જ⁀➴ 𝐊𝐈𝐒𝐒 𝐌𝐄 . . . (𝐋. 𝐍.)
— whilst you love the excitement that comes with dating a formula one driver, you cherish the quiet, private moments with lando far more
+ part of my 'be my valentine' mixtape series ! inspired by 'kiss me' by sixpence none the richer, which is one of my fav songs of all time <3
whenever you told someone that your boyfriend drove formula one cars for a living, their initial response was always to 'ooh' and 'ahh' over how luxurious that must be for you. you must be so well travelled, spoiled with tons of gifts, showered with champagne any time he did well on track.
and you would agree - it was true, after all - but those were never your favourite parts of dating lando norris.
what you loved most about lando was how himself he was, no matter how bright the spotlight that shone on him became. it was lando being so quintessentially, well, lando, that had led you to the dreamlike date you were currently on together.
no longer phased by late night texts requesting your company at any hour of the day, you'd wasted no time in getting yourself dressed up for a mystery date the moment lando had messaged you about it.
and now, sat beneath the stars on the hood of his car, you felt like the luckiest person to walk the earth. how lando had found such a pretty, secluded location, you'd never know. part of the beauty was not knowing.
bar the moon acting as your chaperone, it was just you and lando for as far as you were aware. for one night, you were granted your own part of the earth, a land that could be your own.
lando, cheesy as ever, had began to play some romantic old love song from his car speakers, a gesture that was only briefly delayed by the house song he'd accidentally queued up first.
once you'd controlled your giggles, lando had held out his hand, stooping down into a bow and playing the part of a gentleman.
"can i have this dance?" he asked, grin so wide his eyes began to crinkle up at the corners.
hesitant was a feeling you never experienced around lando. your hand was in his before you had time to think.
neither of you were particularly well versed in the art of dance, but you knew each other like the back of your own hands, and each step and movement was fluid, second nature after years together.
the silver moon cast a glittering glow over your intertwined frames, a spotlight for your personal duet that caught lando's face perfectly in it's light.
"you're staring," lando mused, eyes sparkling in amusement as he realised he'd caught you.
"you're making it hard not to," you admitted, eyes flitting down to the curve of his top lip briefly before you met his eyes once more.
"so i'm a distraction, am i?"
it was a joke, yet his fondness for you outweighed the humour in the tone of his voice.
"well, you said it not me."
lando laughed at this, a sound that never failed to make your heart skip a beat.
"i think i can be even more of a distraction," he hummed.
in one swift move, lando's lips were on yours as his hands gripped your waist firmly. the kiss was soft, yet passionate, the movements of his tongue somehow tracing everything he could never say to you into the cavern of your mouth.
being at the track with lando was fun, as was the winter trips to ski lodges and summer holidays in resorts. but without a doubt, your favourite place to be with lando was underneath the haze of the milky twilight, lips locked as his heart bore roots into your own chest.

kiss me
୨ৎ theodore nott x fem!reader (a lot of fluff)
୨ৎ warnings : not proofread
୨ৎ word count : 484
୨ৎ summary : you and theo finally admit that you are in love with another.
a.n : was listening to kiss me by sixpence none the richer and suddenly wanted to write some cute fluff
"this is ridiculous" you giggled as you twirled showing theo the blue floor length dress you currently wore. you weren't used to wearing anything close to this fancy and you felt silly being this dressed up.
theodore had invited you to an event his parents were throwing, you just hadn't expected everything would be this expensive looking.
"you look beautiful, baby" he promised looking at you with his pretty brown eyes as he pulled you in, lightly kissing your lips before pulling away and dragging you with him.
"what-where are we going?" you questioned as you followed him, his hand still lightly grasping yours.
"it's fine, we won't be long. my parents won't even notice we left" he reassured as he continued to lead you further away from his manor.
you felt you're breath hitch as you suddenly stopped noticing the view ahead of you. it was a long, seemingly never ending field littered with flowers of all kind. the only source of light at this late hour being the moon and the stars which you could see clearly here.
you looked over at him excitedly, your eyes twinkling in excitement at the gorgeous view. he was already looking at you with a lopsided grin, knowing you would've loved to see this.
