Some gifs I’ve made through this method ( x x x ). these gifs are 60fps only bc i found a user who uploaded the ts file in 60fps. usually you cant get 60fps w/o avisynth. but this is also me saying that if you cant get avisynth or vapoursynth, there are still ways to work around it i think! one of my fav giffers for the longest time didnt use either!! and sharpening and coloring were always on point.~I think pcs can use kmplayer? id look into that if you have a pc~for normal mp4 videos I just use photoshops ‘import video frames to layers’ option (under file in the menubar)! you can use avisynth as well, but for me it takes forever to extract what i want in avisynth (minimum like a minute ish), whereas ps can get the part of the video i want to gif in a couple of seconds. I think it’s self explanatory but basically you find the video you want to extract, find where u want ur gif to start, and for photoshop cs5, you hit the ‘shift’ key and let the part u want giffed in the video play. when youre done u lift the shift key and hit ‘ok’ (idk if it differs for different versions of ps). i extract all!!! frames!! it makes it look smoother too :)

3. Coloring/Sharpening/Cropping/Etc~now this is the step that I can’t really give a tutorial on because honestly it varies for everyone! but i feel that this is the step that a lot of ppl need guidance with (me included) because it is the hardest step, probably because it is so ‘up in the air’ for lack of a better word? there is no one right way of doing it the possibilities are literally endless but here are some tips~Coloring: ~most important rule: don’t whitewash ur gifs!! ~other than that, the world is yours. ~honestly have fun with this part! coloring is something that i haven’t fully learned yet ~i tend to play around mainly with the curves, selective color, hue/saturation, and color balance layers ~you can also download psds other ppl have made (i dont do this myself) and use those! ~also i feel that a lot of the times, the right coloring can make ur gif seem higher quality. coloring can also play a role in reducing gif size if u do it correctly. ~honestly this part is just a lot of experimentation, over the course of a gifset and over the course of time in general. some people find their coloring style easily, but i was not one of those people. ive spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to adjust what layers to get the colors that i want and i think only as of this era ive been able to execute the coloring i had pictured in my mind. so patience is a virtue!!! ~Sharpening: ~ah yes my biggest enemy: sharpening ~first things first, i sharpen my gifs using smart sharpen + topaz ~settings for my smart sharpen are 500%; 0.4 ~check the box that says ‘more accurate’ and i personally remove ‘gaussian blur’ ~some people also use topaz denoise, and/or topaz clean ~ honestly topaz is a lifesaver for me bc it smoothes out a lot of grain that can be introduced via coloring! also!!! it can reduce gif size by a lot!!!!!!!!!!! ~on topaz denoise i hit the ‘light’ setting on the side and adjust the settings accordingly ~idk how to use topaz clean even though I have it, because it refuses to work ~to apply topaz you have to hit ‘flatten frames into layers’ ~some gifs i’ve made with just topaz and no avisynth ( x x x x) ~there are ways to make it look nice without topaz but i’ve forgotten how after i got it ~id duplicate the frame then use smart sharpen and ‘gaussian blur’ under ‘blur’ ~then adjust the opacity levels in some way. ~my settings for the opacity levels aren’t good so i’ll refrain from sharing ~some gifs ive made through this method ( x x ) ~last but not least i’ll bring up avisynth again. avisynth is nice at preserving video quality ~a lot of ppl i know say they don’t even sharpen gifs out of avisynth ~here are some gifs i have made with avisynth + topaz ( x x x x x x x ) ~honestly when it comes to sharpening, im still floundering with it. my sharpening needs a lot of work but, amongst the people who i consider good sharpners, most of them use avisynth, topaz denoise and/or clean, and smart sharpen! so all the resources are here !

~Cropping: ~it’s super important to follow tumblr dimensions otherwise gifs come out looking grainy! even when they’re not ! Interview: 5 questions for fifty-five about AT Internet’s Analytics Suite

fifty-five helps brands to make optimal use of data and technology to develop more relevant, innovative and effective marketing strategies. Which AT Internet functionality is essential in your opinion?

I’d say Explorer, because that’s the entry point for operational data management. It is the first tool used by fifty-five experts when they start an assignment with a client using AT Internet. With Explorer, they have quick and easy access to key metrics of digital business and a macro view of web data and mobile applications. It is a first level of granularity on the global audience, content, and traffic sources, while providing contextualisation of the data.

The other interesting aspect of Explorer is that it responds to very specific issues. In the tourism sector, for example, monitoring cross-sell performance through self-promotion of a product is very simple. It is easy to obtain metrics such as clicks, impressions and cross-sell conversions. To give another example – the analysis of the internal search engine makes it possible to easily find the keywords typed by visitors on a website and quickly identify possible flaws and areas for improvement in a product or service.

