The Millard Family | 2012
Lately, Amy has had a few days off work, so she uses the extra time to learn a few more recipes. She often spends time looking through her great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Millard’s old cookbook for inspiration, and learns a lot from it. Even though Amy never met Elizabeth, she can tell that she was talented in the kitchen, and she hopes that she, too, will one day be just as skilled as her ancestors were.
When she’s not learning new recipes, Amy likes to spend some quality time at home with Jennifer. She appreciates everything her partner does at home: from taking care of the housework while she’s busy working at the restaurant, to helping Ellie and Noah with their homework every evening, Jennifer does a lot, and Amy always wants her to know that she’s loved and appreciated by everyone in the family.
Amy and Jennifer still worry, however, about Ellie. Even though they try to connect with her, she doesn’t seem to want to spend any time with them at all. Instead, every day after school, she goes out to the forest or the fields with her little brother Noah and her relatives Jack and Charlie, and she doesn’t come home until dinnertime. Of course, Amy and Jennifer are glad that their daughter is staying healthy and getting plenty of exercise, but they can’t help but wonder why she's so distant from them.
One day, though, Amy begins to realise what the problem may be. She walks into her and Jennifer’s room, only to find Ellie looking at herself in the mirror with a sad expression on her face. At first, Amy wonders if her daughter simply doesn’t have much confidence in the way she looks - she knows that many young girls feel the same way these days - but when Ellie starts playing with her hair, Amy starts to wonder if the problem might be something else.
Eventually, Amy manages to convince her daughter to sit down with her and tell her what’s wrong. Ellie tells her mother the truth: that she doesn’t like her long hair anymore, and that she wants to get it cut so she looks more like Noah and the other boys at school. She also tells her mother that she doesn’t feel much like a girl, and that sometimes, she feels more like one of the boys. Amy understands immediately, and tells her daughter that if it would make her feel more comfortable, then she can get her hair cut whenever she wants.
The very next weekend, as promised, Amy and Jennifer take their daughter to get her hair cut. Ellie is very happy with the results: not only is her new short hair easier to take care of, but it doesn’t get in the way when she runs around outside with the boys, and she generally thinks it looks better on her than her long hair ever did.
Noah thinks his big sister looks good with her new haircut as well. He doesn’t know why she had it cut, and he doesn’t particularly care - he loves his sister more than anyone else in the world, no matter what she looks like - but he has noticed that she seems much happier these days.
From then on, Ellie starts to develop a much better relationship with her mothers than she has ever had before. Of course, she still spends her evenings running around outside, and she still comes home late on most days, but she’s much more willing to sit down and talk to her mothers than she was before. She feels as though her mothers will always be there to listen to her, and that they understand her, and that they will always allow her to be who she feels she is on the inside.
Most of all, however, Ellie seems to feel much more comfortable with herself these days. Before, when she looked at herself in the mirror, she could only see an unhappy young girl, and she didn’t like what she saw - she didn’t think it was really her. Now, though, she sees someone completely different: not a girl, and not necessarily a boy either, but simply Ellie Robinson-Liu, a happy and confident young person.

