Hi, you don´t know me and I swear that I just tried to make a simple comment in ao3 like a normal person but I ended up writing 5192 words and I couldn´t post all of this in the platform so...yeah. 

Okay, so I don´t really know if you will read this comment or if you will continue this series (I really hope you do because this series is basically my religion) but regardless of all that, I just read the whole thing and I realized that I needed to write a comment to make you know how utterly and madly in love I am with what you created. I want to say that this really started just as a comment but at some point I honestly lost all focus and I just started to fangirl so hard that I´m embarrassed of myself, I started throwing my opinions, headcanons, and impressions of the characters and this ended up being a mess, so you can just skip this seven pages and read the last paragraph hahaha, I really hope this is not as annoying as I think it is.

So first of all I want to apologize because I know this whole comment will be a mess, English is not my first language and I love this fanfic so much that I can´t even put together two sentences so I just really hope this whole babbling make sense. The first time I realized what this was about I screamed, soukoku is my otp and I can´t begin to explain how much I love them and how special they are for me, and to be able to read them in one of the universes I adore the most? It was like a dream come true but at the same time I was kind of scared cause I´m not really a fan of most of the crossovers that have been written here, however as soon as I started with this I knew I have found gold.  

Your writing is absolutely divine, it stirred memories of an eleven year old me reading harry potter and wishing I was there, it felt like going home but better because I don´t just care for the characters, I LOVE every single one of them. There are so many things to be impressed with this works, so many things I want to say, so many praises I want to give but the thing that really left me breathless were the characters, how you write them? Is an art, they feel complex, they feel real, they feel human. I laugh with the characters, I cry with them, I got angry with them and screamed at them and I can´t praise you enough for that. Actually I want to stop in this part, I already loved this characters with all my soul so I´m always subjective when I read fanfiction, I always care for the characters regardless of how they are written just because they are dazai and chuuya but what you have done here?  is impressive and wonderful and amazing because this is one of the very very few works in which I don´t care just for Asagiri characters, I care for YOUR characters, I love the characters that YOU have created. Don’t misunderstand me, all of your characters are canon compliant, the way you manage to respect the characterizations is probably one of the bigger reasons I´m so deeply in love with this works, you have written my favorite dazai of all the dazais I´ve ever read and the one I consider more in character but what I admire the most? What truly leaves me speechless?  is how you make this characters canon compliant and still manage to make them grow and develop. If canon chuuya and dazai were transported to Hogwarts at that age, this is exactly they way I think they would act like. I want to tell you how much I admire you cause I know that neither chuuya nor dazai are easy characters to write, both of them are extremely complex specially if you are writing about them in an au, and I´m completely amazed of how you did it. They are tridimensional characters, they feel so so human and it´s so easy to love them. Every single thing in this au is so clever and amazingly done, it´s pretty obvious how much effort you put in this because everything is so well thought. I think one of the most intelligent decisions was to have this story narrated by Chuuya because he really is the perfect protagonist (better that harry in my opinion), he is so lovable and relatable and just a wonderful character to read. I love how he feels so real, he is intelligent and he has seen things that no kid should´ve seen, he is resilient, but he still is vulnerable, he is struggling with humanity, and with no having memories and then out of nowhere he is in this world full of magic in which he finds incredible people and he finds a home with them. I love how he is brave, and loyal to death, honest and he cares so damn much but at the same time I love how deeply flawed he is, chuuya is still chuuya, he is bad tempered and impulsive, he´s not really good with feelings and he gets scared and sometimes he doesn´t know how to communicate but he is there and he is trying, one of the reasons that it´s so easy to get into the story it´s because we have the best protagonist we could ask for. Now I want to make a (huge) parenthesis to talk about how absolutely insane is your writing, you are literally what every author refers to when they talk about “show not tell” one of my favorite scenes not just from fanfiction but from all the books I´ve ever read it’s the scene after Dazai is petrified. I think about that scene constantly and I still think it´s a masterpiece. Chuuya relationship with dazai is so damn incredible (I´m going to talk about this later) but it´s also difficult, I´m gonna make a little character study of chuuya because your character is so good that I really want to fangirl about him, of course this is just my perspective and I could be wrong but okay, chuuya is twelve, he has never been so close with someone and from my perspective I don’t think he has sorted out his feeling for dazai yet.  I think he knows that he cares for him so much more than he should, I think he knows that dazai is special to him in a way that no one is, he knows that his trust for dazai is on a whole different level, and he is clearly PINING (Even though I don´t think he has realized). From our point of view is so obvious that he loves him but for him? It isn´t that obvious. He can´t even explain his relationship with him, he knows that dazai is the closest person to him but he still feels reluctant to call him a friend (I think it´s because a part of him knows that what he feels for dazai is bigger than that, that his feelings for him are completely different from his feelings for kunikida, tachihara or tanizaki but I´m just theorizing) and I think it´s also because dazai is a lot sometimes, he is annoying and cunning and whiny and difficult so the normal response would be to be annoyed for him, right? And he is but at the same time he still likes him, so I feel like chuuya doesn´t know what to do with all those feelings and dazai doesn´t make it easy and he doesn´t know what dazai feels for him, so he tries to act like he doesn´t care that much, like he isn´t really affected even though he clearly is. This makes this whole thing better because:

a)       Is completely in character with chuuya

b)      Is perfectly in character for EVERY 12yo (really I acted just like this when I was his age)

c)       Makes this so much more entertaining and funny to read.

The best thing is that chuuya doesn´t act this way for the others, he actually wants to trick himself into thinking that he doesn´t care, in conclusion, nakahara chuuya in an unreliable narrator and I LIVE for that. So that scene after Dazai is petrified is amazing in every sense of the word because he knows that he won´t sleep, he knows that he is feeling too much and for us the readers is pretty clear that he is a mess, but he still tries to act like he doesn´t feel like falling into pieces. That conversation with kouyou is the best thing in the world. I LOVE that he can´t admit that he is feeling sad or scared, even in his mind he can´t admit it so he copes with anger because he can manage that. He says that he is pissed,  the best thing is that we are in his mind and even then chuuya tries to act like he is fine but the narration makes pretty damn clear that he is not fooling anyone. Kouyou knows that chuuya is fighting tears, and we know it too because the narration says it in a really subtle way.

“He took a deep breath and swallowed down the irritating lump in his throat” “He chewed his lip and breathed through his nose, trying to settle his racing heart” Is mentioned but chuuya doesn´t really stop to think about it because he is too busy acting like he is just angry. This whole thing makes the character more real, more interesting and a whole lot more complex because we can see the layers in him.

Here we have an actual paragraph of chuuya lying to himself: “Chuuya squeezes his eyes shut for a moment to repel the dry stinging threatening to give way tears, which was stupid because he wasn´t sad or afraid” and how he gets angry when he got called out “Chuuya wiped at his eyes, furious at them for betraying something he didn´t want to admit he was feeling”

And then we have Queen Kouyou who KNOWS.

“It´s not as if you´re completely honest with your emotions either, lad” Honestly I love how she knows how much they care for each other, how she clearly sees the mutual pining and how they are struggling with their emotions because they are kids, because neither of them have had feelings like this before and they are so emotional constipated it hurts but even with that she doesn’t say anything to chuuya, she knows that Chuuya has to figure that in his own, she knows that he still isn´t ready to aknowledge or face his feelings so she is just there to guide him and listen to him and honestly? SHE IS THE REAL QUEEN and I can´t begin to explain how much I love her.

I made all that gigantic mess to say that I love the way you narrate things, how even with out making it obvious we know what the characters are feeling and honestly? That´s fucking good writing. The way you make me feel everything the characters are feeling is a gift and I know that a lot of writers would kill to have that ability. This scene will forever be special for me, you really made something incredible there. And it´s not the only scene, the scene in the third book in which he tries to convince himself that he is not worried for dazai but he still looks for him when the dementors appear, because dazai is his safe place and also because if he feels danger his first instinct is to be with dazai so he can protect him too, or I really love how he immediately realized that dazai is not as clingy as always and that he is maintaining his physical distance and even when he never says it IT´S SO DAMN CLEAR HOW MUCH THAT IS BUGGING HIM. He is so annoyed but he can´t say it so he just acts like he isn´t. And that moment in the second book in which he screamed at dazai that he wanted him to stay lives in my mind rent free but I´m going to talk about this scene later.

