PSA To My Hero Academia fans on RedNote/ Xiaohongshu!
I've seen a lot of people going to Xiaohongshu! That's great! However I think this is something you should know (;´∀`)･･ｧﾊﾊﾊ･･
My Hero Academia is the only anime that is a major taboo! As a long term MHA fan it saddens me greatly - but it offends the Chinese people so don't post anything My Hero Academia related!
They're very lenient with foreigners fortunately, but there have been cases of death threats and harassment to a couple MHA posters. It's essentially banned/blacklisted (socially at least)
I've seen people asking, but so far it's an MHA only type thing - no other anime (to my knowledge) has this type of resentment.
It's not an"oh this anime is cringy" type hate. It's a deep seated resentment - because of Dr. Garaki.
So for those that don't know, way back in late 2019/early 2020, there was this whole catastrophe regarding Horikoshi-sensei's naming of him. His original name was "Maruta Shiga". Many saw this as an ode to the WWII experimentation on Chinese citizens by the imperialist Japanese army and unit 731, and seeing that he's a doctor who experiments on people (to make Nomu)... This wasn't taken well
The Chinese saw it as him pretty much spitting on their history, and saw it as a mockery of their patriotism. Therefore, My Hero Academia as a whole is extraordinarily offensive on any Chinese platform in general
However this was entirely a mistake on Horikoshi's side. As we all know, he likes to have fun with his names and names his characters by appearance, power, or behavior. "Maruta" was meant to portray the Doctor's roundness (as Horikoshi said, "he's a short, portly man"), but it was also the Japanese word for "log" - which many saw as a reference to Unit 731 (many many trigger warnings for those who look into that. It's horrific). "Shiga" was chosen simply because it was similar to Shigaraki's name. It was an unfortunate combination.
Horikoshi didn't intend for it to be such an insensitive reference and immediately changed the doctor's name to Garaki within a week on all digital copies. He's apologized as well, but still to this day My Hero is a big taboo (｡•́︿•̀｡)
I'm very sorry to my My Hero Academia friends! But I ask of you to keep it invisible on Chinese platforms like Xiaohongshu - just save it for other places like here, okay?

#zeb wells#spiderman#the amazing spiderman#like not only is this an insult to the kid who collects spiderman#but its also one to an issue where spiderman is with another kid with lekumia#as hes playing spiderman with the kid as it was the kids wish#but when playtime is over and the hospital and parents say its time to go to bed#the kid refuses and spiderman learns its because the kid is afraid he wont wake up#causing spiderman to ask if the kid has a coat and we see why as he takes the kid for a swing across the city#giving the kid more time of being like spiderman#then there's the time he visited a wounded kid in hospital who is also a spidey fan and looked up to spiderman#and said kid figures out his identity and the two talk before sadly the kid has a caradiac rest and peter goes to his funeral#where his parents ask peter to give the kids home-made comics to spiderman and peter promises#let alone the comic leah where he finds a homeless girl also a fan dying and does try to save her via getting her to the hospital#but its sadly too late as the doctors cant do anything#meaning all spiderman can do is lift his mask a little and give her a forehead kiss#and wish her sweet dreams as we see her in dreams with all the heroes she admires#like long tags here but thats how much this 'joke' angers me#let alone even if you removed all of peters history WHY THE HELL IS THIS A 'JOKE' SOMEONE LET PASS-#no character should be doing that wtf

Still thinking about how someone at the party I was at last night mentioned Always Sunny in a conversation with someone else on the other side of the room and I was suddenly Activated.
Had a lovely time trying not to be too weird, but also definitely being weird and getting to explain the insane context for some of the stuff on the show to @pog-mo-bhlog, then realised that I had apparently got so excited that I was no longer overstimulated, as I had taken my headphones off and didn't need them for the rest of the night.
It's like a special autism bonus. Activate my special interest and I will successfully cope with an overstimulating environment.
Of course, I did then go home and watch some Sunny.

unpopular opinion but actually i love when heroes refuse to kill their enemies and no one is gonna make me not love it
#personal crap#i think it makes writers have to be more creative about how they solve problems#plus it allows you to play with the morality of killing and what ways to fight are ok#(doctor who and su do that a lot obviously and imho it slaps idc what anyone else says)#and have stone cold badass moments of like emotional superiority (vash from trigun does that a fair bit#and my favourite recent example is how in gotg 3 rocket refuses to kill the high evolutionary bc he knows he's already won#and doesn't want to do to him what he did to lylla teefs and floor)#when heroes do just kill their enemies in cold blood it feels kinda boneheaded to me by comparison#not to mention a lot of purity culture weirdos loooove when villains are just one-dimensional evil dicks who have to be destroyed#bc that plays really nicely into their morality#oh and i just thought of another one: in rotj luke refusing to kill palpatine to take his place is so cool#especially in contrast to how in tros rey just kills him like it's nothing even though they spent the whole trilogy#building up the idea her allegiance to the light side of the force isn't as strong as most jedi#only to go 'nah if you kill palpatine everything's good'

I'm honestly not quite sure how to feel about the new Doctor Who season.
It is waaaay too high budget. The stories are just as weird and unhinged as ever. It feels like it has something to say. The marketing is trying to sell it as this new era. It really is not. It feels like there was a major break somewhere. The exact same people are working on it as they did over a decade ago. It feels like they have something to say. The Doctor is Black now and the show is more outspoken queer / queer friendly. It feels like Chibnall's era had more people of color in it. It is using the same stupid tired tropes as it has for almost twenty years now. I just want to go back to exploring alien planets that all look like the British countryside. The Doctor keeps reminding us of how incredibly special he is even among Time Lords and Ruby is A Mystery To Solve. On one hand it has an outspoken pro-adoption and chosen family message, on the other Ruby's birth mother is going to be Important™. I just want them to have fun adventures in a quarry.
And none of this matters, because you could find this kind of joy and whimsy only in Doctor Who and Legends of Tomorrow, and Legends got cancelled for being too queer.