"it's so beautiful" you finally announce after a moment of silence, where you took in the view.
"not as beautiful as you" he replied as he stepped closer to you, his body and scent consuming all your thoughts.
"that was so cheesy" you teased, laughing as he joined in. suddenly he grabbed your cheek, his hand soft against your skin. his eyes looked lighter in the moonlight and you found yourself entranced by his features as they basked perfectly in the night.
theo’s eyes softened and he slowly exhaled, you could tell he was clearly nervous causing a sudden burst of butterflies in your stomach out of nerves for what he was going to say.
"i love you. i've never been sure of anything more in my life." he uttered, the words whispered into the quiet night. you felt your words gets caught in your throat as a small smile pulled at your lips.
you pulled him down by his neck, connecting your lips in a soft kiss which you hoped translated all the deep feeling you felt for him. you pulled away grinning so hard, your cheeks hurt "i love you too"
at your words he pulled you in for a deeper kiss, it was passionate and slow as he rubbed his thumb gently against your cheek, the small touch grounding you.
being in this field with his lips on yours, you knew that this was all you ever wanted and all you will ever need.

Sun x Moon in The On1y One
I wrote briefly earlier about the “looking at the moon” scene in episode eleven of The On1y One, but regardless of how this cookie crumbles in the last episode, I think this conversation was excellent.
The boys are the sun and the moon, which I wrote about at the midway point of the series.
Wang is sun-coded. He is yellow and orange. He is openly friendly to his peers and warm toward them.
And the show has stated that he is the sun like when Wang was teasing Tian about the love poems he marked in the book, all the love poems were about the sun!
A girl's shyness is like a tender cherry under the sunlight; 16- and 17-year-olds are like fruits in the morning sun, sparkling
Therefore, the love poems were about Wang.
Tian is moon-coded. He is blue (and black). He isolates himself from his peers and is cold toward them. And now the show is stating that.,
But just like the book of love poems that revealed how Tian feels about Wang, we get an indirect glimpse of how Wang feels about Tian through this conversation.
It doesn't matter how good or bad the subtitles are because the focus is that Tian views the moon as something bad.
Life has it's ups and downs just like the moon waxes and wanes. It feels like everything connected to the moon is sad and full of regret. The moon shines on Earth every day, but only lights up half of it. Is that half kind of an eternity?
Tian thinks of himself and his life as sad. Everything that is connected to him, he thinks is full of regret. And he only allows people to see his outside by never letting others in. Yet Wang started this conversation off by stating his mom loved the moon and the Teresa Tang song, which we all of know since it was also featured in Moonlight Chicken!
youtube
"The Moon Represents My Heart" is an extremely popular Chinese song:
You ask how deeply I love you And just how great my love is My affection does not waver And my love doesn’t change The moon represents my heart
So not only has Wang established that he was raised to love the moon, but he also mentions this song which declares that he feels very deeply for his love and the fullness of the moon represents that love, which is probably why in the fourth episode, he was on the moon when his rocket ship came to get him.
In response to Tian's comments about the moon, Wang offers his take on the moon:
I don't agree with that. I think the moon often symbolizes light and hope, so even if it's only half, or just a moment, a second, as long as it's imprinted in your mind, it's eternal.
The conversation began because Wang's mom would ask his dad to pick between the moon and the sixpence, and in this, we see the great debate of love versus money, the future versus the present, and the abstract versus the practical. The moon is far and can't be held yet the sixpence is close and can be held. The moon would take time to get to, but the sixpence is within reach. The moon is a thought since it holds no value that can be seen, but the sixpence is money that can be used! And that's why the moon is love. And that's why Tian is the moon.
The Eclipse, Big Dragon, and Moonlight Chicken are just some BLs that gave us this sun and moon,
And the thing that they all get right is that the moon isn't the negative while the sun is positive.