I don´t really want to talk about Dazai because this clearly isn´t a comment anymore and its more of an essay with lots of fangirling and believe me, I can make a WHOLE character study from your Dazai because he is bloody brilliant and the best one I´ve read so far, I´m going to summarize this as much as I can. HE IS AMAZING. I think Dazai is the most difficult character to write because he is a contradictory character. I love lots of fanfiction but at the end most of the time I feel like Dazai´s personality is completely different from the canon and I get it, to write such a difficult character must be a nightmare. Most of the fanfics I´ve read basically portray him as this cold, lethal mafia boss that is completely whipped by chuuya to the point were he kind of resembles to every single male lead in every generic YA novel or go to the opposite with dazai being a massive and cruel asshole to the point that I just want to shot him or this  goofy character and I think the difficult part is that he can be all those things but it isn´t everything he is. And you found the perfect balance, and from my perspective he is just perfect, he is so complex and full of layers. He feels bad and kind of hollow and just like chuuya he is struggling with his humanity (Exactly like in canon), people call him “the demon kid” I don´t think that he really thinks of himself as just a kid, he is constantly bored but when he finds something that catch his interest he can´t let go, he doesn´t care for a lot of people but when he does he would kill and die for that people. He is brilliant and funny, and so charismatic that even when you want to slap him you can´t help but love him (again, just like canon Dazai) he is also dramatic and whiny but he still is cunning, and a liar and manipulative and he can be really cruel when he wants to be, he is even worse dealing with emotions than chuuya and I can´t even begin to address how much I adore him, he is so in character that every time I read him I want to cry of joy.

“He is definitely the type to freeze up and self destruct when he gets scared. Thinks too much and gets paranoid too” THAT WHOLE STATEMENT IS DAZAI, RIGHT THERE, YOU JUST DESCRIBED HIM SO WELL THAT I LEGIT SCREAMED THE FIRST TIME I READ IT. When he recollected the slugs and gave them to chuuya in Christmas and at the end of the first book? Also completely in character, how he always is there teasing chuuya and being ridiculous clingy but the moment he feels vulnerable he panics and try to put as much distance as possible, how he is so protective because people always leave him, how he is really possessive of chuuya and try to keep all his attention centered in himself it´s actually canon. 15 yo dazai did exactly that. I love that even if he is possessive with chuuya it´s pretty clear that he doesn´t see him as an object, he loves chuuya (even though I´M PRETTY SURE he hasn´t realized, honestly at this point I can physically feel his pining and even with that he is even more emotional stupid than chuuya so I think its gonna be a loooooong time before he realizes about his own feelings) chuuya is his partner and he worries for him so much that he doesn´t know what to do with himself, he gets scared by his own feelings and ends up acting like an ass. your dazai is the best thing I´ve ever read in my whole life. I love your chuuya, but damn, I would die for your dazai. And once again I want to scream about  how impressive it is that even when the story is being told by chuuya, we still get a good idea of what´s happening with dazai and what he is feeling, he is evolving and he also keeps getting better as a character and again its amazing cause he isn´t the one narrating, but he is still so damn well done? I also LOVE the delicacy in how you are talking about his mental health. So, this is really personal but I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and I really can relate with your dazai, I love the way you write about it, dazai in this au is young he is still not the depressed and actively suicidal person of canon, I don´t know if in this au he is going to get to that point but the 13 yo dazai who actively looks for dangerous situations without care for his life is an incredible way to showing that dazai is not precisely healthy. I love his coping mechanisms, how first he acts all happy with fake smiles and try to change topic, when that doesn´t work he becomes an ass to try to push people away and when that also fails he ends up avoiding the person. Your dazai is so fucking real and I love him with all my soul.

All the characters in this series are amazing, I have already talked a little bit about Kouyou but she is incredible, the best teacher in the world and my queen, the friendship between yosano, ranpo, louisa and Poe is everything I needed in life. Yosano and Ranpo betting on chuuya´s relationship with dazai is one of the things I love the most in this whole au because they know too but they are jerks who just are there betting when skk is going to realize and I´M LIVING FOR THAT.  The chaotic energy of ranpo is so entertaining to read. Tachihara is so well done, how much he admires and cares for chuuya, how he is really jealous of dazai and how he doesn´t know how to act about it,  odasaku is flawless and I really like ango, tanizaki and kunikida.  I love your Akutagawa and atsushi with every part of my self.

Now that I talked about how your writing is evocative, addictive and just wonderful and how I would die for your characters I want to talk about the relationships because OMG I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! Let´s start with the one between dazai and chuuya. Their relationship is so heartwarming and my heart swells with so much love every time I think about them. I love how their relationship feels so natural from the very beginning, it just feels right. My favorite thing about it it´s that even though it´s natural is not easy. Their relationship is complicated just like them. They are perfectly imperfect. They are exactly what soukoku stands for, they are partners, they push the other to be better, they challenge each other, they put the other out of their comfort zone, truly “only a diamond can polish a diamond” they are opposites in almost every way and that´s how it is supposed to be, it´s because of that that they are able to compliment the other so well but that also means that in many many ways their relationship is also a mess. They clash a lot, they don´t always understand each other. One of my favorite things is how chuuya feels kind of insecure around odasaku because odasaku is always calm and collected, he just understands dazai and it seems like he does it easily while he struggles all the time. I love chuuya exactly because of that, chuuya is not the kind of person who just understands and that´s okay and in many ways I think  that´s exactly what Dazai needs. Chuuya won´t just understand, he will tell him when he is acting like an idiot, he will tell him when is time to fucking stop, he will be there and call him out when dazai is too afraid to face things. One of my favorite things is that how they get mad, that they don´t always like each other but they still love each other. How even when it´s difficult they want to be together, how at the end of the day after the fights and bickering they know that the other is gonna be there, that they are not alone and what is most beautiful than that? They are kids that grew up in the most horrible situations. Chuuya was alone, without memories, without family, he didn´t have anything, on the other side there was dazai who grew up with a slimy and horrible person who constantly tries to manipulate him and use him at his convenience, he never had a homemade food, he was empty and hollow and they were so lonely and then this kids find each other. I love how messy their relationship is. Is difficult to figure your feelings when you are a teenager and for them? It´s a lot harder, they never had anyone who taught them what it was to be loved, they grew up in a horrible world, they are terribly emotional constipated, they can´t fucking communicate to save their lives (Also a very canon thing), they have unhealthy coping mechanisms and apart from all of that they are also opposites in almost every way of course they are going to clash, of course they get mad, of course they don´t know how to fix things, this is a first for both of them but they are trying. I love how even if chuuya hasn´t realize the depth of his feelings for dazai, he still is very conscious that he choose dazai, that he could´ve trust yosano, kunikida, tachihara or someone else with his story but he trusted dazai, he choose to trust dazai, he choose to be his partner and dazai did the same for him. They are in this together even when sometimes they drive each other crazy.

The scene after Louisa is petrified is one of my favorites because I think it perfectly portrays their relationship. That was the first scene in which chuuya truly was angry with dazai and it wasn´t about dazai being an ass or doing things purposely to get chuuya mad, actually he didn´t do anything wrong and he is confused because this time he really doesn´t know where he went wrong. I love that chuuya also knew that dazai didn´t do anything bad but he still was angry because he couldn´t help it. They faced a situation and they act differently, dazai was being rational and doing what he thought was the best, chuuya knows that but he was scared and he needed dazai by his side in that moment, he didn´t want rationality. In that fight neither of them did anything wrong, they just had different reactions and that´s something that happens, I love how we know for sure that chuuya loves dazai but sometimes he still needs time away from him so he walked with louisa and ranted about dazai with her and I think it´s the same for dazai, of course chuuya is definitely not as difficult as him to be with but he also needs his time alone (we know that from what he says about he walking at night because he can´t sleep) or with ango or odasaku. I love how even if neither of them know what they are feeling or doing, they are so into each other and oh my god they are pining so hard.  They are still kids, there isn´t any real physical attraction yet, they aren´t in the point of “being in love” in the traditional more adult way but they already love each other so much and it really hits me how we know that just from the narrative, specially in chuuya´s case. He won´t say it but he is hyper aware of Dazai, he always notices when dazai is smiling and the he starts smiling too, he knows when dazai is giving a fake smile, and when he is tense or sad or angry. He tries his best to learn more of dazai and it´s pretty obvious that he treasures the little things he has learned about him even if it´s something as simple as his favorite color. I love how they look for each other touch even when neither of them have a lot experience with physical contact. I totally imagine them like one of those couples that are touching each other all the time in the future and you know the worst part? I don´t think anyone will be surprised. Dazai is already all over chuuya most of the time (except in this book and I also want to know why) they have holden each other hands and wrists, they lean into the other, they have cuddled to sleep, they have hugged and held each other and that always makes me feel all giddy inside. AND THE TRUST, the inhuman trust that characterize soukoku is right there and it has me sobbing.