The Navigation module is also very relevant for advertisers – who are often looking to follow the navigational routes and analyse all the steps in the visitor’s journey following the home page entry point. Now it is possible to accurately and easily identify throughput rates and leakage points.

Some of our customers ask for user retention analyses, especially those whose business is very app centric. For example, you can find out how many people use an application after it has been downloaded from an app store. Thanks to Explorer‘s user-centric analyses, it is possible to analyse this with retention models. Which tool is particularly suited to advanced data mining?

We mainly use Data Query, the complementary component of Explorer. Its use requires some training, but it is the tool that, in my opinion, makes AT Internet’s Analytics Suite a standout solution! It is reserved for certified users who are familiar with the world of AT Internet and fully understand the nomenclature of sites, dimensions and metrics of the product.

For example, for a client in the media industry, we used Data Query to measure the performance of video content through A/B testing to optimise the user experience. To quantify our tests, we make direct use the AT Internet solution where we recover all the performance of the variants using native connectors (reference to Kameleoon). How does AT Internet’s solution meet very specific business needs?

Analytics has become more democratic in recent years. We can see this at fifty-five because we are receiving an increasing number of requests for training in analytics from cross-functional professions such as product owners, product managers, e-commerce managers, acquisition managers in the media sector and even decision-makers (C-Level). All sectors are in demand, whether they are pure players or traditional players whose main activity is offline.

The Doogee S90 is IP68 rated, thanks to rubber covers over the SIM slot and USB-C port. Bumpers in each corner provide a degree of drop protection, along with the hefty metal rim. Weighing 10.6 ounces (300g), the device measures 6.33 x 3.14 x 0.6 inches (170 x 80 x 15 mm), so it’s a bulky device weighing nearly twice that of some smaller phones. Modular Add-Ons

Doogee has placed a set of electrical contacts on the back of the device and employed a magnetic locking system, allowing add-on modules to be easily attached. It’s incredibly simple to use, and they’re automatically recognised by the system. The modules stay on securely during normal use or in your pocket, but can be pulled off with a little effort. You don’t need any special tools, and the main device doesn’t need to be dismantled. This is the kind of modular approach that could really appeal, so I really hope it’s developed further.

Let’s take a closer look at the current range of modules available.

Battery Pack

Adding around 150g, the 5000mAh battery module effectively doubles the already generous internal 5050mAh battery capacity. It snaps on and immediately begins trickle charging the device. It’s a lot more convenient than lugging around a separate package, and you’re less likely to lose this while camping. The only downside is that you lose the wireless charging feature, as the external battery module itself needs to be charged over USB-C.

Oh, and it turns the Doogee S90 into a massive brick. But if you wanted sleek and sexy, you probably wouldn’t be looking toward the rugged market anyway.

Walkie Talkie

Promising to work with standard walkie talkie frequencies in the range of 400-480Mhz and at an unobstructed range of 10km, the walkie talkie module and accompanying app will be able to operate even without a Wi-Fi or cellular network. Again, it adds a good bit of bulk to the back of the device. Unfortunately the module sent for testing was a prototype, so we were unable to fully test the features. However, this isn’t the first time Doogee has added walkie talkie features to a device, so we’re confident they can deliver.

Gamepad

Not included in our test package, but available in the ultimate reward pledge or to purchase separately, is the gamepad module. This connects over Bluetooth, and is similar if not identical to the G1 gamepad offered with the S70 model. However, I should note that Fortnite is not currently compatible with the device, and even if it were, Gamepads are not currently supported by the game. Other games should be fine.

Night-Vision Camera

If you were conjuring up dreams of using your mobile to navigate in the complete darkness like some kind of super secret agent, I’m afraid that’s not quite the case. The “Night-Vision” camera module is a ultra sensitive wide-angle sensor and lens package, which supposedly amplifies the light 12 times. It’s based on a Sony IMX291 (2mp) sensor, coupled with a 130-degree wide-angle lens.

The operative word is “amplifies”. It does not work in the complete absence of light. There are no infrared LEDs.

Check out the review video for full sample shots from the add-on camera module, but the following side by side comparison should give you an idea of the difference it makes for low-light situations, as well as the distortion from the wide angle lens. This was taken in the early evening with no other lighting; the night-vision camera makes it look like a bright daytime.

It’s quite a noisy image and the focus is fixed, but it’s better than nothing at all which is what you’d usually get in this kind of lighting condition. Whether you’ll find a use for extreme low light, low resolution photography and video is another matter. Personally, I would have much preferred a true infrared night vision mode, for wandering round forests in the dead of night, as one is wont to do.

Built-in Camera Quality

Featuring a now standard 16+8MP regular camera in the base phone, the standout feature for me during testing was “aperture mode”, which is where the secondary sensor is used to identify the foreground subject and artificially add bokeh to the rest of the image. In my experience, claims of a secondary sensor are sometimes fake: the software merely adds a circular blur around the point of focus. In the case of the Doogee S90, it’s clearly making use of that sensor, and does a great job of picking out the subject accurately.