The sun can burn. The sun can blind. The sun can harm. So it isn't always the positive entity that people tend to make it out to be. But the moon offers light in darkness. The moon guides the water in and out of the shores. The moon gives hope and guidance to those struggling.
So Wang's mom wanted him to pick the moon because she wanted him to pick love. She wanted him to see the possibilities rather than settle for what he had, which wasn't much. She wanted him to look to the future instead of worrying the present. She wanted him to not fear the distance, but instead know that the moon would guide him toward it. She wanted him to have hope.
And Tian gave him all of that.
So the conversation is lasagna. It has layers. It's about all these different things, but all these different things are the same thing. It's about Wang's mom. It's about the moon. It's about Tian. It's about love.
And it's about hope because regardless of what happens and no matter the distance, the moon always shines in the darkest of times, and guides those who are lost.
So even if everything looks bleak and all hope is lost, the moon will guide you home.

heyy i have a song and a driver which is kiss me by sixpence non the richer and max verstappen and i kinda envision it as like it's like the first date and do you know like after a date and the man would drop you off to the front door and kiss you kinda like that
Kiss me/ Max Verstappen
•Serie Masterlist ( Song x driver)
~Oh, kiss me, beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor~
You had been on this date for hours, laughing and talking over dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant in the heart of the city. It had been easy, effortless, like you had known each other for years instead of just a couple of weeks.
You were seated at the table, while Max was paying for the dinner. It took some time for him to let him pay for everything. You had seen the prices and you felt bad letting someone else pay for it. But Max said that he was the one to choose out of the restaurant so he wanted to pay for it.
"Are you ready to go?" Max asked as he walked back up to the table. He was dressed in a black tuxedo and you would be lying if it didn't look great on him. Why did he only wear the red bull kit?
You smile as you knock your head, "Yes, I want to get these heels off my feet." Max laughs as he holds out his arm for you to grab. Together you walk back to his car. He held the door open of his Ferrari for you to get in, before walking to the other side.
"I had a great time tonight with you." Max started the engine. "I hope we can do it again?'
You turn to him, "I had a great time, Max. You are very and I love to do this again."
"Great," He smiles as he places his hand on yours, your fingers intertwining. A blush formed on your cheeks and you turned your head to look outside the window. It wouldn't matter if Max saw it, because he looked the same.
You sat in comfortable silence as he drove you to your home. You couldn't help but admire the star filled sky. The full moon shined bright in the sky, one of the only lights fisible.
The car came to a stop and Max had to let go of your hand to park. You didn't notice that you were already here. As he parked the car, he was quickly running to the other side to open up your door and help you out. "Well Thank you sweet gentlemen." You blush again as you took his hand.
As you walked up together to your front door you both didn't know what to say. "Thank you for taking me home."
"No problem." he shrugged it off. You two stood very close to each other and Max eyes kept taking glances at your lips. "Can I kiss you?"
Your breath hitched in your throat as you breathed out a 'Yes'. Max placed his hands on each side of your head to pull you in for a kiss. It felt like thousands of fireflies found their ways inside your heart by the way it stood on fire.
You stood there, embraced with each other, kissing under the milky twilight. A soft moan escapes your mouth as the kiss deepens. One of your hands had found its way to Max's hair, grabbing it to make him lean in more.
As you break apart, pinks flushed with cheeks, Max says "We really have to do this again." and you couldn't help but agree.