So again, this is just my point of view and I can be totally wrong, but from my perspective is so funny to see them pining without them knowing that they are. I read “Chuuya Nakahara and the Time that Doesn't Exist” and Dazai was pining so hard from the very first moment (I mean, I don´t blame him. Chuuya truly is the most beautiful person on earth). Once I read your comment about how chuuya is pining for dazai but at that point of the story was just a tree while dazai´s pining was an entire forest and I CAN TOTALLY SEE THAT, but at the same time I headcanon that even if Dazai is the one pining harder, he is also the most oblivious about his own feelings? But I don´t know maybe he is already completely aware of his feelings for chuuya and I´m just making a mess of things hahaha. I love that chuuya kind of knows but at the same time he doesn´t, his denial is so strong that he can´t even think of that but at the same time we know that at least deep, deep, deeeeep down he kind of knows and we have the funniest most relatable reactions everytime someone even suggest that they feel more than friendship and he is just there choking with things, blushing and desperately trying to change the topic. I swear those scenes are my favorite ones, I´m always there laughing my ass off and wishing I was with yosano and ranpo to bet about skk love life.

JUST LOOK AT HIM, HE IS A MESS, OMG I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, MY SWEET STUPID CHILD IN DENIAL.

Soukoku relationship in this au is everything I needed in life to be happy, thank you for creating it.

And the relationship between chuuya and kouyou? *Chef kiss* is so damn good, I love how they deeply care for each other, and how she is always there to help him when he needs her, I love how she even stands for dazai in his own way and how she is literally the best adult in existence. I love how she is always teaching chuuya things and wants the better for him, so she is kind of strict but at the same time she is spoiling him. I love chuuya relationship with Arthur and paul, they have this parental kind of relationship, they obviously care and like chuuya a lot and Arthur is there acting like the overprotective father for chuuya (sometimes acting like a judgemental asshole) and how chuuya thinks of their house as the closest thing to a home have me in tears. I love dazai´s relationship with odasaku and ranpo and how much they care for him, I love that oda is always there to listen to him not matter what. I love chuuya and tanizaki´s friendship, I adore shin soukoku relationship even though we haven´t seen much of them but it´s already amazing. We see bitter, angsty Akutagawa following dazai like is his light vs the sweet precious atsushi and how they bicker and god I´M EMO FOR THEM, I LOVE THEM. Let´s talk about ranpo, yosano, louisa and Edgar friendship again because their chaotic energy is everything I asked for, they love each other and are there being brilliant and funny and I WOULD DIE FOR THEM.

I also want to make a point of how much I love your dialogues, because I FUCKING LOVE THEM WITH ALL MY SOUL. I want to fangirl about more scenes, I want to talk about the unicorn and their fist hug, I want to talk about chuuya first birthday, I want to talk about the Christmas with Rimbaud and Verlaine, and about the scenes in the infirmary in the third book, I want to talk about my theories about the plot and about chuuya and corruption but at this point this thing is scary and I already look like a crazy person so I will stop here.

This started as a comment, this clearly isn´t a comment anymore and it turned into an essay with character studies and relationship studies and probably me overanalyzing things, I hope this whole thing isn´t as crazy as I think it is. But if you want to take something from this whole thing is that you are an amazing writer, that you are creative and have a wonderful, startling style, that you make characters and relationships so incredible that there´s a person who is willing to write seven pages about them, because they are inspiring and breathtaking, that there are scenes that will live with me forever. This fanfic is everything I would ask for, I would love to see you continue the series, there are still lots of things I want to see, a lot of characters I want to meet but if this is the last one you are willing to write (even though I really hope it´s not the case) I just want to thank you for creating something as amazing as this. Thank you for sharing this amazing content with us and if you decide to continue the series then I will be right there, screaming like crazy and fangirling really hard.

Rules & Preferences

I know this looks daunting, but most of it is basic stuff.

1. I don’t rp via Tumblr messenger or any other messaging platform.

I like to go back and reread my threads through the reblogs. Plus, I prefer to keep all of my writing public.

2. No NSFW or smut.

Both mun and most muses are 18+, but NSFW themes will not be explicitly written on this blog.

3. We do NOT have to be mutuals to start a thread.

If you want to plot, but I happen to not be following you, by all means, let’s talk! Just shoot me a message on Tumblr or any of these platforms, and let’s plan something!

On another note, even of we do have an active thread, I may not be following you. This is not a personal thing directed towards you. I typically don’t follow blogs that regularly write NSFW threads, but I will still interact with them in an SFW thread without following them. I also might unfollow someone who does not cut their posts, and they clog up my dash. Again, not a personal thing, just trying to keep my dash clean.

4. You don’t have to follow through with my request to write together.

If I ever message you about plotting, and you’re not interested, just tell me. I’m not going to be offended if you’re not interested in my characters or my style or anything, but I would hope you will be respectful enough to come tell me you’re not interested rather than ignoring my request. 

5. Please be honest with me.

If you’re bored and want to drop a thread, just tell me, and we will let it go - plain and simple, no hard feelings.

6. I reserve the right to drop a thread for any reason.

If I am unable to come up with a reply or feel uncomfortable with the content of our thread, I will come talk to you about dropping it. This is nothing against you as the writer. It is just very stressful for me to force myself to keep up with a thread that I have no interest in or am uncomfortable with. 

7. This is a selective blog.

I have tried being non-selective and semi-selective, but, like I said, forcing myself to write a thread that I have no interest in or am uncomfortable with is very stressful and exhausting. I will be honest (and nice) with you about where I stand on starting a thread when you come to me. I also may not have an idea in that moment, but I could come up with an idea later on that I think would work well with your muse, so a no now does not mean a no forever.

8. My replies can be selective.

Sometimes my muse is stronger for one character or one thread over another. I will keep any threads that I owe replies to in my drafts so I can reply when I feel like I have a good response. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but I will not drop a thread without coming to you to tell you.

9. Do not assume things about my muse(s).

Got a question about my muse? Ask me! Or, better yet, ask them. Please don’t assume something about my muse and act upon that assumption without confirming it first.

10. No godmodding.

This one really should go without having to be said. I’m more lenient with this than I should be, but you writing for my muse is extremely restrictive to my creative process.

11. Read the information about my blog that I provide for you.

I have worked very hard to make sure this blog is easy-to-read and accessible on desktop, the mobile site, AND the mobile app. Please make sure to at least read my rules and the bio of the muse you are interacting with.

12. I am on mobile 98% of the time.

I have found ways to finagle just about everything, so I can do almost everything on mobile that I can do on desktop. However, if your desktop theme is not mobile-friendly, I may not be able to find links and such and will come to you to ask for those before attempting to interact.

13. I have a specific format for my posts.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with how rping on mobile works, when you remove the reblogs on a text post, the first post stays, and everything after that is removed. However, if you remove the reblogs on the computer, all of the posts are removed.

Since I rp on mobile, I use that first post to make a title/header for my threads. This header includes the thread title, the URL of my partner, and the name of their character. Throughout the thread, even when reblogs are removed, the title of the thread will stay on top as the first post. 

If you use desktop and we are writing together, PLEASE do not remove the reblogs from your computer. I am very diligent about keeping threads cut via mobile, so they should not be long posts when they get to you. If you remove the reblogs on your computer, it will remove my title post, and I will have to redo it before we continue our thread.

