On "upscaling" of covers ie why are we so boring now?
So, my recent desire to reread some Robin Hood retellings I used to love led me to Jennifer Roberson's Lady of the Forest. Roberson wrote a LOT of fantasy (Tiger and Del series is amazing) but she also wrote period novels now and then, and LotF is a historical take on the Robin Hood legend with focus on Marian.
I adored that novel back when I first read it many years ago and every time I've reread it since. My paperback copy is somewhere it's a pain to get to and is probably falling apart, so I went on amazon to get a kindle edition. It's there, I own it, yay but it also made me discover the new cover for it.
This is the original cover. This is the edition I first read as a young Mousie back in the 1990s:
And this is the current cover:
Notice the difference?
The first cover would definitely make me pause and check the book out a bit in a book store. It has a gorgeous old tale vibe that actually does convey a lot - it's heavy on romance (which it is), it has our protagonists (no wonder it's one of my favorite versions - I am a total sucker for blond with PTSD MLs.) The new cover is so depersonalized and generic I'd never pause twice.
This cover, like so many others, has gone respectable. No pretty people (no people at all), no romance no nothing. Some medieval weapon or two, a bland pattern and color. WHY?
The first cover you may like or not but it conveys a story! It catches attention. The second I wouldn't even pause in front of.
I know that romance novels have (sadly) moved from those gonzo covers with shirtless dudes clutching busty ladies but this is not even that. This is just boring.
Two corollaries.
One: I miss 1990s fascination with blond dudes holding their OTPs. Here is Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince (a delightful old school fantasy read I totally recommend.)
Two: I can't say I get the romance novel cover switch either. This is the old cover for Justine Davis' Lord of the Storm:
This is the new cover:
It's not any less eye popping but it's kinda odd to leave off the heroine (though as someone who's read this novel more than once (it hits some VERY specific kinks; if you read it you know which ones. This is my judgment free zone :P) I am still not sure where she was clutching the dude's leg while wearing a nightie and 1980s hair.)
There are some amazing relatively recent covers that fight the bland and photoshop:
I mean look at this beauty! I checked out this trilogy because of that cover! It's just as gloriously pulpy as the cover promises (side note if you like fucked up x fucked up battle couple, dude finding meaning of life and learning to trust because of one deadly woman, and hot blond guys with supernatural powers and hot dark haired ladies with a huge kill count, boy do I have a series for you.)
Anyway, I don't even know where this is going any more except you should read all the novels I mentioned.

@sentofight :: [why do you think qator did not expose who the mysterious l'cie was? is it related to knowing that Cid is behind this so he does not want to get on his bad side? tell me your qator hc pls]
First let list what cycles the players are privy of knowing:
Agito :: The mobile game of the very first cycle. Ace is the only member of Class 0 at this time with the other members being in different classes. Not too much focus on them as the game focuses on you, the player as you're the one that fight (and dies) at the end. BAD ENDING #1
Novel :: Spiral 600,104,970 the cycle right before Type 0 takes place. Things happen slightly different here in regards on who becomes the White Crystal's I'cie Qator instead of Machina. Who becomes the Judge Rem vs. Cid. Celestia being on Rubrum's side after Andoria's death. Celestia did chance after the sniper to discover it was a setup by the Milities. Everyone here still dies. BAD ENDING #600,104,970. Arecia doesn't let anyone have fun.
Type 0 :: Spiral 600,104,971; the cycle that brings everything to an end. Just take the prior cycle and times by 10 + reverse what happened in the prior cycle + pain + sprinkle a dash of Arecia actually listening to her kids. HAPPY ENDING... this the only happy ending there is.
With that quick run down out of the way. Let's get to the main topic of this ask. Despite Qator being fiercly loyal to Marshal Cid Aulstyne. He doesn't seem to completely trust whole heartedly. Yes, Cid did recognize Qator's hardwork and merit thus backing him in the Academy. Qator than climbed the ranks with his own power even though Cid did support him.
As for the not completely trusting Cid whole heartedly. There were a few times that Qator questioned Cid's orders/actions, but never voiced these allowed. For someone who is fiercely loyal you would think he wouldn't be questioning his benefactor. He probably done this through out all the spirals.
