded Colorado School of Mines at McKinney ISD Stadium in Texas on Saturday.
The Bisons recorded 502 rushing yards in the winning effort to become the first school in NCAA history with more than 6,000 yards on the ground in a single season.
"It's 100 percent guys that love each other, believe in the brotherhood that care deeply," Harding head coach Paul Simmons said. "Let's honor God with how we love one another, how we work, how we sacrifice… that was really evident with how we battled today."
Running back Blake Delacruz led the way for Harding with 212 yards on 27 carries, while Braden Jay rushed 11 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns.
Colorado School of Mines struck first on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Matocha to running back Nick Roper. The score gave the Orediggers a 7-0 lead with 9:06 to play in the first quarter.
But from there, it was all Bisons.
Harding, who finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record, scored 38 unanswered points and held Colorado School of Mines to 341 yards of total offense to secure the championship victory.
Bison running back Jhalen Spicer started the scoring party with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Jay gave Harding the lead with rushing scores of 10 and nine yards in the second quarter to push the Bisons ahead 21-7 at the half.
Harding made a statement on its opening drive of the third quarter with a four-play, 87-yard drive capped by a 73-yard rushing touchdown by Jay.
Leading 31-7 with 11:58 to play in the fourth quarter, quarterback Cole Keylon pounded in a one-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Bisons a 38-7 lead.
Keylon completed two passes for 46 yards and added 20 rushing yards on seven carries.

A quick Google search of Larry Page shows him primarily in dress shirts and at times, donning a suit jacket. If you do the same with Mark Zuckerberg the question you should be asking is: “How many times does he wear that fleece jacket?” The way that Zuckerberg dresses is, to many of us, reminiscent of a college student: hoodies, jeans, and t-shirts. His style is no-frills, but this is done for a reason. For the CEO and President of a company whose user base is 1/12th of the population of the entire world, it’s somewhat expected that you would dress in a manner proportional to your wealth. What Mark has instead chosen to do is remain dressed as a typical guy. In many ways, what he wears makes him accessible and that is precisely what he strives for.

Ferris State: 2022 NCAA Division II College Football National Champions
It’s 1,050 miles from Muskegon, Michigan, to McKinney, Texas, the site of the 2022 Division II NCAA football title game.
But on Saturday, the two seemed a lot closer as Ferris State wide receivers Brady Rose and CJ Jefferson — who both starred for Muskegon high school teams — delivered big plays in the Bulldogs’ 41-14 mauling of Colorado School of Mines for FSU’s second straight national championship.
Ferris State became the fourth team to win back-to-back D-II titles this century, and the first since Northwest Missouri State did it in 2015-16. (Grand Valley State also won consecutive titles in 2002-03 and 2005-06.)
Rose, the former Mona Shores star, connected with Jefferson, the former Muskegon standout, for a 48-yard gain on a halfback pass early in the second quarter to set up a field goal, and Jefferson had a 19-yard run for a touchdown late in the quarter to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 20.
Meanwhile, Ferris State’s defense harassed Mines QB John Matocha and completely shut down the Orediggers’ offense. Mines entered Saturday’s game averaging more than 40 points a game; it managed just 21 yards in the first half. Matocha, who won the Harlon Hill Trophy (D-II’s version of the Heisman) on Friday night, had just two completions in the first half — and one to a Ferris State player; Matocha’s throw late in the second quarter popped off the hands of his receiver and into the arms of FSU defensive back Sidney McCloud, who took it 31 yards for a 27-point FSU lead.
The Bulldogs’ offense did just fine without a Harlon Hill finalist, as Mylik Mitchell completed 14 of 18 passes for 161 yards to keep FSU moving. Jefferson had seven catches for 95 yards and Rose added four catches for 50 yards and five rushes for 39 yards to his long pass. (He also had a tackle on defense.)
On defense, FSU’s Caleb Murphy, the Harlon Hill runner-up, went without a sack — he had 25½ entering the game — but still had three tackles (1½ for loss) and pressured Matocha all day. Jordan Jones had two sacks and 2½ tackles for loss for the Bulldogs as well. The dominance on defense for FSU was such that the Orediggers didn’t pick up their initial first down until there was 7:26 remaining in the second quarter; the Orediggers’ first third-down conversion didn’t come until there was just 16:27 remaining in the game, after nine straight failures.
Indeed, prior to the third-down conversion — a 6-yard pass from Matocha to T Smith on third-and-4 from FSU’s 16 — Mines’ biggest play had been a 25-yard punt that bounced off an FSU player and was recovered for a 50-yard gain. The Bulldogs’ defense recovered quickly, forcing two incompletions, a run for no gain and, finally, a sack by Jones on fourth-and-10. After the Orediggers got their first third-down conversion, they scored on the next play on a 10-yard pass from Matocha to Michael Zeman.