Introducing The Wissmanns!
Part 2. The 2nd Generation Couples.
[ Click Here If You Missed Part 1 ]
As promised, here is a quick rundown of the Wissmann Couples, starting with Wissmann #1 (Rachel)...
Rachel (Wissmann) + Alan William Busenitz
Alan proposed to Rachel on December 16, 2011, after knowing her for just 13–14 Weeks. (Doing the math, they must have met in September of 2011.) They married on June 30, 2012. On the Wedding Date, Alan was 39, and Rachel was 30. Initially (for ~3 Years) they struggled with “unexplained infertility,” and eventually tried fertility drugs and even IUI. Rachel implies that they ultimately conceived ‘naturally,’ however, and they’ve now had 3 Children—
Kendrick Alan Busenitz b. January 26, 2016 (Age 6)
Autumn Joy Busenitz b. October 7, 2017 (Age 4)
Justice William Busenitz b. July 12, 2019 (Almost 3)
Since Justice, Rachel has unfortunately had two back–to–back 2nd–Trimester Losses. She miscarried John Matthew at 19 Weeks Along on January 8, 2021, then Faith Elizabeth (at 17 or 18 Weeks Along) on August 4, 2021. Rachel also had an early miscarriage in September 2018, between Autumn and Justice.
So far, Rachel + Alan’s Procreative Pace (PP) is 628 Days with an ESOQ of 8 Children.
Rachel’s Husband, Alan Busenitz, is 1 of 6 Children. His family is from Potwin, Kansas, and Rachel + Alan now live in his hometown. Alan makes his living as a farmer. Rachel is a stay–at–home wife and homeschooling mother. Rachel + Alan are members of Emmaus Church (Whitewater, KS)—“an evangelical Bible church with Mennonite roots.” (Statement of Faith.) (Duggar Data figured this out by comparing the church shown on Rachel’s June 2022 IG Stories re: VBS to churches in the Potwin, KS area.)
Ruth (Wissmann) + Ryan James Bourlier
Ruth + Ryan met on December 20, 2015. He proposed a mere 13 Weeks Later, on March 25, 2016. They got married on July 30, 2016, He was 34; she was 32 (Almost 33). So far, they have 4 Children (All Sons)—
Lee James Bourlier b. June 21, 2017 (Just Turned 5)
Jerit Daniel Bourlier b. October 3, 2018 (Age 3)
Judah Loren Bourlier b. November 28, 2019 (Age 2)
Kaleb Terry Bourlier b. July 3, 2021 (Just Turned 1)
Currently, Ruth + Ryan’s Procreative Pace (PP) is 491 Days (16 Months)—the fastest of the 2nd Generation Wissmanns—and their ESOQ is 11 Children.
The Bourlier–Wissmanns live in Kimball, Kimball County, Nebraska. Ryan is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), with a degree from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Ruth is a mother and homemaker, and also sells Plexus. (Yes, that’s the same ‘Plexus’ that J–Rod sells.) Duggar Data isn’t sure where they attend church, except they probably don’t go to East Fairview Mennonite Church, as none of the church bulletins mention them.
Josiah + Abi Lyn (Rehm) Wissmann
Their Love Story was posted on the Wissmann Blog, but Duggar Data stupidly failed to screenshot it before the Wissmanns locked the blog down. However, they probably met via Millard Alliance Church (MAC); the Rehm and Wissmann Families were both members. At any rate, Josiah + Abi wed on September 20, 2008, at the very first 2nd Generation Wissmann Wedding. Josiah was 23; Abi was 21. They had the very 1st GrandWissmann (Joanna) in February 2010 and now have 4 Children Total (2 Daughters, 2 Sons)—
Joanna Praise Wissmann b. February 24, 2010 (Age 12)
Asher David Wissmann b. November 30, 2011 (Age 10)
Jenifer Lee Wissmann b. May 17, 2016 (Age 6)
Andron Michael Wissmann b. October 11, 2019 (Age 2)
Josiah + Abi’s current Procreative Pace (PP) is 1,172 Days (~3.2 Years), and their ESOQ is 6 Children.
As of 2022, Josiah + Abi live in Milford, Seward County, NE. It’s unclear what they do for work. They attend Hillcrest Evangelical Free Church (Seward, KS). (Statement of Beliefs.)
Bethany (Wissmann) + Daniel Trust Beasley
Bethany’s Husband, Daniel, also hails from a Millard Alliance (MAC) family. His father (Phil) is actually one of the church elders. Dan is 1 of 9 Children.
Bethany + Dan started courting on March 26, 2009. He proposed on June 29, 2009. They tied the knot on December 19, 2009. At the time, he was 21, and she was 23. So far, they have 5 Children, more than any other 2nd Generation Wissmann Couple—
Arianna Mae Beasley b. April 25, 2012 (Age 10)
Caden James Beasley b. February 3, 2014 (Age 8)
Everett William Beasley b. December 1, 2016 (Age 5)
Gemma Lynne Beasley b. September 18, 2018 (Age 3)
Felicity Anne Beasley b. January 28, 2021 (17 Months)
They also suffered a miscarriage prior to Arianna.
To date, Beth + Dan’s Procreative Pace (PP) is 800 Days (~2.2 Years) with an ESOQ of 11 Children.
Daniel is a lawyer. He graduated from law school in 2012. Since then, he has worked as an attorney at the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)—a non–profit, which advocates parents’ right to homeschool. (Fun Fact: The HSLDA is the organization that assisted The Romeike Family with their asylum case.) Bethany is a stay–at–home, homeschooling mother. Currently, they live in Charles Town, Jefferson County, West Virginia. They worship at Fellowship Bible Church (FBC) in Shenandoah Junction, WV. (Their Church’s Doctrine.)
Andrew + Kori Jane (Knuth) Wissmann
She is from Florida, is 1 of only 2 Children, and her family isn’t as conservative as the Wissmanns. (But, they’re definitely still conservative.) She and Andrew met in 2002; started dating in 2008; got engaged on the 4th of July, 2010; and married on March 5, 2011. Andrew was 23; Kori was 22. They didn’t become parents right away, and experienced at least one miscarriage. (Their Firstborn, Wyatt, is apparently a “rainbow baby.” See Also.) They now have 2 Sons—
Wyatt Andrew Wissmann b. June 25, 2018 (Just Turned 4)
Jaxon Richard Wissmann b. June 11, 2020 (Just Turned 2)
Their Procreative Pace (PP), which is based on their only non–Firstborn Child Spacing (Wyatt–to–Jaxon), is 717 Days. Their ESOQ is 5 Children.
Drew + Kori live in Winter Garden, Orange County, Florida. Duggar Data isn’t sure what they do for work. They might attend Beulah Baptist Church (Winter Garden, FL) (Statement of Beliefs), since Kori “likes” it on Facebook.
Matthias + Michelle Ruth (Kingery) Wissmann
Matthias + Michelle went public w/ their courtship on June 18, 2017. He went on to propose on August 29, 2017, and their Wedding Date was December 30, 2017. They are fairly private, recently waiting until birth to announce their 2nd Pregnancy / Child. As of 2022, they have 2 Children—
Adalynn Michelle Wissmann b. March 22, 2019 (Age 3)
Titus Ezekiel Wissmann b. June 7, 2021 (13 Months)
To date, their Procreative Pace (PP), based on their only non–Firstborn Child Spacing (Adalynn–to–Titus), is 808 Days. Their ESOQ is 7 Children.
Michelle hails from Minnesota, from a large “singing family.” (The Wissmanns are also a “singing family,” so that might be how she met Matthias.) She’s the 3rd of 8 Children. As of 2022, Matt + Michelle live in Seward, Seward County, Nebraska, close to his parents. He works for his father’s company, Wissmann Enterprises, while she is a stay–at–home wife and mother. They are members of East Fairview Mennonite Church, where Matthias sometimes preaches and leads bible study.
Hannah (Wissmann) + Jeremiah Robert Duggar
They hardly need this Introduction, but here goes... Hannah + Jeremiah were married on March 26, 2022. He proposed in Late December 2021—the exact timing is discussed in this Post—after going public with their relationship that October. No Children yet.
Obviously, Jeremiah hails from the very well–known Duggar Family. He is 1 of 19 Children, and half of Michelle’s 2nd and Final Set of Twins. He is 5 Minutes Younger than his fraternal twin brother, Jedidiah.
After their wedding, Hannah moved to Jer’s home state of Arkansas. Duggar Data doesn’t know exactly where in Arkansas they’re living. Duggar Data also isn’t sure where they go to church.
Nathanael Wissmann + Katrina Hope Sahlstrom
Finally... Wissman #11 (Nathanael) is in a relationship with Katrina Sahlstrom. He is 20 (DOB October 28, 2001). She’s 19 (DOB June 28, 2003). Apparently, they began dating on June 28, 2021. Nathanael went public with the relationship on Instagram the next day. They’re not engaged yet.
Katrina is the 7th of 10 Children. She still lives at home in Tracy, Lyon County, Minnesota. Nathanael is, likewise, still living at the Wissmann Family Home in Milford, Seward County, Nebraska. He works full–time for the family business, Wissmann Enterprises, and is also a licensed pilot. It’s unknown what Katrina does for work. She is a homeschool graduate.