With this in mind Qator not revealing who the mysterious I'cie is to Cid make some sense. He doesn't completely trust Cid to not completely take advantage of Machina for his own means to accomplish his goal. Though, part of me strongly believes why he didn't tell Marshal Cid is due this:
He remembers having a sibling, that he was a BIG BROTHER when his younger sister was still alive as well as his parents. It was commented at least once by an Imperial Soldier that Aria Luricara look like General Qator's LATE YOUNGER SISTER. In the manga Qator is shown looking at a portrait of his (late) family. He may, from repeated cycles, retain a strong sense of responsibilty (and maybe sympathy) towards those who remind him of his younger sister who passed away young. I doubt he truly forgot her due to the Crystal ctrl + alt + del memories of the deceased. If he was chosen as the White Tiger Crystal's numerous times outside of the cycles players are aware about. Qator developing a sort immunity to it in a way would explain. Looking at a picture of his (late) family would bring up feelings of nostalgia. When he saw that Aria (in a sense) left behind by the rest of Suzaku forces he had immediately taken her under his wing to prevent her from being excuted. He probably felt protective towards Machina knowing he was the new l'Cie without informing Cid.
Does Qator have a big brother mode? Yes, yes he does and it shows when he takes the Suzaku chicks under his wing. Hell, Aria stays in Qator's quarter (separate room) and I can only assume it the same deal with Machina. Both are still kids while Aria can be a loose canon (with her mouth, the scene when Qator tells Aria she can speak normally with him it like he immediately regrets) he can probably tell that Machina is struggling. Struggling with what exactly? He can only take a guess to what it is and observe him to figure out what it is.
#sentofight#📣ㅤ⊰ ㅤmun answered ` what you ask is what you get#( hello; the name is yin and welcome to my 'ted talk' where i talk about qator~#( qator enthusit? qator enthuist~

Tag Nine People You Want To Get To Know Better
Oh, thanks for the tag @lousvintagehelmet, never done that one before.
Three ships : I don't ship a lot so there isn't a ton to pick from... Hannigram is iconic and always close to my heart. Silco/Vander, for obvious reasons (waves at all my Arcane fics), and then... mmmh... Thrawn/Obi-Wan. I *really* want that non-existing ship and I started writing it!! But I took a break and breaks are dangerous...
First ever ship : I have no idea and I'm baffled anyone can remember their first ship. I'm old. I've enjoyed a lot of media. Probably Han/Leia? Just from how addicted I was to the original trilogy as a child? I had a major crush on Han for the longuest time too.
Last Song : Nicola Cruz, Cumbia Del Olvido
Currently Reading : ebook : The Fisherman, a horror novel by John Langan Paper book : Real Tigers, a spy novel by Mick Herron Fic : Frakrr Say by @lanzzo
Curently Watching : TLOU. But also about to start a rewatch of Andor with a friend! Only my 4th or 5th time lmao
Consumming : the candle on both ends.
Currently Craving : Sleep & Productivity, a moebius ribbon.
tagging 9 folks, please start your own posts! @chelbizzaro @lanzzo @spicedrobot @bucky-yes @straydaddy @millyquickduck @recom-recruit @veramitar @tremendouskoalachild

ok sorry in advance for bothering you, feel free to tell me to get lost, but i was wondering if you, the resident expert, have any monster romance recs that aren’t way too. nsfw i guess? maybe it’s just me but i’m having a hard time finding any. like i’m more interested in the slow burn and the romance but the genre seems to be mainly fast paced erotica and i just can’t get into it
OOh!!! No need to be sorry, I'm always happy to answer stuff like this and talk about (cleaner) monster romances!! I'm honored you'd consider me an expert, though! 🥺💛I feel like I don't actually talk about monster romances all that much!
But I agree that it can be hard to find a monster romance that isn't erotica. Not that erotica isn't good, I just like seeing slow burn romances, too!