Other than that, I don’t use any fancy text or icons, but I don’t mind if you do on your own blog. Just don’t delete my title post.

14. I will not write threads in which muses are heavily drinking, smoking, or using drugs.

I will not interact with muses who do any of these things. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable and anxious, especially when it comes to alcohol.

15. I don’t curse, but I don’t care if you do.

Same for my muses. They won’t curse within a thread, but they won’t mind if yours do.

16. I don’t care about your spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes.

I’m a magazine editor irl, and I have a natural affinity for spelling/grammar/punctuation. That being said, I know I make mistakes, and, nine times out of ten, I catch those mistakes and choose not to correct them. This is a hobby for me, so I’m not a stickler for making everything perfect.

17. I try to match length when I can.

Usually my replies are a 1-3 sentences long (One sentence replies being complex sentences), especially when are muses are in an interaction. Long paragraphs can, at times, be daunting to me, but I will always strive to match length.

18. I am the shippiest bean known to man.

If you want to ship with me, let’s talk about it. I want to make sure our muses fit well together so that we can enjoy a nice, meaningful relationship between them.

19. I prefer to plot rather than send in random starters.

This mostly applies to first interactions. I ask a LOT of questions, especially right before I start a new thread, because I want to make sure I understand what you want and how the thread will go. 

20. I do not rp with non-human muses.

I prefer to rp with human muses, especially when starting out with a new partner. I don’t know much about human-animal hybrids or mythical creatures (not that these muses aren’t amazingly-written or valid), and I have a hard time learning and retaining new information about them. If your muse is non-human (demon, vampire, werewolf, witch/wizard, neko, other), and you think you could make a case for them to rp with me, go for it. I’m definitely open to listen and hear what you have to say, but I can’t ensure I will be up for it.

4. ANOTHER TACTICS

The raspberry cake had an extremely positive impact on the mood of a woman who initially was absolutely not happy with us. Well, I’d have said, Emma and I never pushed it and demonstrated her our lack of claims. I don’t mean we wouldn’t try it in the future if anything dangerous for the kid would come out, but we had no moral high ground to do that right now. The adoptive mother of our biological son never asked the question about why Emma abandoned the child in front of said child, but that didn’t mean she never wanted to.

In view of the late hour the boy went to bed almost immediately following the second slice of that marvellous cake with the middle layer of raspberry and the top layer of buttercream with crumbled almonds. I had no idea what gods managed to invent that recipe, but that cake was a little masterpiece. Somehow Emma is capable of networking, if she is willing to. That was her ex’s Cake Shop and they broke up without any drama, still seemed to be friends and congratulated each other with all holidays they could remember, except St Valentines.

Something subtly changed in Regina Mills as soon as Henry disappeared on the second floor. He was sure that everything would be quite calm between his adoptive and biological mothers. Personally, I thought that any mother who dared to abandon the child has no right to interfere further. Just once I hinted to Emma about my real opinion, that was right after she had already repented of her deed. Unfortunately, I cannot remember either being in prison with Emma or giving birth, or how she decided to abandon the kid. Well, I can’t say I didn’t warn her before I finally managed to leave her… The moment was awful, as I understand it now. But… Well, I warned my darling idiot a hundred times about the fact that my radar goes off, no, not just goes off, it fucking yelled like cat whose balls got pulled by someone! And that cat-radar-thing was always on when her new acquaintance, and then the guy she slept with was nearby.

I already didn’t give a shit how exactly she was ruining her life, because those days I thought that the faster her body would die, the sooner I could leave to capture some real hero. Actually, I would not be very comfortable being in her body as a full owner, with all that complications and even without fully awakened magic. Better let her die, I thought, poor fellow, because there are people who are rubbish and many more are just sluggish. Well, magic can be awakened - such a surprise really! - in the magical places of power and with the help of a trusted person. And the last one was the greatest problem in that realm. There’s one more option. There are always more options than one, but it hardly helps sometimes. The bearer of magic should be engaged in deliberate suicide attempts with the participation of complex magical enemies, which is not entirely possible here either - the world is ordinary, it seems, not magical, like, at all! And I must admit, I expressed everything I thought about Swan’s stupid teen acts almost as soon as I returned to Emma after our short separation. Not even as a consequence of said separation, but during which she managed, first, to get into an FBI investigation, secondly, get pregnant.

Anyone might ignorantly ask, how that was even possible, if Emma dates women? And, well, it’s not even a question, because she’s not exactly into girls. To be honest, Emma was not heterosexual even in her snotty youth, nor was she a lesbian, no matter how my outlook influenced her emerging character. She was very rarely interested in the sexuality and even the appearance of her intended partner, if we are talking about stable canons grafted by society. It was the pansexuality in such a manifestation that was not very good for Emma herself. That was because Emma had lots of complexes, with which I didn’t seem necessary to fight for the most part, and that shit set the bar low enough for her partners and, accordingly, downgraded Emma herself. It is logical that for me it was oh how profitable, that lack of self-esteem, but sometimes I wanted to bring up a real hero from the canon of a fairy-tale genre, like most princes from classic fairy tales were. But, I'm afraid, the reality wasn’t quite disposed to ensure that I educated Emma for real. And I never raised anyone in any of my lives, I usually had to wait until some major heroism in adulthood, staying somewhere on the sidelines, just looking at the life of the hero and arising in time, but Emma was the case that was even more interesting, than when I ended up in Naruto.

There was just a simple demon there, in the only reality in which I captured the body of the child, and that demon who was planted inside the poor child had nearly crushed my very essence with all his might. By the way, it was then that I made it a rule not to touch children and their formation as heroes, because you never know what might occur. At the same time, my, in some way, rapprochement with the ward of mine was due to the fact that my heart wasn’t hardened enough, and I never saw anything special in it - to reassure the little girl, who was paying me back with crumbs of the magic, which she periodically threw out. And that gave me the opportunity to gain mobility and dump that relationship to hell. I was hoping to wait until the child would get tired of playing oh so independent lady and fulfills certain gestures conceived by fate, as I hoped would be better than just a mere non-magical world with lack of high-tech as well. Of course, it never reached extremes, but to have something intimate with that asshole… The one I would approve only in a hospital bed, and that setting would’ve happened by combining my fist with his jaw. I told her to punch his pervert balls right after the very first meeting with him. Oh yes, it was the highest degree of the very self-deprecation inherent in Emma in her early years.

Yes, and do something in defiance - we obviously can do it, we definitely know how, so we practice it, hell yes, Emma Swan. Although, as I’ve already said, everything that my ward creates before his or her heroism is, more often than not, what brings him or her to this heroism. Information, so to speak, is time-tested and the number of repetitions is remarkable. So, the face of Regina Mills subtly changed as soon as Henry went out of sight and hearing. She rose from the table and motioned for Emma to follow her.

“Cider,” the woman lightly poured alcohol into glass cups, but I whispered to Emma that we need to defuse the situation somehow. - “You are welcome.”

“Do you want me to stay overnight?” - Emma grinned, sipping a drink.

“What do you mean?” - Regina looked at my ward with quite perceptible hostility. - “I don’t think that you will spend the night in this house.”

“Whatever.” Emma almost blew out the entire glass, oh so kindly filled by the foster mother of her long-lost son, I barely felt the taste, because I was absorbed in analyzing the woman’s reaction to Emma’s words. - “I just drank alcohol, and if you are a hospitable hostess, you are unlikely to expel a person into the night, and expect that person to drive along some dark slippery road after the rain in state Maine…”

“There is a hotel in the town,” Regina shrugged, barely holding her palms - they seemed to tremble, I think, in order not to throw all her cider out of her glass into Emma’s face. - The hotel is pretty close. And the rain has never melted people in that region of the US. My hospitality has it’s limits, so…”

The last phrase sounded so threatening that Emma flinched. She even took a half step back, but there was something for her to find out from Regina. Therefore, my ward threw away the vague sensations whispering about the imminent danger to both of us, and changed the subject, making an offer that was hard to refuse.

“Madam Mayor, may we finally finally discuss what happened to Henry?”