THE TRUE ORIGIN OF COUNT DRACULA
Dracula. The most famous vampire in history, created by the pen of Bram Stoker. Did he got inspired simply from Vlad Tepes, prince of Valachia, or are there any other figures who inspired him? The vampire figure has always been in the collective imagination and these creatures were born much earlier, and in some ancient civilizations there are already traces. In 1800, for example, there was a belief in Greece that all people with red hair could feed on blood. The cradle of vampires is Romania and it has always been believed that Dracula was modeled on the figure of Count Vlad, called "The Impaler", a member of the order of the Dragon, an order created to protect Christianity in Eastern Europe, in a time when the Turks was the most powerful empire in the world. he was ruthless and brutal and his reputation spread across Europe. Initially the novel was not titled "Dracula" but the original manuscript was simply titled "the undead" and the protagonist was called Count Vampyr.
This may mean that at first the writer had not directly connected him to Count Vlad. In 1998 Elizabeth Millard, a literary scholar, published an essay in which she supported the thesis that in reality Stoker did not have great knowledge on the figure of the notorious Romanian count, he certainly knew its history, but not so well. In 2010, Bob Carran, professor of Celtic history and mythology, publishes an interesting article that answers the question of who was inspired by Stoker for his vampire. Being the writer an Irishman, he may have been inspired by the legend of Abhartach, a fifth-century Irish chief known for his habits of feeding on the blood of his enemies and subjects.
In the 17th century, Geoffrey Keating translated a legend rooted in Celtic mythology. In his work "History of Ireland" he talks about a real historical figure: Abertach. He was a warlord, governor of a small kingdom. He was much feared by the local population as he was believed to have magical powers. Fear led the population to seek help from a chief of a nearby kingdom, Katayn, and that if he were able to kill him, the rival's kingdom would end up in his hands.
He succeeded, killed him and buried him in an upright position as was the custom. But during the night Abertach emerged from his grave, recovered his strength by feeding on the blood of one of his subjects and began the hunt for his assassin. Katayn killed him a second time, but Abertach continued to rise from his grave. Katayn asked for help from a shaman who told him that his rival was an "undead" and that to defeat him he had to bury him upside down and stick a wooden stake in his heart. Following the advice, Abertach was finally defeated.
The Celtic word "dreach - fhuola" means "corrupt blood" and it is believed that it is from this word that Stoker called Dracula its protagonist. When Bram Stoker was researching one of his biggest influences was a woman born in a healthy family in the Lanarkshire town of Airdrie, her name was Emily Gerard and she wrote books about Transylvanian folklore titled “ The land beyond the forest”. Those books introduced to Stoker the concept of the “nosferatu”, a vampire creature. She wrote the books after spending 2 years in Romania with her husband, who was there as an officer in the Austro – Hungarian army.
I agree that for sure Stoker has been inspired by several different sources since Ireland mythology is vast and has many tales and legends. I have always been really interested in the figure of the vampire. it’s something ancient, almost “ primordial”, and in my opinion, it’s the most famous horror creature in literature. The classic and the modern one. I read Dracula for the first time when I was 11 years old and it has been a life changing book. It was not just an horror novel but much more. It marked the beginning of my passion / obsession for Gothic and Horror Literature and it’s something that accompanies me to these days. I never get tired to study the book and the new literary discoveries about it.