I wish I could provide a longer list, but here's what I got so far! (and if anyone finds this and wants to add onto this list, feel free to do so in comments, tags, reblogs, etc)
I will provide links/titles to these stories, say the genre(s), provide a short synopsis in my own words, and then say why I recommend it below the cut!
Axiom's End by Lindsay Ellis | sci-fi, alternate history, conspiracy fiction, action/adventure
"An alternate history novel set in 2008 where whistleblower Nils Ortega leaks information to the public that the US government is secretly harboring extraterrestrial refugees. Cora Sabino, Nils' daughter, finds herself developing a connection with one of these aliens after inadvertently becoming the sole communication between humans and aliens."
This series is fucking great!! Admittedly, the monster/alien romance take more of a backseat to the larger plot, and mostly focuses on themes surrounding humanity, human rights, language, trauma, etc. Ellis does such a great job at writing characters that are just so... human, and deep. There is so much complexity and nuance that goes into this series, and just... it's so good! Definitely recommend if you're more into the super slow burns, alien romances, alien action movies like Michael Bay's Transformers series or Independence Day.
"The Courtship of Mr. Lyon" and "The Tiger's Bride" in The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter | Gothic, feminist fiction, fairytale retelling, horror, anthology
"'The Courtship of Mr. Lyon' follows the romance between Beauty and Beast after Beauty's father takes one of the lion-faced Beast's white roses while taking shelter following a car accident; in 'The Tiger's Bride' a young woman is sent to live with a mysterious masked man after her father gambles her away in a game of cards."
Honestly this book, though a collection of short stories, is one of my all-time favorite books! Carter's writing style is so, so gorgeous and lyrical, and she provides such fantastic, dark, moody, gory, horrific feminist fairytales. Her story "The Bloody Chamber" is also worth checking out! Honestly, this whole book is great!
Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley | Fantasy, romance, fairytale retelling
"Classic Beauty and the Beast retellings."
Despite both being BATB retellings by the same author, both are so, so good in their own ways! While Beauty is way more classic and straightforward in its retelling, the characters are so endearing, the fantasy world is enchanting, and the writing is so *chefs kiss*. Rose Daughter is much the same, only slightly more adult in its tone and writing style - and its ending!
The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus | Romance, historical
"A mute janitor working in a high-security government facility falls in love with an amphibious creature."
Yeah, yeah, this is basically the novelized version of the movie lmao. I've not read the whole novel itself, but it's not half-bad!! It's decent enough - though I still feel like the movie to be better. Still worth checking out, I think!
Frankenstein's Monster by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe | Historical
"A sequel, of sorts, to Mary Shelley's classic novel. What becomes of Frankenstein's monster after Frankenstein dies? Where does he go, left to wander the earth?"
Not really a romance, per say, but there are SOME elements of romance! Mostly, this book follows Frankenstein's monster following the OG novel, who he all meets, and it is very much a character study on the monster! It's super fascinating, but its writing style is super similar to Mary Shelley's, so this very much reads like a classic novel. Honestly, I love how O'Keefe was able to mimic Shelley's style so well! But, again, romance is way more lowkey and this is more of a character study than anything else. Definitely reccomend if you loved the OG Shelley novel!
Beauty and the Beast by Megan Kearny | Webcomic, romance, fantasy, fairytale retelling
"A retelling of Beauty and the Beast."
Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told, this comic is just SO GOOD!! It very much has the same vibes as Robin McKinley's novels, and is steeped in a cozy fantasy atmosphere! The characters are so loveable, the story intriguing, and just AAAUUGGGHHH SO GORGEOUS!!
Netvor: Beauty and the Beast by @rosesnwater | Fantasy, romance, fairytale retelling
"Aceline Capet swears to slay the monster Netvor that lurks in the forest surrounding her village - and ends up becoming entrenched in the world of magic and monsters and Fae."