an analysis : Xiao Zhan + The Moon & Sixpence 🌖
as usual with xzs videos like the one just released, you can make an entire thesis into the possible meanings of every chapter and frame. add it’s relation to xz and if you’re a pro, go deep into the techniques they used in shooting and editing. this one tho is centered around the theme of “the moon and sixpence” which is a book xz recommended before. I saw a few articles linking this to the elements on the vlog and so i looked into it.
i have lightly talked about some elements from the vlog yesterday but focused more on the quotes that appeared and the music chosen.
it’s been years since he mentioned this book and he didn’t even say that it’s his all-time-favorite. for example, the van gogh elements, we expect that already to be a recurring theme. as well as the moon, but this one has another connection to it. i am honestly curious where his headspace is at, and why, in this specific point in time he felt so close to the message of that book or some parts of it.
let me start with a synopsis and the book is available on googlebooks if you wanna try it out like i did. 🔖
with the plot alone, you can get a sense of why he would like it. at the time he read it, he was not yet the superstar xiao zhan that we know now. and this is why i guess he related to it more now. especially the sacrifices he has to make for the path he has chosen. this was evident in his GQ cover story interview where he compares himself to his other friends and how they have normal lives. the books is written in the first person POV of narrator who is looking into the stockbroker turned artist Charles Strickland. you get to see the thoughts of the narrator and how he views the main character of his story. the way i see it, the narrator is “Xiao Zhan the person” and how he sees “Xiao Zhan the public personality”. this concept of two sides to him was opened up in his esquire cover story and i can’t help but think it relates to this story.
i will be heavily quoting passages from the book that attracted me and i personally thought relates to xz. this is my personal interpretation only.
The greatness of Charles Strickland was authentic. It may be that you do not like his art, but at all events you can hardly refuse it the tribute of your interest. He disturbs and arrests.
the story starts of with this line and well isn’t this one way to describe xiao zhan? he has always been described as authentic and the “real deal” as far as idols and actors go. not many people are expected to like him or be part of his fan club and chase him — however, one thing is clear: he disturbs and arrests. his popularity is something that is unheard of and many artist and companies try to replicate. he is a disturbance to the norm in c-ent and why he is a constant target. it’s his biggest asset and liability. something like MFW and stepping out of his home is also expected to attract all kinds of attention. He is aware of that.
“His faults are accepted as the necessary complement to his merits. It is still possible to discuss his place in art, and the adulation of his admirers is perhaps no less capricious than the disparagement of his detractors; but one thing can never be doubtful, and that is that he had genius. To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist; and if that is singular, I am willing to excuse a thousand faults.”
this is in the POV of the narrator, describing the artist he is writing a book about, Charles Strickland. the message of this quote is similar to the one i mentioned above. xz is not perfect and people, specifically his fans should accept that. it’s what makes him more real. through his wins and losses, he is still xiao zhan.
“It is a salutary discipline to consider the vast number of books that are written, the fair hopes with which their authors see them published, and the fate which awaits them. What chance is there that any book will make its way among that multitude? And the successful books are but the successes of a season. Heaven knows what pains the author has been at, what bitter experiences he has endured and what heartache suffered, to give some chance reader a few hours’ relaxation or to while away the tedium of a journey. And if I may judge from the reviews, many of these books are well and carefully written; much thought has gone to their composition; to some even has been given the anxious labour of a lifetime. The moral I draw is that the writer should seek his reward in the pleasure of his work and in release from the burden of his thoughts; and, indifferent to aught else, care nothing for praise or censure, failure or success.”
this next passage makes me think of the projects he has done and what it must feel like for him. there are a lot of dramas/movies that come out every year and what we repeatedly hear from xz is that he only wishes to bring good works. something people will enjoy and appreciate— never mind the popularity that comes with it. he just finished filming a big project LOCH which i can only imagine is so stressful to him. and now is working on another historical drama.
he is someone who immerses himself in the character and once it’s done, it must be a huge weight off his shoulder. like what is said — seek reward in the pleasure of work and in release from the burden of his thoughts.
“Then, what in God’s name have you left her for?’
‘I want to paint.’
I looked at him for quite a long time. I did not understand. I thought he was mad. It must be remembered that I was very young, and I looked upon him as a middle-aged man. I forgot everything but my own amazement.
‘But you’re forty.’
‘That’s what made me think it was high time to begin.’
i think this one is pretty self explanatory, how he started in the entertainment circle a little bit later in his life. compared to his peers. but the answer was simple to him as it was with Strickland, in his case, “i want to sing.”
