I don't think people understand what Tartarus means. It's the demigod equivalent of what we might call Zombie apocalypse. Everything goes in the name of survival. Tartarus has its own rules. Holding to naive reservations about certain morality or ethics will get you killed. Not to mention not only was Percy defending himself, he was also responsible for keeping Annabeth safe and they had a job to get done, i.e closing the doors of death from the inside.He had to ensure it done, even if neither of them lived. Percy just found the best option possible to circumvent that, and no one has the right to complain because, well, he is the reason YOUR FAVORITES ARE ALIVE, ANNABETH IS ALIVE. She was injured, couldn't fight, didn't have powers, and usually, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. BUT TARTARUS IS THE ONE PLACE WHERE YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED POWERS.

Also, PERCY WAS READY TO DIE. TO REMAIN ALONE IN TARTARUS. That's how selfless he is. He jumped in after Annabeth as he would have for anyone else in the seven as well. He could have chosen not to, but he took responsibility and carried it through and got them both alive. If anyone else had done that, you would call them strategic and clever and necessary. I bet if Jason had done something like that, everyone would be praising his military training, highlighting how he was able to make the hard choices, unlike Percy. If Nico had done it, everyone would have praised his power and how he was right to use it.

Well, it doesn't matter. Because they would have all been right. I DON'T THINK SOME OF THE READERS UNDERSTOOD THE CONCEPT OF TARTARUS. If Percy couldn't do half the things he could, they would have died. And so would everyone else. He did what he had to, needed to. It's like blaming someone for SELF-DEFENCE.

For example when Annabeth set Percy up to be beaten up or potentially fatally injured by the Ares kids, she was wise and strategic to set a young, inexperienced and clueless Percy to almost die because she had her "guess". That's not toxic or manipulative, eh?

Or when the rest of the Seven except Hazel, Percy, and Frank voted to let Nico die because they were suspicious of him? That was for Greater Good, right? Definitely not toxic.

There are so many other instances of different characters being toxic, and everyone knows it. But to hide that they demean other characters and it's mostly Percy because why not? The one character where there are no faults to pick at.

so a long time ago i found this funny website about the types of mary sues, and here are the ones i feel like piper fits the bill for:

-> not just about piper's issues with her dad and being rich, but her whole thing with jason, which is ESPECIALLY prevalent in toa, where she bemoans about how hera and aphrodite FORCED her into a relationship with jason, when that was not the case at all. throughout all of hoo, we read about piper going through with the false memories even after being told that they were fake memories conjured by the mist, wishing that jason doesn't remember his past so he would stay with her, getting jealous over reyna, getting upset whenever jason thinks about anything related to camp jupiter, etc.

but rick was getting a lot of backlash over jasper/jiper, so he breaks them up in toa, but does it in a way to make PIPER look like the victim instead because, again, he really likes her and wants ppl to sympathize with her

Good that you’ve added your points because that essentially brings down my issues with this whole spiel. I guess I’m going to play the other card. My main issues with this whole thing are:

A) the fandom sexualizing kids

B) people not understanding that looks/behavior in or outside of a (romantic) relationship don’t necessarily have to correlate with sexual behavior, especially when powerplay is involved

Of course Percy is easier to grasp for us. We have five whole books where we hear his every thought, follow his every move and think we get to know him (that automatically makes Percy not a reliable narrator, just saying).

For every book quote that puts Percy into the „Dom“ slot, there’s also a book quote that would be fitting for Annabeth (the dance from TTC comes to my mind). I can see both going either way. Despite them having mostly different personalities (Percy internalizing his thoughts and motives, whereas Annabeth is doing rather the opposite), they are very similar when it comes to leadership and end goals. Annabeth can range from emotional to bossy in a similar way Percy does. They just express themselves on different levels and get seen by outsiders in different ways.

Did you catch that? Did you see the hypocrisy that I just committed? We are using book quotes to justify placing characters that are in that context and in overall canon minors/teens/essentially fucking children in sexualized categories. Tbh, as much flag as you can give Riordan, I can’t blame him for blocking people who do this. Not every author is a fan of fanfiction and fan theory and what not.