LEGIT JUST UGH!!!!!!!! THIS NOVEL IS SO FUCKING GOOD!! Legit this is one of my all-time favorite reads from this year! If you love fantasy featuring actual, lore-accurate faeries and super intriguing slow burn romance with endearing characters, please please PLEASE check this out!!!!!!! I SWEAR YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED!! Definitely recommend if you love fantasy movies like Legend, Labyrinth, Thumbelina, Howl's Moving Castle, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, etc. or books like Naomi Novik's Uprooted, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Robin McKinley's work, etc.! It also currently being rewritten as a(n equally beautiful) webcomic that should definitely be checked out as well!
That Which We Call Beast by @raph-fangirl | Historical fiction, romance, fairytale retelling
"A young woman is seeking marriage, and comes into contact with a mysterious bachelor that hides himself from her behind a veil."
Basically if Jane Austen wrote Beauty and the Beast! Definitely a well-written slow burn! It's not completed yet, but with what's available to read it's legit so beautiful!! The prose is so well-crafted, and it legit feels as though I'm reading an Austen novel! Definitely recommend if you love films like the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice!
Then uhhhh not to toot my own horn but if you wanna read a Victorian Era Gothic romance-horror BATB retelling with a pathetic meow-meow of a monster I offer my story The Monster and the Butterfly- 🤲🥺
These are all the recs I have for now! Again, if there are any you'd like to add, whether they be published, a friend's online work, or your own work!! I hope these are helpful and satisfactory enough for ya!
Again, I love talking about monster romances, thank you so so much for this ask!!!! 🥺💛

kdrama rec/review: mystic pop up bar
KDRAMA AND CDRAMA MASTER LIST OF REVIEWS
Series: mystic pop up bar Episodes: NOT ENOUGH 12 Genres: urban fantasy, urban horror lite, found family!!!, friendship, mystery, comedy, supernatural, warm fuzzies despite an alarming amount of death Spoilers in the Rec: minor ones/for the set-up If You Like, You’ll Like: hotel del luna (although it has a very different feel), early bleach (manga), found families, being human (uk & us versions), those moments in shows where you’re like OH MAN HOW ARE THEY GETTING OUT OF THIS and then they do. because friendship.
Rank: 10/10
I went into this with low expectations. it sounded like it was trying to bank on hotel del luna, but i was still down to watch a ghost version of leverage or whatever this turned out to be. figured it’d be decent to watch but not AMAZING.
the first ep gave me that impression. by the second ep i was hooked. and by the third ep this was one of my favorite shows of all time
PREMISE
during the joseon era, a shaman named weol ju went and fucked up a perfectly good sacred tree. as punishment, she now has to resolve the grudges of 100,000 humans or go to hell. as a shaman, she can accomplish this by plying them with alcohol and entering their dreams (well the alcohol part might just be her artistic signature).
time to start a bar!
in the current day, 500 years later, weol ju owns and runs mystic pop up bar, where she learns about her customers’ grudges. and apparently has sound business strategy, as she serves like 4 people a day but still has enough overhead to craft these 4 people bespoke meals that speak to their inner tragedy. and also sandwiches.
helping her is chief gwi, a ghost cop who’s been reassigned to her bar to help weol ju accomplish her quota. because time’s running out--weol ju now has less than a month to solve her 10 remaining grudges.
enter bambi kang bae. a regular human who works a regular customer service job, kang bae has one terrible power: anytime someone touches him (or he touches them), they want to confess their deepest, darkest secrets. kang bae is understandably not comfortable around people (but desperately wants to be around people. my poor fucking heart) and incredibly lonely.
when his and weol ju’s paths cross, she makes him an offer: he helps her out with her remaining grudges, and in return she’ll remove his powers.
deal!
MAIN CHARACTERS
weol ju
a 500+ year old shaman who is paying for her sins on earth because she went out on a limb :| . begins the series angry and ends the series angry, because it turns out angry people can still be kind, which is great to see with a female protagonist. how close she’s cutting it to the deadline on her quota speaks strongly to sixth-year senior vibes. wears modern versions of hanboks which are all v. cool and on moments of aching realization wednesdays she wears pink.
will steal your shit and look you straight in the eyes as she walks backwards into hell.