‘I tell you I’ve got to paint. I can’t help myself. When a man falls into the water it doesn’t matter how he swims, well or badly: he’s got to get out or else he’ll drown.”
this message seems similar to the one quoted on the vlog about about the rivers and small streams. in this one, it emphasizes how one should not be afraid to take the small step of “swimming badly” in hopes that someday they will wade the waters more efficiently.
“But here was a man who sincerely did not mind what people thought of him, and so convention had no hold on him; he was like a wrestler whose body is oiled; you could not get a grip on him”
If there was something in this book the describes XZ so perfectly — it is this one. I think he is not devoid of over thinking about what people say or being a people pleaser. but in recent times, i am seeing a change in him and how he is more calm. a freedom in the way he speaks, the truths he is no longer holding back. he is not afraid to be different anymore.
which led to that GUCCI outfit. LOL! 🤣🤣🤣
‘Look here, if everyone acted like you, the world couldn’t go on.’
‘That’s a damned silly thing to say. Everyone doesn’t want to act like me. The great majority are perfectly content to do the ordinary thing.”
so true. a great majority wouldn’t and couldn’t do what he does. just looking at the chapters in the vlog, from going to a distant place and dealing with the MGW chaos. after that, being only afforded a small time to decompress and sit. to enjoy the sunset. that’s what his life is.
“I don’t pretend to be a great painter’, he said. ‘I’m not a Michael Angelo, no, but I have something. I sell. I bring romance into the homes of all sorts of people. Do you know, they buy my pictures not only in Holland, but in Norway and Sweden and Denmark? It’s mostly merchants who buy them, and rich tradesmen. You can’t imagine what the winters are like in those countries, so long and dark and cold. They like to think that Italy is like my pictures. That’s what they expect. That’s what I expected Italy to be before I came here.”
i would guess this is how he sees his work. he never claimed to be the best, you can see that with how he always mentions wanting to be better. he wants to give the people a positive view of life. which i can clearly see from the vlogs even, makes you wanna go where he visited.
“A man’s work reveals him. In social intercourse he gives you the surface that he wishes the world to accept, and you can only gain a true knowledge of him by inferences from little actions, of which he is unconscious, and from fleeting expressions, which cross his face unknown to him. Sometimes people carry to such perfection the mask they have assumed that in due course they actually become the person they seem.”
another one that i think describes xz. his little actions that we see reveal his true self —- the gentle, funny and dorky xiao zhan which is a contrast to the character he sometimes has to portray. it’s when we talk about his duality, the way he was posing and “game face on” for GUCCI but when he did the interview you can see the dorky xiao zhan 😂
there are times that xiao zhan merges some of the qualities of his celebrity side and i think it’s perfectly person. it is a huge part of his life, and the way i see it, his experiences only make him a better person.
“I have an idea that some men are born out of their due place. Accident has cast them amid certain surroundings, but they have always a nostalgia for a home they know not. They are strangers in their birthplace, and the leafy lanes they have known from childhood or the populous streets in which they have played, remain but a place of passage.
They may spend their whole lives aliens among their kindred and remain aloof among the only scenes they have ever known.
Perhaps it is this sense of strangeness that sends men far and wide in the search for something permanent, to which they may attach themselves. Perhaps some deep-rooted atavism urges the wanderer back to lands which his ancestors left in the dim beginnings of history.
Sometimes a man hits upon a place to which he mysteriously feels that he belongs.
Here is the home he sought, and he will settle amid scenes that he has never seen before, among men he has never known, as though they were familiar to him from his birth.