People throwing these BSDM terms around without a second thought makes me cringe (tbh, I’m too lazy to explain the psychology of power play and kinks in that regard, just know that the instigator is not automatically the top/dom and there are many, many, many layers in a pp relationship). You cannot base sexual behavior from the canon itself. We know nothing about Percy and Annabeth in that regard to even justify the slightest. Ripping actions out of context to give them a label doesn’t work like that so easily unfortunately.

The only way to settle this question for once and all would be by simply doing this:

The super power part is essentially the only thing that’s keeping him alive), you give him a kiss because you’re too shy to admit your feelings for him and he’s being an awkward cheeky bastard before looking for a fight and then some adult asshole has the caucasity of calling you a bratty sub. People using canon to justify their headcanons is simply something I can’t get behind in this matter. The main issues is that they are children/teens/minors in canon. There is no way around it. Trying to justify/back up some of your thoughts in that regard with actual quotes only makes it worse because you aren’t only sexualizing them in your fanon, but you are also automatically transferring these thoughts to the actual books and thus fore sexualizing them in canon. You’re changing the basis and narrative.

I honestly don’t get the obsession that some have with their teenage sex life? This isn’t a personal attack on people but I’ve seen this throughout several group chats and social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, Pinterest even and of course Tumblr. And popular stuff like Riverdale, Euphoria, 13 Reasons Why and New Adult Twilight rip-offs á la Shades of Grey and that Harry Styles fanfic honestly don’t help with the portrayal of „curious“ teens.

This also isn’t a strict PJO phenomenon, it happens across all fandoms. The odd trend with sexualizing kids/teens or things intended for kids has been going on for ages. I get it, you grow out of the related audience but that doesn’t justify the means? Canon won’t change simply because you do.

Percy and Annabeth are awkward teens that have never dated anyone else and had barely half a year between pjo and hoo before getting caught up in another mess. I’m not saying that teens aren’t curious and don’t experiment, some do drugs and/or have sex (let’s be real the probability of something happening in the stable scene in MOA is very high) but still? Putting dom/sub labels on them is sketchyyy. Also throw your fucking sex god headcanons out of the motherfucking window. They are 17-ish, if you need the mental image of some weird kids flopping on top of each other for two whole minutes for some odd reason, good for you but I’m side eying the fuck outta you.

You can’t really blame Riordan for not being more explicit. A) the series is for middle schoolers (aka kids), so it’s not strictly Young Adult and there’s only so much you can do B) publishers/editors interfering is a thing (especially with society’s views of sex = bad and violence = just fine) and c) the probability of sexualizing the characters of his own creation in that sense might have made him uncomfortable. Better to play safe, than end up with a bigger mess, just saying. I’m all for the sex talk in a non-berating, (slightly) educational approach when it comes to that in non-adult literature. Or even just stating a sex scene in a mere sentence. (Karen M. McManus did an amazing job with portraying struggling teens with a right approach in One of Us is Lying. Stating it or making it very, very, very clear between the lines. Then again, not everyone can pull that off or wants to go in that direction).

In addition to that, seeing stuff like the infamous ”the sea doesn’t like to be restrained“ or ”Percy has handsome features which shifted from humor to anger“ quotes getting constantly shredded is so… Meh. One simple question: what does Percy having a mean resting bitch face to do with his sexuality/sexual behavior? What does him being annoyed and on the moodier side have to do with it? For me absolutely nothing. The correlation isn’t really clear and out there. Pissed Percy doesn’t translate into Percy automatically being the dominant (in Percabeth’s sex life)?

I mean I get it. We all grow up. Erotica is a wonderful genre and art form (if you waddle through the trash). You will never be able to get that out of fiction and fanfiction. That’s also neither my goal nor my place to decide. As cheap and stupid as it is, I’d rather have people intentionally aging the characters up and stating their headcanons in that regard rather than people attempting to abuse canon where the characters are minors in order for sexualizing them. There’s no good way to prevent this from happening unfortunately (unless you really want to abolish all explicit fanon stuff).

Whenever you post a sexy headcanon just hold on for a second. If you have abstract future headcanons sure, go ahead, personally don’t see a problem with that. But if you use source material to fixate your thoughts on minors in canon to give them sexual labels… I urge you to seriously rethink that.