“Let's go to the office, Miss Swan, we'll talk there. But it seemed to me that you have no right to care…”

The woman inquisitively looked at Emma, after suddenly turning around. She was about to put my ward in a very much awkward position. Swan’s eyes found something to watch out for when such a gorgeous woman was climbing the stairs, and it was not so easy for Emma to pretend that she was looking a little higher than Regina’s loins, and not lower.

“No, of course not,” - Emma rejected any accusations, - “I just do not want that to happen again, only next time might be much worse. You know, I can imagine what’s happening in the mind of an adopted child. Unfortunately.”

“Have you been abandoned?”

“She’s not familiar with the word “tactfully”” - I stated, and Emma sighed agreeing that way with me and having no coherent thoughts on the matter.

“And I was not so lucky with my parents as Henry.” - In one breath said Emma and conciliatory shrugged before entering the office at Regina invitation gesture.

“What do you mean, Miss Swan?” - Regina said with obvious curiosity. And that was said exactly for the maintenance of the conversation, because she probably wasn’t interested in anything of the life of the person she merely despised, no matter how she tried to cover it with indifference. I felt it in my guts. - Have you been abandoned for several times instead of one?

“You …” - Emma sighed abruptly and stumbled. “You are amazingly ingenious, mayor.”

“Usually, if they took the child, they can give it away, ” - Regina shrugged her shoulders and opened the door. - “We went through the procedure of full adoption. And you did not want contact. And you have no right to demand it.”

“I demand nothing” - Emma walked into the room and sat down on the sofa near the coffee table. - It’s Henry who demands. I think that one of his whims can be fulfilled by you and me both. It’s easy to be disappointed in me in a couple of days, and I will hardly be here any longer. It’s quite a sober assessment of my qualities, you know. He has the right to believe that I just never needed him, and because of this I put him into adoption. Roughly speaking, this is exactly what happened.”

“Hmmm …” - the mayor put down her glass of cider and slightly tilted her head to the side. - “It will be easier for me if you tell me the details. And I myself will assess whether Henry should know that details. Do you agree?”

“If ...” Emma jarred, and she remembered my characterization of this controlling Madame, and then continued to speak out loud, “You really need this so much, huh? Control over his life...”

“You may not understand this, Miss Swan,” - I traced an undoubtful grin in her tone - “But this is a necessary maternal care, until he grew up. You do not have the slightest right to get into our lives. And if I'm still going to give you …”

“Uh, no,” - Emma twisted her index finger in a negative gesture, interrupting Regina. - ”It doesn't work that way. I told you that the boy himself wants it. And if he's half as good as I was at his age, and at the same time he’s so sure of himself that he found me contrary to common sense, then he’ll do what he wishes. I think with Henry, Madam Mills, just like with me, you’d need a slightly another tactic.

Mayor Mills was barely holding back the facepalm. Or maybe not a facepalm but a facefist to Emma’s face, really. My beloved ward sometimes seemed to possess a very thick bone in the area of the frontal lobe. Of course, we didn’t have the right to intervene in the life of the kid, but in order to understand at least something of what actually happened in the boy’s life, it is quite necessary not to engage in prohibited stalkering, but to agree on any terms of the real mother of our child so that the child did Not decide that the whole world is against him and did Not run off somewhere else, not to Emma, but to a much less secure environment. The result was supposed to be, like, the Mayor Mills need to have that feeling that all she had to do was just to suffer this crazy woman a little, I mean, Emma and I as I am crazy of her woman or something, and then after that little bit of suffering everything will be fine. And, of course, Swan masterfully turned the situation around, and if it were not her son’s fault, I would even be proud a bit.

“Listen, swan. Do you think that if a boy is exposed to something like domestic violence… would he have a hard time?!”

“She doesn’t look like a person who’s able to beat a beloved child for his own good,” - digging deep into the nature of relationships of this kind, but at the same time being extremely sarcastic, said Emma and added. - “I always hear when you call me a bird. There is a certain difference in the translation of your thoughts into mine, I hear something like Swan the Bird, I told you already. And warned that I did not like it!”

“Yes, of course,” - I grinned, - “there are no other problems except for discussing nicknames. In which, I note, again, my cygnet, I’m gonna call you as I wish because you can’t run away from yourself...”

“Shut up. I pray thee, I am both fuckin’ funny and want to swear. She will not understand if I don’t keep my face neutral!”

“Well, then keep it.” - I advised, and yet I fell silent, as she asked.

Next five minutes were like… In the real world, a whole epic of verbal struggle unfolded for the right to be in this glorious town. Emma was sure of what she was going to do and claimed that she was Not going to get involved either in the relationship between her son and his other mother, or in the senseless and merciless altercations about whether he could be in her company at all. She simply stopped the bickering - Regina Mills started it actually at the time of our inside dialogue, disguised as reverie in the reality. The mayor felt some detachment in Emma's behavior and decided to seize the moment.

“You have no right to tell me how to behave with my son! You recklessly abandoned Henry in the past, and whatever your reasons, you have no right ...”

“Wait, I just take care for the boy!” - Emma allowed herself to interrupt this stream of polite translation of obviously obscene thoughts and continued, under the scornful gaze of Regina Mills. - “Yes, it turned out that I had to give him up for adoption. There are times when you need to decide how it will be better. And after seeing where he is now, I still think that it was better “- aha, girl, you caress her ego, keep it up, the corners of Mills' lips just started in a smug grin, but I noticed. - “I’m not trying to re-establish a maternal connection with him, Madame Mills.” Understand me, I did not come here myself - this child brought me to your town. And I would very much like, first, to understand why that happened and, second, honestly, it frightened me that he went so easily and naturally to look for me in Boston! Damn Boston Regina! Boston is in another state since 1820 for fuck’ sake!”

“I think that I’m quite able to convince my son not to do this in the future ... And I’m quite able to make you go back to where you are from and tell my, ” - she emphasized again, as if we hadn’t said anything here before on this account, - “son, so that he no longer seeks to meet you, because you don’t want it. After all, you really do not need it, Miss Swan. What is this all for?”

“I think you don’t quite understand that he shouldn’t feel betrayed again. Yes, you are unlikely to meet me again if you do this, but ... ahem ... the child will not be easier, I assure you. Instead of driving him to therapy, you could’ve…”

“How do you know about therapy ?!” - the mayor snapped to a harsh tone, and Swan soothingly raised her palms in a sign of surrender to the mercy of the enemy.

“Oh darling, calm down! We just met Archie on the square in front of the clock tower - an evening walk with the dog, and it became clear that Henry went to the sessions for him just after a minute of observing their communication!”

“All right,” - the fists of this woman were already unclenched, but we were a little wary because of that breakdown - you never know, would these failures also extend to Henry too? - “What did you want to say?”

“You can just solve the problem, and not analyze and pick it out. This is exactly what any psychotherapist does when the patient has no desire to get rid of the problem. And Henry obviously has no such desire. He is a fighter. Does not run.”

“He does not run?” - Mayor slightly mockingly looked at Emma, waiting for clarification. - “What are you talking about?”

“Henry found me, didn’t run away from certain doubts. He may think that he may not be needed. Even if he is hiding behind these fairy tales, he simply had to change something in this life, to make sure that he was needed. That is what I understood from his speeches on the way to this town, and you know …”

“Stories?” - Mills alerted, interrupting my ward. - “What stories?”

“The boy is kinda addicted to classic fairy tales.” - Emms kinda told the truth but I really saw it differently, and well I really thought to stop her because that controlling mommy might dispose of such info the way it might hurt the boy. - “It’s no big deal” - she continued. - “Say thanks to the Universe, he’s not following the comics and the anime. You see, believing in Snow White singing songs with birds and bunnies is much better than believing in punishing villains in the name of the Moon or Dr. Strange and all that I am Batman business…”

“Hmmmm” - .discouraged by Emma’s joking attempt, the mayor decided to pay attention to the obviously familiar name - and I really don’t know if there are people who don’t know that name. - “Snow White? How is she ... I mean, how is Snow White from a fairy tale related to Henry's behavior?”

Emma let pass that slip and I didn’t really pay attention to that either, but Regina’s fists were clenched again for a few seconds.