After another Ferris State touchdown and a swap of fruitless drives by each team, Mines scored its second TD as Matocha found Josh Johnston on a 14-yard pass.
But Ferris State wasn’t done, as Mitchell led the Bulldogs on another clock-killing drive before handing the reins at quarterback in the red zone to Carson Gulker. He scored his third TD of the game on a push by the offensive line that carried him about 6 yards. Gulker had eight carries for 17 yards but scored from 2, 1 and 6 yards out.
The Bulldogs finish the season at 14-1, with their lone loss coming Oct. 15 against Grand Valley State. This is FSU’s eighth straight 11-win season, the fourth-longest active streak in all divisions, behind only Ohio State (10, Alabama (10) and FCS-level North Dakota State (11).

Saturday’s Observations
In no particular order, here were some observations from yesterday (Saturday, January 30, 2021):
- NW MO State played their most complete game, and had a completely dominating win on the road at Central Missouri. The final was 80-37 (yes, that is correct: 80-37!). In the past three seasons, the Bearcats have lost just one road game, and it was last year at Central Missouri. This was their first game back in the Central Missouri Arena.....and wow, they were impressive yesterday. This also came two days after the Bearcats just barely escaped at Lincoln (MO). The Bearcats are now 12-1 on the season.
- After having 6 straight games postponed or cancelled, Colorado School of Mines was back in action.....and they looked really impressive. Yesterday’s final was 86-70, yet the Orediggers led by 20+ for most of the second half. The Orediggers are a very well-coached team that shares the ball really well. They pass the ball with crispness, and, well....they are just really good. Brendan Sullivan is a 6′6″ wing that is the team’s leading scorer, and he’s smooth. He can shoot it, put it on the floor and finish at the rim, and has a mid-range game. He’s nice. I really like Kobi Betts. He’s a 6′3″ point guard who has great poise and makes good decisions. He gets the ball to the right people at the right time. The rotation includes 6′5″ Ben Boone, 6′8″ Austin Means, 6′7″ Michael Glen, 6′5″ Titus Reed....and recently, 6′4″ Trent Dykema. They are now 9-0 and ranked #1 in the latest NABC poll. It’s the best team out of the RMAC that I’ve seen in a long time.
- I have enjoyed watching Dallas Baptist, who is now 10-2. This is a well-coached team that is balanced, with size. Chandler Jacobs is really good.... REALLY good! He’s an excellent student, an accounting major and a high character human being....and oh, he can flat out play! With this said, the Patriots are far from a one-man team, as Ricky Lujan, the freshman point guard, can play! The wings - Carson Hughes and Jalen White - are deceivingly good. The more you watch them, the more you realize their talent and contributions. William Heather is just a sophomore, yet the 6′10″ big man is gaining confidence and is evolving nicely. Also, keep an eye on 6′6″ freshman Cameron Kahn. He has a big body, moves well and has good hands. This is a fun team to watch.
- Lincoln Memorial is rolling..... The Railsplitters are now 14-1 and have been dominant. Going back to last season, they have now won a remarkable 46 of their last 47 games. Since their only loss during this streak (to Lenoir-Rhyne, 89-83 on January 9), the Railsplitters have won 7 straight, and won by scores of 100-76, 111-72, 92-66, 117-64, 102-71, 70-59 and 108-79.
- Northern State is now 10-0 and has set a new school record with 19 consecutive wins. Parker Fox is the headliner, and he is crazy-athletic and has a great motor and plays really hard on both ends of the floor. Thus far this season, Fox is averaging 21.1 ppg, 10 rpg, 2.8 bpg, 2.2 apg & 2.2 spg, while shooting over 65% fg.
- Indiana Wesleyan is just a joy to watch. They are so well-coached, they play so hard and they share the ball so well. You can see their genuine joy when their teammates succeed. The Wildcats are 24-1 and ranked #1 in the NAIA. They have defeated 6 Top 25 teams and have won 46 consecutive home games. The Wildcats are winning by 23.6 ppg & they just netted their 11th 100-point game of the season, a new school record

— are the 20s cursed?
This year began with memes of World War III and the plagues of the 20s, only one of those seems to be a joke though. For a few centuries now, … [The Oredigger]
DURING SELF-ISOLATION I HAVE A lot of free time, and during this free time I realised something: the 20s are cursed.
The 20s for the last five centuries seem to have started with an outbreak or a plaque.
1620s: unknown disease in colonised america & bubonic plague in italy The furthest back an outbreak plagued the second decade was during the 1620s (The Oredigger, 2020).
A series of plague had struck the southeastern coast of the present-day United States, leaving many Native Americans dead. However, as this outbreak was not well-documented, the disease that caused the deaths is unknown, although smallpox and yellow fever has been suggested (The Oredigger, 2020).