The morning of May 18th, eight high school students and two teachers lost their lives in Santa Fe, Texas, the sixth fatal school shooting of 2018. That same night, a woman was killed on the campus of Mount Zion High School in Jonesboro, Georgia. The students leave behind empty desks and diplomas. They all leave futures and families and friends, a painful collection of what-ifs. Each of their stories is unique, yet they each converge on a painful truth: They died at one of our schools. We said, “Never again.” But again is now. Today, we add the names of the most recent victims to our list of those we’ve lost in school shootings since Columbine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scion_(automobile)
Scion is a discontinued marque of Toyota that started in 2003. It was designed as an extension of its efforts to appeal towards younger customers. The Scion brand primarily featured sports compact vehicles (primarily badge engineered from Toyota's international models), a simplified "pure price" model, and eschewed trim levels in favor of offering a single trim for each vehicle with a range of factory and aftermarket options for buyers to choose from to personalize their vehicle. The Scion name, meaning the descendant of a family or heir, refers both to the brand's cars and their owners. The brand first soft launched in the United States at selected Toyota dealers in the state of California in June 2003, before expanding nationwide by February 2004. In 2010, Scion expanded into Canada. In an effort to target the generation Y demographic, Scion primarily relied on guerrilla and viral marketing techniques.
Scion was originally launched with promises of short product cycle and value based partly on low dealer margins, which became difficult to keep as sales fell after the economic downturn.[3] On February 3, 2016, Toyota announced that it would shut down the Scion brand in August 2016, with selected models to be re-branded as Toyota vehicles for the 2017 model year.

The Must-See Artists At Melbourne’s Affordable Art Fair
The Must-See Artists At Melbourne’s Affordable Art Fair
Art

Judith Nungarrayi Martin
Cooee Art is Australia’s oldest exhibiting Aboriginal fine art gallery, and among its artists participating in the Affordable Art Fair is Judith Nungarrayi Martin, a painter who comes from a family of well-known artists.
Featured in Judith’s paintings are her father’s Jukurrpa (Dreaming). These Dreamings have been passed down over thousands of years, and directly relate to the land including the animals and plants that inhabit it.
Originally from Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, Judith now lives in Nyrripi with her husband and three children.

Laura White
Oil painter Laura White’s work features quintessentially Australian motifs, but this Melbourne-based artist is originally from Argentina!
After almost 25 years spent working in a government organisation and briefly in interior design, Laura began experimenting with paint for the first time. She is now an artist specialising in still-life and nature-inspired oil paintings that are breathtakingly lifelike. Her work captures the subtle beauty in colour, light and texture found in the everyday.
Laura is represented by Art to Art Gallery alongside more than 50 other Australian artists and an extensive Indigenous collection.
Artwork by Eleanor Millard. Photo – courtesy of Salt Contemporary Art.
Eleanor Millard
Eleanor Millard is inspired by the natural world, specifically, the ethereal landscapes and scenes that make up Victoria’s Shipwreck Coast. Her creation of texture using crushed blacks and blue/green washes produces the subtle contrasts and tones her haunting works are renowned for.
Eleanor is also represented by Salt Contemporary Art.

Gus Leunig
We’ve been fans of Gus Leunig’s work for some time, featuring him in 2012 as well as way back in 2010! His nature-inspired works display seemingly simplistic, whimsical figures in complex worlds on canvas. These carefully detailed works create colourful journeys that intrigue the viewer.
Gus Leunig is represented by Salt Contemporary Art in Queenscliff, Victoria.
Artwork by Geoffrey Carran. Photo – courtesy of Martinich Carran.

Geoffrey Carran
Victorian Surf Coast-based artist Geoffrey Carran is recognised for his distinctly vibrant and energetic paintings of Australian birds and plant life.
Many of Geoffrey and his wife Rowena Martinich’s works are created in their Victorian coastal home that was featured by us last year! The couple’s work as individual artists in the separate fields of abstract expressionism (Rowena) and representational painting (Geoffrey) informs the combined art and homewares projects they also produce.
Artwork by Natalie Anderson. Photo – Van Rensburg Galleries.
Natalie Anderson
Self-taught Australian landscape painter Natalie Anderson is another Van Rensburg Galleries represented artist who is heavily influenced by the sea, particularly the landscape and ocean around Geelong. Her work endeavors to capture elements that are both ancient and timeless in our ever-changing world.
Artwork by Johnny DeFeo. Photo – Van Rensburg Galleries.

Johnny DeFeo
US painter Johnny DeFeo is a relative newcomer to the professional art world. His work is informed by interior design, luxury goods, and traditional forms of craft over fine arts practices, and attempts to capture the experiences he has in the natural world.
Johnny is represented by Hong Kong gallery Van Rensburg Galleries (VRG) – another international name joining Melbourne’s Affordable Art Fair.

Katie Wyatt
Adelaide artist Katie Wyatt is known for her heavily-textured paintings depicting landscapes, seascapes and plantlife, most of which are painted from memory. She works with thick swathes of paint, using brushes and palette knives to lend an almost sculptural quality to her work.
Katie has been painting professionally since 2007, and is represented by Australia’s largest original art marketplace, Bluethumb.
Artwork by Ayame Kikuchi. Photo – courtesy of Taiko & Associates.
Ayame Kikuchi
Japanese paper artist Ayame Kikuchi was a graphic designer before eventually launching her own art practice in 2008. Since then, her work has been commissioned by Vogue Japan and Harper’s Bazaar, among other major clients.
Ayame works in the realms of sculpture and painting to form three-dimensional works that comment on the human experience and evolution of nature.
She is represented by Taiko & Associates in Tokyo.

Alice Oehr
TDF friend Alice Oehr is one of five artists who has been selected for the Affordable Art Fair’s Young Talent exhibition, showcasing diverse and immense talent from the state.
Alice works on both personal and commercial projects, from textiles to six-foot-tall Egyptian inspired statues made for the Spring Racing Carnival! Her work never fails to make us smile with its punchy colours and integration of pattern, collage and drawing.