gwi/gui
a former ghost cop who’s been reassigned to help weol ju run the mystic pop up bar. he’s a lot more chill than weol ju and has the vibe of someone who forgets keys at home. while at the bar, he does a lot of the prep work, and is sometimes asked by yeom to help catch nearby, evil spirits.
he’s actually like a hardcore warrior, but you forget it because he wears goggles to cut onions and dresses like someone who would be the spokesperson for microwaveable fish sticks. team dad. fanboy of romantic serial e-novels.
han kang bae
a baby.
in a truly amazing narrative move, kang bae works customer service at a market by day and solves grudges at a bar by night. is a sweet, simple boy who just wants to help people and is SO EXCITED to have new friends in weol ju and gwi. you want to give him a hug BUT YOU CAN’T. human carebear
even the yellow collar of his customer service uniform makes a heart:
SOME SUPPORT CHARACTERS SELECTED BY HOW MUCH THEY ARE MY FAVORITES
kang yeo ri
lmao you know it’s going to be good when a character is introduced dropping a dude straight to the ground. yeo rin is a bodyguard mild spoiler turned security guard for the market where kang bae works. she could beat the shit out of you and you’d thank her. has no luck in dating. rocks a suit. sobs at movies about gout
yeom, the grim reaper
your friendly neighborhood grim reaper. yeom very much screams middle management, and works in the same “district” that weol ju and gwi have their pop up bar in. sometimes they’re at odds with one another (because weol ju has about the same amount of respect for the rules that an untrained puppy has for new carpet), but they’re still friends. gwi sometimes works with him to catch evil spirits, buddy-cop style. loves noodles.
yeomra-daewang
god of the underworld. in charge of handing out punishments and determining the fates of those sent to the afterlife. forgets who she’s texting. appreciates true love but is also aggressively annoyed by it. take your fucking scroll and go
samsin
probably the character with the most name recognition. samsin (or samsin granny) is the goddess of mothers and children, and in the show the focus is more on children. loves karaoke, basic bitch coffee, and claw games. gives out too many sexy tiger dreams.
kim wong hyun
he gave them the heebie jeebies. he had nothing else to give
ringtones.
they’re their own character. check out those motifs.
Drawbacks
if i had any, it’s that the first episode undersells the rest of the series. and even the first ep isn’t bad
12 episodes is not enough :(
Reasons to Watch.
i love the little details: that the supernatural characters have ring tones that correspond to their role (ex: the god of the underworld’s are screams; i believe the grim reaper’s are a shaman’s bells?, gwi has SPOILERS), or that the food special of the day connects or reflects with the person they’re helping. themes/significant moments are represented by the colors characters are wearing. im a nerd for this stuff
there are some dramatic reveals about who characters are and how they relate to one another, but like. dynamics barely (or don’t at all) change, and that’s due to how strong/familial they are already? and the show’s built up to it and it all feels really earned A+
i HATE monster of the week formats, but the ones in this show are integrated with the main characters’ backstories and also propel the major arcs forward. and it’s wholesome when the grudges are solved
i like that you think you saw a full scene in the flashbacks, but then a few eps later the flashback gets extended. idk it’s a cool narrative device
the romance is wonderful all-around
the pacing was great. i wish one of the Reveals was introduced earlier just so we could have more moments with it, but everything was cohesive/wrapped up nicely
all the characters have their own unique relationships to one another. kang bae + weol ju have their own dynamic, weol ju +gwi, gwi + kang bae, and so on. it was nice to see that none of the main trio were satellite characters
Final Thoughts.
they’re a team, god damn it ;;;;;;
#mystic pop up bar#hwang jung eum#yook sungjae#choi won young#kdrama#gizka does kdrama#!my post#i love it and them :(

I have heard of quite a few of these and seen most of the manga come thru my register at work lol. I can second the Check Please rec (it’s also a webcomic!) and I’ve been reading the newer Books of Magic in the past year or so ironically enough and thought it was fun, was considering fishing some of the 90s out of the dollar bin at a local comic shop but the condition wasn’t good. Calvin and Hobbes is a CLASSIC and I’ve been meaning to get around to Kingsmen cause I enjoyed the movies. DC Bombshells is a GIFT. A Gift. And I adore the Earth One Teen Titans, kinda wished they’d continued it. Kingdom Come is another classic and something I was leant in high school, I was very lucky in high school lol. Lumberjanes is adorable as well! I know you said you weren’t looking to start new stuff but Fence is a good one and has Check Please vibes. The Umbrella Academy is also great when it comes to just weird superhero flavored nonsense. And Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is a classic for a very good reason.