In the same decade, an outbreak of the bubonic plague swept Italy, killing around 300,000 (The Oredigger, 2020).
1720s: the great plague of marseille In Marseille, France, a plague struck the city in 1720. Similarly to that of the Black Death, it spread through fleas and contact with infected victims. Victims developed painful swellings forming bombs, located in the groin, armpit and neck area. As the victim’s state worsened, symptoms included painful muscle cramps, gangrene, bloody vomiting, coma, and finally, death (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
Again, similarly to the Black Death, the disease arrived in Marseille via ship in May 1720. The ship had arrived from the Levantine coast with a carbo full of silk fabrics and cotton. The outbreak was slow, first showing up around the beginning of July when two women in the city died after displaying symptoms of the plague. Later, doctors attended a gravely ill eight-year-old boy. The boy was diagnosed with the plague, and the doctors alerted a city alderman who quickly spread the word to the rest of the city. Around two months later, every district in Marseille was affected (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
Hospitals quickly became overwhelmed and infirmaries ran out of room to hold the dead. Bodies were tossed out on the streets, worsening the situation. They tried in a futile attempt to throw the dead bodies into mass graves filled with quicklime (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
At one point the situation turned so dire the provincial court of the nearby city of Aix passed legislation making any communication with anyone from Marseille punishable by death (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
By the autumn of 1721, the plague started to loosen its grip on Marseille because of the colder weather. By winter, “only” one person per day died from the plague. The plague, however, returned in the spring of 1722, causing panic and more deaths (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
As a whole, it took twenty-six months for the plague to run its course and by the end of it, an estimated 100,000 men, women, and children had succumbed to the disease (Europe Between East And West, 2017).
1820s: the cholera pandemic In September 1817, the first of several cholera pandemics would outbreak in Asia. It began near the city of Calcutta, located in what was then down as British India. The next year the disease was found in Bombay. Then it spread quickly to other parts of Asia, by March 1820 it had reached Siam (now known as Thailand), in spring of 1821 Java, Oman and China, in 1822 Japan, Baghdad, Syria, and by 1823 Russia (Wikipedia).
Then, in 1824, it suddenly stopped. It is not entirely known why the disease suddenly stopped spreading, although some researchers believe this was due to the cold winters of 1823--1824. Bacteria in the water supplies would later be found out as the cause of the outbreaks, and the cold, harsh weather would have killed the bacteria which stopped the spreading of cholera (Wikipedia).
As for the cause of the quick spreading of the disease, the British Army and Navy personnel are believed to have contributed. The British troops carried it overland to Nepal and Afghanistan, and the Navy ships carried infected people to the shores of the Indian Ocean, from Africa to Indonesia, China and Japan (Wikipedia).
The total deaths from this pandemic are unknown. It has been estimated that in Bangkok 30,000 people died and in British India, around 1–2 million died (Wikipedia). 1920s: the spanish flu pandemic The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls the 1918 flu pandemic, more commonly known as the Spanish Flu, “the most severe pandemic in recent history,” and for good reason. Though mortality was high in any age group—people younger than five, twenty to forty and older than sixty-five—, what was unique to the pandemic was that even a healthy person could succumb to the disease.
In the spring of 1918, the first wave of the flu occurred and the sick got symptoms like chills, fever and fatigue, but they usually recovered. The number of deaths was low. However, in the autumn the same year, it came back with a vengeance. A victim died within hours of developing symptoms, skin turned blue and lungs filled with fluid suffocating them (History, 2010).
The Spanish Flu was caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, but it is not entirely known where this particular flu originated. English virologist John Oxford theorised that the United Kingdom troop staging and hospital camp in Étaples, France was the source of the pandemic (Wikipedia). The United States has also been theorised as pandemic’s origin, where the first case was reported in Fort Riley, Kansas in March 1918 (History, 2010).
When the Spanish Flu came to the United States, scientists and doctors were not sure what caused it and how to treat it. There was no vaccine or antivirals to combat the virus. This was also during the First World War, so there was a shortage of physicians and other health workers available in the U.S. mainland, as many had been sent to Europe (History, 2010).
Hospitals were overloaded with patients that schools, private homes and other buildings had to be made into makeshift hospitals. Some community officials imposed quarantine, told people to wear masks and shut down public spaces (schools, churches, etc.), people were advised to stay indoors (History, 2010).
In the summer of 1919, in the United States, the flu started to come to an end. The Spanish flu took a heavy toll on society. Husbands lost their wives, parents lost their children, funeral parlours were overwhelmed and many families retorted to digging graves for their dead family members. The economy was affected, businesses were forced to shut down, and basic services, like mail delivery, were hindered as many of the workers were struck with the flu (History, 2010).
The Spanish Flu infected around 500 million people worldwide and killed anywhere from 17 million to 50 million people, becoming one of the deadliest pandemics in human history (Wikipedia).
