Pomctober Day 6: Opposite Au

Oh Opposite Au, the very first AU I ever stumbled across. On my first Digital Circus doodle page I actually drew Opposite Gangle and Jax! I always found that AU very charming (even though it took me forever to find the creator at the time... damn reddit post).

I still think the AU has a lot of cool ideas! Even though Campbell is on instagram I hope they see the amount of fanart they've received on their Pomni recently so they are at least aware people still love their au. :]

I'm thinking about the absurdity of everything that happened to the Mighty Nein when they finally make it to Rosohna.

Like, imagine being the Essek for that.

Here's a group of adventurers. They have a surprising number of humans in their midst. That's a little suspicious considering the war with the Empire. After a few questions, they appear to be the world's most obvious and transparent spies. Like... Come on, they don't even really seem to know the region.

Well, whatever, guess they're gonna be treated appropriately-

Oh, that's a beacon. In a moment of stress, they proceed to pull out the most valuable relic of your people, which was stolen, or lost, and just... hand it back over to you.

You (as Essek), know about 95% of how they got their hands on it, because you've been keeping tabs on it because you're the one who handed it over in the first place. And here it is. In the throne room. They have no idea what it is, but they know the Bright Queen wants it, and they seem to earnestly want to make friends, and really would just like one of their members to get her husband back.

And the whole thing gets even stupider because you (that is to say Essek), decide that your best chance of keeping everything secure is to be the one who keeps an eye on them, and these dumbasses categorically refuse to stop trying to befriend you. You are specifically, actively trying to stop them from getting you caught and executed for treason, and they're like 'hey, you want to come over for dinner or something? We have a hot tub.'

Ok so thoughts about Fear Entity alignments for Deltarune characters!

Kris, to me, was one of the more obvious. Being the only human in town makes them a very distinct other from everyone around them, despite their attempts to blend in with their family. They’re also regularly referred to as creepy and “the class zombie” by their peers. All very Stranger-esque. They are also very clearly a victim of The Web via the Soul/Player, that’s just a no-brainer.

Susie is another easy one, she’s a Slaughter avatar if I’ve ever seen one. She lashes out with violence at the slightest hint of adversity, and only decided that non-violent solutions could sometimes be of use after almost killing one of her first real friends. And even after that she’s still always ready to bash skulls at any time.

Ralsei was an interesting one. His alignment doesn’t actually have much to do with his own fear, nor any fear he inflicts on others. But instead is a reflection of Darkners as a whole. All Darkners, as beings essentially born from darkness, are Dark aligned by default. As the Prince of the Dark, Ralsei embodies this.

Berdly as a Vast avatar is perhaps a bit more of a reach than the others, and it could be argued that he’s just as much a victim as he is an avatar. For me it comes in two parts. The first and simpler is that he’s a bird. Birds fly in the sky. The Vast deals with sky based stuff. The second is the more existential part of The Vast. Berdly struggles with being seen as unintelligent, unexceptional, insignificant. And the way he deals with this Fear is to project it onto others, belittling them and making them feel insignificant in comparison to him.

Noelle’s alignment changes based on the route. In the regular route she’s a shoo-in for The Lonely, being a quiet doormat who bends to others wills without actually being an active member. In the Snowgrave route, she fills the role of Desolation avatar quite nicely, destroying everything in her path, leaving nothing untouched by her ice. (She’s also clearly a victim of The Web in both routes, by Queen and Kris/the Soul respectively.)

Jevil is another simple one, what with the themes of chaos, madness, and unreality. Spiral avatar all the way.