On the image above, you can see a slight error where the algorithm included the bottle underneath the camera body in the section of sharp focus, but in fairness I was trying something deliberately difficult for this test shot. More natural shots worked reliably, like these two beautiful rescue hens:

In standard rear camera mode, photos are passable, but nothing outstanding.

The 8MP front sensor tells a similar story, and is fine for selfies and video chatting.

Antutu scored the device around 132,000—not in the top 50 of current smartphones, but not bad. PCMark (Work 2.0) test was a more respectable 6799. In terms of raw power then, it’s roughly equivalent of a Samsung Galaxy S8, or just below that of the Google Pixel 2.

I was able to run Player Unknown Battlegrounds fine—again, sample footage is in the review video. Unfortunately Fortnite refused to install. General UI interactions, web browsing etc was all as smooth as I could wish for, probably helped by the optimizations in Android 8.1.

In terms of battery life, we managed a solid day and then some (on just the phone, not with the backup battery), with average usage. While this may be shorter than you’d expect from such a large battery, but it’s mainly needed to power that gorgeous big screen. If you took the battery module with you, you’d have no trouble getting through a long weekend of camping. With light usage, two or three days from a single charge would not be unusual.

Should You Buy or Back the Doogee S90?

If the modular approach is something that interests you, and the modules on offer are of use, you’ll save on the final retail price by backing the Kickstarter now. The ultimate bundle, which includes all the current modules shown here as well as the gamepad, is available for $470. Or you can mix and match only the ones you want.

It’s a unique approach and one that I hope they continue to release new modules for. The massive battery and large screen in a rugged package are a great combination. Generally, these mid-range import phones are forgotten about quickly, as the next model is inevitably churned out. Don’t expect to get the next major Android upgrade a year down the line; but perhaps the next Doogee modular phone will be compatible with existing modular upgrades. As with any imported phones, check the frequencies will work with your network before purchasing.

If you’re not interested in any of the modules though, you should look elsewhere. The circuitry needed to interface with those modules add to the cost of the device, so you’ll find better performance per dollar on other devices.

How switching my parents over to Linux saved me a lot of headache and support calls

During me being at my parents over the holidays (Christmas 2017) I had the usual IT-support stuff to do, that always happens to tech savvy kids when they are back at home.

As I am a happy Linux user for over a decade now, I asked myself if it would be a good idea to switch my parents away from Win 10 to a GNU/Linux (I will call it only Linux during the rest of the post. Sorry Richard ;) ) based system.

I did that and now 2 years later I still think it was a good idea: I have the peace of mind, that their data is kinda safe and they also call me less often regarding any technical issues with the system. (Yes, Win 10 confused them more than Ubuntu does).

In the following I would like to describe this ongoing journey and how you can follow my example.

Please keep in mind, that this setup is my very own solution and it is likely, that you need to tweak it to your needs. Disclaimer: I do not care about "FOSS only" or something.

Preparation

Background about my parents computer usage: They mainly use their machine for email and web stuff (shopping, social media, online banking,...) and are not heavily into hardware intense gaming or so.

As my parents already used a lot of Free Software as their daily drivers (Thunderbird, Firefox) I did not had to do a big preparation phase. But still I switch them (still on their Win 10) to LibreOffice so that they could get used to it, before changing the whole system.

That is my first big advice for your:

Try to not overwhelm them with to much new interfaces at once. Use a step by step solution.

So first of all, keep them on their current system and help them to adapt to FLOSS software that will be their main driver on the Linux later on.

So two steps for preparation here:

1) Sit down with your folks and talk trough their daily usage of their computer (Please be not so arrogant to think you already know it all)

2) Try to find software replacements for their daily drivers, that will work flawlessly later on the Linux machine. The ones I would recommend are:

Firefox as Browser (and maybe Email if they prefere webmail)

Thunderbird for Emails

GIMP for Image Editing

VLC as Media Player

LibreOffice instead of MS Office

So as you now did find out and setup replacements for the proprietary Windows software, you should give them time to adapt. I think a month would be suitable. (FYI: I got the most questions during this time, the later switch was less problematic)

Switching over

So your parents now got used to the new software and that will help you to make them adapt easier to the new system, as they now only have to adapt to the new OS interface and not additionally also to a lot new software interfaces.

Do yourself a favor and use standard Ubuntu

I know there are a ton of awesome Linux distros out there (Btw. I use Arch ;)) but my experience during this journey brought me to the conclusion, that the standard Ubuntu is still the best. It is mainly because, all the drivers work mostly out of the box and the distro does a lot automatically. (Because of that, my parents where able to install a new wireless printer without even calling me...beat that Gentoo ;))

On top of that: The Ubuntu community multilingual and open for newbies.