-1942: nace Ronnie James Dio, músico estadounidense (m. 2010).
-1850: Millard Fillmore es nombrado el 13º Presidente de los Estados Unidos.
– 1962: Telstar, el primer satélite de comunicaciones es lanzado al espacio.
-1856: nace Nikola Tesla, físico croata (m. 1943).
-1972: nace Sofía Vergara, actriz y modelo colombiana.
-1980: nace Jessica Simpson, cantante estadounidense.

These 8 Household Items Are Going Extinct (How Many Are in Your Home?)
deepblue4you/iStock
From that convenient Keurig machine in the kitchen to the luxurious waterfall shower head in the bathroom, we’ve done a pretty thorough job of outfitting our homes with the latest modern amenities. But as we embrace the new, the old, everyday items we once relied on are all but disappearing.
It’s all part of the changing game of taste—often accelerated by the rise of tech. We want things that are more efficient, more comfortable, more convenient.
But what, exactly, is on the outs? (And are you sad to see them go?)
1. Bar soap
Before there were beautifully scented body washes in pretty, colorful bottles, there was good ol’ bar soap. Our moms relied on brands such as Dove or Ivory to wash everything.
Now, almost in an act of rebellion, millennials seem to loathe the bar variety. In fact, a whopping 60% of consumers aged 18 to 24 believe bar soaps are covered in germs after use, according to consumer research firm Mintel. And it’s not just millennials: 48% of all U.S. consumers believe that, too.
This might explain why the firm also found that the percentage of households using bar soap dropped five points from 2010 to 2015, from 89% to 84%. The preferred alternative is liquid body wash, which accounts for nearly half of category sales.
2. Tablecloths
Photo by Houzz You can probably call to mind the exact color and pattern of the tablecloth your mom used for special occasions. These days, though, that sentimental piece of fabric has become something of a relic.
U.K. home goods store John Lewis placed the tablecloth on its “dying out” list, reporting a 10% fall in sales of all tablecloths—from white linen to more everyday varieties—compared with last year. And that trend has extended to the United States, consumer experts say.
The possible reason: Families are eating together less often, with nearly half of parents saying they share fewer meals with their family than when they were growing up.
“Convenience is key in this day and age, so tablecloths have naturally been going out of style as families would rather easily wipe down their messy table after dinner, rather than washing a nice tablecloth after every meal,” says Carson Yarbrough, savings expert at Offers.com.
Plus, he adds: “Many new tables seen in homes today are designed to be pieces of art on their own, designed to be exposed.”
3. Batteries
You used to need alkaline batteries for your digital camera, flashlight, or Discman (hey, remember those?). And how about the rechargeable versions? They’re probably collecting dust in a drawer. Nowadays, rechargeable smartphones do all of the above, and we slide batteries only into the TV remote and smoke detector. As a result, external batteries are slowly becoming obsolete—sales are down 1.72% over the past year, according to Chicago-based market research firm IRI.
4. Gas stoves
Sales of gas stoves are on the decline.
fotostorm/iStock
Whether they’re actually more dangerous than electric or homeowners just perceive them as such, gas stoves are on the decline, reports Vince Lefton of Bulldog Adjusters in Florida.
“About 15% of house fires start in the kitchen, and this number was far higher before most people started replacing their gas stoves with electric,” he says.
Another reason gas stoves aren’t as popular as they once were: induction cooktops. “These provide quick and even heat distribution, which reduces the time it takes to heat a pan or boil water,” says Elle H-Millard, industry relations manager with The National Kitchen & Bath Association.
5. Liquid or powdered laundry detergent
Lugging huge jugs of liquid detergent or a heavy box of powder from your home to the laundromat might be good for your biceps, but both products seem to be waning in popularity. Total U.S. detergent sales fell 6.4% from 2009 to 2013 and will slip an additional 5.9% through 2018, John Owen, an analyst at market researcher Mintel Group, told Bloomberg.
“Overall, laundry detergent is seeing a decline, but pods/packs are on the upswing,” says Susan Viamari, vice president of thought leadership for IRI.
The stats confirm it: While sales of liquid laundry detergent fell 1.37% last year and powder detergent fell 1.09%, laundry packets rose 2.46%, according to data from IRI. Perhaps that’s because they’re more compact to store, and convenience is king.
6. Entertainment centers
This one should come as no surprise: Homeowners are saying “bye-bye” to the bulky TV cabinets and entertainment centers which once held their equally bulky TV, DVD player or VCR, CDs, and other odds and ends.
With flat-screen TVs becoming ubiquitous in American households, we simply don’t have the need for a giant armoire to hold all of our stuff. If you grew attached to yours, they’re usually not wide enough to accommodate large flat-screen TVs, adds Krista Fabregas, a shopping analyst with FitSmallBusiness.
7. Home offices (and all the trappings that come with them)
Photo by Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage Yes, it’s true that more people are working from home or telecommuting. But the days of using traditional home office space are on the decline.
Workers, more mobile with lightweight laptops, are spreading out wherever they feel comfortable—on the couch, in a work nook in the kitchen, or in bed. That means there’s no longer the need for a designated study—or for the big desks and workstations that went in them.
“Boxy towers, keyboards, and all kinds of wires are no longer part of modern home computing,” Fabregas says. “And modular computing stations used to be hot, but they’re also definitely going away.”
8. Puddled curtains and bed skirts
Face it, these draperies scream “old-fashioned” and “Granny” loud and clear. And it’s not just their appearance—today’s homeowners find them impractical, too.
“Floor-dragging window treatments and bed skirts are dust magnets and out of favor in today’s busy home,” Fabregas points out.
Ditto for window valances and cumbersome bed canopies, she adds. “When it comes to windows and beds, sleek, easy-clean simplicity is on the rise.”
Maressa Brown contributed to this article.

