This film has such an awesome aesthetic. It’s like Frank Tashlin-esque 1950s/60s cartoonish brightness but combined with Jerry’s own unique darkness and creepiness. The colour of the chemicals, the Purple Pit, the nightmarish transformation, Buddy Love’s suits, it all is so visually unique.

Jerry Lewis letter to actress Stella Stevens while working on The nutty professor (November 7, 1962)
Dear Stella:
This note comes in the form of respect and appreciation, for not only your fantastic ability and know-how, but for your untiring efforts and hard-work.
I was completly inspired last night. I suspect this was because I have never worked with anyone quite like you before. Your energy and listening power is beyond anything I have ever know.
You are the reason men can't live without the pride and thrill of direction. I only wish I could explain simply how wonderful you are to work with. Perhaps one day you will know the feeling. If you don't then you're missing one of the greatest thrills of creativity.
This note has been long overdue, but I have been so busy I haven't had a minute to sit down and peck it ou myself. This is not the kind of letter I would want to dictate.
I could say much more about how wonderful a performer and actress you are, but i'm sure all my words are, at this point, nothing more than redundancy.
Again, thank you for the rare privilege of being a small part of what I know will be one of the most exciting rockets to ever hit the star cluster.
Believe me to be sincere, and very proud to be working with you.
Always and affectionately,
Jerry

The original 'The Nutty Professor' – Dr. Jekyll and Jerry Lewis on Amazon Prime and Paramount+
The original ‘The Nutty Professor’ – Dr. Jekyll and Jerry Lewis on Amazon Prime and Paramount+
Jerry Lewis cowrites, produces, directs, and stars in The Nutty Professor (1963), a bizarro take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that reimagines the good doctor as nerdy college chemistry professor Julius Kelp. Lewis plays him as a buck-toothed social misfit with an adenoidal voice and a spasmodic, childlike body slumped into a walking shrug. When this Dr. Jekyll reaches deep inside to release his…

Professor Kelp / Buddy Love's "Object of Desire" is a blonde girl with blue eyes. In the film and in the advertising photos Stella Purdy (the character) is holding a tennis racket. Jeanne, Dean Martin's wife, was blonde with light eyes. Dean Paul Martin, the son, was blond with light eyes. And the year before the movie The Nutty Professor, that is, in 1962, at the age of 11, he had started playing tennis. Just coincidences?