Here at last he finds rest.”
read that again. it’s a lovely way to put into words what i imagine is something that not only xz goes through. we know what kind of environment and country he lives in, i’m not trying to get political but you get the point. being a celebrity or public personality like him is vastly different from how it is with the rest of the world. i have always admired how he handles it all with grace, how he he willingly accepts the responsibility and burden of being who he is. and that’s why i was also surprised by his answer when asked about a parallel world and he answers about a superpower where he can make it possible to have no disputes in the world. being in that place, with lots of people around, from different parts of the world probably made him think more about this topic. aside from eating pizza and being his usual beautiful self, he was thinking about some serious issues too.
chapter 1 was about going to a distant place but not really, there was something in that place and experience that feels like a home he longs for.
alternate explanation, this can also mean him living his life as a graphic designer, and then spreading his wings into a different industry — being the place he has sought. but considering the time this was released and where he is now at life, i’m thinking it’s more of the former.
so busy yearning for the moon that he never saw the sixpence at his feet. 🪙
this imagery at the end of the vlog + the coin he holds + the quote fits so well together. the way i see it, XZ is doing both. he appreciates the moon, he looks up to it but he doesn’t miss to see and hold the sixpence. it’s why he is holding on to it, in some, it was even rolling on it’s own towards him. and it’s not just the proverbial sixpence. he is seeing and appreciating his surroundings —- the egg he ate, laundry, bike etc.
as a fan, this is actually comforting to me. the book itself is not the happiest, which makes sense cause xz prefers melodramatic to downright tragic stories. but it shows a realistic view of what some goes through to pursue their dreams. it’s not as glamorous as what we see on tv or the internet. but the end of the vlog, shows that xz is keeping a balance. he is not just busy looking up at the moon— he is also living his life.
-END.
I first knew about the connection of the vlog to the book via 辉夜姬不叽 and i got hooked into writing something about it and reading the source material. i also liked @resonancewitness interpretation of the vlog, particularly the lines in starry starry night.
#xiao zhan#halfway through making this i thought about why i made it in the first place lol i just got so fixated#reading the book was lowkey therapeutic for me cause it has some good passages about love too ^^#i can’t believe xz made me read book lol thank you xiao laoshi 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️#i absolutely love the intellectual hipster side of xz never change please

sing a song of sixpence (CWFKB #4)
True Love's kiss fill for @codywanfirstkissbingo (had to write about my favourite fairy tale The Wild Swans <3)
The window groans as Cody pushes it open, the sound barely muffled by the rag stuffed into the hinges, once a decorative cast-off from a larger dress and now sacrificed for the mundane concerns of darkness and warmth. Outside, the moon hangs low in the sky, barely brushing the dark spikes of the trees and the path Cody needs to take is well-illuminated, the occasional smooth stone glowing bright in the moonlight. He doesn’t need them, not now, not after so many years walking the same path.
“Are you out again?” The voice is familiar, but it takes Cody a moment to place it, blinking back into the dappled shadows of the bedroom. A wavering afterimage of his path hovers in front of his gaze and he waits for it to pass before he locks eyes with Rex, his hair already rumpled and his eyes barely open.
Cody nods.
Rex groans, pressing his hands to his eyes and sinking back into the bed. He reaches over, smacking his hand against the mattress until he retrieves Cody’s blanket and pulls it over himself. “How many times are you going to keep this up, Codes?” Rex sighs heavily, the sound verging on a snore. “Stay safe.”
Cody couldn’t answer him, not like this. He can feel every trapped word vibrating in his chest, soil left to grow overgrown and treacherous, but he nods again, and scrambles out of the window. There are a lot of unknowns with this curse, too many in fact for him to ever be sure that he is even helping, but he stays the course regardless. His family had argued over his decision, over his head, to his face, tucked in the small corners of their home when they thought he couldn’t hear them, but Cody is stubborn. He could do this, he could help in this small way, so he doesn’t speak.