"A strange reaction. Hates fairy tales much? Realist to the bone? Would break you on the wheel for your love of Harry Potter books? Any of these explanations is complete nonsense, but something alerted me all the same. And so far I do not know what, but I am going to find out … Although, probably it’s just boy’s fantasy. She might be just an ordinary woman, even though the mayor. And Henry can just invent a fairy-tale world for himself. After all, this world really differs little from previous worlds like it in magical content, as far as I could find out. There are places - and nothing more. But it wouldn’t hurt to go to the local cemetery and check the background; it can even turn on the absorption of magic, if there is something special we can find, Emma.”

“Hey, slow down, old man! We're not going to stay here for long, are we? Or do you think something has changed? Make sure that she is not crazy or psychic, and go home.”

“Yes, Emma, yes. I'm just thinking.”

“Make your thoughts a bit quieter!”

She didn’t hold a displeased grimace under the mask of calm that she had previously held, and therefore the mayor slightly changed her tone to a more oppressive one — it was a natural reaction.

“You know, Miss Swan, for some reason I don't care much for this other tactics of yours already. Because this is my son. And I know what he wants. Always knew.”

“And I know what teenagers are thinking about, ” - Emma objected tiredly and rolled an empty glass in her palm. The hint was understood and Regina, with a theatrical sigh, poured them one more portion of her cider. - This particular teenager is still worthy not to think that he is not needed. It’s the least I can do for you.”

“For us? “ - Regina was as surprised as I was, but I would wait for Emma to explain, but this woman was less patient. - “What does that mean “for you”? For me and Henry? Or just for me? I don't need anything from you!”

“For you,” - Emma looked into her eyes, and I suddenly realized that I feel heat, spreading in my chest and getting to my throat, and Emma cannot suppress a half smile when she realizes how her body reacted to this piercing and even evil look while she was saying such intimate words to the other mother of the child. - “Because you were the one who gave him a better life than I could ever give. I can't thank you in any other way. It seems to me that giving the boy what he wants is the least I can do to improve your relationship. He may not understand, but he began to look for me because you are probably a busy person, you probably forbid him something and definetely control him. And that's fine. And at this age, rebellion is also normal, it just forms character. And now it seems to him that I can be ... I don’t know, something better? He idealizes me, and that's okay too …”

“What are you, a shrink? - Mills wedged into the arising pause and grinned at her assumption. - “Not likely.”

An Open Letter:: A Shift in Perception

Hello, everyone. This is VT. No, not Astire, aka both VT and CZ at once. Just VT.

Before you worry, yes this is a serious post, but no, this isn’t about some end-to-The-Harvester news or anything. I just need to have a serious heart-to-heart with you all.

My reason for writing TH started to shift. And, it’s time I shift it back. [More under the cut. Long post, but please take a moment to read.]

I’ll cut straight to the point, and the reason why I’m writing this. As of late, I have had little drive to write The Harvester with my partner, @chillachompers, aka CZ. I assumed it was because we were both busy, myself especially, but that wasn’t the root of it. Truncated version; I’d stopped writing for the enjoyment of it, and started writing with readers in mind first and foremost. I wrote to please everyone and to make a good, presentable story for people to enjoy. And you may be thinking, yeah VT, that’s the whole point! It’s a long-running fanfiction that you’re posting, of course that should be your priorit-

The Harvester was never created with the intention to share it.

Sharing it was... my idea. I got excited that CZ and I had something really good going, and that someone else should be able to see it, and might find enjoyment in it. Back then, the story was simple arcs 1-4, and then a few little other things. Maybe a 5th arc. That was it. Now it’s, quite amazingly, turned into a multi-series thing. And, the problem is... somewhere along the line, I became so focused on the story being as solid and well-executed as it possibly could be, to the point of no longer really enjoying the writing like I originally did. It became a mild chore instead of a break from work. And. I hate that. I hate my hobbies turning into chores.

Now, here’s the thing. A lot of this is on me. Most of it, in fact. CZ, for one, has no fault in this. I’ve always been the one to push things the extra step too far in the pursuit of ‘perfection’. It’s cost me dozens of hours of sleep with editing, actually caused me to stress out about writing a chapter that should be a light comedy romp, and to just... have negative feelings towards TH. I started writing to please fans and keep people happy with as little mistakes as possible instead of to enjoy myself.

Some may have the mentality that if we’re sharing this on the internet... that opens it up for critique. Even harsh critique. To some, that’s just the nature of posting things online. And I get it, I can’t stop you from seeing TH as something crafted for you and your enjoyment. But, I do really need to get something off my chest before it ever even has a chance to become a problem, because my anxiety loves to say the worst of my fears will happen.

The bottom line, is... The Harvester isn’t a Fanfiction written for readers. It isn’t a novel series. It’s a long-running, Steven Universe-inspired Roleplay between two friends with an extensive story and lots of OC’s. But it’s deeper than that. More personal. The Harvester is, at its core, a very therapeutic hobby. It’s very. Very hard to admit that out loud, it really is, because posting TH already feels vulnerable enough as it is, much less without people knowing what it is. This story branched off from a joke. A joke between friends about Yellow Diamond being drunkenly fused with my old Gemsona, Hematite. Then it somehow turned into what it is today. From the very start, it was just... a way for CZ and I to bond, to grow closer, to, though we didn’t know it at the time of starting, fight some really serious inner demons. It may seem silly to some people, but it’s very real to us, and the effect it’s had on our lives is undeniable, even if the effects have been behind closed doors.

The Harvester was never meant for other eyes. We didn’t have a ‘proper editor,’ we didn’t care that much about punctuation and grammar being correct, and we didn’t analyze everything for possible plot holes or contrivances. I didn’t do those things. But somewhere down the line... I started caring more about those things than the story and characters themselves. I was so focused on certain scenes going a certain way that I would actually pull them along forcefully, limiting what characters could do or say in response to a situation. And that’s... not what it was supposed to be. TH was always a wing-it sort of story with general guidelines and then loose chapter concepts. That had to be chipped away as things got more complex, but... the focus was lost, for me. MY focus was lost. I started nitpicking so much on stripping bad bark from trees that I didn’t pay attention to the forest.

So that brings me to the point of this letter.

The Harvester is a roleplay story written for fun by two dear friends, whom decided to share their story with the internet. We, of course, don’t want to just cut everyone off from this. I know CZ doesn’t want it, and I certainly don’t want it, either. I know people like this story and would be sad to see it go.

But I can’t keep writing this with the mindset that I’m making a product for the scrutiny of online readers, for fans, 95% of which I don’t even know personally. And that’s what brings me to this:

The Harvester won’t always be perfect. Far from it. That’s just how it is. It’s written by two stressed-out, busy, nerdy young adult artists who like big gems and drama. It’ll have typos, it’ll have all sorts of grammatical errors, it’ll have off moments, it’ll have plot holes, contrivances, characters acting a bit out of character now and then, it’ll have moments that go too far, moments that don’t go far enough, just like any piece of created media. It shouldn’t have to have a ‘quality meter.’ I shouldn’t be measuring a hobby with a close friend of mine by some self-created standard. I shouldn’t be sacrificing nights of sleep over editing every error out of a chapter. I shouldn’t stress out over writing about my own characters with one of my best friends, whose characters I love dearly. I shouldn’t be striving to perfect something so integrally personal as a story like this. One day when I start making my own fictions, sure, I’ll have that high standard.

But for now? Well... There’s nothing for you, as a reader, to take from this other than this: We do like hearing from you. We enjoy hearing your theories and thoughts. We like seeing your fanart. The fact that our hobby could bring a smile to anyone is mind boggling to us, in a good way.

But just know, right now, that TH is flawed. It always will be, because nothing is perfect. We’re two stressed-out, sometimes absent-minded people just trying to write something that makes us happy. We’re going to sometimes write some cliche, predictable, badly paced stuff, but we’ll also write some really good, heart-wrenching stuff. It’s just the nature of things. All I’m saying is, please don’t see this as something made for viewers. It isn’t... It’s just. Something we choose to share. And, this isn’t to say that we’re trying to avoid criticism, people will be critical of something they like. Just keep in mind what TH is at its core. It’s inherently extremely personal and close to our hearts, and every character has a piece of us in them. We’re not trying to write it to impress anyone or be the next JK Rowlings or Rebecca Sugars. We’re just writing it to have fun, to cope with some serious issues in our day-to-day lives. CZ’s always kept sight of that.