Jesters and Butlers fill the same ecological niche of checking the nobility, they just use different methods to achieve it

taliesin and laura remain truly so fantastic at making characters who… don’t necessarily have something extremely and inherently in common but do have experiences that were caused by similar sources and that lead them to have quite different opinions/ideas about things but in ways that are typically very reconcilable? which is a lot of qualifiers but it’s a through line of vex/percy with nobility, jester & cad with loneliness (and also god stuff but in a different post maybe someday i’ll talk about how actually their god stuff is intensely related to their different experiences of loneliness), and now imogen & ashton with being left behind.

like vex was this character who technically had a claim to nobility due to her blood but at the same time was burdened because of that same claim. and percy who was born into and raised by nobility but that nobility ended up making his family the targets of a massacre. and then vex who lets down her walls and Do I Look Like I Come From Money? and percy giving her the title grand mistress of the grey hunt because it has nothing to do with blood, or his love for her, or anything aside from the fact that it’s something she can prove herself worthy of simply by virtue of who she Is, not who someone makes her. and percy and vex’s conversation about forgiveness and it’s necessity for growth as probably two of the characters most inclined to hold grudges.

and caduceus clay who gets left behind with nothing but his Belief while his family goes off into the world. and jester lavorre who gets shut inside with no company except her Belief as her mother protects her from the world. and they both get the burden of loneliness and the understanding of love’s nonmalicious imperfection. and caduceus having a panic attack on a ship and jester telling him that the world is a lot bigger than his cemetery and that means he has to break out of his comfort zone to find his path. and caduceus telling jester that he doesn’t think she gets as much credit as she ought to and she deserves more pastries. and jester thanking caduceus for showing her how cool it is to actually heal people and caduceus asking if she wants to use his shield while he doesn’t need it.

and ashton who was left broken and dying on the ground and was given inescapable pain as their means of survival. and imogen who was left behind by the only person who could provide true understanding of the pain she’d one day come to feel. and ashton who’s a barbarian, who wields their rage casually and unapologetically and who sees the Shittiness of the world but is unrelenting in his version of optimism. and imogen who is weighed down by pessimism she doesn’t Want to have but hasn’t cracked how to undo and who doesn’t admit her anger until it comes up again and again and again and carries it like a burden or like guilt, who we only see really Grasp and feel Confidence about her anger being something good in front of others when she has those conversations with ashton. and like. ashton who looks at imogen and sees a superhero. imogen venturing through ashton’s mind and holding his bleeding and exhausted head and saying i’m sorry. i’m sorry. and imogen who looks at ashton and sees someone special. and fucking “we got him killed.” and “no, we didn’t. don’t you dare. […] we are not what fucking killed that man. […] we are his eventual victory. we are his fucking revenge.” and “i’ll be his revenge.” and “i have no fucking doubt.”

and in general rp wise they both tend to make some of my favourite characters (also typically the ones i find most frustrating) because they both tend to make flaws that are easy to hate and they make those flaws very central to their characters but i think that’s also what makes their character interactions so deeply compelling because so frequently it’s like. yes yes these two characters have like. a helix of things they have in common but also things they deeply disagree on but they’re going to spider-man point at the things that are the same and they’re going to honour their differences while doing so. and it’s just. i always enjoy it so much and i was psyched when i heard about an imogen and ashton side pit stop in last nights episode and i was not let down when i watched the episode today.

We're on missy2 emotions lockdown today. The way he literally is a clow- like. He's Actually relying on humor to get attention so much, at least when it's just him & the doctor- it's one of those, like. Builds personality around aiming for either Negative Attention or Amusement Factor, cuz it's - it's not really "what else he has to offer" he's still the Master on some levels. Even with the self loathing He thinks he's objecitvely Fucking Incredible. It's just that he doesn't quite understand what is it the Doctor wants- of life, of him- and he loathes quite a few of the bits he does understand or has misconstrued- so like. Negative Attention or Le Funny is what he can give her!* That's the best she gonna get! Sooooo- this is him trying to make it work!!!

But yeah reading my own wips, the fact he Has to tell a joke at least once a minute like clockwork and immediately rate her response one to ten and then spend the next half of the minute internally going NOT that i NEED her attention. Obviously. Whocaresss. If she doesn't react in the exact way i want soon i can just kill her, right. Righ- oh it's Joke time. I can't believe she didn't notice how badly she was setting that one up. Idiot 😊 ooh she laughed at this oneeee. Wah wah wah 😊 . 👁👁Why's she having fun. Too much fun. I'll fuckin kill her. (<- GOT HIS EGO THREATENED BY HIS OWN CHOSEN FACADE) It's so unwelllllll
