I went to a craft group this evening in a Vietnamese coffee house, and I met a lady whose partner is studying ancient cave paintings. She told me that he has been studying mnemonics in aboriginal art, including dance and sculpture, and how often things which appear to be simply an image of something else actually contain vital information about the thing pictured: a cave painting of a stag might include marks which indicate the time of year such a creature is most commonly born, or the steps of a dance might contain a coded performance of how best to take down such an animal in a hunt. Knowledge designed to be preserved and celebrated, but also protected and guarded, is therefore coded into art.

All this to say: do the trees themselves of this new Harbour not tell you its story?