L'anime è diretto da Yuuki Itoh (Granblue Fantasy the Animation, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid) e sceneggiato da Kiyoko Yoshimura (Linebarrels of Iron, The God of High School). Il design dei personaggi si basa su quello concepito da LAM ed è adattato per l’animazione da Reiko Nagasawa. La colonna sonora è invece realizzata da Yoshihiro Ike (The Great Passage, Dororo, Tiger & Bunny). Al progetto partecipano anche il musicista Marasy, in qualità di pianista principale e il direttore d’orchestra Hirofumi Kurita, che fa da consulente musicale.

NY / After Our Bodies Meet
Cyriaco Lopes, Sunset (documentation of a performance), 1997, Inkjet Print, 4” x 6″
After Our Bodies Meet January 9 – February 14, 2021 The gallery will be open every Sat & Sun from 3 – 6pm and by appointment
Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present After Our Bodies Meet, a group exhibition curated by Daniel Johnson, featuring works by Margrethe Aanestad, Daniel Arturo Almeida, Dalia Amara, Cyriaco Lopes, and Randy West.
In the novel Tar Baby, Toni Morrison wrote, “At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough.” Exploring themes of love and memory, the artists in this show have created works that grapple with how we relate to each other and ultimately posit the question: What is enough? Whether through the investigation of familial bonds as with Almeida and Amara’s work, romantic love in West’s series, or the nature of being in the work of Aanestad and Lopes, the works in this show evoke an ethos of delicateness and a celebration of impermanence.
Margrethe Aanestad
is a Norwegian-born artist (1974), living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Stavanger, Norway. Aanestad studied fine arts at the Rogaland Art College and graduated with a BA from the University of Stavanger in Culture&Art Management (2000). She works in drawing, painting and sculpture, and has exhibited internationally at galleries including Open Source Gallery, NY; Torrance Shipman, NY; Dimensions Variable, Miami; Interface gallery, CA; Kunsthall Stavanger (Norway), Abingdon Studios, England. Since 2001 she has worked independently to initiate, produce, and curate projects at the art scene in Stavanger, where she also co-founded and co-directed the artist-run, non-profit, space Prosjektrom Normanns (2011- 2020). She is one of the co-founders and co-owner of the creative studio/working space ELEFANT (est 2013-). Aanestad serves on the advisory board of Kunsthall Stavanger and Open Source Gallery (NYC). Currently she is working on a commission for NYU/Clive Davis Institute, and will soon enter a 3 month-residency at Residency Unlimited, NY.
Daniel Arturo Almeida
(b. 1992. Caracas, Venezuela) is a cultural producer and artist working through photography, installation, archiving, journalism, and public engagement. His practice chronicles intimate and collective stories that shape belief systems and hierarchies of power in the Americas. The product of generational migrations, Almeida researches images, music, anecdotes, and documents portraying national pride, nostalgia, and collective amnesia. The work observes shared culture through loss, decadence, hope, and empathy. He has exhibited in The U.S.A in various institutions, galleries, and festivals, including La Salita Project, Columbia Teachers College, Project for Empty Space, Satellite Art Show, Doral Contemporary Art Museum, and the SVA Chelsea Galleries, among others. Almeida holds an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (2020) and a BFA in Painting and Installation from Florida International University (2017). He currently lives and works in Queens, NY.
Dalia Amara is an American-Jordanian multidisciplinary artist in New York working in photography, video, performance, and sculpture. Amara was raised in the US, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, and UAE. Amara has lectured, screened, and exhibited in New York, Toronto, and online at White Columns, Gallery 44, and Selena Gallery. Her work has been reviewed in The New Yorker, Artnet News, and The Art Newspaper.