The Millard Family | 2019
Noah is 13 years old now, and his teenage years have officially begun! He has grown into a friendly and well-behaved young man over the years, and his whole family are very proud of him.
Over the past year or two, Noah has developed a deep interest in history - he loves to learn all about what life was like for people in the past. He spends a lot of his free time reading all the history books he can get his hands on, as well as doing some research online.
When he’s not reading, Noah spends most of his free time with his family. He and his older sibling Ellie have remained the best of friends over the years; they may have their differences, but they still do almost everything together, and they still love and appreciate each other very much.
Ellie still struggles with their body image at times, but somehow, Noah always manages to cheer them up whenever they’re having a difficult day. Ellie feels very grateful, and very lucky, to have a brother like Noah; they know that he will always be there with a kind word and a friendly smile when they need him.
Noah also has a close relationship with both of his mothers. Often, while Ellie is out with their friends in the afternoon, Noah stays in and plays video games with Amy and Jennifer. Even though Amy and Noah almost always lose to Jennifer in the end, everyone always has a good time.
On the weekends, however, Noah often spends his days at his grandparents’ house. Michael and Diane are always happy to see him; they love spending time with him, and they can’t believe how much he has grown over the years. Often, they ask their grandson about his plans for the future; he’s doing well in school, and he’s interested in history, so they wonder if he’s going to go to university and study history when he’s older.
In truth, though, Noah doesn’t know what he’s going to do in the future yet; he has his interests, of course, but he isn’t sure if he wants to turn them into a career. For now, he just wants to live in the moment and enjoy his teenage years - he’s still young, after all, and he has plenty of time left before he has to start thinking about his adult life.

Demise of Boise nonprofit makes aging in place harder
BOISE, Idaho — Boise at Home was designed to help the Treasure Valley’s older residents stay in their homes and be independent for as long as possible. But when the organization folded last fall, its members were left to fend for themselves.
Its demise is a sign of trouble ahead for the region’s growing senior population.
The nonprofit seemed like such a good idea when it began in February 2016. Older adults with no family members nearby could join Boise at Home and call for help with daily tasks whenever they needed.
The membership fee was $425 a year for an individual or $530 for a household.
“Our mission is to help people remain living at their own home as long as they wish by providing volunteer services and a handyman service and social activities so they don’t become isolated,” said Diane Ronayne, who helped create the organization.
Cynthia Brownsmith is a licensed psychologist whose daughter lives in North Carolina, more than 2,000 miles away. She’s 70, single, and joined Boise at Home as an insurance policy. When she needed back surgery and her cell phone died, she knew who to call for help getting it fixed.
“I really didn’t have anybody, and I felt secure,” Brownsmith said. “That was the most important thing, was the feeling of being truly secure and supported.”
“THEY TRIED HARD, AND I NEED THEM’
But after a year and a half of serving the region, Boise at Home closed its doors on Halloween, leaving members like Brownsmith without an important safety net.
“I’m heartbroken. I’m still …” Brownsmith paused, holding back tears. “Sorry. I’m still heartbroken, because they tried so hard and because I need them.”
Idaho is growing fast, and no group is growing faster here than older adults. The state has added 116,000 people since the 2010 census. More than 60,000 of those are 65 or older, thanks to aging and in-migration.
Melissa Radloff has seen this change firsthand. She’s the project manager for Legacy Corps, which provides respite for people caring for loved ones with ailments like Alzheimer’s disease.
“The retirees are no longer retiring in Florida and Arizona,” Radloff said. “There’s now quite a few places they’re going to retire, and Boise, Idaho is one of those top six places in the country.”
Radloff is worried about this growing population. Legacy Corps has a long waiting list, and the group is actively recruiting scarce volunteers.
WHERE WE WANT TO LIVE AND DIE: HOME
Gerontologist Stephanie Bender-Kitz is also concerned, because she knows how important it is for older adults to be independent. Bender-Kitz runs an organization called Honoring Choices Idaho, an advanced-care planning initiative. She has worked with seniors in Idaho for decades.
“Why is aging in place relevant? First and foremost, it’s because that’s where most people say they want to live and die — is in their home,” Bender-Kitz said. “Providing support to help people to live and die where they say they’d like to, that’s the right thing to do.”
Dorothy Millard knows the difference between aging at home and in an assisted-living facility. She and her husband tried out such an institution for two months before they returned to their home of more than 30 years.
“Hey squirrels, come on, it’s lunch time,” Millard calls out one chilly December day. “Where’s my lunch bunch? I give them black oil sunflower seeds and apple cores.”
Millard is 77 and loves her big yard in Boise’s North End. This is where she tends vegetables and feeds her favorite neighborhood squirrels. Her husband Steve used to help out, but then his Parkinson’s disease and dementia deepened. So she called Boise at Home.
“They cleaned up here, the pathways and along the edges,” she says, as she gives a tour of her wintry yard. Volunteers “raked the leaves and took out weeds, clipped some of the weeds, lots of the stuff that needed to be done around the edges.”
FUNDRAISING EFFORT FAILED
But Millard now has to do these chores herself since the organization ran out of money. The membership fees covered only a fraction of the costs for a director and handyman, and competition is fierce in Idaho for donations and foundation funding.
That’s because the need is so great, as Boise at Home’s Diane Ronayne explains: “You take an old person and you take a homeless person and try to compare the two … it’s hard to justify for those foundations giving money to people who already were in their homes when there were so many people who weren’t in a home.”
Ronayne and the group’s aging members hope the service can be revived. Similar organizations are flourishing in 200 or more cities around the country. But it’s too soon to tell.
What is certain, though, is that a big gap was left when Boise at Home shut down. And the need for such services is only going to grow as the Treasure Valley grows grayer.