I don’t.  Know.  Tbh.  I honestly haven’t been okay for a very, very long time.  I have really bad, occasionally crippling OCD that I am trying to parse through and cope with now that I know I have it (and that it’s bad--you should have seen the look on the therapist’s face during that one and only appointment, it took her like three seconds), which feeds into my anxiety, which feeds into depression.  The only reason I’m not suicidal is, somewhat hilariously, my anxiety, because even though I am utterly convinced that everyone around me would be happier if I was gone and/or wouldn’t miss me (esp since I now know both my sisters, but especially my youngest sister, resent the shit out of me for a variety of reasons, but jealousy and my absence for my studies and “being smart”/my academic accomplishments apparently being three of them, as relayed to me by outside sources and they themselves), my crippling fear of death stops me from actually doing anything about it.

I just.  Feel like I’m constantly reaching out for help and trying to extend olive branches and they are being violently rejected or ignored.  And that isn’t in my head, either.  I was told by my dad that I’m “trying too hard” to fix the relationship between my sisters and I (it’s two against one, and I am the one) while they aren’t trying at all and it sucks.  I feel incredibly alone and like whatever I do is never good enough or is bad, and I’m tired of constantly being rejected by people around me.  I lost my oldest friend of 20+ years because she was mad that I didn’t grovel at her feet for something I didn’t do.  I was chased out of something I loved because someone resented the fact that I was popular for the first and only time in my life and spread rumours and lies that resulted in someone trying to kill themselves, and everyone (including the person who tried to commit suicide) blame me, and then when I didn’t immediately accept their half-hearted apology (which wasn’t so much an apology for what they did so much as it was an “I’m sorry you’re upset about it”).  I used to write all the time an dinteract with people but I burned out so bad after my thesis that I had to take a hiatus and since them I’ve basically gotten no response to anything no matter how hard to try to engage people.

I feel like all I do is hang on, and in some ways things have gotten better (at the very least I am in charge of my body now, and am physically fit and am no longer in constant, agonizing physical pain due to obesity--I can control my body and that’s something), but I just.  The common denominator here is me.  What’s so bad about me that literally my existence just causes people to hate the shit out of me?  And that isn’t even in my head, either--I have a long track record of people I don’t even know, and who I’ve never even really interacted with, hating the shit out of me to the point where they’ve done everything they could to try and drag me down.  And even my family resents my successes.

I want to succeed to make them proud and to make myself proud, not to make them hate me.  I’m proud of their successes and talents and I support my sisters in everything they do.  My youngest sister is a phenomenal dancer, way better than I could ever be, and I go to everything I can and support her.  I support them both.  But they just resent my successes.  My youngest sister can dance better than me, but she hates me because I can sing bettter.  She wants to be a nurse, but she hates me because I’m in law school.  She’s tired of hearing about my successes, but my parents have always praised our successes equally because they understand that we all have different stengths--I’ve certainly heard for years about how smart they are.  My other sister is charismatic and beautiful and makes friends far quicker than I.  Everyone loves her and I am an awkward social potato (my dad describes me  to other people who haven’t met me as “so smart she’s weird”, so I’m basically a sitcom character at this point).

And this isn’t in my head.  It was told to me quite bluntly by multiple people over Christmas who observed how my sisters were actively shutting me out and how upset I was about it.  So the fact that they’re actively excluding me and ganging up on me isn’t even in my head.  I wish it was.

And this all sounds really stupid and whingy now that I’ve typed it out so I’m going to stop but I just.  I feel alone and stupid and like.  Obviously if so many people resent me then the common denominator is me.  I must fuckinng suck as a person, and that’s why I’m alone and will forever be alone, because the only people who can stand to be around me are my parents.  No wonder my favourite HP character and the only character I’ve ever related to on a personal level is Percy fucking Weasley.

My ship

Oh gods I'm so up set with the loss of my widowmauk ship. I adore talisin when his characters fall for another character. The amount of beauty that comes from those ships is each unique in it's own way and I feel cheated that Caleb and Molly couldn't get thier chance.

Percy came with his own unique style of trying to ignore one's feelings and when that fails at least keep it hidden. I mean everyone in vox machina at some point made a pass at him and his self hatered only made him even more precious in his attempts to save others from the curse he thought he was.

