Because the Darcy Lewis Bingo Mod Team are writers and artists ourselves, we understand that not all prompts are created equal and, therefore, are not necessarily inspiring to all creators. So, for 2024-25, we are including a list of 10 fun, spooky alternate prompts you’re welcome to use on any day you get stumped by the creator prompts we’ve supplied above. Each alternate prompt may only be used once, however, so use them wisely and don’t take them for granted. These are not easier prompts by any means! Promptober begins on August 3rd, 2024 this round, but you know how we feel about deadlines. 🔪 So, for this round of Promptober, we’re doing away entirely with hard deadlines and we mean it! You have from August 3rd, 2024 until our next Halloween event begins, and even beyond that, if you like! Though we do strongly recommend wrapping up this challenge before the next spooky challenge begins, this event remains open basically as long as this bingo exists. No pressure to complete, ever, just inspo and encouragement. 🧡

Promptober Challenges

Promptober Mini Challenge: choose and complete fannish works for any 13 of the prompts from this list for our mini challenge. Creators may choose 13 prompts from the list of prompts—any 13 prompts at all!

Promptober Mega Challenge: choose and complete fannish works for 31 of the listed prompts for our spooky main event! Creators may choose any 31 of the total 93 prompts listed to complete this event.

For an extra personal challenge, you may limit yourself to only posting a fanwork inspired by one of the prompts listed by the number that corresponds to each day of October for every day of the month all month long, but it’s absolutely not required for completion of this event. We want you to succeed and create, and to share new Darcy works, so our goal is always to support you in your fannish creative endeavors and make that as easy as possible.

Promptober 2024 Guidelines

Promptober fills must prominently feature our beloved Lady of Astrophysics, Dr. Darcy Lewis!

Promptober creators have all of our 2024-2025 round to work on this event! If you want to work on it the whole year until we release the next spooky season event, we encourage you to do that. If spooky challenges are particularly your jam, we’d love to see what you do with ours when you’ve got the whole year to tackle it!

entries—Your fanwork is NOT required to use the prompt exactly as it appears on this list. Prompts need only inspire your fanwork, whether they appear word for word in it or not. However the prompt inspires you is correct, as far as we’re concerned. Subvert the prompt, reverse the prompt, marry the prompt—it’s up to you.

All forms of fannish works are accepted and encouraged for this event! Fanfic, fanart, poetry, podfics, fanvids, playlists, fiber and other crafts, fan edits, moodboards, etc.

You may start posting your Promptober fanworks as soon as they’re ready to share. No need to wait until October and no need to rush to get them all done in that month, either.

Fanwork Fill Requirements

100 words for written works or word art, with the exception of poetry with independent formatting rules (such as haikus).

1 image for artwork or handcrafts of any kind and a description for the visually impaired of the medium used and what it represents.

Today I thought that it's been a long time since I've posted an update to my Halloween fic list, but I haven't read many new fics since, so I though for today's post (because I don't have anything ready anyway) I would go through my MFL List and post up the ones that have been recommended to me throughout the years! Please note I have not read any of these, these are just based on a tag search on my offlline list :)

Wanted: Empath by nutmeag83 (T, 4,886 w., 1 Ch. || Supernatural Elements AU || Empath John, Ghost Hunter Sherlock, Halloween, Haunted Houses, Pining John, Resolved Romantic Tension, Friends to Lovers) – Sherlock is a ghost hunter and John his empath assistant. Near Halloween, they investigate a ghostly sighting at a mansion in the English countryside. The events of their investigation bring their feelings for each other to the fore.

Food goes on the food shelf by avalanching effect (G, 5,283 w., 1 Ch. || Halloween, Pre-Slash, Crack/Humour, Cannibalism, Magical Realism, Witches, Light Gore, POV Sherlock) – John, (without conferring with Sherlock) implements a system of organization in the kitchen. There are areas designated as 'experiment' areas, and others as 'food safe' areas. Crossover, however, is bound to happen.