It’s time I do the same.

Everyone take care, and we will see you soon enough with the start of arc 6. We’re unsure when, but we’re aiming for before the end of June. We aren’t going to rush ourselves, though. It will be worth the wait.

It may seem selfish, but I have to go back to writing this for me. For CZ. For us. And I hope you’ll understand that ‘selfishness’ comes from a place of passion and a desire to keep a flame burning for TH. We’re not going to take TH in some drastic direction... but I am going to try and stop caring so much whether the story is perfectly crafted.

It just has to be fun.

A Cure for What Ails Ya: A Review/Impression of Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Big Sick”

Before I begin, I figure it’d be a nice time to explain one thing about myself: I am that guy you see in every “loser rom-com”. I think I’m funny, sociable and maybe even sweet in some awkward, nerdy way. And, truthfully, I relate quite a bit with these main characters and their struggles to win the heart of a significant other, and maybe learn a little something about themselves along the way. I’ve never been lucky, or brave, or confident enough, to pursue romance, but I’ve watched a helluva lot of these amazing/boring/derivative/original stories. Because, truthfully, the rom-com is a simple formula: person meets person, and the two go on a journey of love and growth. There have been dozens of variations of the simple formula of two characters who, at their core, are in love with each other, and through this love, go on a journey. Sometimes the journey leads to a happily ever after, with kids, successful career, white-picket fence...pets. Sometimes, it ends with both characters separating and becoming better people, only to eventually reunite. Sometimes, they don’t even reunite and go on to live completely different lives. And sometimes, amidst all these formulas, these tropes and archetypes, you find a winning recipe. A unique take, a unique perspective on something that has been trod across for decades at this point. It is good to know that there is still world-record recipes to be discovered out there in the world, and The Big Sick is one of the best I’ve seen. You should see it, too, if you’ve been in love, or had friends, or, well, a beating heart. Anyway! 

The Big Sick tells the story of Kumail Nanjiani, a Pakistani-American who immigrated to the big U.S. when he was a teenager with his family. Right off the bat, you are introduced to Kumail and his life (Uber-Driver, Stand-Up, Slacking Son all with dreams of one day succeeding in the cut-throat world of stand-up comedy), his family and their habit of introducing him with arranged marriage candidates, his friends, also struggling stand-ups, and one-night stand turned girlfriend, Emily. All of this is done to introduce us to a roster of lovable, unique and relatable supporting characters that revolve around Kumail’s life of struggle and uncertainty. The movie takes its time to truly live in Kumail’s life and takes a focus on two avenues: his blossoming romance with Emily, and his family’s expectations of him to remain faithful to his culture, his heritage and his religion, all of which Kumail struggles with. The movie does an excellent job of displaying and explaining Pakistani customs, including history, pass-times, culture and even main exports (cotton and cement), while blending it with the life of the American single: a life of apartments, struggling to pay bills and build a life and friendship serving as both support and comfort. These two cultures, American-Single and Traditional-Pakistani do a wonderful job of breathing life into Kumail’s stand-up and observations, providing both story and evidence to something often relegated to background or a brief joke. Never in the movie does it come across as window dressing or sub-plot: these cultures are infused and displayed proudly, embraced and criticized and ruminated upon throughout, and even used to further develop a rapport with audience and character.

So, while this is definitely a movie about culture, it is also a movie about something that transcends culture: love. Kumail meets Emily, a young woman attending grad school in hopes of becoming a therapist. Immediately, the contrasts between the two are presented: male to female, slacker to career-mind, Pakistani to American, but prove to be little in the way of love. Despite protests and jokingly made decisions to never see other, the two fall in love. A beautiful, simple and often adorable love, the two are not without flaws, and these flaws are never shunned or dressed up, but presented straight. Kumail lies and is often silently agreeable to his parents demands to attend arranged marriage dinners, while Emily is often in denial about their relationship. Still, their love wins out for the most part, until the movie takes a turn for the dramatic: breakup, recovery, and then, the title of the movie, The Big Sick arrives. Emily is rendered comatose after an infection, and Kumail meets her parents, something that was a point of contention between the two. Emily’s parents, portrayed amazingly by Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as nervous, passionate and concerned and confrontational, are complex humans who, nonetheless, start to build a relationship with Kumail. Things spiral out from there. Characters grow. Plots thicken. Sickness pervades the story. Dreams rise and die. But to get further in would be a spoiler, and honestly, I’d be doing a disservice to the film to spoil it for you: instead, take solace in that the movie does not pull punches in drama or comedy, and instead, binds the two into a tale of love and all the complexities that come about from culture clash, awkward situations, and perceptions.

The movie, I feel, does an excellent job at portraying what all movies try to do, or at least, the ones that care about their audience: tell a story that is both human, and extraordinary. Characters reveal deep-seated complexities and beliefs that paint a full picture of each cast member. We learn of Kumail’s insecurities with connecting with his parent’s culture, of Emily’s struggles in high school and with her illness, of Terry and Beth, Emily’s parents, and the struggles they’ve faced in raising a daughter, marriage in the modern age, and with their own tumultuous romance. And it is through these different facets that the movie reveals a simple truth: history, culture and family all help create who we are, who we will be, and who we were, but truly, we are all united by these factors. Kumail and Terry, in particular, display a bromance for the ages, with both reaching catharsis through communication and comedy. Kumail and Beth, meanwhile, close the gap from open disdain and reluctance, to mutual assistance, to friend and beyond. And through their struggles in dealing with the stress, terror and pressure of the Big Sick, they come together and draw strength from each other. It is in these scenes of communication and earnest, open honesty that truly sets “The Big Sick” apart from rom-coms, which often times skirt the surface of human romance to focus on saccharine-sweet montages and pointless drama about he-said, she-said or “who has the meaner parents”.

Of course, like anybody, the movie also thrives in its depiction of the complexity of family. Beth and Terry are portrayed as loving parents and good people, who aside from an initial stand-offish appraoch to Kumail, are people I would love to have in my family. While flawed (Terry is a timid man and Beth is fierce and overly-judgmental), neither of them come across as insufferable, shallow or prejudiced. The hostility they show is portrayed as a human reaction to  a perceived harm done (In this case, Emily’s romantic relationship and the abrupt end of it), rather than an outright disdain for those different from them. It is in this strange, but sweet, situation that “The Big Sick” carves off a new, unique territory. Kumail’s own parents are also portrayed as strict and burdened with high-expectations, but nonetheless love and support their son. And while their is a scene with them that comes off as overly harsh and, in a way, heartless, it is resolved with humor and humanity and love, as the movie accomplishes in stride. The role of parent, and the relationship with children, is best summarized by a quote from Terry, spoken in Romano’s deep, nasally tone that lends both sincerity and humanity to the statement: 

“Loving someone this much, as a parent, is terrible...it sucks. Love isn’t easy...that’s why they call it love.”

And, honestly, that’s what “The Big Sick” is about: for all its humor, drama, commentary and struggle, it is a story about love. Love for family. Romantic love. Love for friends. Love for what one does. Self-love (Not that kind, silly) and even the anger and hate that comes from love. And not only is this a story about love. It’s a GREAT story about love. And honestly, in the political and social climate that, as I write this, pervades and suffuses itself into every aspect of American culture, it is nice to a see a movie about love that transcends borders, cultures, beliefs and hate. And does it with style, grace and humor. If you are looking for a deep, earnest and complex depiction of love and human interaction, then look no further: The Big Sick is the cure for what ails ya (See what I did there? I worked the title into the ending paragraph. Nice).

Hopefully, this won’t be the last movie Mr. Nanjiani pens with his wife, because if they can tell this extremely personal and intimate story, I look forward to whatever other stories they can create together.