Molly on the other hand was just wild. He had no care for proper or how he should act and I feel (or at least I hope) that he was slowly crawling under everyone's defences. With jester he was the mischievous older brother that helped with pranks. To fjord he was the person that continuously hit on him to see the reaction even though both ppl knew it would never happen. To beau he is the person she had a fake hate relationship with. They both like each other but she feels he is too poser like while he is just trying to remove the stick he thinks is ramed up her ass from her deliberate acts of rebellion. To yasha he is a part of a past home and the first look into what could be in this world. To Nott he is someone that can know all that she is but still won't throw things at her. And to Caleb he could have been hope.

Caleb is so far into his self hatered. Caleb blames himself for not being strong enough to resist the magic, or smart enough to find the lies after. He hates himself for what he did but he doesn't want to and Molly was that ball of hope that maybe Caleb could learn to forgive himself. This flamboyand rainbow like creature that stole a freashly dead body and called it home. He is not ashamed of the mistakes of his past and maybe that is because he doesn't remember them but still. Molly seemed like he had a thing for Caleb and the beauty of that relationship is what will haunt my dreams.

Molly was just bumblefucking his way through life and in his bumbleing he stumbled across this magic man who is psychologically screwed over. Molly is the person to leave money all over for ppl to stumble across so if you think he is not going to try to help this trash man you are wrong. I have no doubt that after scratching the surface he began to fall and the beauty of what could have been of their relationship would be Molly helping Caleb while also trying to convince him to take a chance on him.

they would be put off by how the pjo gods behave, especially towards humans. because yeah the pjo gods see humans as inferior, but a lot of them DO actually like humans and some even fall in love and have children (demigods) with them. a lot of them see humans as inferior, but they still like them so seeing how much the ror gods hate them to the point of multiple genocides and then eventually wanting to wipe ALL of them out puts them off. they'd be like "holy shit, you guys need to calm down wtf is wrong with you people"

cuz sure they may have been fucked up back in ancient times, but they clearly mellowed out, meanwhile the ror gods only got crueler over time 💀

Especially in the premise of your fic, where, if the tags are anything to go by, the female girlflop mc will lose everything she holds dear including her mental stability and bodily autonomy to five or more overpowered MEN (granted they are gods, but still men.)

The main difference between her and OG!Percy, who got both the love of his life Annabeth and a pretty set future at New Rome College? Their gender.

Just to explain, I for one fully, or at least mostly understood what I was getting into when I began reading Arsenic Blues. I saw the Dead Dove tag, and know how to differentiate reality from fiction.

However, there’s a possibility that some loud mouthed single braincelled men out there (or women with internalized misogyny) that considers a fem!Percy with practically the same strength, abilities, and personality, too pretentious or something, began reading your fic after seeing the tags to get off on fem!Percy being non con fucked out of her mind, traumatized, and knocked down a peg or billion, reduced to a mere common victim of the gods, because they don’t like the concept of a strong fem!Percy. Cuz surely a loser coded girl saving Olympus is just a fluke and she needs to be put in her place by capable men😒

no normal person is gonna read my fic (or any book like this in general tbh) and suddenly think "omg.... girls are inferior to men! this book told me so and i'm gonna take it as fact!". if someone does think that, then they already had issues to begin with way before they started reading. my fic did not give them those issues.

normal ppl don't let themselves get influenced by a book in such a way because they've already gotten a solidified sense of right or wrong and they should already know "yeah the stuff happening to this MC is bad and not at all their fault. anyway! time to enjoy more of their suffering 🤪".

UNLESS ofc, they don't have a fully solidified sense of right or wrong, meaning they're just way too young to be reading my fic (or books like it). even then, not really my fault because i already gave out the warnings and even ao3 gives an additional "are you sure you wanna read this?" page. people can't control who reads the fics/books, they can just give out warnings

also, about the og male!percy vs my fem!percy thing, i can easily just write fanfic about og!percy going through the same thing. then what are they gonna say? in fact, there already ARE some juicy dark fics about poor og percy, savior of olympus, being reduced to just another victim of the gods (there's actually a lot more dark fics of og!percy going through traumatizing shit then there are fem!percy ones hehe 😍)