Grunts of effort, he is reasonably sure, don’t count, tied in to sobs and gasps, yawns and every other involuntary noise that a body makes, but he hasn’t spoken an intentional word in years. He ducks beneath a tree bough that only caught him at the beginning of his travels back and forth and every so often when he still forgot about it, and pushes his way through a tangle of the undergrowth. The lake is still, perfectly flat and it reflects the moon overhead like a mirror. Cody sinks onto an upturned log. Over the years, he has seen it sink further into the ground, the rapid flash of moss over the surface seeming to bloom and develop infrastructure and revolution in a matter of weeks. He pulls the treated cloth bag out from the hollow next to it and sets to work. His earlier work is clumsy, random inexplicable holes scattered across the surface of the fabric, his stitches ragged and bisecting the uneven colours of the fabric, but he improved. His current shirt is a thing of beauty, the fabric nearly glowing beneath the watchful gaze of the moon and Cody’s stitches are neat and even. One sleeve hangs free and then everything will be complete.
He lowers his head and begins to work.
Sometime later, Cody’s eyes burning and his vision beginning to waver in and out of focus, a distant splash catches Cody’s attention and he looks up across the lake. The ripple meets the shore at the same time, continuing as the swan breaks away from the group and travels towards Cody.
“You came.” Cody hears the words without hearing them, a stray thought emblazoned across the front of his mind, and he grins at the animal as it stumbles onto the shore. There’s a scent of cool water and a lingering bite of salt, the memories of a world so far away it might not exist at all, and Cody nods, holding up the shirt in trembling hands. It doesn’t feel real, being so close and yet still so far.
The swan’s wings flex, power clear in the movement, and the feathers gleam. The curse hadn’t detracted from the man’s beauty, merely transposed it onto a different form. Cody had only met the man once, slumped beneath a tree with blood soaking through his tunic and feathers already beginning to poke through his skin. His hair had been caught between silver and his likely natural red, but his eyes had been clear enough. Cody remembers the clasp of his hand, tight enough to ache, to try and imprint some semblance of his fading humanity onto another person before the curse had overtaken him.
“You’re nearly finished, I— We— Thank you. Thank you for everything.”
Cody lowers his gaze once more, a flush of heat rolling through his cheeks, and pulls his needle through the fabric once, twice, three more times. He bites through the thread, a tiny snap he feels echoing through his mind, and shakes out the shirt, holding it out to the swan. He tips his head to one side, shrugging with an exaggerated rise of his shoulders. Nothing is happening. He finished the task, sewed the shirts, and didn’t speak. He fulfilled the criteria the man had whispered to him, a voice torn between a swan’s call and ragged syllables.
“I don’t…” The swan waddles forward, lowering his head to poke the shirt with his beak. “This should have worked.” He steps forward, stretching out his wings to knock against Cody’s hands as he lowers the shirt.
Grief is heavy and it tears through Cody’s shirt. This should have worked. Was it him, his fault? Had he spoken during his silence and ruined everything?
“Thank you, Cody. For everything.” The swan leans forward, resting his neck against Cody’s shoulders, his wings against Cody’s arms. His feathers are cool beneath Cody’s touch, and he turns his face into the embrace, kissing the top of the swan’s head by way of an apology. It tastes like salt, like tears and sorrow. “Sleep now. I will discuss with the others for a solution.”
Cody, exhausted and hollow, nods, sinking to the ground and curling onto his side. He rolls, facing away from the lake, unable to face them any longer.
He’s awoken by a shout, heard and not thought, sitting upright.
“Cody! It worked!” The man stands at the shore, the remnants of a tattered tunic over his torso and one of Cody’s shirts over the top of it. It fits him well. His grin is bright as the rising sun and he staggers towards Cody, half-hunched forward before he straightens, his legs trembling from the effort. He collapses next to Cody, crawls the final few steps and cups Cody’s face in his hands. “It worked, thank you.”
Behind him, Cody can make out other human forms on the shore, one man sprawled across the ground, his hands splayed towards the sky, and another staggering on legs that he’s determined will hold him up.
Cody swallows, presses his tongue against his lower lip. “Hi.” His voice cracks, barely louder than a whisper.
“Hi, love.”
“Can I kiss you?” Cody asks, carefully picking his way around the words he hasn’t used for years but has wanted to ever since he saw the man in the forest.
“Yes. Yes, please.”
Cody leans forward and kisses him, tastes salt and joy and everything is going to be okay.