The journey until Ubuntu

Until Ubuntu we tried different other distros, all suffering at some point (Please bear in mind, that this are all awesome projects and for myself they would work 100%, but for no technical people as my parents a distro just needs to be real solid):

1) Chalet Os as it was promoted as most lookalike to Windows. As it is based on XFCE it is lightweight, but the icons and styles differ all over the UI. So you get confused because the settings icon always looks different, depending where in the system you are.

2) Elementary OS because I love the UI myself. No clue why, but my parents never got warm with it. It is just a bit to far away from what they are used to.

3) Solus OS has again a more windows looking ui and it worked better for my parents. But after all you have to say Solus is just not there yet. The package manager has to less packages and whenever you have a problem it is super hard to find a solution on the net. Plus: The UI crashed at least once a day. (IMO a driver problem with the machine, but still after hours of work we did not find a solution.)

4) Finally Ubuntu](https://www.ubuntu.com/) and that now works nice and smooth (For over 8 month now)

Nuke and pave

So you selected the distro and are now able to nuke and pave the machine. I think I do not have to explain in-depth how to do that, just two important things:

Backup all you parents data to an external hard drive (Copy the complete C: drive)

Write down upfront what software you want to install and make sure you also backup the configuration and data of those

**Cheating: ** If you want to amaze with the new system even more and the machine is still on a HDD, replace it with a SSD, so the Linux system feels even better and faster ;)

Configuration

After you installed the distro, do a complete configuration. (Yes, go trough every setting and tweak it if needed)

Now install the software your folks already used on their Windows machine and make sure it is configured in the exact same way as it was on the old system! (That will help a lot in keeping the moral up, because then their is already something that feels familiar to them)

I found, that it is best to place the shortcuts of the applications your parents use the most in bar on the left side on Ubuntu, so they find them easily

Sit down with your parents and ask them, what data the need from the old system and copy only that over. Hereby you clean up the file system by not copying over the old crap they did not use for ages and if they find out later, that there is more data they need it is stored on the backup drive.

Introduce them to the new system

After the configuration and setup is now complete you need to allocate some time for introducing them to the new system. You know you parents best so do it in the way the like it.

For me the following routine worked best:

0) Explain it to them in two individual sessions (as mostly one of them is more tech savvy then the other one and so both have the chance to ask you individually)

1) Shutdown the machine

2) Let him/her start the machine

3) Tell her/him to try to do their daily business and whenever questions come up explain how to solve the issue (Never touch the mouse or keyboard! If you take it over, it is very likely that you will be to fast)

4) Stop after 60 minutes and if there are still questions do another session the next day (Imagine yourself learning something completely new to you - maybe Chinese - are you able to concentrate more than an hour?)

Some topics I would recommend you to cover during the introduction:

How to setup a new wifi connection (especially if the machine is a laptop)

How to install new software

How to setup a new printer/scanner

How to print/scan

How to restore deleted files

How to get data from/to a USB-stick or mobile device

How to shutdown the machine (not that easy to find on Ubuntu)

Ongoing improvements

So normally now the system should work as intended and if you are lucky it saves you a lot of problems in the future. In this section I will give you some more recommendations, that helped to make the experience even better:

Linux does always ask you for your password if you are doing something that could deeply harm the system. So I told my parents: Whenever that dialog (I showed it to them) pops up, they should keep in mind, that they could destroy the whole machine with this operation and if they want they can call me first.

Show them the app store and tell them, whatever they install from there is save (so no viruses or something) and they can install everything they want as long it is from there. It makes fun to find new cool software and games, so help them to experience that fun too :D

Backups! As it is really easy with Linux you should do a automatic daily/hourly backup of their complete home folder. I use borg for that. (I plan to to write an in-depth blog post about borg in the future, it will be linked here if it is done). So now, whenever my parents call me and tell me that they deleted something or that the machine does not boot anymore I can relax and tell them, that we can restore all there data in a matter of minutes....you can't image how good that makes me feel.

It is not FOSS, but I did install google chrome as it was the easiest for watching netflix and listening to spotify.

I would recommend installing some privacy plugins and stuff into the browser your parents use, so you get them even saver.

If you have some software that does not have a good replacement, try to use wine for it. Worked well with MS Office 2007. (Sorry LibreOffice, but you still can't compete with MS here). PlayOnLinux did help me a lot with the wine setup

If possible activate the automatic update and installation of all security updates.

Conclusion

For me the switch made a lot of sense, as my parents are not heavy technical users of there systems. Should yours be into Photoshop, video editing or gaming I do not think it will be so easy to do the switch over, as Linux and its software is still not a good competitor in this areas.