The Millard Family | 2018
Recently, Amy’s sister Kelly and her husband Adam have been coming to visit her and Jennifer more often. They are both glad to see that Amy and her family are still doing well, both in their careers and in their everyday life. Amy and Jennifer, too, are happy to see that Kelly and Adam are still living a good life together.
Kelly and Adam also bring their daughter Mia to visit her aunts and cousins. Mia is five years old now, and has grown into a cheerful and friendly little girl; just by looking at her, Amy and Jennifer can see that Kelly and Adam are good parents.
Mia loves visiting her aunt Amy’s house. Amy has grown attached to the little girl over the years, and is always happy to see her. Whenever she’s free, she takes Mia out to the local park, and pushes her on the swing. Mia loves going to the park with her aunt; she always has hours of fun with her.
Noah loves his cousin too. He always looks forward to seeing her; sometimes, the two play together in Noah’s room, but other times, they go outside and play in the fields together. Lately, though, Noah has been giving most of his old toys away to Mia - he turns 13 next year, so he won’t have much use for toys anymore, but he doesn’t want to throw them away, and he hopes that Mia will have lots of fun playing with them.
While Noah spends time with Mia, Ellie is slowly beginning to make new friends. They have recently joined their school’s LGBTQ+ club, and have met many friendly, accepting and like-minded people over the past few months. Amy and Jennifer wish they would spend a little more time with the rest of the family instead of spending all of their free time texting their new friends, but they don’t interfere, especially since they know from their own experiences how important it is for young people - especially young people like Ellie - to have people in their lives who support them and who they can relate to.
Of course, Ellie still struggles sometimes with their body image; their body is still changing very quickly, in ways that they don’t like. Even so, Ellie knows that with the support of their family, as well as their new-found friends at school, they will never have to go through the hard times by themselves.

The Millard Family | 2017
For the past few months, everything has been going well for the Robinson-Liu family. Amy and Jennifer are getting older these days, but their love for each other hasn’t changed one bit.
Amy still cooks almost all of the family’s meals, as well as working at the local restaurant. It may be very tiring, especially when she has to get up early to make breakfast in the morning, but the smiles on her wife and children’s faces when they eat her food are enough to make Amy smile too.
Jennifer, meanwhile, takes care of most of the other housework. She, unlike Amy, enjoys cleaning, so she’s more than happy to take care of everything at home while her wife is at work. She does wish, however, that Ellie would at least keep their room tidy or make their bed once in a while; if Noah can make his bed every morning, then surely Ellie can as well!
Besides Ellie’s reluctance to clean their room, the children are generally doing well. Noah has been working hard in school recently, much to his mothers’ delight; he has always been a fairly good student, but over the past few weeks, he has been doing even better than usual. He seems to have developed an interest in history recently; he loves reading all about the past, and he is curious about how people lived hundreds of years ago.
While Noah continues to be a well-behaved young boy, Ellie has become more troublesome recently. Though they once had a close relationship with their mothers, they have suddenly become withdrawn and anti-social, seemingly for no reason at all. Instead of spending time with their family, they spend hours every day playing video games on their parents’ computer.
Amy often tries to talk to Ellie about their change in behaviour, but their conversations usually turn into arguments. In the end, Amy usually leaves Ellie alone; she knows that Ellie can sometimes be moody and bad-tempered, but she does wish they would at least talk to her so she could help them.
What Amy doesn’t know, however, is that Ellie has started to struggle with their self-image again. When they were younger, a haircut was enough to make them feel better about themselves and their appearance; now, though, they are a teenager, and their body is starting to change. When they look in the mirror, they notice that they are starting to look less like themselves, less like Ellie, and more like a girl again.
One afternoon, while Amy is at work, Jennifer sees Ellie looking at themselves in the mirror with a sad expression, and comes into their room to talk to them. At first, Ellie tries to brush their mother off, but Jennifer speaks gently to them, and asks them to tell her what’s wrong. Ellie soon tells their mother the truth: that they don’t like how their body is changing, and that they don’t feel like themselves anymore.
At first, Jennifer isn’t sure what to say to make Ellie feel better; she can’t stop their body from changing, after all. In the end, though, Jennifer decides that the best thing she can do for her child is to hug them, and to tell them that no matter what they look like, they will always be themselves on the inside, and that the whole family will always love them for who they are.
Noah, too, comes to comfort his older sibling. He smiles at them, and tells them that they will always just be Ellie to him, whatever their body looks like. Ellie appreciates their little brother’s words; even if he isn’t quite old enough to understand Ellie’s problems, he’s still trying his best to support them.
In the end, there isn’t much that Ellie’s family can do to help them. As much as they want to support Ellie, they can only try their best to make them feel better; they can’t stop their body from changing. Even so, Ellie is grateful to have such a loving and accepting family by their side; they know now that no matter what happens to their body over the next few years, their family will never see them as a girl - they’ll only ever see them as Ellie.