The Wheel of Time

I’ve finally finished the Wheel of Time series, and it’s been a long one. I love epic fantasy with all my heart but 14 books can be a little bit overwhelming. But here I am, after thousands of pages later and I don’t regret time spent reading them. Honestly, this is one of the best fantasy series I’ve read in my life. And it’s finished, which is also nice. The thing I liked the most was it’s world. It’s amazingly written. The way readers learn about it is very natural. We start our journey with those bunch of farmers, for whom the whole world is their cottage. Yet they start this epic journey to learn that there’s so many more places to discover. The characters are as clueless about the world as the readers are, at the beginning at least. Later, as the number of POVs increases, our understanding of the countries and their inhabitants does so as well. The world smoothly unfolds before us. And there are so many amazing cultures carefully placed in the wast world of Wheel of Time. There’s a lot of considerably “normal” ones, which even though they would fit well into the standard fantasy setting, are still distinguishable from each other. They all have something special about them, which usually feels very natural, considering the geopolitical situation of each country. Those countries feel more real to me than some of the existing ones. And then, we have also the “weird” and not as standard cultures such as the Seanchan and Aiel for example. And even though they feel strange at the beginning, later we understand them as well as the others. Interactions between cultures are nicely done and all the nations create an unforgettable world which I will happily revisit many times in the future. As any fantasy series with self-respect, Wheel of Time has it’s own magic. And it’s magic is magnificent. The concept of One Power is rather simple, a person who can wield said Power, can shape it in “weaves” that, depending of their complexity and the type of the Power, can have numerous effects. Even though it sounds generic, when it’s described from the channeler POV it’s truly captivating. The One Power was the only thing that kept me reading this series, which has a one weak point, the first book. I found it rather boring and very LOTR-like. It has also one of the most random pieces of lore in the entire series. I definitely wouldn’t sign up for the 13 more books like this, if it wasn’t for the One Power and Aes Sedai (group of Power wielding women). What can I say, I have a soft spot for sorceresses. So I started the second book and fell in love with it. So I beg if anyone feels discouraged to continue after reading the first book, please give the second one a go. From that point plot is less LOTR-like with a lot of tropes being changed or used in a creative way. I mean, we need to congratulate an author, who managed to make the “battle of hero from the prophecy with the evil power” feel interesting and new. And that couldn’t be achieved if not for the characters. The plethora of characters. So many diverse characters. Honestly, there are hundreds of names and personalities to choose from, everyone will find someone they’ll like. While the main cast may be a little be annoying and have many trivial problems (that’s an issue I think up to the third or fourth book, at least for me), those problems make them more real and natural. Because people are annoying, they have problems with communication and they do have irrational fears. That can be irritating from readers point of view but it’s important, they need a space to grow. And they do grow. These book have really well-done character development arcs, which I found highly enjoyable. To talk more about the characters, I need to talk a little bit about the plot and events, so if you don’t want to know anything it’s a good place to stop reading your review and start reading the books. But I won’t talk about any major spoilers so don’t worry about it.

Okay, let’s start with my favorite, Egwene Al'Vere. Her arc is simply the best in my opinion, her growth from just a simple farmer girl to a powerful woman who is a force that has to be reckoned with is magnificent. The way she deals with all the obstacles that are placed before her is realistic and interesting. The only thing I didn’t like about her arc was her lover (not going to name him, cause it’s kind of spoilery) but I suppose that everyone needs somekind of flaw and love is blind after all. Many people are irritated by Rand Al'Thor, who is the closest person to protagonist of these series. He’s often called most annoying protagonist and stuff like that. I don’t understand where such hatred comes from. I mean, he’s a very flawed person, but his flaws makes sense. He struggles with the power and responsibility, that is so suddenly given to him. And that’s normal. He grew up to be a farmer, noone should expect him to be the perfect leader. That makes him a believable character. That makes him interesting. He tries as hard as he can, but he doesn’t always get the best results, he sometimes misunderstands the situation or gets lost between the things that need to be done and the ones that shouldn’t be done. I also enjoyed the aspect of a voice he hears in his head and how we’re not really sure, weather it’s real or not. But to such an intresting protagonist we need some good villans to balance the odds. And Wheel of Time doesn’t dissapoint in that aspect. Although the Dark One is not that fascinating, his subordinates, the Forsaken certainly are. They a group of 13 ancient mages, with their own motives, their own agendas and plans. They are rivals, fighting for the appreciation of their master. They plans deliver a lot of suprises and interesting obstacles, and their personalities are amazing as well (my favourites were Mesaana, Semmirhage, Asmodean, Ishmael and Lanfear). There are so many more awesome characters such as Elayne Trakand, Aviendha, Siuan Sanche, Moiraine Damodred, Galad Damodred, Lan Mandragoran or Tuon, to name just a few. There are just too many of them to write about each of them individually. Obviously the Wheel of Time isn’t perfect. I already mentioned the issue I had with the first book. It’s not the only thing that could be fixed. Another problem lies within pacing that extremely slowed down in the middle of the series. There were just hundreds of pages where nothing important would happen and some of the plotlines where needlessly prolonged ( Malden and Succession arcs I’m looking at you). The thing is I didn’t really mind that while I was reading. I would just get lost in the world and not care about the plot that much. But then, hours later, I would emerge back to reality only to realise that the story didn’t progress in any way during that time. The other problem I had was characters’ problem with communication and mutual lack of respect between everyone, but that mostly happened in the beggining. During the first five books there were so many problems that could be solved just by a frank conversation that it was painful to read sometimes. But, luckily the characters grown as the action progressed and they learned to respect each other and talk to each other, solving my main complaint about the books. Summing up, I would strongly recommend this series, it has its flaws, but there are so many pros that the problems don’t bother reader that much. And believe me, it’s an adventure worth expieriencing.

Anyway you can get out of an Si Fi loop? As an ISTJ, I often find myself lamenting past mistakes even though I know there's nothing I can do to fix it in the present. Any tips or advice?

Here’s some advice, but I’m not entirely sure this is a loop. There’s advice either way though.

An Si-Fi loop tends to display as using Fi to justify whatever actions you want to take (or not take) based on a moral code or ‘just being yourself’, but as a result getting stuck in a rut of past behavior, refusing to consider other options or take real action to fix things or enact change.

My Si-Fi loops have generally been best described as “calling inaction and indulgence self-care, but actually failing to fix anything.” One of the reasons I’m so against people being extremely asocial and expecting others to just accommodate that always is that one of the signs of an Si-Fi loop in me is to tell myself “oh, I need a night in, I need to binge-watch TV forever, I need to skip my workout because things have been hard and this will make me feel better.” Except then I have tons of responsibilities pile up or I feel obligated to hang out with people to make up for skipping out on them before or I’m unhealthy and tired, and then I get upset about that, and the cycle continues.

So: if you’re upset about past mistakes and that’s feeding into itself (Si obsessing about the past, Fi saying “oh, I don’t need to change, it already happened, nothing we can do”) and as a result you’re resisting any personal growth because of an attitude of “this is who I am and therefore any attempts to change me are an attack on that”, that would be a loop.

If, however, you feel bad about how things have gone in the past, and you think about it a lot, but you generally go about your life, then that’s probably not a loop. Most people have some regrets, no matter who or what type they are, and if they don’t either they’re amazingly self-actualized, have an amazingly bad memory, or have zero self-awareness. If you find that you really can’t get past them, then talking to someone (either a friend who’s familiar with the events, or a therapist, depending on severity/your situation) is probably a positive step you can take.

Either way, though, there is a good way to get out of the loop or to make you possibly feel better about the past, and that’s by using your auxiliary Te in a healthy way.

The Te-Fi relationship in TJs is often framed in a really simple and even kind of cartoonish way, of Te saying “I MUST SUCCEED AT ALL COSTS” and Fi going “but think of others!”. It’s much more nuanced than that. Te says “let’s go for external results and things that make sense in the context in which we’re using them, in a generally reasonable way,” and Fi says “sometimes goals are more complex than that, and sometimes people aren’t entirely rational, so we need to consider other, more nebulous factors.”

So: you need to use Te for self-development. Think about what mistakes you’ve made and how you can prevent them from happening again to the best of your ability, Analyze what happened. Come up with plans or new processes. If there’s any consequences of your actions that are at all within your control to address, address them. If not, again, plan on a way to prevent this mistake in the future. And keep progressing. Even if you think about the past a lot (and, while Si is more than that, it’s pretty unavoidable that you will consider new events in the context of the old ones as an Si dom), keep in mind the current evidence of what’s going on and how you can best act on it. Essentially, use Si and Te in a healthy way to learn from those mistakes, and then they served a purpose.