In a manner of speaking I'm dead by fellshish (T, 6,372 w., 1 Ch. || Halloween, Mystrade, Angst With Happy Ending, PIning, First Kiss, Drunk Idiots, Drinking Games, Humour) – Sherlock and John accidentally dress in matching outfits for Lestrade's Halloween party. Things only get worse: someone pushes them to play 'Never have I ever'.

A Beautifully Frightening Revelation by 221b_careful_what_you_wish_for (M, 6,486 w., 2 Ch. || Supernatural Elements AU|| Ghosts, Haunted House, First Kiss/Times, Frottage, Fluff, Halloween, Mutual Pining, Bed Sharing, Spooky) – John and Sherlock are investigating an isolated country manor haunted by a mischievous ghost. A series of spooky incidents brings them together in a candlelit bedroom, the night ripe for revelations and facing fears.

The Babadook by CatieBrie (T, 6,886 w., 1 Ch. || Babadook Fusion || Post-TRF, Horror, Demonic Possession, Violence, Halloween, Grief, Angst with Happy Ending) – “A children’s book,” John mutters as he flips it open. The pages are scrawled with beautiful charcoal lines and thick black ink. The cover, bright red, edges the open pages and something tugs at the back of John’s brain. It’s a familiar feeling, black and tarrish and thick in his thoughts. He shakes it off and picks the book up off his bed, turning so that he can sit on the edge and spread the book out across his knees. If it’s in a word or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook. He turns the page, ignoring the pressure building beneath his chest. There’s a closet on one page; paper doors meant to be opened by the reader flutter as John reads the text on the other page.

The Spirit Child by VelvetMace (M, 7,287 w., 1 Ch. || Psychological Horror, Disturbing Themes, Horror, Gore) – A small wooden box filled with clay and feotus bones yields more than just clues to a violent murder. A Halloween Story. Read at your own risk -- and I do not say this lightly.

Were it Well by merelypassingtime (G, 7,496 w., 6 Ch. || Shapeshifter AU || Crack, Halloween) – When moving in with the world's only consulting detective John is concerned he won't be able to keep his secret. Turns out he need not have worried.

In the Shadows of 221B by CarmillaCarmine (E, 8,299 w., 5 Ch. || Halloween, Friends to Lovers, Spooky Smut) – On a stormy, Halloween night, Sherlock appears changed, but John isn't about to complain about anything Sherlock wants to do to him. Part 10 of the The Stories of Angst and Heartbreak series

Let's Say I Let You In by kedgeree (E, 9,972 w., 1 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE|| Halloween, Costume Kink, Established Relationship, Humour, Smut, Vampire Sherlock, Bloodplay, Biting, Romance) – It's Halloween and Sherlock's vampire costume is turning John on, but Sherlock doesn't quite get the idea of a sexy vampire. But it's John Watson's job to look after Sherlock Holmes, come hell, high water, or Hallowe'en, so that's just what he's going to do.

Eyes meet, sparks fly, and Sherlock's entire world is turned upside down as he has to decide whether that tingly feeling is lust, love, magic, or a combination of all three.

How many works do you have on AO3? 42, but a lot of those are podfic that has me as co-author -- 33 not counting podfic.

What's your total AO3 word count? normal amount. 1,710,483

What fandoms do you write for? I am serially monofannish. Right now I only write for the MCU, but before that my main fandom for YEARS was Star Wars, then prior to that Narnia (most of my Narnia fic isn't on AO3). There are a few stray other fandoms on there.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Immutable, or, 5 Times Obi-Wan Kenobi Compromised His Jedi Ethics for Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars, 5907), Wake the Storm (Star Wars, 5163), Queen's Gambit (Star Wars, 2632), On the Edge of the Devil's Backbone (Star Wars Rebels, 1839), On Yonder Hill (MCU, 1656). yes I'm aware that there is an enormous drop-off between Wake and Gambit lol, but I'm very glad one of my Marvel fics snuck in there.