The Millard Family | 2016
Ellie is 13 now - officially a teenager! Their family is very proud of the young person they have grown into over the past few years, and everyone can see how much happier and more confident they are now.
These days, Ellie has a good relationship with both of their mothers. They love to play video games with Jennifer, even though they almost always lose to her. Ellie has no idea where their mother’s amazing gaming skills come from, but they’re determined to beat her one day!
Ellie also likes to watch their mother Amy in the kitchen; they’re not particularly interested in cooking, but they like spending some extra time with their mother. While she is cooking, Amy likes to tell Ellie stories about the past and about her childhood; she knows how interested they have been in their family history since visiting the Millard farm last year.
When Amy isn’t busy in the kitchen or working at the local restaurant, she usually spends time with her younger sister Kelly. Kelly is a frequent visitor to the Robinson-Liu household these days, and she usually brings her three-year-old daughter Mia with her as well. A lot has been going on in Kelly and her husband Adam’s lives recently; Adam is now a senior reporter for the local newspaper, while Kelly’s second book has been published! Amy is very proud of her sister; she and her husband have managed to make a successful living for themselves, as well as a loving family.
Ellie always looks forward to seeing their aunt and cousin. They don’t particularly like children (other than their little brother, of course), and they’ve already decided that they don’t want to have any children in the future, but they can’t help but get attached to little Mia.
But Ellie’s favourite thing to do in their free time is still running around and exploring the forest with their little brother Noah. Noah finds it hard to keep up with his older sibling - they are very athletic these days, and they never seem to run out of energy - but he still has fun exploring with them.
One day, while exploring, Ellie and Noah somehow come across an old cottage in the middle of nowhere. It’s clear to them that nobody lives in the cottage anymore - they can see old furniture inside, but no signs of life - so they decide to go inside and look around.
Once inside the old cottage, Ellie and Noah can tell that nobody has lived in it for a very long time. The house itself is very cold, the furniture is outdated and covered in a thick layer of dust, and the fireplace clearly hasn’t been lit for many, many years. Still, Ellie and Noah can tell that underneath the dirt and dust, this was once a warm and comfortable home, probably for a family of three, or maybe four.
If the inside of the old cottage sparked Ellie and Noah’s interest, then the outside is even more interesting to them. The two young people are intrigued by the overgrown patch of dead brambles and dry soil behind the house. They wonder if this patch was once a garden of some sort; if so, they think, then somebody must have taken very good care of it once upon a time, only for it to end up in such a sorry state today.
That evening, after returning home from their adventure, Ellie and Noah can’t stop talking about what they saw in the old cottage. To Ellie, the whole thing is just exciting; it’s not just an adventure, but a piece of history as well! Noah, however, is a lot quieter; he can’t help but wonder about the people who lived in that house in the past, and about what happened to those people, and about where their family is nowadays.
And of course, Ellie and Noah can’t help but tell their mothers about their whole adventure. Amy and Jennifer are a little concerned, of course - they really shouldn’t be wandering off and going inside old, abandoned houses in the middle of nowhere - but they are glad that their children are so eager to learn about the world around them.

The Millard Family | 2015
Since Amy and Jennifer’s wedding last year, everything in the Robinson-Liu household has been going very well. The two women have loved each other deeply for many years, but now that they are legally married, their relationship is closer and stronger than ever before, and they hope to spend many more happy years together.
Amy and Jennifer’s two children, meanwhile, are growing up very quickly. Ellie is almost a teenager already, and they are looking forward to celebrating their 13th birthday next year. For now, though, their mothers insist that they spend a little extra time studying, as they are not doing very well at school. Ellie does as they are told, but they have no interest in school or studying; honestly, they would much rather be outside.
Noah, meanwhile, spends most of his time roaming around in the forest near his house. Over the years, he has grown into a curious young boy; he loves to explore the world around him and look for new and interesting rocks and flowers and bugs to add to his collection. He’s a little younger than Ellie, so his mothers are a little less strict with him when it comes to his studies - though that may be because, unlike his older sibling, Noah does fairly well in school and usually hands in his homework on time.
Seeing how much Noah likes to explore, and seeing how hard Ellie is working on their studies these days, Amy decides one day to take the two children on a trip to the Millard farm to teach them a little about their family history.
Amy’s father Michael decides to join them on their trip as well. He takes the opportunity to catch up with his cousin Alan; the two men were so close when they were younger, and they are very happy to see each other again, even if they have aged a lot since they last saw each other.
Alan’s son Matthew, meanwhile, shows Amy and the children around the farm. Amy is pleased to see that the farm is almost exactly the same as it was when she was younger; it’s still successful, and it’s still in very good hands. Noah, meanwhile, is fascinated by farm life, and by the life his ancestors must have lived; it seems so different from the life he and his family have today!
Ellie, however, quickly gets bored, and wanders off on their own; they’re not interested in the farm at all, no matter how excited their mother and brother seem to be about it. While wandering around the farm, however, they soon come across something they never expected to find: a grave, one that has clearly been there for many years, with the inscription ‘Here lies George Arthur Millard, 1894-1967’.
Ellie quickly becomes curious about the grave, and about the person buried there. She asks her grandfather Michael who he was, and for the rest of the afternoon, he and Alan tell Amy and the children all about the long history of the Millard farm, about what life was like for them when they were younger, and of course, about George Millard himself, their grandfather, and the man who dedicated his life to making the farm the great success it is today.