Do you respond to comments? No, I have a policy about not replying to comments unless I get a direct question.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Almost definitely Gambit, since it ends on a cliffhanger with the main trio separated in another universe, Rex left behind in the Gambitverse, and the Gambitverse a mess. Made more angsty by the fact that I refuse to touch that series ever again.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I'm going to go with On Yonder Hill. It ends with a party! Thor and Loki and the Avengers (except Wanda) are happy! I forcibly strangled my automatic reflex to set up a sequel like six times while writing it.

Do you get hate on fics? HA HA HA HA yes.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? If you are very lucky you will get one semi-explicit sex scene from me every few years. I'm not very good at writing smut and I tend to get bored writing it, which is why I don't do it very often.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Not recently because I'm not really that interested in them, but I have in the past. I once wrote Susan Pevensie/Willy Wonka, which is probably up there.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? uh, maybe, but I don't think so.

Have you ever had a fic translated? I've had a lot of requests, but I don't think I've ever said yes.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, in the past. I'm very unlikely to ever do so again due to Some Trauma.

What’s your all time favorite ship? Odysseus/Penelope but if you meant, like, in a fannish sense, probably Kanan/Hera.

What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I'd love to finish Dust in the Air, my big Narnia TLB AU, but I'd have to completely rewrite it because I'm such a different writer now than I was when I was still working on it.

What are your writing strengths? I'm very good at plot, I'm probably one of the best action writers in fandom, I'm great worldbuilding, and I like to think I'm pretty decent at character voice and dialogue.

What are your writing weaknesses? I don't do brevity and I get bored writing sex scenes. I cannot write a one-shot. I do not remember the last time I wrote a story under 50K.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I wouldn't do extended dialogue (because I don't speak any other languages well enough to be comfortable doing so), but there are words and the occasional sentence in there.

First fandom you wrote for? well, it was before I knew what fandom was, but it was either The Mummy or The 10th Kingdom

Favorite fic you’ve written? I really loved The Horizon Line, but usually the answer is whatever I'm working on now.

I was really surprised by that, but I guess I shouldn't be? I always take for granted that my most "popular" fic on AO3 (and probably FFnet too) is Villains (my "the Flash's Rogues react to the events of the JLU Cadmus arc finale" fic) - but it's a one-shot, while FTaH has 24 chapters and is 162k words long. Hopefully it means people come back until they have finished reading it?

• Second Most Kudos: Reading the Colours (TMNT 2012) (220 kudos)

Aww 💜 I've seen vowels with the same colours since before I can remember (like, for me "A" is red, "E" is pink/purple, "I" is yellow, "O" is blue and "U" is green and I have no idea why) I and I thought that might be a good trait to give 2012 Mikey.

• Third Most Comments: Valse à trois temps (The Mummy series - ish, pre-canon) (51 comment threads)

Oh man, that's the biggest surprise?? But again, when I think about it it's not; it's 14 chapters long and the same three people left a comment on each chapter (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH). • Fourth Most Bookmarks: Culture Shock (TMNT 1987 & TMNT 2003 crossover) (62 bookmarks)

I was going to say "this one's special" but they're all special in some way ^^ I both loved and was frustrated by the Turtles Forever giant crossover film, and after watching a few 1987 episodes I wanted to do these little guys justice, a bit. Also it was fun to get into 2003 Donny's head. He's my favourite turtle after 2003 Mikey :o)

• Fifth Most Words: Pirouette (The Mummy series - ish, pre-canon) (16,376 words)

Ah, yes, the thing that was supposed to be a 2k or 4k words one-shot and that's it 😄 Since a lot of my one-shots average at 10k words I'm not surprised to find this one here, tbh.

• Least Words: technically, Scar Tissue (Critical Role - Vox Machina campaign), because since it's a comics it clocks at a round number of 0 words :D But barring this and the podfics, then it's Onomatopoeia (Justice League Unlimited) (236 words)
